A study has been made of the efject oj different dislocation-precipitate interactions upon the temperature dependence of the flow stress of aged Ni-14 at. pct A1 alloy. It is observed that when the dislocations bow between widely spaced (-20004 coherent Ni3Al particles the flow stress decreases with increasing temperature in the normal way. However, when the dislocations cut closely spaced (-5004 particles the flow stress is independent of temperature from -100 to 600°C, due to a balance between softening of the matrix and an increase in strength of the particles with increasing temperature. The retention of strength at high tempera-tures of commercial nickel-base alloys, which are strengthened by the precipitation of a phase based upon Ni3Al, is thought to be due to the unusual strength properties of Ni3Al. The flow stress of Ni3Al increases continuous1y from -196"C to a maximum at -600"C. It is concluded from a series of thermal-mechanical tests that the sevenfold increase in flow stress over this temperature interval is due to a lattice effect and is not diffusion-controlled. The flow stress of precipitation- or dispersion-hardened materials depends on the resistance to dislocation motion within the matrix and the extra energy required for dislocations to bow between or to cut particles. If the dislocations bow between the particles or if the strength of the cut particles is constant with temperature, then the flow stress of the precipitation-hardened alloy must decrease with increasing temperature due at least to the decrease in elastic modulus of the material. There will be softening also from thermally activated cross-slip or climb, offering an additional degree of freedom for dislocations to avoid particles. For example, in the case of nickel containing a dispersion of thoria,' which most probably deforms by dislocations bowing between particles, the flow stress decreases by about 50 pct between 25" and 650°C. In A1-Cu alloys2 aged to produce the 8" precipitate, dislocations cut the particles, and the flow stress decreases by about 20 pct between -269" and 25°C. However, many commercial high-temperature nickel-base alloys, for example Inconel-X and Udimet-700, exhibit little or no decrease in flow stress with increasing temperature up to about 700°C. A characteristic feature of these alloys is that they are strengthened by the precipitation of a phase based upon Ni3A1. Guard and westbrook4 and flinn' have shown that Ni3Al (and alloys in which a third element such as molybdenum or iron is substituted for part of the aluminum) is unusual in that the hardness and flow stress increase with temperature to a maximum at about 600°C. For the flow stress of a precipitation-hardened alloy to be independent of temperature we propose that the particles must be cut by dislocations moving through the matrix and that the strength of the particle must increase with increasing temperature. Theories of precipitation hardening do not take into account the flow stress of the dispersed particles that are cut during deformation; the only dissipative process usually considered7 is the creation of interface within the particle and between the precipitate and matrix. The purpose of the present investigation has been to study in detail the temperature dependence of the flow stress of a nickel-base alloy strengthened by the precipitation of Ni3Al in two structural conditions such that when deformation occurs it does so by dislocations a) bowing between the particles and b) cutting the particles, respectively. A simple binary Ni-14 at. pct A1 alloy was chosen because considerable information is already available for this system concerning phase equilibria and precipitation reactions and rates.' Dislocation-precipitate interactions in the binary alloy should be similar to those in the more complex commercial alloys. In addition, the mechanical and physical properties of NisAl were studied in detail in the hope of elucidating the mechanism by which the strength increases with increasing temperature up to 600°C. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE For the study of the effect of precipitation of Ni3A1 upon the temperature dependence of the flow stress, an alloy containing 14 at. pct A1 was utilized; a Ni-8 at. pct A1 solid-solution alloy was employed as a comparison material. Vacuum-cast ingots were hot-rolled at 1000°C and cylindrical compression samples, 0.20 in. diam by 0.40 in. high, were prepared from the 1/4-in.