The International Tunneling Association (ITA) Working Group (WG) 22 “Information Modelling in Tunneling” has developed a guideline for the implementation of Building Information Modeling (BIM) concepts for Bored Tunneling Projects. The guideline primarily covers the use of BIM during the conceptual and delivery phases of a project. It provides Owners with an introduction to BIM, an overview of the current capabilities of BIM, and a guide for implementation for a Bored Tunnel. The document will be officially published at the World Tunnel Congress (WTC) in Copenhagen in 2022. This paper describes the need for the guideline and provides a preview of its contents.

"The “Biohydrometallurgical Center for Strategic Elements (BHMZ)” is a cooperation of 13 departments of the Technical University Bergakademie Freiberg fostering interdisciplinary research along the whole (bio-) hydrometallurgical process chain to extract indium and germanium from sulphide ores. Research comprises methods to (i) bring the respective metal from the source material into aqueous solution and (ii) different approaches to extract pure metal or metal-containing materials from the solution. Within the BHMZ the Department of Underground Mining Methods deals with the design and implementation of an underground testing facility for bacterial in-situ stope leaching in its own “Research and Educational Mine”. The intention is to investigate innovative approaches for leaching technologies by crack initiation due to hydraulic fracturing or water pressure blasting under consideration of leaching kinetics and underground conditions. It is planned to set up two testing units comparing energy input and the metal output of conventional (blasting) as well as one of the innovative technologies. Aim of subproject is to establish an innovative and sustainable method ready for up-scaling. BACKGROUND Metals like copper and zinc mainly occur as sulphide ores in nature. Due to the insolubility of these sulphide minerals the respective metal is commonly extracted by pyrometallurgical processing methods. These methods require several steps of enrichment of concentrates such as flotation and roasting (Figure 1) under extensive energy utilization. Additionally, this arouses the emission of sulphur dioxide gas which can have a negative impact on the environment in form of acid rain, as long it is not caught by sulphuric acid facilities (Schippers et al. 2011). However, to treat the ore on the surface either open pit or underground mining operations are necessary. This implies operation steps from excavating, loading, and conveying/hauling, to dumping with the sub-processes crushing and stashing. Due to the tendency of increasing depth, more complex ores and decreasing ore grades of the mineable deposits as well as increasing energy and environmental costs these conventional mining and processing methods become in general more costly and difficult to apply. Hence, hydrometallurgical processes and especially the suitability of bioleaching as an alternative in-situ method for future mining projects should be examined. Leaching by means of microorganisms is a combination of mining and processing by converting the insoluble metal into an aqueous form. This technology is an economically beneficial and environmentally friendly alternative to pyrometallurgical processing methods especially for primary and secondary low grade ores. Mainly the extraction of copper but also of zinc and lead from sulphide ores is state-of-the-art in surface leaching operations like heap and dump leaching (Figure 1)."

