Worker safety is an issue that transcends industries, whether it be mining, construction, manufacturing or even general office work. In the mining industry, safety and training are particularly important because mining is a dangerous occupation. Throughout the years, federal and state safety regulations have been written and revised to keep up with the changing technologies. And mine operators have installed their own safety and training programs. They have come to realize that a safe and healthy workforce has positive effects on productivity and profitability —not to mention avoiding the high costs of injury-related absenteeism.

Introduction Chloride leaching of sulfidic ores has been known about for 100 years. It is recognized as a highly efficient process to produce concentrated leach solutions. Despite this, chloride leaching found little practical application until recently because of the highly corrosive nature of concentrated chloride solutions. This situation changed with the advent of modern construction materials such as GRP, polypropylene, butyl rubber, etc. And in the past 20 years, research has burgeoned in the area of chloride hydrometallurgy. The research impetus stemmed from the belief that chloride leaching can provide an alternative to smelters for treating conventional copper concentrates. In addition, chloride leaching was thought to be suitable for on-site refining of copper at small tonnage operations located in remote areas. And chloride leaching was seen as a logical choice for treating unusual or complex concentrates that smelters could not handle. Underpinning these beliefs is the attraction of chloride-based hydrometallurgical processes for sulfidic ores. Sulfur is liberated in the environmentally acceptable elemental form rather than as sulfur dioxide. Consequently, sulfidic copper ores have received much attention. A review of Edmiston in 1984 describes 12 chloride-based processes. All managed to progress past the "laboratory beaker" stage of evaluation. In nine of these processes, copper is recovered electrolytically. Key features of these processes are summarized in Table 1. Table 1 shows that the processes must include a copper solvent-extraction step. Only these processes produce a clean copper electrolyte capable, with no further refining, of directly producing high quality cathode copper. The ICI/Elkem process is the exception here. The rest of these processes use o-hydroxyaryloxime reagents for the solvent extraction of copper and are constrained by the performance of these reagents. This is governed by hydrogen ion concentration (Equation 1). The practical result is that only relatively dilute copper solutions can be treated (Canmet, Phelps Dodge), or careful pH control or adjustment is necessary (Minimet Recherche, B.H.A.S.). This negates one of the attractive features of chloride leaching - its ability to produce very concentrated copper solutions, up to 40-45 gl-1. [ ] In all four processes using o¬hydroxyaryloxime extractants, solvent extraction transfers the copper from the chloride to the sulfate medium. To minimize cross-contamination of the two anions, the loaded organic solvent has to be scrubbed to remove the chloride ion. This paper addresses the challenges experienced by the designer and three government agencies during implementation of major improvements for the Turkey Creek Tunnel in Kansas City, Kansas. The tunnel serves as a vital stormwater conveyance system for upstream flood control. Major structural deficiencies were identified within the tunnel including complete loss of sidewall and invert. Without immediate attention, complete loss of the tunnel arch could lead to blockage and extensive remedial repairs under difficult conditions. Considering that tunnel flows must be maintained during construction, a phased design and construction process has been implemented to expedite stabilization of the erosion cavities followed by tunnel liner repairs.

In this paper, uniaxial compression tests were conducted on intact rocks and broken rocks that were reinforced by grouting, and the effects of grouting on the strength of broken rocks were analyzed. The results show that after grouting reinforcement, the bearing capacity of broken rocks with different lithologies increased, and their uniaxial compressive strength recovered by approximately 6%–16%. The results indicated that the stronger the rock, the smaller the strength recovery of the consolidated body formed after grouting. At the same time, using borehole camera observation and deep overburden strata separations, the fracture development characteristics of surrounding rocks of the gob-side retained entry were analyzed and divided into different regions. On this basis, a guided grouting method was proposed; that is, shallow hole grouting was first used in the plastic zone of the broken surrounding rocks to form the isolation layer, and then deep grouting holes were arranged in the elastic-plastic zone of the transition zone to guide the slurry flow to the shallow unfilled zone. Therefore, the broken surrounding rocks were reinforced into an integrated body and selfbearing capacity improved.

