The Asian projects are now in their second terms after the five-year first terms. Ultrafined-grained steels were developed in lab-scale and/or in practical process. Basic approach has been performed to explore the evolution mechanisms of ultrafine-grained microstructures. There have been investigated two approaches to make the ultrafine grains: the "recrystallization route" and the transformation route. In the "recrystallization" route, heavy deformation at low temperature is necessary for the ultra-refinement. In the transformation route, making the high density of ferrite initiation sites in the deformed austenite, especially of the heavily compressed austenite structures, is essential for the ultra-refinement, and further hindering the ferrite growth is also inevitable to utilize the high initiation rate. Strength and toughness are dramatically improved by the ultra-refinement. Fatigue property is also excellent. The poor uniform elongation can be enhanced by the design of the second phase dispersion. At the same time the application has been also pursued from various viewpoints of engineering to take advantages of the ultrafine-grained steels. The conditions for rockburst occurrence are traditionally identified as: high stress, high extraction ratio, strong brittle rocks, folding, faulting, and unfavourable excavation geometry. Based on a critical review of case histories, this paper identifies oblique loading of orebodies by the major far field principal stress as a cause of rockbursts. Orebodies subjected to this loading condition are termed orebodies in shear. Orebodies in shear are subjected to compressive and shear loads. The case histories presented unambiguously show that the magnitudes of the far field principal stress alone, and a knowledge of the conventional rockburst causing factors are not sufficient for mine planning and design. The orientation of the major far field principal stress, or for that matter the driving stress relative to the orebody axis, should be recognised as one of the causes of rockbursts. It is suggested that since stress orientation is an important factor, and orientations from stress measurements are so variable, orientations from stress measurement data be complemented with underground observations from borehole and excavation breakouts to determine the actual in situ stress orientation, whenever possible. Also stress modelling for the design of critical elements (pillars) should include a sensitivity analysis on the relative critical field stress direction. The Snow Lake-Wekusko Lake region of northern Manitoba conta ins numerous lode gold occurrences, including the largest gold deposit in the Churchill Prov ince, the Nor Acme mine. The Aphebian volcanic and sedimentary rocks of this region are comprised of submarine volcanic strata, overlain by turbidites, both of the Amisk Group, and fluvi atile sedimenta ry strata and bimodally composed subaerial volcanic rocks of the overlying Missi Group. Gold occurs as: 1) accessory gold in volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits, 2) lode gold in shear zones related to sy n- to post-FI thrust fa ults, and 3) lode-gold associated with post-F2 fault . An alteration a emblage of biotite, al bite and calc ite is associated with both groups of lode-gold deposits, and has been superimposed on the regionall y-developed metamorphic assemblages. AJthough these deposi ts are spatial ly related to britt le-ductile faul ts of different initial ages, they appear to have all fo rmed after the major period of reg ional fo lding and metamorphism, and thus may be penecontemporaneous. The alteration is different from the sericite-ankerite-quartz assemblage that is typically associated with gold deposits in Superio r Prov ince. Deposits in thi s area of Churchill Prov ince may have formed either at a higher temperature or a deeper structu ra l level than tho e in Superior Prov ince.

"During crushing, rock particle is subjected to complicated loading and the particle shape influences the fragmentation outcome. Thus, a highly controlled laboratory test is desired to establish the relation between the loading and the fragmentation parameters for better understanding the rock crushing mechanism. In this work, a split Hopkinson pressure bar system in combination with high speed cameras is utilized to carry out a dynamic ball compression test, in which the spherical rock sample is adopted to avoid the shape effect. Using the elasticity theory, the history of the axial symmetric tensile stress perpendicular to the diametrical direction along the loading axis is determined, from which the loading rate and the dynamic indirect tensile strength are calculated. With the aid of the moment-trap technique, the total energy absorbed by samples is accurately determined from the one-dimensional wave analysis. Furthermore by considering the kinetic energy of the sample fragments using the high speed camera snapshots, the surface energy is determined for each sample. The relations between the loading rate and the fragmentation parameters, i.e., the number of fragments and the surface energy are established. The application of this method to a granitic rock shows that it is flexible and can be applied to the crushing study of generic brittle solids. INTRODUCTIONCrushers are widely used to break rocks to extract specific minerals in the mining industry, and to obtain rock fragments with desired size distribution in construction industry. During crushing, the breakage of particles can be in either the single-layer mode or the multi-layer mode. In the single-layer mode, the particle breakage can be assumed to be isolated, in which the interaction between particles can be ignored. It is thus suggested by many researchers that highly controlled single particle test should be performed to establish the relation between the input mechanical energy and size reduction for better understanding the crushing mechanism (Yashima et al., 1987; Tavares, 2007; Pitchumani et al., 2004)."

