A preliminary mineral-dressing study of five samples of East Texas limonitic brown iron ores was conducted as part of the Bureau of Mines program to develop and extend domestic resources of iron ore. The samples were considered to be typical of ore currently being mined and beneficiated by the Lone Star Steel Co. and Sheffield Steel Co. The objective of the research was to investigate those mineral-dressing unit operations that might recover some of the fine iron lost in current industrial wastes or perhaps improve the recoveries when applied to the ores as well. Since current industrial beneficiation practice yields a washed limonite analyzing 41 to 45 percent iron, higher grade concentrates were not sought in this laboratory study. Laboratory investigation included washing and sizing, reduction roasting, and subsequent magnetic separation of the finely ground roasted materials. The results showed that laboratory recoveries of over 80 percent of the iron were possible, for the ores investigated, at concentrate grades comparable to those expected from cur-rent industrial beneficiation practice. Electrical grounding is essential for the safe operation of power systems. A low-impedance path to ground is necessary to prevent the possibility of dangerously high potentials in human work areas. If for any reason this ground connection becomes faulty, a serious hazard may exist. One reason for faulty ground connections is ground bed corrosion. Corrosion of electrical ground rods has plagued the power industry and appeared in coal mine power systems. This paper will investigate ground rod corrosion, its cause, and possible solutions. Included is an evaluation of various ground rods for their ability to resist corrosion under stray current conditions. -The first known study of X-it3 Rod Corrosion is also presented.

The standard method of employing preliminary air-drying to determine the moisture in coal has been criticized with respect to the loss of heating value from excessive air-drying. By this method, the coal is air-dried at approximately 10-15° above room temperature with the loss in weight being less than 0.1 percent per hour, and then the residual moisture at 105°C is determined. The total moisture is calculated from these two values.

"The Miami-West Palm Beach belt of silica sand, which may be suitable for the manufacture of high-grade glass, extends 65 miles northward from the neighborhood of Miami to the vicinity of West Palm Beach, The sand presumably originated in the host rocks constituting the oceanward slope of the Appalachian Mountains and the Piedmont Plateau of Georgia and the Carolinas. The sand now lies in a long, narrow, and probably thin belt that forms a dune-capped terrace marking a previous stage of submergence. The highest dune crests appear to be no more than 30 feet above sea level, and the water table is about 10 or 15 feet below the general level of the terrace.The width of the belt in several places is known to be more than a mile, and the thickness of the clean glass sand sampled ranged from 4 to more than 7 feet. Visual inspection and the meager data indicate the existence of bodies of glass sand large enough to supply foreseeable markets.Analyses of three samples indicate that beneficiation would make the sand suitable for the better grades of ordinary and flint glass.The prospective grade and quantity of sand, an available market in Florida for glassware, and the expectation of postwar expansion of the new industry of glass producing justify more detailed exploratory work and beneficiation testing.U. Route No. 1, Old Dixie Highway, the Seaboard Railway, and the Florida East Coast Railway, all substantially parallel and usually within a width of a mile or two, run along parts of the belt or between it and the coast. In addition to many streets and unpaved roads, a paved road crosses the belt at right angles about every 5 miles. Numerous towns are situated within or near the belt. Any area selected for a mining, processing, and manufacturing plant would be near a railroad, a highway, and water and also accessible to public utilities.The subtropical climate, famous for its pleasantly warm winters, would preclude seasonal interruption of plant operations."

Fifty years ago, the belief that "fillers" were added to paints for the sole purpose of diluting and cheapening the pigment may have been justified; but paint technology has made tremendous progress since that time, and today both the manufacturer and the consumer know that the judicious use of fillers may add desirable properties to a paint that cannot be introduced in any other way. A growing respect for these accessory materials has led to the use of the more euphemistic term "extender." The names "extender" and "filler" are to a considerable degree synonymous. The newer term, "extender," is adopted in this paper, though it is actually no more descriptive than the older name. Stewart's3/ definition of extender is: "A cheap pigment, usually of an inert type, used to extend or increase the bulk of a paint, thus reducing its unit cost. Extenders are also used to adjust the consistency of a paint and to let down colored pigments of great tinting strength. The use of an extender in a paint does not necessarily mean the resultant product will be inferior. In fact, extenders sometimes, improve -certain characteristics of a film." All extenders are not cheap, as, for example, wet-ground mica and diatomite. Research in the, use of extenders (also sometimes called "inerts") has been one of the host active branches of study in the paint field; and many thousands of dollars have been spent in establishing the physical and chemical characteristics required of various natural mineral extenders for numerous paint formulas

This report describes a method for determining the stress in rock based on a requirement for static equilibrium ; namely , that the total load on a sufficiently large area must remain constant even after a drift or stope is mined in the area . The method is based on mathematical relationships that are independent of the elastic properties of the rock and the stress distribution near the underground opening . In addition to determining the preexisting stress (before mining ) , the method described can be used to determine the change in stress due to mining .

