Stillwater Mining Company’s, Nye Operation has been producing PGM concentrate since 1987.Several expansions have allowed for increasing capacity from the initial rate of 500 tons per day, to its present capacity of 3,000 tons per day. The expansions were performed with minimal impact upon production and maximum utilization of the existing equipment. The latest expansion incorporates a 6’ X 18’ SAG mill, 13’ X 20’ Ball mill, pebble crusher, rougher flotation cells, 1250 Hp tertiary grinding mill, middling and scavenger flotation cells, and cleaner column flotation cells. This paper will describe the concentrator flow sheet, and controls for improved concentrator performance.

Newmont has been producing gold from the Carlin Trend for over 45 years. Naturally the focus, scale and complexity of the operations have changed considerably over this time. Newmont discovered and developed the Carlin Main ore body which is located about 32 km (20 miles) north of Carlin Nevada. The property was developed as a one mine one gold mill treatment plant operation which produced about 6,200 kg (200,000 Troy ounces) of dorè gold bars per year. The initial mine, mill and gold refining facilities were relatively small in comparison to today?s standards. The milling circuit used the Merrill-Crowe zinc precipitation process to recover dissolved gold and prepare a concentrated precious metal ?precipitate? to be melted into a dorè bar for sale.

"In his 1989 book, The New Realities, Peter F. Drucker, Clark Professor of Social Science at Claremont Graduate School, Claremont, CA, stated: “Information is data endowed with relevance and purpose. Converting data into information thus requires knowledge. And knowledge, by definition, is specialized” (p. 209).The discipline of mineral valuation is knowledge-based and requires a mineral valuer to collect, analyze and interpret data that are material to a mineral-valuation assignment. In so doing, the valuer turns the data into information (data come first, followed by information as determined by the mineral valuer) for use by the client (from whom the valuer obtained the mineral-valuation assignment) and other intended users. The valuer uses his or her experience and education (each valuer’s knowledge base) supported by a foundation built upon competency, materiality and transparency, the three pillars of mineral valuation (minerals valuation, mineral-property valuation).The International Mineral Valuation Standards Template (IMVAL Template), third edition dated May 2018, defines mineral valuation as: “The estimation of the value of a mineral property in money or monetary equivalent. The word ‘valuation’ can be used to refer to the estimated value (the valuation conclusion) or to refer to the preparation of the estimated value (the act of valuing)” (p. 14).Furthermore, the IMVAL Template clearly separates valuation from evaluation: “The template deals with valuation, which is distinct from evaluation. The distinction inherent in these defined terms is that valuation addresses the estimation of value of a mineral property, whereas evaluation addresses the broader assessment of a mineral property for an investment decision (p. 2).”This is an important difference because the minerals industry commonly makes investment decisions using feasibility studies to evaluate a proposed mineral development and production project. The purpose of such investment-decision analysis is distinctly different from valuation of a mineral property, no matter where that property lies upon the mineral explorationdevelopment- production-reclamation timeline (Fig. 1). Valuation involves terms such as market value, just compensation, fair value, etc., whereas investment-decision analysis is concerned with the economic viability of a given proposed project. Although feasibility analysis and market valuation can both use discounted cash flow (DCF) analysis as a tool, the formulation of the DCFs and their interpretation are different."

The aggregates industry is the largest minerals industry in the United States producing over 2.6 billion metric tons of crushed stone, sand and gravel annually. Approximately 5% of that production is fine material, passing a 75-micron mesh sieve. Of that amount, about 77% is not sold and represents one of the major industry issues. The material accumulates in stockpiles and settling ponds having an operational and economic impact on the site’s bottom line. Many factors cause this material to be produced: from blasting and processing techniques all the way to end use specifications.

By understanding the ore breakage characteristics and utilising comminution circuit modelling, the benefits of SAG mill feed size manipulation can be readily assessed. This paper looks at the benefits and problems of total secondary crushing of mill feed and advocates partial secondary crushing as a means of improving grinding efficiency for certain hard ores. Case studies are reviewed for new and existing SAG mill circuits.

