Titanium aluminides and nickel aluminides offer the potentials, as coating materials, for high temperature and aerospace applications. In this research, attempt has been made to develop Al-Ti and Ni-Al intermetallic compound coatings on the surface of Inconel 738. The coatings applied through pack cementation and simultaneous diffusion annealing processes. Scanning-electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDAX) and grazing angle X-ray diffraction were used for evaluating of coating structure. It was demonstrated that the pack cementation technique could be used to develop TiAl3 and AlNi intermetallic compounds coating on Inconel 738 substrate. When pack cementation technique is based on a halide-activated pack with aluminum and titanium powders, the coating consists of TiAl3 intermetallic compound phase. Whereas, by pack aluminization of Inconel 738, the coating consists of AlNi intermetallic compound phase.

"Kidd Creek is a large volcanogenic base metal sulphide deposit, located near the west end of the Abitibi greenstone belt, 27 km north of Timmins, Ontario. The rhyolite geology is characterized by a NNE-striking and steeply east-dipping package of rhyolite volcaniclastics upon which has been imposed a strong ESE-striking and north-dipping structural fabric . Massive rhyolite units with grey-black. chloritic cores and yellow, sericitic margins intrude as dykes into the stratigraphic footwall and as sills higher in the stratigraphy. Massive rhyolite units positioned near the top of the felsic pile exhibit an extensive marginal development of hydraulic fracturing and are termed crackle-brecciated rhyolite.The stringer sulphide zone is positioned in a lobate blanket of crackle-brecciated rhyolite at the top of the felsic pile. The stringer sulphide zone is characterized by a mature chemical alteration, being specifically depleted in alkalis and enriched in iron-rich chlorite. with accompanying silica, sericite and carbonate alteration. A suite of trace elements characterizes this mature alteration. The massive rhyolite units, which intrude lower in the rhyolite volcaniclastics, exhibit a core of weak chlorite alteration and strong marginal sericite alteration. Tight or unfractured massive rhyolite units are essentially devoid of sulphide mineralization and exhibit a suite of trace elements characteristic of this immature alteration. It is interpreted that the massive rhyolite units intruded into an already evolving system and ""choked-off"" active conduits carrying hydrothermal fluids and subsequently acquired an immature alteration signature. Rhyolite units positioned higher in the pile developed intense hydraulic fracturing and a mature alteration coincident with the formation of the stringer sulphide zone. In summary, a model, based strictly upon the rhyolite geology, is reviewed to assist in the exploration for volcanogenic base metal sulphide deposits."

Palabora Mining Company (PMC) processes a multi-component ore body using a circuit consisting of two AG mills in parallel, closed with vibrating double deck screens and hydrocyclones. The bottom screen undersize feeds the hydrocyclones, but the screen oversize products can be treated in a variety of ways. The top deck screen pebbles can be crushed and then combined with the bottom deck oversize and recycled to the AG mill. Alternatively both the top and bottom deck screen oversize can by-pass the recycle crusher and be recycled directly to the mill. A full tap-off is a configuration when both the top and bottom deck screen oversize streams are stockpiled. The other configuration is when the bottom deck screen oversize is recycled to the mill while the top deck screen oversize is stockpiled - termed partial tap-off. This article reports the findings from the surveys performed to evaluate the performance of the PMC auto mill circuit when operated under the four different configurations discussed. Ore characterisation tests were performed to assess the deportment of the key ore components for the different configuration.

