In 1989, United States mine production of barite decreased 13% while world mine production decreased by 8.6%, according to the US Bureau of Mines. Consumption, sold or used by grinding plants, decreased by 21.2%. And imports decreased by 12.8%. The value of domestically produced barite, fob mine, increased 17.4%, according to the Bureau. The declared value cif US port of all imported crude barite during 1989 increased from $38.10/t ($34.56 per st) in 1988 to $40.27/t($36.54 per st). Nevada continued to be the leading producer of barite with 77% of the total, followed by Georgia and Missouri. The Bureau of Mines estimates 75% of the domestic mine production was used as a weighting agent in drilling fluids. The remaining 25% was used in barium chemicals, glass, or as a filler. Most of the production from Missouri, Georgia, and Tennessee was used in the nonoilfield sector. Of the total consumption used by grinding plants and chemical manufacturers, it is estimated that 80% was used in drilling fluids. The other 20% was used in the non-oilfield sector, including barium chemicals and fillers in paper, plastics, and glass. The tonnage consumed in the drilling fluids market decreased due to the lower average rig count during 1989. The average number of rotary rigs operating was 869, 7.2% less than the average of 936 in 1988. Crude barite imports were down 12.8% from 1988. Imports accounted for 73.8% of the barite consumed (apparent) in the US. China continued to be the leading exporter of crude barite ore to the United States with 63% of total crude ore imports. India followed with 27.4%, Peru 4.3%, Chile 2.9%, and Canada and Mexico, each with 1.1 %. About 97% of the imported barite ore was used in the oilfield sector.

INTRODUCTION Resin bolting systems continue to gain popularity in underground coal mines in the United States, and their general success under a wide range of geological and operational conditions is well documented. In 1984, 36% of all bolts used were resin-grouted systems. However, many questions dealing with basic support mechanisms and the influence of various factors on bolt effectiveness in situ remain only partially answered. The Bureau of Mines' Denver Research Center conducted a major research project to investigate the influence of installation procedures on the effectiveness of resin-grouted roof bolts. The project consisted of two main studies: the first dealing with the contribution of bearing plates to the load-carrying capability of the bolt; the second examining the relationship between installed grout column and the anchorage capacity as measured by the standard pull-out test. Additionally, a finite-element computer model and other analytical and empirical techniques were applied to aid in the basic understanding of the test procedures and to examine the load transfer mechanism in resin-grouted bolts, which to date has not been comprehensively assessed. The plate study includes field test results from two mines (Fig. 1). At these test sites two behavioral parameters were measured: the actual loads that bearing plates were subjected to when installed in conjunction with full-column resin grouted bolts, and the roof movements generated by the applied loads. Results indicate that bearing plates are subjected to varying degrees of loading, which range from conventional installation pressures of 2.2 kN (500 lb), up to a measured load of 142.4 kN (32,000 lb) when the immediate roof is shifting and deforming. These measured loads indicate that the bearing plate is an integral part of the support system. Differential sag stations, installed to monitor roof displacements in the test sites, show the highest degrees of loading occur in conjunction with the largest amounts of movement. The column-length study addresses possible reductions in anchorage capacity of "full column" bolts. These reductions could result from such factors as the loss of grout to surrounding strata, or improper mixing of catalyst and resin. Several zinc showings, exhibiting many similarities to the well-known Balmat-Edwards zinc deposits of New York State, occur within the Grenville Supergroup strata of the Mont-Laurier Basin, Quebec. Metallogenic mapping programs have revealed much of the stratigraphic control of this mineralization. This control is observed on both regional and local scales. At the regional scale, these showings are confined to the perimeter of the Mt.-Laurier Basin, while at the local scale, a definite association between the zinc mineralization and dolomitic marble horizons is clearly exhibited from detailed mapping. These new exploration guidelines have proven to be useful for base-metal exploration in the Mt.-Laurier Basin and should be applicable to the entire Grenville Province.

