Sealaska Corporation, the Alaska Native Regional Corporation of Southeastern Alaska, was organized under the laws of the state of Alaska pursuant to the federal Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act of 1971. Large areas of Sealaska's 630,000-acre (250,000 hectare [ha]) fee subsurface holdings are underlain by carbonate, and while much of this material is assumed to be common variety limestone and lesser dolomite, at least two areas in the Silurian Heceta Limestone contain high-quality limestone at tidewater. This limestone has many potential commercial uses. On northern Prince of Wales Island, about 90 miles (144 km) north-northwest of Ketchikan, resource development at Sealaska's Calder deposit has established a reserve of 13 mil- lion short tons (st) (12 million metric tonnes [mt]) of carbon- ate rock containing an average of greater than 98 percent CaC03, approximately 0.5 percent MgO, less than 0.5 per- cent Si02, and approximately 0.15 percent Fe203, with insolubles averaging less than 0.5 percent and an average Hunter Brightness of 92.07 for the -150 mesh grind (with a bright- ness cutoff of 90). The deposit is open at depth and to the south. Ultimate reserves will likely be several times those currently established. In 1998, Sealaska began mining the Calder deposit, with about 100,000 st (90,000 mt) produced, and also completed a marine terminal one half-mile (800 m) from the deposit. The terminal can load ships up to 680 feet (200 m) in length at a rate of 2,000 st (1,800 mt) per hour. 0 m) in length at a rate of 2,000 st (1,800 mt) per hour. On Dall Island at Breezy Bay, about 60 miles (100 km) southwest of Ketchikan, Sealaska has identified a limestone reserve in excess of 150 million st (135 million mt) that (based on 18 surface samples distributed evenly over about a section of land) contains about 98 percent CaC03, and less than 0.5 percent MgO, 0.5 percent Si02, and 0.15 percent Fe203. Brightness of the Breezy Bay carbonate is considerably less than at Calder. Five samples of brighter material from Breezy Bay returned brightness analyses in the high 80s and low 90s; average brightness is probably below the mid- 80s. Sealaska has also identified a deposit containing more than 19 million st (17 million mt) of similar rock near View Cove, a few miles south of Breezy Bay.

More than 90 percent of America's potash is produced at Carlsbad and IMC accounts for about one-fifth of that amount, Since the Company began operations in 1941 it has mined nearly 50 million tons of ore. Of the two types of ore mined at Carlsbad the principal tonnage is sylvinite in which sylvite-potassium chloride-is the ore mineral. It is produced by IMC as well as by all other mines in the area, In addition to sylvinite IMC is the exclusive producer of langbeinite ore--potassium-magnesium sulfate. From its two ores, International produces a spectrum of 8 high-quality agricultural and industrial chemical products.

This paper discusses the subject of "Improving Contracting Methods" from the owners point of view, particularly the public. An overview is given of the work of the U.S. National Committee on Tunneling Technology and some apparent results of the implementation of these recommendations or lack thereof. Selected recommendations that are not being implemented are discussed as to the the desirability and the possible impact of their implementation. Impediments to acceptance of the recommendations are identified and solutions proposed. The difference in the flexibility, attitudes and approaches of owners, public, quasi-public and private, toward improving contracting methods are discussed. Particular emphasis is given to the fact that the onus to improve is on the owner because they usually develop the contractual language or at least have the final decision on its content and are or should be an equal party to the contract during its administration.

Today man is taking his family back to a cave saying, "Come enter in because of what I have done". At the close of World War II Germany said if they had gone underground one year earlier with more of their operations, the war could have lasted four years longer with perhaps much of Britain devastated. The protection of the home front no longer rests with the soldier in actual combat. The battle will be won at home with the most careful kind of protection against missiles. After Nagasaki-Hiroshima Sir Winston Churchill said in substance "Up to now the Almighty has mercifully withheld from man the knowledge of these terrible weapons of destruction."

Coal is being thermally dried in ever increasing tonnages today. Because of fire and explosion hazards, it is important that drying equipment be designed for maximum safety in operation. It is well then that we review dryer design and operation to bring out those features and operating practices which will provide maximum safety to equipment and personnel. This paper presents the author's views regarding the fundamental requirements for safety and explains the Heyl and Patterson approach to the meeting of those requirements in the design and operation of their dryer.

