India is one of the fastest growing economies in the world. The role of the Iron & Steel industry is very important for the development of the country. Iron and steel are among the most important components required for the infrastructure development of the country. This is one of the fastest growing sectors. The demand drivers for the Indian Iron & Steel industry are increase in the activities of the manufacturing industry and infrastructure development. Indian Iron & Steel industry with its strong forward and backward linkages contributes significantly to overall growth and development of the economy. The industry today directly contributes 2% of India?s Gross Domestic Product and its weightage in the official Index of Industrial Production (IIP) is 6.2%. Manganese is a main ingredient for production of steel. Almost 90% manganese is being utilized by the steel industry worldwide. Globally, there is no substitute for manganese as on date. There is huge gap between demand and production of manganese ore in the country. To meet this demand gap and to support for growth of national economy, MOIL Limited (formerly Manganese Ore India Limited), a Government Enterprises, producing annually around 1.1 million tonnes (mt) of manganese ore and value added products, has geared up with various infrastructural activities to increase the present production capacity of 1.1?1.5 mt in 2016?2017 and 2.2 mt in 2020?2021. The paper deals with the technological improvements and infrastructural development activities of MOIL; this will help MOIL to become the market leader in manganese ore production globally in the coming years.

Le Centre de Recherches minérales (CRM), qui est un organisme de recherche appliquée du ministère de l'Energie et des Ressources du Québec, a été créé en 1969, dans le but de procurer un support scientifique et technique à l'industrie dans le domaine des mines et de la métallurgie. Pour atteindre ses objectifs, le CRM met à la disposition de l'industrie un personnel spécialisé et compétent dont une quarantaine d'ingénieurs et de scientifiques. Etant donné la nature même de l'industrie minérale, ce personnel est très versé dans l'étude des problèmes diversifiés des domaines de la technologie minière, du traitement des minerais, de la métallurgie extractive et de l'analyse minérale. Ce Centre de recherches met également à la disposition de l'industrie une usine-pilote permettant de reproduire les résultats du laboratoire au moyen d'un appareillage de type industriel, d'obtenir des échantillons en quantité suffisante pour une exploration du marché et de familiariser du personnel avec les opérations normales de l'industrie. Certaines de ses contributions récentes au développement de l'industrie minérale du Québec seront présentées.

"The naturally occurring carbonaceous material (CM) in gold bearing ores often exhibits strong-preg-robbing properties. It can adversely affect the process of gold recovery during the cyanidation due to its ability to adsorb, or preg-rob gold from the cyanide leach solution.Treatments of carbonaceous ores with chemical surfactants as blinding agents to limit preg-robbing have shown promising results but at the same time have demonstrated that, if not properly used, could have a strong detrimental effect on the gold recovery process. High dosages of surfactants used as passivating agents for carbonaceous matter could lead to unwanted partial passivation of the activated carbon added during the CIL process and severely impact the gold recovery. Optimal dosage for various surfactants would strongly depend on the ore mineralogy and the parameters of the pulp (temperature, pH, surface area and maturity of the carbonaceous material, etc).This paper describes an experimental study on the effectiveness of various commercially available blinding agents used to minimize the preg-robbing capacity of naturally occurring carbonaceous matter. The scope of the study was to: i) establish the optimum addition of blanking agent (surfactant) to minimize the preg-robbing capacity of the CM in the ore, and ii) establish maximum threshold amounts of blanking agents to be used before it negatively impacts the preg-robbing capacity of the activated carbon used in the CIL process. The study procedure involves standardized doping tests to evaluate the maximum preg-robbing capacity of treated CM, coupled with surface analysis with ToF-SIMS to monitor the presence and the degree of loading of these chemical surfactants on both the naturally occurring CM and the added activated carbon.INTRODUCTIONNaturally occurring carbonaceous material (CM) in gold bearing ores often exhibits strong-preg-robbing properties. The degree of preg-robbing related to the CM within an ore is defined by several parameters: total organic carbon (TOC) content, surface area, maturity (i.e., crystallinity) of the CM and the presence of various functional groups on the surface of the CM. Preg-robbing gold ores continue to be a significant challenge because of the lack of a single or universal solutions."

