APPROXIMATELY two years ago the authors obtained data that indi-cated that initial precipitation could not be detected by change of lattice parameter in the aluminum-rich aluminum-magnesium alloys. Some of these data were first published in a brief note in MINING AND METAL-LURGY1. Cast specimens were used at that time and they showed initial precipitation relatively sooner than sheet material of the sane composi-tion. For this reason a more thorough investigation has been carried out using a homogenized aluminum-magnesium sheet containing approxi-mately 10 per cent magnesium. Materials.-The aluminum used in the preparation of the aluminum-magnesium alloy was of high purity, containing less than 0.01 per cent each of iron, silicon and copper. The magnesium was high-purity sub-limed magnesium. Preparation of Alloy.-Approximately 4 kg. of the aluminum was melted in a plumbago crucible in an electric furnace and the magnesium was added. The melt was thoroughly stirred with a graphite rod and fluxed with chlorine gas before casting. The alloy was cast in the form of a sheet ingot in a cold iron tilting mold (approximately 200 by 165 by 40 min.) and into small chill-cast, slabs for chemical analysis (75 by 40 by 5 mm.). The chemical analyses were made upon drillings from the analysis slabs. The analytical methods were those described in "Chemical Analysis of Aluminum," published by the Aluminum Company of Amer-ica. The composition of the alloy was found to be: magnesium 10.30, silicon 0.013, iron 0.008 and copper 0.005 per cent.

INTRODUCTION Activated charcoal has been used for several centuries in many capacities including the recovery, isolation and purification of various materials (1). The first use of charcoal in a gold metallurgical system was in the extraction of gold after chlorination (2, 3,4). The gold was dissolved in a chlorine system and subsequently filtered through charcoal. The application of charcoal with cyanide extraction was patented by Johnston (5) in 1894 and adopted commercially in Australia in 1897. The process consisted of dissolving the gold and silver in a potassium cyanide solution and passing it through a series of charcoal filters. The charcoal was subsequently smelted to recover the gold and silver. The interest in the use of charcoal diminished in the first part of the twentieth century as the practice of the use of zinc as a precipitating agent increased. However, in 1916, the Yuanmi Mine in Australia replaced their zinc precipitation plant with a charcoal adsorption plant. In 1926, Scott and Gross (7) of the U. S. Bureau of Mines con- ducted extensive research on the adsorption of gold and silver from cyanide leach solutions. Among their findings was the result that the most important factor in improving the adsorptive power of charcoal was heat treatment with oxidation by air or steam. The work of Zadra (8) in 1952 stimulated renewed interest in the use of activated charcoal in gold and silver recovery with the development of a method of recovery of the gold and silver from the charcoal other than its destruction by burning. SPODUMENE is a lithium-bearing pyroxene, and is an important source of lithium compounds. Because of its high alumina and lithia content, it might be a desirable constituent of glass batches. The use of spodu-mene in ceramics will undoubtedly increase, as it has been shown that a mixture of the proper proportions of this mineral with soda feldspar and potash feldspar has a much lower maturing temperature upon firing than has any one of the three components.1 The mineral spodumene seldom occurs as pure mineral, but ordinarily with feldspars, mica and quartz. All spodumene-bearing rocks tested contained these minerals as gangue. Small amounts of iron and manga-nese oxides also were present, usually as stains on the silicate grains. Mica associated with the spodumene carried a considerable amount of lithia. This was discovered in flotation tailings, which, although virtually free of spodumene grains when examined microscopically, showed 0.4 to 0.5 per cent Li2O on chemical analysis. The lithia content of micas picked from the North Carolina spodumene rock was variable. Some samples contained little lithia, others more than 3 per cent. In 1938, under the supervision of Oliver C. Ralston, ? the Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Tennessee Mineral Products Corporation, undertook to study the beneficiation of North Carolina spodumene by froth flotation. The Bureau had previously published investigations on the beneficiation of spodumene.2,3 The methods described in the second publication' did not give good results with badly weathered spodumene rock, so that more thorough investigation of the subject was warranted.

