In this paper, the forced features and dynamic behaviors of stone-column composite foundation are concisely related. The characteristics of Rayleigh wave method is summarised. This method is proposed in which, the stress ratio of the stone-column to the surrounding soil and the bear­ing capacity of the composite foundation are determined. Through the engineering cases, it is shown that, checking and evaluating the composite foundation in this method, is feasible, with high speed and low cost.

Conventional stoping in hard rock mining is largely considered an operational environment. This paper suggests that stoping falls within the realm of a project management environment typified by uncertainty, variation, and large numbers of interdependencies. Stoping was then equated to a micro-project with many simultaneous activities that had to be executed accurately using finite resources within limited shift durations in order to reach specific goals. Critical chain project management (CCPM) principles were applied to the stoping activities, and the results showed that the number of blasts per panel can be significantly increased by successfully moving the distribution of work as close as possible to the start of shift. Critical chain principles also assisted in facilitating re-focusing and teamwork among stoping crews as well as between day- and night-shift crews. The main recorded success was in managing inherent protective capacities/local contingencies/fat/buffers that are found in all projects. The impact on mine health and safety (MHS) was significant as individual operators and crews became convinced that they could perform all stoping tasks (activities) without compromising accuracy or speed.

From July 1, 1949, to July 1, 1950, the Bureau of Mines conducted the research and technologic work on coal and coal products that is summarized in this report. The research, described in this fifteenth of a series of resumes, is presented in more detail in publications (see footnote references) that appeared during the fiscal year, though in some cases research data are given that have not been published elsewhere. Results of research in the experimental coal mine, on explosives, and on gas and dust explosions will be found in Bureau of Mines Report of Investigations 4228, Annual Report of Research and Technologic Work on Explosives, Explosions, and Flames, Fiscal Year 1950. An over-all view of our coal, oil, end natural-gas reserves was presented, and the future possibilities for the, production of synthetic liquid fuels from coal were delineated.3/

A few months ago, Congress passed, and President Bush signed, a national energy bill. Designed to decrease the nation’s dependence on foreign sources of energy, the bill earmarked several billion dollars to increase the use of U.S. coal reserves. The bill also modified permitting regulations to speed up development of the coal reserves located on federal land. Coal currently supplies more than half of the nation’s electricity needs. And as housing starts continue to in-crease and with the nation’s appetite for electronic gadgetry, the demand for energy in the United States will only go up. That means coal producers must expand production while at the same time containing costs so they can enjoy this period of improved coal prices.

This paper describes a very exacting tunneling project. Planning and technical realization of this service and transportation tunnel was especially difficult as a matter of vibration control, because the tunnel is situated only a few meters under Maria Hospital, which is one of the most busiest hospitals in Helsinki. In this hospital there are many departments for bedpatients, research and treatment with high-tech equipment, operational surgery and a big laboratory. Besides access tunnels are situated near several apartment buildings. The functionality of the tunnel required the placement of the access tunnels to be straight towards these apartment buildings for which special care for blast induced air pressure had to be taken.

Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is not just a catch-cry. It is an essential component of every-day life in many professions, including accountancy, law and public administration. Without realising it, many other professions are undertaking CPD activities in an un-structured way, including mining, metallurgy and geology. Examples include Annual and technical conferences of The Institute, Branch-level technical meetings and in-company training and development programmes and technical exchanges. Whilst approaches to date have undoubtedly helped keep the Australian mining industry at the forefront of mining technology, one cannot presume that technological development will stand still. To meet this challenge, human resource development must keep pace, not only to optimize utilization of technological developments, but more importantly to develop firm bases from which new products, processes and technologies can be developed within Australia.

