Pore-filling organic material concentrated uranium to form sandstone-hosted primary uranium deposits in the Jurassic Morrison Formation of the Grants uranium region, New Mexico. Petrographic observations and radiometric ages for primary ore in the Westwater Canyon Member require that the organic material was emplaced early in the diagenetic history of the host sandstone; in fact, organic material was emplaced before major compaction. This inferred early emplacement constrains models concerning the nature and origin of the organic material and thus also constrains models of ore genesis. Reconstruction of the burial history of the basin indicates that Late Jurassic-Early Cretaceous time, the interval of inferred emplacement of the organic material, was probably not a time of hydrocarbon generation and migration. Nuclear magnetic resonance analyses, elemental abundances, and isotopic studies provide further constraints on the nature of the organic material, and data from these studies are consistent with a humic acid rather than an oil origin. In addition, the overall tabular shape of primary uranium orebodies and the way these orebodies are suspended in the host sandstone mimics Recent deposits of humate, the precipitated form of humic acids. The critical clue that favors a humic acid origin for ore-related organic material is provided by the nature and patterns of postdepositional alterations that are spatially and temporally related to primary ore, specifically destruction of detrital magnetite and ilmenite (iron-titanium oxide) grains. Humic acids are implicated in the destruction of iron-titanium oxide grains because these organic acids are one of the most effective natural agents in leaching of Iron from these grains. Thus, timing constraints, chemical evidence, orebody geometry, and the nature and patterns of ore-related alterations favor a humic acid origin and suggest that an oil origin is highly unlikely. Because alteration of iron-titanium oxide grains tracks the pathways of humic-bearing solutions through the host sandstones, it is possible to trace these solutions back to their source. Alteration patterns in the Westwater Canyon Member suggest that the humic-bearing solutions originated as pore fluids in the mudflat facies of the overlying Brushy Basin Member and moved into adjacent sandstones during early dewatering of the mudstones. The humic acids precipitated, by the process of cation loading, in tabular layers. Uranium was concentrated within these tabular layers by complexation with the humic acids to form primary uranium orebodies.

V. Rajaram's paper does not accurately reflect the status of Eastern oil shale development as it stands today. Today, there are numerous firms and research organizations pursuing development of the Eastern oil shale resource. Details of the current projects can be found in the symposium proceedings for the 1985 Eastern Oil Shale Symposium held in Lexington, KY, in November 1985. Additionally, the comparison of the Paraho and HYTORT processes is invalid because the HYTORT process design used it not an accurate representation of the HYTORT process. I will briefly address this point. It is disconcerting to see the author reference hydroretorting work conducted at the Institute of Gas Technology (IGT) (circa 1978) in the introduction, which indicates hydroretorting (the HYTORT process concept) yields of up to 250% of the Fischer Assay oil yield, and then turn around and base the remainder of the paper on the 1981 "Synthetic Fuels From Eastern Oil Shale Report," which depicts the HYTORT process as yielding only 115% of Fischer Assay. Indeed, work conducted at IGT to 1981 indicates commercial oil yields for the HYTORT process would be in the range of 200% to 210% of Fischer Assay. A more thorough literature search by the author would have yielded a 1981 publication by Schora et al., entitled "Update on the HYTORT Process" presented at the Symposium on Synthetic Fuels From Oil Shale in Nashville, TN, October 1981. This paper thoroughly discusses the shortcomings of the referenced study with respect to the HYTORT process. For the interested reader, I can also recommend a June 1984 report entitled "An Economic Comparison of Five Process Concepts for Using Eastern Oil Shale," published by Los Alomos National Laboratory (LA-10106-MS, Parkinson et al., NTIS No. DE84-015981). This study applies a realistic HYTORT design (circa 1982) and indicates that HYTORT is the most econom¬ical method of processing Eastern oil shales (about $20/bbl less than Paraho). Additionally, completion of the HYTORT feasibility study in June 1983 by Phillips Petroleum Co., Bechtel Group Inc., HYCRUDE Corp., and IGT has resulted in development of designs that will make the use of HYTORT on Eastern oil shales even more economic. HYCRUDE Corp., a second-tier subsidiary of IGT, is involved in commercialization and licensing of the HYTORT process and is active in efforts to develop the Eastern oil shale resource. As such, I am disappointed to see outdated material that has the potential for adversely affecting development of Eastern oil shale resources published in MINING ENGINEERING. I can only hope that this response will serve to mitigate any negative opinions that may have been formed. Today, activity in commercializing Eastern oil shales dominates the oil shale scene in the US and indicates a realization of the potential for these shales. Reply by V. Rex, Jr. I hope that Hycrude's work will lead to the funding of a pilot plant to demonstrate that yields of greater than 200% of Fischer Assay can be achieved in a commercial plant using eastern US oil shales.