"The Jansen shafts are completed using purely mechanical excavation. This paper summarises the geology, a description of the shafts, the method used for excavation and the results achieved along with the challenges encountered and the solutions developed during the project. This experience is now being applied in the next generation machines and shaft sinking processes. This pioneering approach is changing shaft sinking in soft and medium to hard rock. INTRODUCTION The Jansen Mining project located approximately 150 km east of the city Saskatoon is the location of the BHP owned potash mine with an expected mining output of eight million tonnes annually upon completion. Mining contractors DMC Mining Services have used two Herrenknecht Shaft Boring Roadheaders (SBRs) to excavate the two blind shafts with an approximate excavation diameter of ten metres (inner diameter approximately 8.3 m) to depths of -975 and -1005 metres, respectively. The SBRs excavate the rock by a partial-face cutting method, using a transverse cutting drum mounted on a telescopic boom. The excavated rock is then conveyed away from the bench by an innovative pneumatic system and transferred into muck buckets to be hoisted to the surface. No drilling and blasting was done to keep to the BHP philosophy of using only mechanical excavation for this reference project. BHP VISION – MECHANICAL EXCAVATION BHP focused on mechanical excavation at Jansen due to the following perceived benefits: 1.No workers in the excavation chamber (shaft bottom), minimizing the exposure to traditional shaftsinking hazards associated with working in the shaft bottom. 2. Minimal damage to the rock fabric reducing the need for ground support and avoiding potential impact damage to freeze tubes located around the shaft. 3. Accurate excavation diameters with no overbreak, reducing volumes of rock to be removed and replaced with concrete lining."

The jet piercing process, developed by Union Carbide Canada Ltd., is well established in blasthole production in open-pit mining. By this process, holes can be drilled, shaped and chambered for blasting. In suitable ore or rock formations, a considerable cost reduction can be achieved. This paper reviews the equipment used, relates how cost savings may be accomplished, and concludes with a mention of the most recent developments in this field. JET piercing and chambering, a process for blasthole production in open-pit mining, leads, in many instances, to improved drilling and blasting techniques and costs. It is a method of working rock with a supersonic flame and, to be most effective, depends upon a characteristic of the rock called spallability. Spalling, in this case, is the breaking away of surface particles from the rock body due to stresses caused by the thermal shock of the jet flame. Various rock properties contribute to this action, but, in general, the harder the rock the greater the spallability and the more effective and economical is the jet process. The jet process has the capability to drill, ream, shape and chamber holes for blasting.

A MOS capacitor hydrogen sensor array is reported for hydrogen gas distribution mapping. Si(100) was used as substrate for film deposition. After silicon oxide growing on the silicon surface with dry thermal oxidation, palladium film was sputtered on silicon oxide as hydrogen-sensitive gate material in MOS structure. The 3x3 sensor array was patterned on silicon substrate and packaged in one chip. Sensors' response was test with impedance analyzer. The sensors in array were calibrated in the hydrogen concentration range from 10ppm to 10000ppm. The 2D hydrogen concentration distribution was obtained with the calibrated sensor array.

"The stability of calcium arsenate is discussed in relation to the possible misuse of lime in the treatment of gold processing waste waters. Stability diagrams have been derived and experimental results cited to show that calcium arsenate has a higher solubility in neutral to alkaline solution than has previously been recognized and this solubility is further enhanced by the presence of carbon dioxide, bicarbonate or carbonate.IntroductionThe removal of arsenic from gold mine waste waters has been of interest for more than thirty years, but with the recent emphasis on clean water standards there has been renewed activity in relation to that problem. The processing of gold-bearing sulphides which contain arsenopyrite and other complex arsenic sulphides is well established. Initial roasting to oxidize the sulphides leaves the arsenic in the form of both arsenic and arsenic, in which forms it is soluble in the subsequent leaching stage. Further oxidation of the leach liquors is required before the well-established procedure of precipitating calcium arsenate with lime, which is carried out despite an immense lack of knowledge of the calcium-arsenic-water system.The solubility product and free energy of formation for Ca3(AsO4)2, which are to be found in recent and reliable sources of data, originate from the work of Chukhlansev, whose experimental determination of the concentration of calcium from the solubility of calcium arsenate in solutions of various pH yields the results plotted in Figure 1. This is the work which has resulted in a wide acceptance of the ""insolubility"" of calcium arsenate and the use of lime to stabilize arsenic in that form.Laguitton attempted to further elucidate the chemistry of the lime addition method for treating arsenical waste waters from gold processing operations. The low solubility product for Ca3(AsO4)2 was the basis for his examination of likely chemical equilibria in the system. Laguitton and other workers have not considered atmospheric carbon dioxide as an important component in this system."

