Introduction Since the beginning of operations at the pellet plant at Ponta Ubu ES, Samarco Mineração SA has produced pellets for direct reduction and blast furnace processes. Of the total amount of pellets produced from 1977 through 1993, 55 % are used in the blast furnace, about 45 Mt (49.6 million st). The principal components of pellet gangue are calcium oxide, magnesium oxide, silica and alumina. They should be added in adequate quantities to guarantee the mechanical resistance of the fired pellets under blast furnace conditions. Over the years, the pellets produced by Samarco had a silica content between 2.5% and 2.8% and varying binary basicity preferably between 0.8 and 0.85. On the other hand, the increasing amount of industrial waste in siderurgical plants caused by the increase of steel production has caused some countries to put into practice methods to reduce the volume of slag produced in the blast furnace. This paper's goal is to find an alternative for decreasing the amount of slag produced in the blast furnace. It is possible to decrease pellet gangue by decreasing the silica content to about 2%, leaving the metallurgical properties and quality of pellets unaltered. For this work, Samarco pellets were used with Si02 between 2.5% and 2.8%, pellets with high silica and pellets with Si02 between 2.0% and 2.3% low silica. Both were partially fluxed by the range of varying basicity CaO/SiO2 from 0.8 to 0.95 during production. Experimental tests on pilot scale Thhis work began in January 1986 in the pilot plant (pot grate, Fig. 1) at Samarco. Its goal was to obtain preliminary data that would indicate the bybility of the project. It also formed a solid base to extend the studies in tests on an industrial scale of production for blast-furnace pellets. The pot grate is a test furnace composed of a gas burner, a combustion chamber and a grate, connected by hot air ducts. The burner is fed by a mixture of LPG and air. It reaches high temperatures through oxygen injection. The combustion chamber heats the air that comes from the turbocompressor. This hot air flows through the ducts to the grate on which the pellet samples are fired. During updraft drying, downdraft drying, preheating, firing and afterfiring, the upward and downward direction of the air flow can be controlled by valves driven by pneumatic cylinders. The pot grate indurator was fully automated in August 1989. Positive and negative pressures measurements resulting from gas passing through the pellet layer, as well as temperature readings, are recorded in graphs in relation to time for all tests. The tests depend on the various steps carried out in sequence that can influence the results of the tests. Therefore, some criteria were adopted to restrict the number of variables in the process. This was done to facilitate the results of the analysis. The pellets were composed of concentrate, bentonite, hydrated calcitic lime and metallurgical coal, all regularly used in the pellet plant. The material balance of the pellets mix was determined from the chemical analysis of the components. Table 1 shows the chemical characteristics of the concentrate and the additives used in the pilot plant and industrial tests. The basicity has a marked influence on the metallurgical properties of the pellets produced by Samarco with a silica content between 2.5% and 2.8%. However, for pellets with low silica (about 2%), it was necessary to study the variation in the parameters of quality in a wide range of basicities to deliniate with precision a scope of work. A large variety of low-silica blast-furnace pellets were produced at the pilot plant with binary basicity varying between 0.8 and 0.95. After chemical analysis, those pellets were separated into five groups of different binary basicity (0.8, 0.84, 0.87, 0.90 and 0.95). Each was then split, one part for metallurgical tests in the laboratory at Samarco and another to be evaluated in a laboratory for metallurgical tests in Germany. Until well into the 20th century, most construction work was performed under the auspices of a master builder or in a manner that would be described today as design-build. In addition, many civil engineers served as ?interns? under the tutelage of a master builder in order to learn how to design and construct a certain type of structure. This was certainly the case for tunneling projects with various individuals having been identified as tunneling experts as a result of successfully completed projects The master builder approach began to change in the early 1900s to a model that would be referred to today as design-bid-build. A design-bid-build approach to project procurement gives the owner more control over the final product and al-lows the contractor to know exactly what is expected of them before the work is constructed. As a result of this transition in project procurement, civil engineering schools placed a greater emphasis on the training of ?design? professionals. This article will document how the training of tunnel design professionals progressed within the United States. Although it is difficult to generalize about the hundreds of tunnels that were constructed in the first four decades of the 20th century, there is one project that stands out as having resulted in a university program related directly to tunneling and that is the Chicago Subway. During a visit to the United States in 1938, Dr. Karl Terzaghi met a student named Ralph Peck who was then studying at Harvard University in a pro-gram established by Arthur Casagrande. Shortly thereafter, Terzaghi traveled to Chicago for a lecture and was asked to consult on the Chicago subway project that was then under construction. The Chicago subway was being constructed in clay, and the owners were worried about possible settlements to nearby buildings. Terzaghi asked Peck to serve as his field engineer for that project. Thus was established one of the most productive relationships in the history of civil engineering in the United States. Peck, who would become Dr. Peck, moved to Chicago in 1939 to participate in an extensive research project that con-tinued until subway construction was halted in 1941 because of World War II. During that time, the cost of subway construction in Chicago was reduced substantially as a result of Peck?s observations and Terzaghi?s recommendations. In fact, it was reported that subway construction in Chicago cost less than one-half of similar projects in London even though the clay in London is considerably stiffer compared to Chicago. Upon the completion of his work on the Chicago Subway, Peck accepted a professorship with the University of Illinois in Champaign/Urbana.