INTRODUCTION Shrinkage mining at Inco Ltd.'s Crean Hill mine can best be defined as a horizontal breasting method utilizing the broken ore for the mining floor and to provide wall support, with draw from a series of boxholes or draw¬points at the base of the stoping block. In choosing to shrink a given block of ore, the initial investigation centers on the ore configuration and grade, the expected ground conditions in the stoping area, the expected profit compared to alternative mining methods, the future production requirements, development lead time, the availability and type of equipment in the area, and the availability of experienced miners. These factors are weighed against other mining methods and shrinkage mining is chosen when the advantages outweigh the dis¬advantages. These will be discussed in more detail later. At Inco Ltd.'s Crean Hill mine, shrinkage mining makes up 17% of total mine production and is decreasing due to the advent of advanced blasthole techniques, notably in-the-hole drilling. Shrinkage is an adaptable mining method that is currently employed in narrow irregular ore zones, as undercuts for in-the-hole blast¬hole stopes, in ore bodies that do not extend from level to level, and in areas where quick production is required with a minimum of capital outlay or minimum develop¬ment. Two major types are currently in use which are classified on the basis of type of draw system employed. These are the utilization of load-haul-dump (LHD) equipment drawing from drawpoints, and the slusher and train method drawing from boxholes into a slusher trench and loading into a train. A third method being phased out is drawing from chutes directly into a train. In all three methods the actual stoping operation remains the same. In the initial planning of a mining block, the ore body is first located using an exploration diamond drill¬ing program. This is essentially done at a 130-m (400¬ft) spacing and it gives an indication of the amount of ore, grade of ore, the configuration of the ore body, as well as other geological features such as ground condi¬tions which will affect future mining. This drilling is done from an exploration drift 165 m (500 ft) long in the hanging wall and covers a vertical extent of 330 to 670 m (1000 to 2000 ft). However, these data are not accurate enough for detailed planning. When the de¬cision has been made to mine, a preliminary develop¬ment drill drift is driven in such a position that it can serve the dual purposes of allowing the ore body to be drilled off in detail, or of later serving as a haulage or access drift. Diamond drilling from this drift is usually on a 15-m (50-ft) grid spacing and gives adequate information for detailed planning. Utilizing the drill data, a decision is made on the mining type. For a shrinkage operation, the stoping block is ideally 49 m (150 ft) in length and a maximum of 13 m (40 ft) in width. Lengths of 65 m (200 ft) are considered a practical maximum because of the length of time the back of the stope remains open during the min¬ing of a cut. A minimum length of 13 m (40 ft) is used because the amount of time spent in opening a new cut increases in comparison with the total stoping time. The maximum width of 13 m (40 ft) is used because ex¬perience with the ground indicates that generally stope backs tend to be unstable over greater widths. However, widths of 33 m (100 ft) have been mined. A minimum width of 5 m (15 ft) is used to allow an effective draw, but in unusual cases, a width of 3 m (10 ft) has been mined successfully. The dip of the ore should not be less than 1.04 rad (60°). Angles flatter than this will not pull properly resulting in inefficient mining because of ore hang-ups on the footwall side of the stope and the need for large stagings on the hanging wall. In considering shrinkage, mining ground conditions play an important role. Strong shearing, cross faulting, or dikes are avoided. These usually cause dangerous mining conditions and an alternative safer mining method which will give adequate support to these adverse ground conditions is employed. Production requirements are taken into considera¬tion when planning a shrinkage mining program. In it¬self, shrinkage mining is capable of producing ore in a relatively short time with little capital development. If quick production is required, this method can produce ore rapidly as all that is required is that the draw system be completed and the miners with jacklegs and stopers produce a limited amount of ore. The obvious disadvan¬tage is that not all the ore broken can be pulled from the stope immediately. However, a mining horizon with sev¬eral shrinkage stopes in different stages of production can adequately maintain scheduled tonnage require¬ments, the cycle being stopes under development, stopes actively mining, and stopes completed and pulling. When the decision has been made to use shrinkage mining in a given block, the haulage and draw system is driven. The proximity of the orepass system dictates whether the system is to be a LHD operation or a slusher trench operation. If the orepass system is in close prox¬imity to the stoping block, LHD equipment is employed because of its ability to operate efficiently over short haulage distances. A long tram to the orepass usually dictates a slusher trench operation with haulage by train. Internal orepass systems are used effectively with LHD equipment with a load-out and retramming taking place on a lower horizon. In addition, stoping blocks in older areas of the mine are developed track because of the capital cost involved in converting an existing level to trackless mining. DRIFT DEVELOPMENT USING LHD EQUIPMENT The haulage drift for a draw system using LHD equipment is driven parallel to the ore body in the foot¬wall at a sufficient distance to allow an 11.5-m (35-ft) drawpoint to be driven into the ore (Fig. 1). The actual position of the drift depends entirely upon the ore con¬figuration and the drift size depends on the equipment to be used. Drift sizes of 4.6 x 4.1 m (14 x 121/2 ft) for an St-4 and 3.8 x 3.6 m (111/2 x 11 ft) for an St-2 meet company and government clearance standards and allow sufficient space to accommodate a ventilation pipe. This work is concerned with the extraction of refractory metals using an electro-reduction process, in which a molten oxide melt, instead of halide, is used as the electrolyte. The process may provide an alternative method of producing refractory metals from their ores through use of a reverse-polarity direct current (DC) plasma arc heating process. In such a process, the plasma torch itself acts as an anode, and resulting liquid or solid product metals work as a cathode, whereas the molten oxide melt plays the role of an electron transfer layer. The focus of this study is: the electro-reduction of scheelite; vanadium pentoxide; and chromite. For the vanadium pentoxide, the proposed melt is mainly composed of CaO-V2O5/Li2O-B2O3-V2O5or FeO-CaO-SiO2-V2O5-Li2O with the addition of other alkali and alkaline metal oxides. In the case of scheelite ore, the SiO2-CaO-Li2O-WO3system is used as melt and metal aluminum or nickel could be used as a collecting media. As for the reduction of chromite ore, SiO2-CaO-Cr2O3-Li2O system with trace amount of CaF2is used as the melt. As a demonstration, chromium was successfully produced at a laboratory scale through the plasma driven electro-reduction process. One of the studied slags had a composition of 13.8% CaO; 4.9%CaF2; 36.4% Cr2O3; 6.9% Li2O; and 38.0% SiO2. Two observations are significant in this laboratory scale study. The first one was that the amount of Cr2O3and FeO, which were predominantly electronic conductors in the oxide melt, greatly affected the conducting mechanism of the melt. With high concentration of Cr2O3and FeO in the melt, the current efficiency was fairly low. In this case, chromium was found to be barely reduced because of electronic conducting mechanism. For example, with initial slag of 60% Cr2O3, no chromium was found reduced. With low concentration of Cr2O3and FeO in the studied melt, typically no more than 30% Cr2O3, it was observed that chromium was readily reduced due to the dominant ionic conducting mechanism. The second observation was that the addition of SiO2tothe melt helped to make the oxide melt more ionic, which was apparently desirable to the molten oxide electrolysis. However, high content of silica had a negative effect on the fluidity of the melt. This was resolved by adding trace amounts of CaF2to the melt. Therefore, by judicious selection of oxide melt, refractory metal oxides might be dissolved into it and yet the melt itself retains the required ionicity. A reverse-polarity DC plasma driven molten oxide electrolysis may prove to be a viable alternative route for the extractive metallurgy of refractory metals.

