To determine the characteristics of a mineral deposit, the usual practice is to take samples, analyse the properties of those samples and infer the characteristics of the deposit from these properties. This analysis can be done using statistical methods. In the present work we are concerned with two types of statistical approaches, classical statistics and spatial statistics. If one uses classical statistics to represent the properties of the sample values, the assumption is made that the values are realizations of a random variable. The relative positions of the samples are ignored, and it is assumed that all sample values in the mineral deposit have an equal probability of being selected. The likely presence of trends, zones of enrichment, or pay shoots in the mineralization, is ignored. The fact that two samples taken close to each other are more likely to have similar values than if taken far apart is also not taken into consideration. In contrast, spatial statistics will be used if one chooses to consider that the sample values are realizations of random functions. On this hypothesis, the value of a sample is a function of its position in the mineralization of the deposit, and the relative position of the samples is taken into consideration. The similarity between sample values is quantified as a function of the distance between samples and this relationship represents the foundation of spatial statistics. There are few situations where classical statistics can be used. The assumption that all sample values in the mineral deposit have an equal likelihood of being represented will be satisfied only if the sample values are randomly distributed, or if the sample positions are random. Sample values are in fact never randomly distributed within a mineral deposit. Further- more, geologists usually avoid taking samples at random (random sampling), as it is correctly accepted that samples located on a regular grid, or approximately on a regular grid, give more information than randomly located samples. In practice, classical statistics should be used only in the early stages of exploration, when the number of samples available is relatively small and the distances between samples are large. In these circumstances, and whenever the information available is not sufficient to permit the use of spatial statistics, application of the methods described in this chapter is justified.

The utilization of software is now inherent to virtually every activity along the mining value chain. However, apart from the software survey done by Gibbs in the 1990s and work on the extent of diffusion of information and communication technology (ICT) in the South African platinum sector by Mugodi and Fleming in 2003, the nature and extent of software utilization in the South African mining industry has never been evaluated. The Mine Planning, Optimisation and Valuation (MPOV) Research Group in the School of Mining Engineering, University of Witwatersrand, therefore initiated a project to collate and analyse the current utilization of software in the South African mining industry. This was done through the development of a web-based database of the relevant software. Snowball sampling was used to collect the data because the South African mining industry is diverse and software utilization is fragmented across and within the sectors of the industry. The data was then organized into distinct categories so that the information from a variety of sources could be evaluated on the same basis. A beta version of the database can be accessed online through a user-friendly front-end platform at http://db.mining.wits.ac.za. The database is expected to help at least 13 educational institutions with decisions on facilities and training that are vital to the education of mining and mining-related professionals. Exploration, mining, and consulting companies will also benefit from information in the database relating to availability and useful combinations of software solutions. The database is also strategic to software providers by providing a better understanding of their respective relative market share along the mining value chain. An analysis of the data collated in this research shows that about 77% of the software users are mining companies, 17% are consulting companies, 3% are mineral exploration companies, and the rest are software providers and educational institutions. The software used in the South African mining industry is largely provided by Gemcom Software International, MineRP Solutions, and MRM Mining Services. CAE Mining, who in 2010 acquired the Datamine Group providing Datamine software, is also widely acknowledged as a major software supplier in South Africa, but data from them had not been obtained at the time of producing the beta version of the database due to proprietary constraints. The load-compression characteristics of mine supports are usually evaluated by means of relatively rapid tests, whereas in the mine they are subjected to much slower strain-controlled compression. The effects of slow strain rates on the load-bearing properties of mine supports were explored by means of straincontrolled tests on model timber packs and timber-filled steel telescopic props. It is shown that the load-compression characteristics of these supports are considerably influenced by the rate at which they are compressed. The species of timber influences the behaviour, but to a relatively minor extent. Preloaded supports are shown to lose a significant proportion of their preload by relaxation.

