The current phase of office development at Canary Wharf in the London Docklands includes twelve multi-storey buildings varying from eighteen to forty stories in height. The area of Canary Wharf South comprises five multi-storey buildings with low level in fill podium and garden areas. Three of these multi-storey buildings have "pile-cap" designs where the entire building load is applied to the piles. The remaining two buildings have "piled-raft" designs where allowance is made in the design for part of the building load to be transferred to the raft formation. Using a piled-raft design approach has enabled savings to be made on the number of piles used below the raft. This paper describes the calibration analysis undertaken to validate the design method. The ground conditions at the Canary Wharf site are typically fill and recent gravel deposits over the overconsolidated clay and sand of the Lambeth Group. Below these strata is the Thanet Sand. The Lambeth Group provided the founding layer for the raft and contributed to the pile shaft resistance. The Thanet Sand stratum provided the bearing layer for the 1.5m diameter base grouted bored piles. The piled-raft design required an assessment of the building load transfer through the raft to the formation layer. This load transfer led to significant increases in effective stress in the soil below the raft and thence a corresponding increased the capacity of the piles. This interaction of the raft with the prepared formation contributed to between 27% and 45% increase in total vertical load carrying capacity of the piled-raft substructure compared with the pile-cap design method. The development of the piled-raft design was carried out in three main phases: ? Development of the approach and validation analyses. ? Design work on various schemes resulting in detailed design packages. ? Validation analyses using full 3D finite element analysis (presented herein). The validation of the piled-raft design approach was initially carried out against published case histories for piled-raft interaction. To improve on the validation work a full 3D finite element analysis of a simplified pile raft and superstructure (which contributes stiffness to the raft) was undertaken; the analysis included only a quarter of the structure due to assumed symmetry of the structure and vertical loading. This 3D validation analysis is presented herein. The analysis was carried out using the Oasys LS-DYNA finite element program. Prior to carrying out the analysis of the piled-raft an initial finite element analysis was carried out to back analyse a fully instrumented field pile test providing accurate modelling of a single pile performance. This back analysis allowed confidence in the soil parameters used in the 3D model; comparisons of shaft and base resistances between the pile test and the FE model calculations for the single pile are presented. The parameters provided in this work were then carried into the full 3D model of the piled-raft. The 3D model of the piled-raft structure included 18 piles (12 full piles and 6 half piles on an axis of symmetry of the model).

Using batch reactors equipped with CO and CO2 gas sensor, CO oxidation over Au catalysts in room air has been investigated and compared with Pt catalysts. For both Au and Pt catalysts, the logarithm plot of CO concentration data during initial 10 min are well fitted by straight line, which mean the first order dependence on the CO concentration between 10 and 10,000ppm. The rate constant value (k) over Au and Pt catalyst generally decrease with increasing initial CO concentration above 100ppm. The value decrease especially rapidly between 100ppm and 1,000ppm over Pt catalysts, which should be due to the strong adsorption of CO on Pt. The k value over Au catalyst has become ten times or more as large as the Pt catalysts at 1,000ppm. Already for the initial concentration of 100ppm CO, the strongly adsorbed CO on Pt metal has been clearly observed by FT-IR during the reaction over Pt/Al2O3. A part of the strongly adsorbed CO has been remained on Pt after the disappearance of gas phase CO, and has gradually changed to gas phase CO2. Such strongly adsorbed species on Au has never been observed on Au/TiO2 under the same reaction conditions. These features of Au catalysts are favorable for indoor air purification.

