Noise induced hearing loss continues to afflict workers in many occupational settings despite longstanding recognition of the problems and well-known methods of prevention and regulations. Sound levels associated with heavy construction equipment range from 80 to 120 dB(A) and power tools commonly used in construction produce sound levels up to 115 dB(A).(1) The focus of this research was to determine the noise exposures of heavy construction equipment operators while documenting the workers’ tasks, (i.e. hauling, moving, and/or pushing construction material). Time-motion studies were performed at the construction sites and were used to correlate the noise dosage with the work performed by equipment operators. The cumulative dose for the operator was then plotted with references to work tasks, to identify the tasks that caused the greatest noise exposure. Three construction sites were studied for this research located in the western Pennsylvania and eastern Ohio areas. The types of construction equipment studied included asphalt pavers, backhoes, bulldozers, compaction equipment, excavators, haul trucks, telehandlers, and wheeled loaders. The results showed that bulldozer operators consistently had the highest noise exposures, ranging from a NIOSH REL (Recommended Exposure Limit) dose of 844% to 25,836% and an OSHA PEL (Permissible Exposure Limit) dose of 139% to 1,397%.

DEVELOPMENT of the electron microscope has permitted man to examine many small objects that could not be resolved by the light micro-scope. Diffraction, spherical aberration, and chromatic aberration are the main factors that limit resolution to about two-tenths micron with the light microscope. No matter how perfectly a light microscope is constructed and operated, it cannot possibly resolve points separated by less than two-tenths micron. Rapid development following World War II has produced many electron microscopes capable of 20 A resolution. Fibrous inorganic minerals are well suited for electron microscopic study. Many micrographs of chrysotile have been published, but electron microscopic study of the amphiboles has been somewhat neglected. New techniques in sample preparation have simplified the study of fibrous material. Ultrasonic energy has been very helpful in sample dispersion. This publication contains a representative group of electron micrographs of natural inorganic fibers that have industrial value. These fibers commonly are referred to as the asbestiform minerals. The Bureau hopes that the knowledge gained through electron microscopy and other scientific study of the natural inorganic crystalline fibers eventually will lead to the production of synthetic fibers that will satisfy the requirements of industry.

"With a view of elucidating the role of glutathione (GSH) in the biochemical pathways of the chromate-exposure related carcinogenesis, we carried out electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopic investigations of the chromate-GSH redox reactions. The ESR measurements, employing spin-traps, provide evidence for the involvement of the glutathione (GS•) radical, as well as an isolable Cr(V)-glutathione intermediate. These results indicater a new mechanism for the reduction of chromate by GSH in cellular environment and help understand the (unexpected increase in Cr(VI)-induced DNA strand breaks at elevated GSH levels.We report here indirect electron spin resonance (EGR evidence for the involvement of the glutathionyl (GS) radical and direct evidence for a Cr(V) intermediate in the reactions of glutathione ¬(GSH) with chromate for the first time.. This work was undertaken to clarify the biochemical pathway of the reduction of chromate by GSH, since this reduction process is thought to be a critical step in the pathogenesis of the chromate-exposure related carcinogenesis. This follows from the literature reports which show that (a) Cr(VI)compounds have been proven to be carcinogens in laboratory animals as well as in human studies2-4, (b) Cr(VI) and not Cr(III) compounds are mutagenic 5-7, (c) Cr(VI) and not Cr(III) compounds can penetrate cell membranes 8.9 (d) the final state of Cr(VI) in cellular reductions is Cr(III)', (e) by itself chromate (or Cr(VI)) cannot be directly mutagenic since Cr(VI) is known not to interact with isolated DNA under physiological conditions 10, suggesting the significance of Cr(VI).reduction processes. One of the major reductants in cellular environments is thought to be the GSH, both outside and inside the ce11s 11-13. Other evidence for the role of GSH in the chromate toxicity is seen from recent studies showing that exposure of hamster cells to non-toxic levels of added selenite increases the levels' of GSH as well as the Cr(VI)-induced DNA strand beaks 14, and thatsuch DNA strand breaks in hepatocytes also change in direct proportion to their GSH content 15,16. These observations wereinterpreted as implying that the reduction of chromate by GSH, to some reactive intermediate is an important step in the chromatecarcinogenicity 15,16. This paper describes the methods and equipment developed at the Bureau's Experimental Oil-Shale mine near Rifle, Colo., for placing men in position to scale loose rock from the walls, pillars, and roofs of high stopes or rooms. The equipment developed at Rifle has application not only in oil-shale mining but in most of the country's underground limestone mines and in the exploitation of other mineral deposits mined in high stopes by room-and-pillar methods. Equipment in use at Rifle includes: 1. A boom-type scaling rig with a self-leveling platform constructed on a small "cat"-mounted crane. Men working from the platform on this machine can efficiently scale mine walls and roofs 27 feet above the floor. 2. A conventional fork-lift truck modified to provide a remotely controlled working platform from which men can scale to heights 27 feet above the mine floor. The platform on this unit is larger than on the boom-type rig and allows the men to inspect larger areas of the mine wall from a single setting of the machine. 3. A third rig, consisting essentially of a platform mounted on a tele-scoping tower, designed and built to elevate men 65 feet above the mine floor. Versatility of this machine permits men to work from the platform at heights of 5 to 65 feet. In the operating position, the unit requires a minimum clearance of 25 feet. In the nonoperating position the tower of the machine folds to an over-all height of 15 feet 10 inches to permit travel through haulageways. 4. An industrial gun, lightweight scaling bars, and mechanical scalers, which have been tried for removing loose rock from the mine walls with varying degrees of success.