"Abstract - Volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposits, an important base-metal deposit type in China, occur widely in submarine volcanic districts of variable magmatic affinities. These VMS deposits range in age from Archean to Mesozoic, but most are in Proterozoic and Paleozoic sequences. More than 60% of VMS deposits formed in the Paleozoic, the most important metallogenic eon. Three important Paleozoic VMS-metallogenic provinces include Northern Qilian, Sanjiang and Altai provinces. The Proterozoic constitutes the next important era, but with no VMS deposits in the middle Proterozoic. VMS deposits associated with the Proterozoic volcanic rocks occur around the Yangtze Platform and in the western Kunlun-Qinling. The Triassic is third in importance, with VMS deposits concentrated in the Sanjiang Tethys. The Archean has only one VMS deposit, on the northern margin of the Sino-Korea Platform.Five distinct compositional classes of Chinese VMS deposits have been distinguished: Cu, Cu- Zn (or Zn-Cu), Cu-Fe, Zn-Pb-Cu, and Pb-Zn (-Cu). The Cu, Cu-Co, and Cu-Zn types of deposits occur sporadically from the Archean to Paleozoic, and are closely associated with mafic and ultramafic volcanic sequences. The Zn-Pb-Cu and some Cu-Zn type deposits are restricted to the Paleozoic and Triassic, and are hosted by calc-alkaline felsic rocks in bimodal basalt-rhyolite sequences, whereas Cu-Fe and Pb-Zn type (except for the Laochang deposit) deposits are restricted to the Proterozoic and occur in calc-alkaline volcanic sequences. As large quantities of marine mafic volcanic rocks were deposited in western China, Cu and Cu-Zn deposits are major types of Chinese VMS deposits.Chinese VMS deposits formed in a wide range of paleo-tectonic settings and depositional environments, such as island-arcs, rifts, aulacogens, and ocean ridge hot spots. Among these, the rift and back-arc environments are the most important, containing about 60% of Chinese VMS deposits. Aulacogens are a subordinate environment where most of the Proterozoic VMS deposits formed. The oceanic ridge and hot-spot systems are common in the tectono-magmatic domains in China, but contain only a few small Cu and Cu-Zn type VMS deposits.The Chinese VMS deposits have usually been influenced by both deformation and metamorphism to various degrees, resulting in changes in the shape and metal distribution. Seven representative deposit styles have been recognized: sheets, sheet plus strata-bound stringer, cyclically zoned deposits, mounds, mound-like deposits, strata-bound stringer-disseminated, and stockwork-disseminated deposits. The formation of these various styles of deposits is controlled by several key factors, such as lithology and permeability of the host rocks, focused or unfocused discharge, temperature and chemical composition (e.g., salinity) of hydrothermal fluids, as well as depth of seawater."

In 1987, John Schloen published a survey and analysis of copper electrorefining tank room data. Following this paper, a series of copper electrorefining surveys have been conducted and presented at each of the Copper-Cobre meetings over the past 20+ years (1991, 1995, 1999, 2003, 2007, 2010 and 2013). For each of these surveys, William Davenport has been key driving force in the collection and analysis of data. To honour Professor Davenport’s contribution to copper processing, a review of the data was conducted. Historic trends and possible future technologies are discussed.

"Geophysical test surveys were conducted with various methods (EM, lP, gravity and magnetic) over the McClean uranium deposits of the Canadian Oxy- lnco Joint Venture. The result s were assessed to judge the contribution each method might make toward further discoveries of graphite-associated uranium occurrences.The best drill targets have proven to be discontinuities in graphitic conductors and locations where the tatter are intersected by fracture zones in the Athabasca. The tests demonstrated that the preferred combination of geophysical survey s is horizontal loop EM to locate graphitic conductors in the basement and VLF-EM to locate the fractures.IntroductionThe discoveries of the McClean North and South uranium deposit s (Fig. 1) are essentially geophysical successes resulting from drilling MaxMin delineations of INPUT airborne electromagnetic responses (Saracoglu et al., 1983). After the initial discovery in 1979, various geophysical methods, techniques and instruments were employed to test their effectiveness in this environment and to guide exploration for other deposit s of a similar nature in the remainder of the 260 km2 property.The McClean uranium deposits lie below 150 m to 180 m of overburden and Athabasca Group. Radioactive signatures might be expected; however, the Athabasca Group acts as a barrier to radioactive emanations. Fortunately, the uranium mineralization is associated with graphite in the crystalline basement. Prior drilling of ground electromagnetic anomalies confirmed that EM surveys could locate and out line basement graphitic conductors. However, as there were many anomalies, most of which could not reasonably be expected to be associated with uranium , there was need to identify additional parameters, related to mineralization, which could be detected geophysically and used to narrow the search."

Abstract - BHP Minerals discovered the Archean lode gold ULU deposit on the western margin of the High Lake Volcanic Belt in 1989. The greenschist to amphibolite facies mafic volcanic and sedimentary rocks on the property are folded into a 5 km-long anticline. There is a close spatial association of Au-As zones to the trace of this F2 ULU anticline. The largest of these auriferous zones, the Flood zone, is localized at the core of the fold. The southeast-trending Flood zone consists of several anastomosing lenses that have been traced for 435 m on surface. Overall, it dips steeply (70° to 80°) to the southwest and has been intersected to depths below 600 m. The hosting high-iron tholeitic basalt displays a lower amphibolite mineral assemblage of ferrohornblende + plagioclase + ilmenite with accessory quartz and epidote. Alteration minerals include biotite, chlorite, hornblende, actinolite-tremolite, and potassium feldspar (microcline) with minor calcite, epidote, tourmaline, and titanite. The highest gold values occur where brecciated basaltic wall-rock clasts are replaced by acicular arsenopyrite + quartz + K-feldspar. BHP Minerals completed 54,783 m of both exploration and resource development drilling before selling the ULU property to Echo Bay Mines in 1995. Development of ULU as a satellite deposit to Echo Bay’s Lupin mine began in 1996. A -15% ramp was extended to the 155-meter level, and 16,011 m of underground drilling were completed before the decline in gold prices forced a suspension of activities at ULU in August 1997. The current owners, Wolfden Resources Inc., drilled 18,569 m in 2004 to increase confidence in the resource blocks. Following this drill program, a revised resource calculated by an independent consultant determined that the ULU deposit contains an inferred/indicated mineral resource of 1,130,000 t grading 11.34 g/t gold (373,748 oz) to the 360-m level. The portal was re-opened in 2005 and a prefeasibility study is underway.

