Due to high concentration of NaOH in the digested slurry after scheelite digestion, it is diluted to about 4N before filtration to separate sodium tungstate solution from the sludge (residue). However, in practice there may be deviations in the normality of NaOH present in the slurry. There may also be variations in the temperature of the slurry and filtration time. Slight variations in these parameters could cause tungsten losses in the sludge via the back reaction: Ca(OH)2 + Na2WO4? CaWO4 + 2NaOH This paper pertains to the effect of normality, temperature and time on the tungsten losses in the sludge that is separated from ?diluted-scheelite-slurry-in-NaOH? via filtration. Results indicated that tungsten losses in the filtered residue (sludge) were quite significant when the slurry temperature was kept at 70°C or higher. The effect of high temperature was less significant at the slurry normality of 3.6 or higher. Combination of low slurry normality (<3.6) and high temperature (>60°C) resulted into large W-losses in the sludge.

"Froth flotation is the most widely used and economic means of concentrating metal sulfide ores such as those containing copper, lead, zinc, nickel, molybdenum, and pyrite. Also recoverable are other metal species that are often associated with sulfide ores such as cobalt, platinum, gold, silver, etc. Most of the initial developments made with the process of froth flotation in the early 20th century were based on the processing of metal sulfide ores. It is the relative technical and economic ease of floating metal sulfide minerals with small amounts of appropriate frothers and sulfur containing (thio) collectors that has been a major economic driving force behind the rapid expansion in the supply of metals such as copper, lead, zinc, and nickel that has occurred in the world's economy in the last 50 years. This author estimates that 1.6 billion tons of sulfide ores are processed each year (1980) in the free world based on the froth flotation process.While there has been a tendency for the quality of metal sulfide ores in any one geographic location to deteriorate over time due to mining intensity, the overall global supply of sulfide minerals is still very large. Thus, the physical supply side of sulfide ore concentrates has not been under strong technology improvement pressure with increasing metal demands. Part of this is due to the ability of capital to consistently move to new geographic locations having suitable grade sulfide ores. In these moves, the actual froth flotation technology used (including collector chemicals) has had to change little. As an illustration of this trend, of the approximately 80,000 metric tons of thio collectors used commercially (1980) in the free world, almost 98% were known and manufactured in some form 25 years ago (1). This is clearly not typical of reagent development in other process related industries. In addition, the industrial scale practice of froth flotation applied to sulfide ores has proceeded since the 1920 s with often little direct (predictive) scientific explanation due to the extreme complexity of the flotation process. Empirical testing has been a mainstay of industrial flotation reagent development and use. Even today there is often strong disagreement between researchers as to the mechanisms of chemical flotation practices that have been performed successfully at an industrial scale for many years."

The Central Maratoto Valley in the Coromandel Peninsula contains a sequence of veins in pervasively altered dacite + andesites of the Waipupu Formation. We recognise at least eight different vein types: (1) pyrite stringers, (2) quartz + carbonate veins, (3) crystalline quartz veins, (4) carbonate veins, (5) chlorite + carbonate veins, (6) siderite veinlets, (7) siderite + carbonate veins and (8) carbonate + pyrite veins. The overall temporal trend of the veins is from early pyrite to quartz and then to late carbonate veins. Carbonate veins and pyrite stringers both form planar and irregular veins, whereas some carbonate veins have diffuse contacts with the wall rock. Gold and base metal sulphides are associated with some of the quartz + carbonate veins. Textures within the veins reflect open space filling and multi-phase reopening. A partial record of hydrothermal activity has been preserved by vein crosscutting relationships, hydrothermal alteration minerals and fluid inclusions. Hydrothermal alteration minerals display zonation from south to north. The alteration increases from unaltered to weak propylitic alteration of andesite in the south (MVRCDC1), to sericitic alteration of andesite and dacite in the north (MVRCDC3). The alteration assemblage is dominantly sericitic, with no adularia present, drawing parallels to the Thames region where there is no adularia.

