Gas drainage through surface bore-holes has been the conventional means of methane control for U.S. longwall gobs. However, these vertical boreholes are becoming so costly, and the surface rights so difficult to obtain, that the Bureau of Mines is developing underground gob gas drainage as an alternate means of methane control for U.S. longwalls. Holes are drilled into the roof over the panel and on retreating longwalls, towards the working face from a location inby the face. As the longwall retreats, an increasing portion of the hole intercepts the fracture system over the caved gob. A surface exhauster maintains a vacuum on a pipeline parelleling the panel and draws the methane mixture out of the mine. Auxiliary systems of gob gas drain-age during longwall mining will be essential for an increasing number of coal mines. Deep and gassy mines often find ventilation insufficient for adequate dilution of methane in bleeder entries. Although this cross-measure method of degasification has been used successfully in Europe, some of the European techniques cannot be directly applied to U.S. mines. This is the first study of its kind in this country.

Capital and operating costs have been estimated for removing sulfur dioxide from flue gases of a powerplant of 12,000-kw. capacity by liquid-purification processes, using limestone, ammonia, or sodium sulfite as the reactant. The annnonia and sodium sulfite processes yield end products that may be marketable. Coals containing about 1.5 and 5.0 percent sulfure have been considered. The sulfur dioxide content of the gases to be treated is 0.083 and 0.30 percent, respectively. Estimates have been made for 90-percent removal of the sulfur dioxide from both gases. A third instance has been considered in which 70 percent of the sulfur dioxide is removed from the flue gas of 0.30-percent concentration. The scrubbed gas would contain 0.09 percent sulfur dioxide, which might be within the permissible limit for discharge to the atmosphere in most areas. Although it is unlikely that flue gases with sulfur dioxide concentrations of less than 0.10 percent would require purification, a cost estimate for such a gas is included because an estimate is available for a British plant employing the limestone process at these conditions. Capital investment and operating costs, with no credit for products, are lowest for the limestone process for gases of both concentrations. Crediting the ammonium sulfate and sulfur produced in the ammonia process at their market prices at the end of 1956 of $32 and $28 per ton, respectively, the operating costs of the ammonia process become the lowest for purification of the gas containing 0.30 percent sulfur dioxide. The operating costs of the sodium sulfite process for purifying gas of high sulfur dioxide content approach those of the limestone process when the byproduct sulfur dioxide is credited at $14 per ton. Even if credit for products is allowed for the ammonia and sodium sulfite processes, the operating costs are higher than those of the limestone process for the gas of low sulfur dioxide content. Because of the large quantity of materials that would be produced by removing sulfur dioxide from a relatively small number of plants, credit for products should be allowed with extreme caution.

Slope failure accidents were responsible for about 12% of U.S. surface mine fatalities between 1995 and 2003. Small surface movements on a mine highwall may be precursors of failure that, if detected, could provide sufficient warning to enable workers and machinery to be withdrawn to safety. Radar interferometry offers the necessary precision to detect these movements. Radar has some advantages over other methods in its ability to cover large surface areas for true two-dimensional monitoring day and night under almost any weather condition. Radar’s active transmit/receive mode of operation provides for more direct sampling than do passive optical methods that depend on solar illumination. Improvements in microprocessor speeds and capacities have led to the development of a number of small, portable, ground-based systems; such systems are now being deployed at several locations around the world. As part of an ongoing study of monitoring technologies, researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and Brigham Young University, Provo, UT, cooperated to assess the feasibility of using interferometric radar to monitor mine slope stability. Field tests of a device incorporating prototype equipment were successful in that small, centimeter-scale displacements on rock slopes were detected.

The Bureau of Mines reviewed the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) literature on the nonmetal binary and ternary compounds of the group IVB, VB, and VIB elements, with emphasis directed to the following nonmetals: B, C, N, O, and Si. This review examines each of these binary and selected ternary compounds of the group IVB, VB, and VIB elements as coatings and gives some of their preparative methods, uses, and properties. A total of 259 references were found for these compounds of the nine elements. This review was utilized in the Bureau's research to provide abrasion-, erosion-, and corrosion-resistant coatings in order to conserve critical metals and protect various metallic surfaces in metallurgical, mining, and energy conversion systems.

