A new process for the leaching of chalcopyrite concentrates has been developed and tested in miniplant campaigns and locked cycle testwork carried out between 1996 and 1999. The process involves pressure leaching in a sulphuric acid solution, e.g. raffinate from copper solvent extraction. Iron in the feeds is precipitated predominantly as hematite in the autoclave, simultaneously with copper extraction. Gold and silver in the pressure leach residue are recoverable by conventional cyanidation, following flotation to remove elemental sulphur by-product. The results of recent miniplant tests and batch locked cycle tests are provided.

This paper discusses and describes aspects of a cost effective and safe tailings impoundment selection. In light of the current low metal prices and recent tailings embankment failures around the world, it is becoming extremely more important to develop tailings impoundment design that balance cost efficiency with safety. The paper will present critical design components associated with a tailings impoundment which need to be addressed during the planning phase. Procedures for identifying various tailings impoundment alternatives, and evaluation and selection of alternatives are presented.

In the current study, bio-oxidation tests were carried out in shaking flasks with a flotation concentrate containing the sulphides pyrite, arsenopyrite and gudmidite. The tests were performed with mesophilic microorganisms (At. ferrooxidans) at 30 °C and also with the moderate thermophile S. thermosulfidooxidans, at 50 °C. The effects of (i) previous adaptation of the microorganisms to the concentrate, (ii) ferrous iron concentration and (iii) pulp density (2%, 4% and 6% (w/v)) on the dissolution of the sulphide were studied through arsenic extractions. S. thermosulfidooxidans was more sensitive to the pulp density in comparison to At. ferrooxidans as a reduction in sulphide oxidation was observed with the increase in the solid content to 6%. Therefore, the mesophilic strain was selected for further work, which comprised a rolling bottle experiment at 10% solids. After 40 days of bio-oxidation, the solid material was subjected to cyanidation, which revealed 85% gold extraction as compared to 21% from the original concentrate. The antimony sulphide grains in the bio-oxidized product showed similarity to what was observed in the original sample, suggesting such particles were not susceptible to the bio-oxidation process.

"The viscous flow phenomenon in slag close to the liquidus temperature was considered. A simple approach that liquidus temperatures of melt could be derived from viscosity data was employed. The potential of this method for estimating the liquidus temperatures of pure water and binary alloy was demonstrated. The liquidus temperatures of the CaO-Alz03 based slags obtained from the second derivative method depends upon the number of viscosity values available at different temperature intervals. The results indicated that plots start deviating from the straight-line behavior at temperature as expect, and the second derivatives show the break points at a certain temperature, which is the liquidus temperature. Comparisons among the present observations as well as the characteristic temperature of the selected slags, which measured by the hemisphere method and DSC, indicated that it is possible to get a reasonable idea of estimate the liquidus temperatures from activation energies for viscous flow.IntroductionThe liquidus temperature of slag, which has a significant effect on the kinetics of chemical reactions and the slag-metal separation, is extremely important for metallurgical operations. Experimental measurements of the liquidus temperatures of slags are difficult, since slags invariable supercool. In addition, behavior of a single constituent in a multi-component slag is different in different circumstances due to its interaction with other constituents. Hence, it is essential to study the liquidus temperature of each particular slag resulting from a special process. Usually, the compositions of the slags aimed to the single liquid region of the phase diagram. However, the phase diagram of many slag systems, which back often to the 1950's, involves considerable uncertainties. Many liquidus temperatures are given as dotted lines in Slag Atlas [1]. Disagreements between the phase diagram and the reality have been found [2]."

Negative electrodes for alkaline nickel-metal hydride batteries composed of MmNi3.5Al0.8Co0.7, where Mm is misch metal, have been characterized electrochermically and using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The stability and rapid hydriding and dehydriding kinetics of the alloy in KOH are attibuted to a surface film. The protective surface film is shown to consist of an porous, outer hydrated layer and a dense, inner oxide layer. In addition, metallic nickel and cobalt are found throughout the film, and are presumed to form a conductive, percolative network that permits rapid electron transfer from the bulk to the solution, allowing rapid electrochemical formation of atomic hydrogen.

Lance injection of gas and particles into a molten bath is currently practised in metallurgical processes (Mitsubishi lances for example). Several experimental and theorical studies have been conducted in the past on this topic. However, neither detailed calculations nor experimental studies of local flow patterns have been published. In the present work, a numerical simulation of the interaction of a gaseous vertical descending jet and a liquid surface was done, using the turbulence k-e model. There is a fair agreement between the calculated and the experimental values. The results of this study demonstrate that it is crucial that the gas jet velocity profile and turbulent characteristic are correctly formulated in order to correctly simulate the system.