In addition to a range of pyrometallurgical options, Mintek specialises in DC arc furnace technology and has pilot plant facilities up to 5.6 MVA, as well as a strong base in process and arc modelling. Industrial processes have been developed for ferrochromium production, ilmenite smelting, and cobalt recovery from slag. Recent work has been done on such processes as the production of ferronickel from laterite ores, the fuming and condensation of magnesium, and the recovery of platinum group metals from &apos;difficult&apos; feedstocks.

The United States Bureau of Mines has made a study of roof control in 68 mines operating in the Pittsburgh coal bed in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Ohio. In making these studies, much information was also obtained on various exact methods of development and pillar extraction as practiced by this large group of mines. It is proposed in this paper to describe these methods, by which this group of mines in 1931, a year of reduced industrial activity, produced 28,123,000 tons of bituminous coal - 7.4 percent of the national production for the same year and an amount equal to the combined production of the coal mired in the States of Alabama, Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming. The results of these studies, insofar as they pertain to the prevention of injuries from falls of roof, have been published by the Bureau of Mines. In this paper only a few mines typical of each system will be described; however, should the reader be interested in other details with respect to these mines, he may refer to the following publications: T.P. 522, 1932, 43 pp. Falls of roof and coal in mines operating in the Pittsburgh coal bed in Marion and Monongalia Counties, W. The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority&apos;s Wheaton Station and tunnel design was completed and offered for bid in the Spring of 1983. The format was unique to the Authority: a four part, four fiscal year contract developed in response to funding limitations with construction divided into four stages allowing the maximum amount of work to be done each year for the funds available. The bid was based on the entire contract, but was orginally awarded for only the first year&apos;s work. Each year&apos;s work had a maximum funding limitation thus safe guarding the Authority from a grossly unbalanced bid. The Authority&apos;s estimate for this work was $83,871,524. The low bid came in at 61% of this for a total low bid of $51,512,058. The low bidder was ILBAU America Corporation whose home offices are in Austria. Following receipt of the bids (and resolution of objections cited by other bidders who felt that the job could not be done for the $51 Million dollar figure), a Notice-To-Proceed was given on October 5, 1983. The construction contract allows a Value Engineering Change Proposal, called a VECP which is initiated and developed by the contractor to change the drawings, specifications or other requirements of the contract. Among other things the VECP should decrease the contract price while maintaining the service life, reliability, ease of maintenance, and standardized features and appearance and not require an unacceptable extension of the contract time. A VECP must estimate the amount of the net savings