I'm glad this meeting is being held in New York. First, because the city is close to my home in New Jersey, only 35 minutes from Times Square ..... if I were to come to Times Square between two and three in the morning. Otherwise it takes two hours. But even more important is the fact that all of you good people from around the country and around the world will enjoy the unique experience of that warm friendly atmosphere in the greater metropolitan area, something that you won't see any place else on the face of the earth. Seriously, the greater metropolitan area has been a large part of my industrial, cultural and spiritual experience. There are many aspects of it which I find disagreeable but on net I would rather live in this area, at least for the time being, than any other area of the United States. As a consultant I find contact with financial institutions, corporate headquarters, information sources and a great many production and research facilities a valuable asset to my activity.

Atlantic Richfield Company began operating a commercial uranium solution mining project in April, 1975 in Live Oak County, 10 miles southwest of the town of George West (Figure 1). The operation is designed to produce 250,000 pounds of U303 per year and is jointly owned by Atlantic Richfield Company, Dalco and U. S. Steel. The proprietary process employed in this operation consists of injecting an alkaline leaching solution into the ore-bearing formation through a pattern of injection wells. The uranium-bearing solution is then removed through producing wells using submersible pumps in central production wells. The produced solution is pumped through a pipeline to the plant area where the uranium is extracted. The barren solution is refurbished and returned to the pattern area for reinjection. The injection field and plant site are located in the drainage of Spring Creek, a small intermittent stream tributary to the Nueces River. Land use in the area is primarily agricultural -- cattle ranching and farming -- but several producing gas fields are present in the areas as well.

Deep open-pit mines invariably affect the local and regional hydrologic systems. Pit dewatering, occurring during mining operations, puts an obvious hydrologic stress on these hydrologic systems. However, post-mining hydro-logic impacts resulting from the pit refilling with ground water following the cessation of mining activity can also be significant. Prediction of the rate at which the post-mining pit will fill with ground water is a critical aspect of assessing such long-term hydrologic impacts. Numerical ground-water flow modeling prov1des a method that can be used to predict the rate at which pits will fill with ground water.

Discussion by R.W. Hutchinson Minter's excellent recent paper (1990) on the great paleoplacer gold deposits of the Witwatersrand and its subsequent discussion (Cheney, 1991) and reply (Minter, 1991) provide an informative, interesting and up-to-date review of the geology of these unique ores and some long enigmatic questions regarding their origin. Clearly summarized by Minter (1990) are the compelling sedimentologic and stratigraphic relationships indicating that the Central Rand Group conglomerates are ancient placers and documenting the fluvio-deltaic conditions of their transport and deposition. As Minter (1991) indicates, Cheney's discussion broadens Minter's 1990 coverage of the subject by considering higher and lower stratigraphic units and by adding detailed comments concerning recently published information about metamorphic and age relationships. Cheney's discussion and Minter's reply also readdress the old controversy of epigenetic hydrothermal vs. syndepositional placer origin for these deposits. This controversy has been resurrected by: • recent recognition of hydrothermally-altered granites (HAGS) in the older Archean basement rocks that lie unconformably beneath the Dominion Group rocks north and west of the Witwatersrand depository; • recognition of greenschist metamorphic assemblages in the Witwatersrand strata; and • the presence of interpreted epigenetic mineral assemblages and textures in some of the deposits. These relationships are briefly discussed by Cheney who suggests they may result from later, superimposed metamorphism and deformation and do not prove that the gold was introduced by epigenetic/metamorphogenic processes. In his paper, Minter (1990) cited the 1986 abstract of a subsequently published paper by Hutchinson and Viljoen (1988) who also considered many of these aspects and attempted to integrate them all in abroad genetic hypothesis. In addition, they emphasized the additional important problem of determining the source for the Witwatersrand gold. Although this issue was partially addressed by Reimer (1984), Mossman and Dyer (1985) and Reimer and Mossman (1990), the question has been generally under emphasized in earlier work and was, therefore, not stressed by Minter and Cheney. Reimer (1985) also emphasized the importance of weathering of the basin's Archean hinterland and its affects on Witwatersrand sedimentation. Since the epigenetic hydrothermal hypothesis was essentially discarded in favor of placerist origin, the gold source for these great deposits has generally been attributed to the weathering of lodes in greenstones or granites of the uplifted, older Archean hinterland to the north and west. However, Hutchinson & Viljoen (1988) present evidence that this explanation is inadequate, as well as data in support of an alternative explanation. They suggest that the gold and accompanying abundant, clearly detrital and auriferous pyrite in the conglomerate reefs were derived by erosional degradation of auriferous-pyritic exhalite previously deposited, by shallow marine discharge of hydrothermal fluids, along the fault-bound northwestern margins of the Witwatersrand depository. The auriferous-pyritic exhalites were generated by fluid-rock reactions in the subsurface, particularly in the highly-altered lavas of the Dominion Group but also in adjacent basement granitic rocks. The process envisaged is comparable to that observed in sea floor hydrothermal systems today, although, in this case, it occurred at the margin of a rapidly subsiding, shallow marine or continental basin. Important evidence for this explanation is the anomalous gold content of the ferruginous, shaley strata occurring throughout the Witwatersrand Supergroup and including the distinctive contorted bed that is an iron formation. These layers have been interpreted (Hutchinson and Viljoen, 1988 and 1990) to represent the more distal, finer-grained, mixed chemical/clastic sedimentary strata. Thus, they are the basinal equivalents of the proximal, auriferous-pyritic exhalites that were deposited along the basin's margin and subsequently reworked by sedimentary processes. This gold source explanation resolves many of the enigmatic questions regarding Witwatersrand geology and the reawakened controversy between proponents of hydrothermal and placerist genetic hypotheses. The theory invokes a hydrothermal origin for the gold in the basin-margin pyritic exhalites, thus explaining the visible hydrothermal characteristics (Figs. 1 and 2). It also provides compelling evidence for placer origin by encompassing all of the fluvio-deltaic processes of clastic sedimentary transport and deposition that are clearly summarized by Minter. These characteristics result from the degradational reworking of the pyritic exhalites along the depository's margins. Fluvial reworking, transport and deltaic redeposition of this detritus, along with additional detritus carried into the depository from the hinterland, then formed the conglomerate reefs. Other enigmatic aspects of Witwatersrand geology include: • the rarity of magnetite and ilmenite (the two most common heavy minerals in placer deposits) and the contrary abundance of leucoxene in the conglomerate reefs; • the presence of differing varieties of pyrite (authigenic, allogenic, compact and porous) all of which are auriferous; and • the presence of well-rounded pebbles, even cobbles, of pyrite that, in view of the brittleness of the mineral, could not have been transported great distances from a hinterland.

