Coal mining activity first began on the West Coast in 1864 and has since led to the exposure of large areas of coal and host rock to chemical weathering. These exposed abandoned workings have led to the formation of acid mine drainage, which flows into selected rivers and streams impacting on the natural environment. A previous study conducted for the West Coast Regional Council identified four catchments receiving mine drainage which had elevated arsenic concentrations. The aim of this research is to expand on this initial study by determining the spatial distribution and attenuation of the arsenic within the sediment and water column in each stream of concern. Cannel Creek is influenced from drainage from the Bellevue coal mine adit and exhibits a low pH of ~3, elevated sulfate concentrations and high arsenic and iron concentrations in the sediments. This pattern is repeated in the Rapid Stream and Soldiers Creek catchments, which are also affected by adit inflows from the Sullivan and Blackball coal mines respectively. Soldiers Creek also has significantly high arsenic in the waters, with an accompanying pH of ~5.5. Snowy River exhibits a similar trait with a pH also of ~5.5, but with very low sulfate concentrations. Arsenic concentrations in the waters are consistently around 30 ppb, with sediment concentrations up to 900 ppm. These sediment values might be partially attributable to the operation of the Snowy battery gold ore production facility, but the consistently high As concentrations in the water column and in the sediment upstream of the battery have an as yet unconfirmed source.

This paper focuses on the impact of high pulp temperature on sphalerite flotation after the zinc regrind circuit in the Zinc Plant of Somincor, owned and operated by Lundin Mining Corporation. In the zinc circuit, the zinc rougher concentrate is reground with forged steel media before flotation with one stage of roughing and scavenging, and three stages of cleaning to obtain a zinc final concentrate (zinc grade >50 per cent). After regrinding, sphalerite flotation has been found to be seriously affected by high pulp temperature which may occur during the summer months. Mineral recoveries were found to be seriously reduced at pulp temperatures above 60¦C. At this high pulp temperature, neither elevated copper sulfate concentration nor a decreased pH alone appreciably increased Zn recovery. However, a combination of these two (eg a decrease in pH from 11.5 to 10.8, and an increase in copper sulfate dosage from 400 g/t to 800 g/t) was found to reduce Zn depression at high pulp temperature. At pulp temperatures below 45¦C, the negative influence of pulp temperature on mineral recoveries was minimal. A systematic series of flotation tests and solution/surface analyses were performed to reveal causes for poor sphalerite flotation at high pulp temperature after regrinding. The decrease in mineral recovery was shown to be associated with variations in the surface species on mineral particles in response to the increased pulp temperature. These variations in the surface species include collector desorption and superficial oxidation to form lead/zinc oxide/hydroxides on mineral particles. The influence of the type of regrinding media on sphalerite flotation at high pulp temperature was also addressed in this work.

The Osborne copper-gold deposit (within the Trough Tank project area) is located in the Cloncurry Shire about 195 kilometres south-east of Mount Isa. It is hosted by Proterozoic metasediments of the Eastern succession of the Mount Isa Inlier. The deposit is overlain by 25-40 metres of Mesozoic cover, so it represents a true "blind target". Placer Exploration has 100% outright ownership of the property, having purchased the remaining 10% interest in the property from Shell in early 1993.Intensive exploration, both surface and via drilling at Osborne, has taken place since 1985, when CSR Limited Mineral Exploration and Development Group (acquired by Placer in 1988) entered into a joint venture with Billiton Minerals. Exploration effort from 1985 to June 1988 outlined a 20 kilometre strike length of magnetic horizons, in what was termed the North-East, Central and Southern anomalies, which were drilled with weak indications of copper-gold mineralization in the North-East anomaly. During the later half of 1989, four core holes were drilled into the shallower northern partofthe North-East anomalywhere previous drilling had outlined economic intersections of mineralization. These holes encountered high-grade copper-gold mineralization confirming the potential for an economic deposit to be hosted within the ironstone sequence. Further drilling involving over 400 holes (100 kilometres of drilling) has brought the deposit up to its present resource status.The current resource inventory is 36 million tonnes grading 2.0% copper and 1.0 grams pertonne gold and includes a high-grade zone of 13 million tonnes grading 3.6% copper and 1.5 grams per tonne gold. The discovery of this potential economic mineralization resulted from a persistent exploration effort based on indications that a large mineralizing system existed within a sequence of ironstones.

