INTRODUCTION Design and development of new products generally proceeds through a phase of initial development and discovery based on the evolution of existing arts, followed by technical innovation and development based on both pure and applied research. The development of the mechanical tunnel boring machine (TBM) has followed a similar pattern, with the first machines closely resembling continuous coal miners. In general, however, the design of TBM's to date has been more a result of evolution and discovery than of new technical innovation, even though large sums of money have been spent on research and development. In particular, the results of experimental laboratory and field investigations have had little effect on tunnel boring machine design, and the better performance of TBM's today over those of 10 or 15 years ago, is due more to increased mechanical reliability and greater operating experience, than to improvements in penetration rates and rock fracture capability. The improvements made, have been mainly by the machine and cutter manufacturers who recognize the greater efficiency and economic advantage of utilizing large single row cutters with high load capacity along with large edge spacing. Are there any improvements to be made, therefore, in TBM performance without new and dramatic technological breakthroughs? Can TBM manufacturers design greater performance into their machines by a logical extension of the present art, and by applying what has been learned in the laboratory and field? Some, for example, believe that the kerf cutting system of boring rock is at, or close to, its opti¬mum and little improvement can be made in the present TBM concept.

He will review the engineering theory and work through an example to demonstrate the assumptions used in the standard do not inappropriately affect the CEMA rating system.

Located in Mojave, CA, The Soledad Mountain mine is an Open pit Heap-Leach gold Mine, which is operated by Golden Queen Mining Company LLC. under private capital. Open pit mining began in 2015 while full production was reached in 2016. The open pit mine feed a processing plant that can process more than 13K tons per day of ore which is sent to a heap leach pad. The Soledad Mountain project is a poly metallic deposit with Au and AG being recovered as payable metals. As the mine became bigger after moving to the east pit phases, Golden Queen was facing new challenges to control the production and accurately determine KPIs to improve/increase the production. To maximize returns and asset value, a new fleet management system (FMS) was adopted and implemented. The new FMS has enabled the mine to interconnect the different stages of the mining, as well as to recognize issues and implement the necessary corrections. With the associated increase in complexity in the process, the requirement of the ore control system to accurately predict ore feed characteristics is critical to maximizing metal recovery. Implementation of new daily and weekly plans were needed to ensure the ore delivery and meeting the tonnage goals, while allowed the equipment operators to better geolocate and to maximize the equipment production. These conditions alongside with Golden Queen’s drive to increase profitability and maximize net asset value has created challenges. These challenges are numerous and multifaceted. However, the ability to accurately route the material from the mine, is critical to site success and some of these challenges have been overcome by the adoption of the new FMS, the implementation of daily and weekly plans and upgrades in the ore control workflow. Examples of how the integration of the new systems allowed golden Queen to improve production strategy, are discussed in this article.

An increasing concentration of coal production, especially in the circumstances of intensive methane inflow makes the coal mine managing staff apply new techniques of safe mining. It paves also the way for scientists to develop new directions of investigations and implementation of state-of -the- art technical solutions. Simultaneously, it could be noticed that the funds assigned for expansive 'En situ ' investigation are continuously decreasing. Better and better results are reached when applying computer technique in calculations of the parameters of ventilation process. Recent theoretical and experimental investigations of air and gas (methane) flow in longwall areas with caving, combined with the implementation of methane drainage system allowed to create, a mathematical model and consequently to elaborate a computer supported numerical simulation of discussed phenomena. The mathematical model has been modified and the simulation program was prepared in such a way that the software is convenient for a user looking for an optimal solution. The paper presented the methodology of optimal choice of following parameters: - ventilation system - rate of flow through the wall. The procedure takes into consideration keeping a safe level of concentration methane in air flowing through the longwall as well as the criterion of maximum methane concentration within the methane drainage pipe line. Results of variant computer simulation regarding the longwall with caving are shown in graphs and tables.