INTRODUCTION Nonfuel mineral markets have always tended to be volatile due to the cyclical nature of demand and the difficulty of fine-tuning capacity and output levels. Experiences over the past two decades, however, have been especially perverse. This short volume attempts to provide insights into this era and some guidance for the future. The papers are linked together by their focus on issues of productive capacity. At the same time, they provide a useful description, explanation and evaluation of the industry's evolution and its implications for the near-term. The regnant pessimism of the 1980s was very much alive during the early months of 1987 when the theme of this symposium was formalized. Indices of real metal prices had only inched-up from all-time lows in 1986. The hemorrhage of corporate red-ink was still a powerful memory. Frustration with the apparent inability of closures and reduced capacity utilization to re-establish market balance was strong. To the more pessimistic, the industry appeared destined to a quarter century of persistent excess capacity and nonremunerative prices. The conditions to support this pessimism were readily apparent. Economic literature tells us that surplus capacity is a complex, usually unexpected and often long-lived phenomenon caused by the interaction of at least three factors. The first is a rising capital-intensity of production. The second is the presence of aggressive new entrants whose capacity additions are typically (1) trade- dedicated because local market absorption is low; (2) cost-competitive for natural or policy-support reasons; (3) heavily burdened by debt-repayment obligations; and (4) viewed as important sources of employment, regional development and foreign exchange. The third, and often decisive, factor is an unanticipated decline or stagnation in demand growth for the sector's output. The first two factors combine to increase competitive pressures and to raise the actual or perceived cost of idle capacity. Market rigidity reduces responsiveness to price signals and distorts the burden of adjustment. Demand atrophy exacerbates these pressures especially on unprotected producers in the higher quadrants of the global supply function. In the mid-1980s, evidence of the existence of all these factors were easy to cite. Culprits were often identified. Claims for protection, global sharing of adjustment burdens, and imposition of disincentives to new capacity regardless of inherent economic status were co-dominant themes with the buzz-words of "competitiveness" and "level playing fields." This, notwithstanding the suggestions of the same economic literature that excess capacity persists longest when interventionist remedies permit it to continue. Today, only eighteen months later, the mood is decidedly more buoyant and most analysts are cautiously optimistic about the next few years. Many informed analysts have concluded that the excess capacity of the recent past has disappeared. For the present, the marketplace seems to have restored a balance between supply and demand. That the adjustment took five or six years longer than anticipated attests to the dramatic structural changes which have characterized the industry. The implications of these changes for the future are unclear. Were the macroeconomic shocks, coupled with industry transitions, so extraordinary in magnitude and timing that experiences were unique? If so, the next years may hold more stable and cautious times for the industry. Alternatively, is the inherently volatile metals industry facing a future of cycles equally perverse in terms of amplitude and duration due to economic uncertainities and inflexible industry response capabilities?