INTRODUCTION Jack Spalding in Deep Mining, Chapter 3, states: "In deep mining, to start stoping an orebody without a definite plan of operations covering the whole extraction from beginning to end is to invite serious trouble. Any stoping without plan is bound to leave, toward the end, a number of pillars, remnants, or promontories, which, as they are reduced in size, are liable to fail and cause a general collapse. The object of stope planning is so to mine an orebody that at no stage in the operation is a remnant left. Definition: `When a block of ore is stoped in such a way that eventually a small piece is left entirely surrounded by stoping, that piece is termed an island remnant.' The design of and adherence to a plan of stoping is of greater importance in preventing rock bursts than the type of ground control adopted." This, of course, is just an example of the old axiom that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. And in this context, mining does not have to be very deep before poor ground conditions, made worse by lack of good planning, force a mining company to resort to more expensive methods of ore recovery. At all times when rock pressures become excessive, stoping plans must be devised to avoid the creation of pillars or promontories. This is most readily recognized when mining deep narrow ore veins by open methods. It would be a little more general to say that stoping systems should seek to avoid or minimize localized concentrations of rock stress. Ore bodies, and particularly those at Falcon¬bridge, can reach large widths and leaving pillars for extraction at a later time cannot be avoided. However, good planning can reduce the effect of factors which create bad ground conditions. The necessary ingredients of planning are time and information: time to formulate and revise ideas; information, gained in exploration and early development, to provide the fullest knowledge of the ore body. In this way, plans become meaningful. It must always be kept in mind that the long-term results of good planning often require decisions not compatible with reaching earliest full production. PLANNING FOR DEEP MINING At Falconbridge Nickel Mines ore bodies presently being found and prepared for production lie at depths in excess of 610 m (2000 ft) below surface. Current un¬derground exploration is being directed towards favor¬able locations below 914.4 and 1219.2-m (3000 and 4000-ft) depths, at most mines. The Onaping Deep ore body has been traced to a depth of 1508.8 m (4950 ft) and at Falconbridge mine the ore body is under develop¬ment below the 5000 level. Planning for more efficient ground control has therefore become an important con¬sideration of future mining. HYDRAULIC BACK FILLING AND CUT-AND-FILL STOPING The advent of hydraulic back filling has led to the increasing use of flat-back cut-and-fill stoping methods during the last ten years, until it has probably become the commonest method of mining deep ore deposits in Canada. These methods account for almost all the pro¬duction from Falconbridge Mines at this time. The ad¬vantages claimed are: safety-a minimum of open ground; very little supplementary ground support (except rockbolted backs and walls); greater selectivity and flexibility in extraction (horizontal extension of the vein, high grade ore stringers going out into the walls); and high productivity and increased mechanization in larger ore widths. There is some difference of opinion as to whether hydraulic classified tailing back fill provides any great resistance to initial closure of the stope walls. The evi¬dence available suggests that it does not. Addition of portland cement to the back fill just prior to placement has produced a material having the properties of a weak concrete. It is confidently expected that this material will assist greatly in the efficient mining of pillars and generally in giving increased ground support to oppose closure. PRINCIPLES OF STOPE PLANNING BY LONGITUDINAL FLAT-BACK CUT-AND-FILL Again quoting from Spalding: "The practice of con¬trolling output by stopping and starting stopes is bad¬stopes once started should proceed without interruption, and control must therefore be obtained by altering the rate of stoping. It is therefore necessary that faces should normally advance at a medium rate which can be boosted, if required, to give temporarily a greater output. Modern high productivity stoping methods, however, generally aim to achieve and maintain the maximum output possible from a stope. Control of tonnage and grade, therefore, becomes a more complex problem requiring very careful scheduling and organiza¬tion. With the basic method of flat-back overhand stoping using hydraulic fill, it is not usually possible to mine in such a way as to avoid creating pillars." Consider an ore body as illustrated in Fig. 1. It is 274.3 m (900 ft) high by 228.6 m (750 ft) long on strike and averages 4.6 m (15 ft) in ore width. It rep¬resents approximately 907 000 t (1,000,000 st). The ore body could be mined by advancing one long single face through all the levels from bottom to top. A total face length of 228.6 m (750 ft) would accommo¬date five 45.7-m (150-ft) stopes. See Fig. la. Each of these stopes would produce approximately 1814 t/m (2000 stpm) and the ore body would require a period of ten years for complete extraction. A possible im¬provement to this scheme might be to stagger the indi¬vidual stope faces. See Fig. 1b. Problems of hanging wall failure can be reduced by this arrangement. From the point of view of reducing travelway maintenance, it is good practice to employ a stoping system of retreat. In this paper, response surface methodology was applied to optimize the experimental conditions for the wet grinding of synthetic rutile. The effects of parameters such as rotation speed, solids concentration and duration of grinding on grinding efficiency were systematically investigated and the process conditions were optimized, using a nonlinear regression model based on central composite design. The statistical analysis of the results showed that in the range studied, the grinding efficiency of synthetic rutile was significantly affected by the rotation speed of the conical ball mill. According to results from analysis of variance, the value of the determination coefficient (R2=0.9989) indicates that the predicted values are found to be in good agreement with experimental values. The optimized experimental conditions were as follows: a rotation speed of 350 rpm, a solids concentration of 27.31% and a grinding time of 50.31 min, respectively. Under optimum conditions, the predicted grinding efficiency of 94.79% is obtained. The experimental values from the validation experiments were well within the predicted value of the model.

