WITH all the advantages of handling bulk materials by means of belt conveyor also go some problems, one of the most persistent being that of cleaning. When sticky materials are being carried; the build-up of material on the return idler rolls results in difficulty of belt training. Much attention has been given to the problem of cleaning conveyor belts, and a great variety of cleaning devices have been developed. Even the best involve troublesome maintenance, and none can completely remove the fine particles imbedded in the belt cover, which cause rapid wear of the return idler rolls, and at the same time, of the belt cover as well.

Experirmental bonds of Ag-In SLID to gold, copper, nickel, Kovar, Dumet, nickel-plated molybdenum, ALL-Pt vrzetallizing on ceramic, and nickel-plated Mo-Ti metallizing on Al2O3 ceramic have been made and exalnined. Metallographic taper sections were made of all bonds for Phase identification. In addition, failuve temperatltres were determined for bonds heated undev shear load. Sowe bonds were subjected to electvon-probe microanalysis. The ternary SLID system Ag-In-Sn was similarly evaluated. Plwtonticrogaphs and electron-probe data are discussed and related to over-all phase diagrams , diffusion effects, and wetting properties of the liquid. The rates of diffusion andor compound formation of gold, silver, and copper in indium and In-Sn liquids are found to descend in that order, as measured by the relatzve thickness of phase layers in the interfaces of bonds made at 200to 400°C. It is concluded that the SLID process enables one to produce bonds which are stable at high temperatures, after having been fabricated at low temperatures, and meet most requirements for application in interconnection, silicon bonding, or hermetic sealing of electronic devices. In a previous publication by one of the authors, the theory and principle of SLID bonding in simple binary systems was discussed. SLID bonding can be defined as a joining process using a preform with a laminated structure: a low-melting material clad on a high-melting core. During the bonding cycle a metallurgical transformation occurs such that the resultant structure can withstand, without reliquefying, temperatures higher than those at which the bond was made. The phases present in the joint interface region are high-melting compounds or, if equilibrium is reached, solid solution. Properties will depend on the phases present, ultimately approaching those of the solid substrate core of the SLID preform. The high-temperature strength of bonds made in these systems was correlated to phase identification in the interfacial bond regions from metallographic cross sections and electron-probe X-ray microanalysis data. When complex electronic components are assembled, multiphase systems result at the interfaces of bond regions. In these ternary and higher-order systems very little diffusion and phase-diagram data is available with which to predict the nature of the interfacia1 region that will result from conventional fabrication processes and subsequent field use of the component. Clarke and Rhines did early work in the field using the Al-Mg-Zn system as a vehicle. Guy and co-workers studied a portion of the Cu-Zn-Ni system and some mathematical4 and general5 aspects of multiphase diffusion. irkald' and coworkerse recently studied diffusion in the Cu-Zn-Sn system. No diffusion studies have been made on ternary systems directly applicable to this investigation but some phase diagrams are available: g-u-n, u-i-n, and CU-i-n. I) DESCRIPTION AND EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The elements Au, Ag, Cu, Ni, In, and Sn are found in alloy systems commonly used in fabricating and assembling electronic components. Reference to the appropriate phase diagrams9 and the previous publication will indicate that the binary systems of any of the two low-melting elements, indium and tin, with any one of the other four higher-melting elements are capable of producing SLID bonds. It is not unreasonable to assume that any ternary or higher-order alloy system containing at least one of the elements gold, silver, copper, or nickel and one or both of the elements indium and tin could be used to produce bonds which are stable at high temperatures, after having been fabricated at low temperatures. Indeed, the liquidus contours and isothermal sections of those phase diagrams available7 do so indicate. Longwall working in Britain developed to overcome problems arising from depth of seams causing roof and ventilation difficulties. This system became very widespread particularly in the thicker seams, where faces of up to one mile in length were not uncommon. In the thinner sections, in order to remain competitive, the longwall undercutting machine was developed. Following the development of the coal cutter, every other aspect of the face operation was examined and mechanized as it became a bottleneck to output and efficiency. The face system itself was modified and workings concentrated with the same objectives.