Productivity is the most important determinant in the economics of underground coal mining operations. Lower labor productivity increases labor requirements per ton. This, in turn, increases the unit cost of production. Intensive labor requirements may also affect miner injuries and fatalities by increasing man-hours of exposure necessary to produce a given amount of coal.

The objective of this chapter is to provide data that will assist in the selection and sizing of equipment utilized in the filtration method of separating solids from liquids. It should be recognized at the outset that in some situations more than one option may be available to achieve the target desired. Two rare evaporite minerals, nahcolite (NaHC03) and trona (Na2C03?NaHC03?2H20), are both widely used in the production of sodium carbonate (Na2CO3) The largest natural carbonate deposits (trona) are in Wyoming, USA, the second largest deposits are in Turkey, in a lacustrine basin (Beypazari) where nahcolite and trona are located within the Miocene Hirka Formation. The Hirka Formation is mainly composed of bituminous shale, claystone, marlstone, tuffltuffite, and dolomitic limestones. Although numerous trona beds are interbedded within the above mentioned sedimentary units, there are only two beds of trona that are of economic interest. The lower part of the lower trona bed is rich in double carbonates such as pirrsonite (NA2C03? CaC03?2H20) and gaylussite (Na2C03?CaC03?5H20), indicating a change in Ca/Na ratio in the solutions which are responsible for the formation of soda occurrences. In contrast, the upper part of the upper trona bed is rich in nahcolite. This minerological pattern has been found in every drill- hole in the basin. While both trona beds average up to 10 m (33 ft) thick, the average thickness of nahcolite is approximately 0.5 m (1.6 ft). Also, thin section studies show that many fibrous and lath-like trona crystals contain small radial nahcolite crystals; all of them are euhedral and equi-dimensional. Geochemical studies of major, minor, and trace element contents also support this coexistence. Macroscopic and microscopic observations reveal that the nahcolites principally were formed as a result of an incongruent dissolution process of trona. In conclusion, the presence of nahcolite in the Beypazari basin is due to the dissolution process of trona, particularly during the last stage of evaporation, as a result of fresh water entering the basin. During that time, an increase in the HC03/ C03 ratio resulted in nahcolite-trona phase transitions.

Restrictions on fugitive emissions and crushing operations continue to get tighter. Although fugitive dust control in the gold mining industry has historically been difficult, there are now several options that can make dust control both effective and efficient. Using new technology, mine operators can now design and maintain a dust control program that can reduce product losses, decrease equipment failure, cut cleaning costs, and meet air quality compliance standards as well as provide a better working environment. This paper discusses the sources of fugitive emissions related to the gold mining and crushing operations and describes effective new control methods.

In an increasingly environmentally conscious world, mining's importance to society has often been misunderstood and even maligned by the public. Extreme and impractical ideas have often been presented to children because of the lack of accurate, timely resource materials available to educators. In the late 1960s. two mining engineers, S.P. "Pi" Warren and C.L. "Lindy" Barker, became aware of this situation. They proposed to develop a summer field course to provide a factual overview of the minerals industry for teachers. The pair believed that teachers could become better informed to educate students, and future generations, about mining. These two Colorado Mining Association (CMA) members felt that such a course could reduce much of the misunderstanding about this vital industry. This could be done by providing a balanced perspective of mining, not only for kindergarten-through-grade-12 teachers, but also for the students they would be teaching during their careers. Students who better understood the minerals industry could better formulate an unbiased view of it. The course would seek recognized authorities from industry, academia and government who would lecture in their respective fields of expertise. The course would provide a total concept of the coal, aggregate, metals and industrial minerals industries. It would include geology, geophysics, exploration, mining, processing, marketing, product applications, economic, mining history, careers, and environmental responsiblity. When possible, site visits would permit educators to view operations and to meet the men and women who are industry leaders. Teachers would pay a small tuition fee. The balance of the program expenses for each teacher would be paid through scholarships provided by industry and individuals. The "total concept" idea obtained the support of the minerals industry. The support of CMA's Education Committee and the Colorado School of Mines (CSM) was obtained in 1968. Colorado's Commission on Higher Education approved teacher recertification credits through CSM's Office of Special Progams and Continuing Education for those successfully completing the program. The first six-week series of classes presenting the total concept of the indus¬try was held at CSM in 1969. In 1977, the CMA Education Foundation Inc. (CMAEF) was established as a Colorado nonprofit corporation. The "Total Concept of the Mining Industry" (Total Concept) course was placed under its sponsorship. CMAEF is dedicated toward this continuing education program (Table 1). In 1994, the course was streamlined to four-weeks for six hours recertification credit.