Beginning from the point of view that process control of ore flotation can be approached by on-line analysis of processing behavior, an equation was developed which has characteristics useful for a multi-variable feedback loop. The application of this equation to optimizing control with a data acquisition system will be discussed in Part 11. OBJECTIVE OF CONTROL The purpose of developing a feedback method for concentrator control is to provide a means for determining ore processing behavior in order that data describing the ore can be used to make appropriate changes in control conditions while the ore continues to flow through the flotation circuit. In absence of simple linear relationships between pairs of variables in the flotation process, attention is directed to the need for a generalized relationship which possibly would incorporate all pertinent variables. It would be possible to apply such an equation to the control of variables in a concentrator in real time according to operational requirements as ore gradually changes in quality and processing behavior. To meet this objective, it is necessary to define relationships describing flotation performance in terms of performance variables capable of being measured on-line, either with on-line instruments and analyzers or with manual methods lending themselves to quick determination of meaningful information. Relationships derived to meet this objective form a model for the flotation process. The evaluation of flotation parameters of the ore and the execution of control on the basis of the derived information while the ore is continuing through the process would constitute a feedback control system. Data for the following control and performance variables can be made available: 1) ore feed rate, 2) collector addition rate, 3) lime addition rate, 4) pulp density, 5) assay or multiple assays in feed, tails, or concentrate sufficient for material balancing, 6) particle size distribution in flotation feed, 7) froth height, and 8) frother addition rate. Other process variables, such as flotation air input and mechanical agitation intensity, are usually not considered as control variables and were not taken into account in this analysis. Other data, such as that describing the ore, would be useful for concentrator process control. However, information of this type (such as ore hardness, grain size of the mineral, chemical species of the mineral, and ore surface properties) being not presently measurable in the on-line sense, has the effect of causing disturbances in the system which can be detected only indirectly. The process control system being sought must recognize disturbances by their effect on measured performance followed by determining control changes to compensate for them in meeting the objectives of improved performance (perhaps higher throughput, maximum return, etc.). A suitable model for the process having capability of recognizing the effects of ore disturbances should provide the means for introducing proper compensation through control changes. This would be done by processing on-line data with the model to calculate coefficients reflecting ore characteristics. This procedure can only be applied in a typical flotation system when on-line data can be processed at faster rates than the usual rate at which the ore in flotation feed takes on significantly different characteristics. For example, material balance data can be accumulated in approximately 5-min intervals using on-line X-ray fluorescence analysis. The flotation system time constant might be 15 min including grinding. Ore changes having time constants longer than 1 hr could be accommodated using on-line feedback control by this procedure. Operational effectiveness is fundamental to any operation, becoming highly topical in those experiencing less than optimal output from their fleets. It is all encompassing aiming to identify those factors that could be improved within production and suggesting solutions in order to optimise the existing fleet and obtain the greatest capital return on expenditure.Argyle Diamond Mine (ADM) is a large open cut diamond mine located in the East Kimberley region of Western Australia, approximately 180 km south of Kununurra. It is owned and operated by Rio Tinto on a two week on/two week off roster fly-in/fly-out from Perth or drive in/drive out from Kununurra. Through benchmarking the operation between January and June 2002, a study was undertaken allowing identification of areas falling below target. Following this, analysis of annualised hours and production downtimes were undertaken to quantify the potential gains of improvements in these areas. Strategies were then identified as stated in the 2002 mine plan, in operational effectiveness meetings, and by staff members. This project aimed to maximise direct working hours through determination of the main issues hindering performance. External and internal factors were considered and a continuous improvement program (CIP) was developed. The CIP aimed at internal site-based improvement teams to identify and implement solutions for improvement on a day-to-day basis.

This paper concerns the optimum arrangement of the buoyancy module, which is used for stable dynamic motion and structure stability of the marine flexible riser. The main method of this study is simulation-based design using Genetic Algorithm (G.A) for optimum design and Multi-body dynamic for simulation. The marine riser connects the vessel and the seabed-tracked vehicle. The motion of the riser affects the motion of the vessel and the vehicle. In this study, a marine riser of the deep-seabed integrated mining system (Figure 1) is used. This riser has a strong effect on efficient transfer of minerals. So, the buoyancy module must be equipped to supplement problems of the structure stability and the dynamic motion. Positions and quantities of the equipping buoyancy modules are determined by the at sea experiment (Figure 2). But this method is not easy because the actual sea experiment is expensive, time-consuming and dangerous (Figure 3). Thus, the position and quantity must be determined by simulation-based design. The dynamic analysis models of the riser and the buoyancy module were built in the commercial software DAFUL. In the marine environment, factors affecting behavior are current, drag force, etc.