There has been a dramatic development in the field of magnetic materials in the last 10 to 15 years. Capacity improvement of electronic components especially required an increased production of "rare earth magnets", e.g. samarium-cobalt (SmCo) magnets and neodymium-iron-boron (Nd-Fe-B) magnets. We participated in this development and learned how to construct systems for the dry processing of these magnet materials. In the meantime we have supplied a large number of these systems for coarse and fine milling. Processing is effected in a protective atmosphere in order to avoid oxidation and thus deterioration of the magnet materials.

The Noranda Continuous Converting Process was commissioned in November 1997 at the Home smelter in Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec, Canada. It has completed over 18 months of successful operation. Excellent team work and technical expertise contributed to achieve targeted production levels and environmental goals after only a few months of operation. The operating results have demonstrated the flexibility of the process in producing blister copper from a variety of copper feed materials including a combination of molten and solid copper matte, reverts and fluxes. This paper describes the startup activities and process optimization tasks performed during the first year of operation of the new Noranda Converter.

"This paper presents an analysis technique for the solidification of metal castings. This method, based on a modified finite difference scheme with an irregular mesh, is capable of dealing with the complex geometries of castings. The nonlinearities in material properties of specific heat and thermal conductivity, arising from the phase change during solidification, are accounted for in the step-by-step calculations. Two solidification problems are solved with this analysis technique and the calculated results compare satisfactorily with experimental data. IntroductionCasting process design engineers are often faced with the difficult problem of designing castings to be produced porosity-free. Since the solidification of metal is affected by many interacting variables such as the thermal conductivity, density, and specific heat of both the molten metal and the mold, it is easily seen why this is a difficult task.Typically, casting tooling design is an intuitive process which builds on past successful methods. After processing equipment is constructed, trial castings are made and examined for dimensions and integrity. Changes in the tooling are generally required to improve casting soundness or to reduce cycle time. In the permanent mold process, tooling is complex and difficult to alter after initial construction. The water-cooled steel molds are part of the complete automated system. Associated holding furnaces, pouring ladles, casting conveyers, and utility connections all make other than minor adjustments a costly and time consuming task. An analytical method for using the principles of heat transfer for predicting solidification patterns would be of great value in the permanent mold process by minimizing costly changes."

"The induction plasma jets employed for the in-flight nitridation of molybdenum disilicide (MoSi2) powders were investigated in terms of their flow characteristics. The present study shows the effect of the operating parameters of the plasma torch, as used for this process, on the plasma jet properties. The enthalpy probe techniques, along with mass spectrometry, were employed for the measurement of the jet temperature, velocity and concentration fields. The measured values were compared to the results of a numerical simulation performed on the plasma flowing inside the torch-reactor system. The process operating conditions studied were the plasma plate power, chamber pressure and sheath gas composition. The optimal conditions for effecting the nitridation process using thermal plasma are obtained at moderate plasma plate power, at around atmospheric pressure and by using a mixture of argon and nitrogen as the plasma torch sheath gas.IntroductionMolybdenum disilicide (MoSi2) based composites are considered to be one of the most promising candidates for high temperature structural material applications [!], especially because of their high melting points, good oxidation resistance and relatively low cost. However, the wide application of these composite materials is still limited by some factors such as their brittleness at room temperature and lower strength at high temperature (> 1500 K). To overcome such limitations, a number of researchers [2-4] have earlier studied various kinds of reinforcements for MoSi2, e.g. oxides, silicides and nitrides. More recently, Fan and coworkers [5-9] have demonstrated the possibility of in-flight nitridation and carburization of MoSi2, using a thermal plasma process. This work has confirmed the plasma synthesis route as one of the most promising methods for creating an in-situ second phase structure. Properties of the plasma flow, such as its temperature, flow velocity and composition, are of crucial importance for the nitridation of MoSi2 powders during their flight in the plasma. Therefore, the optimization of such a process involving plasma· generated reactive species necessitates a thorough understanding of the plasma flow characteristics."

The behaviour of S, N and P during refining of Fe-18 wt%Cr-10 wt%Ni with calcium carbide was investigated. The effects of the initial contents of C and N in the metal phase, as well as the supply method of calcium carbide to the melt on the removal degrees of S and P were evaluated. Heats were carried out at 1873K, in MgO crucibles, using a laboratory induction furnace. It was observed that simultaneously with S and P, N and O have also participated in the reactions. It seems that, in fact, O governs the behaviour of the other elements dissolved in the melt and that N is had to the removal of P with calcium carbide. It was also noticed that high C content in the metal phase have not altered the dephosphorization and desuffirization degrees, but that the supply of calcium carbide done by injection led to a lower dephosphorization degree than the one obtained by dumping it.