Purpose Any study of the accident statistics of mining operations will disclose the rather startling fact that approximately 50 to 60 per cent of all fatal underground accidents in the anthracite and bituminous mines are caused by falls of roof and coal, the metal and nonmetal mines showing only a slightly smaller percentage. Advancements in safety engineering have produced definite results in the decrease of accidents due to blasting, haulage, electricity, and explosions but no such decrease is shown in those caused by falls of roof, coal, or ore. The isothermal dendritic precipitation of y in p CuZnSn is compared with the isothermal formation of Widmanstatten a plates in p CuZn. Although both precipitates are evidently bounded by semicoherent interfaces, the dendritic shape of y evolves through smooth "sinuoidal" shape perturbations, while a-p interfaces tend to be strictly planar, or rnicroscopically faceted. An estimate of the average inter-facial free energy of cube-oriented y in p through the Mullins-Sekerka analysis indicates that it is low (of the order of 50 ergs per sq cm). Interface mication is apparently controlled by volunle dij'usion, and the observed anisotropy in growth probably results from anisotropy of inter facial free energy. Studies of the grain boundary precipitation of y in p indicate that the precipitate can grow in both $ grains, but becomes unstable with respect to the grain with which it shares a mobile semicoherent interface. Facets observed at the tips of Kurdjumov-Sacks-oriented Wid-manstatten a plates correspond to variants of an irrational hahit, near (231)0. Comparison with Hu and Smith's determination of relative interfacial free energies of a-(3 boundaries suggests that this system possesses an extremely deep o cup, which results in an ej'ective low-o zone. The possible effects of such a cup on the stability of a-p interfaces are discussed, a needles, grown during rapid continuous cooling, possess microscopically smooth interfaces, and are characterized by a high degree of' damage in the region of the boundaries. These boundaries, induced to move on tempering at 200"C, become faceted as equilibrium is approached, which seems to indicate that boundary structure and mobility in this system are dependent on the local degvee of departure from equilibrium MULLINS and sekerkal have elucidated the phase boundary stabilizing effect of surface tension. a factor not taken into account in previous treatments of morphological development. Their analysis applies to the isothermal growth of a pure spherical precipitate (planar in the limit of infinite radius) in a slightly supersaturated solution, under conditions of inter-facial local equilibrium and isotropy of interfacial free energy. More recently, several other factors which might tend to stabilize planar interfaces have received attention. These are: i) interface diffusion;4"8 and ii) slow interfacial reaction. cahn7 included a slight anisotropy in interfacial free energy, and showed that it has no stabilizing effect, but forces shape perturbations to reflect the anisotropy. shewmon4 noted that dendritic morphologies are rarely observed in solid-solid systems, and, in particular, postulated that slow interfacial reaction occurs at all boundaries between proeutectoid ferrite and austenite, except those which propagate parallel to {11 l)y planes (for Kurdjumov-Sachs [K-S] related phases). Previously, Aaronson~ had proposed interfacial reaction at the broad faces of Widmanstatten plates, and expected that the lateral motion of high-mobility incoherent ledge edges would produce planar precipitates bounded by law-mobility semi-coherent interfaces. The problem of interfacial reaction during the dif-fusional formation of precipitates has often been ignored, although it is apparent that a small component of chemical reaction must exist at any moving interface." Further, all solutions of the diffusion equations for boundary conditions corresponding to isothermal growth predict infinite growth rate at time zero, so that elements of interfacial reaction would be most easily detected at early times. However, reported deviations from diffusion control are comparatively rare," and the local-equilibrium diffusion-control model appears adequate for the description of many isothermal growth systems.'2"9 Cahn14 has treated the problem of migration of an interface which is able to reach positional energy minima, and concluded that such an interface, if subjected to a high local ther-modynamic "driving force", may migrate normal to itself without the benefit of ledges. Georgia, a state seldom considered to be an important mineral producer, has one surprising feature-it is the nation's largest producer of kaolin. Kaolin is a highly important raw material in the paper, rubber, ceramic whiteware, paint and chemical industries. In 1965, more than 2.7 million tons of kaolin were produced in this state, a 150,000-ton increase over the preceding year, and production continues to climb. Strictly defined, the term "kaolin" applies to a group of hydrous aluminum silicates in which kaolinite is the predominant mineral. Kaolinite is inherently white, non-abrasive, chemically inert, and of a very fine particle size, ranging from sub-micron to 40-microns equivalent spherical diameter. An electron-micrograph of kaolinite is shown in Fig. 1. The particles finer than about 2 microns are thin, elongated plates, hexagonal in outline. The larger particles, coarser than 2 microns, are predominantly vermicular in outline with a foliated structure. Table I shows a typical chemical analysis of commercial, wet-processed kaolin compared to pure kaolinite.