The U.S. underground coal miner faces a continuing hazard from the fall of roof. At the root of many injuries and fatalities are weak or defective roof strata. Throughout mining history, millions of miles of entry have provided exposure of every conceivable geologic roof hazard. This report describes the geologic origin, association, and potential danger from the most common hazards. Discussions of weak rock include drawrock, rider coals, head coal, stackrock, and stream valley effects. Discontinuities, or roof defects, are described including, clay veins, slickensides, joints, and paleochannels. A number of examples from U.S. coalfields are used to document geologic structure and associated hazards. Roof fall analysis is a methodology used by NIOSH for hazard recognition and prevention; its application and benefit to the industry are discussed.

The tunnel oporation observed in this instance is a main storm sowor starting at tho Mississippi Rivor below the 10th Avenuo SE bridge and will be drivon 6,000 foot at a grado of 1 foot por thousand undor the city of Minneapolis to Konnody and Arthur Stroots NE. A lateral storm sowor, which branchos from the main sovor at 8th Street SE, will oxtond from 10th Avonuo SE to 15th Avonuc SE. Tho tunnele are being drivon with the floor approximately at ground-wator lovol. All waters ontoring the main storm sower vill drain into the Mississippi Rivor. Tho main storm sewer cross soction is excavated to a roughly hox- agonal shapo 10 foot high by 10 foot wido at the contor. The upper half of the tunnol soction is solidly lined with either timber or stool. After all oxcavation is completed, the tunnel will be finished with a concrete circular lining 8 feet in inside diameter. The lateral storm sewer is excavated to a 5-1/2-foot by 7-1/2-foot section and will event- ually be finished with concrete to a modified horseshoe-shaped section 6 feet by 4 feet. Where the back or walls are considered unsafe during excavation, the upper half of the tunnel is lined solidly with timber. The equipment used by the Sower Division, City of Minneapolis, has been selected to meet a number of applications in storm-sewer work with diversified usage in mind. The sand pumps used on this job are rubber-lined, designed to work against a head of 100 foet. Either 4-inch or 6-inch diameter suction and discharge openings may be used. Other equipment, such as pipe, mine rail, flexible hoses, compressors, and general surface shop equipment, is drawn from a contral warohouse. It may be either new or used, depending on what is available at the warehouse. Much of the pipe and mine rail has been used for many years on several different tunnol jobs.

This report evaluates the economic Mining feasibility of four selected mineral deposit types that can be anticipated to be found in (d)(2) lands in the western Brooks Range, Alaska. The major assumption made for this study is the availability of a rail system for transporting equipment and concentrates for the base metal mines. Commodity prices used are those in existence in July 1976. Mine models were established based on known deposits and then evaluated. A lead-zinc-silver-barite deposit for which grades were available but ore reserves were assumed would require approximately 25% higher ore grades or higher metal prices to yield a 15% discounted cash-flow rate of return an the investment if mined at a rate of 10,000 tons per day open pit methods. Large copper-zinc mineral deposits could be mined economically at rates either of 5,000 tons per day underground or 10,000 tons per day by open pit methods. A high-grade copper deposit require a copper price of over one dollar ryes pound to yield an economic profit to be mined at 2,000 tons per day by underground methods. A small high-grade gold underground mine would require a gold price of about $295 per ounce to yield a 20% discounted cash-flow rate of return on investment if all new mine equipment were used and if existing labor rates were paid: Enterprising mining groups operating as partnerships might be able to operate this mine profitably at a gold price of about $152 per ounce, perhaps slightly less.