Introduction Bulk commodity prices are ever increasing. This forces buyers and sellers in world markets to look more carefully at methods for obtaining an accurate accounting of commodity transactions in commerce and materials utilization in processes. Weighing and sampling inaccuracies can result in loss of income, product quality, and cost controls. So weighing and sampling accuracies are extremely important. They are the key components of managing the quantity and quality control aspects of bulk materials handling. This article will confine itself to the weighing systems and will deal with various aspects of system design, calibration, and operations. Emphasis will be placed on new developments and requirements in this field. Weighing methods To measure the gravimetric pull on a body being weighed (the load), the gravimetric force must be countered by an opposing force. Measuring this counter-balancing force thus becomes the measurement of weight. The conventional even-arm balance shows the concept of balancing an unknown mass with an equal known counterbalancing mass. But the loads encountered in industry generally range up to many thousands of pounds. So it is obvious that the even-arm approach is not practical. Thus, with the exception of direct load-bearing load cells, most of the weighing equipment uses some form of lever system. This is usually a combination of first- and second-class levers, to gain a mechanical advantage. These levers permit the load force to be counter-balanced and hence measured within a practical range. Lever systems not only perform this force-reducing action, they also serve to focus the load force at a single point, for convenient measurement. They align the force vertically in one direction so that measurement accuracy will not be affected by unrelated side forces. There are five basic methods of gravimetric weight measurements. That is, there are five basic types of opposing forces. • The first is the standard weight counterbalance. It uses a known weight to counterbalance the load directly or through a lever system.

Since the initiation of continuous vacuum filtration over a half a century ago, control of the performance of these units has been largely in the hands of the plant operators, Obviously there has been the introduction of variable speed drives, adjustable speed feed slurry agitation, vacuum control, etc. However, control of , filtration rate, cake moisture content, dissolved solids recovery by cake washing and dryness of solids where thermal drying is practiced is primarily up to the operators judgment and the settings he imposes on the controls he regulates, - filter cycle time, submergence, vacuum level, filter medium condition, wash water- rate, and other such factors. While this may seem to indicate that good operators are a paramount necessity, and certainly always desirable, a considerably more vital factor is a properly designed filter and filter station for the particular application. With improper design, highly skilled operator control will still leave much to be desired in the way of process performance. On the other hand, with correct design and application, the operator can easily and quickly control normal plant surges and quality variations within the flow sheet. Due to the growing complexity and inter dependency between the various processing steps in the modern flow sheet as well as the rising costs of capital investment, labor, maintenance, and losses involved with off quality product or insufficient recovery, automatic or inherent performance control of many of the unit operations within the metallurgical mill must be achieved. Continuous filtration should and can be susceptible to such control. However, as every instrument engineer knows, before control and automation can be achieved, a basic understanding of the operation is mandatory. This is primarily due to three factors. First, as in so many control applications, it may not be possible or feasible to measure the factor that it is desired to control. Thus, secondary variables that influence the major factor are substituted for control purposes. Secondly, it is always desirable to take advantage of any ?self-regulation? within the operation being performed on the equipment. In so doing, not only will automatic control be facilitated, but instrumentation is minimized while experiencing most efficient operation. Finally, automatic control is not a cure-all for improper process and equipment design and application. Hanging instruments on such an operation can be compared to constructing a sizable building on sand, Results will be disappointing.

The requirement for large diesel equipment to be certified for operation in potential gassy mine conditions in western oil shale mines motivated a design engineering project to develop a dry exhaust conditioner system to replace traditional wet scrubber technology. A dry exhaust conditioner for a 600 hp diesel engine was designed and fabricated for retrofitting into a 600 hp underground haul truck. The engine conditioner package was taken through a simulated certification process at the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) Approval and Certification Center to refine test procedures and to uncover any flaws in the dry exhaust conditioner technology. The engine/exhaust system was then installed in an underground haul truck to demonstrate mine-worthiness of the system. No inherent features were discovered that would prevent the system from meeting test requirements. However, the tests did point out several deficiencies in the prototype design.

In China, an enormous amount of Au-Ag bering calcines, residues and tailings are produced each year from various sources in mining, metallurgical and chemical industries. For a long time, these materials have been either stored up in dumps or disposed of into rivers, resulting in not only waste of resources but also severe environmental pollution. It is therefore of great significance, both from economical and public welfare points of view, to recover efficiently and make full use of the metallic values from these miscellaneous materials. In this paper the physical and chemical properties of these Au-Ag bearing calcines, leached residues and tailings are described and the current status of their utilization are briefly outlined, followed by a more detailed description of some innovative processes now in practice. Lastly, the potential prospects of gold and silver recovery from these materials in China, particularly in the Hunan province, are envisaged.