THE name engineer makes a very strong appeal to one who appreciates the mechanism underlying the fabric of our civilization. Engineers are scouts of civilization. We send them ahead into the lone 'places-the wilderness, the jungles, the great watery expanses, to build the highways necessary for civilized man. The engineers must deal with Nature, with that mysterious dynamic thing we call "force," with materials. It is their function to direct the human activity necessary to coordinate these forces and material in order to make them serve the needs and aspirations of men. Because of my high conception of the engineering profession I was glad to accept the invitation to address The American Society of Mechanical Engineers to voice my understanding of the possibilities of your work as engineers of industry, and to suggest what seems to me the responsibility of the-engineer to the whole modern industrial system.

When the electrical system for a surface or open pit mine is designed, four major considerations should be satisfied in the following order: safety, reliability, flexibility, and cost. Careful planning initially will make expansion for future growth economical as well as possible without extended shutdown of operations. Electrical requirements in surface and open pit mining can be divided into three categories: main substation, plant power, and pit distribution. These systems are integral to each other, but will be dealt with separately here. 11.2-1. Main Substation. A main substation for a mining operation may vary from a 500 kva transformer supplying 480-v power to motor-driven pumps and conveyors, to a 50,000 kva substation serving a large beneficiation plant or a large strip mining operation. Regardless of size, it should be designed with the realization that a failure of the main substation will totally shut down the operation (Fig. 11.2-1.). Location of a main substation usually is a compromise between expense of running the incoming high-voltage transmission lines and the voltage drop of long secondary runs. Based on a geological survey for immediate and future areas of excavation, the main substation should be located as near to the center of load as possible. The site should be out of the blasting area, readily accessible to authorized personnel, and situated where prevailing winds will keep it free from dust or snow. DISCONNECTS AND OVERLOAD PROTECTION. The main substation should have a primary disconnecting device-either a pole top gang-operated switch and fuses of adequate interrupting capacity or, preferably, an oil circuit breaker with properly coordinated relay protection.