Tholeiitic intrusion-hosted nickel (PGE-Cu) sulfide deposits are under-represented in Australia’s inventory of known resources of this deposit type, relative to regions globally with comparable geology. To support discovery of major new deposits, a continental scale analysis of Australia’s potential for tholeiitic intrusion-hosted nickel (PGE-Cu) sulfide deposits is being undertaken. The analysis applies a mineral systems approach to map the four essential components of the ore-forming systems:1. sources of ore constituents2. crustal and mantle lithospheric architecture3. energy sources or drivers of the ore-forming systems4. gradients in ore depositional physico-chemical parameters.The results reveal several regions of Australia with potential for discovery of large tholeiitic intrusion-hosted nickel (PGE-Cu) sulfide deposits, mostly around the margins of Archean and Proterozoic lithospheric blocks. "Some non-flotation chemistries are added to flotation circuits directly and indirectly to control issues such as scaling and dust. Since the dosage levels are generally not very large, a standard laboratory float test may not be able to determine the effect a specific chemical has on the productivity of the flotation circuit. Hudbay and Ashland Water Technologies developed a laboratory testing protocol that uses kinetic float studies to test the effect of normal to extreme doses of antiscalant and dust chemistries (5 ppm to 500 ppm). Laboratory results indicate that this protocol helps to predict the potential interference that a particular chemistry will have on the flotation circuit.INTRODUCTIONFrom a chemical perspective, flotation is a very complex system involving more than the reagents used for flotation. Along with collectors, frothers, modifiers, suppressants and activators, there can be antiscalants for water treatment, dust suppressants used in the mining process, residual flocculants from recycled thickener overflows, grinding aids, and many other types of chemicals that are added upstream of a flotation circuit. Although these other chemicals are usually used at very low doses, it is important to know if they affect the flotation process detrimentally in the event of a spill or a build up from recycled water.Laboratory flotation testing of these chemicals characterizes their effects, but testing at expected doses in the float can mask the effects of the chemicals in the plant. Also, simple tests that do not measure the kinetics of flotation do not reveal the effects the other chemicals have on the flotation circuit. Thus, a new flotation protocol was needed to expose the full effects of chemical additives and to assist in choosing the chemical with the lowest potential for a negative effect.FLOTATION KINETICSMeasuring recovery kinetics in a laboratory flotation cell is a well-established procedure: analyzing concentrates taken in a timed sequence to determine the recovery rate of individual cells in a flotation circuit. Coal is one of our basic sources of energy (heat, power, light) and an essential raw material for most metallurgical processing. More than two-thirds of the electricity currently produced by thermal powerplants in the United States is generated by coal, and it is expected that coal will continue to be the major fuel used for this application at least through the 1970&apos;s. Coke produced from bituminous coking coal is the principal fuel of iron blast furnaces, and unless ironmaking methods change greatly, coal will continue to maintain a dominant role in iron-ore processing and steel manufacturing for many years. Export markets are expected to increase also, adding to the overall increased demand for coal. Accompanying the increased total requirement, however, will be an ever-increasing demand for higher quality coals, specifically, coals of low sulfur content. Except for special-purpose coals such as those used for the production if coke and ceramics where impurities in the fuel contaminate the end product, the amount of sulfur in coal has been only a minor consideration in the selection of a particular coal for fuel. Major considerations, particularly for the coals used to generate electric power, have been availability and cost. An increased national concern for control of air pollution, however, particularly that resulting from the emission of sulfur oxides in stack gases to the atmosphere, has led to more rigid specifications on coal quality, and the sulfur content of coals will become increasingly more important in the future.

A risk study was carried out at the Cerrejon coal mine in order to assess the impacts of pit slope failure in terms of safety of personnel and destruction of equipment with economic consequences. Results of the assessment enabled the definition of risk treatment requirements and the identification of key aspects to consider in a risk treatment plan. The approach included the following tasks: (1) Assessment of the total probability of failure (POF) representative of the stability conditions of typical footwall and highwall slopes. For this purpose, stability analyses were carried out to define the Design POF, which accounts for the variability of strength parameters and represents the normal conditions considered for slope design. Strength parameters for highwall slope analysis were derived from borehole data obtained with a geotechnical drilling campaign. The Total POF was estimated through the use of Source Response Diagrams (SRD) in order to incorporate other sources of uncertainty not accounted for, like changes in geometry, variability of rock conditions due to geological or operational factors, changes in groundwater conditions and occurrence of seismic events. (2) Assessment of the consequences of footwall and highwall slope failure on safety of personnel. The assessment was performed through the use of event tree analysis to establish the probability of fatality caused by slope failures, from the Total POF defined in the previous task. This analysis required the evaluation of personal exposure to slope failures. Also, the assessment included benchmarking of acceptability criteria in terms of probability of fatality and the evaluation of options of risk mitigation to comply with these criteria. (3) Assessment of the consequences of footwall and highwall slope failure in terms of economic losses associated with impact on equipment. The analysis included the evaluation of equipment exposure to slope failures, and it was performed through event tree analysis to establish the probability of an economic loss associated to total or partial lost of equipment, from the total POF value defined in the first task. The magnitude of the economic losses was estimated from the costs of damaged equipment, lost production and site restoration. Options of risk mitigation were also examined in terms of economic losses. The risk assessment process applied to the Cerrejón mine showed how the system can be applied to evaluate the consequences of failure in terms of personnel safety and economics and to identify the more adequate risk mitigation options. The system can be an extremely powerful tool in the mine design process and provides the opportunity to rationalize the geotechnical information requirements, once the risk criteria have been defined by management. The main purpose of this paper is to present the process; therefore, the emphasis has been put on the methodology followed rather than on the actual results obtained.