Reports received by the Bureau of Mines, Department of Commerce, from State mine inspectors, for November, 1930, showed that 219 men were killed in the coal mines of the United States during the month, an increase of 25 over the previous month and 33 over November, 1929. On the other hand the production of coal decreased, the output of 43,329,000 tons in November being 8,397,000 tons less than in October and 9,005,000 tone less than in November a year ago. The larger number of fatalities accompanied by a smaller output of coal resulted in a higher death rate4 per million tons in November than in the same month last year or in October, 1930. The November rate was 5.05, as compared with 3.55 for November, 1929 and 3.75 for October, 1930. The increase in the rate for the industry as a whole was chargeable entirely to bituminous mines, as the anthracite mines had fewer fatalities in November than in either of the previous months to which reference has been made. Reports for bituminous mines alone showed that accidents at this class of mines resulted in a death rate of 5.12, based on 195 fatalities and a production of 38,122,000 tons. This rate indicated an increase of 55 per cent over the rate for October, of the same year, and 72 per cent over the rate for November, 1929. The October record was 146 fatalities and 44,150,000 tons, and that for November a year ago was 138 deaths and a production of 46,514,000 tons.

"Electron spin resonance measurements provide evidence for the formation of long-lived Cr(V) intermediates in the reduction of Cr(Vl) by glutathione redtuctase in the presence of NADPH and for the hydroxyl radical formation during the glutathione reductase catalyzed reduction of Cr(Vl). Hydrogen peroxide suppresses Cr(V) and enhances the formation of hydroxyl radicals. Thus Cr(V) intermediates catalyze generation of hydroxyl radicals from hydrogen peroxide through a Fenton-like reaction. Thus the mechanism of Cr(VI) toxicity might involve the interaction between macromolecules and the hydroxyl radicals.C(Vl) compounds have been found to exert serious toxic and carcinogenic effects on humans and animals (1-3). In contrast, most Cr(III) compounds are relatively nontoxic, noncarcinogenic, and nonmutagenic (1,4). Cr(VI) and Cr(III) oxidation states are different in their metabolic pathways: Cr(VI) , ions are rapidly transported across cellular membrane (1,4,5), while Cr[III) moieties do not easily penetrate cells and are not oxidized by cellular constituents (!). Since it is known that the reduction of Cr(VI) ion is required for its reaction with DNA (1), the molecular mechanisms for the intracellular Cr(Vl) reduction has been the focus of current studies but the details are still not understood.Earlier studies on the mechanism of Cr(Vl) reduction include those on the reduction of Cr(VIJ by glutathione (GSH) .0,6-8), ascorbic acid (9), glucose (10), lactose (IO), galacturonic acid (11), microsome (12), and mitochondrial electron transport chain complexes (13). These studies have shown that the Cr(VI) reduction involves the formation of Cr(V)-containing species which are often considered to be the toxic form of chromium. Thus far, however, no information is· available on the subsequent fate of those biologically formed Cr(V) species, in particular employing well defined biochemical systems. In this context, we report here our investigations of the reduction of Cr(VI) by glutathione reductase (GSSG-R). This enzyme was selected because it is ubiquitously present in cellular systems and it has been postulated to be involved in the Cr(VI) reduction (14-17) but the underlying mechanism has not been clarified. We find that the reduction proces·s involves not only Cr(V) but also ·OH radicals. We further investigate the reactivity of Cr(V) and find that it catalyzes generation of OH radical from H2O 2 through a Fenton-like reaction. The role of ·OH in Cr(VI) carcinogenicity is suggested from this study."