Introduction Grinding is the reduction of ore and similar raw materials to particle sizes below the practical limits of commercial crushing ma¬chines. This size is about 36 in. (1 cm), in most cases, although some finer crushing machines are in regular use. The feed size to grinding machines may range upward to S in. in rod mills, and 12 in. or more in autogenous mills. The finest particle sizes produced in mineral processing operations result from grinding. Ordinary grinding of brittle materials is the result of impacting, rolling, and abrasion of heavy bodies, moving freely under the influ¬ence of gravity. These falling and rolling grinding bodies, which are usually of metal, must be much heavier and larger than the ore parti¬cles they break. This weight relationship is usually in excess of 100: 1. The sustained fall of the grinding bodies is obtained by placing them, together with the rock particles they grind, in a rotating drum or cylinder with horizontal axis, called a tumbling mill. The mill is nearly half full of grinding bodies and ore particles, which may be fed into one end and exit from the other through hollow trunnions which usually serve as the mill bearings. The mill lining must be thick to absorb wear and rough to prevent excessive slippage of the charge. The breakage of brittle rock or ore is accomplished by compression. The compression may be a rapid impact, from the fall and roll of a grinding ball, or it may result from the relatively slow and constrained motion as in a jaw crusher. Breakage by shear is a secondary result of the compressive motion. Ordinary rock has an extremely heterogenous structure with innumerable zones of weakness in which cracks, fractures, and breakages can form. When a rock is subjected to com¬pression it deforms. If the compressive force exceeds a certain critical value an incipient crack appears in the most fragile zones of weakness. This crack tip may first form on the particle surface or in its interior. When the first crack tip forms the compressive stresses immediately surrounding it flow to it, and this concentration of forces extends the crack and splits the rock. Other adjacent cracks may form during this extremely rapid process. Because of the nature of brittle particles, the work done in breaking them consists essentially of the work input required to compress them to the point at which the first crack tip forms. Breakage requires no appreciable additional energy input be¬yond that required for the deformation, since the stress energy already imported to the rock flows to the crack tip and extends it to breakage. Types of Tumbling Mills The general term tumbling mill includes the rod mill, ball mill, pebble mill, autogenous mill, and tube mill. It is of cylindrical or cylindro-conical shape and rotates about its horizontal axis. Rotational speed, liner type, and size and shape of tumbling media are selected to provide the desired operating conditions for the specific grinding application. "INTRODUCTION Successful management of megaprojects, meaning delivery within budget, on time and according to expectations, is a fundamental requirement. Many projects have been successful, some have not. This paper reviews megaprojects1, drawn from the author’s projects over the last 50 years, with “lessons-learned” and a summary of recommendations that, if implemented, would improve megaproject management and delivery. Characteristics of these projects are summarized – including outcomes related to key factors such as politics, management, organizational structure, contracting methods, cost estimates, risk and other elements. The projects include the Washington D.C. Metro, Boston Southwest Corridor, LA Metro, Toronto Rapid Transit Expansion Program, BART San Francisco, MARTA Atlanta, London Underground and the Washington State Highway megaprojects – including the SR520 Floating Bridge and the Alaskan Way tunnel. Other projects that illustrate successful, innovative management and contracting methods include the Madrid Metro (low-cost delivery), the Sydney Northside Storage tunnel (outturn cost, alliancing) and the Lake Mead tunnel (working in partnership, risk management). KEY ISSUES A characteristic of megaprojects is that their complexity increases exponentially with size (Reilly 2010, Galloway et al. 2012). These projects are very visible politically, have many stakeholders who must be satisfied and generally span many years and political election cycles. To be successful they must meet expectations, function efficiently, and be delivered under, at or close to budget and schedule. There is a widely-based perception that large, complex projects are always delivered late, over budget and with problems. Specific examples include projects such as Tren Urbano in Puerto Rico – $1.28 billion over initial budget (+133%), the Silver Line Transitway Project in Boston – $286 million over budget (+90%), the London Jubilee Line Transit Project – 2 years late and £1.4 billion (+67%) over budget, the Channel Tunnel Rail Project – £3.7 billion (+80%) over budget, Denmark’s Great Belt Link rail and road link (54% over budget), the 2003 Woodrow Wilson bridge tender in Virginia (72% over estimate) and Boston’s Central Artery Project – several billion (perhaps 100%) over what would have been a realistic initial budget and years late (Reilly 2001c, 2004a; Salvucci 2003)."