Education in the mineral engineering professions is in the same flux and turmoil as is the entire minerals industry. Overcapacity in some areas, undercapacity in others, and the constant fear of substitution plague education as well as industry. The exercise in long-range planning that The Society of Mining Engineers has undertaken gives an excellent opportunity to examine the problems and the opportunities in minerals engineering education. Charge to the Committee The Educational Activities Committee was asked by the Long-Range Planning Commission (LRPC) to examine SME's future role with respect to "education policy, role and organization, education department, education board, continuing education, short courses, and extension courses." This examination is timely. It follows a reorganization of SME's Education Board designed to make the Board more efficient in its operation, more responsive to the needs of education, and more active in the setting of Society policy on education. In addition, the roller-coaster cycle of boom and bust experienced by the mineral industry in the last decade has been shared by the minerals schools and has created enrollment problems that need to be addressed promptly. Within SME there is much experience on educational issues to draw from and many problems to solve. Major Premise The committee is emphatic in espousing the philosophy that SME should support, in word and in deed, the highest possible standards that can be maintained by the minerals schools. As guardians of the various mineral engineering and scientific professions (geological engineering, geophysical engineering, mineral engineering, mineral processing engineering, and mining engineering), it is appropriate for the Society to be a watchdog for academic standards. One member of the committee put it succinctly, "We need to educate engineers and technologists, not muckers." A vital and profitable minerals industry needs professionals educated by good teachers, equipped with the most modern available methods, techniques, and knowledge, and challenged by their education to be innovative contributors to their chosen profession. Such education occurs only if it takes place in an institution that is vital and challenging. SME can enhance the quality of its membership if it works to maintain the standards of the schools that graduate new members. Education does not end with the award of a degree. It is appropriate for SME to strive for continued technical quality of its membership. To this goal, SME should maintain its attention to the process of licensing professional engineers, and it must continue and expand its efforts in continuing education for the membership. Recommendations for Action The following recommendations were submitted by the committee and then amended slightly by the full commission. The recommendations have support from the SME Board. • SME Education Coordinator and Staff Department of Education - Staff support for education should be provided by someone with experience in engineering education who would be appointed as SME Education Coordinator for all educational activities: accreditation, continuing education, student affairs, and liaison with mineral schools. The Board has approved an Education Coordinator and the position has been filled. • Advisory Committee on Education - SME should recognize, by amending its committee structure, that functions important to education are filled by SME-appointed representatives to the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), its Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC), and Technology Accreditation Commission (TAC). It is suggested that these persons, plus the chairman of the Education Council, plus two other persons appointed by the SME Board, form an advisory committee on education. Under a DOE-funded project, four advanced flotation technologies (the Jameson cell, the Outokumpu HG Tank Cell, an open column and a packed column) were evaluated at the benchscale to identify the technology or combination of technologies that best improved fine coal recovery and reduced processing costs. The results indicated that two-stage application of the Jameson and packed column cells provided the optimal performance. Subsequently, proof-of-concept scale testing was conducted at the Cyprus Emerald Coal Preparation Plant. The results confirmed that levelized production costs were lower using two-stage cleaning with the Jameson cell followed by the packed column.

