No one mill attribute it to the partiality of friendship if I claim for Thomas Sterry Hunt the right to a place among that little band of men whom nature has endowed with what seems an almost magical power of insight into her mysteries. But those of us who knew him well, while me never ceased to wonder at the breadth of his genius, the fertility of his imagination, and the wonderful capacity of his memory, learned that these native powers would have availed little to win him his rank in science, had they not been stimulated by ceaseless mental activity, indomitable perseverance, and unflagging industry. Thomas Sterry Hunt was born in Norwich, Connecticut, on September 5, 1826. He came on his mother's side from that good old stock which gave to Puritan England the gentle mystic Peter Sterry and that uncompromising preacher Thomas Sterry, who wrote the notable tract, " The Rot among the Bishops " in 1667, and that gave to New England Consider and John Sterry, the mathematicians. While lie was a child the family moved to Poughkeepsie on the Hudson. There the father died when Thomas, the oldest son, was twelve. The mother and her family of six young children returned to the old home in Connecticut. For a short time Thomas attended the public school; but it was for a short time only, as he, thus early, was required to share the burden of the family support and to seek employment. This he found first in a printing-office, then with an apothecary, afterwards in a book-store. The surroundings may have been congenial, but the occupation probably was not; for he re-

THE first practical treatment of wood to prevent decay was devised early in the 19th century. At that time the oaken navy of England, when the nation was fighting for its very existence, seemed doomed to annihilation by the swift ravages of decay. The acute situation inspired a desperate search for preventive measures and resulted in the development of the Burnett, Bethel and Kyan processes for impregnating wood with zinc chloride, coal-tar creosote and mercuric chloride, respectively. In the century that has elapsed, their use has spread throughout the world and the three original preservatives are used today in enormous quantities. Meanwhile, improved processes have been developed, new preservatives discovered, and the practice of impregnating wood to make it last longer has attained a position of major importance in the field of structural materials. USE OF PRESERVATIVES BY THE RAILROADS In the application of wood preservatives in the United States the railroads have been the leaders for the past 50 years or more. Having found that decay is the chief cause of the early destruction of wood and that preservative treatment is the remedy, they have treated their ties and timber in increasing amounts(1)?-in 1925 about 220;000,000 cubic feet. By preservative treatment the Santa Fe Railroad saves annually 1,500,000 ties in its 18,000 miles of track, and many other railroads effect similar savings. (2) In like manner the life of wooden bridges and trestles,(3) poles, marine piling, water tanks and other wooden railroad structures has been greatly increased, reducing the amount of timber required annually to maintain them.(5),(7)

Towle (co-author, Uranium Deposits of the Grants District, New Mexico, P. 1037) graduated from the Colorado School of Mines with a degree in Geological Engineering. He was a member of Sigma Nu; Theta Tau, an honorary professional society; Blue Key, honorary social society; the glee club and quartet, and a member of the student council. He has been a mucker, driller, flotation operator and mill shift boss for the Clear Creek-Gilpin Co., Idaho Springs, Colo.; Geologist, chief engineer, and chief geologist for Patino Mines & Enterprises Consolidated, Inc., Bolivia; appraisal engineer and part-time geology student, Denver; office geologist for Geology Dept., special Engineering div., Sea Level Canal Studies, Panama Canal; and geologist, div. of Raw Materials, USAEC, Grand Junction, Colo. The following notes are contributed, not with the idea of offering a complete history of the development of this very important process as applied to the Leadville district, but with the hope that the practice, as it was carried out in the Bi-Metallic Smelter, may still be of interest to others. The Bi-Metallic Smelter, at Leadville, Colo., was the first to make a commercial success of the process described in the following pages, which consisted essentially of smelting raw silver- and copper-bearing sulphide ores in blast-furnaces to form a matte, which was generally re-smelted with siliceous ores for a second high-grade matte. Robert Sticht, in his excellent monograph on the subject,' has outlined briefly the plant belonging to this company. He says, in effect: The Boulder, Mont., enterprise set the example for others with whom the patentee (W. L. Austin) had been negotiating, and the old La Plata lead-smelter at Leadville, Colo., was fashioned into a crude, temporary experimental plant for the Bi-Metallic Company, and the feasibility of the process demonstrated by a trial run. Subsequently, the plant was considerably improved, and, being supplied with very favorable ores, continued to run without interruption from August, 1892, to June, 1893. In September, 1803, smelting was resumed in a completely remodeled establishment, some $200,000 having been expended upon the new work. Thus, aside from the Montana experiments, which, under the direction of W. L. Austin, began as early as 1885 at Toston, and continued with indifferent success for six or seven years, the Bi-Metallic plant at Leadville may be said to have