Kittilä Mine is a gold mine located in Northern Finland, owned and operated by Agnico Eagle Finland. The mining operation started in 2008 with open pits which were completed in 2012 and production moved to being entirely underground. The mine consists of four separate orebodies, currently producing 2.0 Mt per annum, and requiring over 19 km of development on a yearly basis. The principal mining method is long hole stoping with delayed backfill. Microseismic monitoring was initially tested in the Suuri orebody, in the mining block between the 625 and 500 Levels. A small monitoring system was installed in 2018, after observations of stress-induced damage to the rock mass and in anticipation of future mining at greater depth. The initial goals were to evaluate if useful data could be recorded and test the signal quality of different sensor types. Prior to 2018, ground control related challenges in the Suuri and Roura mining blocks had been mostly related to sill pillar mining and block movements between weak graphitic schist planes. Seismic monitoring in the Suuri deposit proved successful for following the rock mass response to mining and helped support the rationale for early monitoring in the new, deeper mining block in Rimpi at 900 m depth. Preliminary geotechnical characterization and testing of the rock mass showed areas of silicification in the footwall rocks with potentially continuous structural features. Seismic monitoring of the Rimpi area has confirmed the brittle behavior of the rock mass, with strong seismic responses induced by stress changes following blasting being recorded. In addition to this expected behavior, a large magnitude event associated with significant damage in the footwall drive development 90 m above the stoping was experienced. Initial investigation of the rockburst showed two separate damage locations with over 300 tons of displaced rock. The seismic monitoring system recorded this rockburst as a single seismic event with magnitude significantly larger than previously recorded. Additional analyses indicated a possible thrust fault event, triggering two separate strainbursts. Following this event, the ground support system was upgraded in parts of the footwall drives to improve dynamic capacity. "A wind tunnel was designed to examine air flow, heat transfer and layering near an active fire at a working face. This tunnel simulates an active entry in an underground coal mine including an attached cross-cut of similar dimensions. A steel rectangular duct 1 ft. (0.305 m) tall, 3 ft. (0.914 m) wide and 10 ft. (3.05 m) long composes the main body of the tunnel and represents a mine entry. Air flow is generated by an exhausting centrifugal fan attached to one end of the crosscut. This fan was sized to supply air velocities based on Froude scaling. A 6 in. (15.25 cm) propane burner is used to simulate fires of various heat release rates at the working face. Thermocouples are used to map heat layering in the tunnel. Ports are installed for the introduction of tracer gases into and from sampling the system. Barometric, differential pressure, and temperature sensors are also included to monitor environmental conditions. Details about the design and testing of the system are presented including an overview of how the tunnel was scaled to accurately represent fire and flow phenomena. Finally, the proposed use of the tunnel for better understanding of mine fire phenomena and prevention is given. INTRODUCTION Fires in underground mines have been a concern since the dawn of mining. While technological advancements, regulations and best practices have improved both fire detection and firefighting techniques, mine fires continue to represent high risk events. From 2006 through 2015, fires accounted for 1.06% of fatalities in underground coal mines and 0.85 percent of fatalities in all underground mines in the United States (U.S. Department of Labor, 2006 to 2015). In addition to the risk of loss of life, mine fires can cause millions of dollars in equipment damages and lost production revenue. Extensive research has been conducted on how fires occur and spread in underground mines. In addition to testing conducted by government agencies such as the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and the National Institute for Safety and Health (NIOSH) (e.g.(Liming, 2006), researchers like Verakis and Dalzell (Verakis, 1988) and Lowndes, et. al. (Lowndes, 2004) have furthered this field by studying ignitions and propagation of conveyor belt fires. While the studies of belt fires in mines are extensive, studies focused on fires at the working face are few in number. The particularly confined space and limited access to a working face, coupled with less robust, temporary ventilation controls create a unique environment that warrants special attention. Separate from studies on mine fires, the use of tracer gases to characterize flow patterns in normal mining ventilation is well established. In 1982, Timko and Thimons (Timko, 1982) outlined current and future applications of sulfur hexafluoride (SF6). However, little experimentation has been conducted to study specifically how tracer gases might be used to evaluate active mine fires and the fires’ effect on the surrounding mine environment (e.g.(Lindsay, 2014). In order to better understand the dynamics of smoke layering from a fire in an enclosed space, a small-scale apparatus was designed to map smoke layering and to examine other aspects of fire behavior at a working face. In addition to studying smoke flow around an active fire, experiments will be conducted using tracer gases in order to determine how they might be used to evaluate an underground fire."