A definite relationship has been found between the reactivity of flowing hydrochloric acid and its shear rate in a carbonate fracture. Both flow velocity and fracture width affect the acid reaction rate. Laboratory studies were conducted on acid reactivity at different flow velocities through horizontal-linear fractures, using 15 per cent hydrochloric acid at 80' F and approximately 1,100 psi. Fracture width varied from 0.02 to 0.20 in. These data provide a new basis from which the spending time and penetration of the acid can be estimated. Equations were derived expressing the relationship between injection rate, fracture width, acid concentration, time and fracture height, for linear and radial fracture systems. Because the penetration of the acid before spending is closely related to the extent of productivity increase resulting from an acidizing treatment, these data provide a valuable insight into some of the controlling factors that must be taken into consideration during treatment preplanning. INTRODUCTION Acidizing of carbonate reservoirs to improve production characteristics has been widely practiced since 1932. Originally, it was assumed that the acid uniformly penetrated natural formation pores and flow channels, enlarging them and thereby increasing their flow capacity. Little consideration was given to the reaction rate of the acid, or how far it would penetrate away from the wellbore into the formation, before spending. It has been shown recently' that, unless fractures are present in the rock, very little penetration is attained before spending, and the benefits of the acidizing treatment are largely confined to the immediate vicinity of the well-bore. Therefore, acid treatments may be classified into two categories: (1) matrix acidizing, in which the acid flows through multiple: formation pores; and (2) fracture acidizing, in which the bulk of the acid travels through fractures in the rock, whether natural or induced. When acidizing treatments are conducted at pressures of sufficient magnitude to open and extend such fractures, it is often desirable to inject a propping agent to hold the fracture open after the treating pressure has been released, thus providing a highly conductive flow channel through the rock. In some cases where acid attack produces surface irregularities, the resulting flow passages can be sufficient to provide high conductivity without use of a propping agent. During injection, the acid dissolves the carbonate rock with which it comes in contact until it is spent. Deeper penetration of the spent acid into the formation produces no appreciable benefit (if no propping agent is used) because the unetched fracture faces will rejoin when treating pressures are released and the fracture will "heal", with negligible resultant conductivity. The spending time of the acid thus becomes important in determining how far from the wellbore the improved-conductivity zone extends. The spending time of acid after injection into carbonate rock depends on the rate at which the acid reacts with the rock. This in turn is controlled by a number of factors, as previously reported. 2-4 These include temperature, pressure, acid concentration, rock composition, injection rate and the area-volume relationship between the acid solution volume and the surface area of the formation flow channels through which it penetrates. Thus, in matrix acidizing, where an extremely large area is exposed to the acid, spending is rapid. In contrast, spending time is prolonged in open fractures, where the area-volume ratio is much lower. Thus, greatest penetration of the acid before spending will be achieved in acid-fracturing treatments where fractures are held open by hydraulic pressure. Perkins and Kern5 have presented equations for fracture-width determinations which, for hard formations such as limestone or dolomite, indicate that high injection rates and viscous fluids are required to create wide fractures. Increasing the injection rate will, in itself, produce faster reaction rates. Because this type of reaction can be considered to be first-order diffusion-controlled, '-' the rate of movement of fluid past the rock surface affects the thickness of the diffusion layer, in turn affecting the reaction rate. Staudt, et al,10 report the results of tests in which a rotating marble cylinder was immersed in acid, and the weight loss at different speeds determined. Such test conditions, however, are not truly indicative of the situation in a formation during an acid-fracturing treatment. This paper reports reaction-rate data obtained under

PRELIMINARY COMMENTS Recent years have been difficult for the mining industry, as reported in the most recently published Minerals Yearbook (Volume III), the estimated value of world crude mineral production has been generally declining since an historical peak in 1979 (16).