Two porphyry copper orebodies, the North and Central MM orebodies, have been found through regional and structural geologic works, about 5 Km south of Chuquicamata, under a gravel bed of approximately 100 m and in the west side of the West Fissure. The mineralization is emplaced in a coarse granodioritic porphyry, predominantly with sericitic alteration. In the North MM ore-body, with 200 million metric tons of 1.0% Cu, the mineralization is mainly chalcopyrite, bornite, digenite and molibdenite. In the central MM orebody, with 700 million metric tons of 1.3% Cu, there are large veins of enargite, chalcocite and bornite, the last one increasing in depth, separated by chalcopyrite and pyrite zones; in these veins there are interesting gold and silver values. Both orebodies have an upper enrichment of chalcocite and covellite, with pyrite envelope. According with these characteristics, the MM orebodies could he the upper part, with sericitic alteration, of the Chuquicamata porphyry copper system, displaced by the West Fissure system movements, but we couldn't eliminate the possibility that MM can be a new orebody, different of Chuquicamata.

Nearly 30 estimates of the minimum earth stress were obtained from hydraulic stimulation tests in 5 boreholes at depths varying from 0.6 to 4.3 km in jointed granitic rock near the Valles Caldera in New Mexico. This site is located within the transition between the Colorado Plateau and Basin and Range provinces. Stresses were determined from open hole hydraulic fracturing experiments conducted with water at pressures up to 48.3 MPa (surface). The virgin bottomhol e temperatures ranged up to 327°C. Pressure records show no evidence of rock breakdown, indicating injection into pre-existing joints. A typical pressure response consists of an early wellbore storage period followed by linear fracture flow, which then evolves into a steady pressure, fracture extension mode. Shut-in behavior is characterized by a sharp pressure drop followed by a more gradual decay. The minimum earth stress shows a general linear trend with depth, increasing with a gradient of 19 MPa/km. A low stress anomaly occurs from 2490 to 3100 m where the minimum stresses are as much as 28 MPa lower.

During the last 15 years, the North American Mining Industry has experienced increasing usage of cast high chromium white iron grinding media in wet grinding applications. First introduced into the cement industry (klinker grinding) where wear rate reductions of four or five times have been realized compared to steel balls, this same grinding media serve the iron, copper, and phosphate markets by resisting not only impacts and abrasion, but also corrosion which occurs in wet grinding. In these markets, single mills containing 250,000 kg of grinding balls are not un-common and hence the economic potential with respect to lower wear rates can be significant. Add to reduced wear rate the increased production efficiency that is possible and it is readily understood why much of the mining industry uses cast high chromium grinding media. Metallurgically, the alloys used consist of a martensitic matrix containing hard M7C3 eutectic carbides. Carbon (2.0 to 3.5%) and chromium (12 to 277.) are characteristically used to arrive at the desired properties.