Scale physical models, constructed according to the principle of similarity theory, are widely used to simulate the mining disturbances to surrounding strata and to evaluate the effectiveness of implemented ground-control techniques. This technique has also been used for studying mining-induced surface and subsurface subsidence. The movements of the observation points installed on the physical model at different mining stages are currently measured using a total station, which is time consuming and inaccurate, especially on small-scale models.

Minnesota is a major mining state. This statement is not a dream or stretch goal but is a fact. As reported in a recent edition of Mining Engineering magazine, Minnesota ranks as the third largest state in terms revenues generated from nonfuels mineral production. The vibrancy of the mining sector in Minnesota can be attributed to several factors. The northeastern corner of the state is home to Minnesota?s iron range, one of North America?s largest deposits of iron ore. Iron ore from Minnesota is a strategic resource that has been [ ] instrumental to the nation?s development ? 90 percent of the iron used to build ships and planes during World War II came from Minnesota. Taconite pellets now produced from openpit mines on the iron range are shipped to steel mills worldwide. The growing appetite for steel in China and India has reignited once moribund mining operations throughout the iron range.

In the late 1980s and into the 1990s, the Mountain Pass Mine in California produced about 40 percent of the world?s rare earth elements. At the height of this production, the facility produced up to 54 L/s (850 gpm) of saltwater that was piped to offshore holding ponds where the water was evaporated. In 1998, following a series of waste water pipeline breaches, separations activities were suspended, reducing the Mountain Pass site to just the openpit mine and mill. The environmental concerns were addressed and the affected areas have since been remediated. However, in the years following the breaches, 97 percent of the world?s production of rare earth elements moved to China. By 2011, Molycorp, and the Mountain Pass Mine, had rebounded from the difficult times and were once again in a position to become a significant player in the rare earth industry.