1.1 GENERALIZED METHODS OF SUPPRESSING THE INFLOW OF GROUND WATER DURING THE CONSTRUCTION OF SHAFTS, DRIFTS AND TUNNELS Various methods are used to prevent or minimize the inflow of ground water into underground workings during their excavation. The two most common methods include freezing the saturated rock and grouting using cement, sodium silicate, polyurethane and/or other chemicals. Each of these technologies for combatting the inflow of ground water is effective only under specific hydrogeological conditions. For example, although the freezing of saturated ground is among the more universally adopted methods, it is designed to provide only temporary protection during construction. Before the saturated rock thaws it is necessary to emplace a waterproof liner which is labor intensive, time consuming, and expensive. Consequently, freezing is used only in exceptionally complex hydrogeological conditions, namely in those cases where the water-bearing strata consist of unstable rock or the ground water has an anomalous hydrochemistry. The classical grouting of saturated rock, carried out from the surface or from the face of the underground workings for the purpose of limiting the inflow of ground water during excavation, utilizes both cement and a variety of chemical grouts. Cement grouting has been regarded as the main method of combatting the inflow of ground water in fractured rock throughout the world. In such countries as the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG), Canada, the Republic of South Africa and Great Britain, cement grouting is the main method of reducing the inflow of ground water during the excavation of mine openings. In Great Britain and the FRG, cement grouting has been used in 80% of all shaft excavations. In the Republic of South Africa cement grouting has been used in almost 100% of all the shafts that have been constructed. The installation of grout curtains into permeable water- bearing strata significantly reduces their permeability and increases the rock strength. Grouting has the greatest effect in fractured sandstones, certain well indurated shales, fractured granites, fractured quartzites, and karstic limestones or dolomites. The following principal factors must be considered when assessing the expediency of grouting rock with cement: the geometry of the network of fracture openings, the saturated hydraulic conductivity of the fractured rock, the hydraulic head acting on the water in the rock, and the chemical composition of the ground water. On the basis of the geometry of the fractures and the thickness of each hydrostratigraphic unit, the characteristics of the cement grout are selected. As a rule, the cementing of large fractured zones with high ground water velocities is carried out using inert fillers (sand, mill slag, loam, loess, crushed limestone), special types of cement, setting accelerators, and high cement concentrations in water. Calcium chloride, soda ash, sodium silicate, sodium nitrate, amino alcohols, tin bichloride, trisulphate nitrate, and lumnite are used extensively as the setting accelerators for cement grouts. In the FRG and Poland, special cement injection compounds that embody a mixture of cement and active cement metal salts, water additives and binding substances are being used for the cementing of saturated zones with rapid ground water velocities. These reagents accelerate the rate of structure-forming reactions. In spite of the wide variety of additives used for cement grouts, the effectiveness of the method in large fractures below the water table is either poor or it leads to a very large consumption of cement due to the erosion of the grout through the cracks before it hardens. At the present time, a large number of cement types and brands are being produced by various countries. These variations permit cementing to be employed in a variety of geological conditions. However, both pure cement grout and grouts with fillers constitute unstable systems with a high water loss rate. Therefore during the grouting of finely fractured rock the cement grout's premature loss of a large amount of free water causes its consistency to increase, whereupon the grout solidifies. Consequently, it inadequately penetrates into the fine fractures of the stratum. In addition the high water loss rate in the cement grout causes unreacted cement particles to remain, which greatly reduces the grout hardness and the resulting rock strength characteristics are weakened. As a result, the binding properties of the cement are utilized perhaps up to 60%. The remaining portion is left in the grout as a filler. All these conditions significantly decrease the efficiency of the isolation effort both with respect to strength and cost. In order to expand the cement grouting method, re- search is being conducted to improve the quality of cement grout, to increase its range of application with respect to permeability control, to reduce its water loss rate and to increase its capacity to withstand the erosive and corrosive effects of poor quality ground water. The Toquepala concentrator expansion project incremented the capacity of the existing concentrator by 15,000 Metric tons per day (t/d), from 45,000 to 60,000 t/d. The plant is located in southern Peru,1,200 km southeast of Lima. The implementation plan for the expansion project was based upon an engineering and procurement contract, and a construction contract. The overall Project Management was by Southern Peru Copper Corporation (SPCC). The expansion followed a very aggressive schedule that considered a construction period of only ten months, with minimum interference to the existing facilities. Major equipment was purchased during basic engineering. This paper details the design, construction, and commissioning of the 6.4 m diameter by 10.2 m long ball mill, and the performance of the milling circuit during the first two months of operation.

