MUCH attention has been directed to the effects of grain size upon the properties of alloys, but there has been scant study either of the conditions that determine the pattern and dimensions of den-drites in metal systems, or of the influence of their shape and size upon the overall properties of cast-ings. The aim of the research that is about to be described has been to investigate the effect of vari-ous factors upon the mode of formation of dendrites in alloys by measurements of the distance between adjacent dendrite arms (dendrite spacing). Early investigators, including Grignonl and Tschernoff,2 showed that a metal dendrite is com-posed of a tree-like system of stalks and branches arranged in a simple geometrical pattern. North-cott and Thomas3 demonstrated that, in the face-centered cubic solid solutions of copper-base, these stalks and side arms all lie in (100) directions in the crystal. Several investigators, including Sauveur and Chou,0 Sauveur and Reed,' and Martin and Mar-tina have reported that the addition to steel of alloy-ing elements, such as nickel, chromium, and molybdenum, not only makes the dendrites easier to reveal by etching, but makes them coarser. The latter authors8 proposed that the coarsening of the dendrites is roughly proportional to the increase in the temperature range of freezing, caused by adding the alloying elements. Sauveur and Chou6 showed, in addition, that the dendrites are coarsened by a decreased rate of cooling of the casting. Measurement of Dendrite Arm Spacing Among the physical conditions that could be ex-pected to have an influence upon the dendrite arm spacing, that appears in a cast metal, are: composi-tion, rate of freezing, crystal structure, and type of constitution. The relationships obtaining between these variables and the dendrite dimensions have been examined, in the present research, by measur- ing the arm spacing in a wide variety of alloys, listed in tables II through VI. Alloy compositions are recorded in the tables by showing the symbol of the major metal followed by the percentage and symbol of the alloying agent; thus, "Al-10Ag" is an aluminum-base alloy containing 10 pct of silver. Although none of the alloys were analyzed, an im-pression of their degree of purity may be obtained from that of their component metals given in table I. Five hundred grams of each alloy was made by melting in small clay-graphite crucibles in an elec-tric muffle furnace. After alloying the temperature was adjusted to 50" to 75°C above the liquidus and the melts were poured into cast iron molds, at room temperature, the molds having a wall thickness of 1 in. and a cavity 11/2 in. sq in cross-section. Each ingot, thus cast, was sectioned at mid-height and the sectioned surface was polished and etched for metallographic examination. Dendrite spacing meas-urements were made at three positions, namely, ad-jacent to the mold wall, midway between the wall and the center of the ingot, and at the center (desig-nated e, m, and c respectively, in the tables). A typical series of microstructures is presented in fig. 1. For each measurement, the average was taken of the dendrite spacing of several grains covering a zone about 2 mm wide. Only those grains which had a major dendrite axis nearly in the plane of polish were selected in order to eliminate corrections for orientation differences from grain to grain. Although the dendrite spacings were measured to the nearest thousandth of a millimeter, the values listed in the tables are thought to be significant only to the nearest hundredth of a millimeter. The larg-est difference in readings found, when various ob-servers rated the same specimens, was 0.012 mm; the largest difference between corresponding meas-urements upon duplicate specimens was 0.027 mm.