The optimization of the plutonium electrorefining process has been studied on the basis of modeling and model materials. The plutonium electrorefining process has been reviewed and the basics of the electrorefining process with molten salts as electrolytes and under forced convection has been presented. The definition of the problem in plutonium electrorefining has been related to three factors and this research has addressed these three factors to provide an insight to this process. The hydrodynamic factor gives information on the behavior of the mechanically stirred system. The chemical stability and solidification factor shows the interactions among the components of the electrorefining cell. The electrochemical factor is oriented to study the efficiency of the electrorefining process on the basis of limiting current density, stirring rate and configuration cell. As a result of this study the optimization of plutonium electrorefining implies mainly a re-design of the cell.

"A mathematical model that calculates the stress development in a coherent and stationary dendritic network due to interdendritic flow is proposed. The fluid flow is assumed to be related to the solidification shrinkage, and under the assumption of no porosity formation and unidirectional solidification, the shrinkage-induced flow within the mushy zone is calculated analytically. The interdendritic melt flow exerts a force on the solid network and an analytical expression for the stress build-up in the network is developed. Parameter studies illustrating the influence of cooling conditions, mushy zone length, dendrite coherency, fraction solid, volume fraction of eutectic, and solidification shrinkage upon the stress development within the solid network are presented. Comparing the magnitude of the calculated stresses to measurements of the strength in equiaxed mushy zones shows that it is possible for the stresses to exceed the strength, thereby resulting in reorientation or collapse of the dendritic network.IntroductionInterdendritic fluid flow is at present regarded as a very important mechanism for feeding of shrinkage during solidification of metal alloys. Solidification of many alloys is often characterised by heterogeneous nucleation of the primary phase on substrates in the melt with subsequent evolution of equiaxed dendrites. These equiaxed dendrites can initially grow freely, but impinge on each other and form a continuous dendritic network, ie. dendrite coherency, quite early in the solidification process. Measurements of the dendrite coherency point have shown that the dendritic network is established at solid fractions ranging between 0.1 and 0.5, and most often around about 0.2 [l]. Depending on the alloy composition this means that as much as 70 to 80% of the volumetric shrinkage has to be compensated by flow of liquid through the interdendritic network. Interdendritic flow occurs with a much larger resistance compared to free flow of the liquid and flow of a liquid with dispersed crystals. The pressure drop associated with the interdendritic flow increases rapidly with decreasing fraction ofliquid."

In fire refining of copper, the affinities of various impurity elements on dissolved oxygen is of great significance. Further, in the design of oxygen probes in liquid copper, the influence of solute interactions on the activity of oxygen need to be considered in order to evaluate the oxygen concentration in molten copper. The present paper presents a series of measurements of the activities of oxygen in liquid Cu-M-o alloys (where M stands for Mn, Zn, As, Se or Te) carried out by the present group employing the solid electrolyte galvanic cell technique. Extreme care was taken to control the oxygen potentials in the inert gas atmosphere, and to keep the oxygen levels very low in the molten metal. The oxygen content was determined by analysis of the samples taken out from the melt. The results obtained showed that Mn has a strong negative influence on the activity coefficient of oxygen in liquid copper. A similar, but less prominent effect was observed in the case of Zn. Arsenic had no influence on the activity of oxygen in Cu (liq.). Se and Te had slight negative effect on oxygen activities in copper at XO > 10-5, while at lower oxygen levels the interaction coefficients were found to be positive. The results obtained were compared with empirical models for the calculation of interaction coefficients available in literature.

"Plastic wastes become a huge problem day after day due to the growth of plastic industry. Hence, plastic wastes are used as a raw material for other industries to eliminate this problem. Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET), which is a commonly used for plastic bottles, may be used as a reductant for iron production because of its C and H content. In this study, composite pellets containing iron ore concentrate, flux and reductant were prepared. Crystallized PET bottles and coke were used as reductant after ground. The prepared pellets were reduced at 1400°C for 30 min. and iron nuggets were produced successfully. Usage of waste PET purely as reductant in composite pellets gives a higher metallization degree and proper carbon content than coke or PET and coke mixture.IntroductionPlastics can be seen everywhere, especially at packaging industry in our common life. The increase of plastic usage ends up with an important problem, the increase of plastic wastes. Many studies have been carried out about usage of plastics as reductant in blast furnace such as Ogaki et al.[1], Heo and Baek [2], Saridede [3], Minoru et al.[4], etc. Besides, Kato et al. [5], Nomura and Kato [ 6] and Rongfang et al. [7] have pointed out the use of plastics in coke ovens regarding to its calorific content. In EAF steelmaking, a mixture of coal/coke and plastics can be used as an energy resource instead of only coal or coke. [8] Also, the usage of PET and PC in self-reducing composite pellets increased the reduction rate. [12]PET (Polyethylene terephthalate ), which is commonly used for soft drink plastic bottles, is an important municipal waste due to its C and H content. Its molecular formula is (C10H8O 4)n. Demir and Dincer showed that PET can be crystallized at 250°C to have the ability to be ground to a size of -100 µm. [11]"