GERMANIUM is a member of that group of ele-nents—carbon, silicon, germanium, and tin-— that are currently of particular interest because of their interesting electrical properties. Near room temperature these materials of diamond cubic crystal structure are characteristically brittle. However, there have been several recent reports that germanium is not brittle at elevated temperatures These observations may be summarized as follows: 1—Germanium single crystals were observed to creep in bending under a maximum fiber stress of 6 kg per mm&apos; (8500 psi) at 500°C and above.&apos; The creep curves were sigmoidal, with an induction period that decreased with increasing temperature. 2—Germanium crystal bars have been bent 90" about radii ten times the bar thickness at 550°C.&apos; 3—-Audible clicks were heard when l/4 in. thick crystals were bent drastically at 450" to 500°C. No microstructural evidence of mechanical twinning was observed 4—Slip lines have been observed in tensile specimens deformed at 600°C, and are coincident with (111) planes, the close-packed planes of the diamond cubic structure.] The slip direction has not been established. 5—A germanium crystal has been compressed approximately 20 pct along a <110> axis at 700°C." The results reported subsequently were obtained in exploratory experiments intended to indicate some aspects of the behavior of germanium single crystals when tested in simple tension. Processes for the removal of phosphorus from iron or steel are steadily assuming greater importance in view of the abundance of high-phosphorus iron-ore and the diminishing supply of pure ore. In the present methods of removing phosphorus by the basic open-hearth or basic Bessemer process, or even by electric processes, complete control over the metallurgical conditions is either impossible or has not yet been realized. The removal of phosphorus has so long been accomplished along certain well-defined lines, that when the electric furnace made its appearance metallurgists adhered to the same old reactions used in the older processes and failed to appreciate and take advantage of the new forces at their disposal. One object of the present paper is to set forth more clearly the metallurgical reactions by which phosphorus can be removed from iron, and to show the necessity of controlling the conditions, and particularly the temperature, by means other than combustion in the furnace-chamber. Invariably, the commercial removal of phosphorus has been accomplished by oxidation. The reactions involved in oxidation of phosphorus in general consist, first, of the formation of P2O5 and second, the combination of this oxide with lime, forming calcium phosphate, which latter is held in a slag high in iron oxide. In the present-used processes, the phosphorus is never removed without the assistance or presence of considerable quantities of iron oxide. Coal mining in the State of Washington offers many interesting problems for the mining engineer, due to the varied physical conditions occurring in different fields, and often in the same mine. The different coal seams worked in the same mine commonly require different mining and transportation methods for economical operation. The coal measures have inclinations ranging from 5&apos; to vertical, and in the same mine the dip of the coal may vary from 30&apos; to 50 . In all fields, the seams are extensively faulted, folded, and sheared. The quality of the coal produced ranges from brown lignite to bituminous coking coal, the following being typical analyses: Very little of the coal contains as much as 0.75 per cent. sulfur. The brown lignites occur mostly in Lewis and Thurston Counties, and as a rule are very cheaply mined. This coal has been successfully used in locomotives of the Oregon & Washington Railroad, after equipping them with specially designed fireboxes. The sub-bituminous coals occur in all the coal-mining counties. Their cost of production varies widely, according to the character of the formations, the pitch, and the wall conditions. This makes a fairly good steam coal, but the lump is used mostly for domestic trade, after grading into lump, nut, and pea. The coking coal is used for making coke, and for locomotive and other boiler fuel. It yields a strong metallurgical coke, quite high in ash, though seldom exceeding 18 per cent. ash. In the flotation of iron ores and nonmetallic ores desliming is the key to a successful operation; the technology of flotation of well-deslimed ores has become fairly well established. When finely disseminated ores are ground to liberation, however, conventional desliming of the fully dispersed pulp results in an excessive loss of valuable constituents. Selective flocculation of iron oxides followed by removal of dispersed siliceous slimes is a new development and is one of the most promising approaches to the treatment of finely disseminated, oxidized iron ores, available in vast quantities both here and abroad (1,2,3). To apply selective flocculation to the variety of refractory iron ores or to cope with the fluctuations in an individual ore and the make-up water, the factors governing this technique must be clearly formulated. For the removal of siliceous and clayey slimes from oxidized iron ores by selective flocculation, the optimum conditions are extremely sensitive to the mineralogical characteristics of the ore, the type and the amount of soluble salts in pulp solutions, and the mesh-of-grind. Certain starches appear to function better than others (4, 5). Selection of the proper reagents and their judicious use is important not only for their efficient utilization but also for minimizing the adverse effects they might exert on the flocculation and flotation steps, and the pollution the effluents might cause when discharged, either intentionally or accidentally, into lakes and streams. In the present article some of the major factors that influence the selective flocculation of iron ores are summarized.