Sediment is one of America's greatest pollutants. More than a billion tons of sediment reach the major streams of the United States annually(l). Damages are reflected in the reduced carrying capacity of streams, clogged reservoirs, destroyed habitat for fish and other aquatic life, filled navigation channels, increased flood crests, degraded facilities for water-based recreation, increased industrial and domestic water treatment costs, premature aging of lakes by enrichment of the water with silt-carried fertilizer that promotes algae growth, destroy crops, and reduce productivity of flood plain soils. Erosion and sedimentation are natural processes that are usually gentle actions releasing controlled amounts of silt from watersheds to receiving streams. Surface mining activities accelerate these natural processes and short duration, high intensity storms can become a violent force moving thousands of tons of soil in a brief period of time. Cover is a very important factor. With the removal of ground cover, water moves across the denuded area on its own terms picking up soil particles as it flows and leaving gullies behind. The susceptibility of strip-mined land to erosion depends on: 1.Physical characteristics of the overburden 2. Degree of slope 3. Length of slope 4. Climate 5. Amount and rate of rainfall 6. Type and percent of vegetative ground cover. By development of erosion and sedimentation control plans before disturbance of the area, many of the detrimental effects of strip mining can be prevented.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines publication is an analysis of underground coal mine fire incidents occurring in the United States during the 15years from 1978 through 1992. The fire data used in this analysis were obtained from U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration mine fire investigation reports. Fires were analyzed by year, State, coalbed thickness, mine size, mining method, ignition source, burning substance, location, equipment involved, detection method, time of day, time of year, number of injuries and fatalities, method of extinguishment, and evacuation measures taken. In all, 164 fires are included in this report, or an average of 10.8 fires per year. The most fires occurred in West Virginia, Kentucky, and Pennsylvania, respectively. However, the fire incidence rates for these States, expressed as the number of fires per million tons of coal mined, were the lowest, second lowest, and fourth lowest of all underground coal producing States. The most common ignition source was electricity; the most common burning substance was coal; the most frequent fire location was the belt entry; the most common equipment involved in fires was the conveyor belt; and the most common extinguishing agent was water.

Over the years, more than 20,000 mine seals have been erected in underground coal mines in the United States. Seals are used extensively in underground mines to isolate worked-out areas, active mine fire zones, and to control water inundations. Seals are most often built directly in the mine and can be fabricated from blocks made of wood or cementitious material. Recently, several explosions occurred within sealed areas of underground U.S. coal mines. These explosions, believed to be initiated by lightning strikes on the surface, destroyed numerous seals and caused considerable damage external to the sealed area. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health is conducting research to develop design guidelines, to investigate noninvasive techniques to characterize seal strength properties, and to evaluate seal test methods. As part of this work, a 30-ft wide, 16.1-ft tall and 4-ft thick seal was built in an underground experimental mine using cement and foamed water. Two types of noninvasive techniques are currently being investigated, namely the Schmidt Hammer for measuring compressive strength and ground penetrating radar (GPR) for detecting the presence of anomalies (e.g., voids, discontinuities) within the seal. Once these noninvasive tests were completed, the seal was subjected to destructive explosion testing. This study presents the results of the Schmidt Hammer tests, GPR scans, and the characteristics of seal failure during explosion testing.

"INTRODUCTION Scheelite occurring in tactite at the Black Rock tungsten mine, near Benton in Mono County, Calif., was investigated by the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the Geological Survey as part of their search for additional sources of supply of strategic minerals authorized under the Strategic Materials Act. 3/4/The work accomplished by the Bureau, and the assays of samples taken are described in this manuscript. The ore found aided materially in prolonging the operating life of the mine during the recent national emergency, supplying much-needed tungsten for war use. ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of investigations of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more efficient utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. This report contains a cost estimate of the Bureau of Mines process for dewatering Alaskan placer effluent streams with polyethylene oxide (PEO). In this process effluent slurry is withdrawn from the placer plant pond system after a primary settling stage. A dilute PEO solution is injected into the slurry line to flocculate the fine, suspended solids. The flocculated solids are dewatered on a stationary screen. Clarified water is returned to the placer operation or discharged, while the 35 percent solids waste is pumped back into the mine cut. Cost estimates are presented for dewatering plants processing 1,000 gallons per minute of effluent slurry at three representative turbidity levels. Both the placer and the dewatering plants operate on the same 1-shift-per-day, 6-day-per-week schedule for the 100-day Alaskan operating season. Estimated fixed capital costs for these plants processing placer with effluent turbidities of 1,000, 3,000, and 5,000 nephelometric turbidity units (NTU) are approximately $29,000, $31,000, and $34,000, respectively, on a fourth quarter 1986 basis. Operating costs are estimated to be $0.34, $0.37, and $0.40 per thousand gallons of effluent slurry.

The Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, is conducting research to devise substitute corrosion-resistant materials by using ion implantation to form alloyed regions near the surfaces of metals. These alloys were prepared by implanting 25-kev Cr+ and/or Ni+ ions into iron. Their resistance to corrosive attack was evaluated by determining their anodic polarization behavior under potentiodynamic conditions in a solution containing sodium chloride, boric acid, and sodium borate. These electrochemical studies have shown that the general corrosion resistance of ion-implanted alloys was comparable to nominally equivalent bulk alloys. The pitting-corrosion resistance of the ion-implanted alloys was superior to that of iron, although not as good as that of most of the bulk alloys tested.