"Mixed ionic and electronic conducting (MIEC) ceramic membranes are HeteroFoaM's which play an essential role in a number of energy conversion related systems including the solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC), oxygen separation and permeation membranes, partial oxidization membrane reactors for natural gas processing, and high temperature electrolysis cells. Dual phase oxygen membranes consisting of an ionic conducting phase Ceo.sGdo.z02 (CGO) and an electronic conductive phase C0Fe204 (CFO) were fabricated and characterized by structural (XRD), microstructural (SEM-EDS) and broadband dielectric measurement techniques. In-situ measurements of the dielectric properties of working oxygen separation membranes are presented which indicate that the material's dielectric behavior can be an indicator for MIECperformance.IntroductionCeramic membranes which transport oxygen ions play an essential role in a number of energy conversion related systems including the solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) [l ], oxygen separation and permeation membranes in the commercial and nuclear arena [2, 3], partial oxidization membrane reactors for natural gas processing [4], and high temperature electrolysis cells [5]. For the electrolyte functions, the membranes must transport oxygen ions only. On the other hand, permeation membranes, typically used in combustion devices to support oxy-fuel combustion or for partial oxidation reactions involving the production of synthesis gases, require mixed oxygen ion and electronic conduction (MIEC). Traditionally the tailoring of the ratio of ionic conductivity to the materials electronic conductivity, measured as the transference number, has been accomplished by the introduction of aliovalent doping elements creating point defects in the material facilitating the diffusion of charged species. However, several decades of research have not yet produced single phase materials which possess the concomitant ionic and electronic conductivity required for use in membrane separation applications. It is clear that novel ""dual phase"" heterogeneous materials will be required and that the surface reactions of these materials will be of particular importance as the industry moves toward thin films membranes [6]."

This paper sets the scene for the Australian-Asian Pacific Course and Conference on Pyrometallurgy for complex materials and wastes. The relentless presence of competitiveness is rehearsed as the source of the current trends towards continuous improvement and benchmarking. While this might be expected to lead to more spending on pyrometallurgy, the opposite appears to be the case. The paper examines the reasons and suggests that we face an increasing challenge for selective developments that can lead to sustainable competitive advantage - both in mineral and in waste processing.

The SKS copper smelting process was jointly developed by Shuikoushan Mining Corp. and ENFI (Beijing Central Engineering and Research Institute for Non-ferrous Metallurgical Industries) in China. It is a new bath copper concentrate smelting process with oxygen enriched air. The pilot plant testwork was completed successfully in 1993. SKS has demonstrated to be an advanced bottom blown smelting process. This technology got the First Class Prize of Scientific and Technological Progress awarded by CNNC (China National Non-ferrous Metal Industry Corp.) in 1994. The SKS process has significant capital and operating cost advantages. Its environmental and industrial safety and hygiene performance represents a substantial improvement when compared to conventional technologies. The technology has generated great interest in the Chinese metallurgical industry. Feasibility studies and basic designs have been carried out to incorporate in retrofit and green field smelter projects in China and abroad. This paper describes the history of the pilot plant operating data (50 tonnes dry feed/day), and discusses the features of the SKS technology, its application and possible future trends.

Mexicana de Cobre, which is part of Grupo Mexico, carried out studies for the construction of a copper refinery in the La Caridad Metallurgical Complex located in Nacozari, in the state of Sonora, Mexico. After the studies were concluded, the decision was made to construct a 180,000 t/y refinery using the state of the art permanent cathode Kidd Process. The basic engineering was developed by Fluor Daniel and the detail engineering and the construction were carried out in record time by the Mexican company Bufete Industrial. During the construction phase, Grupo Mexico decided to expand the refinery, and actions were taken to increase its capacity by an additional 120,000 t/y; the final result was a refinery capable of producing 300,000 tonnes of grade A cathode per year. Construction began in January 1996, and the operation of the first stage began on July 1, 1997. The operation of the second stage commenced on January 7, 1998. The capacity of the first stage was reached in November, 1997 and the total capacity of the refinery was achieved in May, 1998. This presentation describes the process and equipment installed in the refinery, the steps leading to the start-up, the operation and the results obtained during the first two years, the handling of anodes with high impurity contents, and the problems confronted and the way they have been solved. It also includes personnel productivity, the control parameters and the most relevant data on the operation of the process.