"The Mount Douglas Granite constitutes the eastern part of the Saint George Batholith and contains the youngest, most differentiated phases of the batholith. It also contains extensive endogranitic, low-grade. Sn- W-Mo-bearing sheeted vein systems. Early phases of the Mount Douglas Granite are coarse- to medium-grained, seriate granites that represent the slowly cooled carapace of the intrusion. Late phases are medium- to fine-grained, equigranular and porphyritic granites that were accompanied by repeated and widespread fracturing of the carapace and injection of mineralizing fluids. These granites represent a highly differentiated suite with ""A "" type affinities developed in a ""within plate"" transitional to ""syn-collision"" tectonic setting. 4oAr/ 39Ar dates for biotites from the various phases indicate emplacement circa 367 Ma.The linear distribution of some phases in the Mount Douglas Granite and the systematic orientations of sheeted veins along tensional fractures indicate structural control on granite emplacement and vein distribution. This type of relatively passive endogranitic mineralization is unique in the granites of southern New Brunswick and contrasts markedly with highly fluidized systems operative elsewhere in the area. IntroductionInvestigation of Sn-W-Mo occurrences in New Brunswick has shown that most of this mineralization is associated with late, highly differentiated phases of post-orogenic (Acadian) granitoid magmatism that occurred during Devonian and Early Carboniferous time (Ruitenberg and Fyffe, 1982; Taylor et al., 1988). The polymetallic Mount Pleasant Sn-W-Mo deposit (Ruitenberg, 1967, 1972; Kooiman et al., 1986)and the Burnt Hill W deposit are two orebodies of this type in New Brunswick. Numerous smaller deposits associated with these granitoid rocks in southwestern New Brunswick have been documented in previous investigations (Ruitenberg, 1967, 1968; Ruitenberg and Fyffe, 1982; Taylor et al., 1985; Lentz, 1985)."

The computer program described in this user's guide provides for the static, three-dimensional, linear and nonlinear analysis of structural and geological systems by the finite element method. The guide describes the capabilities and general features of the program and shows how input is prepared. A number of recent advances in finite element theory and computer technology are incorporated in the program. Nonlinear material properties are provided for, including isotropic, anisotropic, and time-dependent material properties, gravity loading, simulation of a sequence of excavation or construction, and a slip or joint element. The finite elements include beam, rod, axisymmetric and plane quadrilateral, hexahedron, thick shell, axisymmetric and plane joint, and a three-dimensional joint. The program also has an automatic mesh generator to minimize user input preparation for continuum finite element meshes.

Possibilities and Working of the Specific Agglomeration of Fibrous Materials and Residues Plant based fibrous materials are becoming of increasing interest in a multitude of industrial applications. Main advantages are the specific lower energy demand and virtually closed CO2 cycle, excellent mechanical properties based on low density as well as a high level of recyclables. In contrast, processing and handling of such materials is associated with a number of challenges. These challenges are mainly related to specific morphological characteristics in correlation to fibre length and structure (branching and splices). Specific problems in further processing steps including transport, dosage or storage for natural fibre compounding, result from form-locking bonds leading to burling, clusters or plaits. Technologies of fibre processing are well known, but other than textile based technologies they generally result in intermediate goods which do not allow direct industrial application. The investigation to be presented is based on results of recent research activities and shows two possible technical solutions of innovative fibre agglomeration procedures. These methods allow the conversion of middle to long fibres into a form, which eases further processing and dosage significantly and therefore allows free flowing too. The procedures are based on the working principles of rolling and winding technology. Within the work, both of the patented methods and their respected lab-scaled devices will be described. Further, results will be shown for an up-scaled rolling agglomeration unit applying the developed principle and consisting of multiple process zones. Possible variations of the resulting product characteristics and the impact of different process parameters will be discussed based on the trials with natural fibre (hemp and flax) agglomeration. As a main outcome of the research, product qualities can be supplied according to the requirements of the specific application in correlation to agglomerate strength, porosity or form. In conclusion, recent developments for specific methods of characterization will be depicted.