"Several mineralogical investigations have revealed the composition of modified kimberlites and the mud generated during treatment of diamonds, which contains up to 50% clay minerals (e.g., talc, talcsaponite, chlorite-saponite, Na-saponite) and X-ray amorphous phase. We investigated the composition of the natural diamond surface in relation to the diagnosed minerals and established the sequence and conditions for mineral formation on the crystal surface under kimberlite processing conditions. This article suggests a method to destroy and further dissolve minerals on the crystal surfaces using water system electrolysis products, which makes it possible to restore the diamond hydrophobic properties. The application of chemically treated water in the foam separation cycle under the conditions of high recovery of diamonds made it possible to increase the content of the factory concentrate by 8.0%.INTRODUCTIONThe high content of the modified minerals in the kimberlite ore results in the formation of hydrophilic slicks on the surface of the crystals which decreases the diamond’s hydrophobic properties and increases the losses thereof in the process of grease and foam separation to 20-30% (Kurenkov, 1957; Chanturiya et al., 1998, 1999, 2005; Duikarev et al., 2000).The previous researches have revealed the fact that the prospective way of solving the problem of intensity of mineral impurities formation on the surface of the crystals and the increase of concentration parameters is reached due to application of physical and chemical stimulation techniques on the solid and liquid pulp (Stricland-Constable, 1971; “Improvement of the technology…”, 2006; Makarskii, Adodin & Tarasova, 2011; Chanturiya, Dvoychenkova & Trofimova, 2012). However, the main task of investigations to stipulate the objective achievement is the studying and justification of the reasons of the diamond surfaces covering by the mineral slicks"

This paper will review the metallurgical aspects of the completed expansion program at Quirke, and the current rehabilitation and refurbishing program at Panel. During the Quirke program, completed at the end of 1977, the plant capacity was increased from a nominal 4,500 to 7,000 short tons per milling day. The expansion of crushing, grinding, neutral thickening and filtering, leaching, partial neutralization, sand-slime separation, sand washing, C.C.D., clarification, ion exchange, mine water treatment, and tailings neutralization and pumping will be considered. The application of Enviro-Clear thickeners in the mine water treatment circuit and in the C.C.D. will be briefly reviewed. An automatic grinding and classification circuit for limestone will also be covered. The refurbishing program underway at Panel will be discussed. The Quirke and Panel plants will be contrasted and compared. In particular, reference will be made to environmental considerations. The innovative system for producing yellow cake at Panel, LAMIX, will be considered as well as the proposed treatment system for Panel tailings.

The San Anconio mine, owned by San Antonio Gold Mines, Limited, is located on the north shore of Rice lake, thirty miles east of lake Winnipeg, and about one hundred miles northeast of the city of Winnipeg. The three claims which formed the original San Antonio group were staked in 1911. Subsequent additions to the Company's property have in-creased their holdings co thirteen claims. Preliminary development of the property took place between 1925 and 1930. The major ore discovery during this period was the 16 vein. The mine was closed in September, 1930, but re-opened in April, 1932, since which rime it has been in continuous operation. In 1933, a development of special importance was that of the 26 vein. The mill capacity, originally designed for 150 tons, was increased to-wards the end of 1933 to 170 tons. With highly satisfactory mine development, mill enlargement to approximately 300 tons was made possible. The Company has financed the additions and improvements from mine production. Iris of interest to note that San Antonio is the first gold mine in Manitoba to pay a dividend. The first dividend was paid to the shareholders in March, 1934, and the fourth was recently declared. Electric power is transmitted to the property from the Great Falls plant of the Manitoba Power Company over a 66,000-volt transmission line approximately 62 miles long. The old camps, which had been in use since work on the property was started, in 1927, were demolished in the spring of 1934, and new camps were built on the Ross dam. Lumber for these buildings was out at the Company's saw-mill on Gold creek, eight miles from the mine. Two bunk-houses with a capacity of 72 men each were constructed, also a dining room co accommodate 144 men, a store, staff house, hospital, burcher shop, and warehouse. The camp buildings are all steam-heated from an electric boiler. They are all insulated on walls, roofs, and floors with a heavy building board, and are covered on the outside walls with asbestos siding, and on the roofs with corrugated iron. A community of about 800 persons has grown up around the mine, at Bissert. Attention has been given co their social interests, and the management of the mine has assisted its employees co build a community hall, which is used for dances, picture shows, and other entertainments and amusements. A two-room school, with an attendance of 50 pupils, is supported by Company employees. In addition, picnics, boxing contests, and hockey games are encouraged among the employees.