The æProfit Driver ModelÆ is a tool which builds costs from first principles and integrates revenue, costs and physical mining parameters and, hence, can quantify the impact and leverage on profit. In this paper an æexample mineÆ has been created to represent a typical Australian Open Cut Coal Mine. This has then been input into the Profit Driver Model to allow different variables to be tested. A series of variables were tested to determine which ones had the highest impact on profit and results are useful to management as a guide to the areas in which they can focus effort to achieve better profitability. Whilst the highest profit drivers are those external to the control of management and include selling price and exchange rate, the next most sensitive are those variables related to the geology of the mine and the mining method. These included coal quality, yield and strip ratio. Site management has some control of these. For example, the ability to vary the sequence of mining or improve the yield by a more efficient coal washing process. The efficiency of the workforce and management has similar impact to the mining variables. Finally, there are the supply variables, such as fuel, labour and explosives which are the least sensitive although, cumulatively, still significant. Each mine is different and the results of the example mine will not apply to all mines. However, the approach taken is universal and the tool illustrates a simple method to quantify the profit impact when changing variables. The benefit of the approach is the short time taken to get a set of results. This allows the more detailed and time consuming work to be more focused. The results illustrate that management has a significant influence on profitability.

A significant resource of uranium has been discovered within a buried palaeochannel located in the south western corner of the Officer Basin of Western Australia by PNC Exploration (Australia) Pty. Ltd. The mineral- isation is redox controlled and is hosted by Eocene organic rich paludal sediments. Prob- able insitu reserves are 13,000 t of contained uranium with an average ore grade of 0.12% at a cutoff grade of 0.03% U. The Mulga Rock palaeochannel has been traced for at least 100 km beneath the Quaternary surficial cover. The main channel is horseshoe shaped with the channel arms vary- ing from 5 to 15 km in width. The western arm connects to the Lake Raeside-Ponton Creek drainage system, whilst the eastern arm'is open to the south. The headwaters of the palaeo- channel are thought to have been the Lake Minigwal drainage system, prior to its capture by the Lake Rason system. Differential.erosion of the basement rocks during the Late Cretac- eous to Early Tertiary strongly influenced channel shape and resulted in the main channel being confined to a Permian,mudstone filled valley. Upwards of 100 m of fluviatile sediments accumulated within the palaeovalley during a period of subsidence in the Early Tertiary. Three broad stratigraphic units have been re- cognised within the channel: 1. An upper unit of fluviatile sands with interbedded lacustrine sediments, which have subsequently been wholly oxidised and variably silicified and ferruginised. 2. A middle unit of lacustrine to paludal sediments, which host the main mineral- isation. 3. A basal unit of fluviatile gravels and sand. The presence of excellently preserved Nothofagidites in organic rich paludal sediments from the middle unit, suggest that unit was laid down in a non-marine, fluviatile, humid environ- ment during the Middle Eocene.