Workers in underground stone mines have a high fatality rate caused by falls of ground from the mine roof or rib. NIOSH recommendations to reduce ground fall injuries and deaths address baskets, mechanical scalers, mechanical bolters, drill steel changing, personal protective equipment, and training. Description of Exposure An informal National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) review in 1998 identified approximately 17 new underground limestone operations in vari¬ous stages of planning; as many as 35 new underground stone mines are expected by 2005. Many of these new underground stone mines will employ new or inexperienced workers with minimal knowledge of the hazardous conditions that exist underground. Workers in underground stone mines have a fatality rate nearly 20 times that of workers in the manufacturing sector. Three quarters of the fatalities in underground stone mines are caused by falls of ground from the mine roof or rib (Figure 1) [Statistical Abstract of the United States 1985-1999; MSHA 1983-1999]. During 1983-1999, nonfatal ground falls resulted in 140 injuries, or 15% of all underground, lost time stone mine injuries. These nonfatal ground fall injuries resulted in more than 13,800 lost workdays (one third of all lost workdays). Ground falls generate more disabling injuries and time away from work than any other type of incident. [ ]

Industries in the Kwinana area have embarked on a journey of improving the eco-efficiency of Western AustraliaÆs primary heavy industry area. The Kwinana Industrial Area has some unique characteristics that provide both opportunities and barriers. The Kwinana Industries Council and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry are working with the industries to identify a range of projects that can deliver improvements for both environmental and economic æbottom linesÆ, and to progress these projects using internal and external resources. The evolution of the process, its relationship to the ethos of operating companies, and the availability of resources to pursue projects, is an interesting study with lessons for others interested in taking the same course.

"The objective of this study was to demonstrate the application of Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) to the continuous analysis of online monitoring of Al, Mg, Ni, Mn, Si and Fe in nickel ore limonite and saprolite slurry samples. Analysis was performed on slurry samples in air at atmospheric pressure. Two pure samples of limonite and saprolite were used. Mixtures of the two samples in varying proportions were used to build calibration curves, study the influence of solid/liquid ratio, and evaluate short and long term reproducibility. The LIBS measurement of these elements is independent of the water content (from 70-85%, the range allowed by our setup). Repeatability of the measurement and long term reproducibility (from day-to-day) were below 1.2 % and 2% respectively for all the elements studied in our conditions. The results obtained showed that an industrial LIBS analyzer could provide the chemical composition of the six elements Al, Mg, Ni, Mn, Si and Fe within 1-2 minutes.IntroductionThe metal-producing industry faces the major challenge of increasing productivity, reducing costs, and maximizing benefits from existing equipment. By pyrometallurgy, metal making involves the basic steps of charging the furnace, melting the charge and refining. By hydrometallurgy, the metal refining is carried out through the dissolution of the metal by chemical reaction and electrolysis. During refining either by pyrometallurgy or hydrometallurgy, it is critical that operating parameters be adjusted and controlled so that the chemistry of the melt or the solution is within predetermined limits. Presently, the complete turnaround time for sampling, sample transfer, analysis and communication of the results to the operators is often 30 minutes or more."

Self-cleaning fluidised bed heat exchangers have demonstrated unparalleled performance internationally for the implementation of indirect heat transfer in severely fouling fluid environments. Recent advances in equipment design have increased the scope of application to include indirect heat transfer in slurry environments, including fouling, scaling and viscous slurries. The ingenious configuration of recirculated cleaning particles through the tubes of vertical shell and tube heat exchangers provides the ability to solve heat transfer problems that arise as a consequence of tube-side fouling during indirect heat transfer to process fluids or slurries. In most cases, the cleaning particles consist of chopped metal wire, however other process-specific materials may be used.

Probability function integration method is one of the influence function method. It is a widely accepted method in many mining districts in China and Poland mainly because its theory and formulae can well-represent the surface subsidence basins due to longwall mining of flat or near-flat seams. This paper introduces the basic theory of the probability function integration method and determines its 4 basic parameters by analyzing the measured subsidence profiles in eight longwall panels in Northern Appalachian Coal field. It also discusses the two methods for determining the 4 parameters. Finally the acquired parameters are used to predict the subsidence and deformation of the houses for damage assessment. Comparisons are made between the measured and the predicted subsidence. Probability Function Integration Method The probability function integration method for predicting surface movements and deformations is widely used in China and Poland. The governing equation of the method contains five parameters: subsidence factor, a, offset of inflection point, d, tangent of the major influence angle, tan fl, horizontal movement constant, b, and major dispersion angle e (e = 90. for flat seams). Its applicable range iis much larger including seams less than 30' from the horizontal, critical and noncritical mining and soft to hard overburden.