"The Generic Mineral Technology Center on Respirable Dust was established in August 1983, at the request of the Bureau of Mines, to conduct research that affords ""...each miner the opportunity to work underground during the period of (his/her) adult working life without incurring any disability from pneumoconiosis or any other occupational disease"". The Center consists of the Mining and Mineral Resources Research Institutes (MRI) of The Pennsylvania State University (PSU) and West Virginia University (WVU) in association with the MRIs of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the University of Minnesota (UMN). (FIGURE 34) Michigan Technological University (MTU) is also affiliated with the Center in the area of diesel particulates.The Center brings together experts concerned with particles causing potentially disabling or fatal diseases including pneumoconiosis (""black-lung""), silicosis, and asbestosis. The latter is of deep concern not just to workers in the mineral sector of the economy but also to the general populace. The primary goal of the Center is to reduce the incidence and severity of respirable dust disease through advancing fundamental understanding of all aspects of respirable dust associated with mining and milling, and the interaction of dust and lungs. The research program of the Generic Mineral Technology Center explores these scientific, engineering or medical concerns with the objective of refining existing strategies and developing new respirable dust control techniquesand technology that are consistent with the fundamental dust-lung interaction processes that lead to mine worker disability. The objective of this investigation was to synthesize and investigate the properties of a high-temperature refractory material based on a combination of boron, silica, and magnesium. A magnesium-thermic reaction was used for the synthesis. X-ray examination of the product indicates that the crystalline portion of the composition is a combination of magnesium borides, magnesium silicate, and magnesium orthoborate. Chemical analysis of a representative sample shows, in weight-percent, boron 17.6, silicon 23.9, magnesium 17.8, and chromium 0.5. The balance is largely oxygen. The composition is resistant to high temperatures under oxidizing conditions and is stable in water, hydrochloric acid, and hydrogen. It has a low density (less than 3 grams per cubic centimeter) and a hardness value in the range of quartz. It has a melting point above 1,700° C. and can be hot-pressed to shape in the temperature range between 1,200° and 1,350° C. The properties described in this paper indicate that the material may have some uses as a high-temperature refractory, and because of its boron content it may have some value as a thermal-neutron-absorption material.

Syria is a federation of States under French mandate , comprising the Republic of Syria , the Lebanese Republic or Great Lebanon ( Grand Liban ) , the State of the Alouites , and the Djebel Druse Territory . Beirut is the center of government for the whole area , about 60,000 square miles . Syria is essentially an agricultural country . There is little manufacturing ; and with the exception of the production of asphalt and salt , the mineral industries have not yet risen to commercial importance . Whether this condition is due to a dearth of workable deposits or merely to insufficient exploration is not apparent . The mineral resources , as reported by various authorities , include asbestos , asphalt rock , bitumen , chromite , coal , copper , gold , gypsum , iron , lead , magnesite , manganese , marble and other building stones , nickel , ocher , pandermite ( a hydrous borate of calcium) , petroleum , phosphate rock , pyrite , salt , silver , sulphur , tin , and titanium ( ilmenitic beach sands ) .