-diam rod. Specimens were recrystallized and solution-treated at 1000°C for 1/2 hr and then water-quenched. A preliminary study revealed that, when the Ni-14 at. pct A1 alloy was aged for 1 hr at 700°C, significant precipitation hardening was obtained, and that the structure was free from grain boundary discontinuous precipitation; an overaged condition was produced by annealing the aged specimens at 850°C for 1 hr. The smelting of galena in the ore hearth has been practiced in many countries for several hundred years with varying success. In the United States, the water-jacketed American hearths and the Jumbb hearths have found some favor in the Missouri lead belt, where large quantities of non-argentiferous galena concentrates are produced. In form and method of operation the ore hearth has changed but little since its earliest conception. A detailed description of the furnace is lot needed here; it has been fully described in most works on the metallurgy of lead and in many technical papers. Since its field is restricted to non-argentiferous galena, containing over 68 per cent. of lead, its use is limited to a few districts; and, on account of certain disadvantages attending its operation, modern sintering and blast-furnace practice has nearly driven it out of the Missouri field. It is not generally known that the cost of producing pig lead is smaller by the hearth method than by sintering and blast-furnace smelting. Yet it is doubtful if any metallurgist knowing this to be true would recommend an American hearth installation—by reason of the disadvantages which will be briefly enumerated. The furnace has been limited to a length of from 4 to 5 ft., requiring for its operation two men working an 8-hr. shift as a maximum. The product per man is small; the work is hot and laborious; and the difficulty of completely removing the dust and fume has made it a notorious source of lead poisoning, Although suitable for operations on a small scale a large number of hearths would be required for a plant smelting 10,000 tons of 68 to 70 per cent. concentrates per month; and the number of semi-skilled laborers would be six times the number of hearths—a condition which is prohibitive. On account of the high percentage of dust and fume produced, a large flue and bag-house installation is required and, in the past, the handling and re-treatment of this dust and fume has -been a serious problem.

In the fall of 1912, the appearance of water in the oil of the Nevada Petroleum Co., Coalinga, Cal., made necessary the installation of a dehydrating plant to reduce the water below the 3 per cent. limit prescribed by the agency. Unlike the mining industry, technical literature of the oil industry is limited and extremely unsatisfactory. Until the recent efforts of the Petroleum and Gas Committee of the American Institute of Mining Engineers, no concerted movement has been instituted to secure publication of papers dealing with the problems of the oil business, and because of the additional fact that dehydrating of oil has not been practiced in California to any extent up to comparatively recent time, it was found necessary to experiment in order to determine the most satisfactory plan for this purpose. It is easy to write regarding successful enterprises, but, while not SO pleasant, it is equally desirable to write of failures so that others may be saved the loss incident to such investments. The water in this oil occurs both free and as an emulsion. Free water easily settles out, but the emulsion requires treatment. So far as can be determined, the emulsion consists of globules of water surrounded and enveloped by a film of oil. Starting with this hypothesis the theory has been evolved that in order to break up this emulsion the water must be heated at least to boiling point, when an explosion takes place destroying the globule. Unfortunately, this condition was not recognized in the installation of the first plant, which was planned on the following lines: A heater was arranged so that all the oil from the wells could be heated before reaching the shipping tanks, these being already fitted with coils for steam heating. Tanks were filled with about 4 ft. of water, live steam was turned into the coils and the water brought nearly to the boiling point, when the heated oil was run in. This for a time was partly successful, but the length of time necessary to apply this heat was too great for practical operating.