Many subsidence researchers in the U. S. have developed new empirical function methods to predict subsidence, or attempted to validate some empirical functions developed by foreign researchers for use in the U. S. An attempt is made in this paper to develop a new empirical function to predict a surface subsidence basin due to longwall mining. In the U. S., the emphasis of empirical methods for the subsidence prediction over longwall panels has been in large part on determining the profile functions for the major cross-sections of a subsidence basin. In this approach, the surface monuments are usually laid out along the major cross-sections and thus, the subsidence profiles developed are restricted for subsidence prediction along the major cross-sections. However in practice many monuments or surface structures for which subsidence prediction for damage evaluation is required, are not laid out along the major cross-section of the basin. In such cases, it is difficult to get either the empirical profile function for the cross-sections where these structures are located or to predict their subsidence based on the profile function developed for the major cross-sections. Therefore, there exists a strong need to develop a subsidence basin function with a reasonable degree of accuracy, which can be determined or confirmed by the data of scattered monuments on a surface basin. The same subsidence basin function can also be used for prediction of subsidence for any arbitrary points over a longwall panel. In 1982, He (1) proposed the clastic theory, for which he developed the basic differential equations describing the movement and deformation of overburden due to underground mining, and performed the selection of best solution for the equations. He found that the Weibull dietribution is the optimal solution. We are no longer short of viable Rare Earth deposits. As little as 2 years ago China mined and produced 97% ofthe world?s rare earths. Only a few deposits were in an advanced stage of exploration and development. Now Technical Metals Research (TMR) Gareth Hatch *5 reports that 347 deposits are being developed by 265 companies down from 440 on July 6th. Their Index of Advanced projects lists 45 projects in 14 countries. They will sustain the world for centuries to come and many good deposits are yet to be found. The problem is mining 14 elements in balance. Each of the deposits listing production in the chart has a unique set of minerals which they think will give them a cost advantage. Which of these will make it to production is a question. Most of the Advanced won?t be mined soon, but which ones? China is still in the driver?s seat in Light Rare Earth production (LREO) with one deposit with 35 million ton Baiyunebo deposit in Inner Mongolia which is part of a working iron ore deposit. The number of HREE deposits have been reduced and they attempting to eliminate unpermitted mines. This report will tell you what a Rare Earth is, how rare they are, why they are important, and where they are being developed which includes Australia, the United States, Africa, Greenland, Brazil and Canada.

An assessment of U.S. western hard-rock miners? noise exposures was conducted as part of a multi-year National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) survey of noise exposures in each sector of the mining industry. Noise from selected mining equipment and operator noise exposures were measured, analyzed, and tabulated for dissemination to the participating sites and are being used to direct NIOSH research and interventions to address the greatest noise hazards. Eighty-two noise dosimeter measurements were obtained, along with time-motion studies as the miners operated hard-rock mining machines. Ninety-six percent of the operators had daily noise doses that exceeded the Mine Safety and Health Administration?s permissible exposure level. The average gold miner dosages while operating the following equipment were: haul trucks - 261%, load-haul-dumps (LHDs) - 235%, single boom drills - 221%, bolters - 214%, and dual boom drills - 163%. The worst exposure level was a silver miner with a daily dose of 873%. Time-motion data showed that this miner?s exposure accumulated most rapidly while operating a jack-leg drill. These results will be used to help prioritize noise control development by NIOSH and other partners. Wound rotor motors are used in difficult mining applications where there is a need to start high inertia, hard starting loads while limiting inrush current They are recognized as robust and simple to control. This paper will cover the performance, specification, and important issues to be considered when applying medium voltage wound rotor motors in mining applications. Medium voltage grinding, crusher, and conveyor applications will be discussed. Specifically covered are motor efficiency, speed range, and rotor control. Crane motors often have wound rotor construction, but their load cycle and ratings are outside the scope of this paper.

Powerful, easy to manipulate, ventilation modeling software is readily available to most mining engineers. Too often when preparing an initial ventilation model, engineers will go overboard in their design, creating a complex model with hundreds of branches. When, in practice, the creation of a less complicated ?to the point? model, containing a few well-constructed branches, would have delivered the same results. In this paper the author will demonstrate, by using actual feasibility report examples, that when designing a ventilation model, engineers should make more use of the K.I.S.S. (?Keep It Simple, Stupid?) Principle. As mining industry consultants we must continue to improve on, and deliver timely and cost-effective results to our customers.