Completion of a project requires two separate money-focused activities, namely economic evaluation of the cash flows underlying the project (before financing) and if the economics look promising, how it can be financed. Economic evaluation might be best led by a person with a technical-operating background, whereas financing might be best led by an accountant. Both should be presented in simple language with easy to understand models. Economic evaluation has a sad and bad history because it evolved from the fringes of accounting. Anyone can become a self-appointed practitioner. Some still take pride in mathematical complexity without realising that they distance themselves from the decision-makers and alienate other team members. Today there is no evaluation modelling consistency across the mining industry and this reflects poorly on our discipline. It is not tolerated amongst our peers in engineering and accounting. In 2009 æbest practiceÆ economic evaluation modelling is well defined. It is:easy to follow;tailored to its purpose;transparent;discipline, rigour and consistency;recording of all source data; and hencequick to audit. Mantra: If you cannot readily understand my model you do not have a problem, I do! The task of the economic model is to make the range of business cases underlying the decision easy to understand. Intellectual power is used to simplify the decision to its key issues and risks and to present the full range of possible business outcomes in readily understood terms. Project team members, management and the board must be able to make their decisions with æeyes wide openÆ. A steering committee should be established to develop a set of standards and practices that could be adopted for economic modelling within the industry. The industry needs to purge itself of the undisciplined economic evaluation modelling that now characterises the discipline.

The paper deals with the taking of soundings in connection with coal mining operations under part of the Pacific Ocean adjoining John Darling Colliery.INTRODUCTIONIn the early days of mining in the Newcastle District there did not appear to be any definite law specifying the limits to which mine workings, other than certain borings, could extend under tidal waters.As time went on, a figure of 120 ft. was fixed as the minimum thickness of strata between the roof of the seam and the sea bottom; beyond this mining operations are disallowed. The laws relating to working coal under tidal waters are as follow:-The minimum width of pillars to be left shall be eight (8) yards and the maximum width of bords or other excavations shall be six (6) yards, but the lessee may at his discretion increase the minimum width of the pillars or decrease the maximum width of the bordsor other excavations so as to increase the general safety.The eight (8) yard pillars shall be left unwrought.In on-road of every pair of Winning-off or leading headings, a bore shall be kept going ten (10) feet in advance for the purpose of foretelling the presence of any fissure, wash-out, open joint, fault, dyke, or otherwise, and all winning-off headings shall be driven atleast one hundred (100) yards in advance of the working bords.The most accurate and trustworthy information shall be obtained by the lessee not only' of the depth and character of the ocean bed, river, lake, or estuary deposit, but also of the strata overlying the coal seam.When working under the ocean, strata shall be bored through and proved a minimum thickness of thirty (30) feet at the face of the leading headings or levels immediately such headings or levels are under the ocean, and...

A pilot scale experimental investigation of the condensation of zinc vapour from smelter off-gases was performed in conjunction with a mathematical modelling study of the system. The work investigated the feasibility of using the high heat and mass transfer rates associated with a fluidised bed to condense zinc directly from smelter off-gases containing zinc vapour. Of particular interest was whether zinc would revert to zinc oxide during the process of condensation, and whether a zinc fog would form and be carried out of the condenser. A 0.1 m diameter fluidised bed condenser was mounted on the top of a 200 kVA DC electric arc furnace in which mixtures of vapours and gases were generated at 1150 - 1300¦C. The gas/vapour mixtures investigated included Zn/N2, Zn/N2/CO/CO2 and Zn/N2/H2/H2O. Greater than 90 per cent of the zinc was deposited on the zircon sand bed of the condenser, and there was no sign of zinc oxide formation, suggesting that the rate of heat transfer was faster than the reaction rate for zinc oxide formation. There was also no evidence that fog was being formed in the condenser. Using the methods of Kunii and Levenspeil (1991), a mathematical model was developed to predict the behaviour of the fluidised bed condenser. The model enabled the distribution of gas/vapour temperature and bed temperature to be determined as a function of distance from the condenser inlet. Similarly the partial pressure of zinc vapour in the gas mixture, and hence the mass transfer rate of zinc to the particles, was determined. Experimental data allowed validation of the predicted bed and gas/vapour temperatures.