The cyclic nature of drill and blast, and its inherent tendency to damage the surrounding excavation rock mass and increase support demand often result in poor advance rates ? This has motivated mining companies to replace the conventional drill-and-blast as the main excavation method with alternative methods such as mechanized excavation. ? There is little experience with mechanized or non-explosive excavation methods in hard rock metalliferous underground mining.

"The Guide to the Evaluation of Gold Deposits reviews the successive evaluation steps in the domains of geology, engineering, and economics. The Guide analyzes, in a systemic perspective, the sequence of exploration, development, and evaluation work required to bring a mineral deposit to production. The aim is to identify the metal/mineralization losses and ore dilution that each work step contributes to the evaluation and mining process. The procedure allows one to maximize the income and profits of a mining operation, and to reduce the risks of financial losses tied to investment decisions in the mining sector. For greater efficiency, the criteria of reserve estimation and classification should be integrated with the evaluation steps and methods. At earlier stages of deposit development, when quantitative knowledge is available mainly on the geological axis, the term ""delimited mineral deposit"" should be used. The term ""reserve"" should be used only in an operating mine or in a mining project, when information in the geological, engineering, and economic domains is adequate to ensure technical and financial feasibility. ""Reserves"" are by definition ""mining reserves"". Each category of proven/probable reserves and measured/indicated deposits should be subdivided into two classes to express better the many steps of mineral valuation. The category of ""possible reserves"" shall be replaced by that of ""inferred mineralization"". This system, derived from the Australasian Code, can easily be integrated into current practices of the exploration and mining industry within a short timeframe. The proposal to develop the use of the margins of error of the estimates at a confidence level of90% should be viewed in a longer timeframe. Establishing the precision of the mineral inventories and distinguishing between categories and classes by means of the margin of error will require more work and a longer break-in period.SOMMAIRELe ""Guide d’évaluation des gisements d'or"" analyse, dans une approche systémique, les travaux d'évaluation et de mise en valeur des gisements minéraux dans l'axe de la géologie, dans l'axée l'ingénierie et dans I ‘axe de l'économique. Plusieurs essais démontrent que le système propose, qui s'inspire du Code australasien, peut facilement et rapidement s'intégrer dans les pratiques de l'industrie. II pourrait également contribuer à une standardisation des méthodes et des nomenclatures à l'échelle internationale. Sub-stoichiometric roasting of arsenic-bearing copper ores is a well established practice. However, ores containing calcium commonly prove challenging where very low arsenic levels are desired, but the reasons for this phenomenon have largely been speculative. In the course of treating arsenicbearing copper ores by partial roasting in fluid bed reactors, XPS encountered one of these Ca-bearing ores which proved a challenge to roast to acceptably low levels of arsenic. Mineralogical examination of the calcines using a combination of XRD (X-ray diffraction), QEMSCAN (Quantitative Evaluation of Materials by Scanning Electron Microscope) and EPMA (Electron Probe Micro-Analysis) helped to identify the arsenic bearing species and assisted in developing a workable theory on the sequence of reactions occurring during the roast. With the assistance of thermo-chemical modelling, this allowed adjustment of the roasting conditions to minimise the amount of arsenic retention in the calcine in spite of the presence of calcium in the ore and advance the roasting program to a commercially acceptable solution.

"General purpose uniprocessor systems used in control applications, however fast they may be, at a certain stage attain saturation, forcing the user or designer to consider other avenues for solving the problem. This paper gives a broad overview of multiprocessing with special reference to transputers. Virtually all aspects, from parallel systems real-time control to artificial intelligence (AI) and expert systems, have been highlighted. The application of transpurters in unilayer and multilayer control are discussed in detail, with specific attention to sensor integration. Two case studies describe at length the utilization of transputers. IntroductionIn conformance with the high level taxonomy of parallel computer architectures as given by Ralph Duncan(l) (an improvement to Flynn's classification, which maintains the essential elements of useful taxonomy based on instructions and data streams), the MlMD architectures are categorized into two groups: (I) shared memory, and (2) distributed memory type. While the shared memory multiprocessors are more popular than the message-passing multiprocessors because they can be programmed in a conventional sequential fashion, their aspect of the architecture creates a perfonnance bottleneck. In contrast, message-passing multiprocessors (MPM) suffer from no such limitation and can attain linear speed increases that are directly proportional to the number of processors put into use. The MPM implementation also has its own advantages and disadvantages. Because the performance of the system is heavily dependent on it, the interconnection strategy in a distributed memory MIMD machine is of paramount importance. The transputer(2.J), a multiprocessor node of the distributed memory type, is becoming very popular. The advantages offered by the transputer make its application in the mining and processing industries very promising."