Four samples of Pittsburgh-bed coal, of various size consist and ash content were dewatered in a pilot-size vacuum-disk filter partially enclosed with a steam jacket. Steam fed at 2.5 to 12.5 pounds per minute reduced the moisture content of the filter cakes from 2.8 to 13.8 percentage points more than normal vacuum dewatering. Approximately 1.5 pounds of steam was required to remove 1 pound of water.

This paper, describing mining and milling methods and costs at the Gold Hill mine, is one of a series being published by the Bureau of Mines. Boise Basin, in which the geld Hill mine is located, is in the central part of Boise County, Idaho, about 30 miles by air line northeast of Boise. The mine, owned and operated by Talache Mines, Inc., is at the southern end of the town of Quartzburg. About 115 to 125 tons daily is mind by square-setting and is treated in an amalgamation plant.

Chemical processes using coal often require economical removal of dust from high-temperature gases. Laboratory-scale investigations by the Federal Bureau of Mines have shown that an aluminum silicate fiber is suitable for filtering dust from gases at 1,800° F. The effects of the bulk density of the filter, rate of gas-flow, concentration of dust in the filter, fiber diameter, depth of filter, and concentration of dust in the feed gas on removal efficiency, pressure drop, and capacity of the filter to hold dust were studied. The laboratory filters were difficult to construct because the fibers were longer than the tube diameter. This caused irregular distribution of fiber that permitted dust-laden gases to leak through channels developed in the filter. Leaks also formed between the filter and the tube wall, but this was minimized by improved filter design. However, edge leaks and leaks through channels in the filter probably would be insignificant in properly constructed filters of industrial size. As the concentration of dust in the filter increased, the efficiency of the low-density filters decreased, contrary to expectations, probably because a higher percentage of the dust passed through channels that developed in the filter. The efficiency of high-density filters, however, increased with the concentration of dust in the filter. Results indicate that loosely packed filters would have a longer life than tightly packed filters at the expense of efficiency. As regeneration or replacement of stationary filters is difficult and expensive, loose filters would be best for filtering gases containing much dust. Gases containing little dust may be cleaned with tightly packed filters to obtain higher efficiency. For either type of filter, precleaning with cyclone separators or other means is advisable.

An examination of the physical properties of manganese ores is being made at the Mississippi. Valley Station of the United States Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy, Rolla, Missouri. The object of the study is to find out how much these ores can be beneficiated by such processes as jigging, tabling, magnetic separation, and flotation. Some. of the results were given in an earlier report.4 Eighty samples obtained from various prospects and mines throughout the country have been examined; this is a very small part of those that should be examined before the work can be a definite factor in-the appraisal of manganese ores or the guide in beneficiation which the operators seek. The ore deposits are not expected to reach to great depths vertically, after the manner of copper and gold, but in lateral distribution their greater extent is notable. This applies particularly to the residual and replacement deposits of manganese.

Ion elutriation was used to extract silver cyanide complexes and free cyanide from aqueous streams containing up to 10 ppm silver and 5 ppm free cyanide. Screening tests selected nine of 350 different surfactants for further, larger scale experiments. The screening procedure used 0.1 g of each of the surfactants in 300 mL of synthetic wastewater. Air was sparged into the test cell at 50 cc/min. The foam was refluxed during the tests and was not sampled. Samples of the solution were taken at specified intervals and analyzed by wet chemical methods for free cyanide and by atomic absorption for silver content. The most effective surfactants lowered the silver and free cyanide concentrations to less than 0.5 ppm in 1 h or less. These surfactants were quaternary amine salts with one long chain (C12-C18) organic group and three methyl groups. Experiments using 3 L batches of wastewater or an ion elutriation cell continuously fed with solution draining from an inactive heap leach operation confirmed the results from the screening tests.