With the threatened falling off in production of the lighter oil pools of the Tampico embayment in Mexico, a general search of that country for oil-producing regions has resulted in renewed activity in the region of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, one of the first districts exploited in Mexico. Since the drilling of the first well in the San Cristobal section by the Pearson interests in 1902, drilling has been continuous, except during 1917-1921, when practically all development was stopped by the revolutionary activity. Early in 1921, a drilling campaign was inaugurated for the purpose of testing out the known salt-dome poolfi on the flanks of the salt masses, rather than on their tops where previous tests had been located. On Dec. 7, 1921, the Aguila Co., with which are consolidated the Pearson interests and which has been the only company active in developing this region, unexpectedly drilled into a sand horizon at 3015 ft. with its Conception well No. 18. The hole was unable to handle the production, as a 1400-ft. string of 121/2-in. casing was hanging in the hole, a salt-water horizon drilled through at about 800 ft., was not cemented off, and 3000 ft. of 4-in. drill stem with rotary bit was in the hole. This well's potential capacity was never determined, but it made 7000 bbl. of 25" Bé. oil through the bit and Pin. drill stem, in one of its sporadic flows before sanding up, and thus proved itself capable of the largest potential production of any well on the Isthmus. The well showed salt water before caving and sanding up with the drill stem still in the hole, and will probably never be used for production. Wells Nos. 22 and 23, drilled nearby, have proved disappointments after making good showings of oil. In the spring of 1922, Ixhuatlan wells Nos. 28 and 29, deep tests supposedly on the flank of the known salt cores in that field, went into solid salt; No. 28 at 2250 ft. and No. 29 at 2400 ft. Four magnetic fleld balances and several spare magnetic systems were purchased by the Brazilian National Department of Mineral Production from the Askania Werke A. G., of Berlin, in 1932. Preliminary field tests on this new equipment showed one of the vertical component magnetic systems to be defective. A series of measurements designed to investigate the functioning of these instruments, and particularly the defective system, showed it to have an abnormally low magnetic moment, as compared to the satisfactory systems, and a high-temperature correction that was opposite in sign to that which would be expected for a noncompensated magnetic system. Since these systems were of the "temperature compensated" type, this condition indicated an accidental overcompensation. Attempts to correct for this overcompensation by readjustment of the compensating masses on the aluminum and Invar spindles failed because the distance by which the position of the masses could be shifted was insufficient. The temperature effect was reduced by this readjustment but was not entirely eliminated, as was to be desired. Theoretical deductions indicated that the defective condition of the system could be explained as due to three possible causes: (1) considerable loss of magnetic moment of the system; (2) increase in the magnetic temperature coefficient of the laminas; (3) dislocation of the component parts of the system caused by a shock experienced after it left the factory and before it was tested in Brazil. Later information received from the factory after examination of the returned system indicated that the third cause probably played the most important role. A. A. CENTER*—This paper reminds me of the beginning of the work of the Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australasia. Early work for this Company, as some of you may know, was done at the Bully Hill Plant in California. After working there for some time Herbert Gepp, now Sir Herbert, came to the Anaconda Co. plants in Montana where I met him. He spent some months there, in fact almost a year if I remember rightly. That was when we were breaking in the new electrolytic zinc plant at Great Falls, Montana. From there he went back to Australia and started in on the plant there. I believe they had an original plant of about 20 tons per day of cathode zinc. We heard from them for some time, until they were able to go along on their own, and they have done very well ever since as you have heard. Their practice, (the flow sheet, the leaching practice), has been quite different as reported in the paper and apparently they are still following that practice to some extent. While the earliest work on selective flotation was done down in Australia, the big companies there, strange to say, were far behind the American companies in taking it up; and it is only in comparatively recent years they have gone to the alkaline circuit and dropped out thereby more of their iron and lead. The John Fritz Medal was awarded in January, 1916, to Dr. Elihu Thomson, "For -Achievements in Electrical Inventions, in Electrical Engineering, and in Industrial Development, and in Scientific Research." The medal will be presented to Dr. Thomson at a meeting, to be held in Boston on Friday evening, Dec. 8, 1916, in the Central Lecture Hall of the new buildings of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The program of the evening will include adresses by John J. Carty, Chairman of the Presentation Committee of the Board of Award, E. W. Rice, Jr., President, General Electric Co., and Dr. Richard C. Maclaurin, President, Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The presentation will be made by Dr. Charles Warren Hunt, Chairman of the Board at the time the award was made, and the ceremonies will conclude with the response of Dr. Thomson. The John Fritz Medal is awarded from time to time for notable scientific or industrial achievement, and was provided for in a fund subscribed in memory of the great engineering pioneer, John Fritz. The award of the medal is made by a permanent board composed of four members from each of four American National Engineering Societies, namely, the American Society of Civil Engineers, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the