In presenting this paper may I preface my remarks by recognizing the presence here to-day of the many delegates from the overseas mining communities throughout the world. That is to say - those delegates not representative of Companies resident in Australia. This does not mean that my comments following are directed solely to the Australian exporter - far from it. The Company which I represent is internationally based. The experiences we have had in dealing and negotiating with our good friends the mineral cargo shippers vary very little in any operational area. However for the purposes of this exercise this address is based on some of our experiences within the Australian trade scene with the emphasis on the fact that we believe it has application to all trading areas.

I find that during the short time I have been in this district, the majority of boilers are, and have been, receiving very bad usage owing to the difficulties which they have to contend against, viz., oil and bad water. Oil on the heating surface of a boiler is of a highly dangerous nature inasmuch as it allows the surface to become overheated, owing to the water not coming into direct contact with the plates, and it naturally follows that when the crown sheets of a flue or firebox become overheated, you lose a considerable amount of the strength of the plate, and the flue or crown comes down. Referring to the oil question, I find that too much care cannot or exercised on the part of engine drivers in order to minimise as much as possible the internal lubrication of the various engines under their control. For I consider that it is here that the most of the trouble is caused. My reasons for stating such to be the case, are:-That the majority of enginedrivers before coming to this field have been used to driving engines that have been exhausting into the atmosphere, and probably they have been taught that it is far better to use a little extra lubrication than to have a hot bearing. So far so good. But one thing that must not be overlooked is that on these fields the conditions are altered in this respect, as the majority of engines in this district are not exhausting into the atmosphere, but are condensing their exhaust steam and using the water so condensed for feed purposes.

Construction of cave mining systems requires significant capital expenditure and long-term commitment of human, equipment and material resources before production commences. Risks and uncertainties of these large-scale mining projects are significantly higher than for small-scale projects. This is due to the complexity and interactions of the construction schedule components and the large scale and uniqueness of such projects. One way to successfully manage construction uncertainties that would lead to schedule delays is to include a reasonable cost contingency in the budget estimation. A real options approach based on the least-squares Monte Carlo (LSM) method is used to estimate cost contingency associated with schedule uncertainty in mass mining projects. Cost contingency is estimated as the cost of potential project crashing (acceleration) decisions, which pays for not extending the schedule. While such a significant undertaking is expected to be subject to some delays, these can have an enormous impact on the economic value of such projects. The value of the crashing option was explicitly formalised into the process of valuation, as it is assumed to be a single option being considered in the valuation at every decision point prior to the construction completion date. As a part of the proposed method, a stochastic function for the percentage of remaining scope of work for the remaining duration of the entire project was integrated into a framework of numerical simulations. This ensured that this function can implicitly account for sources of schedule uncertainties for projects represented by multiple and overlapping work packages. The LSM method was applied to a real case scenario in an operating block cave mine, with modified scale and features. The results yielded by the LSM method indicated that significant changes in capital budget allocation stem from variation in a contractor’s risk perception and confidence level of estimated delays.CITATION:Ahmed, H M and Dunbar, W S, 2016. Experimental petrology may be used to accurately constrain PTX conditions in order to calibrate and understand geologic processes. This method may be used to answer postulated questions, by recreating known geologic conditions and observing changes in the experimental charges. The purpose of this project was to determine the eutectic composition and temperature in the ternary system PbS-FeS-ZnS ¦ (Ag2S), at ambient and elevated pressures and elucidate if the sulfides of the Broken Hill orebody may have been partially molten during highgrade (granulite facies) metamorphism. The study determined the eutectic temperature and composition in the system PbS-FeS-ZnS to be 800¦2¦C and 62.5% PbS, 30.5%FeS, 7% ZnS respectively, at one atmosphere, and the eutectic temperature at 27 kbars was found to be 960¦C¦10¦C, with a eutectic composition enriched in ZnS relative to the one atmosphere eutectic. the addition of lwt.% Ag2S to the system depresses the eutectic temperature to 772¦2¦C at 1 atmosphere and below 810¦5¦C at 5 kbars. The conditions of peak metamotphism for the cental and southern areas of the Broken Hill Block, New South Wales, Australia , lie above the solidus of the PbS-FeS-ZnS-Ag2S system, strongly suggesting that partial melting occurred in the orebody.