The objective of this paper is to present some results of laboratory experiments during the investigation of stress-strain characteristics of Carboniferous sandstones at dynamic loading. During these experiments increasing frequency and the constant amplitude of dynamic loading and/or constant frequency at different amplitude of dynamic loading were applied. A fundamental model, which considers the subprocesses of particle collection by bubbles in flotation, is applied to two comprehensive flotation surveys in the rougher stages of C3 concentrator, PT Freeport Indonesia. The flotation surveys focused on the collection of: ? cell-by-cell and size-by-size metallurgical, ? cell hydrodynamic, and ? pulp and surface chemistry information. The two surveys were conducted at significantly different feed tonnages, giving rise to significantly different feed particle size distributions, pulp densities and mean pulp residence times. A series of model simulations are performed with the aim of quantifying changes in copper recovery, on both a size-by-size and unsized basis, with changes in values of the hydrodynamic parameters and hydrophobicity of the copper sulfide mineral. This was carried out in an effort to identify the most promising route to increase overall copper recovery in roughing. It was found that by increasing the hydrophobicity of the copper sulfide mineral surfaces it became possible to optimise cell hydrodynamics, which targeted increased fine (-12 µm) copper sulfide mineral recovery but without adversely affecting coarse (+150 µm) copper sulfide mineral recovery.

The dual-electrode DC arc furnace, an alternative design using an anode and cathode electrode instead of a hearth anode, was studied at small scale using computational modelling methods. Particular attention was paid to the effect of two key design variables, the arc length and the electrode separation, on the furnace behaviour. It was found that reducing the arc length to brush arc conditions was a valid means of overcoming several of the limitations of the dual-electrode design, namely high voltages and arc deflection.

A study was initiated and solutions implemented to address the root causes of a 30%?40% lower than predicted product yield achieved at a Mpumalanga coal mine. A holistic MRTM approach, which focused on improving exploration, geological sampling and analysis, geological modelling, planning, mining, and beneficiation practices, was used. The study indicated that deviations in the planned versus actual yields at the DMS plant were caused mainly by incorrect geological yield predictions, high and variable levels of dilution, and near-dense material, as well as the textural properties of the ore. High titania slag is produced by the smelting of ilmenite and a suitable carbonaceous reductant in electric furnaces. Currently liquid slag is cast into large blocks, which take about 10 days to cool down before they can be crushed, milled and classified into two final products. The two products, chloride and sulphate grade slag, are differentiated according to their size. Granulation of titania slag has been identified as a possible alternative to the conventional block route. This paper discusses some of the work carried out at Exxaro Research and Development to investigate both wet and dry granulation of titania slag.

During the course of 2011 the nationalization of mines emerged as one of the most contentious and emotive political issues under review. Some four years after the African National Congress electoral conference held in Polokwane, which had led to a change of leadership within the country's ruling party, elements within the ruling party's youth league, which had been virulently supportive of the change in leadership, turned on the incumbent President, using the mining question as its rallying call. At issue was the expressed perception that mining has, since the country's democratization, not delivered the anticipated benefits to the population as a whole, continues to be the preserve of the capitalist element of the South African community, and is therefore in need of radical reform. Aspersions were made that transformation within the industry had failed dismally and that mining companies had not delivered against their commitments to the Mining Charter and social and labour plans. The debate became extremely vocal and heated, evoked dramatic and emotive opinions, and vigorous skirmishes on the matter were fought in the media over much of 2011 and into 2012.

South Africa holds approximately three-quarters of the world?s viable chromite ore resources and dominates the global production of ferrochrome. Albeit completely unintended, small amounts of Cr(VI) are formed during ferrochrome production. Certain Cr(VI)species are regarded as carcinogenic, hence making the treatment of some ferrochrome waste materials necessary. In this paper, the Cr(VI) treatment strategies currently employed by the South African ferrochrome producers are investigated by means of a literature review and a questionnaire survey. From the discussion, it is evident that various treatment strategies are available to deal with Cr(VI)-containing waste in the ferrochrome industry. However, by far the most commonly applied treatment strategy remains the aqueous reduction of Cr(VI) with ferrous iron. The advantages and the correct application of this strategy, together with the disadvantages and pitfalls, are argued. Innovative improvements on historic practices are also discussed

The use of backfill has important environmental control implications which, although frequently overlooked, can be both beneficial and problematical. Where backfill is widely used, the reduction in stope heat load and improved air utilization influence the overall mine ventilation and refrigeration requirements significantly. A programme of work examining in detail all the environmental consequences of backfilling is currently underway at the Environmental Engineering Laboratory of the Research Organization of the Chamber of Mines. This paper gives an overview of the work and presents some findings. In so doing, the environmental implications to be considered when backfilling are highlighted.