INTRODUCTION Practical experience in mines with known presence of radon daughters in the mine atmosphere in Canada and elsewhere shows that a very high concentration builds up in an unventilated dead end heading. As Holaday et al1 observed, even a minimal air movement results in a drastic reduction in radon daughter concentration. It is therefore obvious that the main objective of radon daughter control in the working environment is to design the ventilation system providing an optimized flow of fresh air into the workplace, resulting in acceptable climatic conditions and achieving radon daughter concentrations resulting in exposures as low as reasonably achievable. BASIC OBJECTIVES Large mining companies, having extensive material resources and professional expertise, have utilized elaborate electrical modelling in the design of mine ventilation systems as early as 1950 (coal mining industry in Europe) and with the advance of computer modelling techniques, their utilization in ventilation systems design is on the increase. Unfortunately, these methods are usually not available to small mining companies and even the large companies might not achieve the fullest benefit from utilizing them, if proper limiting factors are not considered in the modelling. When an evaluation of a ventilation system of a mine is undertaken in literature, a measure of the amount of air supplied underground per one ton of ore mined is used as an indicator of the efficiency of the ventilation system. Yet, even the greatest amount of air forced into the mine might not result in an acceptable working environment if a proper distribution of this air into individual working places is not achieved. The volume and the age of the air are probably the two most important factors in achieving acceptable radon daughter concentrations in the workplace, but other factors also have to be considered. DIRECTOR MINE - ALCAN, NEWFOUNDLAND FLUORSPAR WORKS ST. LAWRENCE, NEWFOUNDLAND, CANADA Ventilation To illustrate the effects of the design of the ventilation system on the control of radon daughter concentration, let us review the gradual development of the ventilation system of this mine from the earlier years of its development up until its final years of operation. This mine, located near the community of St. Lawrence on the south coast of Burin Peninsula was developed in the late thirties and reached full production by 1942. Unfortunately as was customary at that time, the only source of ventilation was a natural draft. The mine was extremely wet, and no significant attention was initially given to possible health effects of dust. It was not until the mid-fifties, when a number of cases of silicosis had surfaced, that de Villiers and Windish2 observed a significant increase of lung cancer incidence among the miners in comparison to its incidence among the general population of Newfoundland. Suspicions regarding radiation as a cause of the lung cancer were expressed, but it was only in surveys taken in late 1959 and early 1960 that Windish3 and Little4 established the presence of radon daughters in the mine atmosphere in very high concentrations. Windish, de Villiers and Hurley suggested that the most likely source of the radon in the mine was the mine water which dissolved radon during its passage through the granitic country rock in the surrounding geological area. This conclusion was confirmed by analyses of water from various areas of the mine by the Atomic Energy Canada Limited laboratories. The radon values in the samples varied from 4,240 to 12,850 pCi/L5. Following the discovery of the presence of radon daughters in the mine, the company took speedy action to install mechanical ventilation for the mine. The system was not designed as a total unit, but fans were installed rather on a trial and error basis. The basic system installation began in March 1960 and was completed by 1962. It remained basically unchanged with only minor modifications until August 1973 when a wholly new, redesigned ventilation system was implemented. A schematic section of the mine and its ventilation system for the period prior to March 1960 is given in Figure "A", for the period 1960-1973 in Figure "B", and for the period after August 1973 in Figure "C". The ventilation system prior to 1960 is not known. All workings of the mine were ventilated only by natural ventilation. If any measurements of airflows at different or any times of the year ever existed, no records have been preserved. The very minimal natural ventilation was augmented by "blowing" air from compressed air supply lines and exhaust air from drills. It is known that the compressor capacities of the mine were limited and therefore no significant air movement was probably created by the "blowing".