The Bureau of Mines determined minimum energies for direct initiation of expanding gaseous detonation waves in acetylene-oxygen mixtures. Composition limit ranges for the initiation of detonation with fixed energies have been compared to data in the literature. Assuming that the stored electrical energy is completely converted to thermal energy, the agreement between the energy of primary explosive initiators and the energy of electrical discharge initiators was good. Minimum energies for initiation of detonation in the most sensitive composition (40 percent C20 plus 60 percent 0 2) were: 0.64 joule at an initial pressure of 1/4 atmosphere, 5.0X10-2 joule at 1/2 atmos¬phere, and 3.7X10-3 joule at I atmosphere. Fuel concentrations in mixtures initiated to detonation by 4.9X102 joules ranged from 10 to 65 percent C2H2 at 1/4 atmosphere, 10 to 67 percent C2H2 at 1/2 atmosphere, and 9 to 68 percent C2H2 at 1 atmosphere.

Measurements of surface magnetic field noise were made at various locations over the Geneva Coal Mine near Price, Utah, on June 12, 1973. The locations selected were on the surface over emergency locator beacons underground at depths between 3S0 meters (1150 ft.) and 488 meters (1600 ft.). The surface terrain where these measurements were made was mountainous, and access was difficult. There were no power lines within several miles, and the weather was clear; therefore, the magnetic noise levels were about as low as will normally occur. Results of measurements of distant sferics indicate rather sharp cutoff frequencies below which broadband, impulsive noise is attenuated. The mechanism of propagation for this noise above the daytime cutoff frequency of 3500 Hz and the nighttime cutoff frequency of 1700 Hz is deduced to be a waveguide formed by the D or F layers of ionosphere as an upper plane and the earth as a lower plane.

7. Development of Acoustic Seal Checking System The acoustic approach was shown in Section 4 of this report to be the most promising concept for checking the seals. This section describes the development of this concept into a working hardware system to be used later in the field test program. This development effort included: (1) Theoretical analysis of the acoustic behavior in the mine using acoustic modeling- techniques. (2) Experimental determination of acoustic patterns in mine passages. (3) Refinement of the theoretical model. (4) Verification of final theoretical predictions in the quarter-scale laboratory model of a mine passage and seal. (5) Development of system specifications. (6) Development of the Acoustic Prototype Seal Checking System. 7. 1 Analysis of the Acoustic Seal Checker Concept The acoustic seal checker concept is based on a model which combines corridor acoustics and hole transmission theory. The idealized model for the mine sealing application is shown schematically in Figure 66. A high intensity acoustic- source is located in a corridor at a, position adjacent to the location to be sealed. The acoustic signal transmitted through the seal is monitored by a microphone pick-up placed on the opposite side.

In addition to nine powder and gaseous extinguishants of propagating Pittsburgh seam coal dust-air explosions earlier evaluated,6 10 other powders have similarly been evaluated under like conditions such that wall quenching of the coal dust-air flames was virtually absent and the dust concentration was temporally and spatially uniform to within about ±5 percent. None of the newly examined extinguishants was better than Purple-K (potassium bicarbonate); the 10 of this report are anhydrite (calcium sulfate), monobasic (4 types) and dibasic ammonium phosphate, natural and synthetic cryolite (sodium fluoalumi-nate), sodium sulfate, and tricalcium phosphate. Except for anhydrite, sodium sulfate, tricalcium phosphate, and the cryolites, these materials were about equally effective, when present in relatively low concentrations (weight-percent of the coal dust-extinguishant mixture). The maximum oxygen concentration for the extinguishment of otherwise uninhibited coal dust explosions and the influence of coal dust particle size and the volatile content of the coal were also explored. For the present, the choice of the inhibitor among the good ones evaluated is not as critical as the system to be used to deploy the extinguishant against a coal dust explosion.