"Microseismic monitoring provides insight into the location and extent of rock-mass fracturing induced by cave mining, enabling interpretation of the cave profile and validation of predictive numerical models. Source location uncertainties can lead to misinterpretation of the inferred characteristics of the fracture network. One principal source of uncertainty is the velocity model used to invert the location algorithm. Large-scale 3D numerical models of modulus changes across a caved mass can represent such complexities in the location algorithms, allowing more accurate interpretation of the microseismic activity. A Northparkes mine case study applies this advanced approach to microseismic data interpretation.RÉSUMÉ Le suivi microsismique fournit des renseignements sur la localisation et l’étendue des fractures de la masse rocheuse induites par l’exploitation par blocs foudroyés; cela permet d’interpréter le profil de la chambre foudroyée et de valider les modèles prédictifs numériques. Les incertitudes quant à la localisation de la source peuvent conduire à des mésinterprétations des caractéristiques inférés du réseau de fractures. Une des principales sources d’incertitudes est le modèle de vitesse utilisé pour inverser l’algorithme de localisation. Des modèles numériques tridimensionnels à grande échelle des changements du module d’élasticité à travers une masse foudroyée peuvent représenter de telles complexités dans les algorithmes de localisation, permettant ainsi une interprétation plus juste de l’activité microsismique. "LET ME FIRST OF ALL thank you for sending this invitation to me to participate in this Annual Meeting of The Mining Society of Nova Scotia. As an engineer, although I don't get an opportunity to practice very much engineering these days, I am, of course, always pleased to be able to meet with my fellow engineers to exchange views, but I must admit that today I feel a little bit out of place in the midst of all the experts that are here today. Let me make one thing clear - I'm a generalist! Your program states that I am to make a keynote address. I have always thought that a keynote speech is one that says something that has not been said before - announces some new program or policy, or says something startling. I am sure you will understand when I tell you that keynote addresses are made by politicians and that civil servants speaking publicly are usually expected to give an account of what is, or what is likely, to happen as a result of policies that have been announced in keynote speeches by politicians. I am reminded of a statement by a distinguished parliamentarian who said, ""However exalted a civil servant may be, he is not above the elected officials."" So today I will confine myself to giving you an overview with particular emphasis on the development side of oil and gas. The theme of ""Oil and Gas"" is a topical one these days. I suppose it's because of all the copy that is being generated by the media on the U.S. energy crisis, the Mid-East situation, the fact that most of the world's proven oil reserves are in Arab hands and, of course, the accelerated exploration activity that is taking place in the North Sea, in the Arctic, and off the coast of Newfoundland and Nova Scotia."

"Understanding the frictional properties of discontinuities is crucial to ensure the stability of underground structures. In particular, the frictional behavior at depth depends on the complex interaction among mechanical, hydrological, thermal and chemical characteristics and their coupled effects. In this study, a series of triaxial compression tests were carried out to investigate the behavior of rough shear surface of synthetic rocks. The frictional behavior showed little variation at different confining and water pressures. The test results were analyzed using Coulomb’s failure criterion. In addition, numerical analysis was carried out using PFC2D to simulate the test.INTRODUCTIONUnderstanding coupled behavior of rock at depth is of great importance in design, construction and operation of underground structures such as a disposal facility of radioactive waste, hot dry rock geothermal system and oil reservoir. In particular, many uncertainties are involved in characterizing deep rock mass deformation in the designing process and interactions among fluid flow of groundwater, high temperature and stress disturbance should be considered. Many independent studies have been carried out to investigate the thermal, hydro, mechanical and chemical coupled effects in numerical and experimental methods. They include the researches by Lockner, Summers, Moore and Byerlee (1982), Jafari, Amini Hosseini, Pellet, Boulon and Buzzi (2003), Tembe, Lockner and Wong (2010), Lee, Lee and Jeon (2012), Indraratna, Premadasa, Brown, Gens and Heitor (2014)."