A first requirement for assessing the safety of a rock slope, either artificial or natural, particularly if the rock behaves in an elastic-brittle manner, is a propw knowledge of the distribution of stresses within the slope and their development with time and advancement of workings. There are a uumber of different methods that can be used, in principle, for obtaining this information, such as (1) stress measurement in situ, (2) photoelasticity,1 (3) analytical methods, and (4) numerical methods. In cases where the stress distribution cannot be obtained by classical analytical methods, as in the one considered herein, either photoelasticity or numerical methods are norrnally used. However, actually, due to the rapid development of high-speed computers, increasing preference is given to the numerical methods. Among the latter, the most successful ones, to date, for determining the stress distribution in slopes have been (1) the finite difference method,2-4 (2) the lumped parameter method,5 and (3) the finite element rnethod.6 However, for determining gravity stresses in a natural rock slope, only the finite difference method has been used until now.7,8 A solution of the same problem by the finite element method will be shown here in which a particular reference is given to the development of tensile fracture zones within the slope. [ ] Utilizing tendencies for low grade ores in the Sudbury District of Ontario to cave after higher grade ore has been mined, International Nickel Co., of Canada, Ltd., is recovering millions of tons of nickel-copper ore once regarded as submarginal. Inco is working lower grade ore than ever mined before from its underground operations because of the caving method and metallurgical practices. In the caving method, blocks containing as much as 1.5 million tons of ore are undercut. As ore from the undercut block is withdrawn, the block to be mined breaks away and starts to disintegrate as it moves downward. Inco is also using the blasthole method, using explosives to break slices of harder, tougher ore from solid material. Inco has built a new concentrator at one of its most recent shafts for handling the increased tonnages of low grade ore. The concentrator presently has a 10,000-ton per day capacity, and is scheduled to be increased to 12,000 tons. Hoisting from the mine is by push-button control and the ore is milled on the spot. A 7 ½ -mile pipeline carries bulk concentrate to reduction plants at Copper Cliff. Giant crushers, weighing 165 tons each, have been installed underground. Twenty-ton electric locomotives haul ore to the crushers. The expansion program is expected to lift total annual production of nickel in the free world to 375 million pounds annually, an increase of 150 million pounds. Inco is presently mining more than 1 million tons of ore per month from combined surface and underground operations.