American Institute of Mining Engineers and the American Institute of Electrical Engineers. BefoRe a new coal-washing plant is installed, or an existing washery is remodelled and improved, considerable experimental work on the coal to be washed should be done. A thorough examination of a coal, to determine whether it can be washed successfully and the best and most economical process for securing a satisfactory grade of washed coal, calls for mine sampling, analytical work, and experimental coal-washing tests which may require several months' time and the expenditure of considerable money. Having collected the required data on the characteristics of the coal and the results secured with different types of machines under different sets of conditions, it is necessary to decide what method of treatment should be used. The interpretation of the experimental data is no small part of the problem. The first step in the investigative work is to determine from the characteristics of the coal and the manner of occurrence of the impurities whether it is possible to separate the dirt from the coal and produce a washed coal of the required quality. Then it is necessary to select the type of washer or the system of treatment that will produce the greatest amount of washed coal of this grade for the least cost. To secure this information, tests may be made at laboratories operated by consulting or contracting engineers, at the testing plants of machinery manufacturers, at commercial washeries, or in an experimental washery erected on the site of the proposed plant. Such tests will produce figures in which every factor, including analyses of raw coal and washed coal and yield of washed coal, may vary widely. The present paper represents a preliminary investigation of the ultimate structure of iron-bearing materials which have been subjected to heat treatment for the purpose of agglomerating the fines, or for chemical changes, or for both. Primarily, the object of this inquiry was to determine the relation of the microstructure of each of these materials to its specific susceptibility to the action in the blast-furnace. It is hoped that this small contribution will serve as a nucleus to a line of research that will throw some light upon the debated questions involved in blast-roasting. Thus far the investigation has been conducted along lines of analogy of known principles, rather than through the application of any well-defined system of microscopic petrography. This is obviously due to the fact that we are dealing with ma-terials which are the artificial products of a new art, rather than with the natural materials from which the essence of the pure science has been evolved. In the limited time allowed for this research, it has been conducted upon those materials the chemical content of which allows of their use commercially in the blast-furnace. The following microphotographs are arranged in the order of the degree of complete fusion to which the mass in question has been subjected, in effectively binding the particles together. A very notable fact here clearly demonstrated is that the degree of fusion to which the material has been subjected is inversely proportional to the reducibility of the product. The characteristic of the material under consideration to which reducibility is almost universally attributed call be progressively traced in the following arrangement, through the identity of the obvious microscopic constituent. Furthermore, the degree of fusion to which a bod? has been subjected is recorded in the presence of resultant products of fusion in that body. Such readjustment is generally apparent

The brilliant and very original matter in Professor Jeffries' discussion† should rank not only as an independent paper, but as a most important one. In particular, the explanation which it gives of the remarkable Sauveur phenomenon, over which so many of us have puzzled long and hard, is so clear, complete, and cogent as to go far toward establishing Professor Jeffries' hypothesis. The very leatures of Professor Sauveur's photographs which fit this hypothesis so exactly are reproduced in Chap-pell's photographs of steel coarsened under somewhat different conditions.' The ideas developed by these discoveries are so novel that convenicnce of language seems to call for new conventional terms for expressing them. In what follows here I propose certain terms for this end, for criticism and improvement, and I attempt to generalize from Professor Jeffries' hypotheses. Generally speaking, a given set of grains which undergo no growth in the cold will, when the temperature is raised progrcssively, start to grow on reaching a certain temperature, and will continue growing at all higher temperatures. The "germinative" temperature is that at which growth begins, quite as the conditions which cause a seed to grow are "germinative." We have then an inert temperature range below the germinative temperature, and a growth range above it, the germinative temperature being the limit between these two ranges. So, too, a germinant grain is one which is at its germinative temperature, and hence beginning to grow, while inert grains are those below their own germinative temperature, and the term "growing grains" includes those which are germinant and those which are above their germinative temperature. These last could be called " supergerminant" if the distinction should be needed. "Germinative temperature" seems better than "critical temperature

