The difficulty of exact neutralization by ammonia of the acid solution obtained in the determination of arsenic by the method of fusion with carbonate of soda and nitrate of potassium, led me to try the effect of neutralization by oxide of zinc. I obtained most satisfactory results, and found a great saving of time. The oxide of zinc being added in excess, there is no delicate testing with lit? mils paper and tedious alternate adding of dilute ammonia arid acid until the proper point is reached. The excess of oxide of zinc, too, seems to hold, from the filter, the gelatinous silica and alumina, which are usually precipitated upon neutralization, and thus to render the washing of the precipitated arseniate of silver almost invariably much more rapid. Except the substitution of the neutralization by oxide of zinc for the more tedious method by ammonia, the details of the process are practically the same as those published by Mr. Richard Pearce, of Argo, Colorado (Proceedings of the Colorado Scientific Society, vol. i.), who shows what very accurate results can be obtained by the fusion process. I have made numerous tests of comparison between the two methods of neutralization, and find that those by the oxide of zinc agree almost exactly with the old method. Increasing the quantity of nitric acid, even to considerable excess, to be neutralized by the oxide of zinc did not affect the precipitation of arseniate of silver. The process may be outlined as follows : Take 4 to 1 gramme finely pulverized ore, and mix in a porcelain crucible with eight to ten times its weight of a mixture of equal parts of carbonate of soda and nitrate of potassium (Kerl. Metallurgische Probirkunst gives 4 to 5 nitre to 14 soda). Gradually bring to fusion and keep so, three to five minutes. Cool. Disintegrate in hot water. Filter and wash with hot water. Acidify the filtrate with nitric acid, and boil to expel carbonic acid and nitrous fumes. Cool. Add an excess of an emulsion of oxide of zinc. The bottom of the beaker should have quite a layer of oxide of zinc, after stirring.

Much has been written of late regarding the flotation of coal as a means of reclaiming the valuable portion of the fines encountered in nearly all methods of coal preparation. Whether the process be wet or dry, whether the dust be sent through the entire process or removed prior to the cleaning by some such method as screening or aspiration, one of the final products consists of a considerable proportion of — 48-mesh material. The percentage of this —48-mesh material depends upon the mining method, transportation, storage, and method of preparation. The tonnage of this dust material ranges from 1 to 10 per cent of the total output of the cleaning plants. Four methods of disposal are available for this coal: 1. Disposal with the refuse from the plant. 2. Addition, after being reclaimed from the wash water, or dust collectors, without cleaning to the larger sizes. 3. Separate disposal as a pulverized fuel. 4. Cleaning so that addition to the larger sizes benefits the product as a whole. It is also true that flotation in one form or another is the only known way to effectively clean this material. While some processes do a reasonable cleaning job down to and including +l00 mesh, by far the greater majority stop at or short of the + 48-mesh size. Much of the literature on coal flotation passes by the fred pulp density and size by merely stating that the feed varies from 20 to 30 per cent solids and that the size range is from — 1/4 in. or — 1/8 in. to 0. Small wonder then that some operators with entirely different conditions, and not knowing the machine capacity, throw up their hands in despair when flotation is mentioned. Too much parallel is drawn between flotation methods as applied to ores and as applied to coal, to the detriment of the latter. R.C. Ferguson (District Manager, Hardinge Company Inc., Hibbing, Minn.) — In the opening paragraph of Mr. Bernstrom's paper he stated that the Cascade mill performance information is preliminary. With the completion of the 1962 operating season, more reliable performance information became available. The main bearings, which had been damaged, were reconditioned at the factory. New Gatke bearing bushings with a 120° are of contact were supplied. Provision was made to introduce high pressure lubricant at two points in each bearing. New spherical bearing balls that operate in spherical seats were aligned at the factory and held in place by several setscrews to aid in installing the bearings in the field. The screws were not loosened prior to, or during, operation; therefore, the bearings operated as rigid bearings. The lubricant cooling system was changed to the cooling tower type to provide lubricating water of a suitable temperature. Another refinement consisted of installing a device to add a set percentage of soluble oil to the make-up water.