There has been an increasing trend in recent months by regulatory agencies to require that estimates be made of the hydraulic head acting, under operational conditions, on the surface of primary leach pad liners. This move towards inferred performance standards, rather than specifying a prescriptive standard for all sites regardless of economics, is to be generally welcomed. The theory of flow on a sloped beach pad, which was developed by East et al, 1987 (Reference 1 and 3) has been refined and extended. Unitized curves have been developed by graphically displaying the seepage losses and resulting dissolved gold lost as seepage through the primary liner as an aid to pad liner selection and design. Very little information is available of actual hydraulic head profiles acting on the liners beneath heap leached ores. Attempts have been made to measure these by drilling from the top of the heap and installing piezometers at the base. With this procedure it is difficult to obtain accurate data due to the fact that the drilling operation itself creates a highly permeable vertical flow path which may not exist to the same degree elsewhere in the heap. Combined with the fact that it is almost impossible to ensure that the piezometer tip is sitting directly above the liner without the risk of causing some damage to the liner itself. The best time to install hydraulic head monitoring devices on the pad liner is during construction and when piezometers can be carefully placed directly above the liner and suitably protected hydraulic lines laid to ensure full hydrostatic head measurement with simple manometer devices.

Rotary Percussion drilling has shown great improvement over rotary drilling, when hard roof is encountered. In addition, Rotary Percussion drills have eliminated the need for air drills in many applications. Improved drilling rates have been achieved but roof bolting is still a bottleneck in many operations and the demand for further improvement will continue. Drilling rates beyond current performance is limited by the capabilities of existing drill steels and bits to resist increased horsepower input. The most apparent immediate solution to improved drilling is to increase the strength and rigidity of the drill steels. Drilling experience indicates that a l-1/2" diameter or 1-5/8" diameter hole can be drilled as rapidly or 'more rapidly than the standard 1-3/8" diameter hole. Greater torque and thrust capacities can be achieved through the use of larger O. D. and I. D, steels, however, this is only possible if the larger hole sizes can be made allowable. Large diameter anchorage shells can be made available at a slight extra cost.

Increases in the price of gold starting about five years ago, and rapid fluctuations since then, have caused a substantial popular interest in the noble metal. Gold prospecting had been at low ebb since the end of World War II in most of the United states except for a flurry of activity in Nevada occasioned by the Carlin and Cortez discoveries. The last five years, however, have seen a great awakening of interest in gold exploration as well as an opportunity for education for many explorationists in the geology and other vagueries of gold deposits. The present writers have participated over the last few years in a search for gold deposits throughout the United States. This search was greatly influenced by the geologic studies of Dr. Wm. Spence at the Haile Gold Mine in South Carolina as reported in a companion paper. Spence's studies resulted in definition of a geologic model that has proven useful in a number of other geologic environments in the united states. These programs were all carried out under the auspices of Cyprus Mines Corporation and permission by Cyprus to present these results is gratefully acknowledged. The writers, however, reserve for themselves all responsibility for the results and conclusions. The exploration program to be described began in the southeastern United States. Spence's studies provided a reasonable basis for interpreting and understanding the geology of the Haile deposit and also provided a means for predicting additional occurrences. This concept was then expanded to other gold occurrences in the Piedmont and became an effective tool for evaluating other prospects. Finally it became evident that the concept could be applied in some western gold districts. The following discussion will then include descriptions of other Piedmont examples and a few western districts that also appear to fit the pattern.

A mathematical model based on the pertinent fluid dynamic equations to predict the performance of the hydro cyclone has been developed which will eventually replace the empirical model. Experimental measurements of fluid velocity profiles made in a 75 mm hydrocyclone by laser Doppler velocimetry (LDV) agree well their predictions by solving the Navier-Stokes equations numerically. Particle slip velocity and particle trajectory were computed which in turn, yields separation curve of the hydrocyclone.