Vale is in the process of resuming mining in the lower 810 ore body (810 OB) below 4130L at Copper Cliff Mine – South Side. Production in the lower 810 OB had continued until it was temporarily ceased in 2017 to allow for the execution of activities associated with Copper Cliff Mine Phase 1 project. While mining the stopes in both the lower and mid part of the 810 OB, a seismic response was experienced that resulted in rockbursts and challenging mining conditions. The majority of the rockbursts experienced in the past were associated with stopes mined in a bottom-up mining sequence under a diminishing pillar situation between 3350L and 3540L. The current mining plan is comprised of both top-down and bottom-up mining fronts using a center-out chevron sequence of long hole open stopes to manage induced stresses. Numerical modeling assessments have been carried out to forecast the response of the rock mass due to the planned mining. Seismicity and stress induced damage surrounding excavations are anticipated, and areas requiring extra attention have been identified. A tactical approach is being used to prepare the area for production, including replacement of ground support elements that are damaged or have insufficient residual capacity, and installation of dynamic support in areas anticipated to experience bulking and/or dynamic loading that would exceed the current support system’s capacity. A series of monitoring programs are being put in place to confirm current conditions, and to monitor the response of the rock mass to proactively implement ground control tactics should the need arise. This paper provides a summary of the approach used to forecast, monitor, and manage the behavior of the 810 OB rock mass response to continued mining at depth.

As indicated in the introduction to this paper, it is a sequel to that which I gave to the last annual meeting in Atlanta in march. This paper goes further into aspects of crushing and screening, primarily from the standpoint of circuit control. There has been little published by equipment manufacturers on this subject and this is the first paper on crushing circuit control to be sponsored by Allis-Chalmers corporation. By proper control over the use of crushing energy, we will be able to produce finished products from feed materials uti¬lizing minimum capital for the lowest cost of production. The subject will be discussed as follows. Firstly, we will look briefly at what we are trying to accomplish; Secondly, what is presently available in the way of technology; Thirdly, we will look at a suggested new system of control which will best fit the parameters of the normal crushing and screening operation; As a conclusion, I will summarize the advantages of the new system.

Exports of crude gypsum from Mexico currently comprise about 60% of all domestic shipments, and about 25% of the imported material consumed in the U.S. wallboard industry. However, of growing importance are the domestic markets for calcined gypsum in Mexico including building plasters and wallboard, which account for 55% of the internal demand for natural mined material. This paper will examine the current trends in the production and trade of natural mined gypsum in Mexico and North America and the opportunities and threats that are facing existing and new suppliers in this changing market.

New Mexico ranks 2nd in uranium reserves in the U. S., which amounts to 15 million tons ore at 0.277% U3O8 (84 million lbs U3O8) at $30/lb (EIA, 2006). The most important deposit in the state is sandstone within the Morrison Formation (Jurassic) in the Grants district. More than 340 million pounds of U3O8 have been produced from these deposits from 1948-2002, accounting for 97% of the total production in New Mexico and more than 30% of the total production in the United States. Sandstone uranium deposits are defined as epigenetic concentrations of uranium in fluvial, lacustrine, and deltaic sandstones. Three types of sandstone uranium deposits are recognized: tabular (primary, trend, blanket, black-band), roll-front (redistributed, post-fault, secondary), and fault-related (redistributed, stack, post-fault). Several companies are planning to mine these deposits by in-situ leaching.