At the present time, whether an electric utility uses high-sulfur coal is largely determined by geographical location, clean air legislation, and the age of the power plant. Acid rain legislation may well be the new force to change the use of high-sulfur coal. A number of coal papers were presented at the SME Fall Meeting in St. Louis, MO, Sept. 1986. These papers discussed high-sulfur coal in relation to its economics, trends and prospects, value of cleaned coal, and coal-cleaning technology. The Clean Air Act of 1970 required the reduction of SO, emissions from most stationary electric-generating plant to 0.5 kg (1.2 lbs) SO2, per million Btu of heat input. It was possible for many plants to utilize lower-sulfur coal or a mixture of high-sulfur and low-sulfur coal to meet this emission requirement. This 1970 act greatly increased the use of low-sulfur western coal. The 1978 amendment to the Clean Air Act required all new plants to use Flue Gas Desulfurization (FGD) to meet a requirement of 70% reduction of potential SO2 emissions to 0.3 kg (0.6 lb) SO2 per million Btu of heat input. With the requirement to use FGD, there was little or no demand for low-sulfur western coal in new eastern power plants. If' new acid rain legislation is enacted, it likely will require sizeable reductions in SO2, emissions by existing coal users. There might then be a shift to greater use of low-sulfur coals. The low-sulfur coals could come from either western or eastern mines or from cleaned eastern coals. Economics will dictate the approach older power plants will take to meet new regulationsuse FGD or low-sulfur coal. Coal use for electric power generation has changed from 1970 to 1985. Table 1, (Land, preprint 86-333) shows the change. The table shows that in 1985, US utilities used about 255 Mt (280 million st) of high-sulfur coal. Some 45 to 54 Mt (50 to 60 million st) of high-sulfur coal is being used in plants equipped with FGD and most of this use is in eastern states. This leaves 200 to 209 Mt/a (220 to 230 million st) of high-sulfur coal being used without FGD treatment. These plants are at risk if acid rain legislation is passed. Most of these plants are in the east and are more difficult to supply with low-sulfur coal. Estimates range from $20 to $30 billion capital investment and from $5 to $9 billion dollars per year operating costs to reduce SO2, emissions from those old medium-to-high-sulfur coal-burning plants. G. W. Land, (preprint 86-333), also presents tables relating to power generating costs and coal types. The author's tables are extracted from Land's tables IV and V. Table 2 here presents costs for a new plant. This includes the impact of different heat rates, fuel costs, fuel qualities, operating and maintenance costs, labor costs, and waste disposal costs. Table 3 compares estimated costs to retrofit an older plant with a limestone scrubber versus switching the same plant to low-sulfur eastern or western coal. Costs of switching include upgrading the electrostatic precipitator and - with western coal - costs of derating. Bhagwat, (preprint 86-325), details the trends in high-sulfur coal markets from 1974 to 1984. He also gives some prospects for high-sulfur coal markets, 1984 to 1994. The prospect depends mostly on whether acid rain legislation is enacted. By 1994, if New Source Performance Standards (NSPS) continue to be applied, high-sulfur coal demand from six mid-west and eastern states is expected to increase by 27 Mt (30 million st). • L. A. "The silver nitrate titration method is a rapid and acceptably accurate means of analyzing for cyanide in leach solutions that contain primarily free cyanide. However, in leach solutions containing elevated levels of copper, the titrimetric method overestimates the concentration of free cyanide and underestimates the concentration of weak and dissociable (WAD) cyanide. The authors have developed a modified potentiometric (MP) titration method for determining WAD cyanide that overcomes issues associated with high copper levels in solution. The new MP-WAD method involves addition of a chemical ligand to the sample prior to silver nitrate titration to release cyanide bound to copper. Once released from copper, cyanide in solution is no longer affected by the presence of copper, and titration results are quantitative rather than empirical. In multiple laboratory trials with synthetic solutions and complex actual leach solutions, analytical results obtained with the new MP-WAD method were found to be within about ±5% of analyses obtained with the USEPA OIA-1677 WAD cyanide analytical method.IntroductionThe silver nitrate titration method is widely used to estimate the concentration of cyanide in leach solution for purposes of cyanidation process control. Cyanide determined by silver nitrate titration is commonly referred to as “free” cyanide, but frequently should be referred to as “titratable” cyanide. By definition, free cyanide is the sum of the concentrations of aqueous hydrogen cyanide HCN(aq) and the cyanide anion CN- (ASTM, 2010). Titration will only yield a reasonably accurate measurement of free cyanide when metal-cyanide complex concentrations (e.g., cadmium, copper, mercury, nickel, silver and zinc) in solution are low. In other words, titration will only yield a reasonably accurate measurement of free cyanide if the solution primarily contains free cyanide."