The Canadian National Railway system is completing construction of the first major tunnel in North America to use the coarse-aggregate (+ ½ -in.) shotcrete technique of primary support and lining. The tunnel was driven 29 X 20 ft in cross section, 10,760 ft long, passing under an industrial and residential area of Vancouver. With the exception of 1400 ft in soil (mainly impervious tills), the tunnel passes through a very young series of flat-lying sedimentary beds, to a large extent so incompletely consolidated as to fall apart on exposure. For a conventional steel-support system, it was estimated 8 WF, 28-lb steel should be used at 5-ft centers. Cost of erection including lagging would amount to $120 per linear ft of tunnel at 304 per lb. With 8-in. concrete cover on the steel, lining would cost $280 per linear ft at $82 per cu yd. Thus, minimum cost of support and lining would have amounted to $400 per linear ft. It is now estimated that at least 90% of the rock tunnel would have required support and 100 % required lining. Specified shotcrete support was 6 in. in the arch and 4 in. in the walls. Cost of this work was roughly $100 per linear ft. In addition, another $10-$12 per ft has been incurred in drainage and waterproofing wet areas and in measures to correct experimental and operational errors, thus finalizing the support as a lining (Fig. 1). The tunnel was driven three shifts five days weekly, no blasting being allowed by city ordinance between midnight and 7.00 a.m. A six-drill jumbo was used to drill a 10-ft round, 110 holes blasted three times daily. A 2-in. layer of shotcrete was applied to the newly blasted arch commencing within 45 min of blasting. This was done from a flying deck that extended over the muck pile from the jumbo (Fig. 2). Also during the mucking cycle, the preceding incomplete arch support was brought up to 6-in. specification. The walls were sprayed 4 in. thick during the drilling cycle (Fig. 3). The shotcrete machines and aggregate bins were mounted on the jumbo.

When I began my career (the first assignment was mucking the "drainage" ditch) an experienced miner told me, "Remember son, happiness is a journey, not a destination. . . ." If you missed the 100th Anniversary of AIME in New York this year, you are missing the journey. There are not enough superlatives to describe the event. Especially since New York is "known to have it all." An Indefinable Plus There was a little something different at this meeting. I cannot explain what, but there seemed to be more of everything. There were more wives there this year-what a pleasure to see all the lovely women mingling through the conference- which was reflected through our own attire and mannerisms. In fact, everyone looked so great, we checked to see if it really was a convention of miners. You wives keep coming to all of the events, because so much is added by your presence.

THE importance of cold-working in the fabrication of metals is in marked contrast with our ignorance as to the nature of the accompanying internal changes. The failure of the usual methods of testing to provide a consistent picture of these internal changes has given the incentive for the present program of investigating the effect of cold-working upon the internal friction of metals measured at small strain amplitudes. It has previously been shown1,2,3, that the internal friction introduced by cold-work is removed by annealing at comparatively low temperatures. In the present paper the following additional factors are investigated: (I) frequency of measurement, (2) amount of cold-work, (3) temperature of measurement. Special care was taken to minimize the internal friction due to causes other than cold-work. The present paper is purely experimental, the authors believing that any conclusions drawn from this work as to the nature of the internal changes accompanying cold-work would be premature." PREPARATIONS OF SPECIMENS In this study of cold-work it was desirable to eliminate as far as possible all other sources of internal friction. One disturbing source is the lack of temperature equilibrium between adjacent crystallites of a vibrating specimen.4 Temperature equilibrium is aided by small grain size and by the use of low-frequency vibrations. Unless unduly long specimens are used, low frequencies can be obtained only in transverse vibrations. But in transverse vibrations a second source of internal frictions is present, that arising from transverse thermal currents.5 The effect of these may be reduced by increasing the transverse dimensions. The grain size and transverse dimensions of the specimens were thus so chosen as to render the vibrations simultaneously nearly isothermal with respect to intercrystalline thermal currents, and nearly adiabatic with respect to transverse thermal currents. The material for this investigation was a 70-30 brass, part of the same lot of material that was used for some earlier studies on the effect of strain on proportional limit.10 It had the following composition: copper, 70.59 per cent; zinc, 29.39; lead, 0.01; iron, 0.01. This material was received from the brass mill in the form of 3/4-in. rod, cold-drawn to final size by a 65 per cent reduction of area from material that had been annealed to give a grain size of 0.060 mm. Rods of appropriate length were annealed for 2 hr. at 400°C. and cooled in air. The annealed rods (grain size, 0.012 mm.) were then stretched in a tensiontesting machine, using special grips10 to ensure axial application of the load. The rate