Regional Tertiary formations and basins of local sedimentation which contain uranium deposits west of the Rocky Mountains are mainly of Oligocene, Miocene, and Pliocene age (fig. 1). The host rocks have been derived mainly from intrusive and extrusive igneous rock. The major host formations which cover broad geographic areas include the Esmeralda, Truckee, Humboldt, Thousand Creeks, Payette, Panaca, Cedarville, Coso, and San Joaquin Formations. Local areas of Tertiary sedimentation containing uranium deposits occur near Yuma, Safford and Artillery Peak, Arizona; Dillon and Canyon Ferry, Montana; Spokane Indian Reservation and Pend Orielle River, Washington; Topaz Mountain, Utah; Stanley Basin, Idaho; and Sonora Pass, California. Uranium deposits in these sediments have been classified into five categories based on environment (fig. 2). They are: (1) Deposits in lake sediments consisting mainly of water-laid tuffs; (2) Deposits in lake sediments intruded by volcanic plugs; (3) Deposits in lake sediments interbedded with arkoses near batholiths; (4) Deposits in coarse volcanic sediments in local sedimentary basins; (5) Deposits in arkosic conglomerates in local sedimentary basins.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines is conducting core leaching experiments with sulfuric acid on oxide copper ores from the Cyprus Casa Grande and ASARCO Santa Cruz deposits in Arizona to further our understanding of the leaching process in supergene copper ores as it relates to in situ mining. Leach solutions from atacamite mineralization contained 5 to 30 g/l copper and few extraneous ions. Leachant from chrysocolla ores, with grades similar to the atacamite, contained 2 to 9 g/l copper and abundant extraneous ions. Quartz and K-feldspar had no impact on leach solution composition at any acid concentration (up to 40 g/l) while illite and sericite had minimal impact. Biotite, calcium-rich clay and limonite have a significant impact on solution chemistry when there is abundant free acid in solution. High acid concentrations increase acid consumption in ores with abundant biotite and limonite gangue. High acid concentrations can be used in ores with quartz, K-feldspar, and sericite gangues without increasing acid consumption per unit of copper removed.

The Bureau of Mines, as part of a program to improve mine planning and development, is currently investigating the effects of pillar load transfer, which can impact mining operations within a multiple-seam configuration. A comparative study was performed at two separate mine sites to determine the effects of this load transfer mechanism. The Bureau installed and monitored instrumentation at both sites to gather pertinent data on rock mechanics. At mine site A overburden depth varied dramatically in the vicinity of the study area and reached a topographic high at the study site: inner burden thickness was less than a pillar width (40 to 45 ft) (12 to 14 m): floor heaving was experienced in both coalbeds where sandstone and/or shale floor units were observed: overlays of the mine layouts show pillars were not totally super-positioned: a maximum of 5 in (13 cm) of roof to floor convergence was measured and pressure readings indicated pillar core loading only and increased to a maximum of 7,000 psig (48,300 kPa) over instrument setting pressure.

The Velvet mine is located in the Big Indian district of the Colorado Plateau. The general area, also known as the Lisbon Valley district, is about 65 kilometers southeast of Moab, Utah and about 120 Kilometers southwest of Grand Junction, Colorado. As shown by the slide, the Velvet area is typical of the high desert of the southwest United States. The elevation at the decline collar is 1,967 meters above sea level. To date, the Velvet has produced 1.5 million kilograms of U308 and 2.1 million kilograms of V205. The current production averages over 4,000 metric tons of ore per month. Access to the Velvet mine is by a 1,160 meter long decline. Fresh air is supplied through the decline and a 152 centimeter cased borehole. Contaminated air is removed by two 152 centimeter cased boreholes. The east side of the mine is mined using a conventional room and pillar method; whereas the west side is mined as combination conventional and random room and pillar,

Laboratory tests showed that ozone can destroy free cyanide and weakly complexed cyanide (copper and zinc cyanides). The iron cyanide complexes were resilient to ozonation but they were effectively eliminated by precipitation with Fe (II) ions under controlled pH conditions. Tests carried out with effluents from a number of gold mills confirmed the results obtained previously in the laboratory. The industrial samples contained cyanide in the form of free cyanide and also complex copper, zinc and iron cyanides. Solutions that contained up to 184 mg/L total cyanide, after the ozone treatment analyzed only 2-3 mg/L dissociable cyanide and 50-90 mg/L CN(t) (accounted for by iron complexes). After precipitation with ferrous ions total cyanide was reduced below 1.5 mg/L. For most solutions ozone consumption ranges from 3 to 6 g per g of cyanide destroyed. However, certain impurities (such as SCN and S203 ), present in some effluents, increase ozone consumption and make it more difficult to reduce copper concentration to satisfactory levels.