Molecular recognition technology (MRT) has a wide range of applications in the hydrometallurgical and chemical processing industries for the selective removal of iron as well as various other impurities from a variety of streams, including aqueous solutions through a wide pH range, as well as organic solutions. An example of a commercial application is provided for the removal of iron from an aluminum chlorohydrate stream. In this example, MRT has a selectivity for iron relative to aluminum which is significantly higher than that of ion exchange resins. A discussion of MRT capabilities for other impurities and streams is also provided.

Once cemented paste backfill (CPB) is transferred and placed into a mine stope, various coupled mechanisms will take place in the CPB material or structure. It will be subjected to strong coupled thermal (T), hydraulic (H), mechanical (M), and chemical (C) processes. Field studies have shown that the in-situ properties and performance of CPB differ from those obtained in the laboratory. This is mainly due to effects of the aforementioned coupled THMC mechanisms or processes. For a reliable and cost-effective design of a CPB structure and barricade, it is crucial to have a proper understanding of the THMC behaviour and evolution of CPB. Also, it is important to consider the effect of coupled THMC factors (e.g., self-weight pressure, drained/undrained and thermal conditions, pore pressure) while curing the CPB specimens. For this purpose, a laboratory setup is developed to investigate the properties of CPB materials. The setup is capable of curing CPB specimens (10 cm in diameter and 20 cm in height) under controlled vertical pressure (curing under stress) and various coupled THMC conditions, while continuously monitoring the evolution of total stress, pore pressure, suction, temperature, water drainage, chemical composition of the pore water and vertical deformation. Once the required curing time is achieved, the specimen can be extracted and then subjected to experimental tests of interest, such as those that determine the Unconfined Compressive Strength (UCS), shear strength parameters, saturated hydraulic conductivity and thermal properties. In this paper, we describe the developed experimental setup and present some results of the THMC behaviour of CPB under various curing stresses and rates of backfilling. The obtained results show that the THMC properties of CPB are strongly coupled due to several mechanisms, such as self-weight pressure, heat of hydration and suction development as a result of self-desiccation. The findings can assist researchers and practitioners to better understand THMC behaviour and thus design more cost-effective CPB structures.

HISTORY AND LOCATION SEAL HARBOR GOLD MINES, LIMITED, was incorporated in January, 1934, to take over 116 acres of mining lands in the Stormont gold district, Guysboro county, Nova Scotia. The nearby ten-stamp Mulgrave mill was also purchased, and since that time 974 acres of adjoining properties have been secured from the Government by direct lease. The property is served by a motor road and is about two miles from the village of Goldboro, situated on the shore of Isaac's harbour. The bulk of ?the supplies are brought in by coastal steamer from Halifax, a distance of about 100 miles, since the nearest railway connections are at Antigonish, some 40 miles distant. EARLYY WORK The Seal Harbor properties include the old Partington and Beaver Hat mines. A small tonnage of ore was mined from each and treated on the properties in stamp mills, which were later torn. down . A survey of old records shows that this ore averaged about $8.00 gold per ton. Development work by the present Company was confined to the 100-foot level until February, 1935, but after that rime the incline shaft was deepened to 425 feet and the 300-foot level was explored east and west of the shaft. Six belts of ore were intersected to the west of the shaft. The ore from these belts was hand sorted and the ore portion was put through the 10-stamp Mulgrave mill to defray operating expenses and to serve as a sample of the deposits. The average recovery per ton from this sorted ore was $6.10. Samples of the ore were sent to the testing laboratories of the Mines Branch, at Ottawa, and of Canadian Industries, Limited, at Toronto. Recommendations from both of these authorities were for removal of the coarse gold by concentration and barrel amalgamation, followed by cyanidation of the residue.