The publication from which this paper was abstracted is the first at-tempt to correlate all the metallogenic deta compiled by the author for the preparation of the 1:2,000,000 Metallogenic Map of Central America. It is not a treaty of metallogenic theories but rather a careful effort to postulate metallogenic provinces and epochs with the intention to stimulate other geologists and mining companies familiar with the area to criticize and improve on the ideas proposed. The sole purpose being to find new mineral deposits for the betterment of our people.

The effectiveness of selective flocculation and dispersion processes for the concentration of hematite ore are strongly dependent on the ionic content of the process water. It has been noticed that magnesium ions are more detrimental to iron recoveries during gravity separation and flotation processes than calcium. This phenomenon was studied by measuring the zeta potential of hematite ore at various concentrations of sodium, magnesium, calcium, strontium and barium at a pH of 11. Results show that zeta potential inverts from negative to positive at concentrations as low as 0.16 mM of magnesium ions in the solution. It takes a significantly higher concentration (1.25 mM) of calcium ions to achieve the same effect. This difference is attributed to the ability of magnesium ions to adsorb to all surface hydroxyl groups, whereas calcium, due to its larger size, can only adsorb to every third hydroxyl group. This hypothesis was confirmed by results similar to those seen with calcium when this test was repeated with strontium and barium ions. The tendency for calcium ions to adsorb to every third surface hydroxyl group causes higher concentrations of calcium to be less detrimental to hematite concentration processes than magnesium.

Tertiary calc-alkalic to alkalic rocks of the Little Rocky Mountains in north-central Montana host low-grade heap-leachable gold-silver deposits being mined by Pegasus Gold Corporation. Total production from 1884 through 1985 is estimated at 22,625 kilograms (727,414 ounces) of gold. This includes 10,774 kilograms (346,400 ounces) recovered by Pegasus between 1980 to 1986 from 20,318,000 tonnes (22,396,000 tons) of ore grading 0.960 grams of gold per tonne (0.028 ounces per ton). Silver production during this latter period was 24,556 kilograms (789,500 ounces), but reliable silver statistics prior to 1980 are not available. Ore reserves as of January 1, 1986, were estimated to be 35,380,800 tonnes (39,000,000 tons) grading 0.720 grams per tonne (0.021 ounces per ton). Present ore production is 5,533,920 tonnes (6,100,000 tons) per year at a 0.45 to 1 waste to ore strip ratio. Current annual metal production is about 2,644 and 5,288 kilograms of gold and silver respectively (85,000 and 170,000 ounces of gold and silver respectively). The Little Rockies were formed by a calc-alkalic to alkalic magma penetrating through the Precambrian basement into the overlying Paleozoic and Mesozoic sedimentary rocks. This intrusive center is Dart of the Central Montana Alkalic Province, a region comprised of twelve separate intrusive centers aligned in a northeast trending belt measuring 200 by 400 kilometers (124 x 248 miles). The ore deposits are structurally controlled epithermal systems which vary from deeper narrow veins to shallow, wide, low-grade stockworks, breccias and intensely fractured "sheeted" zones. The shallow types are now being exploited. Primary mineralization consists principally of gold and silver associated with pyrite, native gold and silver, sylvanite, calaverite, and hessite. Alteration is broadly classified as weak argillic. Pyritization, kaolinization, silicification and feldspathization are the dominant forms of alteration. Fluorite is a common hydrothermal gangue mineral.

This paper describes recent ground control challenges encountered at the longwall recovery areas of one of Bailey Mine?s two longwall faces and the proactive measures taken by CONSOL management and engineering to mitigate them. The challenges derived primarily from the following causes: (1) irregular roof coal and draw slate thickness, (2) presence of thick sandstone at the recovery area and extremely weak rocks below the sandstone, (3) close proximity to a regional anticline, (4) low shield set pressure and tip load, and (5) ineffective primary roof support that led to progressive failure of the headgate roof. The presence of the anticline contributed to extensive fracturing of the sandstone. Excessive pot-out in advance of the shields frequently occurred near mid-face due to the presence of thick draw slate and irregular roof coal near the recovery area. This, in turn, resulted in face heights that exceeded the maximum reach of the shields. Subsequently, during longwall meshing, when the advance rate slowed considerably, fractured sandstone would often break loose, causing the shields to yield, thereby reducing the height and inhibiting shearer movement. To improve the headgate and face conditions within the longwall recovery area, several actions were taken, including: (1) assessing site-specific roof geology by conducting in-mine roof coring around the recovery areas and by mapping immediate draw slate and roof coal thicknesses within surrounding entries, (2) increasing pump pressure and thus shield set pressures (3) diligently monitoring shield set pressures and longwall extraction horizon, (4) installing additional cable bolts and roof screening to prevent progressive failure of the immediate headgate roof, (5) fully-grouting supplemental cable bolts to improve headgate support stiffness, and (6) gluing the headgate roof within the recovery areas with polyurethane. As a result of these collective efforts, longwall recovery delays at Bailey Mine were reduced from 21 days in 2006 to nearly zero in 2009.