In July 1985, as the U.S. copper industry contracted and the Mexican industry expanded, a trans border pollution agreement was signed which included smelter air pollution control in the "Gray Triangle": Cananea, Nacozari and Douglas. Since then the Douglas smelter has been closed, a year earlier than initially required; though its new smelter is operating, S02 collection and acid disposal at Nacozari is yet to come; and the Cananea smelter has been un-touched. Nacozari and Cananea copper mining have expanded while a reduced U.S. copper industry has rationalized to a point of fragile profitability. As a paradigm of U.S. copper competitiveness, this paper attempts to explain the differential fortunes of copper in the two countries, to project the future of the smelter agreement as a function of acid disposal, and to consider the consequences of the politicized application of smelter pollution control in Arizona.

"Canopy air curtains on roof bolting machines have been proven to protect miners from respirable dust, preventing their overexposure to dust. Another desired application for canopy air curtains is in the compartments of shuttle cars. The challenges faced in developing the design of canopy air curtains for shuttle cars include mine ventilation rates in tandem with the shuttle car tram speeds. The resulting cab airspeeds may exceed 182 m/min (600 fpm), as found in the present study conducted in a central Appalachian underground coal mine by U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) researchers. Prior research and laboratory testing had indicated that successfully protecting a miner in high air velocities is difficult, because the clean air from the canopy air curtain is unable to penetrate through the high-velocity mine air. In this study, the dust concentrations to which a shuttle car operator was exposed were measured, and air velocities experienced by the operator were measured as well using a recording vane anemometer. The results indicate that the highest exposure to respirable dust, 2.22 mg/m3, occurred when the shuttle car was loading at the continuous miner, where the average airspeed was 48 m/min (157 fpm). While tramming, the operator was exposed to 0.77 mg/m3 of respirable dust with an average airspeed of 62 m/min (203 fpm). This study indicates that a canopy air curtain system can be designed to greatly reduce an operator’s exposure to respirable dust by providing clean air to the operator, as the majority of the operator’s dust exposure occurs in air velocities slower than 61 m/min (200 fpm). IntroductionThe U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) issued contract #200-2015-63485 to develop a canopy air curtain for coal mine shuttle cars with Marshall University and J.H. Fletcher & Co. (Salem, Begley and Ross, 2016). The proposed design maintains a design similar to that of a roof bolter canopy air curtain by providing filtered air through a blower over the operator. The plenum, which will provide uniform airflow over the operator, is anticipated to be built into the shuttle car canopy. One of the main interferences with a canopy air curtain is ventilation airflow perpendicular to the plenum airflow (Engel, Johnson and Raether, 1987). This ventilation airflow can shear the downward flow from the plenum, and this shear can reduce the effectiveness of the canopy air curtain by either disrupting the downward flow or allowing contaminated mine air into the canopy air curtain zone of protection."

Not quite a year ago, during a speech to a group of mining professionals in Washington, DC, the subject centered around the long-range importance of conducting research projects and how much that research needs to specifically apply to health and safety matters in our industry. The point was made about the critical need to work together with government, private industry, labor organizations and academia speaking with a unified voice as we all march into the future together. The fundamental benefits of competitive research were mentioned -- to improve our quality of life, to develop our energy resources, to achieve a safe and healthy environment and to ensure long-term economic growth. Very importantly, emphasis was given to the natural link that makes my agency, the Mine Safety and Health Administration, and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health -- NIOSH -- the beneficiaries of each other's findings.

Leonard and Newman (1989) describe concepts and plans of their forthcoming project designed to increase the bulk density of broken coal at various stages of its production and handling. This is an excellent idea and something that will certainly be useful to the coal mining industry worldwide. The authors seek to achieve bulk density increase by "reducing oreliminating, through chemical additives and engineering design, particle voidage and enhance particle consolidation trickling between the point of breakage (at the face) and loading (in the shuttle car) to increase coal bulk density and productivity." In the paper, they present some supporting results of bulk density versus moisture, with or without oil addition, from the steel industry research. Unfortunately, the paper contains many misconceptions and half-truths that detract from an otherwise excellent objective of the project of increasing bulk density by reducing particle voidage -"the bottom line evaluator." Procedure for approval by the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers of a new source of aggregate is in three phases. Phase 1 consists of an investigation of a quarry or proposed quarry by district geologist and laboratory geologist and/or petrographer. The quarry face or suitable outcrop is logged in detail or, if exposures are poor, cores may be taken to determine whether further investigations are warranted. Phase 2 consists of thorough laboratory testing. Cores and crushed material are subjected to a number of acceptance and quality tests for soundness, absorption, abrasion, reactivity, and other properties. Petrographic analysis is also made. Phase 3 is a physical and economic study of the site and involves determining quantity of stone avail- available, amount-and character of overburden, condition of haul roads and distance to rail shipping point, plant flow sheets and capacity, aggregate sizes produced, and approximate price of material at plant.