"The history of the mining industry is littered with in-pit crushing and conveying (IPCC), which should not be confused with the International Protocol for Carbon Capture, projects that failed. The failure is not the technical one of “did it achieve the desired tonnage rate for a longish test period” but, rather, the far more important one of “did it provide return on the investment in the manner that was promised?” While quite a few can claim the former, very few system installations can claim the latter.The reasons for the many failures are numerous, but they are all characterized by a combination of an element of engineering optimism in any, or all of the production rates, the productivity, or the operating and maintenance costs and in predicting the continuity of operating conditions. In these days of big data, propagating such a situation is rapidly becoming unforgivable.In this article, the three most common scenarios put to the corporate board for approval, and the logic as to why they were selected, are examined (with the irony included intentionally).• Fully mobile crusher, fed by a shovel and conveyed out of the pit to a waste dump / process plant.• Semimobile crusher (much more expensive than a fixed crushing station but which apparently allows trucks to short haul inside the pit and improve productivity), which moves when the face moves.• Relocatable crusher (more expensive than a fixed crushing station but which gets relocated at great expense after all the fixed infrastructure impeding relocation is demolished) fed by trucks that don’t leave the pit mostly.This paper will also consider the truth about their operational performance and associate costs."

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is conducting research to develop safe practices for the use of shotcrete as ground support in underground mines, particularly mines operating in weak host rock. As part of this research, a rugged, portable direct tensile test system was developed for measuring shotcrete adhesion strength in underground mines. During the development of this test system, more than 185 direct tensile tests were conducted with a common, commercially available macro-synthetic fiber-reinforced shotcrete that was applied to concrete test panels using a dry mix process and machinery. The average bond strength of the shotcrete to the concrete substrate typically increased as a function of the shotcrete’s curing age, ranging from 0.44 MPa (64 psi) after one day of curing to 1.58 MPa (229 psi) after 90 days of curing. Adhesion strength increased markedly between one and three days of curing, reflecting a similar trend of increasing shotcrete tensile strength with curing time. This robust direct tensile test system can improve mine safety by providing a reliable means of measuring shotcrete adhesion strength and also supplying important information about the quality of the applied shotcrete and the competency of the underlying rock.

Exploration for non-fuel minerals has declined since 1988 as recessionary pressures have slowed growth in the industrialized economies. By most accounts, however, 1990 expenditures were still significantly greater than the low levels experienced in the mid-1980s. The Persian Gulf crisis introduced instability in energy prices and greater uncertainty into an already cloudy economic picture. As 1990 unfolded, the US savings and loan problems spread to the commercial banking system, leading to the failure of several major US commercial banks. The Japanese stock market also suffered significant losses as Japan's Central Bank raised interest rates. The Soviet Union experienced shortages of food and other basic items. Its government faces resistance to changes leading to a market economy. Individual Soviet republics also are seeking more control of their own destiny. The cost of German reunification, in terms of the capital required to bring the east's infrastructure and industrial base to western standards, also appears to have been underestimated.