In an effort to reduce Noise Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL) in the mining industry, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is conducting research to develop noise controls for mining equipment whose operators exceed the Permissible Exposure Level (PEL). The process involves three steps: 1) Noise source identification (NSI), 2) development of noise controls, and 3) evaluation of the developed noise controls. For the first and third steps, microphone phased array measurements are typically conducted and data are processed using the conventional beamforming (CB) algorithm. However, due to the size and complexity of the machines, this task is not straight forward. Furthermore, because of the low frequency range of interest, i.e., 200 Hz to 1000 Hz, results obtained using CB may show poor resolution issues which result in inaccuracy in the noise source location. To overcome this resolution issue, two alternative approaches are explored in this paper, namely the CLEAN-SC algorithm and a variarion of an adaptive beamforming algorithm known as Robust Capon Beamformer (RCB). These algorithms were used along with the CB algorithm to process data collected from a horizontal Vibrating Screen (VS) machine used in coal preparation plants. Results with the array in the overhead position showed that despite the use of a large array, i.e., 3.5-meter diameter, the acoustic maps obtained using CB showed "hot spots" that covered various components, i.e., the screen deck, the side walls, the I-beam, the eccentric mechanisms, and the electric motor. Thus, it was not possible to identify which component was the dominant contributor to the sound radiated by the machine. The acoustic maps obtained using the RCB algorithm showed smaller "hot" spots that in general covered only one or two components. Nevertheless, the most dramatic reduction in "hot" spot size was obtained using the CLEAN-SC algorithm. This algorithm yielded acoustic maps with small and well localized "hot" spots that pinpointed dominant noise sources. However, because the CLEAN-SC algorithm yields small and localized "hot" spots, extra care needs to be used when aligning the acoustic maps with the actual pictures of the machine. In conclusion, use of the RCB and the CLEAN-SC algorithms in the low frequency range of interest helped pinpoint dominant noise sources which otherwise would be very hard to identify.

A new type of apparatus for prerefining molten blast furnace iron and to reduce the cost of subsequent steelmaking consists of a funnel - shaped device lined with firebrick into which a horizontal stream of molten pig iron is directed tangentially at the top . The rotary motion thus induced causes the stream to flatten itself upon the wall and flow in a spiral path to the outlet ; thus , the device was termed " vortex cone .' Oxygen and other refining agents are impinged upon the flowing metal in the cone where reaction is facilitated by the large metal surface exposed and the turbulent flow pattern . Experiments with water in 1 - foot - diameter funnels provided an idealization of the flow patterns to be expected with molten iron . A brick - lined reactor 3 feet in diameter was built for desiliconizing molten pig iron in lots of 1 to 2 tons . At flow rates of 0.3 to 0.5 ton min - 1 (430 to 720 tons per day ) this apparatus was 64- to 90 - pct effective in desiliconization with oxygen efficiencies of 19 to 41 pct . Detailed experiments to develop basic engineering data are underway , and adaptation of this principle to other reactions and reactants is planned .

In recent years there has been no loss of life from fires in the underground mines of the Lake Superior district, but numerous minor fires and several serious ones involving loss of property and production have occurred. The iron-ore-producing companies recognize that well-equipped mine rescue stations are a valuable asset against the ever-present ranger of mine fires or the possibility of hazardous atmospheric conditions underground. Prompt action by trained and properly equipped rescue teams is recognized as the prime essential in saving lives, property, and production when fires occur. To achieve this purpose, the mining companies have provided themselves with mine rescue equipment and maintain trained mine rescue crews. This circular describes how one progressive company has provided, maintained, and improved upon such protection for its underground iron-ore mines on the Marquette and Menominee iron ranges of Michigan's upper peninsula. SUMMARY The central mine rescue station of The Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co. at Negaunee, Mich., has provided the company's mines with competent and well-equipped mine rescue teams. The new central mine rescue station at the Mather mine "B" shaft has the distinction of having underground training facilities provided as a part of the station. The company maintains the largest trained force in mine rescue in the Lake Superior district, and mine rescue training is employed as a part of the accident-and fire-prevention program. One of the most important results has been the promotion of closer cooperation and understanding between the management and the workmen. In addition to the service rendered to company mines, the station and its personnel have given assistance to others. The station and its equipment have also been used for training several nearby community volunteer fire departments. This mine rescue station and its personnel have been a dependable and valuable asset to the community in which it is located.

