A record $19.7 billion in minerals was produced by United States industries in 1963. This was some $800 million above the previous high established in 1962. Preliminary statistics compiled by the U.S. Bureau of Mines show that most metals, nonmetals, and fuels gained both in value and volume of production. The 1963 total represents the largest value increase since 1956 and continues an upward trend begun in 1959. Product.ion and value of all mineral fuels rose, with anthracite registering a remarkable 20% value increase. Nonmetals advanced 591 in value, gains exceeding losses by 213 to 1 among individual commodities. Heavier industrial demand and the settling of labor difficulties were among the factors contributing to increased output of such materials as iron ore, bauxite, molybdenum, lead, and zinc, which accounted for most in€ the growth in metal output. Silver prices continued to rise and, as a result, production value of that metal gained 132,.

New discoveries of gas in the southern counties featured the petroleum industry in West Virginia during 194;. Drilling for oil increased slightly over 1944 and a small increase of initial production resulted. Out of 28 wildcats drilled, there were 16 gas discoveries and 12 dry holes. No commercial oil was found in the 28 wells.

I am happy to welcome you to the twenty-third conference of the National Open-Hearth Committee, and our joint conference with the Blast Furnace Committee, of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers. It is appropriate that, for our fifteenth year anniversary, we should meet in the hotel and the city where this Open-Hearth Committee was inaugurated in 1925. At that first meeting, only a handful of men from a number of steel companies met to discuss ways and means to start a movement to improve the practical and metallurgical technique of open-hearth operations among independent manufacturers, as the United States Steel Corporation had carried on for many years.

O the American coal man, Australian coal mining most appear to have little, if any, influence on American coal-mining practice and to bear little relation to it. Actually, the relationship has been close, for Australian operators have carefully studied American practice by reading American technical publications, by consulting American engineers, and by visits to Ameriean operations. They have leaned heavily on America for their supply of mechanization equipment and many American mining-machinery manufacturers are active in that country, supplying its needs and furnishing technical assistance. Australia's influence on American coal mining has been obscure and probably negligible. However, it seems reasonable to assume that this influence will increase. The wartime development of air transportation will inevitably bring these two countries into much more intimate contact than existed in recent years. American servicemen. many of them former miners and coal-mining technicians, have visited Australian operation, while stationed in that country, have talked with operators and men over there, and undoubt-

The first century of mining in northern Idaho's Couer d'Alene District will soon he drawing to a close. Like so many other great raining districts, it has been a period accompanied by a rich and colorful history. From its early days as a gold rush camp, the district has evolved into the leading silver producer in the US, but the going has not been easy: early-day labor disputes, the challenge of mining for profit in some of the deepest mines in the Western hemisphere, and the constant search for new reserves at great depths have taken their toll of mines-and miners-along the way. To these traditional mining problems have of late been added the burden of inflationary cost increases, pollution control, and reclamation. A recent visit to the district by MINING ENGINEERING, how ever, revealed that the deep commitment of the operating companies and the quiet competence and vitality of their engineering personnel are key factors in the continued prosperity of the district.

Since the comprehensive review of the Persian fields presented by Sir John Cadman last year, operations have proceeded normally. No developments of especial importance fall to be recorded and it remains only to bring up to date the full information given at the beginning of 1933. Controlled production from the Masjid-i-Sulaiman and Haft Kel fields has been maintained at slightly higher rates than during 1932. The figures for the past five years are as follows: These represent crude oil and products piped to the coast but exclude products reinjected into the reservoir, a process that has been in continuous operation at Masjid-i-Sulaiman during the period under review. The systematic delimitation of the Haft Kel field has been continued during the past year and results have been sufficiently encouraging to justify the inception of a wider scheme for distribution of production. Drilling has been resumed recently in the Persian sector of the Naft Khaneh field, and preliminary survey work is in progress for the selection of a site for a refinery at Kermanshah arid the construction of a connecting pipe line. Investigations in connection with the scientific control of reservoir were dealt with in considerable detail in last year's review. This work has been steadily pursued during 1933 and certain of the investigations have been the subject of papers presented to the World Petroleum Congress held in London in July of last year.