IN recent years many prophets have arisen who hold that gold has outlived its days and that its monetary use is now an anachronism. These prophets include well-known politicians, economists and businessmen. Some of them have called it a joke that metal should be dug up at heavy cost in Africa and elsewhere and shipped to the United States of America only to go underground again at Fort Knox. Others have claimed that all the gold in the world could be sunk in the ocean without anyone being the poorer. The fact that you have invited me to address you on the future of gold may perhaps reflect the fears caused by these various predictions. At present the prophets&apos; taunts show no sign of coming true. The demand for gold is greater than ever before, although stocks held are the largest in history. Nearly all governments have gone to great lengths to suppress any demand that might be made by the public; they have reserved to themselves the right to hold gold and have lost no opportunity of satisfying their own demands. Where the public has been allowed to buy gold, the demand has proved impressively strong. In India the price of gold equals about $82 per fine ounce, having been $90 earlier in the year; in Egypt $65 to $70, after having been $87, and elsewhere it is even higher. In Palestine, for instance, the golden sovereign is traded at about £5, equivalent to $86 per fine ounce, having been nearly £6, equivalent to some $100 per fine ounce, earlier in

PART 1 INTRODUCTION All modern pelletizing plants are equipped with either the drum or the disc circuits. Choice of one or the other circuit is not simple and it is desirable to establish a firm basis for such a task. For a meaningful and a fair comparison it is necessary to have the two systems working in parallel in the same plant with the same concentrate under the same supervision. Furthermore, the comparison has to be based on a defined green ball quality and size distribution. BALLING CIRCUITS The LKAB straight grate plant at Malmberget, Sweden, was started up in Septenber 1973. It was designed for a 2.5 Mton annual capacity and was equipped with five balling drum circuits. During the first year of operation it was found that the induration plant had the potential for a higher capacity which required increased balling capacity. For this purpose it was decided to install a balling disc circuit complete with a roll screen. The reasons for selecting a disc were space limitations and LKAB&apos;s desire to gather experience on balling disc circuits. The disc circuit was started up in 1975 and was run in parallel with the balling drums in the same plant and with the same raw material and under the same operating personnel. The necessary conditions for a comparison were thereby fulfilled. The data for the size distribution and quality of the green balls were obtained on random sampling during one year of operation, so that all the variations which appear in a commercial plant are covered.

The chlorination of ilmenite concentrates and slags to produce Tic14 suitable for pigment or metal production was investigated by the Bureau of Mines along with the dechlorination of byproduct iron chloride to produce chlorine for recycle and iron oxide., Ilmenite concentrates or slag powders were fed into the bottom of a fluidized coke bed at 1,050º C using chlorine flow rates up to 20 l/min in a 10.2-cm-dim reactor. Tests showed that >95 percent of the various ilmenite concentrates reacted at optimum conditions, and recovery of TiC14 ranged from 95 to 100 percent of stoichiometric. Impurity dusts were removed from the vapors by cyclones and a fiberglass cloth filter. Iron chloride was condensed as a powder with less than 0.4 percent insoluble material. The TiC14 was collected in refrigerated condensers. Iron chloride was dechlorinated at 500º to 550º C by reaction with oxygen in a 16.5-cm-dim reactor using a fluidized bed of Fe2O3. Optimum processing was attained with a FeC13 feed containing 25 wt-pct Fe203 granules treated with 2 wt-pct NaCl catalyst; Under the above conditions, off gas chlorine concentrations of 62 to 90 wt-pct were obtained. During 2- and 3-day tests with technical-grade FeC13, conversion of FeC13 was 94 to 97 percent, chlorine concentrations were 76 to 90 wt-pct, and up to 92 pct of the stoichio- metric Fe203 was removed in the primary reactor discharge. Dispersion-strengthened sintered aluminum products are normally manufactured from surface-oxidized aluminum powder, SAP,&apos; or from atomized aluminum powder.