I have been asked to speak briefly about recent progress in the mining industry of the United States, and to touch on the general advancement of en- gineering science as applied to mining. By recent, I shall mean within the past 20 or 30 years. Such a period includes a great many of the changes which are of particular interest to the present generation of engineers, and the undergraduates of today will hardly turn back farther than the beginning of the present century in their study of develop- ment of methods and processes. Also, my own professional life spans this period, and I have seen or have been aware of most of these developments as they were taking place. In my review of developments, for the sake of simplicity and clarity, I shall deal separately with improvements in metal mining, coal mining, mechanical and electrical machinery for mines, metallurgy, petroleum engineering, and safety practices. Under each of these headings I have set down what appear to me to be the outstanding changes brought about during the past 2 or 3 decades. Other points will occur to other engineers; I do not represent that the following re- view is complete; it is only intended to be suggestive. In general, improvements in mining and metallurgical practices have come gradually, the charges being effected little by little, simultaneously in widely scattered places, and through the experience and inventive genius of many men. These changes have has small beginnings, and are generally the cumulative result of many steady and unsensational progressions, which still continue. What we today might be inclined to consider the culmination of a series of betterments in mining is, of course, but an instantaneous phase of developments which will continue in the future at even a more rapid pace than they have in the past. We are looking at but a flesh of a moving picture, with an endless reel to come after we finally leave the theatre. Behind all the changes in the mineral industry, the driving force has been the increasing demand of an expanding population for more metals and minerals with which to advance civilization. "This paper presents an analysis of the dynamics of bit wear on the productivity of the continuous miners. Two field surveys have been carried out. The first survey was to assess the impact of bit wear on productivity and production cost. The second survey was to study the wear characteristics of the cutting tool (i.e. magnitude, forms, and mechanisms of bit wear). Primary factors affecting bit wear is identified and laboratory experiments were carried out to study the effects of some of these primary factors on wear in detail. Results indicate that bit wear has a significant effect on the productivity of the continuous miners. Furthermore under the severe geologic conditions (i.e. cutting rock partings and roof and floor rocks) bit wear not only hampers the productivity, but also increases the production cost due to a higher number of bit consumption. This study also indicated that bit wear accelerates beyond 20% of the conical height loss which corresponds to 7% of the weight loss. This increase rate of wear is an indicative of higher abrasion between bit body and cutting material, resulting in a more dusty environment.IntroductionThe high demand for coal production has increased the need for mechanized coal cutting in underground coal mines. Continuous miners have been used in the United States of America for nearly four decades and now presently more than 2000 are in operation. Almost half of the underground coal production of the country is by continuous miners. Today, competition in the coal industry has increased, due mainly to market conditions and legal restrictions, thus placing an emphasis on production, efficiency, and safety. The use of continuous miners has resulted in the generation of respirable coal dust which causes black lung in mine workers. On the other hand, bit wear presents a serious problem as it affects productivity and economy.Much research in the put has been done on energy requirements and mechanism of energy dissipation for ideal rock fragmentation in the cutting process. Recently, dust hazards in underground coal mines as a result of coal cutting has been a great concern to mining engineers as well as environmentalist of the country. In past, much emphasize has been given to fragmentation mechanics (Khair et al, 1989), dust generation due to regrinding (Khair and Xu, 1991) and dust generation due to bit wear (Khair, Xu. and Ahmad, 1992). These studies concluded that dust concentration increased considerably after a bit weight loss of 7% and thereafter the bit should be replaced. Thus, legal restriction by the Mine Health and Safety Administration for the respirable dust concentration in underground might be a factor deciding the level or rate of production using continuous miners. While efforts in research are on reducing dust generation, it is also important and relevant to study bit wear in more detail.Bit wear is affected by three major groups of parameters: (1) machine operating parameters, (2) insitu conditions and (3) properties of rock. Again, past studies have shown that depth of cut, material of tool, position of water jet and velocity of the rotating drum are very important machine operating parameters. The content of the rock/coal material is important as bit wear is usually due to abrasion or adhesion. Diffusive wear becomes dominant only when the temperature exceeds the sensitive range i.e critical temperature. Mechanical tools have indicated that a rise in temperature is a function of drum velocity, properties of cutting material (rock or coal) and properties of tool. Bit wear due to chemical reaction and oxidation art almost negligible in coal cutting."