Permeation rates for nitrogen through are-cast tungsten were measured in the temperature range 1800° to 2600°C at nitrogen pressure differentials of 1.0 and 0.1 atm. Gas chromatography was used to measure the quantities of nitrogen which permeated through 0.26-and 0.53-mm-thick membranes. Permeation rates were proportional to the difference between the square roots of the nitrogen pressure on each side of the membrane and inversely proportional to membrane thickness, indicating that atomic nitrogen was the difjusing species and that diffusion was the rate-limiting step of the process. Permeation coefficients calculated from the rates may be represented by the equation: where P is expressed in the units cu cm (stP)-mm per 1/2 sq cm-min-atm"' and 70.0 * 0.8 is the activation energy in kcal per mole of permeating species. In a previous paper' permeation rates were reported for hydrogen and for oxygen through tungsten. The permeation cells used for the hydrogen measurements were suitable for measuring nitrogen permeation under similar conditions, so the study was extended to include nitrogen. Permeation rates of nitrogen through the polycrys-talline arc-cast tungsten membranes were measured in the temperature range 1800" to 2600°C using two membrane thicknesses and two nitrogen pressure differentials. Permeation coefficients were calculated and the activation energy of the process determined. THEORY For diatomic gases which dissociate prior to diffusion, the quantity of gas which permeates through a membrane or wall at an elevated temperature where bulk diffusion is the rate-limiting step of the process is given by the equation: where: q = total amount of gas permeating a membrane, P = temperature-dependent permeation coefficient, A = area of membrane, t = time, p1 = gas pressure of high-pressure side, p2 = gas pressure of low-pressure side, and d = thickness of membrane. When bulk diffusion is the rate-controlling step, and the solubility of the gas obeys Henry's law, a further relationship is that, for any given temperature and pressure, the permeation is the product of diffusivity and the amount in solution. The permeation coefficient, P, is temperature-dependent according to the equation: where: Po = permeation constant, Q = activation energy, R = gas constant, and T = absolute temperature. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Cell Design and Experimental Apparatus. Two of the permeation cells used for the previous measurements of hydrogen permeation are shown in Fig. 1. Each consisted of a cylindrical chamber divided into two parts by a permeation membrane fabricated from high-purity (>99.9 pct W) wrought tungsten sheet made from vacuum arc-cast tungsten. The membrane in one cell was 0.26 mm thick and the other was 0.53 mm. The fabrication of these cells was described previously.' The permeation cells were mounted vertically in a high-temperature tungsten resistance furnace and the membranes and the center portions heated to test temperatures. Temperatures were measured by sighting an optical pyrometer on the edge of the membrane through a small hole in a tungsten plate which was fastened to the side of the cell. This arrangement provided an approximate black-body condition and eliminated the need for emittance corrections. Appropriate corrections were made for the quartz window through which the temperatures were measured. Argon gas flowed through the 10-liter volume of the furnace at the rate of 4.7 liters per min. THE Engineering Education Committee of the Institute convened at the Engineering Societies Building on Feb. 18, .1929, with. E. A. Holbrook, dean of the Schools of Mines and Engineering, University of Pittsburgh, in the chair. STATISTICAL' STUDY OF STUDENTS IN MINING The first paper, a statistical study of the students enrolled in courses leading to a mining degree in 40 institutions, was presented by H. D. Keiser,, assistant editor of the Engineering and Mining Journal; who gave a brief outline of an article he was about to publish in ?that journal?. The complete article appears in the issue for March 30; 1929: To avoid repetition the results are summarized as follows: A request was sent to 42 institutions which give courses in mining' for the number of students enrolled as freshmen; sophomores; juniors, seniors and special students in mining for the years 1925-26, 1926-27, 1927-28, 1928-29. Two of these colleges replied that there were no students in mining. Students' enrolled in courses in metallurgy, geology and engineering, other than mining, were excluded from the statistics:. P. R. Kalischer.*—I should like to amplify a little one of the points made by Dr. Hensel, and rather violently disagree with him at the same time. He brought out the point that when the higher forming pressures are used on the green compacts there is a marked decrease in the density as sintered. We found that to be true and, of course, many of you notice that that is true with copper compacts also. But, in my opinion at least, it is not true that the expansion is due to entrapped air. We have vacuum-pressed both silver and copper compacts and obtained almost exactly the same numerical expansion as we secured by pressing in air. The powder, however, that is vacuum-annealed does show a slight decrease in expansion on sintering, but almost the entire increase on expansion can be overcome by very slow rates of heating. And it is our opinion that a majority of the expansion is due to dissolved oxygen in the discrete metal particles themselves rather than to entrapped gases. Another interesting observation that we have made is that often with silver or copper compacts it is desirable to silver solder or braze the compact into some part of a piece of equipment after completing powder metallurgical operations on it. If such a compact is sintered and coined, say a silver compact, given an initial forming pressure of 10 to 15 tons per square inch, and sintered, there is an adequate amount of shrinkage and it can be coined at about 50 or 60 tons per square inch and bring up the density nearly to theoretical. If, then, that compact is silver-soldered into some part of a fixture or a machine, it will expand very beautifully, and the only way that this can be overcome. as far as we know, has been to reanneal after the coining operation at a temperature higher than is to be used in any subsequent operation. In that way, a density very nearly theoretical can be achieved, but the coining operation cannot be carried to the excessively high pressures or expansion and bubbling of the compact will occur again.