It is now five years since I called the attention of the Institute to the industrial importance of the coal and the iron ores of the Hocking Valley in Southeastern Ohio, and in a pamphlet on the region published soon after, in 1874, endeavored to resume the principal facts then known respecting it, including the observations of the geological survey of Ohio, made and published up to the time by Professors Andrews and Wormley, together with an estimate of the probable future of the region, and its relations to the coal and iron markets of the country. Since that time the labors of the Geological Survey have included a further study of the coal by Prof. Edward Orton, the results of which will be awaited with much interest. I may say from my knowledge of them, that while confirming the general conclusions of his predecessors, he has been enabled to add much to our knowledge as regards the correlation of the various members in different parts of the coal-field; and to show more clearly the positions and the importance of the ore-beds in the Hocking Valley region. The only ore mined in that vicinity previous to 1874, was below what is called the Great Vein or No. VI coal, and to the west of what is known as the Hocking Valley coal-field, and although experiments in a few furnaces in the State had shown that this coal could be used with advantage in iron-smelting there was not a single blast furnace within the field. My observations at that time, however, impressed me with the abundance of iron ore, not only below but above this important coal seam, and I then ventured to express the opinion that this region, from its cheap and easily mined smelting-coal, its native ores and limestones, and its geographical position and relations to the great markets of the West, and to the supply of rich iron-ores from Lake Superior, was destined at no distant time to become a great metallurgical centre, where iron could be made more cheaply than at any other equally accessible point in the country. The object of the present communication is to report progress, and to state how far my observations made in the region 1st month have justified the predictions of 1874. The five years which have elapsed have been, as all know, most unfavorable to the iron trade, and especially to new enterprises in untried regions, yet they have not passed without important industrial developments in the Hocking Valley, where not less than thirteen blast furnaces have been erected

INTRODUCTION From the lender's point of view, the greatest period of risk in a project financing occurs during the construction phase. Therefore, most projects are supported during this phase by completion guarantees supplied by some credit-worthy entity; for example, the project sponsors in the case of a joint venture, such as that of W.R. Grace, Hanna Mining, and Liberty Capital; or by a strong contract with a utility or foreign importer/investor, such as the way North American Coal Corporation has structured many of its transactions. THE PROJECT LOAN REQUEST A project financing is a more complex form of term loan than one using an ongoing corporation's balance sheet as a credit base and, therefore, a potential lender will subject the loan request to a more rigorous analysis. To support this effort, the financial institution will require a more detailed information memorandum to evaluate the credit and technical risks of a project - especially since much of the necessary information is not otherwise available. (See also Gibbs and Sroka paper above in this Chapter) A well-prepared information memorandum will impress prospective lenders with the planning ability and general competence of management. Also, the process of preparing the memorandum will help management understand the true extent of the opportunities and limitations of its venture. Appendix A outlines the topics which comprise a complete information memorandum for a loan request. Of some interest to those seeking to sell a currently-operating mining venture, a similar information memorandum should be prepared i.e., covering the same topics discussed here, for the investment banker to use with potential purchasers. For that purpose, though, one might not want to prepare quite as much detail as for a lender. Appendix B outlines the elements of a reserve evaluation and feasibility study, often called the "Bankable Document." Usually, these studies are prepared by independent engineering consultants for use by potential borrowers and sellers. (Potential purchasers will often contract for a similar study for their use in evaluating an acquisition.) ELEMENTS OF A LOAN INFORMATION MEMORANDUM 1. Outline: The information memorandum should begin with a one-page outline covering such topics as: a. The borrower's name, address, and phone number. b. Principal contact at the borrower. c. Amount of the proposed financing. d. Desired pricing and structure of the proposed financing. This should include a description of the amount and source of equity in the proposed financing. e. Use of the proceeds and timing. 2. Summary: The most important information contained in the memorandum should be summarized in two pages. Note - If the borrower is a recently-formed single-purpose company, then elements 3, 4, and 5 will apply to the guarantors of completion and to the project sponsors. 3. The Borrower: This section is a brief biography of the borrower including such topics as date and state of incorporation, founder(s), lines of business, etc. 4. Capitalization: The borrower's current debt and equity position, including leases and trade debt, with amounts, terms, names, and addresses enumerated. Equity owners, and percentage ownership, should be identified. 5. Historical Financial Statements: If available, a minimum of five year's worth of complete historical financial statements