* The costs of mineral extraction have, however, been rising rapidly. Individual project costs are, in general, exceeding the growth rate of mining companies, while operating and technical risks continue to increase (16). Risks resulting from currency flotation and political actions in the host country are also on the increase. Labor difficulties (such as those experienced by Phelps Dodge) and the Reagan Administration's recent rejection of a proposal by the International Trade Commission for higher tariffs and/or quotas on copper imports have also contributed to the mining industry's difficulties. The net result of these factors has been financial difficulties for mining companies with respect to paying for their current financial obligations as well as trouble finding new financing. It may be that one of the main factors in determining the future of the mining industry will be centered upon capital structure, i.e. how its assets are financed. Historical Perspective on Capital Structure In The Mining Industry As discussed by Isreal Borenstein in (4) and Thomas Navin in (7), mining firms typically have used a financial model based upon high financial leverage, i.e. large amounts of debt relative to equity. This has been especially true for American firms developing orebodies discovered overseas. Problems sometimes occurred for those who were forced to commit themselves to completion guarantees in order to obtain bank loans. Mines under these circumstances must be brought into operation regardless of market conditions. Politicians in overseas countries also may use the high profits required by these high risk ventures to argue for nationalization of mines. Coupled with the frequent use of high leverage, mining companies traditionally have paid out a higher percentage of earnings in the form of dividends than manufacturing firms. This is significant, in that such funds paid out in dividends are not available for other uses. Hence, a greater reliance upon debt and/or additional stock issues than would ordinarily be the case for manufacturing firms. Thomas Navin has stated in (7), that the theory behind the high dividend payout was that, "most mining investors thought of themselves as investing in a wasting asset, one that would gradually deplete over time until it ultimately became valueless." Investors, therefore, required a receipt, in the form of dividends, of a percentage of current earnings and a return on original capital. This view of reality, apparently, has not changed in some quarters, even though modern mine management ordinarily replaces depleted mines with new ones. It may be that this practice of high dividend payout coupled with relatively high financial leverage should be reexamined. Current capital structure theory could prove interesting and useful for those concerned with current conditions. Capital structure patterns and related practices in this industry are not, in many cases, congruent with those thought by some to be theoretically optimal. Prelude to Capital Structure Discussion With a few notable exceptions (such as the Guggenheims and Anaconda's chief operating,. officer in 1971) mining companies' chief executives and boards of directors have not been persons with financial backgrounds. This, one could conjecture, might have accounted for the relatively nonsophisticated nature of capital structures of mining companies. In order to appreciate the possibilities with respect to alternative influence on a firm's performance, one must be acquainted with the basics of financial theory. This paper is an attempt to familiarize the reader with (1) capital structure in general, (2) the usual components of this structure, (3) the general theory behind the use of financial leverage, and

AN entirely new type of classifier is being put on the market by The Dorr Co., following three years of development and the experimental use of thirty machines of the improvement design in various parts of the world. It is known as the Multizone classifier. Compared with the older type the lower or overflow end has been decked over and is surmounted by one or more circular overflow columns. Since 1941 not more than 15 per cent of aii wildcat wells drilled in Louisiana have been successful. This figure is not too discouraging, especially in view of the fact that during the same period approximately 80 per cent of all wells (average 701 wells per year) drilled in or adjoining producing areas were successfully completed. However, a somewhat discouraging aspect concerning Louisiana's wildcat completions is that in 1942 only 12 out of 20 fields found were oil fields; in 1943, only 13 out of 24; and in 1944, only 8 out of 21. This means that an operator has less than a 50:50 chance of finding an oil field. In other words, it is more likely that he will find a gas-condensate field. This fact has become increasingly evident as the data for each year are compiled and compared. Yet, strangely enough, operators are reluctant to accept this fact and plan accordingly. Certainly they cannot continue to search for oil fields and, for the most part, end with shut-in gas-condensate wells. The reason for shutting in is that there is no immediate and satisfactory market for all the gas being discovered. The solution, and it is a very satisfactory one, as experience in Louisiana has already demonstrated, is cycling. The advantages of this type of operation of gas-condensate fields, especially where the entire field is pooled and unitized, should be self-evident. These advantages will become increasingly more important, especially now that legislatures, regulatory bodies, royalty owners, and others are beginning to realize that "reasonable development" in a field is not indicated by the number of wells completed, but rather by the method of development. To complete a great many wells that can produce at only, partial capacity is waste. Producing hydrocarbons from these wells and not subjecting them to processing by surface operations, in order to recover all liquefiable