The Bureau of Mines developed methods for fragmenting oil shale formations with chemical explosives to prepare oil shale for in situ retorting and to evaluate the extent of fragmentation by various methods. A combination of three methods of explosive fracturing was used: (1) The displacement and detonation of a liquid chemical explosive in a natural fracture system; (2) the use of 60-pct dynamite to relieve stress conditions of the rock around the wellbore; and (3) the use of pelletized TNT in a series of wellbore shots to fragment the oil shale. An attempt was made to seal or grout around the fragmented oil shale by drilling 67 holes and displacing approximately 200 bbl of neat cement in the fracture system to aid in evaluating the fragmented zone, Seven methods were used to evaluate the fragmented zone. The primary evaluation method was the recording of seismic waves to delineate the fragmented zone with results based on arrival time, amplitude, and record quality. The data from the seismic measurements indicated the extensively fragmented zone was approximately 95 ft in diameter and 70 ft thick. Results of the remaining methods of evaluating fractures--including air-flow tests, coring of the expected fragmented zone, elevation measurements to indicate overburden crowning, and surveys with high-speed camera, impression packer, and down-hole camera--agreed with and supported the data from seismic measurements. Further field application of explosive fracturing and evaluation methods is needed to determine when a zone of oil shale is effectively fragmented for efficient in situ retorting.

Application of a new chemical spray in a mercury mine in which ore rich in native metal was causing salivation among the miners has given such favorable results that it is believed the process will be useful in other mines and perhaps in some plants where similar conditions exist. The process was originated by Merle Randall, professor of chemistry at the University of California. GENERAL PROBLEM The presence of native quicksilver in mines from which the metal is produced has long been a source of trouble and danger to the workers. Men have been sickened and some of them have been disabled by exposure to the vapors present (even in workings that were well-ventilated by ordinary standards) and to contact with dust, dirt, and moisture with which the finely divided quicksilver was mixed. Where the ore was rich and this exposure was considerable men were able to work only a few days or weeks; where the exposure was less they were weakened and subject to ailments often attributed to other causes.

The performance of six dense-medium washers was evaluated in five preparation plants. Three of the plants were making a two-product separation that produced a clean coal and a refuse; one plant employed dense-medium vessels in series to effect a primary and a secondary separation; and one plant was equipped with a two-compartment washer effecting two separations in one vessel. The separate secondary drum-type washer produced a low-ash metallurgical coal and an intermediate-ash product suitable for plant fuel or steam generation. The two-compartment washer produced a premium anthracite product and a middlings product. The sharpness-of-separation values ranged from good to excellent for the five primary separations and for the secondary separation.

Many of the rare-earth oxides are now commercially available in pure form and they have a variety of potential technical uses. Thermodynamic data for these oxides, however, are rather sparse. It is one of the functions of the Bureau of Mines to fill the need for this type of information. This report gives the results of low-temperature heat-capacity and high-temperature heat-content measurements by the Bureau of Mines of lanthanum sesquioxide. The entropy at 298.15° K. was evaluated and heat-content and entropy increments above 298.15° K. were obtained to 1,800° K. The results were combined with the known heat of formation at 298.15° K. to derive heats and free energies of formation at higher temperatures. Sufficient information is now available to permit reliable thermodynamic calculations involving lanthanum sesquioxide within the temperature range 298° to 2,000° K.

The Bureau of Mines conducted an analysis to determine criteria for steady-state, laminar flow boundary conditions for a coiled-tube gas viscosimeter by comparing experimental data from a thick-walled, stainless steel capillary in a horizontal, straight-tube condition, with similar data taken after the same capillary was formed into a helix. Overlapping volumetric f10wrates and pressure drops are covered for both configurations at pressure levels of 28, 225, and 1,000 psia at 3000 K. Friction factor, Reynolds number, and Dean number correlation plots show conditions where the coi1ed-tube flow deviates from straight-tube flow. The coiled-tube data indicate departure from Poiseui11e steady-state laminar flow at a Reynolds number close to 390 and a Dean number of about 15. Below these conditions and consistent with the data reported, Dean's circulation appears negligible. For the particular coil used, a conservative upper limit of 10 is chosen for the Dean number corresponding to an upper limit of about 250 for the Reynolds number.