At the present time, the designer of dies for metal powder pressing is handicapped by relative ignorance of stress distribution and frictional effects at the interior surface of the die. Unckell was the first to develop a method for the study of wall friction. He used three Brinell balls on which the die rested during pressing. The total frictional wall force was determined by the size of impression these balls left on a soft metal plate. Since the method does not give radial pressures, or distribution of such pressures, coefficients of friction could not be determined. Although Unckel measured density distribution, he was not able to determine radial or shear stresses. Shaler2 has proposed theoretical expressions for the stress and density distribution within cylindrical compacts during pressing, in accordance with the experimental results of Kamm, Steinberg, and Wulff.3 By application of Siebel's method,4 Kamm et a13 plotted stress trajectories for two compacts. From the stress trajectories they calculated coefficients of friction from point to point along the die wall. As pointed out by Shaler in the discussion of Ref. 3, these values are based on progressive point-to-point calculations on finite size grid squares across the compact. In the region of the die wall such calculated values may therefore have considerable cumulative error. The purpose of the present paper is to develop an experimental method by which the nonhydrostatic pressures and shears acting on the interior wall of a cylindrical die can be measured. Such measurements can then he correlated with existing data to aid in the explanation of the pressing process. The method used is based on the elastic: properties of the thick-walled tube used as the die. The principle of super-position of force systems on an elastic body is assumed to hold. Electric strain gauges were mounted in adjacent positions on the exterior die wall in order to get an exact measurement of the variation of tangential strain over the length of the die during pressing. While in this paper, measurements in terms of only tangential strains are considered, it is well to note that similar calculations may be set up for axial strains. The latter are not preferred, since they tend to be smaller than the tangential strains and therefore permit less sensitive measurements. Discussion in this work is restricted to compacts pressed from both ends, since the elastic deformation of the die is then more amenable to analysis. Before choosing the electric strain gauge method, a more direct line of attack was considered and discarded. The discarded idea was the insertion of a pressure gauge through a hole in the die wall.* The gauge would have been in the form of a small piston. If pressure were exerted against such a gauge, it would move outward along a radius of the die. One disadvantage of the scheme is its inability to measure shears along the die wall. Another more serious disadvantage is the disturbance caused by the device itself. It would serve to change the forces it was designed to measure. No matter how small the movement of the gauge, when pressure is applied a discontinuity would exist in the wall surface at that point. Due to the stress concentration caused by the hole, abnormal deflections of the die wall would occur around the gauge. During pressing, powder would be forced into the resulting depression. The depression would then become larger with increasing compacting pressure. Powder, not being a fluid, is capable of supporting shear. The ease with which it would flow into the die wall depression to further move the piston is an indication, not of the radial pressure at that point, but of the state of shear retarding the movement. Thus the "pressure" gauge is really a criterion of flowability, and of the capability of the powder to support shear. For these reasons, it was decided that the electric strain method, herein employed, was more reliable, if more indirect. The gauges and lead wires, mounted on the external die wall do not in any way affect the behavior of the metal powder or the die during pressing. " D = diameter of particles in meters. " 8 = specific gravity of the mineral. These curves embrace a large number of specific gravities, and for each specific gravity the relation of the diameter of the mineral particle to the velocity of its fall in water is given for all diameters and velocities used in practice. The second diagram is an enlargement of the lower left-hand corner of the first, the third bears the same relation to the second, and in like manner the fourth to the third.