Mispah form (FAO: Lithosol) soil contaminated with >380 000 mg kg-1 creosote was co-composted with sewage sludge and poultry manure for a period of 19 months. The soil was mixed in a ratio of 1:1 (v/v) with wood chips to improve aeration. The soil-wood chips mixture was then mixed in a ratio of four soil-wood chips mixture: one compost material (sewage sludge or poultry manure). Compost heaps were set up in triplicate on wood palettes overlaid with double layers of nylon straw bags. Control experiments, which contained the contaminated soil-wood chips mixture without sewage sludge or poultry manure were set up in triplicate. Moisture, temperature, pH, ash content, C:N ratio of the compost and the creosote concentration of the soil was monitored monthly. The concentration of selected creosote components in the soil was also determined at the end of the incubation period. Temperature was observed to rise to about 60¦C in the poultry manure and about 58¦C in the sewage sludge within two months of incubation, while temperature in the control fluctuated between 15¦C and 35¦C throughout the incubation period. Creosote concentration in the control was reduced by 17 per cent at the end of the incubation period while concentration of creosote in the sewage sludge and poultry manure compost was reduced by about 99 per cent. The percentage rate of creosote reduction in the poultry manure compost was initially lower than observed in the sewage sludge compost. However, the reduction rate became similar towards the end of the treatment period. The concentrations of selected creosote components were reduced by about 100 per cent within the same period. Respiration of compost microorganisms and counts of microbial populations showed that microbial activity correlated with reduction in creosote concentration.

Basicity(aO2−) has been known to affect the physicochemical properties of molten slags in the metallurgical processes. However, because of the impossibility of direct measurement of single-ion activity, various indirect measures such as capacity, redox equilibrium of transition metal ions, activity of basic oxides, and (theoretical) optical basicity have been proposed; but these basicity measures have been restricted within slag systems and the interaction between measuring elements and slag components has affected the quantitative estimation of slag basicity. Recently, since it was reported that solubility of noble metals in molten slags could be an indirect measure of basicity, the influence of slag basicity on the solubility of platinum and silver has been reported. The reaction mechanism of platinum dissolution into basic slags has been reported, whilst that in acidic slags has not (Nakamura and Sano, 1997; Sano and Nakamura, 1997; Nakamura et al, 1998). Richardson reported that the solubility of metals such as cupper, gold, silver, and lead in the CaO-SiO2-Al2O3 slag was presumably dependent on the atomic radius and the accommodation ability of the silicate network (Richardson, 1974). Swinbourne and You measured silver solubility in the Na2O-SiO2 slag over a wide range of oxygen partial pressure and suggested that silver would be present as both Ago and Ag0.5 in the slags (Swinbourne and You, 1999). For brevity, these previous works discussed the dissolution mechanism of silver into the slags based on the existence of silver as a neutral or molecular species. However, because the almost chemical reactions occurring in the slag are affected by the basicity, the reaction formula with O2- ion is required based on the ionic characteristics of the slag such as desulphurisation and dephosphorisation reactions as given in Equations 1 and 2, respectively.

It is now common practice to use substantial amounts of recycled water in mineral processing plants to minimise both environmental discharge and withdrawal of fresh water from often limited water resources. Recycled water additions to process water are frequently obtained from sources such as tailings dams, tailings thickeners and concentrate dewatering. It has been suggested for some time that addition of recycled water to process water will impact the quality of the process water and that changes in water quality may influence flotation performance. To date, investigations of process water quality changes as a result of water recycling have been limited and as a consequence there are very few data available to substantiate these ideas. Thus the impact of recycling on process water quality remains largely unquantified. Over recent years we have conducted water quality studies at a number of mineral flotation plants with varying degrees of water recycle. This paper describes the results of these investigations, including data which suggest that build up of salinity due to recycling while it occurs, is reduced by fresh water make-up. The fate of flotation reagents such as collectors, promoters, frothers and flocculants during process water recycling has also been investigated. Results show that process water concentrations of these reagents vary from plant to plant, but that, with the exception of frothers, most reagents are generally removed from the system through mineral adsorption. In general, the results of these investigations suggest that recycling process water will not result in continuous increase in solute concentrations as appears to be the commonly held view.The effects of changing water quality on flotation can vary. In many cases, flotation conditions can be optimised to suit the water quality, while in others, treatment of the water may be necessary to obtain acceptable plant performance.