Technology development has played a crucial role in the minerals industry throughout history. The development of new technology allows mankind to produce metals and minerals at progressively lower cost of production in real terms, and therefore at progressively lower prices, improving their availability, accessibility and utilization worldwide. However, the developers of such technology are not guaranteed to reap the benefits from this effort: There is an expectation that technology developers will gain an advantage over their competitors. Is this a short-term benefit that results from a temporary cost or efficiency improvement, or is it a sustainable longer term "edge" that prevails even after metal or mineral price has been eroded by the implementation of a major step change technology? This issue is examined by reference to several case study examples in the copper industry. BACKGROUND The development and adoption of new technology has played a crucial role in the commodity minerals industry throughout history. As new, cost-efficient technologies are commercialized, the cost of production decreases, and this enables lower grade ore to be processed profitably. This in turn increases the availability and supply of the metal or mineral of interest, and ultimately (in a free market environment where the supply- demand balance determines price) inevitably decreases the metal or mineral price. This leads to the question: Why should mining companies invest in (new) technology development if the result is a decrease in the product price? The city and metropolitan area of Lyon provide an example of a city strategy adapted to the changing needs due to demographic and living standard trends. The Lyon Metro Line B with a length of 2.4 km is one of the strategic projects with regard to city planning and future mobility. The paper will highlight on this special area of application in singular diverse geology with sophisticated mechanized tunnelling technology.

LOCATION AND EXTENT OF BART TUNNELS The San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit District (BART) during the past six years has become the Owner of 23.5 miles of single-bore tunnels. The tunneling experience gained while working closely with our Engineer and Contractors in the design and construction of these major transit facilities provides a basis for our "Owners" viewpoint. The 23.5 miles of tunnels are divided into two categories. Fifteen and one-half (15-1/2) miles of tunnels were constructed in soft ground underlaying the downtown areas of San Francisco, Oakland and Berkeley. Eight (8) miles of tunnels were built in "hard ground" in the hills separating Oakland and Berkeley from Contra Costa County and in the San Francisco hills on the Mission Line. Location of tunnels within the BART system are shown on Figure 1. The tunnels comprise 15.7% of BART's 75-mile dual track system. Their 176 million dollar costs (excluding rail, electrification or ventilation features) are 12.4% of the system's total estimated cost of $1.4 billion. The tunnels constructed in soft ground were shield and boring machine driven with ground support provided by steel liner rings. The exterior diameter is 17 foot, 6 inches in the majority of tunnels; however, on two tunnels with a 500 foot radius of curvature, the diameter was 18 feet. BART awarded 14 contracts for soft ground tunneling. The work was accomplished under free air or compressed air depending upon the ground water and soil conditions, safety requirements, and considerations for protecting adjoining property from damage either from the de-watering operations or settlements due to excavation. Production scheduling of an open-pit mine is one of the most important steps in open-pit mining. The mine's production schedule defines the distribution of cash flows and, as a result, directly influences the net present value (NPV) and overall economic feasibility of a project. The need to plan and operate a mine with an optimum production schedule has been obvious for some time, but the methods used to obtain such a schedule have not been so obvious. The current practice is to do a trial and error analysis by hand. In an attempt to improve the way production scheduling is currently done, a new computer based production scheduling algorithm was developed. This paper describes the fundamentals of this newly developed heuristic scheduling algorithm and its application to a gold deposit. The results of this case study show that the schedules, based on the new method, provide improved cash flows compared to production schedules done manually.

Atmospheric Monitoring Systems (AMS) utilizing carbon monoxide sensors have demonstrated their superiority over thermal type fire sensors for early fire detection in underground coal mines. After proving their capability and dependability throughout the 1980's, systems are now evolving and applying new technologies to enhance their effectiveness and reliability. The use of AMS in coal mines which utilize diesel equipment presents unique obstacles. Exhaust gases from diesel equipment not only raise mine ambient CO readings, but also cause numerous nuisance alarms. Both of these conditions reduce the effectiveness of the AMS. New technologies, such as discriminating devices, smoke detectors, and time delays, as well as administrative controls, have been developed and are being utilized to help reduce nuisance alarms produced by the diesel exhaust. This paper will discuss these technologies and administrative controls which are being utilized in coal mines to enhance the effectiveness of the Atmospheric Monitoring Systems. Following lip on a USBM-sponsored research project, the authors have utilized the knowledge-base structure and system concepts from the Sun Sparcstation-based worker scheduling system of the Mine Management Support System to develop a PC-based application. The new software adopts the nested-window concept to facilitate data collection and modification on personnel, their availability on a shift, and work priorities for a shift as well as to allocate manpower optimally on a work shift and delineate supervisory training responsibilities. The various components of the software are described in detail, along with enhancements made to the original system.