With some notable exceptions, marine placers located just below, or just above, present sea level, are responsible for much of today's production of detrital ilmenite, rutile, zircon, and other minerals of value. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the paleogeographic and paleo-oceanographic factors which may have determined the location of presently submerged marine placers. These factors include changes in sea level, burial by recent marine sediments, stream capture and other changes in drainage patterns, and recent changes in climate. Selected geologic situations in the Yellow Sea off the coast of Korea, in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Portugal, in the Bering Sea off the coast of Alaska, and in the Arabian Sea off the coast of India, will be used to illustrate the author's point of view.

"Due to depletion of the existing ore deposits the content of non-ferrous metals in produced ores has an inevitable tendency to decrease. Processing of low-grade ores is associated with production of low-grade selective concentrates and poses serious problems for the non-ferrous industry relating to increasing losses and expenses for waste treatment and disposal.The main component contaminating selective concentrates is iron sulphides.Copper-nickel, copper-zinc and polymetallic ores have been discussed as most important types of ores requiring removal of iron sulphides.One of the promising directions for development of selective flotation technology is the use of lowmolecular organic depressors. An advantage of organic compounds is in the possibility of multi-variant structure of organic molecules, which permits selection of a most efficient reagent for the given conditions. Another way for improving the grades of concentrates is concentration of valuable constituents associated with iron sulphides in an intermediate product and upgrading of the latter by chemical and metallurgical techniques.In order to remove iron from nickel concentrates, specific process conditions have been developed for selective flotation of pentlandite with the use of an organic depressor for pyrrhotite. The use of a depressor for flotation of high-grade copper-nickel ores ensures an increase in the nickel content up to 14% in the nickel concentrate produced as compared with 7% when using conventional process conditions, along with a nickel recovery improved by 2-3%."