A THOROUGH knowledge of the behavior of cement slurries under elevated tempera-tures and pressures is necessary in order to solve properly the many problems pre-sented in deep-well cementing operations. In the earlier days of the petroleum indus-try the depths of wells were shallow as compared to those of today, and the subsurface temperatures and pressures were not of sufficient magnitude to affect seriously the problem of proper control of cement-slurry properties. Today, however, the search for new reserves has extended drilling to such depths that bottom-hole temperatures of more than 200°F. and bottom-hole pressures of 3000 to 5000 lb. are not uncommon. Moreover, there is every indication that within the next few years wells will be drilled to even greater depths and bottom-hole temperatures and pressures will be correspondingly higher than those with which we are concerned today. It has been realized for some time that the behavior of cement slurries at high temperatures and pressures might be very different from that at atmospheric tempera-ture-pressure conditions, but while the temperature effects have been investigated with a reasonable degree of thoroughness, the pressure effects have received little public attention. While the trend toward deeper drilling may make changes in cementing technique and the choice of cements imperative, it was the purpose of this investigation to consider factors having a bearing on the latter, only secondary consideration being given, for the present, to details of tech-nique and equipment for oil-field use. More specifically, the purpose of this work was to consider the effect of temperature and pressure upon the behavior of cement slurries.

An expression for the diffusion coefficient of inlerstitial atoms in the bcc lattice is derived which takes account of jumps between tetrahedral and octahedral interstices. The results are applied to the case of carbon diffusion in iron to find values for jump frequencies of the types, octahedral-tetrahedral, tetra-hedral-tetrahedral, and tetrahedral-octahedral. ThERE has been renewed discussion1-5 concerning the mechanism of diffusion of interstitial atoms in the bcc lattice. This lattice has both octahedral and tetrahedral interstices, and it has been pointed out that the interstitial atoms may make jumps of the octahedral-octahedral type, hereafter called o-o, octahedral-tetrahedral, o-t, and tetrahedral-tetrahedral, t-t. Doubt has been cast on the applicability of snoek's8 model for internal friction to some interstitial migrations in bcc lattices wherein he proposed 0-0 jumps as the principal mechanism of migration. Also, the anomalous excess diffusion of carbon in iron at high temperatures4 has been ascribed to t-t jumps,2,3 even though the sites normally occupied are octahedral. In this paper an expression is derived for the diffusion coefficient, taking account of the three types of jump mentioned. The relationship of the coefficient to the corresponding internal friction relaxation time is found for the limiting case corresponding to Snoek's model. These results are applied to the case of carbon in iron. In Fig. 1, the structure is shown with the locations of the interstices. Each o site has four t site neighbors coplanar with it, and each t site lies halfway between two o sites. There are four t site first neighbors of a t site lying at the vertices of a tetrahedron. Let the average fraction of atoms occupying o sites and t sites be No and Nt, respectively. The layer growth method has been used to investigate the reaction kinetics of liquid titanium and hafnium with carbon and the [liq] - [liq + TiC] and [liq] - [liq + HfC] phase boundaries at temperatures above 1800°C. The equipment and experimental procedures used in this investigation are basically identical to those described in an earlier paper' on the Zr-C reaction. Temperature control, however, was improved significantly by connecting a Latronics Colo-Ratio automatic pyrometer and a controller to the power source. The subsequent temperature variations were ±10°C; previously ±20°C was obtained using manual controls. The absolute accuracy of the pyrometer, however, must be considered to be only ±40°C.* The spectrographic analyses of the materials used in this study are listed in Table I. The isothermal reactions of titanium (1800° to 2700°C) and hafnium (2300" to 3000°C) with carbon (graphite crucibles) resulted in the formation of carbon-saturated liquid metal and layers of Tic and HfC, respectively. The thicknesses of the carbide layers, determined from metallographic measurements at 100 times, as a function of carburization time and temperature are given in Figs. 1 and 2. At each temperature, parabolic growth behavior for these reactions was observed and could be expressed as x2 =Kpt, where X is scale thickness (corrected for heating and coolingL), Kp the parabolic growth constant, and t the isothermal carburization time. Values of Kp as a function of temperature for the carbides are shown in Fig. 3 and listed in Table 11. The growth constants are expressible as: kpTiC = 0.2 exp(-61,800/RT) sq cm per sec for Tic and Kp HfC = 2.62 exp(-95,300/RT) sq cm per sec for HfC. The liquidus phase boundaries were determined from metal samples treated in graphite crucibles for different times ranging from 4 to 100 min at each of the temperatures indicated in Table 11. Metallographic examination revealed that the carbide precipitates were distributed uniformly throughout the frozen metal matrices. This is attributed to the rapid cooling rates (800°C per min) and the small difference in density between the precipitated carbide and the liquid metal.