ANTIMONY Antimony (Sb) has been used since the early Egyptian dynasties. Prior to World War I, total demand amounted to only 6000 to 7000 tons per year (tpy). Wartime uses and rapid rise of industrialization in the Northern Hemisphere nations have pushed world antimony use to the 78,000-tpy level. An overwhelming supply of low-cost antimonial resources in the Sino-Russian bloc countries has and will continue to have a major impact on availability and price to users outside the bloc. Table 14.4.1 shows trends in world production, United States production and consumption, and prices. Demand Antimony is used principally as an alloy in lead-based metals and other alloys. Pure metallic antimony usage is small and is confined to such areas as laboratory and electronic applications. Lead-antimony alloys are used in automobile storage batteries, chemical pumps, and pipes, tank linings, roofing material, and cable sheaths. The metal increases the hardness of lead, and, for such uses as foundry printing type, reduces shrinkage for casting and lowers the melting point. Antimonial oxides are used for ceramic purposes, white paint pigments, glass forming, textile finishing, fire retardants in military clothing, matches, and solder. Wartime applications include use as hardener for bullets, an element for tracer bullets, and ingredient for producing dense white smoke for visual markers. A small but rapidly growing use for antimony is for metallic compounds in semiconductors and thermoelectric devices. In the United States demand for antimony is about evenly divided between metallic end-use markets and nonmetallic markets. In metallic end uses, antimonial lead accounts for 27% of total metallic and nonmetallic use; in nonmetallic areas major uses are flame retardants (15%) which is the fastest growing market, plastics (13 % ), and ceramics and glass (11%). While antimony has advantages in most of its applications, there are uses in which other materials can be substituted, including: mercury, titanium, lead, zinc, chromium, tin, and zirconium in paints and pigments; tin in sheathings; calcium in battery plates; and bismuth in type metal. Supply Antimony is produced from both antimony ores and as a byproduct of smelting other ores. The principal ore mineral is stibnite (Sb2S3), along with its oxidized antimonial minerals and derivatives which occur in small discontinuous replacement veins or fissure vein implacements. The discovery of gold in the Toodoggone River area is credited to Charles McClair who mined placer deposits in 1925, reportedly valued at $17,500. After he and his partner went missing in 1927, efforts to relocate their workings resulted in the formation of Two Brothers Valley Gold Mines Ltd. in 1933, in which the legendary Grant McConachie (first president of CP Air) played an active role. This was the age when the prospector first utilized the airplane to reconnoitre remote areas. What greeted the observer from the air was an area rich in orange and yellow colours characteristic of gossans formed by the oxidation of sulphides. However, Samuel Black, a Hudson Bay Company fur trader, had also noted in his diary as early as 1824, the unusual and many gossanous colours in the headwaters of the Finlay River. These gossans, coupled with white limestone bluffs and the presence of placer gold, attracted the first reconnaissance of the area by Cominco in 1929. Cominco was ever active in remote areas at this time. They staked and worked several base-metal showings hosted by limestone at the margins of intrusive stocks. These early workers also obtained erratic high gold assays from chalcedony float samples found in creeks draining into the Toodoggone River. However, because the samples gave inconsistent assays, no concerted effort was made to locate their source. Except for the occasional horse-supported prospecting party of the late 1940s and early 1950s, the area did not receive much attention until 1968. Work until this time focused on the base metal lead-zinc showings which contained attractive silver credits. Gold was not an attraction because of the set price established by the US government. The late 1960s saw the northward expansion of porphyry copper exploration into the Toodoggone. A program of gossan soil sampling (gossans which had attracted the early workers) was carried out by Kennco Explorations (Western) Ltd. in 1966-1967. They analysed for base metals in the field, using a cold extraction method. The Kemess copper- gold prospect was staked as a result of anomalous copper values from this early geochemical program. In 1968, Kennco continued the program of silt traversing and field geochemical testing. The samples were further subjected to multielement analysis consisting of copper, molybdenum, lead, zinc, cobalt, nickel, and silver at Kennco's North Vancouver laboratory. Several anomalous creeks, high in combinations of copper, molybdenum, and silver, were outlined. Some initial soil grids were also established. The fall of 1969 saw the return of Kennco prospector Gordon Davies and geologist Bob Stevenson to check out a well-defined molybdenum, scattered copper and