An accidental fire load is one of the major loads considered in design of segmental linings in transit tunnel. Typically, a two-dimensional coupled thermo-mechanical finite element analysis (FEA) is conducted. The conventional approach involves using standard fire curves (temperature-time curves) which can lead to a significant overestimation of fire load and tunnel lining thickness in metro tunnels. The focus of this paper is on the cutting-edge approach, using 3D computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis of real train fires in metro tunnels and coupled thermo-mechanical finite element analysis (FEA) to accurately and cost-effectively design fiber-reinforced concrete (FRC) segmental tunnel linings for large-scale metro projects.

The economics of the producer-consumer interface - the route from mine to market - impact much more severely on specialty industrial minerals, extender/fillers that have to be sold, than on commodity industrial minerals that are basically supplied. Working capital costs for inventories and accounts receivable, fixed capital costs for storage/ warehousing/distribution, and sales and marketing costs all make the extender/filler producer much more of a marketer than a miner. The future survival of an extender/filler producer will primarily depend on the skill he has in the economics of the interface.

FALKIE, DIRECTOR, BUREAU OF MINES, U.S. DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR, BEFORE THE FALL MEETING OF THE SOCIETY OF MINING ENGINEERS, AIME, ACAPULCO, MEXICO, SEPTEMBER 23, 1974 This is a time of uncertainty on the world mineral scene. For some of the world's so-called "developed" countries, reserves and production of key minerals are running low. And, we have learned that the energy so essential in recovering and processing minerals can suddenly be in short supply. The prospects for a "no growth" situation in energy or mineral consumption are practically nil. Moreover, the world's economy is in flux, casting doubt on whether traditional mineral customers will continue to be able to buy, or for that matter, whether traditional suppliers of minerals will continue to sell. It is clear that the mineral situation is contributing to world inflationary pressures, which incidentally are most damaging to developing countries. So it is appropriate that SME members devote this session to the world mineral situation, and consider some of the opportunities and responsibilities that we will inevitably encounter as the future becomes the present. The opportunities, to me at least, are especially intriguing, I have the good fortune to be part of an organization that has an enormous capability and responsibility for dealing with mineral problems. The Interior Department's Bureaus, including the Bureau of Mines, have been around for a long time. They are. a prolific and reliable source of both mineral information and mineral technology.