IN the manufacture of telephone apparatus a number of nonferrous sheet metals are blanked and formed to produce a wide variety of parts, which are generally small in size because of space and weight requirements. Many are given sharp bends in forming, so that they may be assembled into compact units. This study covered sheet metal of the alloys of brass, phosphor bronze and nickel silver that are most extensively used by our company. In general, the sheets range from 0.005 to 0.100 in. in thickness and from 1/4 hard to extra spring temper in hardness. As many parts function as flat springs, and others require the maximum stiffness for structural reasons, a large percentage of the metal is used in the hard and spring tempers. So, because of the necessity for the minimum radius of bend consistent with the maximum in hardness, there has been a need for information as to the forming characteristics of these sheet metals in the various alloys, tempers and thicknesses. The literature yields relatively little regarding such forming characteristics, so that designers of apparatus and tools have been largely dependent upon past experience or tool tryouts for guidance. In presenting tabular data intended as a basis for selecting the temper of the metal and radius of the bend, we recognize the influence of many other factors which are not covered in this study. For example, the angle of the bend and conditions of the metal, such as grain size and presence of impurities, as well as conditions of the fabricating process, such as rate of forming and adjustment of the tools, may all affect the result. In addition, a bumping operation subsequent to forming, which is frequently used to set the bend, increases the strain on the metal. We wish to emphasize the fact that this is not considered a scientific investigation of the formability of materials or an attempt to correlate forming, characteristics with various other properties of the metals, except in so far as such properties are controlled by commercial limits on composition and temper.

VALUES for the equilibrium distribution coefficient, ko, are required for solidification studies. The procedure generally adopted1-3 is to progressively solidify alloy rods over a range of growth rates, under conditions where a high degree of convective mixing is present in the melt. The measured effective distribution coefficients are plotted as a function of growth rate, and the extrapolated value at zero growth rate is taken to be the equilibrium ko. The method is limited by the experimental difficulty in obtaining steady growth rates less than approximately 10-4 cm per sec. Extrapolation from rates greater than this can lead to inaccuracy. In the present investigation, an alternative method for determining ko, previously used by the authors for the Ag-Sn system,' was applied to alloy of thallium in tin. Specimens were grown under conditions where convective mixing was absent, and experimental concentration-distance curves in the region of the initial transient were compared with curves calculated for trial values of ko. The ko which gave the best fit was taken as the correct value. To obtain the calculated curves, a value for the diffusion constant in the liquid near to the melting point was needed. This was determined by the capillary-reservoir method. Diffusion Constants. Details of the experimental procedure used by the authors in the capillary-reservoir technique have been described in previous papers,5'6 the only variation being in the use of Tl204, a ß emitter, as tracer, in contrast to previous work where ? emitters were used. The activity of a ß-emitting sample, as measured in a Geiger counter, is proportional to the surface area. To measure the concentration of thallium along the capillary after diffusion had taken place, the solidified capillary (1 mm diam) was cut into 2.5-mm lengths and each length compressed between parallel steel plates to form a disc approximately 5 mm in diam. The discs were placed in a flat-bottomed dish, covered by a thin lead shield with a central aperture, and counted in a 0 counter with fixed geometry. The unusual physical, electrical and magnetic properties of the iron-nickel alloys has given rise to a voluminous literature. This work will be reviewed critically in "The Alloys of Iron and Nickel," a monograph of the Alloys of Iron Research Series, soon to be published. In what follows we shall therefore confine ourselves to those of the earlier investigations that involved the use of X-ray crystal-structure methods. The earliest X-ray work on the iron-nickel system was by Miss Andrewsl. Using the powder method of X-ray analysis purely as a means of identifying the phases present, she located a region between 20 and 30 weight per cent nickel in which body-centered and face-centered phases coexisted. No lattice constants nor details of heat-treatment were reported. Bain2 also reported some qualitative observations. McKeehan3 made a systematic investigation over the whole of the system, giving many of his alloys four and some five different heat-treatments. In alloys furnace-cooled from 900' to 950' C. he found two coexisting phases between 0.15 and 30 per cent nickel. The precision of the lattice-constant measurements was low in comparison with what can be obtained today. Even for alloys of the same heat-treatment, differences in