Introductory and General Coal has one unique quality that distinguishes it from other minerals, one that is too, often forgotten. This is the quality of ubiquity. No other single mineral supplies such a wide and varied range of human requirements nor, up to the present, is there any indication of a rival in this regard. There is, consequently, reason for individual study of each of the major portions of the overall market for coa1. The provision of heat for our homes is a necessity of life in our Northern climate and the largest single source of this heat is coal. It is intended to present here a factual survey of the use ?of coal in home heating throughout Canada and the effect of these requirements upon the production of coal and the development of this phase of the mineral industry. The coals used for house heating in Canada fall into two more or less distinct classes, the very low volatile fuels such as anthracite and including coke, and the bituminous coals, including the sub-bituminous and lignite types. The bituminous coals are, of course, consumed in very large quantity by industry and the railways and are the most important type both in tonnage and in respect to the area supplied. Canada consumes annually for all purposes some 4,400,000 tons of anthracite, 4,300,000 tons of coke exclusive of Petroleum coke, and some 40,000,000 tons of bituminous coals. This is a fair measure of the relative importance to the overall economy although it will be seen later that the concentration of the household use of anthracite and coke into one area does create a considerable problem.

"A submersible sensor for real-time gas holdup measurement in the collection zone of industrial flotation machines is introduced. The working principle is based on the generation and measurement of a pulp flow using a gas-exclusion cell immersed in the aerated slurry. The gas exclusion cell consists of a variable-area open vertical tube designed to be filled only with pulp by preventing gas bubbles entrance. The higher density of the fluid column within the cell generates a downward flow of pulp; the rate of this flow is proportional to the gas holdup outside the cell. The gas holdup measurement is achieved by tracking the velocity of the pulp flow leaving the gas-exclusion cell, using a magnetic flowmeter. Construction details of a prototype and its testing in two- and three-phases are discussed.INTRODUCTIONFlotation process optimization consists of finding and maintaining operating conditions that maximize flotation performance measured in terms of recovery and grade. The selective separation of mineral particles proceeds in two interactive zones where different and simultaneous phenomena take place: in the collection zone, the valuable particles are separated by collection on the surface of bubbles, while in the froth zone, the bubble-particle aggregates are gathered, drained to remove entrained particles, and taken into the concentrate stream. The cell overall performance, which can be determined from proper stream sampling, is a function of the recoveries in the individual zones. These zone recoveries cannot be independently measured nor calculated from operating variables. Progress in the assessment of these recoveries has been slow because on-line and reliable sensors to measure properties of the drastically different dispersions existing in both zones are not available.In the case of the collection zone, it has been demonstrated that the recovery of hydrophobic particles on the surface of bubbles, considered as a process with first-order kinetics, correlates with the bubble surface area flux (Finch et al., 2000; Hernandez, et al., 2003; Lopez-Saucedo et al., 2012). Bubble surface area flux (bubble area generated per unit time and cell cross-sectional area), is a variable affected by gas flow rate, bubble size distribution, and frother type and concentration. Gas holdup (volumetric fraction of gas dispersed in the slurry) is also affected by the same variables, and as such, carries information on the interacting variables that define the performance of the process. Therefore, a correlation between gas holdup and bubble surface area flux was expected and demonstrated (Finch et al, 2000), and since gas holdup is easier to measure as no bubble size is required, it has the potential to be the basis of a cell control and optimization strategy if a continuous sensor is available."

"Three main potash members are recognized within the Prairie Evaporite Formation of Saskatchewan and have been designated, in ascending order, the Esterhazy, Belle Plaine and Patience Lake members. Each is composed of sylvinite near the geographic center of the member and becomes increasingly carnallitic marginally. Each stratigraphically higher member has a narrower carnallitic margin. The sharp contact between carnallitic and non-carnallitic components of the formation describes a surface which may be traced regionally and is not related to bed-ding. The contact rises higher in the stratigraphic section toward margins of members. Within each of the three members, analyses indicate that carnallite becomes more abundant toward the north whereas sylvite and insolubles, increase toward the south. Within each member, areas rich in carnallite are coincident with areas in which the member as a whole is thicker than averag,e. The Belle Plaine Member contains the highest concentrations of carnallite, the Esterhazy the lowest. A maximum content of about 30 per cent sylvite is common to all three members. Insoluble contents increase in successively higher members.Map studies are combined to outline the economic potential of the potash beds in terms of depth to the top of the Prairie Evaporite, ""salt-back"" thicknesses and sylvite grades for each member."