The trend in both the metallic and non-metallic mining industry is toward processing increasing y higher tonnages of lower grade ores, thereby resulting in a growing interest in progressively larger volume individual machines in the flotation circuit. Because of the relatively high cost of large flotation machine development and evaluation, it is important to establish a rational basis by which the existing smaller flotation machine experience can be extrapolated to establish the configuration of the next larger family of flotation machines with a minimum of development modification in the field. This paper reviews the R&D approach used in translating smaller flotation machine experience to establish the configuration of a 1000 cu ft (2B.3 cu m) induced air machine. Internal cell hydrodynamic principles, which governed this extrapolation, and cell (liquid) surface and froth management considerations will be reviewed, and prototype machine mill tests will be summarized.

Flotation has long served as the foundation for sulfide mineral recovery. As ore grades decline, however, this traditional approach is being pushed to the limit. Nowhere is this more evident than in the challenge of recovering coarse, partially liberated particles — an area where conventional flotation systems typically underperform due to excessive turbulence. As a result, valuable coarse minerals are often lost to tailings. Fine grinding has become the default solution, although with the added burden of higher operating costs and more challenging tailings disposal. To address the challenge of coarse particle recovery, Eriez developed the HydroFloat, a technology that uses a novel fluidized-bed approach to extend the upper particle size range of flotation significantly. The HydroFloat can recover particles exceeding 0.5 mm in diameter with a sulfide surface expression as little as 2 percent. Coarse particle recovery allows for optimization of comminution circuits for coarse gangue rejection before fine grinding. A substantial increase in overall tailings particle size provides higher water recovery due to improved drainage and allows for consideration of a dry, stacked tailings option instead of a tailings dam/impoundment. The technology’s transformative potential has not gone unnoticed. In recognition of its impact, Eriez was honored with the 2024 Robert E. Murray Innovation Award, commonly referred to as the Murray Award, by the Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration. This prestigious award was established in 2017 to recognize organizations that advance the mining industry through the implementation of technical innovation. The HydroFloat stands as a fitting example of how creative thinking and industry collaboration can solve long-standing technical challenges.

The terms “powerful” or “selective,” which are commonly used to characetrize frothers, have intuitive rather than scientific meaning. A research program has been set out to study fundamental properties of the flotation frothers and to identify the tests which can provide information needed to characterize and classify such flotation agents.

Roadheaders are gaining widespread acceptance in North America as a means for mechanical tunnel excavation. Until recently, almost all of the large-scale North American tunnel projects were excavated one of two ways ? the tried and true drill-and-blast method or with the use of tunnel boring machines (TBM), the hi-tech super-excavators. TBMs enjoyed fast-growing popularity worldwide as TBM manufacturers offered greater technology to meet the demand of the civil tunnel industry in the late 20th century. Recently, though, more tunnel projects, large and small, can thank the brute force of a roadheader for getting the job done.

Paul Y. – SELI Joint Venture had been contracted to build the longest section of the Strategic Sewage Disposal Scheme (SSDS) – Stage I. This involved two tunnels under urban and marine areas excavated by high performance hard rock open type TBMs operated from deep shafts. A specific ground treatment program was developed using advance probing and grouting to control water inflow into the excavations. The article describes: the technologies adopted, the experienced problems, the encountered productions and their interrelation with the water inflow amounts, the possible improvement in the technologies for the excavation of the future stages of the same project as well of any other project under similar conditions.

The main forces acting on minerals in conventional size reduction units are compression, impact, attrition, and/or abrasion. Usually a combination of these forces shares the breakage action of the minerals with one or more of these forces dominating the breaking action, depending on the machine used. The present work concentrates on the behavior of quartz when stressed with compression force in a confined piston die. Several size fractions within the size range minus 10 mm to plus 0.85 mm were compressed in the piston die. The measured parameters are compression load, bed thickness, displacement as a result of compression, rate of displacement, and the size distribution of the products. It was found that the size distributions are, to some extent, different from those produced by the ball mill or the high-pressure roll mill. This is mainly because of the differences in the type of the acting forces in each case. It was also found that the cumulative weight of the distributions is reasonably normalizable with respect to the median particle size of the product. The specific energy expended is inversely proportional to the median size of the products, and the reduction ratios, xf/xp, are directly proportional to the applied compression force, and hence, to the specific energy expended. A simple model is suggested for predicting the particle size distribution as a function of the expended energy. The calculated values of the size distributions match fairly well with the experimental values, except at the very low energy levels, where most of the energy expended is consumed in the rearrangement and packing of the particles in the confined space with little or no breakage.