Industrial Minerals commodity profiles are continued from May's Annual Review issue. Diatomite G. Coombs, Manville Sales Corp. Growth in US diatomite production continued to lag in 1986. The US Bureau of Mines estimated that 580 kt (640,000 st) were produced last year. This is a 1%0 growth over 1985. The cumulative growth from the 1982 low point is 4.4%. Present production, though, is still only 90% of the high tonnage of 1979. The industry will see increased competitive activity with the start-ups of two new mines and production facilities in California and Oregon. US production has come primarily from Lompoc, CA, Bassalt, Clark Station, and Lovelock, NV, and Quincy, WA. New production, probably with capacities of 45 kt/a (50,000 stpy) each, have started near Burney, CA, and Vale, OR. Eagle Picher's new, full-line filter aid and filler plant at Celatom, Vale, OR, was dedicated in August. The plant uses diatomite from the Celatom mining district in Juntura, OR. Grefco's new filter aid and filler plant near Burney, CA, was ready in July. It produced flux calcined products through a single kiln and can handle both bag and bulk shipments. The operations are in Shata County with the plant and mine at the same site. Manville Specialties Group is moving its Filtration and Minerals Division headquarters and research staffs to Lompoc, CA. The move is intended to strengthen response and performance by locating research, marketing, and production close together. Diatomite is processed in three methods: natural, calcined, and flux calcined. The natural is dried to remove water and is particle size classified. Calcined or straight calcined products have been sintered to modify particle size or permeability. Flux calcination, or flux sintering, has a stronger influence on permeability and also benefits color. The unique structure of diatomite is used in a range of particle sizes from fine paint fillers, to coarser filter aids, to granular aggregates. Dimension stone L. Meade, Geomapping Associates Ltd. 1986 was another good year for dimension stone production. The trend toward using marble, granite, limestone, sandstone, and slate has created an increasing demand. According to US Bureau of Mines 1986 estimates, 1.1 Mt (1.2 million st) of dimension stone, with a value of $173 million, was produced by 200 companies. This is an increase from 1985, where 220 companies produced 1 Mt (1.12 million st) valued at $172 million. The increased production volume and decreased unit value is due to the competition from imports. The net import reliance in 1986 was 68% compared to 62% in 1985. The value of imports was $374 million in 1986 versus $295 million the year before. In an effort to maintain their market share, domestic finishers, particularly in the granite industry, continued to upgrade plants and machinery during 1986. In addition, offshore dollars have financed a number of fabricating facilities in North America that will finish imported rough stock. It is hoped that this increased domestic production capability will capitalize on a devalued US dollar. The trend has been for growth in stone usage and market. This trend is continuing with increased public awareness and desire for natural stone in buildings. The area of greatest market growth is expected to be in residential and interior decorative stone usage. Use of sophisticated, automated equipment has made the cost more affordable. Now lobbies, foyers, and specialty rooms are being clad in stone. Dolomite J. Welshimer, National Lime & Stone Co. About three-quarters of dolomite production is used as construction aggregates and 10% to 20% is sold or used as an industrial mineral. Total limestone and dolomite consumed for chemical and metallurgical purposes is about 136 Mt/a (150 million stpy). Sales of industrial dolomitic products were somewhat stronger in 1986 than levels recorded in the early 1980s. Some of the sales' strength, however, can be attributed to reductions in the number of active mining and processing operations. The industry will probably undergo further consolidation by the end of this decade. This will be due primarily to the continued softening in demand by the steel industry. Dolomitic limestone deposits being mined for raw materials for the steel, glass, and refractory in¬dustries are generally 54% calcium carbonate and 45% magnesium carbonate by weight. Impurities composed of silicon, aluminum, iron, sulfur, and phosphorous, represent less than 1%. The heaviest concentration of high purity, surface mineable dolomite in the US is in northwestern Ohio. Crushed and sized dolomitic limestone is a basic raw material for the iron and steel industry. Studies were carried out to determine whether filtration rate changes observed in an iron ore concentrator were due to variations in particle shape. It was confirmed that ores mined from different locations differed in filtration rates by as much as 60%. However, when image analysis was used to quantify the shapes of the individual particles in the filtration feed, it was found that the particle shapes showed almost no variation, and the shapes did not correlate with the filtration rate. It was also determined that the filtration rate variations were not caused by changes in particle size distribution. These results suggest that the differences in filtration rate are due to factors other than size and shape, such as surface chemistry.

Systematic leakage surveys of natural-gas transmission lines not only aid in the conservation of gas, but can be made to show direct financial returns of large magnitude. 1. Such surveys reveal the actual leakage from the lines, and indicate repairs to be made in order, to eliminate unnecessary waste. 2. Tests on lines, after repairs are made, show the actual saving that has been accomplished. 3. Tests on newly constructed lines reveal the presence of leakage that should be eliminated before the lines are put into service.