"The most economical way of dewatering mineral concentrates is to reduce the moisture content in the material mechanically using thickeners and filtration avoiding thermal drying whenever possible. In addition to this, the dewatering process should produce low moisture cake, high quality liquid, consume little energy. As a part of the dewatering process The CERAMEC® capillary filter has been proven to meet these requirements in over 150 installations. The filtration is done by using ceramic filter plates with small pore size. The capillary action in the filter medium secures gas free filtration at good vacuum, and due to the small pore size, filtrate is crystal clean and particle free. The energy consumption is minimal. This paper will discuss results from filters installed at Pyhäsalmi Mine Oy in Finland where the technology was has been used since the late eighties. Results from more recent installations like Los Pelambres in Chile and LKAB in Sweden will also be discussed.INTRODUCTIONThe idea of using capillary action to make dewatering more efficient was invented two decades ago. Ten years later whole filter plants utilizing the new method were delivered to mine concentrators for dewatering of mineral concentrates. Further development of ceramic membrane plates made it possible to meet the requirements in iron ore dewatering. The Stawell Goldfield, the westernmost of the main Victorian fields, has produced over a million and a quarter ounces of gold from one and three-quarter million tons of ore. The lodes are quartz reefs and sulphide bodies occurring in sediments of lower Ordovician or upper Cambrian age. The lodes are confined to a relatively narrow suite of weak rocks lying between stronger ones above and below and there is a definite relationship between fold structure, pitch and strength of folding and ore.LOCATION HISTORY AND PAST PRODUCTIONThe town of Stawell, situated 150 miles north-westerly from Melbourne on the main railway and road to Adelaide, is the most westerly of the main gold areas of Victoria. Alluvial gold was found at Pleasant Creek (now Stawell West) in 1853 and the usual "rush" followed. Numerous alluvial leads, some surface, others buried under up to 100 ft. of Tertiary sediments were worked. The alluvial gold was soon exhausted, but in 1857 gold-bearing reefs were found on the slopes of a prominent ridge on the northern edgeof the present town. Early reef mining was by small working parties mining to shallow depths only and treating their ore at public crushing plants. Some of the early returns were very high grade. The next stage was the amalgamation of claims and the formation of companies, with their own treatment plants. This stage continued till the last mine closed in 1921. Introduction In the design and operation of gravity concentration circuits, the application of process models for spiral concentrators offers significant benefits. A substantial amount of work has been produced over the last 30 years in the field of modeling the metallurgical performance of spiral concentrators. It is not the aim of this contribution to add to the refinement of modeling technique but to share some of the experiences and potential improvements which can be achieved in a relatively simple way. The design of spiral circuits usually requires extensive testing. This is often conducted in batch operation only, either due to lack of suitable continuous testing facilities, the unavailability of sufficient quantities of sample, or other constraints. Typical problems arising during circuit development from batch testwork are the extrapolation of results to different feed conditions, and resolving of internal recycles. Model selection and development The classic approaches in spiral modeling technique range from fundamental fluid dynamics, based on the Navier-Stokes equations in combination with expressions for local slurry properties, to fully empirical and statistical models. With the initial objective of developing an in-house tool for gravity circuit optimization and development, mathematical model types from each category, available either commercially or in the published literature, were evaluated. Model selection For the desired purpose, an approach proposed by Holland-Batt (1990) was found suitable, which was adopted and modified. Holland-Batt reported that the shape of release curves in spiral applications could be described by a combination of a linear function in the initial recovery zone, and a power law function outside this zone. "Kinross Gold Corporation’s Mantos de Oro (MDO) gold/silver mine in northern Chile currently processes 15,000 tpd of oxide ores through a mill, whole ore cyanide leach plant followed by a Merrill-Crowe refinery. With the expected depletion of these oxide ores in a few years a new sulphide mineral deposit, Ladera-Farellón has been identified to potentially replace existing ore reserves. The deposit contains approximately 0.5g/t Au, 6g/t Ag and 0.5% Cu. The principal sulphide mineral in the deposit is enargite (Cu3AsS4) which hosts the majority of gold and silver and the copper. Direct cyanidation testwork has shown the sulphide mineral is refractory with a low gold recovery of 36% and silver recovery of 45%. Oxidation of the sulphides is required to liberate gold and silver and allow recovery of copper as an important pay-metal. Therefore, at MDO a new metallurgical process route with oxidation as a pretreatment step is required for viable treatment of such new sulphide mineralized material with acceptable recoveries of pay-metals.Analysis of flowsheet options was completed based on bench-scale and pilot scale metallurgical testwork as well as with reference to existing studies and operations. The process options investigated assume concentration of sulphides by flotation, followed by either pressure oxidation, bacteriological oxidation or roasting. Preliminary evaluation of flowsheet options focused on process risk, operability, technology availability and the economics of the project with emphasis on use of the existing metallurgical plant to reduce capital cost. Operating costs for each process option were also included in the relative analysis.The challenges of treatment of MDO sulphides, principally enargite and pyrite for recovery of gold, silver and copper center on fixation of arsenic and sulphur capture with environmentally acceptable disposal of residue tailings. This environmental focus was included in the process option selection and comparative analysis.This paper presents a review of the process options considered and highlights comparative advantages/disadvantages of each process with associated environmental issues. Preliminary conclusions are drawn on roasting as a potentially favorable process option for the treatment of MDO sulphides."

Volume I This report presents the first national survey of miners' attitudes and opinions about their-work. The goal is to present attitudinal data that bears on coal production. Interviews were conducted in 26 mines with 2,000 miners. High levels of cooperation were exhibited by management, union and the employees. Data are presented about miners' attitudes about general aspects of their work such as pay, supervision, their jobs, etc. Another section of this report reviews opinions about specific aspects of work performance. Recommendations are presented.