silver anomaly in soils from a grid on the Chappelle claims. The subsequent analysis of several selected quartz felsenmeer floats yielded one assay which ran in the order of 0.25 kg/t (8 oz per st) gold and 2.2 kg/t (70 oz per st) silver. Subsequent trenching on the Chappelle claims exposed the source of float in a 4- m (134) wide vein of high grade gold-silver mineralization. These results led quickly to the realization that the district had precious metal potential. Subsequent exploration in the period 1969-1974 by Kennco resulted in the discovery of most of the gold and silver occurrences on the Chappelle and Lawyers properties. Several other gold and silver occurrences were found in this district by Cordilleran, Cominco, and Sumitomo, working the district during this period. Conwest optioned the Chappelle in 1973 and explored underground by adit entry as part of a one-year program. In 1974, Du Pont of Canada Exploration Ltd. optioned the Chappelle claims and in March 1980, using reserves developed on the A vein, placed the Baker mine into production at a rate of 90.7 Vd (100 stpd). The Amethyst zone on the Lawyers property, 8 km (5 miles) north of Chappelle, was found in 1973 by Kennco using continued, persistent followup prospecting of silver silt geochemical anomalies. A silt anomaly in the order of 3.4 ppm silver occurred in a stream flowing 300 m (984 ft)

This, report represents the comments of the individual members of the A. I. M. E. Sub-committee on Physics of Mine Ventilation on the proposals of a special committee of the Institution of Mining Engineers (London). As might be expected, there is a certain diversity of opinions, for owing to the shortness of time- it was not possible for the sub-committee to get together for informal discussion. The report is presented in this form in the hope that it will bring out a full discussion by other members in the Institute. OLE SINGSTAD?, New York, N. Y.-The Atkinson formula, P =SV2 K a is quoted and it is stated that this formula is especially applicable to mine galleries but is unwieldy in application, as in many problems the value of K, S and a are assumed not to change. This is the same formula that was used during the preliminary calculations for the ventilation of the Holland Tunnel, and where the above-mentioned values were constant for a number of cases, it was a very simple matter to rewrite the equation n the form P = K1V2 and avoid the repeated use of identical figures. The Atkinson formula assumes 1. That resistance to flow is independent of the pressure. 2. Changes in volume due to change in pressure may be neglected. 3. Changes in density and viscosity may be neglected. 4. That the coefficient K is a constant. 5. That P is proportional to V2. We found, from our experiments in connection with the ventilation of the Holland Tunnel, that all the above assumptions could be safely made, with the exception of No. 3, and No. 4 at, very low velocities. In mine work, where many assumptions must necessarily be made, it would seem inconsistent to attempt to make any allowance for the other factors, which are so small that they can be determined only by the most careful experimental work. However, P does depend directly on the density of the air, and to that extent the Atkinson formula is incomplete.

FOR the past eight years No. 2 mine of the Cumberland Railway & Coal Co., Springhill, Nova Scotia-a subsidiary of the Dominion Coal Co., Ltd.-has had an unenviable reputation for bumps. As the workings extended in certain directions under a greater cover, these bumps increased in severity and it became apparent that some change in the system of extraction was necessary if the mine was to continue to operate. In September, 1924, following several fatalities resulting from bumps, the Mines Department of Nova Scotia requested from the U. S.. Bureau of Mines the services of George S. Rice, Chief Mining Engineer of the Bureau, to report on the conditions then prevalent in No. 2 mine, Springhill. This request was promptly and courteously granted. Mr. Rice made a full investigation and a comprehensive and helpful report, which is embodied in the 1924 Annual Report of the Department of Public Works and Mines, Nova Scotia. Prior to 1925, the room and pillar method wasp employed and in January of that year (there being a cessation of work from March to August due to labor troubles) longwall retreating on the west side, on a limited scale, and in a small section on the east side of the mine was started. The major portion of the east side was not operated on this system till August, 1926, as there was developed a considerable area ready for pillar extraction between an arbitrary boundary and a point up to which bumps of any consequence had not been experienced. In the interval development work for longwall retreating below the 5900-ft. level was vigorously pushed. This longwall retreating system was suggested by Mr. Rice as a possible remedy and was heartily endorsed by the company officials. This paper describes the conditions and happenings subsequent to Mr. Rice's report and more especially the results with the longwall retreating system of mining under the peculiar circumstances pertaining to mining No. 2 Seam, Springhill, at depth, and records the conclusions which experience with several severe bumps under this mode of extraction would suggest. Except where necessary to make the paper intelligible as an entity any duplication of Mr. Rice's report will be avoided.