&apos; The powder-blending technique consisting in mechanical mixing of the constituents has been used in the manufacture of numerous dispersion-strengthening alloys, but has never been successfully applied to aluminum alloys. This technique may, however, be applicable if it is possible to produce an unagglomerated mixture of the constituents in the form of fine powders, and the present study was initiated to test this assumption in the aluminum/aluminum oxide system.3 Table I lists the two grades of aluminum powder and the aluminum oxide powder used in the manufacture of the alloys. MD 105 A is an aluminum powder with an average grain size less than 5 IJ., which is isolated from the MD 105 powder by centrifugal separation in cyclohexanol. The aluminum powders and the aluminum oxide were blended in a high-speed blender and then subjected to cold compaction and hot compaction at 550" to 600°C. Subsequently the compacts were hot-extruded with an extrusion ratio of 15 to 1. The alloys were evaluated by tensile testing at room temperature and at 400°C, microscopic examination, and heat treatment at 500°C followed by tensile testing at room temperature. For the purpose of comparison, a commercial SAP quality supplied by Swiss Aluminium Ltd. was tested in the same manner. The usual hand-operated drilling outfit consists of a 4-in. post-hole auger with 3/4,-in. pipe for drill stem, in 4-ft lengths, with a turning handle fitted to a top pipe T. The auxiliary tools are: a chisel-bit drill made from 3/4 or 7/8-in. tool steel welded to a 4-ft length of 3/4-in, pipe, so that the regular pipe string can be used; also a churn or "mule foot" made from 3-in. pipe, slotted on one side, belled to a 4-in. tempered cutting edge on the bottom, all welded to a 3/4-in. coupling by a yoke. Other tools required are pipe wrenches and cleanout tools made from old auto springs (Fig I). A 4 1/2 or 5-in. collar welded to a plate is often used to protect the mouth of the drill hole. In general the auger is used in the typical clay overburden and brown phosphate matrix, which is relatively soft. The churn or "mule foot1&apos; is used in hard pan, lump phosphate or cherty ground. The drill is used for breaking flint, often found loose in the overburden. The drill with the chisel bit is used for trimming sides of the hole, sounding for lime bottom and breaking through hard lumps. Holes have been drilled to a depth of 80 ft, but the limit of efficient operation is about 50 ft. In deep holes it is necessary to unscrew the string in 20-ft lengths, to

Experiments have been carried out to study the effect of an applied stress on strain aging in steel. It was found that the stress-induced strain aging reaction proceeds rapidly in the temperature range of 0° to 60°C. The variation of stress-induced strain aging with plastic strain, aging time, and temperatures is reported. The activation energy for the stress-induced strain aging was found to be 10,000 cal per mol for the steel used in this investigation. VARIOUS observations1-5 have been made of the influence of an applied stress upon the yielding of iron and steel. However, there have been only cursory studies of the effect of an applied tensile stress upon strain aging in iron and steel1,2 The following represents the results of a preliminary study of strain aging as influenced by the application of an external tensile load during the aging process. For the most part, previous experimental work on strain aging can be classified into two parts. First, the experimental technique involved a direct determination of mechanical properties of a suitable specimen that has been plastically deformed to a constant strain and aged generally at a temperature of the order of 200°C, with the aging times varying from about 1/10 to 2 hr.6-8 The second classification of strain aging experiments involves an indirect determination of strain aging by means of physical property such as electrical resistivity or internal friction as a function of the aging time at a constant temperature and strain.9-12 The latter results have

The usual hand-operated drilling outfit consists of a 4-in. post-hole auger with 3/4,-in. pipe for drill stem, in 4-ft lengths, with a turning handle fitted to a top pipe T. The auxiliary tools are: a chisel-bit drill made from 3/4 or 7/8-in. tool steel welded to a 4-ft length of 3/4-in, pipe, so that the regular pipe string can be used; also a churn or "mule foot" made from 3-in. pipe, slotted on one side, belled to a 4-in. tempered cutting edge on the bottom, all welded to a 3/4-in. coupling by a yoke. Other tools required are pipe wrenches and cleanout tools made from old auto springs (Fig I). A 4 1/2 or 5-in. collar welded to a plate is often used to protect the mouth of the drill hole. In general the auger is used in the typical clay overburden and brown phosphate matrix, which is relatively soft. The churn or "mule foot1&apos; is used in hard pan, lump phosphate or cherty ground. The drill is used for breaking flint, often found loose in the overburden. The drill with the chisel bit is used for trimming sides of the hole, sounding for lime bottom and breaking through hard lumps. Holes have been drilled to a depth of 80 ft, but the limit of efficient operation is about 50 ft. In deep holes it is necessary to unscrew the string in 20-ft lengths, to