Alluvial gold is an ideal exploration tracer to bedrock source and indicator of bedrock mineralisation style because: (i) gold occurs in a wide range of deposit types, (ii) primary composition is sensitive to style of mineralisation, and (iii) it is a heavy resistate mineral that is readily preserved and easily sampled. In regional exploration of the Central Ranges of Irian Jaya, alluvial gold mineralogy has been applied to maximise the information return from panned concentrate sampling and to focus exploration effort. Primary gold is a solid solution of Au+Ag¦Cu¦Hg, ¦ trace Pd, Te, and Sb. In general Ag¦Hg increase and Cu decreases with inferred decreasing temperature of formation, and gold from particular mineralisation styles has signature compositions that can be used as indicators of bedrock mineralisation type. Furthermore, the abundance of alluvial gold is an indicator of the economic potential of a catchment. The convergent continental-oceanic plate geology of the Central Ranges is conducive to a wide range of mineralisation styles. Mineralogy of gold in ophiolite, skarn, porphyry, mesothermal vein and possible VHMS environments is characterised from alluvial and bedrock samples, and the use of gold mineralogy in prospecting at regional scale through prospect definition to drilling is demonstrated.

The discussion which followed the publication of my paper by the formert has, I think, enhanced its value. It may therefore be of interest to members of our Australasian Institute, who are not members of the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy, if I give a synopsis of the discussion.My attention was drawn to the fact that my paper did not make clear the extent of the improvement in furnace operations, which followed the use of coke of high quality; this comment applied more particularly to the lead content of slag. A cyanidation study was conducted on a mild refractory gold ore sample from the Central zone of Clarence Stream Property, owned by Freewest Resources Canada, to develop a leaching strategy to extract gold. Gold, at a grade of 8.00 g/t, is present as native gold, electrum and aurostibite. The ore also contains 2.8 per cent pyrrhotite, together with several antimony minerals (0.8 per cent berthierite and gudmundite, 0.18 per cent native antimony and stibnite). It also exhibits weak preg-robbing properties with 0.16 per cent organic carbon. Aurostibite, a gold antimony compound, is particularly known to be insoluble in cyanide solution. The antimony dissolves in cyanide solution to form antimonates, which retards gold dissolution. Industrial practice of extracting gold from aurostibite generally consists of producing a flotation concentrate, which is leached in a pipe reactor at low alkalinity and high oxygen pressure with about 20 g/L cyanide. The proposed new approach is efficient and allows the extraction of gold directly from an ore at atmospheric pressure and a low cyanide concentration at pH 10.5. The effects of grinding, pretreatment, lead nitrate, kerosene and cyanide concentrations have been investigated. The maximum gold extraction obtained on the ore was 87.9 per cent using 800 ppm NaCN, 500 g/t lead nitrate, 30 g/t kerosene, DO 10 ppm and pH 10.5 in 168 hours. The associated cyanide consumption was 1.3 kg/t. The additions of lead nitrate and kerosene increased gold extraction. In comparison to a P80 of 74 ¦m, a P80 of 30 ¦m significantly increased gold extraction. Gold in solid solution in gudmundite and arsenopyrite was believed to be responsible for the unleached fraction until mineralogical analysis of hydroseparation concentrates of leach residues showed that most of the unleached gold occurs as aurostibite, either as locked grains in sulfides/sulfarsenides or as grains with passivation rims of an Au-Sb-O phase. Coarse gold was also found. Gold extraction was not sensitive to cyanide concentration from 250 ppm to 1200 ppm NaCN and high pH was detrimental. Decreasing the cyanide concentration reduced the cyanide consumption to 0.85 kg/t. The removal of coarse gold using a Knelson concentrator and a Mosley table prior to leaching increased the gold extraction to 90.4 per cent (leach residue at 0.77 g/t).