Processes employing 'controlled at-mospheres in the heat-treatment of metals and alloys are now well established on an industrial scale, and the general principles involved and the advantages to be gained in the use of the technique have received considerable publicity over a period of years. During this time the greatest emphasis has been on the establishment of the process in industry, the main effort being devoted to development work on various types of atmospheres, their useful fields of application and the design of suitable heat-treatment furnaces in which they are to be used. The various types of controlled atmospheres are fairly well standardized, but there still remains a considerable field for the investigation of related problems, in connection with both the gas-generating equipment and the surface chemistry of the heat-treatment of metals, especially in complex controlled atmospheres. This paper describes certain investigations of this nature that were carried out in England up to 1939. The development of processes employing controlled atmospheres has been asso-ciated to a very large extent with the heat-treatment of steels, both because of the major importance of steel in industry and the many diverse and dificult prob-lems of surface chemistry involved when steels of such a wide range of composition are heated in the presence of active gases. Controlled atmospheres such as disso-ciated and burnt ammonia or charcoal gas are used in the heat-treatment of low-carbon and high-carbon steels, but from certain points of view a suitable atmosphere generated by the partial combustion of city gas is to be preferred. Both the ammonia derivatives are comparatively expensive, and even if the burnt ammonia is regenerated, thereby reducing operating costs, the capital expenditure of the gas plant may make it prohibitive for the smaller type of furnace installation. Charcoal-gas generators are not without their operating difficulties especially those associated with the quality of the charcoal, clinker formation and the removal of carbon dust from the generated gas. City gas has the advantage of being comparatively cheap and "on tap" in most if not all industrial centers. The use of raw city gas as a protective atmosphere in the heat-treatment of steels has been described,' but it presents certain difficulties because of its complex composition and its explosive nature when mixed with air. These factors, together with the tendency toward sooting at elevated temperatures, arising mainly from the hydrocarbon gases present, all militate against its use as a protective atmosphere in industrial furnaces. ElectRical prospecting by potential methods has been applied to mining problems for some years and determinations of the depth to bed rock have been made, but so far as is known it has not been used previously in the solution of civil engineering problems, such as investigating the foundations of dams. During the past winter and spring the senior author has been engaged as consulting geologist in studying the site of a large dam on the upper Connecticut River and has had the satisfaction of introducing electrical prospecting to foundation problems. The valley across which the dam is to be built is underlaid by a deeply buried preglacial gorge which is filled with glacial deposits. An extensive drilling campaign was in progress, but the work was unusually slow and expensive on account of the number of boulders in the overburden. The necessity of speeding up the work was pressing and it was decided that much of the needed information could be obtained by geophysical methods. After investigating the various methods and conferring with the company engineers and with the consulting engineer, Albert Crane, a contract was made with the Schlumberger Electrical Prospecting Methods, and an observer with apparatus was sent to the dam site the first of April, 1928. The problem was to determine the depth to rock at various points in order to prepare a contour map of the bed-rock surface and outline the buried gorge in the vicinity of the dam site. Over one hundred determinations of depth have been made and the bed-rock topography is now known in considerable detail. In addition, some information has been obtained about the nature of the overburden. The drilling has been continued; in fact, two additional drills have been put to work, and the electrical determinations have been checked at several points. At one of these the depth to rock given by the electrical work was 142 ft. and the drill found rock at 147 ft., an error of less than 4 per cent. The electrical work has also been checked by the geological study, and it has been found that when the electrical determinations are in agreement with the geological expectations they are probably reasonably accurate. To modern civilization the platinum metals are of inestimable value. Their distinctive properties, both physical and chemical, render them indispensable in an age in which the processes of the laboratory are becoming an essential part of the daily life of the world. Generally, their function, though vital to particular processes, is not spectacular, and so remains unknown to all except the operators. EARLY METHODS OF MANUFACTURE The properties of platinum were recognized as of prime importance for scientific work at. a very early date, probably between 1750 and 1760. The difficulty of making articles from it seemed almost insurmountable, because no means of attaining the temperature necessary to melt it were known at that time. It is true that solid platinum could be obtained by fusing the metal with a more volatile metal such as arsenic, which was subsequently driven off by baking, but such a method, at its best, would give only a very brittle product, which was totally unsuitable for the purposes for which it was intended. Little, if any, progress could be made until it was discovered that platinum sponge, heated to white heat and hammered in an iron or clay mold, would metallize and retain the shape of the mold. This was a process that could not be wholly satisfactory but from it developed the method of pressing the sponge in a mold and forging it at white heat into wire or sheet. At present a somewhat similar process must be used for fabricating articles of tungsten, molybdenum and other metals of high fusing point, as with these metals we face today the same problems that the scientists of the eighteenth century encountered with platinum, but possibly the next significant advance in the metallurgy of these metals will be the devising of means to melt and cast them.