Environmental management and planning requires the integration of large volumes of disparate information from many sources and the analysis of this information with efficient tools for assessment and evaluation. Effective methods of communication that allow interactive participation in the planning, assessment and decision-making processes are also very important. The VULCAN software package from Maptek (Pty) Ltd comprises a large number of 3D graphical tools within an interactive 3D interface called ENVISAGE. These tools are designed and developed to help engineers and scientists to identify and solve environmental problems. The combination of VULCAN 3D Software and the I-SiTE 3D Laser Imaging system leads to powerful solutions for environmental management. This paper presents the capabilities of this integrated system and its applications for environmental management.

This paper reviews the development of the David Bell Mine, from early exploration, through discovery, construction, start-up, underground development, and production. Details are provided regarding the mine development, the mechanized cut and fill stope production, the proposed long-hole stoping with delayed backfilling mining method for the lower levels and the cyanide leach carbon-in- pulp concentrating process. The mine development remains on schedule and under budget with results very much as predicted in the feasibility study.

About 45-50% of the coal mined in the U.S. passes through coal preparation plants; east of the Mississippi River this number increases to about 75-80%. Although the cost for coal preparation is worthwhile to some, the coal industry faces the challenges of continuing downward pressure on the price of coal and the impact of new environmental regulations. Coal preparation, as commercially practiced today, is an effective process achieving 75-803 ash reduction, 15-8m trace element reduction, and 85-90% Btu recovery; it is less effective for pyrite reduction (35-70%), and on-line operating time (40-60%), and suffers from obsolete control systems. Methods will be discussed for reducing costs of coal preparation and improving the performance of coal preparation plants. Comments are included on equipment selection, especially for -28 mesh coal, and prep plant operation and control practices. Btu recovery, ash and pyrite reduction, fines processing including dewatering and slurry fuel use options are emphasized. Trace element removal and expert control systems for maximization of prep plant operation also will be highlighted.

Direct observations of intergranular fracture during comminution are very difficult to make. The best indirect method is based on the measurement of interphase area before and after comminution. If intergranular fracture does not occur, the interphase area should be conserved during comminution, but it should decrease if significant amounts of intergranular fracture occur. The interphase area per unit volume can be determined by image analysis from measurements on sections of the unbroken ore and on sections through the particles after comminution. However, the measurements must be corrected for the effects of image resolution on the measured phase and particle perimeters. A correction procedure was developed, and the true interphase perimeter per unit volume was measured before and after comminution in a sample of chromite-serpentinite ore and two samples of Witwatersrand pyritic quartzite. The pyritic quartzite showed no significant evidence of grain- boundary fracture while the chromite-serpentinite showed a significant decrease in interphase area per unit volume of chromite, indicating that intergranular fracture occurred.

LITHOPROBE is a collaborative, multidisciplinary research project that is providing new insights into the tectonic evolution of the North American continent through its work within 10 study areas across Canada. For the mining industry, such results provide a well-constrained regional framework and better understanding of the tectonic processes that lead to the development of ore deposits. In mining camps, seismic-reflection methods have proven effective in imaging shallow to moderately dipping lithologic contacts as well as structural features and, in some cases, have been used for the direct detection of orebodies. Here, short case histories are provided for the Abitibi greenstone belt (VMS deposits) in Quebec and the Thompson nickel belt in Manitoba.

In Chinese coal mines, extraction of deep, highly gassy soft coal seams sandwiched between soft floor and soft roof in complicated geology is commonly encountered. How to safely and efficiently excavate such seams is a very significant and important problem. It has been a focused research area in recent years. By combining the characteristics of fully mechanized longwall mining methods such as large cutting height and mining along the dip, an integrated method and technologies for the Zhangji Coal Mine were developed. This technology includes the design of a complicated geological exploration system, optimization of mining method and working face parameters, control of rock pressure and high levels of gas, reliability model of the production system, and selection and compatibility of equipment. Engineering practice shows that the integrated technology was successful in mining these complicated seams. This study not only enriches the mining method, but also improves the coal mining practice, especially ensuring both safety and productivity under complicated geological conditions.