A method of estimating the percent solids in the discharge from a grinding mill is described and tested on both pilot and industrial scale. It involves the use of energy and mass balances around the mill discharge sump, requiring measurements of the flowrate and density from the sump together with temperatures of all streams flowing to and from the sump. Accurate estimates of the dynamic variation of mill discharge percent solids are made available, provided that occasional manual sampling of the stream is done to cope with drift in instrumentation. The use of a computer in this application was essential; the various advantages associated with its use are discussed. It is anticipated that this estimate of discharge density can be controlled at a set point by manipulation of the water fed to the mill, resulting in significant decreases in specific power consumption and media consumption.

Aluminium AA1200 was laser alloyed with a combination of nickel and titanium diboride using different weight ratios. Chemical reactions took place with the formation of different phases. The characterization of the alloyed surfaces was carried out by x-ray diffraction (XRD), optical and scanning electron microscopes. The alloyed surfaces are composed of the initial phase of Al-Ni dendrites and eutectics of TiB2/Al and TiB2/Ni distributed on the initial phase. Experimental results obtained showed that Al-Ni intermetallics brought about a significant increase in the hardness property of Al; however, these intermetallics are highly brittle and prone to fail by brittle fracture or stress corrosion cracking when put in service. The addition of TiB2 brought about a reduction in the formation of the seintermetallic phases. A microhardness increase of over 10 times the hardness of the substrate was achieved. Many mines engaged in deeplevel gold mining in South Africa are experimenting with the use of tailings fills, or are implementing tailings backfilling programmes on a limited scale. The approach varies from mine to mine, depending on circumstances and available fill materials. Several mines are backfilling with a cyclone underflow product; the cyclone overflow is then combined with the balance of the tailings stream and directed to surface disposal. As the extent of backfilling increases, the proportion of the surface tailings stream composed of overflow material will rise, and the properties of the tailings requiring surface disposal will approach those of the cyclone overflow. As the latter will be finer, less permeable and possibly weaker than the total tailings currently being disposed, the design and operation of surface tailings dams will have to be modified. Dams may have to be designed with flatter outer slopes of a reduced maximum height. Lower rates of rise may be required and, as a consequence, larger disposal areas may be demanded. To offset the negative aspects is the fact that the quantity of tailings requiring surface disposal will be reduced. The paper explores the dam-building properties of two cyclone overflow products. It shows that although these materials are inferior in dam-building characteristics to the corresponding total tailings, their geotechnical proper- ties still fall within, or close to, the range of properties typical of gold tailings. Although the design and operation of tailings dams may have to be modified, existing technology is adequate to handle these changes.

Two backfill systems have been developed on West Driefontein, namely the centrifuge dewatered tailings system and the cyclone-classified tailings system. Modifications to the two systems since the publication of the original paper (Close and Klokow, 1985) are discussed in addition to the results obtained. Considerable experience has been gained from the operation of the centrifuge dewatering units as well as the placement of dewatered tailings in a difficult mine environment. The centrifuge dewatered tailings method has proved successful in the extraction of a highly stressed block of ground at No. 5A Sub-vertical Shaft. The utilization of backfill support in this area made it possible to dispose of a high-grade barrier pillar. This pillar was considered necessary prior to the introduction of backfill support. The recovery of the gold from this pillar made the use of dewatered tailings backfill cost- effective, despite high labour and maintenance costs. Current experience with the bagfilling method of placing cyclone- classified tailings indicates that it is viable and requires considerably less capital investment. Although expensive at present, it is envisaged that costs will decrease once cheaper bags and other forms of stope support are used. The placement of backfill in small-diameter sausage-type bags requires no change in mining cycle and allows the backfill to be placed close to the stope face. Both backfill systems are being expanded but preference is to be given to the cyclone-classified tailings system.