China, Mexico, Spain and Turkey are the leading producers of celestite (strontium sulfate), the most common strontium mineral. Of an estimated 510 kt (562,000 st) of celestite produced worldwide during 2004, 98 percent was produced in those countries. Deposits of strontianite (strontium carbonate), another strontium mineral, have been identified in China and Malawi. Relatively small quantities are reported from the deposit in China. Although celestite deposits occur in the United States, no domestic celestite has been mined since 1959.

This paper reviews recent positive developments in Europe on the regulation of gold mining. However, it also examines the problem that while gold projects may be bankable and technically and environmental defensible, the odds tend to be stacked against granting of an environmental permit. The historic background to this situation is examined and current developments and initiatives are critically analysed. Standards and benchmarks for the industry have been established across the community and these have a strong influence in European Union accession (and aspiring) states as well. While this is welcome in regard to improving environmental performance, it also represents a significant milestone with mining (and particularly gold mining) now æon the mapÆ as a legitimate enterprise, a situation that was patently not the case prior to 2003. At the project level, very frequently, the difficult biophysical problems are addressed and satisfactorily dealt with according to the new regulations, but still there are problems regards trust and acceptance that underpin a æsocial licenceÆ. What goes wrong and how can companies deal with the social/environmental issues that lead to entrenched views and concerns, irrespective of any amount of demonstration of good practice and corporate social responsibility? What is the role of the non-governmental organisation (NGO) and are they as accountable and responsible as they should be? The findings presented draw upon recent experience with the environmental permitting of projects in Spain, Greece, Romania, Bulgaria and Serbia on behalf of Australian, Canadian and British companies as well as international funding institutions.

This paper discusses the challenges faced by the design team of the under-river crossings of electric transmission feeders in New York City, a densely populated urban area. The under-river crossing of a 345 kV feeder was initially designed as Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD), but was redesigned as a utility tunnel because of site con¬straints on both sides of the river. Multiple studies addressed location, available tech-nologies and costs. Multiple soil investigation phases addressed design aspects of HDD, as well as tunneling. Contractual issues varied from a design build alternative with Geotechnical Data Report (GDR) to design tender approach with GDR & Geotechnical Baseline Report (GBR).

Since mining operations began in 1900, Government geologists and mining men have periodically recorded the presence of the minerals of mercury and antimony in the extensive gold placer deposits near Flat in the Iditarod district of the Yukon River region, Alaska. No serious effort was made to recover the cinnabar contained in the gold placer gravels, and there is no evidence that veins of cinnabar and stibnite exposed in the placer operations (as reported by the Geological Survey) were ever explored or developed. A large monzonitic intrusive, which is the dominant geologic feature of the immediate area, is believed to be the lode source of the valuable minerals in the placer deposits. In contact with the monzonite are argillite and quartzite, metamorphic products from the Cretaceous shales and sandstones.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines mine fIre diagnostic methodology to locate and monitor fIres in abandoned mines and waste banks is based on the controlled sampling of the mine atmosphere to determine changes in the concentration of hydrocarbons desorbed from heated coal. To provide background data for this methodology, a laboratory study was conducted in which samples of coal and coal waste were heated under controlled conditions. Gas samples from the combustion furnace were analyzed for standard gases CO2 and CO and for the C1 to Cs hydrocarbons. In all tests, the concentration of desorbed hydrocarbons increased during heating and decreased during cooling. A dimensionless hydrocarbon ratio, Rl, was developed as the signature for heated coal. For bituminous coals, the value of Rl increases during heating of coal samples and decreases during cooling of the same samples. Generally, Rl values of 100 or more indicate coal sample temperatures of at least 100° C. The emission of higher molecular weight hydrocarbons from anthracite samples was very low, resulting in relatively low Rl values at all temperatures. Data from fIeld projects confIrmed these results.