The Ertsberg East discovery was announced by Freeport in 1979 with proven geological reserves of 45 Mt (49.6 million tons) with a grade of 2.65% copper and recoverable gold values. This recently discovered deposit is one of a cluster of skarn-type copper occurrences found within the limits of Freeport Indonesia's mining con- cession at an elevation of about 3600 m (12,000 ft) in the extremely rugged Jaya Wijaya Mountains of Irian Jaya, the Indonesian half of the island of New Guinea. The Ertsberg East lies about 1.5 km (0.9 miles) east of the Ertsberg ore body, which is also known by the Indonesian name "Gunung Bijih" or "ore mountain." For general background, the original Ertsberg ore body was first discovered by the Dutch geologist Jacques Dozy in 1938 while on a mountain climbing expedition. It was mapped and sampled by Forbes Wilson and Del Flint after a two-week harrowing trek into the mountains from the coastal swamps. A drilling program in 1967- 1968 established that the Ertsberg was a viable mining venture, containing approximately 33 Mt (36.4 million tons) of skarn-type copper ore. The deposit averaged 2.5% copper, with significant values in gold and silver. The first shipment of copper concentrates was made in December 1972, following a capital investment of $200 million. Following the routine production of ore from this deposit, it became necessary to consider additional sources of ore to extend the life of the mining operation. An exploration program was thus started with the initial objective of finding shallow or surface ores which could be blended with the material being mined at Ertsberg. Project geologist Frank Nelson was transferred from Freeport Exploration Co. to the Freeport Indonesia organization at the Ertsberg mine. However, the exploration work was the functional responsibility of Freeport Exploration. Del Flint had overall responsibility for the program from the Reno headquarters office and provided liaison with management in the USA and Indonesia.

The results of a study and effective use of flotation for processing of ores with complex mineral composition containing fine-disseminated minerals with high specific density are presented in the paper. The object of research was complex baddeleyite-containing ore from Kovdor deposit (The Kola peninsula, Russia). Baddeleyite is a valuable, rare mineral, natural Zirconium dioxide with 5.8 - 6.0g / cm density, grade content 0.15 - 0.17 and dissemination less than 0.2 mm. The authors carried out a thorough investigation of baddeleyite- containing products selected in different sites of gravity flowsheet. It was determined that due to similar specific weight some sulphide minerals (pyrite, pyrrhotite) come into concentrate together with baddeleyite and, also, minerals of pyrochlores group (hatchettolite). The results obtained revealed the possibility of use the flotation for retreating rough baddeleyite concentrate. he given gravity concentrate has a number of specific features, e. g. high density of its minerals which, in its turn, provides for high speed of sedimentation of solid phase in pulp, and for the presence of large amount of sulphide minerals (up to 10%) having good flotability. With these features being taken into account a technology for flotation of baddeleyite-containing products after their preliminary gravity concentration has been developed (up to 5 - 10% Zirconium dioxide). The technology has three flotation stages. At the first one the reverse flotation of baddeleyite is carried out during which "light" minerals (forsterite. apatite and carbonites) come into froth product and at the second one flotation of sulphide minerals and at the third one direct flotation of baddeleyite is performed from the underflow product. The following reagents were used for flotation: of phosphate type (sodium tripolyphosphate, mono and diethers of alkylphosphpric acid) and sodium xanthate as collector for sulphides. The given set reagents provides for high effectiveness of flotation due to selective of collectors and presence of froth layer with high carrying ability. New flotation technology of recovering of baddeleyite from complex ore was developed and applied at the Kovdor Mining Plant, using AKER flotation machines.