hydrocarbons, is waste. Permitting bottom-hole pressures to drop or gas-oil ratios to increase because of excessive production is waste. Loss of leases and of wells because of inability to produce or to meet lease obligations is waste. Therefore, it is becoming increasingly apparent that a reservoir entirely pooled and unitized with a minimum number of completions, but over which there is exerted careful control so as to provide maximum recovery and the processing of all hydrocarbons brought to the surface, is the only logical and reasonable method of developing a gas-condensate field. Oil Production Twenty-one new fields, including three rediscoveries, were found during 1944. Three of these new discoveries—Delhi in northeast Louisiana, Good Hope in southeast Louisiana, and West Tepetate in southwest Louisiana—should add considerably to Louisiana's oil reserves. The other discoveries were either gas condensate or of apparently little consequence. The deposit of rock-salt which is known to exist along the eastern shore of Lake Huron, in the province of Ontario, has lately been more completely explored than before, by a boring with a diamond drill, put down by Henry Attrill, Esq., of New York City, and the results obtained are so important in every way that I make no apology for presenting them to the Institute of Mining Engineers. I may be permitted to preface an account of this remarkable exploration, and of its results, with a historical sketch of the discovery and development of this salt-region. It was in December, 1865, that a boring was begun near the town of Goderich, in the hope of finding petroleum. In this the adventurers were disappointed, but, after passing through about 800 feet of limestone, they encountered a series of variegated marls, in which, at a, depth of 964 feet from the surface, a bed of rock-salt, 30 feet in thickness, was met with in May, 1866. The boring was carried to a depth of 1010 feet, ending in hard rock, and yielded, by pumping, a very pure saturated brine when examined by me in August of the same year. In the report of the Geological Survey of Canada for 1863-66, published early in 1867, I described this salt-well, with many geological details, and gave an analysis of the brine. In the next three years a considerable number of wells was sunk in and around Goderich, and numerous trials were made in various other parts of the region. Salt was found at Kincardine, thirty miles north-northeast from Goderich, at a depth of about 900 feet, and also at Clinton, thirteen miles southeast, at 1180 feet. Records of these wells, with analyses of the brine from them, were given by myself in a subsequent report of the Geological Survey, 1866-69, published in 1870 (pp. 211-244), together with accounts of various unsuccessful borings in the neighborhood, analyses of the brines from the various wells (including one analysis by Dr. Goessmann), with many details of the salt-manufacture at Goderich, at Syracuse, New York, and at Saginaw, Michigan. MANY hundreds of publications have appeared during the past 78 years that treat the subject of hydrogen in iron and steel,105 but conclusions regarding the functions of hydrogen in causing some important defects in steel are still unsatisfactory to many; and other hydrogen-caused phenomena yet remain to be identified with this gas. The most widely discussed of these defects is hydrogen embrittlement, but the conception, perhaps the popular one, that embrittlement is due to hydride formation does not conform to the known facts.104 The true identity of hydrogen embrittlement seems instead to lie in a mosaic nature of metal crystals, which is a concept not yet accepted by most metallurgists. A study of hydrogen embrittlement therefore provides new viewpoints in regard to the crystalline substructure of steel. A second widely discussed hydrogen-caused defect is the "flake" or "shatter crack." Although it is generally agreed that the presence of hydrogen is a prerequisite for their appearance, it is also realized that internal stress plays a decisive part. The relationship of hydrogen to internal stress has not been explained very clearly; nor is it always clear what the relationship is between a "flake" and a "snowflake," or between a "fish eye" and a "shatter crack." More importantly, the relationships among hydrogen embrittlement, hydrogen-caused fissures such as "flakes" and the ultramicroscopic structure of steel have scarcely been recognized. The present investigation attempts to provide an explanation for the embrittlement of steel by hydrogen by showing cause for accepting the "block" concept of metal crystals, and then to show how the numerous hydrogen-caused defects are interrelated in the light of this concept. EVIDENCE OF SUBSTRUCTURE IN METAL CRYSTALS It appears that the concept of a crystal as an aggregate of smaller multi-atom units must be accepted in some form if the behavior of metals is to be understood. The abundant literature on the evidence of an ultramicroscopic "mosaic" structure in metals and other crystalline substances suggests that the physicist has provided the metallurgist with an invaluable new insight. The exact picturization that any one physicist provides may be open to question, but the fact that there is some such fundamental substructure seems undeniable. The present work makes no pretense of comprehensively treating the imperfection structure theories. Nor will conclusions be drawn here regarding the exact nature of the substructure of crystals. However, the acceptance of some imperfection theory of fundamental attributes seems so necessary to an understanding of the behavior of hydrogen in steel that the following brief