A data science based dilution study was conducted to identify the causes of dilution at South32’s Cannington Mine (Cannington), a large open stoping operation. In terms of industry benchmarks for unplanned dilution, Cannington is already performing very well, and so opportunities for improvement are more difficult to identify. The study is based upon back analysis of nearly 150 case studies from the mines reconciliation database, and has quantified the relative effect and significance levels for the following dilution parameters; time until paste filling, faulting and cable bolt reinforcement. Specifically, significant contributions were associated with faults and stope open duration. Quantifying the effect of faults on stability graph accuracy enabled a site specific adjustment to improve the predictive ability of the Cannington stability graph (unstable stope specificity improved from 63 per cent to 74 per cent). Despite Cannington’s already high levels of stope performance compared to industry benchmarks, data science methods have identified a complex interaction between identified dilution factors (ie stope open duration, presence of faults and cablebolting). Specifically, a third order Factorial ANOVA (Analysis of Variance) provided evidence that stope open duration reduces the effectiveness of cable bolts in faulted ground (average dilution = 2.1 m, p-value = 0.13). These results are consistent with site observations of a relationship between the stope open duration and the extent of failure when unravelling on a fault, even when cables are present.CITATION:Maher, K, Stewart, P C and Robotham, S, 2016. Most geophysical and geochemical data collected during regional exploration programmes are in vector form (location, value), and have traditionally been presented and interpreted in a profile or contour map format. However, the human vision system can interpret data presented in image format much more easily and new information is often revealed by the judicious application of powerful interactive computer image enhancement techniques. This paper describes a practical demonstration of the application of such tools to gravity and resistivity datasets from the Central Volcanic Region of theNorth Island.   Filtering, contrast enhancement, relief shading, pseudo-colouring and then overlaying of the gridded datasets in image format has helped identify inter-relationships such as the association between many low resistivity anomalies (epithermal deposits or geothermal resources) and the edges of large gravity anomalies (calderas or grabens). Similar revelations should result from the application of these tools to the integration of other mapped datasets from geophysical, geochemical and geological disciplines.

OZ Minerals’ Carrapateena mine is a Sublevel cave mine located in South Australia, approximately 160 km north of the regional centre of Port Augusta. Carrapateena commenced underground development in 2016, with production commencing in 2019 and ramping up to 4.25 Mtpa by December 2020. In pursuit of continual improvement, the Carrapateena mining team sought to identify how it could better interrogate its current productivity levels and its drivers (root causes). During this process the team were confronted by a disconcerting number of different opinions (which often conflicted) on our actual productivity performance which led to a need for review. Although reliable data and a well-designed time utilisation model (TUM) existed, it was still unclear what actions needed to be put in place to improve productivity. This was for the following reasons: • Data sources were disparate unless significant effort was applied to compile them. • Data sources were not available in a format that could be easily viewed or analysed. • General understanding of the data which was collected and how it could be used was poor. • Process of regularly analysing performance and forming tangible actions to improve was lacking rigour. A project was then started with the goal to fix the areas stated above. An initial requirements gathering exercise was undertaken to identify key data sources for site which returned a staggering 42 known systems which were then shortlisted to the key systems that contained operational data and could generate tangible improvements when analysed. This paper discusses the approach to selecting the OZ Minerals Insights Hub as the chosen platform, and the effort and collaboration between cross-functional departments that was involved in transforming the data so it could be displayed in a useful way. The data sources identified included a fleet management system, two planning databases, a control system historian, and a mobile fleet machine data system. New processes were also introduced to digitally capture daily commentary; this was achieved utilising SharePoint Forms. Data pipelines were then developed in the Insights Hub platform to automate the ingestion and transformation of the raw mining data into curated data models for end user consumption. Tableau dashboard packages have been created to support facilitation of short interval control, daily review meetings, and weekly review meetings as well as data analysis of key equipment and locations. These dashboards visualise the mining data models in a form that provides the user a clear picture of what has occurred, why it has occurred, and where to focus improvement efforts. This has resulted in a team which is more accountable, more equipped to assess the root cause of performance, and more regularly able to make data driven decisions. The next step? To build this out from Mine to Mill and create a data indexing tool which will drive self-service reporting, a data agnostic platform and predictive tools that help our people continue to be one step in front.