The Helium Research Center, Helium Activity, Bureau of Mines, is presently engaged in a critical examination of all of the PVT data on helium that appear in the literature. The long-range objective is the development of a single equation of state for helium that will allow all of the thermodynamic properties to be calculated and will reproduce all of the data within the accuracy with which the data are known. A preliminary objective is to obtain the best values of the second virial coefficients and to develop an equation that will reproduce the best values as a function of temperature. The method of treatment consists in expressing the PV product of a gas, for a given isotherm, in terms of a power series in either the pressure or the density and evaluating the constants by least squares solution. Associated with these functions whose coefficients have been evaluated by least squares, the following errors, or deviations, are of interest; the standard error of a single measurement; the standard error in each coefficient; and the standard error of the resulting function.

Potash is one of the principal foods and is necessary for the growth of most vegetables, grains, and fruits. For many years, this country depended entirely upon foreign sources for its supply of potassium compounds. However, during the last 15 years the domestic production of potash has gradually increased, as shown in table 1. 7/ Imports now supply only half of the American market. In 1936, the equivalent of 207,000 tons of K20 was imported, and 210,000 tons was produced domestically. In 1935, domestic consumption was approximately 420,000 tons of potash, a 57 percent increase over that for 1934 and surpassing previous peaks of 1928 and 1930.

The purpose of this investigation was to determine the effects of small amounts of cobalt in nickel on the tensile properties and hardness of representative types of austenitic stainless steels . Cobalt substitutions for nickel up to 2 weight - percent were made in types 302 and 309 stainless steels . Data were obtained at room temperature for tensile strength , yield strength , percentage elongation , percentage reduction in area , and hardness . In type 302 steels , tensile strength and hardness increased with increased percentages of cobalt , percentage elongation and reduction in area decreased , and yield strength showed little change . Property changes were largely due to the reduction of nickel content rather than to the addition of cobalt . In type 309 steels , only minor variations were observed for the properties investigated ; the effects of the relatively snall cobalt substitutions and nickel reductions were somewhat reduced by the higher total alloy content .

The Bureau of Mines has developed, on a laboratory scale, a superior Eluex-type circuit for eluting and recovering uranium from ion exchange resins. The improved circuit differs from conventional Eluex practice in that a stage of uranium solvent extraction is coupled with each stage of resin elution rather than the elution and solvent extraction operations being conducted separately. The new system reduces the number of stages, retention time, and resin inventory in the elution circuit to one-fourth or one-fifth that in existing circuits. The system is applicable to both resin-in-pulp and moving-bed-type ion exchange uranium recovery circuits.

Instrumental analysis is an indispensable tool to many phases of research on rare-earth metals and their compounds; therefore, the development of new and improved instrumental techniques is essential. This report describes an emission spectrometric analytical method using direct-current carbon-arc excitation of various rare-earth-oxide mixtures. Lanthanum oxide serves the dual purpose of an internal standard and a constant major constituent. The versatility of the method was demonstrated by three different applications: (a) Analysis of complex rare-earth concentrates; (b) determination of impurities in high-purity rare-earth oxides; and (c) detection of rare-earth elements in other types of matrices, such as those resulting from beneficiation of rare-earth ores. The average error of analysis in the concentration range of 0.2 to 10.0 percent was 14.6 percent for a group of complex synthetic mixtures of rare-earth oxides. An average error of analysis in the concentration range of 0.05 to 0.50 percent was 21 percent for a group of high-purity rare-earth oxides.

The development of systems for location of miners who have become entrapped following a mine disaster has been one of the major research goals in the Bureau of Mines. This study details the preliminary development of such a system. Current technologies for locating trapped miners from the surface are either simple direction finders or time difference pulse systems that have accuracy limitations. Developing technologies using full vector field measurements at several receiving points are currently being studied. The necessity of measuring field strength with great accuracy can be a drawback in these systems. A system that operates with continuous wave radio signals, whose phase differences can be measured accurately even in weak signal conditions, greatly improves the location accuracy. A microcomputer would be used in conjunction with the system, to gather and manipulate the data to automatically pinpoint the location of the trapped miner. Comparison of this system with existing technology indicates a favorable accuracy/complexity ratio for the phase difference of arrival technique.

According to reports received by the United States Bureau of Mines, Department of Commerce, as of January 1, 1929, there were 2,205 cracking units completed or being built in the United States, with a total daily charging capacity of 1,476,874 barrels. A similar survey of a year ago showed 2,334 units of 1,288,000 barrels total capacity. This indicates that despite a decrease in. number of units, there was a material increase in capacity. The year 1928 was, in general, an important one for the cracking branch of the industry. Gasoline consumption reached record levels, prices were higher than in 1927, and it is probable that in the late months of the year the cracking plants were operating very close to capacity.