Faults, sandstone channels, and abandoned mine workings present severe safety hazards, disrupt mining, and necessitate costly precautions or discontinuance of operations. In addition to fault detection, mining companies have a need to map discontinuities such as seam thinning and previously mined areas in both longwall and room-and-pillar operations. Initial field tests demonstrated successful generation and propagation of higher order guided wave modes. Theoretical studies indicate potential for improved resolution by sensing small details in the coal seam and roof structure. Controlled-waveform source transducers and specialized detectors are particularly useful to preferentially excite and detect the Love (SH) and Rayleigh-type (P-SV) waves, including the higher frequency modes. The distinct observation of reflections using the transducers in the shear wave mode makes feasible the detection of the water-filled voids.

The main objective of batch grinding modeling is the estimation of the product particle size distribution over time or specific energy input to the mill. So far, the developed analytical methods require often complicated calculations which are timeconsuming. Thus, more simple approaches that allow the reliable prediction of the complete product size distribution need to be developed. In the present paper, an approach, based on the population balance model (PBM), that reliably predicts the product size distribution is proposed. In order to enable this, the simplified form of the fundamental batch grinding equation was transformed into the well-known Rosin–Rammler (R-R) distribution, thus allowing the determination of the breakage rate for each grinding period. A time-dependent breakage rate framework was developed where the traditional linear theory of the PBM is considered a partial case. This approach allows the deviations from the linear theory to be categorized and the degree of the acceleration-deceleration of the breakage rate to be predicted. Modeling results were validated by laboratory grinding studies using two homogeneous materials, quartz and marble, and one heterogeneous, a limonitic laterite. The experimental data revealed that grinding exhibits non-first-order behavior and the degree of deviation from the linear theory depends on the tested material. The reliability of the proposed model was validated with the use of the distribution modulus n, the a value of the breakage rate parameter, and the optimum n values that minimize the sum of the differences between the experimental and estimated particle size distributions.

"It is important to make a clear distinction on the scope of work of the Global Mining Standards and Guidelines (GMSG) guideline for sampling grinding circuits. Many mineral processing practitioners are familiar with the sampling and surveying of comminution circuits, in particular grinding circuits, for performance diagnosis and the identification of optimization potential. These surveys often provide information for population balance modelling of individual comminution and classification unit processes, and consequently require a large amount of information to calibrate and validate the unit models. As a result, these surveys are labour intensive, somewhat expensive, depending on internal capabilities of the mine site or company and have a long time span from initial planning to final reporting. They also require a high level of expertise to process the survey data, simulate the circuit and make sensible recommendations on follow up actions.As a result of these factors, full grinding circuit surveys are not a common occurrence at a large number of processing facilities, and several years may pass before follow up surveys are conducted. In the ensuing gap between surveys, the efficiency of the grinding circuit must often be taken on faith, and this is considered an unacceptable lapse in an environment of strained natural resources and low commodity prices.To support the rapid and productive energy efficiency analysis being promoted by the ICE working group, a much simplified survey and analysis process is required. The process reflected in the GMSG guideline is indeed more conducive to frequent analysis, at a skill level that is well within the capabilities of the average plant metallurgist. As a result, it becomes feasible to conduct mini-surveys of plant performance, which can be used to quickly and precisely diagnose the high level impact of process changes. These methods can also be manipulated by an experienced practitioner to provide sufficient information for modelling of the circuit to estimate the impact of process changes, allowing an initial rate and rank exercise to focus plant optimization efforts."