the constants were often between two and ten parts per thousand. In regions where no change of lattice constant with heat-treatment should occur, differences of the same order of magnitude were found. Since the maximum change in the lattice constant of nickel with change of composition is only about 2 per cent of the constant for pure nickel, these variations in the constants for a given alloy cause the points to "scatter" badly about any curve that may be drawn to represent them and it is difficult to interpret such results. In spite of this, McKeehan shows that the lattice constant of nickel increased as the iron content increased. His results for the alpha-iron phase are less conclusive. PRIoR to 1936, the Ontario Refining Co. received all incoming blister copper from The International Nickel Company's smelter in the usual form of 460-lb. cakes, or slabs. These were received in open cars in lots of 250 pieces. At the refinery the cakes were unloaded onto narrow- • gauge cars, for convenient handling and pickup by charging cranes. In March 1936, an investigation was started on the feasibility of transferring converter copper in the molten state from the smelter to the refinery anode furnaces, a distance of 1 1/4 miles. Although common in steel practice, the transportation of blister copper in this form had not previoisly been attempted and a preliminary study of the various factors involved was therefore necessary. For this purpose, a series of experiments was made in which molten copper, removed at different stages during the furnace cycle, was held in a small portable holding furnace. This vessel was essentially a refractory-lined steel cylinder provided with ports for filling and emptying, heated by an oil burner. Dimensions of the steel shell were 3 ft. 10 in. diameter by 7 ft. 3 in. long, and thickness of refractories depended on the design and combination used for the particular experiment. The vessel was filled with approximately 2 1/2 tons of copper at a predetermined temperature, the lining having been preheated to a definite point by means of an oil burner. All openings were well luted and temperature readings were made every 15 min. by means of an immersion-type thermocouple. In this manner the rate of heat loss resulting with different refractory design could be developed. The ratio of exterior surface to weight of metal was taken into consideration in comparing the experimental results with what might be expected for a full-sized unit, and observations were also made on type and degree of slag accretion. It was not possible to get as much information on this latter point as desirable, but all evidence showed that the problem would be control of slag build-up rather than attack on refractories. In a previous paper1 a method for the measurement of the comparative desulphurizing power of slags was described and data were presented covering the range of likely slags containing up to 10 per cent MgO. In the present work the range is extended to include slags containing up to 20 per cent MgO, and the effect of temperature on 5 per cent and 15 per cent MgO slags over the range 1475' to 1525' C. is included. The method used was that described in the previous paper except that some of the temperature measurements were made with a noble-metal thermocouple instead of a tungsten-graphite thermocouple. Twelve-gram charges of 0.8 per cent sulphur-metal and 5-gram charges of slag were subjected to heating for 30 min. at a prescribed temperature. The charges were analyzed for sulphur content. For purposes of comparison, desulphurizing power is defined as the ratio of the percentage of sulphur found in the slag to that found in the metal. Six slag and metal charges were made coincidentally in 5/8in. holes in a section of an electrode graphite rod. One slag and metal charge was used as a control by means of which adjustment in the desulphurization value could be made for small variations in temperature and other factors. For convenient presentation of the data, the slags are arranged in groups in each of which one of the four main slag components is constant. Thus, the 15 per cent MgO slags are presented separately from those containing 20 per cent MgO. Slags with Magnesium Oxide Constant 15 Per cent Mg0.—The data on slags containing 15 per cent MgO cover a composition range of 24 to 50 per cent SiO2, 5 to 27 per cent A1203 and 24 to 53 per cent CaO. Variation in composition has been in steps of 2 per cent over much of the area. IN spite of considerable study,1-5 the nature of slime coatings in flotation is still not completely understood. However, phenomena that control flocculation and dispersion of colloidal systems are now interpreted in terms of electrical double layers."' Colloids will flocculate even though the particles carry the same charge, but when two dispersed colloids of opposite charge are mixed, flocculation ensues even more rapidly. Analogous phenomena seem responsible for slime coating on minerals in flotation systems. To shed new light on the issue it was considered desirable to devise a tool that would measure slime coatings. The usual method has been to examine photographs of presumably representative surfaces, after an intervening washing in running water. But such an examination is non-quantitative, and the changes in chemical environment represented by the washing may