Frequently materials handling operations are compromised by transfer chute problems ranging from high wear rates, blockages and ineffective loading of the downstream conveyor. This paper will present the design flow implemented to overcome problems in two case studies utilising discrete element modelling incorporating material characterisation.Material testing is relevant in achieving a valid discrete element method (DEM) simulation model and subsequently a valuable design tool for transfer chute assessment and design. It is well recognised that in the current growth and demand for mineral resources, leading to ever increasing conveyor capacities associated with export terminals and mineral processing facilities that transfer chutes are a key focus point. The successful performance of the transfer chute is also dependent on operating with a ærobust rangeÆ of material flowability and handling characteristics. This requirement is crucial in accommodating mineral ores from developing resources, which are often more friable and stickier than in past decades.This paper will include details of chute installations associated with iron ore and coking coal, from the DEM simulations through to the performance of the installed and commissioned plant.CITATION:Moore, B A, van der Merwe, S and van Aarde, N, 2013. Assmang Khumani Iron Ore Mine is exploiting the iron ore deposits that can be found in the Bruce-King-Mokaning farm areas in the Northern Cape, South Africa. The Bruce, King and Mokaning (Khumani) deposits are approximately 10 km south of the town Kathu, adjacent to the Sishen Mine. Assmang Limited is jointly owned and controlled by African Rainbow Minerals Limited and Assore Limited.Measurement, calculation and trending of plant throughput and chemical ore properties are critical in maintaining a successful beneficiation operation due to these values forming the basis of decision-making and thus promotion of efficient ore extraction. The Khumani management and engineering information system (MEIS) supplies information on key process parameters to an operational team and is required to do so within an optimal time frame, for maximum impact.Diverse data is put into the MEIS from multiple specialist systems, with interfaces that require manual intervention. Manual intervention is resource and time intensive to the point which limits the effect on the process and decreases the potential for value addition.Automation of interfaces decreases resource and time requirements, standardising plant wide data sources and providing the opportunity to provide specialist system data to decision-makers in a timely fashion, resulting in maximum impact on the process output.Engineering and metallurgical management systems were interfaced at Khumani Iron Mine by means of an automated table which facilitates the transfer of production data validated within the engineering system as input to the metal accounting system. This interface effectively assigns a master to each specialist data set employed for decision-making and delivers accurate process parameters to the production team within an optimal time frame, resulting in increased potential to improve beneficiation efficiency.CITATION:Nel, H M, Nassis, T and du Toit, T, 2013. The early records of hydraulic elevator and bucket ladder dredging in the Clutha River system indicate the success of that era of alluvial gold mining in Otago. This paper briefly reviews parameters of depth and gold grade for alluvial operations. The application of dragline technology is proposed for the economic removal of overburden to target the deeper alluvial gold areas which remain in the Otago region.

The cohesive zone in the blast furnace is largely affected by the softening and melting behaviour of ferrous burden because of its vital role in the blast furnace process. The Visual High Temperature Methodology (VHTM) has been given to study the softening and melting behaviour of sinter, two kinds of lump ores and acid pellet intuitively. Before softening, both two kinds of lump ore swelled and more serious for lump ore B because of its denser structure than lump ore A. The softening and melting temperature intervals are different from one another and this phenomenon contributed to the gas permeability of ore layer in the cohesive zone since the ‘ore window’ has formed. Besides, the softening and melting behaviour of mixed burdens have been studied, where it has been found that the softening and melting characteristics of mixed burden A (consisting of sinter and lump ore A) is better than mixed burden B (consisting of sinter and lump ore B) and mixed burden C (consisting of sinter and acid pellet) despite the poorest characteristics of lump ore A. The reason is that the high temperature interactivity between lump ore A and sinter is much better than lump ore B and acid pellet. The high temperature interactivity is mainly influenced by the chemical compositions, porosity and contact condition. Telfer Gold Mine combines a world-class gold and copper resource and longevity of operation as a major gold and copper producer. Telfer Gold Mine has undergone a series of transformations since mining commenced as a high-grade narrow-vein oxide open pit operation in 1977. In 1986, the open pit operation converted from a narrow-vein, high-grade operation, to a low-grade high-volume oxide mining operation utilising dump leach processing technology. Mechanised underground mining of the high-grade narrow-veins commenced in 1990. Total recovered gold production between 1977 to 1999 has totalled 5.7 million ounces. The Telfer Extension Project consists of two pre-feasibility studies, the Surface Extension Project (SEP) and the I-Series Project (ISP). The combined studies represent one of the more significant resource evaluations undertaken in the gold industry in recent times. Geological activities for the SEP pre-feasibility study have included the drill definition of a large low-grade resource within an area of 25 km2 . The surface drilling program has completed 15 000 metres of HQ3 diamond drilling and over 30 000 metres of RC between last quarter of 1998 and late-1999. The ISP pre-feasibility study is currently evaluating the resource potential of both a high-grade low-volume and a lower grade bulk mining scenario, 800 m to 1200 m below the surface of Main Dome. 15 000 metres of underground diamond drilling have been completed between last quarter of 1998 and August 1999 as part of this study. Systems and cultures have been developed to maximise safety, monitor the quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) on all aspects of the operation, and minimise impact on the environment. All data are stored in database systems, specifically designed for Telfer operations. 3D geostatistical resource estimation using ordinary kriging has been carried out for over 220 geological domains within the 25 km3 of mineralised system. Non-linear geostatistical techniques are being investigated as part of the pre-feasibility study.