Mineral exploration consists of the acquisition of data and their interpretation to ascertain the presence or absence of uncertain events. In general, the amount of uncertainty decreases during exploration when targets become increasingly well defined. Decisions on further exploration and whether or not mining should be commenced are based on new information using both objective facts and subjective reasoning. Computers play an important role during all stages of exploration. Three recent books (References 1-3) on decision-making in exploration and mineral-resources evaluation provide additional background supplementing the papers in this volume and articles in scientific journals or other conference proceedings (e.g., References 4 and 5) dealing with the subject. Other new developments to be considered are that microcomputers are becoming increasingly important in the earth sciences (Reference 6), and so are applications of artificial intelligence (Reference 7). Microcomputer- based technology allows rapid communication between field parties and main office. Expert systems are becoming increasingly sophisticated aids for mineral exploration an can now contain objective rules based on statistical theory (Reference 8).

The first cement plant of TITAN Cement Co was founded in Elefsis in 1902. It was the first cement industrial facility to operate in the Balkans and in the Eastern Mediterranean region. Currently have four cement plants in Greece producing 5.4 million tons per annum, and 25 ready-mixed concrete sites producing 1.4 million m3 annually. It has a total of 20 quarries, 14 of which are producing materials used in the making of cement while the remaining six produce aggregates used in the production of ready-mixed concrete. All plants in Greece are accredited for ISO 14001. The restoration of quarries began in 1976 at the company?s limestone quarry of the Patras plant, and was soon extended to all quarries. At that time, a department responsible for all environmental issues was established. To date, over 700.000 shrubs and trees have been planted and maintained at quarries, plants and ready-mixed concrete facilities, while over 100,000 trees have been donated to municipalities, communities, customers and to the Greek state.

The Manapouri Power Station, commisioned in 1969, is located in Fiordland National Park in the South Island of New Zealand. It is the country’s largest hydro power scheme and can generate 700MW of electricity. The power station utilizes the hydraulic head of Lake Manapouri, using an underground power station and a 10 km-long tailrace tunnel was constructed by drill-and-blast to allow discharge to Doubtful Sound. Power generation fell short of expectations due to higher than expected friction in the tailrace system. To remedy this a second tailrace tunnel was constructed between June 1998and May 2002. It consisted of a 10 m diameter, 10 km long tunnel in predominately gneissic rock and was excavated using an Atlas Copco Robbins TBM. High water inflows, Owner/Contractor production incentives and a major claim settlement were handled during the 5 1/4 year project. This paper discusses TBM advance rates, utilization factors that increased in the second half of the project plus an innovative method for sealing Tunnel 1 to construct the bifurcation.

An alternative flowsheet was designed for the flotation treatment of a complex sulfide ore from the Sotiel Mine in Spain. The ore contains 0.71% Cu, 2.24% Pb and 5.63% Zn. Two specially developed synthetic collectors, methyl-mercapto-benzoxazole (MMBO) and 6n-propoxy-mercapto-benzo-thiazole (PMBT), were examined. MMBO exerts a specific action on copper and zinc minerals after treatment with copper sulfate, and PMBT exerts a specific action on Pb minerals. Flotation operating variables (pH, frother type, frother quantity and feed particle size) were examined by means of rougher flotation tests to determine the optimum conditions for the new collectors. Once the optimum conditions were determined, a series of open flotation circuits were run on feeds of various particle sizes (obtained by different types of grinding). The objective was to obtain high-grade Cu and Zn concentrates. The results of the open-circuit tests demonstrated that a Cu concentrate grading from 18% to 23% Cu and a Zn concentrate grading from 40% to 48% Zn can be produced.

The Mesquite mine is being operated by Gold Fields Operating Co.-Mesquite, a subsidiary of Gold Fields Mining Corp. The mine Is located in southeastern California about 56 km (35 miles) east of the farming community of Brawley, California. The mine has been in commercial production since early 1986 and Is a conventional open pit mine developed on 6.1 m (20 foot) benches. The gold is recovered by heap leach using permanent heaps built in multiple 6.1 m (20 foot) lifts. This year's gold production will be in the range of 5,600 kg (180,000 troy ounces). Current ore production is about 18,140 tonnes (20,000 tons) per day while the total tons mined Is averaging 65,000 tonnes (72,000 tons) per day. The climate at the mine is extremely arid with rainfall of 7.6 cm (3 inches) per year. From early May until late October daytime temperatures generally exceed 37.8 degrees Celsius (100 degrees Fahrenheit) and can be as high as 37.9 degrees Celsius (120 degrees Fahrenheit).