In Australia, ilmenite is produced from beach sand deposits. These deposits contain varying quantities of the valuable minerals zircon, rutile and ilmenite, along with a variety of other minerals. The valuable minerals are upgraded using combinations of gravity, magnetic and electrostatic processing techniques to yield high-grade products. One of the penalty elements present in ilmenite concentrates is chromium, present mostly as chrome spinels. This mineral is particularly difficult to separate from ilmenite, as the properties of the two minerals are very similar in relation to the traditional separation processes. While the deposits which have been treated in Australia in the past have had only low levels of chromium present, many of the newer deposits contain much higher levels of contamination and, thus, there is an increasing need to develop robust processes to separate chrome spinel from the ilmenite. Flotation, which is a unit process with the potential to solve this problem, has surprisingly received little attention for this application. The literature suggests the research effort to characterise the general flotation properties of chromite (chrome spinel with high chromium content) has been extensive and a substantial amount of data is available. However, the problem of separating a small amount of chrome spinel from a large amount of ilmenite requires a different approach to that from separating chromite from siliceous gangue, which has been the main commercial focus of chromite flotation in the past. Much of the work done has been fundamental in nature and the results obtained are fairly inconsistent, as is the testwork completed at batch and pilot plant scale. While these inconsistencies have been attributed to the variable composition of the mineral, there is little evidence supporting this premise. Just as chrome spinel and ilmenite have similar physical characteristics, the flotation response of both minerals is also similar. This paper reviews the literature relating to the flotation of chrome spinel and presents a considered approach to the development of a robust flotation method to separate chrome spinel from ilmenite.