Two of the problems long associated with the complete extraction of level pillars in the wide ore bodies of Broken Hill have been: (1) The high cost of maintaining level gangways through areas of slow subsidence to provide adequate trucking roads for the transport of sand filling; and (2) The difficulty and high cost of completely filling depleted areas. This paper deals with the experiments conducted to devise an apparatus for transporting, with the aid of compressed air, sandfill from the underground sand passes to the stopes and describes the sand blower which has been developed. This apparatus has to a large degree overcome the difficulties and removed much of the hazard associated with the rapid extraction of level pillars.Special attention is drawn to the sizing analysis of the sand and to the fact that it is not dry material. The Golden Cross mine is a Joint Venture between Coeur Gold New Zealand Limited, as Manager, and Viking Mining Limited. The mine is targeting Zero Lost Time Accidents as a goal.   The Golden Cross operation produces gold and silver from both underground and open pit. The mine is based on an epithermal gold-silver deposit. Treatment of ore is on a campaign basis for each ore type (i.e. underground or open pit). Milling is conventional SAG Mill and Ball Mill grinding circuit followed by carbon in pulp recovery of gold and silver. All tailing materials are treated through the Cyanisorb process to reduce cyanide levels prior to being discharged into the tailings dam.

When the first rush of miners took place on the Molyneux River, in the Dunstan Gorge, the gold was won by means of cradling the gravel, which was shovelled from the various beaches and crevices in the rock-bound sides of the river.The above method of winning the gold was only practicable when the beaches were not covered with water, hence the work was usually carried on during the winter months, the ordinary level of the river during spring and summer months being some ten or twelve feet above winter level. The melting of the spow in the Lakes water-shed being responsible for the high summer level of the river.As the available beaches were worked out, other methods of winning the gold were proposed and worked with more or less successful results the first advance being to work the bed of the river by means of a spoon dredge. The spoon was made with a round lip or ring of iron, having a steel cutting edge on one half of the circumference, at the opposite side a socket being forged to take a long spar or boom, which was securely fitted thereto. At intervals round the hoop, half-inch holes were bored to enable. a bullock-hide bag to be laced on to same. The spoon was worked from a pontoon which carried a crab winch, tackles and the necessary washing appliances to treat the washdirt lifted. Of the world's total production of gold the largest proportion comes from the more regularly consistent ore bodies, but in the aggregate an important part comes from those which are often irregular, uncertain and small. These smaller ore bodies are often high in grade and, as the capital required to work them is not large, they appeal to people seeking a quick and profitable return for a small outlay.These small mining concerns cannot afford detailed geological and petrological investigations and mapping, so they are very often dependent on local knowledge and experience which admittedly may be of really great value.Nevertheless the absence of skilled guidance may not only cause good opportunities for intelligent exploration to be lost, but discourage the seach for other ore bodies.lVIining engineers in the course of their travels in the examination of mines often come across such cases and also others where problems of finding lost ore bodies have been solved by the man on the spot. As records of cases are valuable and useful additions to the knowledge of ore occurrences, the writer now proposes to describe one such case coming under his observation in recent years.It is that of a small mine, known as the Idaho, at the southern end of the famous "Golden Mile" at Kalgoorlie (see Fig. 1). This mine has been a small and very erratic producer ever since it was abandoned by an English company which owned it forty years ago.