This article describes seven key industry trends and the impact each is having on surface mining equipment suppliers. 1. Globalization Earth-spanning technologies are shrinking the world into an economic village, causing corporations to think and plan on a global scale. This “globalization” is one of the great buzzwords of the 1990s, meaning precisely whatever the user says it means. In this case, let us take it to mean that political boundaries arc less restrictive than in the past, permitting mining companies new freedom to roam the globe for ore bodies. Evolving out of this are global mining houses that have ownership and management interests in labyrinthian webs of mines spanning the world. There are several impacts on surface mining equipment suppliers.

Mining and environmental objectives have traditionally been in conflict. This conflict reflects a delicate balance between the need to spend money to protect the environment, and the need to save money by extracting minerals efficiently. In an increasing number of cases, profit margins diminish rapidly with new environmental regulations and reactionary measures. Forced cleanups and increasing restrictions are unwelcome expensive processes. A practical solution lies in planning rather than reacting. This requires the ability to precisely quantify and qualify environmentally sensitive problems by providing effective engineering tools to model, visualize and analyze subsurface conditions. Prevention of environmental conflicts, and effective cost control are both rooted in the mining company's ability to construct accurate models, monitor changes, assess contamination risks and to design effective remediation plan. This paper presents a case study where these issues are addresses through the application of a new and innovative technology.

Work on the design of Kelex 100 was initiated several years ago at the Research Laboratories of Ashland Chemical Company. The effort was specifically directed toward the synthesis of an organic molecule which would strongly and selectively chelate copper ions in acidic solutions and form an oil soluble complex which would be stable in contact with an aqueous phase having a pH of approximately one. This publication describes efforts to establish data which could be used to estimate the economic utility of the new reagent. For helping to accomplish these ends, the author wishes to acknowledge the assistance of Mr. A. V. Henrickson of Hazen Research, Inc. for gathering a portion of the data presented here and to thank the copper companies who supplied leach solutions for studies described in this paper.

"As part of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s $10.5bn East Side Access Project in New York, 3,200 m of tunnel had to be constructed in rock, mix face and soft ground conditions beneath one of the largest passenger railroad junctions in North America, handling over 780 trains per day. The use of risk based decision making tools was essential in developing the bespoke contract framework that was adopted as well as making informed decisions once excavation commenced. This paper will outline the risk management process adopted, discuss the risks and mitigation strategies adopted and comment on the impacts of this approach on the as built Project cost and schedule. In particular, the paper will outline the unique approach used to establish the baseline against which the Contractors performance would be measured as the selection of a Slurry TBM to excavate the tunnels was considered to compromise the effective use of a Geotechnical Baseline Report. BACKGROUND AND CHALLENGES Contract CQ031, Queens bored Tunnels and Structures was awarded in September 2009 to a joint venture of Granite Northeast/Traylor Brothers/Frontier Kemper (GTF JV) for $717.6m following a negotiated procurement process. A robust approach was taken with regard to the management and payment for risks associated with the construction of these tunnels. Risk assessments were carried out during the design phase and a risk register was developed prior to procurement. During the procurement phase close attention was paid to ensuring that the allocation and pricing of known risks, together with mechanisms for managing future risks were clearly defined between the MTA and GTF JV.In comparison to the excavation work in Manhattan, which was performed in competent hard Manhattan schist, the tunnels in Queens were excavated predominantly through soft ground with a high water table and complex environmental conditions. Not only did this require the use of pressurized face TBM technology, a first in New York, but also a re-evaluation of the contractual mechanisms used to manage the hard rock excavation contracts for their appropriateness to the soft ground tunnel work."