Production of building materials such as are stones, sand, gravel etc., is characterized by a relatively low economic value and requires reasonable transport costs. That is why we are often faced, in our practical work, with the fact that within the framework of a relatively small area several open pits of building materials are, developed side by side while neither ecological, urban and spatial nor location factors have been taken into consideration. Numerous locations together with heterogeneous factors. point undoubtedly to the problem of planning the open pits locations for building mateials as a very serious and complex one. Even when certain localities are in question, it is rather a difficult task to present a real state and encompass all the, important location factors by mathematical model ling. This paper presents one of such models for solving the problem of selecting a location for building materials open pit.

The use of chemical additives in ultrafine grinding will be reviewed in this paper for the case of grinding of quartz in solutions of surfactants and inorganic electrolytes including some dispersants under different conditions of pH and ionic strength. Mechanisms are examined by correlating the grinding effects with those obtained for the influence of these chemicals on zeta potential, pulp fluidity and flocculation/dispersion characteristics. The analysis suggests grinding depends mainly on the state of aggregation of the ground products in- side the mill and the pulp fluidity. Implications of the observed effects on ultrafine grinding in general are discussed.

Roofbolts with expansion anchors have been used at White Pine for more than twelve years, but always with an understanding that their performance was not entirely satisfactory. Some bolts fell out, some were obviously loose, and, when roof failures did occur, very few bolts actually broke. Obviously, there was an anchorage problem. A program was started in May, 1967, to define the problem and to solve it. This paper describes briefly those parts of the program which led to the development of a roofbolt assembly which performs much better in the medium-hard rocks at White Pine. As a result of the changes, significant improvements were found in the torque:tension, tension loss, and pull tests.

Background The mine is located in Ebensburg, Cambria County, PA. Cambria County is located within the Allegheny Mountain section of the Appalachian Plateau Province. The geologic structures in the mine area included folds, faults, joints and cleats in the coal. These geologic structures seem to have genetic relationships with the Allegheny Front (lannacchione and Puglio, 1979). The mine's geologic structures have been influenced mainly by Ebensburg Anticline and Wilmore Syncline (Watson, 1979). Current longwall panels lay along the western limb of the Wilmore Syncline oriented south 30° west. Surface topographic relief in the area is less than 152 m (500 ft) and overburden thickness varies from 183 to 244 m (600 ft to 800 ft). The coal seam in the mine is part of the Lower Kittanning Formation. The thickness of the B-seam is the subject of discussion. It varies from 1.2 to 1.5 m (48 to 60 in.) and consists of two parts. The lower part is 1.1 to 1.2 m (44 to 48 in.) of soft coal and the remainder is bony coal. The coal seam dips slightly from 0° to 6° to the east-south direction. Panel entries are driven 61 m (200 ft) wide, consisting of three 5.5 m (18 ft) wide entries and two pillars 24.4 x 30.5 m (80 x 100 ft) centers. The mine has a history of cutter roof problems in the entries (Fig. 1) that has delayed the advance rate of entry development considerably and the cost of maintaining those entries is very high due to the requirement of very heavy artificial supports (Fig. 2). Due to excessive convergence in the headgate, installation of additional support and often resetting of steel beam, to provide enough clearance, in these entries imposed additional delay during the retreat of the longwall face, as the shearer cuts coal adjacent to the headgate and shield support at the headgate needs to advance under the steel beams (Fig. 3). Silicon Carbide and Aluminum Oxide were two of the early forms of man-made abrasives often referred to as synthetic and were invented at the turn of the century. Edward G. Acheson invented Silicon Carbide in 1893 and Charles F. Jacobs filed a patent for the manufacture of fused alumina from bauxite in 1900. Jacobs' patent provided a method for tempering the alumina by reduction and fusion to a degree of hardness and toughness suitable for abrasive purposes. These two inventions are the basis of the synthetic abrasive industry today. Improvements have been made in the equipment used in the process, however the process itself remains basically the same. In 1904 A. C. Higgins observed that hot spots developed on the shell of the pot furnace used in the reduction of bauxite. He found that by spraying water on the hot spots they could be prevented and, in addition, they failed to return in the same place. Higgins reasoned that the cooling effect of the water caused the melt contacting the metal shell to freeze as an insulating autogenous refractory. This suggested that an improved furnace design could be obtained by using a metal shell which is continuously flooded with water on the exterior surface. Paradoxically, a furnace required to contain tons of molten Aluminun Oxide was thus constructed of nothing but a sheet steel shell with no refractory lining at all. A test of such an arrangement was tried by Higgins with considerable trepidation and was found to be extremely satisfactory.