Zircon is extensively used as moulding sand in the production of steel and high-duty iron castings. To achieve a satisfactory grade of zircon concentrate, the zircon particles may need ,to have surface coatings removed, as such coatings can hinder electrostatic and magnetic separation of zircon from associated minerals. Xn addition the presence of surface coatings on the zircon. particles can cause sinterins and fusion of the zircon to the east metal resulting in "burnt-on" sand or fritting of the casting. "Burnon" necessitates cleaning of the casting by grinding or chipping, which is expensive and results in loss of definition on the casting face.Hudson (1966) has pointed out ,that some coatings on mineral sands are lightly-adhering clays which can be removed quite readily by agitating the sands in water for a few minutes-thus their removal constitutesno problem. However, the heavy gingery coloured coating which adheres strongly to the surface of the particles in some deposits, and which has generally been considered to be a form of iron oxide (Baker, 1962; Hudson, 1966), cannot be removed effectively by attrition cleaning in water (Hudson, 1966). Such coatings limit the usefulness of these concentrates in the foundry industry.An investigation of strongly-adhering coatings on "ginger zircon" concentrates from the Yoganup deposit of Westralian Sands Ltd has shown that the stain consists of a cemented mixtvre of hydrated iron and aluminium oxides and kaolin minerals, and that it can be removed by a relatively low cost treatment.IDENTIFICATION OF THE STAIN BY XRDX-ray powder diffraction (XRD) patterns were obtained from small samples of stain scraped, individually, from the surface of hand-picked zircon and ilmenite crystals. These scrapings were mounted on quartz fibres and exposed to CoKa radiation in a 57 mm Debye camera. To avoid heavy fogging of the x-ray films, a substantial amount of the iron oxides was preferentially leached from the scrapings (before mounting) with an ammonium oxalate-oxalic acid solution (Rooksby, 1961). The Sinclair Nickel Project, wholly owned by Xstrata Nickel Australasia (XNA), includes an underground mine, a concentrator, a village, an all-weather airstrip and associated mine infrastructure. The operation is located 70 km north of Leonora in the prospective and historically productive eastern Goldfields region of Western Australia. Xstrata Nickel has successfully developed the Sinclair deposit into a 350 kt/a operation since its discovery in November 2005, with contained nickel metal production to date in excess of 10 600 t, of which 5500 t is from the underground operation.The narrow, continuous, medium-grade Sinclair nickel sulfide deposit accessed by the Phoenix Decline has a shallow 15¦ - 20¦ plunge that is approximately 1000 m long down dip and open at depth to the north. The flat plunge and low-grade nature of the orebody presents challenges regarding the amount of horizontal waste development that can be economically excavated, which in turn affects ventilation, egress, mine services and diamond drilling.The mineralisation is hosted between an ultra mafic hanging wall and a basalt footwall and is being mined using a bottom up, sublevel open stoping method. The stopes are retreated to a central access, filling voids in the process with waste mullock where possible and using cemented mullock fill where end exposure is required. Tight filling the flat dipping hanging wall has proved to be challenging given the angle of repose for the waste mullock fill is steeper than the angle of the hanging wall.Reconciliations of mine performance against the original feasibility study show positive changes and operational optimisations enabling Sinclair to achieve its mining targets in a safe, sustainable and economic manner. The conventional method of transporting mine tailings from a process plant to a tailings storage facility (TSF) is in the form of a low to medium density1 slurry, which can be pumped using centrifugal pumps. Over the past several decades, therefore, mine operators have generally adopted this default approach. There are, however, some convincing arguments why consideration should be given to thickening the tailings slurry to a higher density paste consistency. In particular, the minimisation of environmental impacts, the reduction in water consumption and the cost savings relating to TSF closure make paste an attractive option for the life of mine tailings disposal. There are several environmental impacts that are associated with a conventional slurry TSF, such as land sterilisation, aesthetics, dust, seepage and acid mine drainage. Some of these impacts, such as dusting, may be difficult to mitigate while the TSF is in operation. Others can be influenced by adjustments made to the tailings slurry density at the plant. Unplanned fluctuations in slurry density and/or viscosity can have a significant influence on TSF performance and can exacerbate the environmental impacts relating to the facility. Relatively minor changes in the solids content of the slurry can affect tailings beaching behaviour, degree of segregation, position of the phreatic surface, amount of freeboard, consolidation behaviour, placed (settled) density (and hence TSF capacity) and in situ strength of the tailings. Paste is a non segregating slurry and many of these effects can be minimised at the TSF when the tailings slurry is thickened to a paste. These improvements are manifested by reduced seepage, flexibility in selecting an appropriate final landform, ability to rehabilitate progressively and reductions in plant water usage. It is possible to minimise environmental impacts of a TSF through the use of tailings paste. Ideally the paste production plant should be part of the initial design of the process plant. However, significant benefits can be gained by adding a paste production plant at some time later in the operational life of the mine to reduce environmental impacts and facilitate an environmentally acceptable TSF closure.

One common public perception of mining is that financially it is an extraordinarily risky business. Another and contrary view, in certain circles, is that price risk and other financial risks can be relatively easily removed or shifted by a number of schemes or devices. In reality, beyond the orebody discovery stage, mining need not be any more risky than most heavy industrial businesses. Nevertheless, as stated by Rappaport, (1986): Risk is a parameter of central importance in establishing the economic value of any asset. The level of risk is determined both by the nature of the firm's operations and by the relative proportions of debt and equity used to finance its investments. These two types of risk are commonly referred to as 'business risk' and 'financial risk' respectively. The term financial risk is used somewhat more loosely herein to recognise the reality that any risk inadequately addressed in the design, construction and operation of a mining project can have significant financial consequences; usually negative. For instance, a specific area of business risk in mining is often called technical risk which definitely has severe financial consequences if not managed correctly. The various risk shifting, hedging and risk management tools available all have their place and range from merely useful to almost indispensable. However, in the long-term, financial risks are maintained at acceptable levels by the application of sound, more fundamental business management principles. There are many with a vested interest in perpetuating a perception that the conceptual foundations of sound management practice are extremely complex. In reality, most management concepts are prosaic, but their application requires incredible discipline and hard work. There is no magic formula or 'silver bullet'. It appears that a company whose activities are restricted to mining can analyse the range of risks specific to mine development and operations more clearly than companies in which mining is just one of many businesses. The almost universal failure of large oil companies in the mining business is probably the best example of lack of any clear comprehension of fundamental business characteristics and risks. Conversely, in regard to risk management, choosing to be in other business as well as mining does nothing to reduce the risks of the mining business. The individual shareholder can probably make such 'diversification of portfolio' decisions better than most management teams. It could be argued that diversification across a number of disparate businesses may actually increase overall corporate risk due to lack of management concentration and focus. These differences between the perceptions of financial risks and the realities in mining need to be further elaborated in relation to some uncompromising business concepts.