A recurrent concern in mining operations is how to deal with the large volumes of fresh water used which in turn generates large volumes of effluents that have to be treated. Water treatment can focus in one of two main strategies: treat the effluent as it is produced, or use a simulation tool to optimize water use in the process and reduce volume of effluents, contaminants concentrations, operational costs, and so on. This article shows a successful tool developed in Matlab-Simulink® that allows modelling a mining process and simulating potential improvements to evaluate the results. This tool has been proven in Cu-Mo operations and recently it has been used in poly-metallic operations. This article reviews the 4 Key Steps required to achieve our goals: a) Elaboration and verification of the mining Operation?s Block Diagram, based on a field survey; b)Model construction and input flows and qualities in selected streams; c)Model Validation and Simulation of new alternatives like recirculation, changes in reagents and dosage, partial treatment, flows merges/separation, and others; d)Development of the Optimal Solution which consists on determining the CAPEX and OPEX.

INTRODUCTION The entire scope of new facilities for Lake Mead Intake No. 3 includes a sub-merged intake structure, a deep tunnel beneath Lake Mead, a tunnel access shaft, Intake Pumping Station No. 3, and connections to an existing intake and water treat-ment facility, as shown in Figure 1. In March 2008 Vegas Tunnel Constructors (VTC), a joint venture of Impregilo SpA and SA Healy were awarded a $447m Design-Build contract by SNWA for a section of this work (Contract 070F 01 C1), including the 185 m deep tunnel access shaft, the 4.7 km long, 6.1 m diameter tunnel and the submerged intake. Arup, supported by Brierley Associates, is the Design Engineer for VTC. The scope of the work is shown in Figure 2. This paper will describe the design and construction on this contract, with a focus on the access shaft which is the most complete section of the work. The shaft is being sunk using drill-and-blast methods with the finallining placed as excavation proceeds. The shaft passes through a major fault zone, and extensive pre-excavation grouting for water control is required for much of the depth of the shaft.

The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) is adding a third fan to operate in parallel with, and supplement, its two existing main fans. An engineering analysis conducted in 1995 identified the need for improved system availability and efficiency. The WIPP, located near Carlsbad, New Mexico, is a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Carlsbad Area Office facility designed to permanently dispose of U.S. defense-generated transuranic waste in a deep bedded salt deposit. Engineers at the WIPP performed a feasibility analysis for either modifying, supplementing, or replacing its two main mine fans. Since the centrifugal fans were installed in 1988, multiple operational and performance concerns have been identified. A comprehensive engineering study was conducted (McDaniel, et al., 1997) to: identify and quantify operational concerns, evaluate possible alternatives, and recommend an optimum solution. The study indicated that adding a third single-duty centrifugal fan similar to the two existing fans, and equipping that fan with Inlet Van Controls (IVCs) was the best choice. This alternative provided the most desirable combination of operational readiness, and improving system performance. The fan installation project accommodates several operational and scheduling constraints. WIPP is scheduled to receive waste in May 1998. This milestone is proceeded by an operational readiness review. Fan installation could not be allowed to compromise the WIPP's ability to declare facility readiness and had to minimize operational disruptions during the system tie-in. All engineering for the project is completed and physical modifications started in July 1997. The project was completed in 1998.

The objective of the experiment was to investigate the efficiency of hindered-settling column in recovering carbon from anthracite. Two types of Korean anthracites were prepared for feed materials. Each sample was crushed and classified by size, and washability analyses were performed. Separation efficiency was evaluated under various operating conditions using a laboratory scale hindered settling column. Results showed that the carbon recovery was higher for the smaller sizes, but the purity of the product was better for the larger sizes. In, overall, 2-0.21mm particles of 40-45 % ash could be processed into about 20 % ash products.