The steel industry of the United States has depended in the past almost wholly upon imports for its supplies of manganese. Many of the important domestic sources yield ores leaner in their natural condition than the foreign ores the steel industry. has been accustomed to use. To make them available, therefore, either the ores must be concentrated or the practice of the steel industry modified. Roughly 25,000 T. annually of high-grade manganese ores are used for dry batteries for chemical purpose, and in other ways; while approximately 750,000 T. are required for making steel. , By present practice, every ton of steel takes an average of about 14 lb. (1.8 kg.) of metallic manganese. This is generally added to the steel in the form of an alloy, the standard alloys being the 80-per cent. ferro-manganese and the 20-per cent. spiegeleisen, During the year 1917, 286,000 T. of ferromanganese and 193,291 T. of spiegeleisen were made in this country, the former largely from imported ores; and 45,381 T. of ferromanganese. was imported. The metallic manganese represented by these alloys was 304,000 T., the product of roughly 800,000 T. of high-grade ore and 345,000 T. of low-grade ore. Manganese Deposits in the United States Before the war manganese ore was mined in relatively small quantities in the Appalachian region, including Virginia, Tennessee and Georgia, and in Arkansas, but owing to the increase in prices during the past three years manganese mining has been undertaken also in Montana, California, Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, Utah, and Minnesota. From data now available it appears that in this country deposits of high-grade manganese ores are usually small, while materials lower in manganese and higher in iron occur in appreciable quantities. Results of a pilot operation in the Carlsbad Basin are discussed. After hydrafracing between wells, a block of potash was removed by solution techniques. The distance between frac wells was about 200 ft, the thickness of potash mineralization, 5 ft. By proper manipulation, a feed of concentrate brine was obtained. The ex-periment showed that the thin-bedded potash could be removed by the solution techniques. The details of well construction, method of operation, and removal rates are discussed. Continental Oil Co.'s laboratory research on the fundamentals of potash solution mining has been expanded by means of a series of field tests, and subjects such as well completion and hydraulic fracturing were added to the investigation. Both single-well and multi-well systems were studied in the field work. Discussion Background: The current paper discusses one field test in which potash was solution mined by a two-well system from a thin sylvinite zone. The potential economic value of solution mining evolves from (1) the use of drilled holes and solution techniques instead of excavated shafts and caverns and (2) the ability to mine both land and marine deposits through any type of overburden geology and below conventional mining depths. Recent interest has been focused on potash' and other soluble minerals, such as trona. Solution extraction minerals, such as copper and uranium, are also worthy of important consideration. In addition, many of the techniques are directly applicable to the construction of horizontal underground storage carverns in salt. There are two general approaches to potash solution mining. The first is to mine on a single-well basis, in which the same well bore is used for both injection and production. This method is slow, and the areal extent may be quite limited in other than very thick ore zones. The second, and the preferred approach, is to mine on a multi-well basis in which the solvent is circulated between wells. This technique, if applied in a manner which allows the ore zone to be mined from the bottom upward, results in nearly all the solution taking place from the cavern roof. Salt removal rates, therefore, are very much higher than from a single-well system.l Wells can be interconnected into a multi-well pattern by several means. One is to join single-well caverns in the lower part of an ore zone. Another is to use the hydraulic fracturing techniques developed in the oil fields.' We preferred the fracture approach because of its potential for creating the greatest area of salt exposure. Test Site Description: The field tests were conducted in New Mexico's Carlsbad Basin, where the potash deposits are flat and uniform over reasonable distances. Here, 12 potash zones are present in the massive Salado Salt section. The specific target was the Third Ore Zone which is about 4 ft thick at our location and about 1150 ft deep. The test pattern was designed in the shape of an equilateral triangle with a fourth well located in the center, 200 ft from each of the vertex wells. This configuration allowed the ore zone to be hydraulically fractured from the center well with good assurance that the fracture would intersect the bore of at least one outside well. Several multi-well test patterns would be available if the fracture connected all wells. Well Completion: Surface casing was set in the top of the Salado Salt at 600 ft to shut off water flows from the surface sands, and the salt section was drilled and diamond-cored to a point below the Third Ore Zone. A drilling fluid made of diesel oil with a small amount of emulsified water was used to drill and core the salt. This fluid was highly successful in preventing enlargement of the drilled hole and in promoting good core recovery. The three outside wells were completed by setting 51/2-in. casing at the base of a streak of anhydrite about 20 ft above the ore zone. Pipe was set high so that the intersection point of the fracture could be detected even if the fracture migrated above the ore zone as it progressed outward from the center well. The center well itself was completed by cementing 51/2-in. casing through the Third Ore Zone. Cement bond logs run on the center well have shown excellent bonding. Fracturing Practice: A mechanical tool was used to cut a notch through the casing and into the salt at a point about 1 ft below the ore zone in the center well. The purpose of this notch was to fix the point of fracture entry into the salt. The fracturing was done with water at injection rtaes as high as 30 bbl per min. The salt parted at 1450 psi; and it required only 5 min for the fracture to reach the well which was 200 ft to the south. It took about 5 min more to reach the other two wells. Caliper surveys were run to locate the point of fracture entry in the three outside wells. The fracture appears to have drifted downward slightly, entering the outside wells at the top of a streak of carnallite 8 or 9 ft below the ore zone. A cross section of the wells selected for the multi-well test is shown in Fig. 1. The figure includes KC1 values based on core analysis and the trace of the fracture plane between the wells.