A study was conducted to determine the structure and lifting capacity of a two-phase stream in a vertical pipe at different distances from the point of introduction of the material into the instrument. Stream velocity was set at 2.8, 4.0, 4.8, 5.6 and 6.25 m/sec to ensure separation regimes. It was found that the llifting capacity of the two-phase stream exceeded that of pure air by a factor of three or more, and that in a turbulent regime the velocity curve displayed marked deformation, becoming more rounded and tending towards a parabola. Blasting is the most important activity in the mining industry, the world over. It is a well known fact that only part of the explosive energy gets utilized in causing the actual rock fragmentation. The rest of it gets converted into blast-induced ground vibrations and noise. Though blast vibrations cannot be totally eliminated, it is possible to minimize them by optimization of blast parameters. This paper highlights various in-house efforts put forth by the author towards site specific blast optimization and the monitoring of blast vibrations. It also deals with the prediction curves developed by regular regression analysis for the prediction of ‘blast vibrations’, ‘peak particle velocity’, ‘safe charge’ for various blasts.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health conducted laboratory and field tests to evaluate the effectiveness of dust collector bags for reducing dust liberation and operator exposure from a roof bolter?s dust collection system. The laboratory tests evaluated the bag?s effectiveness to contain dust and the effect on canister filter loading in both a bag and bagless condition. The dust emissions from the collector?s exhaust were also measured in each condition during laboratory testing. Laboratory results show that nearly 100 percent of the test dust fed into the collector was captured by the dust bags. Loading and pressure drop on the dust collector?s canister filter is greatly decreased when using the bags, enabling longer periods of drilling without filter removal/cleaning. The field results showed that, even though dust standards were met, respirable dust in exhausted emissions was reduced around the bolter. Laboratory and field results show that benefits from use of the bags are realized in all areas of operator exposure.

The Maragorik Prospect represents a partially eroded Pliocene acid sulphate style epithermal gold system hosted within the Sigule Volcanics and Riet Bed sediments which is inferred to have formed from a degassing porphyry body at depth. A regional sinistral rotation provided by transform faults associated with the opening of the Manus Basin imparts a dilational character to mineralised NE trending faults formed parallel to the Warangoi Graben. A controlled-source audio magneto-tellurics (CSAMT) survey has identified E-W trending buried conductors which may represent alteration formed within dilation zones. While some gold mineralisation occurs within vuggy silica at Palang Hill, the target is auriferous enargite (luzonite)-bearing breccias from the LK1 and Gureki areas.

As part of the Bureau of Mines program to reduce U.S. reliance on foreign suppliers of strategic and critical metals, research was conducted to improve technology for the recovery of critical metals from hardface alloy grinding waste, a form of superalloy scrap. This report describes a hydrometallurgical process that demonstrated on a laboratory scale that 79 pct of the chromium, 97 pct of the cobalt, 99 pct of the manganese, 99 pct of the nickel, and 90 pct of the tungsten could be recovered in chemical form from hardface alloy grinding waste. The process involved deoiling the grinding waste, followed by chloride-based dissolution of the deoiled material. A high-grade calcium tungstate (CaW04) product was recovered from the resultant leach residue by caustic leaching and precipitation. Iron, cobalt, man-ganese, and nickel chlorides were sequentially recovered from the leach liquor by solvent extraction. Amine extractants were used to extract the iron, cobalt, and manganese; decanal oxime was used to extract the nickel. Market-grade cobalt chloride (CoCI2), manganese chloride (MnC12), and nickel chloride (NiCl2) products could be produced directly from the resultant strip liquors. The final raffrnate was a relatively pure chromic chloride (CrCI3) solution that compared favorably with commercial solutions.

No one process, product or effect of the minerals sector can be viewed in isolation when addressing sustainable development. Meaningful assessments of the minerals sector require that its processes and production are drawn together in a generic framework that gives a holistic view of its performance and progress. Lifecycle Assessment is increasingly accepted as an appropriate means of constructing such a framework. It is a step beyond using the simplistic concept of the triple bottom line of social, environmental and economic performance to drive and communicate sustainable development. However, fundamental questions need to be raised about the scope and purpose of lifecycle assessment, such as what effects and performances should be assessed, for whom should they be assessed, and what performance indicators should be used and how should they be selected. The principles of eco-efficiency, industrial ecology, The Natural Step (TNS) and other pertinent philosophies and initiatives driving mineral sector sustainable development are outlined to support a lifecycle stewardship vision for the minerals sector. Articulating this vision through a holistic lifecycle indicator system showing inputs and outputs, natural partnerships, effects on community, environment and economy facilitates recognition of problems, opportunities and partnerships that can be usefully pursued.