Good morning ladies and gentlemen. I would like to thank Hans von Michaelis for inviting me here today to talk to you on the subject of "How to Reduce Capital and Operating Costs at Heap Leaching Projects". The comments I have to offer are based on my experiences in gold heap leaching by Newmont Gold Company in Nevada, by Newcrest in Western Australia (formerly Newmont Australia), by Minera Yanacocha in Peru, by Penmont in Mexico, by Z­Mont in Uzbekistan, by the Hochschild Group in Peru and expe­riences in copper heap leaching by Magma Copper Company in Arizona and as a consultant on several other smaller projects worldwide. These comments are a mixture of technology, ideology, philos­ophy, strategy, logic and opinions and might be looked at by many of you as "one man's view". I like to look at them as "a view from the bridge". Let me add that it doesn't bother me that you may not agree with my comments and that I would be interested in your comments or criticisms at the end of this presentation. I don't intend to discuss the details of the mineralogical and metallurgical test work. I will assume, for this talk, that the test work has been conducted very carefully and that the ore in ques­tion has been determined to be heap or dump leachable. Let's begin with a couple of don'ts! ! First, "don't build the mill until you have a mine". This might sound to many of you as fundamental but believe me it continues to happen. The minable reserves should be well known and established as being economical to mine and leach. NPVs, ROis and IRRs are fine if you can be sure of the gold price you use in your calculations. The best method is to carefully estimate the capital cost and, most importantly, the operating cost per ounce of gold recovered which should include the repayment of the borrowed capital and the interest thereon. For example, if the operating cost under these conditions is $200 per ounce, you have a project. If it is $400 per ounce, walk away f om it. Incidentally, the same prin­ciple can be applied to projects involving other metals such as silver, copper, lead, zinc, etc. The second don't is - "don't be sheep". Don't climb on the bandwagon with respect to design and operation because every­one else does it a certain way. Keep an open mind, be versatile, look for change, look for every possible innovation for reducing capital and operating costs. Beware of those who will tell you "we tried that it won't work" or "it's too expensive" or "that's a crazy idea" , <' ''what do you know about mining - you are a metallurgist aren't you" or "what do you know about metallurgy - you are a miner aren't you" or "only geologists can handle this issue". Be careful about pigeon-holing people according to their basic degree and experience. In these days of low metal prices, we need to consider everybody's ideas, as crazy as some of them might seem.

Hanna has developed three production planning systems to help the mine engineers determine the sequence of mining from available ore supples. The Production Scheduling System was developed to give the staff a tool for long range planning by sequencing the removal of blocks from an open pit property. It was needed to determine the year of removal for each block so that the optimum present-valued pit limits could be established by our pit design program. Since in this type of planning short term grade control is less of a factor than it is in daily or monthly planning, the system gives the program greater control and more latitude in block selection. It permits only full blocks to be taken.

As the search for minerals leads to deeper mines the need to control water inflow into mine shafts and mine workings will grow. As shal¬lower more readily available minerals are exploited, ore bodies which were previously uneconomic be cause of their depth will now become attractive targets. In known mining districts new ore bodies are being discovered down dip of existing ones. In the west many metal deposits are being developed in rocks of the mountain front pediments, frequently covered by several hundred feet of saturated alluvium. Greater depth often means that workings are developed well below existing water tables, creating high hydrostatic heads adjacent to mine workings. The purpose of this paper is to review some of the methods available for determining if water control will be necessary and to present some of the techniques for locating water bearing zones and the amount of water to be expected. The paper will concentrate on problems associated with water control in mine shaft development, although many of the exploratory techniques are similar to those needed for assessing overall mine water inflow problems. A brief case history on water control problems in mine shafts in the Grants mineral belt of northwestern New Mexico is presented. Water control during shaft sinking presents some unique features. First, the problem is a relatively short term one, since water control is often necessary only while the shaft is being sunk. Control measures may be necessary only while the shaft is open into the water bearing zone and the lining installed and cemented. Secondly, limited working space within the shaft area presents difficulties in handling large amounts of water inflow. The presence of water in the shaft working area increases sinking time and the potential hazard to miners. Finally, there is the economics of shaft sinking. While the shaft is being sunk no ore is being produced and there is every incentive to minimize costs.

English China Clays, the world&apos;s largest producer of China Clay, has its main production capacity in the South-West of England, where a complex of pits, refining plants, dryers and ports covers an area of approximately 100 square kilometres. The possibility of a computerised information network was first considered in 1980. The system was required to provide information at the central level and also at local plant level to improve co-ordination and control. Immediate access by any authorised user, and flexibility of interrogation were important aims. A small micro-based prototype system was implemented in 1981, and later that year development of the mainframe system commenced. This latter system will provide at least one terminal in every works location and will allow inter-communication of laboratory test data as well as detailed stock levels and production data. An integrated system for order processing will allow stock levels to be monitored in relation to anticipated requirements. The system has been developed by the Data Processing Department using the IDMS database package running on an ICL ME29 mainframe. It was decided to use microcomputers as terminals, which although more complicated because of protocol emulation allows stand-alone applications to be run on the same equipment. Those applications concerning Production Planning are outlined in the paper. Communication on the network is by synchronous transmission over dedicated lines. All data is stored on the central database with terminals accessing it in a star configuration. The system is currently partially implemented with 30 available screens at 18 separate worksites.