Control of complex machinery through the internet is investigated through the construction of a vehicle prototype developed using off-the- shelf hardware. The vehicle was able to be controlled remotely through the use of a client side interface connected to a steering wheel and foot pedals. By attaching sensors to the vehicle, data could be collected from which one could infer the effectiveness of such a control system. The effect of latency on control was monitored by the introduction of an artificial latency, simulating a wide variety of internet-related issues, such as unstable connections and dropouts. Sensor data could then be used to gain an understanding of how the system could be improved though either control or interface design. A path tracking experiment was conducted to gather controllability data and it was found that such a system is plausible within a reasonable range of latencies. It is expected an area of future research would be an extension of this current project, applying the information gained to real world control systems.

The disadvantages of the present zinc producing methods, RLE and ISP, are high energy consumption and environmental problems. Therefore, efforts have been directed in Outokumpu Zinc towards the development of alternate routes. One interesting pyrometallurgical process to produce zinc is to inject zinc calcine together with a solid reductant into molten iron, saturated with carbon. This process has been studied by thermodynamic calculations, laboratory tests and mini-pilot test runs at Outokumpu Research Oy, Pori, Finland. The results of these tests are presented and discussed in this paper. The mini-pilot tests demonstrated that over 97 per cent evaporation of the zinc was possible using a reactive coal dust as the reducing agent. The recovery of zinc in the metal phase was at best 88 per cent of input zinc, but only part reported in molten lead in the splash condenser. The final metallic zinc contained at best 98 per cent Zn, the main impurities being dissolved lead and coal carried along with the flue dusts.

The general principles of technical due diligence best practice that are involved in assessing a mineral property in the early stages of its development are described and a bibliography of relevant papers is attached. The issues specific to the evaluation of gold deposits are highlighted. The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy's (The AusIMM) initiatives in this area, dealing with the proper public reporting of Reserve/Resource information (JORC Code) and property assessment/valuation (VALMIN Code), will be used as a framework against which the illegal tampering with drilling samples to artificially boost their gold content (salting) from the Busang gold deposit (Kalimantan, Indonesia), owned by Bre-X Minerals Limited (Calgary, Canada), will be reviewed. While the Busang saga was based upon fraud, through salting the samples, the general lessons to learn from such a scam are worth documenting. In Australia, most of those working in the mineral industry belong to long established professional institutes and consultant associations (eg The AusIMM or Mineral Industry Consultants Association [MICA]) that require their members to work within their technical limits and to comply with best practice guidelines, or risk being judged and found wanting by their peers in the context of strong Ethics Codes. There is also a strong interface between such representative professional bodies and the corporate and financial market regulators (ASC/ASX), which closes the monitoring loop. Canada has only now seen the wisdom of having this type of early warning system in place. Fraud and deliberate deception will be always possible, but deception on the enormous scale that occurred at Busang is most unlikely with proper surveillance systems in place and the use of accredited technical professionals. There should have been more hard data available about so big and rich a deposit owned by a C$6Bn company.

Statistics show that despite a low lost-time accident rate there is a high fatality rate from falls of ground in pillar extraction work. Investigation of accidents indicates that in many cases the planned ex- traction cycle has been ignored. Better training, supervision, and personnel protection and where possible changed systems are suggested as a means of improving safety and achieving better Results.