DISCOVERY of a commercial ore deposit has resulted from a program emphasizing geophysical techniques and concentrating upon exploration of alluvial-covered areas. United Geophysical Co. selected these areas as offering the best possibility of success, for here the surface evidence of ore deposits has been hidden from the eyes of prospector and geologist alike. Pima mining district, Pima County, Arizona, was selected for initial exploration. The project was successful in that a commercial ore deposit was discovered and proved through drilling and extensive underground development. A limited region of activity was chosen and library research was begun on available economic and regional geological publications relating to the mining districts. Field reconnaissance of those districts which seemed to hold exploration possibilities provided a general picture and ascertained the existence of alluvial-covered areas of interest. At the conclusion of the reconnaissance trips all data obtained were compiled, and the district which seemed to present the best exploration possibilities was selected by statistical methods. The statistical summary was based on the following considerations: Geological Factors: 1—type of intrusive, P—presence of favorable host rocks, 3—apparent intensity of mineralization, and 4—presence of favorable structure in covered or unexplored areas. Economic Factors: 1—past production from district or mine; 2—size, shape, grade, and type of ore deposit in the district; 3—ease of acquiring mineral rights; and 4—general development facility. Exploration Favorability Factors: 1—results to be anticipated from geological methods alone; 2—application of geophysical methods, namely, topographic conditions, surface interference, depth-size relation, physical property contrasts as related to ores or controlling structural features; and 3—drilling factors. Admittedly, many of these, factors do not lend themselves to absolute evaluation, but relative evaluation, subject to inaccuracies of personal judgment, is always possible. A relative scale from 1 to 10 was established for every factor, representing varying degrees of favorability. For each district a numerical evaluation of each factor was established and a numerical total determined. The obvious advantage of this scheme is that a more concise summation can be presented by numerical means than can be achieved by descriptive means. After a district had been selected as favorable, the first step was to carry out more detailed geological and economic studies to narrow down the areas of interest. The second step was to compile all available geological data from publications and add to these data by mapping where necessary. Geological interpretation and projection of structural or other control into covered or unexplored areas was made whenever logical. To determine the possibilities of geophysical application and to select a geophysical method, physical property contrasts were related to mineral assemblages and/or structural control. A roasting procedure for synthetic copper sulfide which results in a reproducible transient melting at 450° and 470°C is described in this paper. Possible causes for this melting phenomenon are suggested, and also a procedure to avoid it during the roasting. This melting is believed to be responsible for the occasional occurrence of stickiness in the commercial roasting of copper sulfide concentrate. Many workers have studied the roasting of copper sulfides, but only Lewis et al. have reported that fusion and, in some cases, fusion with "boiling" occurred in the neighborhood of 450°C. The DTA and TGA apparatus, the materials used in this investigation, and the discussion of chemical reactions occurring during the CuS roasting are described in an earlier publication. CuS, in the form of either pellet or powder, was heated at 280° to 330°C in a flowing air or 30% 02: 70% N2 atmosphere. Heating was continued at this temperature until no further weight increase due to sulfates formation was observed on the TGA thermogram. This is believed to be due to the inability of SO, to diffuse