In recent years, one large mine collapse and numerous smaller bump events have resulted in a renewed interest in coal bump research. With numerical modeling, the Energy Release Rate (ERR) calculation quantifies the ?release? of the gravitational potential energy of the rock mass into the environment as mining progresses. This release of energy can occur passively in the form of heat and sound or dynamically in the form of pillar bumps or rock bursts. From the initial application of a calculated energy release rate in the deep hard-rock mines of South Africa, the ERR was found to have a significant correlation with the risk or potential of damaging coal bumps or rock bursts. In this research, an ERR calculation is incorporated into the modern LaModel program to facilitate the analysis for potential coal bumps. Initially the ERR calculations in LaModel are verified using a case study of cut sequences originally modeled using the MULSIM/NL program. Then, the ERR calculations are applied to a bump-prone mine in Southern Appalachia were a number of different pillar recovery cut sequences were used in order to minimize the risk of bumps.

A review is presented of developments in mill liners to improve performance in terms of wear, impact, as well as mill grind and throughput. These developments are in response to the growth in size of SAG mills and the use of larger ball loadings and ball sizes in modern SAG milling practice. Shell liner developments include specific mechanical design features such as special bolting, directed metal flow to prolong liner life and a focus on the process aspects of the mills to provide more effective grinding motion with reduced wasteful ball-on-liner impacts. Grate design developments aim to provide high throughput of material, especially in the larger size fractions, while providing good impact and wear life. Curved pulp lifters are designed to ensure, at high mill speeds, complete discharge of coarse solids from the mill.

GENERALTHE coal deposit, where it is being worked, consists of a bed of brown coal varying in thickness from 120 ft. to 200 ft., covered by an overburden of clay, drift, loam, etc., of a thickness of 22 ft. to 40 ft., and averaging 28 ft.The overburden is first entirely removed from the coal, and then the coal is excavated by. large revolving shovels which work at the bottom of the hole or open cut in the coal and deliver it in shovel bucketfuls to the transport system. The shovels owned by the Commission and available for this coal excavation are two Bucyrus steam revolving shovels, one being type 150B, weighing 150 tons, having a 21-cub. yd. bucket, and capable of digging a 47-ft. face; and the other being type 175B, weighing200 tons, having a 31-cub. yd. bucket, and capable of digging a 61-ft. face.In addition to these two steam shovels, the Commission has recently obtained a No. 250 Ruston electric revolving shovel weighing 340 tons, and having a bucket of 10 cub. yd. capacity, and capable of digging a 75-ft. face. When this electric shovel has been erected it will replace the steam shovels on the coal excavation, and the permanent transport system has been designed to take delivery of the coal from its bucket.The duty to be performed by the transport system is to take the coal from the shovels, elevate it out of the open cut, transport it to the screening house, deliver it iuto the hoppers at the top of this building, then to take the coal after it has passed over the screens and distribute the required grades to the power house and to the briquetting plant.

In decision making support system, that are used in various fields of environmental protection (environmental impact assessment, environmental management systems, setting environmental standards and regulation, etc.), it is often important to apply various mathematical environmental engineering models. The question of linking environmetal engineering modeling to decision making support system used in environmental protection is not yet methodically solved. The reasons for that could be manifold. Decison making support systems, used in environmental protection, because they are simply taken from bussines decision making, are not often adequate for specific problems raised in environmental protection. On the other hand, there are great number of types of models in environmental engineering, what urges the problem of finding the way of their proper linking with decision making support systems. The application of fuzzy logic in that field is estimated as one of possible solution of the problem.

The secondary copper industry is comprised of numerous enterprises which collectively employ many of the recovery and refining processes now used in primary plants as well as many other processes that are unique to the industry. Effective methods are used for identifying and segregating all types of scrap according to widely accepted standard classifications. Segregated scrap and waste materials usually require some preliminary processing to remove both valuable and deleterious associated constituents. Smelting, melting, alloying, and pyrorefining are common methods used for producing secondary metal, but operating techniques usually differ from primary metal operations because of the difference in physical and chemical properties of the respective raw materials. Some copper scrap is converted to copper chemicals rather than to refined metals or alloys. Recovery efficiencies of all processes are reasonably high, and the quality of products meets rigid specifications.