"The Craigmont copper-iron skarn deposit is adjacent to the southern margin of the late Triassic Guichon Creek batholith in south-central British Columbia. Host to the ore are sedimentary and volcanic rocks of the western calc-alkaline belt of the Upper TriassicNicola Group. In the mine area, the Nicola Group rocks are a stratigraphically complex sequence, at least 1800 feet thick, which have been subdivided into Basalt, Rhyolite, Carbonate and Clastic Sediment units. All the units strike and dip parallel to the margin of the Guichon Creek batholith and are within the batholith contact aureole. However, only the Clastic Sediment unit is in contact with the batholith.Most of the skarn and ore is within the Carbonate unit and more specifically within an Interbedded facies that consists of lime sandstone, lime siltstone, quartzo-feldspathic siltstone and argillite. The Interbedded facies and the adjacent barren Massive Limestonefacies are interpreted aspart ofa carbonate reef complex. The distribution of skarn and ore within the Interbedded facies suggests that the facies boundary was a physical and chemical barrier that resulted in concentration of metals adjacent to the Massive Limestone facies.Two stages of skarn formation have been recognized at Craigmont. In Stage I, ore-bearing magnetite-rich and actinolite-epidote-magnetite skarns developed both in basaltic rocks and in Fe-bearing siltstone and argillite of the Interbedded facies, while barren grossular garnet-epidote-calcite-pyrite skarns developed in Fe-poor rhyolitic bands within the Interbedded and Massive Limestone facies . In Stage ll, massive, barren grandite garnet skarn replaced mineralized Stage I skarns in the vicinity of diorite plugs. and specularite ore formed in brecciated Stage I skarn and clastic rocks away from the plugs. Theformation of Stage I skarns required no addition of material, only redistribution and concentration of elements already present within the Interbedded facies. However, the concentration of Cu in Stage lore requires a mechanism for more efficient leaching of Cu from the host rocks, an anomalous concentration of Cu at the site of the Stage I orebody or an additional input of Cu from an external source. The formation of Stage II skarn and ore requires only remobilization and recrystallization of Stage I skarn and ore.Copper and iron are the only elements in economic concentrations in the ore and chalcopyrite is the only significant copper-bearing mineral. Chalcopyrite is disseminated and interstitial to magnetite in Stage I mineralized skarns and is interstitial to specularite in the matrix of Stage II breccia ores. Chalcopyrite also occurs with pyrite as stringer ore in bleached • sediments and rhyolite tuffs in the stratigraphic footwall of the main orebodies.The Craigmont deposit has more features in common with Cu-Fe deposits hosted in metavolcanic and metasedimentary rocks than it has with typical skarn deposits associated with porphyry copper deposits. The orebody is more likely a product of concentration of metal contained within the Nicola Group rocks than of the mineralizing event that produced the . Highland Valley Cu-Mo porphyry deposits in the central part of the Guichon Creek batholith ."

Lots 11 and 12, Range IX, Calumet island, are underlain by a Grenville metamorphic complex into which sills of tourmaline granite pegmatite have been injected. The pegmatite has an average mode-potash feldspar 65 per cent, sodic plagicdase 10 to 20 per cent, quartz 5 to 20 per cent, tourmaline 10 to 15 per cent, accessory minerals < 5 per cent; it is unzoned except for a narrow border zone. Some of the feldspar has been replaced by calcite. Microcline has been ?partially replaced by sodic plagioclase. Three varieties of tourmaline are present (black, blue, and green) and spectrographic analysis suggests progressive compositional changes during its crystallization. The presence of U- and Th-bearing minerals in the pegmatite prompted the Quebec Nickel Cor,porat10n, Ltd., to explore the possibility of developing the pegmatite but it does not appear that this is economically possible at the ? present time. Tt\e Grenville metamorphic complex consists of recrystallized limestones and calcsilicate rocks of the albite-epidoteamphibolite facies and the amphibolite facies, which were derived from sedimentary rocks. Several of these are dis-equilibrium assemblages, and retrograde metamorphism has probably formed biotite and epidote from hornblende. The schistosity of the gneisses dips steeply eastward. Numerous strike faults are roughly parallel to the schistosity and one of the pegmatite sills is bounded by such a fault, dipping at 60 ° with about one foot of fault breccia. The general structure of the map-area seems to be an asymmetrical syncline ?overturned to the west. The emplacement of the pegmatite is associated with a period of folding, metamorphism, and igneous intrusion.

Abstract -The Mobrun VMS deposit in northwestern Quebec does not fit the classic Noranda­ type model, but exhibits characteristics more consistent with a Mattabi-type deposit. The orebodies are underlain by fragmental volcanic rocks indicative of explosive volcanism in shallow water. Felsic volcanic rocks are more abundant than mafic rocks. Alteration assemblages comprise chlorite, carbonate, sericite, and quartz. Broad semi-conformable alteration occurs high in the footwall to the 1100 lens. Mobrun occurs higher in the stratigraphic sequence than most of the other deposits in the Noranda camp. In this part of the stratigraphy, zones of pervasive carbonatization may be more useful guides for exploration than zones of silicification.