Surface drainage, particularly mine closure drainage, must be properly considered during all stages of mine planning because it presents constraints that are critical to economic mine operation, minimizing environmental impacts and ensuring compliance with government regulations. Deficient mine site drainage increases costs of operation, causes unnecessary environmental impacts and may result in regulatory violations. The scope of this paper includes stream diversions around mine areas, drainage systems within the mine disturbed footprint, and closure drainage works to control surface water, ground water, erosion, sedimentation, and seepage discharges following mine operations. Developing selfsustaining drainage facilities upon mine closure, requires a mine plan that develops appropriate topography and constructed drainage courses that replace the function of pre-disturbance drainage systems without aggravated erosion and deterioration. Drainage criteria, particularly closure drainage criteria, represent important constraints on mine planning and are best considered by integrating drainage features into the mine plan well in advance of mining activities. Integrated mine planning by a multi-disciplinary team is recommended to achieve closure objectives at minimum cost and maximum effectiveness The geomorphic approach to channel design is an effective means of providing a drainage system that has the appearance, function and longevity of natural systems. By incorporating this technique into closure drainage planning, mine operators can construct sustainable (walk-away) drainage systems that require little or no maintenance in the long-term. This paper presents a process by which drainage criteria and associated mine plan constraints can be integrated into the mine planning process. This paper outlines the process for detailed design of drainage facilities, particularly closure drainage systems that are designed by the geomorphic approach.

The introduction and application of paste backfill over the past two decades has resulted in substantial benefits being realised by many backfill reliant mining operations who have used this technology. Paste preparation over this time period has relied basically on mechanical dewatering approaches that have included the use of centrifuges, thickeners, and vacuum and pressure filtration. In large bulk mining operations, this method of paste preparation has usually involved the construction of big and complex surface plants to meet large tonnage demands. These large plants usually have attendant high capital, maintenance and operating costs. The application of paste backfill in narrow-vein mining requires more flexibility in terms of fill preparation, transportation and placement. The method of paste fill preparation should take into consideration low manufacturing and operating costs, ability to use existing facilities at mine sites, simplicity of operation and flexibility of preparing fill over a broad range of consistencies. This paper will review alternative paste fill preparation methods and indicate those that might be better suited to narrow-vein mining.

A 2-hectare uranium tailings area has been reclaimed. The exposed tailings of 1.4 hectares were capped with glacial till and vegetated with grasses and legumes. The water running through the tailings was diverted around the tailings in a line ditch and treated with sodium hydroxide and barium chloride. Difficulties occurred in placing the till capping because of the low bearing strength and the uneven surface of the tailings. This led to varying thicknesses of till and the need for manual labour in some areas. Total reclamation costs were $32,200, with vegetation establishment costs at $13,700 per hectare. This report provides a record of work for use in assessing the long-term suitability of these treatments.

"On behalf of Bob Bruce and myself I would like to begin by stressing some key points.First, most of us know that the Canadian Mineral Processors was formed in 1969 and is an offshoot of the Canadian Gold Metallurgists. I attended that first meeting in 1969, and I haven't missed a meeting since! Pretty obvious that CMP serves the best booze! At any rate, we know that our meetings are supported by CANMET. Camsell Hall is always at our disposal; Bob Bruce acts as permanent secretary pretty much free of charge; we receive a financial grant from CANMET. This brings me to a second point.Second the Canadian Mineral Processors do not enjoy a free ride in this relationship. CMP provides a genuine service to the mining industry, to government, and to universities. For the industry, CMP serves as a forum for the rapid dissemination of new ideas and new technology developed at remote locations throughout Canada. New developments outside Canada are introduced by invited speakers at our meetings. The effect is to help reduce operating costs and increase efficiency.For government, problem areas and research priorities can be isolated through mutual discussions. Direct communication at our meetings can help CANMET to temper its goals and modify its national priorities.For universities, CMP provides a wealth of operating experience and practical know how. The yearly proceedings are a major current reference source fo1· those of us who teach mineral processing. Admittedly, the proceedings are publ-shed from CMP coffers. However, I note that our fees are up this year, which brings me to a third point.Third, we face some potential problems of a financial and political nature. From a financial view, we may lose our CANMET grant and other financial good will simply because of spending constraints. Our fees are expected to climb each year thereafter.From a political view, we know that the metallurgical society of CIM is anxious to incorporate CMP as a section. The pros and cons of such a merger have been described in a recent mailing. In th2 final analysis, the political and financial problems are interrelated. There are several alternative solutions to both problems, which brings me to a fourth point"