The activity of sulfur was determined as a function of composition of ferrous sulfide by equilibrating with hydrogen sulfide-hydrogen gas mixtures at 670° , 800°, and 900". The present results supplement the available data over the composition range from 36.6 to 39.5 pct S. The X-ray lattice spacing measurements made are in accord with the available data and indicate that the limiting composition FeSl.008 may be taken for the iron-iron sulfide equilibrium. The growth rate of ferrous sulfide on iron was measured by reacting iron strips or blocks in hydrogen sulfide-hydrogen gas mixtures. Owing to the slow approach to equilibrium between the gas phase and the surface of the sulfide layer, The sulfidation experiments were carried out for several days. It is shown that the growth rate ullimately proceeds in accordance wilh the parabolic rate law. From the parabolic rate constants and the thermodynamic data on iron sulfide the self-difiusivity and chemical diffusivity of iron in ferrous bisulfide are evalualed. The self-diffusivity of iron thus derived zs found to increase with increasing sulfur content. THE ferrous sulfide known as "pyrrhotite" is a non-stoichiometric phase having a wide composition range from about 50 to about 58 or 60 at. pct, depending on the sulfur activity. RosenQvistl studied the thermodynamics of this phase over wide ranges of temperature and composition. Hauffe and Rahmel' and Meussner and ~irchenall~ studied the parabolic rate of sulfidation of iron in sulfur vapor. By using markers, these investigators showed that the iron cations were the predominant diffusing species in iron sulfide. This is confirmed decisively by the self-diffusivity measurements of condit4 who showed that the self-diffusivity of sulfur in ferrous sulfide is several orders of magnitude lower than the self-diffusivity of iron. Although much has been learned from these studies about the Fe-S system, further research on this subject was considered desirable for better understanding of the physical chemistry of iron sulfide. This work was confined to the study of the kinetics of sulfidation of iron in hydrogen sulfide-hydrogen gas mixtures. The results of this study are given in two consecutive parts. Part I, the present paper, is on the parabolic rate of sulfidation of iron and the diffusivity of iron in ferrous sulfide. The second paper, Part 11, is on the kinetics of the surface reaction between hydrogen sulfide and ferrous sulfide. About 1 g of iron powder or foil. contained in a small recrystallized alumina crucible ind suspended from a calibrated silica spring, was reacted with a hydrogen sulfide-hydrogen mixture of known ratio until no further change in weight was observed. %hen the gas composition was changed and the new state of equilibrium was established after several hours of reaction time. The composition of the sulfide was obtained from the initial weight of the sample and the weight after equilibration. X-Ray Studies. The lattice parameters of some of the equilibrated samples were determined using the General Electric XRD-5 diffractometer with a cobalt tube (no filter) set at 40 kv apd 10 ma; the CoK, radiation was taken as 1.79020A. Observed 220 and 311 diffraction peaks of silicon served as an internal comparison standard to correct for possible misalignment of the goniometer. The lattice parameters of the sulfide phase were calculated from the corrected Bragg angles of the 110 and 102 peaks. Rate Studies. In the initial experiments attempts were made to measure the parabolic rate of sulfidation by measuring the gain in weight of a thin iron strip, -0.05 cm thick, suspended from a silica spring in the reacting atmosphere. The preliminary experiments showed that this technique was not reliable for the measurement of the parabolic growth rate of the iron sulfide layer. In the subsequent experiments the data on growth rate were obtained by measuring, on a microscope stage, change in the thickness of the sample after reaction for a specified time in a hydrogen sulfide-hydrogen mixture of known sulfur activity. For each reaction time a new sample was used. Precision-machined iron blocks, 0.5 by 2 by 5 cu cm, were de-greased and annealed in hydrogen for several hours prior to the sulfidation rate measurements. The experiments were carried out at 670°, 800°, and 900°C in gas mixtures having the ratios, and 1.0 for periods of times from a few hours up to 8 days. Apparatus and Materials. A vertical globar tube furnace with a 3-in.-long uniform temperature zone was used. The glass tube fittings were fused on the zircon reaction tube, 1.5 in. diam. The temperature was measured with a Pt-10 pct Rh/Pt thermocouple placed in the hot zone of the furnace inside the reaction tube (an alumina thermocouple sheath was used). A separate thermocouple was used for the temperature controller which maintained the furnace temperature constant within about 2°C. Anhydrous liquid hydrogen sulfide and oxygen-free dry hydrogen from gas tanks were used in preparing the gas mixtures by the constant head capillary flow-meters. In all cases volume flow rate was 1000 cu cm per min at stp, corresponding to a linear velocity of about 6 cm per sec at 800°C; under these conditions