have removed the slime coatings that existed during flotation. To provide the possibility for a correlation with electrical double layer phenomena, the experiments were made with quartz, corundum, and iron oxide, for which electrokinetic data are available.8-12 Since the properties of the electrical double layers of these oxides depend on the pH of the solution, pH will be the most important variable. Furthermore, because the zero point of charge for silica, iron oxide, and alumina occurs at pH 3.7, 8, and 9.5, respectively, the relative charge on the slime and mineral can be changed over wide ranges. Because of its practical importance in quartz flotation, iron oxide powder was chosen as the slime. Also, its uniform composition, contrasting color, and ease of analysis make experimentation simple.

The deformation mechanisms occurring in polycrys-talline, commercially pure titanium and a Ti-8 pct A1 alloy have been investigated and compared to earlier results by Levine on high-purity titanium single crystals and by Conrad on commercially pure titanium. In accord with Levine, two consecutive deformation mechanisms are observed to exist below 500°K with the transition temperature between mechanisms, Tc, strongly dependent upon interstitial composition. T, is found to be 210°. 375° -430°, and 450°K for alloys A large number of investigations have been conducted to determine the rate-controlling mechanisms of plastic deformation occurring in fcc and bcc metals. Very few investigations of a similar nature have been conducted for hexagonal metals. In fact, until very recently, magnesium is the only hexagonal metal which has been systematically investigated for determination of the rate-controlling deformation mechanisms.1"3 From these investigations, it was concluded that basal slip below 420°K occurs by the intersection of forest dislocations,1'3 while for prismatic slip the Peierls mechanism is rate-controlling at low temperatures with interstitial compositions of 0.024, 0.42, 0.61, and 1.13 at. pct expressed in terns of oxygen equivalents. The low-temperature mechanism is found to be an impurity obstacle mechanism in contrast to Levine's earlier conclusion of the Peierls barrier. Measurement of the activation parameters for deformation and estimation of the force-distance profile of the obstacles show their retarding force to be effective over longer distances from the obstacle as the interstitial composition increases. and thermally activated cross slip at higher temperatures. 2 The potential technological importance of titanium alloys has prompted recent studies of the deformation and fracture characteristics of titanium and its alloys. 4-8 Levine' systematically investigated the low-temperature deformation behavior of high purity titanium single crystals oriented for either basal or prismatic slip. It was concluded that the Peierls mechanism was rate-controlling at temperatures below 210°K, while above this temperature an undefined mechanism was rate-controlling. Conrad 7,8 concluded from an analysis of the composition dependence of the critical shear stress at 0°K and measurement of the activation parameters that the low-temperature deformation of titanium is controlled by an impurity

Money is like an arm or leg-use it or lose it." -Henry Ford INTRODUCTION If it were not for the existence of interest, the analysis of investment opportunities would be greatly simplified. In the absence of interest, investors would be indifferent as to when cash outlays are made or cash benefits are received. It would, in fact, be irrelevant whether the outlays preceded or followed inflows as long as both amounts are known with certainty. Of course, it does make a considerable difference whether, for example, a firm receives $1 million now or five years from now. The reason is that money does, indeed, have a value which is a function of time. Interest is how this time value is measured. Interest is generally defined as money paid for the use of borrowed money. In other words, interest is the rental charge for using an asset over some specific time period. The rate of interest is the ratio of the interest chargeable at the end of a specific period of time to the money owed, or borrowed, at the beginning of that period. In order to understand why interest exists, it is necessary to take the lender's viewpoint. The lender can justify charging interest for several reasons: 1) Risk: The lender is faced with the possibility that the borrower will be unable to repay the loan. 2) Inflation: Money repaid in the future will be in units of lower value due to inflation. 3) Transactions Cost: There will be expense incurred in preparing the loan agreement, recording payments, collecting the loan, and other administrative tasks. 4) Opportunity Cost: By committing limited funds to one borrower, a lender is unable to take advantage of other available opportunities. 5) Postponement of Pleasure: By lending money, an individual (or organization) is postponing the pleasure which that money could purchase. Each of these is a valid reason for a lender demanding interest from a borrower. The level of interest is, like the price of other assets, determined by supply and demand. Nonetheless, from time to time various analysts have taken a then current average interest rate and broken it down into the components described previously.