"INTRODUCTIONThe proper selection of carbon for a gold carbon in pulp (CIP) circuit involves careful evaluation of several physical, chemical and economic factors. A series of evaluations are required to maximize gold recovery at the lowest capital and operating costs, whether the carbon is selected for an existing gold mill circuit or a new mill under design.Although evaluation may proceed through various stages, it is the intent of this paper to outline some of the preliminary testwork that should be carried out to screen potential carbons for a particular application.An examination of the specification sheets supplied by the various carbon manufacturers may indicate some desirable properties on which to make cursory selection. This exercise by itself will not provide the basic data needed for selecting the best carbon for a particular ore pulp and metallurgical circuit. The necessity of further metallurgical evaluation is indicated by the fact that different carbons perform differently depending on the physical and chemical nature of the leach pulp. In the case of an existing mill, actual leach slurries using mill water are available and should be used for testwork. In the case of new mills, leach pulps must be prepared to simulate the proposed circuit.Five coconut shell activated carbons were obtained from various suppliers, all reported to be 6 x 16 mesh carbons recommended for CIP circuits. A metallurgical evaluation was made utilizing two leach pulps with significantly different characteristics. This paper describes the test procedures utilized and the results obtained from the testwork."

This paper briefly describes the current state of underground coal gasification (UCG) processes globally and in the Slovak Republic. Recent results of laboratory and technical tests are presented. In addition, on site measurements have added new knowledge of UCG technology. A series of laboratory tests based on physical models shows promise for managed UCG process control.

"THE November issue of the Bulletin carried in it ""Origin of the New Bruns1viclc Gypsum Deposits"" by J. Olaf Sund. This paper was a digested account of a Master's thesis at the University of New Brunswick which was a very useful compendium of information of gyp-sum in New Brunswick. It was a warded the President' s Gold .Medal and the First Prize in the Graduates' Section of the Students' Essay Competition. The present writer presents his congratulations to the winner of the competition. At the same time he must comment on the use of certain terms and on certain conclusions presented in the paper.The term ""unconformable"" has been used in several places in the paper to describe the relationship of gypsum to anhydrite in various deposits in New Brunswick in a sense which is quite alien to the accepted meaning. It has long been known tl1at the gypsum at the surface or near the surface in deposits in the Atlantic Provinces has come from hydration of anhydrite by surface and ground waters. The gyp-sum must be looked upon then as an alteration or even a weathering product. It cannot in this sense be called ""unconformable"" and thus arguments using the word in the accepted sense are invalid."

"In recent years, computer based ""expert systems"" have been taking on large complex tasks for which no exact algorithmic solutions are feasible; tasks previously reserved for human experts requiring empirical knowledge, judgment, experience, developing a ""best solution "" by the use of plausible reasoning. Mining method selection is an appropriate area for the application of an expert system because extensive and detailed knowledge is required to make a ""best"" interpretaion of frequently ambiguous geological information. The expert system model presented here would enable users to apply expert knowledge to the evaluation of methods for coal deposits mineable by underground methods. IntroductionIn an increasingly complex and specialized world, human expertise spanning scientific, economic, social and political issues plays an increasingly important role in all branches of engineering. This is especially true of mining engineering. The number of scientific and professional disciplines involved in mine planning and evaluation, illustrates the problem. A conservative list includes geology, geophysics, geotechnics, hydrology, mining, environment, and economics.Engineers are almost obliged to be experts in at least one of the above disciplines if they are to handle the volume of information required in the planning process. Although computers have become indispensable tools in many endeavours, there is continued reliance on the human expert's ability to identify and synthesize these diverse factors, to form judgments, evaluate alternatives , and make decisions . This is especially true with regard to problems that are not easily amenable to precise formulations.The precious resource of human expert is also fragile and transient. The departure of a crucial expert from an organization ma y cause serious dislocations. Senior experienced people impart their knowledge of younger colleagues, but the demand for their talent may not leave sufficient time for such educational efforts. Dispatch systems have been used for open pit mining since the early 1980?s but similar systems do not widely exist for underground mining. There is a need for developing dispatch systems for underground mines, particularly highly automated operations such as block caving. An innovative method, Agent Based Modeling (ABM) for a dispatch system for a block caving operation, is proposed in this paper. The model is based on a particular behaviour observed in social insects. The focus of the ABM dispatch system is adaptability with respect to changing operational conditions and effective integration of maintenance modules with the operation. The paper will show the advantages of this innovative method compared to existing similar systems.