The ultimate objectives of comminution should be to reduce material to some specified size while producing a minimum of undersize or fines, with less power, higher throughputs, and with more compact machinery. Attempts to achieve these objectives have been only partially successful, since gains in some areas are achieved at the cost of concessions in other areas. An example of some of these trade-offs can be found in the closed circuit crushing operations of the anthracite and crushed stone industry where, in order to produce a minimum of unprofitable fines, unfavorable concessions must be made in the size of the crushing facility where 2 or more crushing stages are interphased by 2 or more screening operations. This paper discusses experiments with a new process which attempts to achieve some, if not all, of the comminution objectives in a single pass operation without undesirable concessions; or, at the very least, to achieve more than is possible with systems in use today. These objectives are sought by use of water-flushing to enhance comminution. The crushing of coal and other minerals is a mature technology that is long overdue for a careful re-examination. Crushing of coal is generally achieved through the use of rotary breakers and roll crushers. Water-flushing, as envisioned here, appears to have potential application in the following areas: 1) For primary raw coal crushing or for secondary crushing of rotary breaker products. 2) For use as a size reduction and/or concentrating step for crushing coal mine refuse from present production or from existing refuse dumps. 3) For possible future application in underground preparation interphased with continuous mining machinery. Size reduction with conventional methods is known to be an inefficient operation when the increase in surface energy of the material crushed is compared with the input energy. A simple breakdown of the energy consumption in size reduction, given by Orr, is shown in [Fig. 1]. It is believed that most of the energy supplied is lost in the form of interparticle friction.2 Hence, the removal of fines immediately after their formation or the implementation of steps to prevent their formation, based on reduced friction, will reduce the energy requirements of the communition operation.3 A detailed discussion of the mechanism of size reduction is available in other literature.3-5 Even though the closed circuit crushing operation is designed to carry the fines away from the crushing zone, it is still inadequate for instantaneous removal of fines. The present investigation advocates the use of a flowing liquid medium to remove the crushed product immediately after size reduction. Unlike the wet-grinding methods, no constraints are required for the liquid flow rate, and, also, the liquid medium can be used in primary crushers like jaw crushers, hammer mills,

THIS title introduces the subject I wish to describe to my fellow members, very few of whom, I hope, have ever had as much trouble with the smelting of ore containing much zinc, either in the lead blast furnace or the matting furnace, its circumstances have forced upon me: First, for several years in Leadville, Colo., after the sulphide ores containing zinc had been developed with greater depth and were sold to the interests with which I was connected for smelting in the blast furnace for the recovery of the lead, silver, and gold; then, in New Mexico and Arizona, where the principal source of ore supply for our custom smelter was from miners who sent most of their product in the form of concentrates, which we briquetted and smelted in the blast. furnace, producing a matte containing copper, silver, and gold, for which we were paid; together with some zinc and lead, which was penalized if in excess of a maximum base set by the refinery to which we sold our copper matte; last, but not least, my experience in Shasta county, Cal., where for the sake of recovering $13 per ton value in copper, silver, and gold, I have smelted ore containing as high as 40 per cent. zinc (the last. 18,951 tons smelted averaged 15 3/10, per cent. zinc) which we not only lost, but which it cost us money to lose.

When calculating the pressure-volume characteristics of projected mine-ventilating circuits by orthodox methods, certain basic assumptions are required in order to employ the various available empirical data. It is assumed, for example, that the mine air is an incompressible fluid subjected to isothermal flow, an assumption sufficiently accurate for practical purposes since pressure and temperature differentials are small throughout the average circuit. A more erroneous assumption, however, is that all air is accounted for as it travels throughout the mine. No attempt is usually made to evaluate stopping leakage as it occurs; instead, the air volume required at the last crosscuts is assumed to enter the mine, travel the various intake air courses intact, sweep the workings and travel out by the return air courses to the point or points of exit from the mine. Actually, there is a leakage of air from intake to return at every stopping, the quantity of this leakage depending upon the tightness of the stopping and the pressure difference across the stopping. Unfortunately, a lack of empirical data and knowledge of the condition of individual stoppings makes an exact analysis of underground stopping leakage impossible. Generally, leakage is most severe through the old stoppings outbye the circuit. These are also subjected to higher pressure differences than the newer inbye stoppings. Therefore the circuit air volume diminishes at a decreasing rate progressing from outbye to inbye the circuit. Consider a simple mine circuit consisting of one intake and one return air course, each of equal and uniform section area and interconnected at regular intervals with crosscuts equipped with stoppings. At any point X inbye the circuit the air volume q on the intake air course equals