THE development of the linear hot-wire anemometer has been chiefly clue to the efforts of L. V. Kings1 and A. E. Kennelly and H. S. Sanborn.2 The anemometers used by these investigators consisted essentially of a fine heating wire having attached leads for resistance measurements at distances of 10 or more centimeters from each other. In using such an anemometer, the current is measured that is necessary to maintain the resistance of the wire, between the two leads, constant for different air velocities. Thus resistance is always so chosen that the temperature of the heating wire will be sufficiently high to make the observations practically independent of small variations in the temperature of the gas in which the anemometer is placed. The measurement of the resistance of the anemometer wire requires a Kelvin bridge set up, which for commercial work is not altogether desirable. The cooling effect clue to different air velocities depends on the temperature difference between the wire and the gas and the total quantity or mass of gas passing the wire per unit tine. Since the temperature of the wire is maintained constant, the effect observed in the change in the heating currentfor a given change in air velocity is a measure of the difference between the gas flow in the two cases. Such an anemometer, therefore, measures the average gas flow for a length depending on the distance between the two resistance leads. Therefore the instrument in the form used thus far is not very satisfactory for measuring gas velocities in small tubes or in places where the velocity varies rapidly across the line of flow. For the purpose of measuring gas flow through relatively small tubes, where the velocity changes rather rapidly across the tube, the hot-wire anemometer has been modified in the manner shown diagrammatically in Fig. 1. It consists essentially of a platinum heating wire H about 0.007 in. (0.178 mm.) in diameter and ½ to 1 in. (12.7 to 25.4 mm.) long stretched across a suitable framework, say of glass. This wire has

SATISFACTORY metallographic sample preparation of very soft metals, such as lead and its alloys is generally difficult. The prime requisite of any technique must be that the result gives an undis-torted microstructure for the microscopist to examine. A small amount of mechanical polishing followed by a chemical or electrolytic polish is usually the most desirable way to obtain an undis-torted surface. Several chemical-4 and electrolytic3-' polishing solutions have been developed for dilute lead alloys. Perchloric acid mixtures (with acetic anhydride, ethyl alcohol, or water) are among the most prominent electropolishing solutions used for lead; however, the presence of bismuth in the alloy precludes the use of any perchloric-containing solution. The other solutions1-7 were found to be unsatisfactory on alloys ranging from 10 to 65 wt pct Bi in lead. With increasing bismuth content, the microstructure shows a lead (terminal solid solution), 0-6 mixture, E (peri-tectically formed hexagonal phase), and E bismuth mixture (eutectic at 56.7 wt pct Bi).9 The metallographic samples were mounted in "Araldite" epoxy (the heat generated during polymerization does not alter the microstructure), ground by hand on well-waxed silicon carbide papers (400 and 600 grit), and polished with 3- and 0.25-CL diamond paste on billiard and microcloths, respectively. The use of the various polishing and etching solutions reported in the literature resulted in the formation of irremovable reaction products on the sample surface when applied to "as-ground" or "as-polished" surfaces. The E phase was the most difficult to clean chemically and in the development of an etchant for this system several solutions which satisfactorily etched the bismuth or a phase were unacceptable because of their reaction with the E. It was found that a mixture of 50 ml lactic acid 30 ml nitric acid 20 ml (30 pct) hydrogen peroxide (Solution #1) was a satisfactory etchant for the a-matrix alloys. The samples were prepared as before and etched after 1 min of polishing with 3-p diamond paste. The etchant was applied by swabbing (light pressure) for 30 sec to 1 min and the sample was then rinsed in running water. The E has a slight stain and the a is fairly bright, Fig. 1.