"In coal mines, handheld air, electric and hydraulic powered drills are used along belt conveyors, in single entry development, in entries where there are obstructions, and in longwall recovering bolting. In hard rock mines, pneumatically powered jackleg drills are typically used in narrow vein mining. Drilling and bolting in narrow confines has traditionally been performed with pneumatically or hydraulically powered hand-held drills or newer electrically powered hand- held hammer drills due to their low cost, simplicity of operation, and extreme flexibility due to their small size. Mechanized equipment has typically been too large, too expensive, inefficient due to the confined space, and too restrictive due to lack of flexibility for use in narrow confines.Although the handheld equipment is effective, it requires operator exposure to certain inherent hazardous conditions in use. These include falling rock from the roof, rib and face; tripping hazards; bending twisting lifting hazards; high noise levels and chemical fumes from the pneumatic exhaust. The operation of the hand held equipment can adversely affect the long-term health of the operator - continual jackleg operation frequently results in longterm damage to hearing, shoulders, arms and wrist joints and back injuries. This results in a reduction in life style for the operator and higher personnel turnover rates for the mining company.Hand-held drills also typically have limited thrust and torque capability that limits their ability to push long resin bolts, inadequate torque to properly install resin bolts or to properly torque mechanical or tensioned rebar bolts. Hand-held drills do not offer any type of protection for the operator from roof or rib falls. They do not offer any means for handling roof or rib mesh. Since the operator stands on the ground the maximum safe drilling height without use of a ladder or "riding the drill" is limited to 2.44 m (8 ft)."

In the context of this session on "Practical Placer Mining," a projection of the present into the future first assumes that there is a future for Placers. The second assumption is that there is the combination of adequate reserves and a willing, mining investment source to finance placers. This paper will point out the opportunities on both assumptions, illustrating my positive position on the future of gold placers. In order to focus this paper more effectively, I have chosen GOLD as the subject mineral. However, it is recognized that much of the technology for exploring and mining gold placers has been applied to other alluvial deposits; including platinum, diamond, tin, and various industrial minerals (which are often referred to as "placers" though this contradicts historical definitions). Over the past 10 years I have presented several papers on the general subject of placers, most of which are listed under References. These have included topics such as exploration, evaluation, small-scale gold placer mining and decision-making, mining and processing equipment designs, and dredge-mining operations. In an attempt to identify the more promising, undeveloped placer potentials in the world I have usually mentioned the USSR and China but qualified them as being either inaccessible, or, politically difficult to obtain. However, with recent developments in the USSR, the obstacles appear to be somewhat diminished.

The purpose of this paper is to relate progress in the engineering field called Minerals Beneficiation to undergraduate and graduate education in our colleges and universities. So mach has been written recently about the education of scientists and engineers that I&apos;ve had to struggle against the temptation to repeat what has been often said before, particularly because man like Robert Mehl of Carnegie Tech, Antoine Gaudin of MIT, H. M. Davis of Penn State, and John Vanderwilt of Colorado School of Mines have recently written many quotable paragraphs on the subject. In the matter of progress, the rapidity of proliferation in the area of physical and chemical beneficiation is convincing proof that this is indeed a lively art, and having been a millman for 35 uninterrupted years I prefer to lean on personal observations to some extent, rather than on statistics and charts v culled from the journals. I propose in this paper to talk first about the progress we&apos;ve made in our branch of the mining industry in the last 3 decades--particularly in the last few years--and try to show that future progress will depend upon the quality of education and capacity for research possessed by our colleges. The second part will deal with some of the problems the colleges encounter in trying to fulfill these responsibilities.