In describing their procedure for measuring the lattice parameters of solid solutions, Abrahamson and Lopata report (p. 77) the final heat treatment of their alloy specimens as "700°C for 100 hr, followed by a furnace cool". The isothermal part of this treatment may be expected to precipitate solute in excess of the stable a solid-solution limit at 700°C; the subsequent slow cooling is likely to reduce the dissolved solute still further. Fig. 1 (upper) presents the data for titanium alloys so he;rt-treated and shows the lattice parameters of solid solutions containing up to 3.5 at. pct Ti; Fig. 17 (lower) shows 2 at. pct Ti as the solubility limit in a iron at 700°C. Figs. 1 and 17 are thus incompatible. The paper contains comparable incon~patibilities for zirconium alloys, for niobium alloys, and for tantalum alloys. The final heat treatment at 700°C may also be responsible for the anomalous "knee" in the lattice-parameter data for nickel alloys, Fig. 3. The "knee" composition is located near the 700°C limit of the stable a solid-solution field;37 alloys of the experimental composition range with more nickel than the "knee" composition are two-phase at 700 C and prolonged heat treatment of them at 700°C would tend to produce inhomogeneity rather than homogeneity. In Figs. 4 and 7, the composition ranges of the zirconium, hafnium, and niobium alloys examined terminate at alloy concentrations of 0.1 to 0.2 at. pct. These metals form very stable oxides and their partial removal from solid solution in iron by impurity oxygen may be expected. We believe that the authors should have reported the procedure by which they distinguished the amounts of alloying elements in solution and in oxide. The diagrams pertaining to copper in Figs. 3 and 18 (lower) are almost certainly incorrect. Three recent investigations of this system38-40 all substantially agree on the solubility of copper in a iron, finding it to be much larger than that reported by Abrahamson and Lopata. The change of the lattice parameter with composition reported by Abrahamson and Lopata is too large by a factor of three to five, as seen by comparison with the findings of other investigators.41738 Moreover, the authors violate, in Fig. 18, the accepted Fe-Cu constitution diagram37 by ignoring the eutectoid at about 850°C.