It is important to study the ventilation system in order to better design and control of the working environment in deep underground mines. With increasing depth, heat, and humidity performance may be reduced and impair the attention of workers. The purpose of this paper is to apply a complex; development-end model configured in the MULTIFLUX program, developed at the University of Nevada, Reno, USA. The MULTIFLUX development-end model template has been benchmarked against measurement results from two UK coal mines in previous studies. The present study is a test of MULTIFLUX application in a metal mine. The model incorporates the simulation of the air flow field in the drift and the auxiliary air duct; simultaneous heat and humidity transport from the drift wall; heat and mass exchange between the air in the drift and the ducts; and the evaporation of process water and/or condensation of vapor as governed by the psychometric conditions. The results are compared with field data, measured at the Lucky Friday Mine (LF) in Idaho, USA, an underground mine and also shown between the results from the MULTIFLUX-based model, and those from another program, Kduct, developed at the Kyushu University in Japan.. Based on X-ray phase analysis and exploratory experiments, a new technology was developed to recycle multiple valuable elements in spent Al2O3-based catalyst. The experimental results showed that after roasting at 750°C for 30 minutes at an Na2O:Al2O3 mol ratio of 1.2, the leaching recoveries of alumina, vanadium and molybdenum from the spent catalyst were 97.2%, 95.8% and 98.9%, respectively. Vanadium and molybdenum in sodium aluminate solution can be recovered by barium hydroxide and barium aluminate. The precipitation recovery of vanadium and molybdenum was 94.8% and 92.6%, respectively. Al(OH)3 is prepared from sodium aluminate solution using the carbonation decomposition process. The purity of Al2O3 is 99.9% after calcinations, and the recovery of alumina can reach 90.6% in the whole process. The Ni-Co concentrate was leached with sulfuric acid, and a nickel recovery of 98.2% and a cobalt recovery of more than 98.5% were obtained under the experimental condition of 30% (w/w) H2SO4, 80°C, a liquid: solid ratio of 8:1 (by weight), a reaction time of 4 hours and a stirring rate of 800 rpm.

Column flotation has been successfully implemented on a production scale in the Athabasca oil sands. In this application, bitumen is recovered and mineral matter is simultaneously rejected from a middling stream originating from a primary separation vessel. Exploiting the natural hydrophobicity of bitumen, the middlings streams have traditionally been processed utilizing conventional, mechanical flotation cells. Although these cells offer adequate bitumen recovery and mineral rejection rates, operating costs are high due to the required maintenance of the wetted mechanical components. In comparison, column flotation provides superior metallurgical performance while offering a lower maintenance demand. Both metallurgical and mechanical characteristics of column flotation are discussed to demonstrate the benefits of this technology for the recovery of bitumen from oil sands.

Phelps Dodge Mining’s Bagdad, AZ copper facility uses a large series of cone crushers and ball mills to reduce copper ore to very fine particles. The solids are mixed with water to create a slurry. Milk of lime is added to this slurry to raise the pH. Small amounts of reagents are also added, including a frother to make bubbles, as well as a collector chemical that causes the copper minerals to stick to those bubbles. This material is pumped to a series of froth flotation cells to concentrate the copper. Air is blown into the flotation cell tank and the pulp mixture is vigorously agitated. Rising bubbles carry the copper particles over the edge of the flotation tank. The bubbles break after they flow over the edge.

The 11th Annual Mineral Economics and Management Society (MEMS) conference was held April10-12, 2002, in Montreal, Quebec. It consisted of a series of technical sessions. Each paper addressed the economic issues that are related to the changes that many people believe are now required in the mining industry. Some of the papers were directed at how the mining industry will handle the changes that will be required in its philosophy and operations management. Of equal importance was whether the industry possesses the toolkit necessary to effect these changes and emerge stronger from its challenges.

Life-of-mine process simulation is an interdisciplinary effort and a useful means of thoroughly evaluating mining and minerals projects. Communication between geologists, mine planners, miners, metallurgists, and managers not only benefits each discipline but facilitates design of an efficient operation and allows for accurate forecasting of productions and cash flow. By focusing on the key areas: geology; mine design; waste dumps; stockpiles; metallurgy; weather data; tailings disposal; using contours, block models, mine plans, process flowsheets, design criteria, operating and control strategies, maintenance schedules, and operating costs to perform detailed daily simulation from start-up to shut-down; a comprehensive understanding for all disciplines is achieved. Construction of a METSIM model that includes all test work and project data from drill holes through net present value calculations brings the pieces together to achieve optimum process design, minimize operating problems and eliminate the term ?black box? from project meetings and discussions.

In late 1994, EPA and OSM acknowledged that efforts by any one agency or by the many different agencies to remedy the water quality impacts of decades of contamination from abandoned coal mine lands in Appalachia would not be successful if their disjointed efforts were not unified and if the local watershed organizations were not included. The result of the collaboration between EPA and OSM was the creation of a statement of mutual intent which was a pledge by government agencies, watershed organizations, and the industry to restore watersheds degraded by acid mine drainage from abandoned coal. The presenter will describe the evolution of this pledge from a paper promise to on-the-ground remediation projects.