out from the sulfate layer on the surface of the pellet, thus halting the sulfate-forming reactions. Hereafter, the sample oxidized in this manner will be referred to as "partially oxidized CuS." X-ray analysis and microscopic examination of a polished cross section of a partially oxidized CuS pellet showed the following order of layers starting from the center of the pellet: Cu2S, Cu2O, CuO • CUSO4, and CuSO4. A bare thermocouple inserted in the center of a partially oxidized CuS pellet (2.5 g) did not indicate any noticeable change in the temperature of the pellet when melted at 450° to 470°C in an inert or oxidizing atmosphere. During the preparation of a partially oxidized pellet, the temperature of a CuS pellet increased by 50°C due to the exothermic formation of sulfates in air at 320°C. The endothermic peak associated with the melting phenomenon at 450°C is shown in [Fig. 1.] A CuS pellet (0.2 g) was oxidized in flowing air (150 cc per min) at 10°C per min up to 320°C and held there for about 2 hr. Then, N2 replaced air and heating was continued up to 500°C. The exothermic peak at 320°C represents an overall formation of sulfates, and an endothermic peak at 450° to 470°C represents the melting phenomenon. To observe the melting visually, a small (50 mg), partially oxidized CuS pellet was heated (in static air) in a hot-stage microscope. The melting phenomenon was observed on an auxiliary TV screen. THE existence of isothermal martensite without the presence of the athermal form thus far has been established only in a 6 pct Mn, 0.6 pct C steel' and a 23 pct Ni, 3.5 pct Mn-Fe alloy.' " Theoretical calculations, moreover, predict this phenomenon to be observable only within narrow composition limits.' In all other steels, it is generally considered that martensite inevitably forms upon cooling below the M, temperature. Even the possibility of isothermal martensite transformation has been questioned for the common steels, although Averbach and Cohen" showed that martensite formation does not stop when the cooling is arrested and that as much as 5 pct retained austenite may transform isothermally to martensite at room temperature. This note presents some observations made on a number of low alloy steels by dilatometric and inductive measurement of isothermal austenite transformation at various temperatures close to the Ms. In the dilatometer studies reported previously, austenitized specimens were immersed in a salt bath maintained at proper temperature and immediately inserted into the dilatometera8' already at thermal equilibrium with the bath. The dilation was read on a dial gage divided into 0.001 mm intervals. Induction measurements were made with a separate excitation source and a test coil, sealed together in a salt-tight case. The increase in the induced voltage caused by the transformation products was recorded at a paper speed of 4 mm per sec. The steels studied are listed in Table I. Specimens prepared from steels 1 and 2 were in the form of hollow cylinders 60 mm long, 10 mm ID, 14 to 16 mm OD, while specimens of steels 3 and 4 were in the form of notched-bar impact test specimens, DVM type. Specimens of steel 5 were in the form of strip, 7x0.3 mm. In the bainitic range, curves representing the amount of transformation vs log time have a single step appearance, as is shown by the curve of isothermal transformation at 320°C in Fig. 1.Y ransformation proceeds in accordance with the Austin-Rickett equationo P -----------= k t" 100-P where P is the percentage of transformed austenite, t is time, and k and n are constants. Near the M, temperature, however, complex curves having two steps are observed. As shown in a previous papera for steel 3 isothermally transformed at 245"C, such complex curves can be separated into two separate transformations or reactions each following the Austin-Rickett equation. In the Ti-Cd system two intermediate phases, TiCd and Ti Cd, have been found and characterized by X-ray diffraction powder techniques. An earlier reference' had reported the existence of the compound Tisd. No structural details, however, were given nor was there any indication of the possible existence of other binary compounds. Studies of the solubility of titanium in liquid cadmium2 led to the discovery of both TiCd and Tisd. The solid phase in equilibrium with saturated solutions of titanium in liquid cadmium at temperatures below 620°C is TiCd, whereas TizCd is the equilibrium solid phase above 620°C. Both thermal analysis and X-ray studies show that a peritectic reaction between the y phase (~isd) and cadmium to form the 6 phase (Ti Cd) occurs at 620°C. X-ray diffraction powder photographs of material isolated from the ingots used in the solubility measurements as well as material prepared by a direct heat of the appropriate stoichiometric