A method of applying ammonium hydroxide to a drill stem containing hydrogen sulphide gas and hydro-gen-sulphide-bearing oil and water so as to remove the hydrogen sulphide as ammonium sulphide is de-scribed. It was concluded that the method allowed trips with drill pipe filled with sour fluids to be made more safely, more rapidly, and more economically. INTRODUCTION THE DANGER of poisoning rig crews during drill stem tests of sour wells by exposing them to hydrogen sulphide gas is well known in Canada. Concentrations of hydro-gen sulphide in sour gases range from 0 to 40 volume percent. There have been numerous casualties from hydrogen sulphide exposure during drill stem testing. Some have resulted in permanent injuries; in some cases the injuries have been fatal. For example, in Alberta in 1957 there were four deaths and 100 exposures which required medical treatment. These fatalities and injuries indicate the need for a more effective way of handling hydrogen sulphide in oilfield operations.

"A field trial was conducted at an underground gold mine to evaluate diesel fuel derived from soybean oil (soy-methyl-esters or “biodiesel”) as an alternative to commercial, low-sulphur, number 2 diesel fuel (D2). A 2.7 m3, 18-ton load-haul-dump (LHD) unit, powered by a naturally aspirated, indirect injection (pre-chamber), 100 kW diesel engine was used as the test vehicle. The LHD was equipped with a diesel oxidation catalyst. The LHD operated satisfactorily on the biodiesel fuel. Operators observed a slight decrease in power and an absence of black smoke.Diesel particulate matter (DPM) concentrations were monitored for a six-week period while the LHD was operated with either the biodiesel fuel or the D2 fuel. DPM concentrations were measured in the mining section’s clean air intake, exhaust and on the LHD. Reduction in DPM emissions was determined from the measured difference in DPM concentrations between the clean air intake and the exhaust. The biodiesel fuel reduced energyspecific DPM emissions approximately 75%, from 3.6 ± 1.8 g/kW-hr to 0.86 ± 0.27 g/kWhr. Time-weighted average DPM exposure, measured near the LHD operator, was reduced from 0.67 ± 0.13 mg/sm3 to 0.28 ± 0.12 mg/sm3, or approximately 58%, when the biodiesel fuel was used. IntroductionDiesel exhaust consists of noxious gases and diesel particulate matter (DPM). Recent attention has focussed on the potential carcinogenicity of DPM and the potential health impact on miners. This paper is derived from a document that compiles autogenous and semi-autogenous mill installations worldwide, through the end of 2010. Updates have been solicited from all major mill manufacturers and most have responded. A review of AG/SAG mills sold to date and in the last five years indicates that the AG/SAG mill market is very healthy and the trend is larger diameter mills with high diameter-to-length ratios. Ring motors (gearless) are the preferred drives for large mills even though the power transmitted through a gear drive is expected to near 11,000 kW per pinion in the near future.

"The Brunswick No.12 site concentrator processes 10,500 tonnes per day of a complex lead, zinc, copper and silver ore producing four concentrates by differential flotation. Research over the years has led to increased understanding about the mineralogical and flotation characteristics of the ore. A pilot plant study conducted at Lakefield Research, primarily designed to investigate the technical feasibility of semi-autogenous grinding, provided an opportunity to test recent theories about grind size,, reagent schedule and flowsheet configuration.A fundamental approach was taken with each of the unit processes involved in grinding and flotation. Basic operating and metallurgical criteria were established in each area and a step-by-step implementation program initiated in the plant.Significant improvements in metallurgical and financial performance have been realized through the application of basic grinding and flotation principles using conventional milling equipment and without major capital expenditure. Current operating practice is detailed and metallurgical advancements cited.INTRODUCTIONBrunswick Mining and Smelting operates one of the world's largest lead and zinc mines near Bathurst, New Brunswick. Brunswick is a publicly traded company with majority ownership held by Noranda Minerals (63%). In addition to the No. 12 underground mine, the company operates a lead smelter and phosphate fertilizer plant in Belledune, N.B. and maintains a 25% interest in a joint venture with Noranda Minerals' Heath Steele mine near Newcastle, N.B. Through the four operations, a total of 2000 people are directly employed with fixed assets totalling Cdn$187 million (BM&S, 1991)."