Geosynthetic clay liners (GCLs) are manufactured barrier layers containing a high-quality sodium bentonite clay attached or adhered to geotextiles or a geomembrane. The GCL's low permeability and high strength make it an ideal replacement for low permeability soil or clay liners for mineral extraction and processing containment applications. This paper will discuss the advantages of utilizing a GCL versus compacted clay in containment applications. Some of the advantages include: the GCL's lower permeability (5 x 10-9 centimeters per second (cm/sec)) and corresponding better composite liner leakage protection, the GCL' s greater resistance to desiccation, differential subsidence and freeze­thaw, and lastly, the ease and speed of installing the GCL. This paper will also detail a number of important case studies related to the mineral extraction and processing industry. These case studies include using GCL in two large reclamation capping projects, as a secondary liner in two gold heap leach pads, as a composite liner in a dam for stormwater runoff control, and lastly, as a primary liner for a tailings runoff diversion channel.

The role of bacterial oxidation in the mining industry is becoming more widely accepted. Western Australia has accepted the technology as a pretreatment for refractory gold concentrates more readily than most. The third of such plants has been completed at the Y ouanmi Gold Mine. This is situated approxi­mately 500 kilometres north east of Perth, in the Yilgarn mineral field. Y ouanmi concentrates are produced from underground ore and contain arsenopyrite and pyrite as the main sulphide miner­als. Refractory gold from this deposit is generally associated with the arsenopyrite portion of the material. Gold Mines of Australia Ltd ("GMA") initiated pilot scale testing at the BacTech premises in November 1993. The decision by GMA to use BacTech's technology was announced in February 1994. Design and construction commenced at this time. Bacterial growth on site was initiated in July 1994 and continuous opera­tion began in the October. Concentrate was added at 0.5 tonnes per hour and this has increased to 1 tonne per hour.

World demand of sulphur-in-all-forms (SAF), which in 1985 is estimated to total 57.5 million tonnes S equivalent, is expected to increase to 77.6 million tonnes S by the year 2000. Key factors are the evolution of sulphur demand in the USSR, China, and the developing countries notably India, Brazil, and the countries in North Africa and the Near East with vertically integrated phosphate industries. Brimstone will remain the dominant sulphurous raw material notwithstanding the progressive increase in the supply and use of sulphur in other forms resulting mainly from the enhanced recovery df pollution sulphur and the increased use of sulphur in pyrites in those countries with this sulphur resource. Sulphur demand for phosphate fertilizer manufacture is expected to have the main impact on world sulphur demand, but in contrast to the industrially advanced countries where non- fertilizer sulphur use is not expected to increase measurably, this demand sector is expected to be of some importance in those developing countries with dynamic economies and in the centrally planned economies of East Europe and the Far East.

In the early 1900s, vat leaching was a common process for treating gold ores. It was, however, labor intensive and was abandoned in the 1930s. Technology advances in recent years, though, have caused vat leaching to once again become a viable alternative in precious metal processing. At least three plants have been built. Others are being considered as alternatives to agitation and heap leaching. What is vat leaching? Vat leaching is a process in which ore is crushed and screened to a size of between 6 to 12 mm ( 0.25 to 0.5 in.) This crushed ore is placed in a large, boxlike container where an alkaline-cyanide solution is added and later removed. The process might be likened to indoor, controlled heap leaching. The ore does not require fine grinding in a ball mill. Therefore, capital and operating costs are lower than agitation treatment. But the extra handling causes costs to be slightly higher than heap leaching. If any amount of fines is present, the ore should be agglomerated.

In the Gold-Cyanide Process (GCP) the cyanide anions act to solubilize the gold and silver present in the ore, and mercury as well. The resulting mercury and cyanide rich effluent are serious health and environmental problems. Currently, there is no mercury treatment from the ore leach solution since there are no precipitating agents or other technologies which can be used effectively in the pH ~ 10solutions. Recently, however, we have developed a new chelate ligand that is impervious to this level of pH and it can be used to precipitate Hg from NaCN solutions. On an actual sample taken from an active gold mine the chelate selectively reduced the mercury level from 34.5 ppm to 0.008 ppm within 15 minutes. Importantly, the gold and silver levels remained unchanged throughout this process. Thus, the environmental impact of Hg released in the GCP can be drastically reduced. Moreover, with a mercury treatment technology now available it may be possible to change, or reinvent, the entire GCP process.