amounts of titanium and cadmium can be indexed on the basis of a tetragonal unit cell with a = 2.904 ± 0.002A, co = 8.954 * 0.004A, c/a = 3.083. No variation of lattice parameters indicative of a range of composition is evident. With four atoms in the unit cell the calculated density of the intermetallic is 7.05 g per cm3; the observed value is 7.07 g per cm3. The TiCd lattice is primitive as indicated by the fact that there are no systematic absences among hkl reflections. The absence of all hko reflections for which h + k = 2n + 1 is also evident. This systematic absence indicates the following two space groups, C\h — P4/n and D&~4/nmm; both groups, however, have the same two- and four-fold positions. Stoichiometry, symmetry and space group indicate two likely structure types. They are the PbO-litharge3 (B10) type and the Ti CU (B11) type. Spatial considerations favor the B11 structure with atoms placed in the following positions: 2Ti (c) 0, 1/2, Z; l/2, 0, Z 2Cd(c) 0, 1/2, Z; 1/2, 0, Z The TiCd structure may be summarily described as a layered structure in which double cadmium layers alternate with double titanium layers along the c-axis. The best agreement between calculated and observed intensities is obtained for the values ZTi = 0.608 and ZCd = 0.130. IT IS proper that there should be a brief accounting of the stewardship which was entrusted to the Joint Conference Committee by resolution adopted by the. Organizing Conference on June 4, 1920, in part as follows: RESOLVED, that it is the sense of this Organizing Conference that the Joint Conference Committee should be entrusted with making provision for putting the conclusions of this Conference of engineers into effect, etc. Pursuant to this authority, the Joint Conference, Committee has acted as an Ad-interim Committee has- prepared, a synopsis of the proceedings of the Organizing .Conference, has edited and published the Constitution and By-Laws adopted by this Conference, and. has issued an invitation to become Charter Members of The Federated, American Engineering Societies; to the list of organizations to whom invitations had been extended to attend 'the Organizing., Conference. Rare earth element (REE) analyses of cumulus plagioclase from the PGE ore zone of the Stillwater Complex indicate that pressure fluctuations in the magma chamber acting on a single magma cannot be responsible for features such as the reappearance of Mg-rich olivine on the liquidus. The data are more consistent with a model involving multiple injection and mixing of geochemically distinct magmas. The PGE-bearing sulfides of the J-M Reef are associated with such a reappearance of olivine, indicating that the unusual location of the ore zone may be related to the addition of new magma, compositionally distinct from magmas that produced cumulates in the Ultra- mafic zone of the complex.

The Convertol process was first described in Ger- many by Muschenborn1 in 1952. In the U. S. Fraser2 reported this new process in 1953, and Brisse and McMorris-resented the results of a Convertol pilot plant at the Alpheus preparation plant in Gary, W. Va., illustrating the mechanics of the process by a series of sketches. The purpose of the present investigation was threefold: 1) to determine the relative effectiveness of various oils and hydrocarbons for recovering coal by the Convertol process, 2) to ascertain the behavior of coal pulps in this process under various operational conditions, and 3) to compare Convertol with flotation in the recovery of fine coals.

IT is notable that the first large-scale mine operation equipped entirely with detachable bits was the Badger State mine of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. in Butte, Montana, just 30 years ago. This mine in 1922 was producing approximately 1200 tons of ore per day. Much of the data presented in C. L. Berrien's article1 describing the development and installation of the Hawkesworth detachable drill bit were obtained from these operations. As in any pioneering effort, no precedent existed and many difficult problems required solution, so that the changeover to detachable bits at all Butte hill mines was not completed for 6 years. There was widespread disbelief as to the probable efficiency of the new installation.

ONE unique distinction can be claimed by the new Chairman of the Coal Division, C. E. Lawall: he is the only A.I.M.E. member also a university president, though several engineering colleges are headed by Institute members. Only last year he was promoted from director of the school of mines to president of West Virginia University, following a term as acting head of that institution of over 3000 students. He was born in Catasauqua, in eastern Pennsylvania, on Nov. 21, 1891, and went to Lehigh, receiving an E.M. in 1914, and an M.S. seven years later.