The following analysis was stimulated by a previous article on evaluation of the water problem at Eureka, Nev., which describes a method using formulas especially devised to calculate flow potential of extensive aquifers characterized by relatively even porosity and permeability throughout. The present discussion submits that the method was unsuitable for solving the kind of problem occurring at Eureka, where the amount of water available, rather than the flow potential, may have been the vital factor. IN an interesting article on evaluation of the water problem at Eureka, Nev.,1 W. T. Stuart describes how a difficult water problem, or one phase of it, may be evaluated by means of a small scale test. Test data are plotted by a method rendering, under certain conditions, a straight-line graph that can be projected to show how much the water table will be lowered by pumping at any specified rate for a given time. A formula is then used to determine the size of opening, or extent of workings, necessary to provide sufficient inflow to enable pumping to be maintained at that rate. At first glance this might seem the answer to a miner's prayer, but a word of caution is in order. It may not be the whole answer. Moreover, results obtained by the method described are reliable only for conditions approximating those assumed. Even where conditions do not meet this requirement, however, it may be possible to draw helpful inferences from the results, perhaps enough to facilitate another approach to evaluation of a problem. The two formulas Mr. Stuart used, the Theis formula and the one developed from it by Cooper and Jacob, were given field checks a number of years ago in valley alluvials by the Water Supply Div. of the U. S. Geological Survey and found to be reliable when the aquifer is very large in horizontal extent and sufficiently isotropic for the test well and observation wells to be in material of the same average permeability as the saturated part of the aquifer as a whole." Extensive valley alluvials, sands, and gravels can be evaluated in this way, and there are even cases in which the method could apply to porous limestones, such as flat beds of very large areal extent that have been submerged below the water table after extensive weathering. These are sometimes prolific sources of water for towns and industries. It is necessary for them to have been above the water table for some geologically long period of time in a fairly humid climate before submergence because the necessary high porosity and permeability, and large reservoir capacity, are the result of weathering, that is, of solution by the carbonic acid (H,CO3) in rainwater formed by the absorption of CO, from the air by raindrops, and this dissolving action must cease when all the H2CO3 has been consumed by re- action with the carbonate to form the more soluble bicarbonate. Consequently this weathering process is largely restricted to a zone that does not extend much below the water level, and submergence is necessary after the weathering to provide large reservoir capacity and good hydraulic continuity. On the other hand, water courses tend to form along faults and fractures in limestone, and to become enlarged by solution, well below water level when, as often happens, fresh meteoric water is circulated rapidly through them to considerable depth by hydrostatic pressure, as through an inverted syphon. Although the reservoir capacity of such water courses is relatively small they may extend far enough to tap more prolific sources. Cavities, and sometimes caves of considerable size, are found in limestones where the acid formed by the oxidation of sulphides has attacked them. This action can take place as deep below water level as surface water is carried by syphonic or artesian circulation, because the oxygen it carries in solution will not be consumed until it reacts with some reducing agent, such as a sulphide. Moreover, the formation of acid and solution of limestone in this way is not confined to the immediate vicinity of the sulphide. Oxidation of pyrite, for example, results in formation of acid in several successive stages, each taking place as more oxygen becomes available, as by the accession of fresh water into the circulation at some place beyond the sulphides. When the acid thus formed attacks the limestone, CO, is liberated and the ultimate effect of the complete oxidation of one unit of pyrite will be the removal of six times its volume of limestone as the sulphate and bicarbonate, both of which are relatively soluble. The reaction may be continued or renewed along a water course far from the site of the sulphides, where the small electric potential produced by contact with the limestone helped to start the reaction. Mr. Stuart refers2 0 caves in the old mining area in the block of Eldorado limestone southwest of the Ruby Hill fault at Eureka, Nev., and to the cavities encountered in drillholes in the downthrown block on the other side of the fault. Although he interprets these cavities as evidence that this formation was sufficiently isotropic (evenly porous and permeable) to give reliable results by the method he describes, they may, in fact, be entirely local conditions.