The Bolivar Cu-Zn skarn deposit in the Piedras Verdes mining district of Chihuahua is one of many base and precious metal deposits in the north-northwest trending Sierra Madre Belt extending across the states of Chihuahua, Durango and Sonora in northwestern Mexico. The information presented here is drawn from two papers on the Bolivar property1,4 plus new information. Historical mining and exploration for polymetallic Cu-Zn-Pb-Ag-Au deposits in the Sierra Madre Belt dates to Spanish Colonial days. Access to the Bolivar Property (Figure 1) is by paved road (approximately 305 km southwest from Chihuahua) and approximately 80 km by all-season gravel roads to the villages of Cieneguita (population ~1,000) and Piedras Verdes (population ~500) adjacent to the property. [ ] The Bolivar property comprises an old Cu-Zn producer (the Bolivar Mine), exploration concessions adjacent to the Bolivar Mine, and a new camp at the mine that supports mining, exploration and maintenance. From 1980 to 2000, former operators extracted approximately 300,000 tonnes of ore that was hand sorted to an average grade of 5-6% Cu and 25-30% Zn. From 2005-2010, Dia Bras produced from the mine just over 600,000 tonnes at an average grade of 1.7% Cu and 8.6% Zn. Dia Bras transported mineralized rock 275 km by truck and rail to its Malpaso mill, located about 30 km west of Cuauhtémoc in central Chihuahua, from 2005 until October 2011 when the new Piedras Verde mill was commissioned only 5 km from the mine. (Note: the Company cannot use the term ?ore? because it has never completed a feasibility study.)

Operations and Maintenance departments have long had an adversarial relationship. The widespread evolution and adoption of modern management techniques such as Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM) and Lean Production however has driven interest in working co-operatively to optimize overall plant performance. Mining and minerals operations have long adopted RCM in maintenance, and are now adopting Lean throughout the organization. Modern management initiatives like these explicitly call for co-operation between the two disciplines of maintenance and production and many advances have been made in the realms of people and methodology. One area that has lagged behind in supporting these developments however is information systems. Enterprise Asset Management (EAM) systems in maintenance and newer Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES) in operations have not been truly integrated in the way needed. Complicated plants, different software architectures, continually changing conditions and many variables have lead to systems problems which have contributed to the maintenance/operations divide. Master data synchronization (the ?plant tree?) and integrated reporting of real-time data with transactional data are just two of the issues that are being solved by new approaches in information technology including web services and service orientated architectures. New technologies are coming on-stream to enable the final ?bridging of the gap?.

In the past, mining has represented between 11% and 12% of the gross domestic product (GDP). In 1982, mining contributed over $150 million to the estimated $1.4 billion GDP.2 Overall economic growth for 1983 was projected at about 2%, primarily as a result of increased tourism. The inflation rate remained at or fell below the 1982 level of almost 4%. The Government continued its efforts to strengthen the industrial base by improving infrastructural systems and the establishment of a free trade zone. Laws against property ownership by foreigners or foreign-owned companies were strengthened, but the prohibition was softened to allow for close family inheritance. Otherwise, Government approval must be obtained to retain property acquired through inheritance, court order, mortgage, or other means. Special consideration was granted to foreign investors seeking to promote industries beneficial to the economy.

Over the recent years, major advances have been made in design of precast concrete segmental tunnel liner. Starting from basic, parallel sided rings, we now have state of the art, universal rings incorporating custom tapers to suit individual requirements. At planning stage, the ring diameter is normally fixed and the ring geometry is one of the first items to be assessed. Obvious factors such as TBM layout and curve radius can constrain geometry; however, there others factors that should be considered in order to optimize production. This paper takes a look at the history of the segmental rings and criteria for ring selection, including: general ring geometry;; individual segment geometry; ring taper, and ring width. This paper also explores optimization of ring with a focus on constructability.