that on the return air course and decreases with diminishing rate from outbye to inbye the circuit between the limits of Q1 completely outbye and Q completely inbye. Such a volume change is represented by curve a, Fig. I, which is computed with the aid of the equation q = Q1- (Q1- Q)(X + L)N. This equation results from the general algebraic equation of form q = k, — kXN after solving for kl and k with the knowledge that completely outbye X = o and q = QL, also completely inbye X = L and q = Q. Curves a, b and c, Fig. I, show values of q as ordinates versus values of X as abscissas, for values of N equal to 0.50, 1.00 and 2.00, respectively. A. E. ROSS*—Mr. Armstrong in his paper stated that they had experienced considerable difficulty in drilling the quartz-feldspar intergrowths. The dia-mor~d loss was excessive and the diamond bits polished quite rapidly. Mr. Davidson, who presented the paper, stated that bortx stones in the range of 20 to 30 per carat had been used in the bits on this job. I would like to suggest the use of bits employing stones in the range of 60 to 100 per carat, an average of possibly 80 per carat. If these stones had been used the bits might have lasted longer and not polished so quickly. As a basis for this suggestion I would like to point out that in northern New York State we had at least two examples where bits employing stones in the range of 80 per carat had solved a difficult problem. Bits set with stones in the range of 20 to 30 per carat had been used previously and had failed. With the finer stones, the cost per foot of drilling decreased material1y. It should also be noted from a technical standpoint that the smaller stones require higher drilling speeds than the larger stones. Greater pressures are not normally necessary, and it is the higher speed which seems to be the major factor of importance. It should also be noted that the finer stones afford a greater number or cutting surfaces for the same carat weight in a bit. Then too, the smaller stones, by virtue of their size, serve as sharper cutting edges than larger stones. There is no doubt that the diamond bit employing smaller stones costs more to set than the bit using larger stones. However, with the technique developed at the shops of Sprague and Henwood, Inc., we feel that the relatively slight additional cost required to set these bits is more than paid for by the resultant lower drilling cost. We feel that the highest quality stone available is the most economical to use when hard fine grained rock is encountered. In summary, I would suggest that it might be possible to solve the problem presented in this paper by using a diamond bit employing stones at least as small as 80 per carat of the highest grade possible and by using the diamond bit at the highest speed available with modern drilling equipment. ARMSTRONG (author's reply) —It is generally agreed that the use of smaller, high-grade diamonds and of higher drilling speeds, as suggested by Mr. Ross, may be the best approach to the solution of the problem.

Although considerable information has been published concerning manganese additions to the aluminum bronzes, these data refer principally to the two-phase alloys containing 8 to II pet aluminum, with some incidental information on the single-phase alpha solid solution alloys. Straussl gives an excellent review of the literature on aluminum bronzes up to 1927 and a bulletin2 of the Copper Development Association brings the bibliography up to 1938. The most extensive work on manganese addition is that of Rosenhain and Lantsberry,3 who investigated alloys ranging up to 10 pct aluminum and up to 10 pct manganese, and presented data on the physical properties of sand-cast, chill-cast, and several wrought alloys. The greater portion of the work, however, concerns alloys ranging from 7 to 10 pct aluminum in the cast condition and sheds little light on the properties of wrought single-phase alloys. Corson4 notes that alloys containing 10 pct manganese and 4 pct aluminum are not hardenable by heat-treatment, while one with 15 pct manganese and 5 pct aluminum can be hardened, but he gives no tensile data on it. In fact, no systematic study of the properties of single-phase wrought alloys containing substantial amounts of manganese has been reported. It should also be noted that most of the investigators worked with alloys containing significant amounts of iron and silicon, and that these impurities, whether intentionally added or accrued from the raw materials used in the preparation of the alloys, may be expected to have a direct bearing on the resultant properties. In the work on alloys made with electrolytic manganese, the Bureau of Mines has undertaken an investigation of the copper-manganese-aluminum system for the purpose of establishing the constitution and properties of high-purity alloys. In a recent paper6 the authors reported a metallographic investigation of the alpha solid solution area and the adjoining fields of the copper-manganese-aluminum system up to 50 pct manganese. This study established the alpha-phase boundaries at 50" temperature levels from 400' to 850°C. It was found that the addition of manganese to copper-aluminum alloys decreases the solub%ty of aluminum in the alpha phase (Fig I), curving the boundary toward the copper-manganese base line. The greatest change occurs in the first 20 to 25 pct manganese, which decreases the solubility of aluminum to approximately 4 pct. With larger amounts of manganese the alpha boundary tends to parallel the copper-manganese binary. At 13oo'F and higher,