"In January 1974, the Minerals Division of Canadian Occidental Petroleum Ltd. made the strategic decision to add uranium to its active exploration commodities and through compilation studies selected northern Saskatchewan as the most attractive and cost-effective exploration area in Canada. In August 1974, 100 sq. miles were staked adjacent to Gulf Minerals' Rabbit Lake deposit and east of the Esso Minerals Midwest boulder train. Initial exploration was based on geologic models of the Rabbit Lake deposit.In the summer of 1975, surface surveys delineated radon anomalies which were drilled that winter and found to overlie anomalous concentrations of uranium in the regolith which forms the upper unit of the crystalline basement. Within the crystalline basement, one hole intersected graphite and pyrite with anomalous nickel-cobalt-arsenic. Geochemical and radiometric surveys followed in the summer of 1976. Drilling in the winter of 1977 intersected several zones of graphite and also anomalous, but uneconomic, uranium abundances. Also in 1977, Dahlkamp and Tan (1977) described the coincidence of graphite and uranium at Key Lake and ground EM surveys on CanadianOxy claims detected graphite conductors beneath 250 ft of Athabasca sandstone. Inco Limited joined the project in April 1977 as a 50% partner. The project area was then surveyed using the airborne INPUT EM method, which detected 84 miles of conductors, with associated graphitic metasediments. On the ground these were located with MaxMin surveys, and follow-up drilling located the ""Tent"" Lake uranium zone.In 1978, the Midwest and Dawn Lake discoveries were announced, 7 miles and 2 miles west of the Joint Venture (J.V.) claims; and, in part for this reason, the 1979 winter drilling was concentrated on the deeper west side of the property. Exploration hole 102-79 intersected altered and uraniferous rocks, but stepout holes were barren. Drill hole 153-79 tested an under-snow three-station radon anomaly east of hole 102-79 and intersected 33 feet of 7.51 % U3O8, confirming the disco very of the McClean North zone. The geophysical grid of the McClean North conductor system was extended and detailed a strong, continous conductor to the south, called McClean South. This was drilled in January 1980and hole 1004-80intersected 22 feet of 2.95% U3O8."

Modem civilization is indebted to that most ancient of the skilled crafts - the art of stone working, as the one consistent means whereby the dim un-recorded past has conveyed to our modem schools of science volumns of facts, written in characters of imperishable stone. Although left, centuries ago, to ruin and decay, architectural examples of the ancient building crafts still remain to the glory of the old master-builders, whose accomplishments in that remote age continue to influence and inspire their modem successors. Present-day architects and builders will leave to posterity just as faithful a record of our modes of living and of the methods now adopted for protection, as if it had been made by written word; and our craftsmen have profited greatly, in meeting modem requirements, by taking advantage of the indurance and utility of stone. Stone in all ages and stages of the world's civilization and development has been the material chosen by the masterbuilder, the one material possessing qualities that render it most desirable in affecting the artistic ideals of each period. It perfects the science of architecture through its durability and thus renders possible the study of man's workmanship in stone throughout periods of civilization of which we have no specific written account. Other materials have been used for the construction of man's habitations, but none have withstood the test of time, nor have established the credit of designer and builder so well as stone. _All other materials fall into ruin and decay, leaving neither mark nor monument for the enlightenment of mankind.

Aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) allows for the nano-scale exploration of materials at unprecedented resolution and sensitivity. In this paper, we combine this approach with electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) to analyze the carbon distribution in residual solids found in solvent-diluted bitumen product extracted from Alberta oil sands. Major components of these contaminant solids are ultrafine clays. Biwettable clays have been associated with the formation of solid-stabilized water-in-oil emulsion, which are known to increase the content of both water and mineral solids in the final bitumen product. We demonstrate that the residual solids present in bitumen product contain carbon intermixed with mineral particles of various size and shape. By probing the carbon content at the nanometer scale with the high chemical sensitivity of EELS, we provide direct evidence of carbon intermixing with clay platelets. This clay-organic association at the nanometer-scale will contribute to the biwettable, hydrophobic character of the platelets, and will therefore play a crucial role in the bitumen extraction process