A method is described for the numerical solution of the diffusion equation with a composition-dependent diffusion coefficient and applied to the radial growth of a cylinder; the radial growth of a sphere, and the symmetric growth of an ellipsoid. Sample applications of the method are made to the growth of particles of proeutectoid ferrite into austenite. RECENTLY&apos; we described a method for numerical solution of the diffusion equation with a composition-dependent diffusion coefficient for the case of the growth of a planar interface. In this paper we extend this method to describe the radial growth of a cylinder, the radial growth of a sphere, and the symmetric growth of an ellipsoid. In the latter case, limiting values of the axial ratios of the ellipsoid reduces the problem to one of a cylinder, a sphere, or a plane depending on the axial ratio. A check on these limiting values is made in the results section. In all of these cases we consider growth from zero size. A natural consequence of this assumption as applied to the sphere, for example, is that the radius of the sphere is proportional to the square root of the time. This is consistent with the condition that the radius is zero initially, i.e., grows from zero size. It may be argued that it is more realistic to consider particles which grow from a nucleus of finite initial size; even in this case the analysis of this paper is likely to be applicable. This can be seen if a comparison is made of the work of Cable and Evans,2 who consider a sphere of initially finite size growing by diffusion in a matrix with a constant diffusion coefficient, with the results of Scriven3 for growth from zero size. This comparison shows that the rates of growth in each case differ trivially by the time the particle has grown to about five times its initial size." This investigation is a generalization of those of Zener,4 Ham,5 and Horvay and cahn6 to the situation often encountered experimentally, in which the diffusion coefficient varies with concentration. First let us consider each of the cases separately. An attempt is made to explain the effect of stress on strain aging by examining the mechanism of yielding for a group of aged dislocations. The experimental results on which the theory is based indicate that a linear relationship develops between the aging stress and the discontinuous yield effect in a low carbon steel THE discontinuous yield effect that occurs in bcc metals after strain aging is usually explained by the interaction of interstitial atoms with individual dislocations. Attempts have been made to interpret the kinetics of strain aging in terms of interstitial segregation to nonrandom groups of dislocations1-3 but apart from Li&apos;s4 work little or no effort has been made to examine the effect of groups of aged dislocations on mechanical properties. It appears likely that such groups can be stabilized if a positive load is maintained on the specimen during aging5 and, furthermore, that the enhanced strain aging effect associated with aging under load might be due to the stability of these aged groups. The effects associated with this latter phenomenon have been described by Almond and Hull, Ref. 5, Figs. 2 and 3, and it is found that the upper yield stress, the lower yield stress, and the yield point elongation are increased by aging under load. The yield point elongation reaches a maximum value but the enhanced effect persists in the upper and lower yield stress values even after extended aging treatments when the general level of the flow stress curve rises. The flow stress, as measured at 8.5 pct total strain, however, is independent of aging stress. Almond and Hull5 showed that it was unlikely that the differences in mechanical properties could be caused by stress enhanced diffusion and they suggested that the effect was in some way associated with the different dislocation distributions that are obtained when specimens are aged with and without an applied stress. At that time no explanation was offered for the strengthening effect produced by stabilized dislocation distributions but additional tests have been performed to establish a quantitative relationship between aging stress and mechanical properties, and also to examine more closely the effect of varying the procedure for applying the aging stress. EXPERIMENTAL The material used was an iron wire containing 0.015 wt pct C, 0.002 wt pct N, and 0.006 wt pct 0. Tensile specimens with a 1 cm gage length and 0.08 cm diam were annealed at 850°C for 1 hr in vacuum to establish a grain diameter of 0.032 mm and then aged at 200°C for 24 hr. After this treatment the amount of carbon left in solution would be less than 10-4 wt pct, and ni- as aging time is increased. It is suggested that this observation, and effects that arise from varying the method of applying the aging stress, can be explained by a strengthening mechanism whereby dislocations are more difficult to move when they are aged in piled-up groups. trogen would be the main cause of strain aging. Tensile tests were performed in a hard beam machine at a constant crosshead speed of 0.02 cm per min and the specimen chamber was immersed in a temperature controlled silicone oil bath at 32" * 0.05"C. RESULTS All specimens were prestrained 5 pct before aging under stress and the results in Figs. 1 to 5 show the effect of aging time and aging stress on the following parameters ?UY = auy — ?F(5); i.e., the difference between the upper yield stress after aging,?uy, and the flow stress after prestraining 5 pct, ?f(5). ?LY = sly —sf(5); the difference between the lower yield stress after aging, ojy, and the flow stress after prestraining 5 pct. s8.5 = the flow stress at 8.5 pct total strain after aging at 5 pct strain. Varying the Loading Procedure. Three variations in the procedure for applying the aging stress were examined; i) After prestraining, the specimen was unloaded to a stress of 18 kg mm-2, aged at that stress, and then tested. ii) After prestraining, the specimen was unloaded to 2 kg mm-" then reloaded to 18 kg mm-&apos;, aged at that stress, and tested. iii) After prestraining, the specimen was unloaded to 18 kg mm-&apos;, aged at that stress, then unloaded to 2 kg mm- before testing. Specimens were unloaded or reloaded by decoupling a clutch in the drive transmission of the tensile machine. This enabled the crosshead to be driven manu-