This paper describes the tunnel seismic reflective survey, which has been developed by the authors in order to detect the geological condition ahead of the tunnel face three-dimensionally using reflected seismic waves. In addition, the applicability and the accuracy of the result of this system has been validated by comparing with the geological observation results at the tunnel face and the result of the drill logging system, which was conducted simultaneously with this survey in order to predict the rock properties using the data acquired during drilling from the tunnel face by rotary percussion drilling. In dieser Arbeit werden Reflektionsseismische Tunneluntersuchtungen beschrieben, die von den Autoren entwickelt wurde, um die geologischen Eigenschaften am Tunnelstirnende dreidimensional an Hand reflektierter seismischer Wellen bei minimaler Unterbrechung der Arbeit zu untersuchen. Darüber hinaus wurde die Anwendbarkeit und Genauigkeit der mit diesem System erhaltenen Ergebnisse durch Vergleiche mit den Ergebnissen geologischer Beobachtungen am Tunnelstirnende sowie den Ergebnissen des Bohrlogsystems bewiesen. Das letztgenannte System wurde gleichzeitig mit dem hier genannten System eingesetzt, um die Gesteinseigenschaften mit Hilfe der Daten vorherzusagen, die beim Bohren von Probelöchern im Tunnelstirnende mit einer Drehschlagbohrmaschine erhalten wurden. Cet article décrit une méthode de prospection sismique de tunnel, développée par les auteurs, pour déterminer en 3 dimensions les conditions géologiques existant derrière le front de taille, au moyen d’étude et de mesure des ondes sismiques réfléchies dans le sous sol, et ce, avec un minimum d’arrêt des travaux d’excavation. En outre, l'applicabilité et l'exactitude des résultats de ce système ont été vérifiées, en comparant les résultats des observations géologiques effectuées au front de taille, avec ceux du log de forage qui a été effectué parallèlement à ce système, en vue de prévoir les propriétés de la roche, grâce aux données collectées au cours du forage d’un trou de sonde depuis le front de taille à l’aide d’une foreuse rotative à percussion.

In the upper part of the planned location of the portal of a highway tunnel, there was a steep rock cliff with several unstable rock blocks. It seemed that the risk of those rock blocks to fall was very high. The cut-out to stabilize the rock cliff was monitored with various measuring instruments to prevent the sudden fall of the rock blocks. This paper discusses the measurement of acoustic emission and interpretation of its result during excavation of the rock cliff. We calculated displacements by integrating the accelerogram twice in terms of time, and demonstrated that slight displacements can be calculated from the measured AEs. Dans la partie supérieure de l’emplacement prévu pour le portail d’un tunnel autoroutier, il y avait un escarpement rocheux raide avec plusieurs blocs rocheux instables. Le risque de chute de ces blocs semblait très élevé. Lors de la coupe pour stabiliser l’escarpement rocheux, le suivi a été effectué avec différents instruments de mesure pour éviter la chute brutale des blocs rocheux. Cette thèse présente les mesures d’émission acoustique (EA) et l’interprétation de leurs résultats pendant l’excavation de l’escarpement rocheux. Nous avons calculé des déplacements en intégrant l’accélérogramme deux fois par rapport au temps, et montré que de petits déplacements sont calculables à partir des EA mesurées. Im oberen Teil des geplanten Ortes des Stollenmundes eines Autobahntunnels gab es einen steilen Felsen mit mehreren instabilen Felsenblöcken. Die Gefahr schien sehr groß zu sein, dass diese Felsenblöcke einstürzen können. Beim Abbau um die Stabilisierung des Felsens wurde das Monitoring mit verschiedenen Messinstrumenten zusammengestellt, um den plötzlichen Verfall der Felsenblöcke zu verhindern. Das vorliegende Papier diskutiert die Akustische Emission und die Auslegung deren Ergebnisse während des Abbaus des Felsens. Wir berechneten die Verschiebungen durch zweimalige Integrierung der Accelerogrammen in Bezug auf die Zeit. Die dargestellten kleinen Verschiebungen können aus den gemessten akustischen Emissionen berechnet werden.
