A study was made of the effects of small quantities of hydrogen on the mechanical properties of colum-bium. Tensile specimens, hydrogenated to concentrations of 20 to 200 ppm, were tested at temperatures of 300°, 191°, and 77°K. Although hydrogen was found to have little effect on the strength of columbium, the ductility of Cb-H alloys was found to be quite sensitive to both hydrogen concentration and temperature. At 300°K, an abrupt loss in ductility occurred at a critical hydrogen concentration, although some ductility was observed beyond the tolerance limit. A similar result was found at a lower hydrogen concentration at 191°K. At 77°K, however, a more gradual loss in ductility with increasing hydrogen concentration was observed. Hydrogenated columbium was thus observed to undergo a ductile-brittle-ductile transition. Metallographic examination of fractured specimens revealed extensive porosity at both 77° and300°K which was a distinct function of hydrogen content. At 191°K, although some secondary cracking was noted, the amount of observed porosity was minimal. These observations are interpreted in terms of hydrogen solubility and mobility as a function of temperature and in the role of hydrogen in promoting growth of microcracks. lHE effect of hydrogen on the mechanical properties of the refractory metals is not, at present, completely understood. A number of studies have shown these materials to be susceptible to hydrogen embrittlement. Roberts and Rogers1 have found that vanadium can be embrittled by hydrogen. It was further demonstrated that fracture undergoes a ductile-brittle-ductile transition as the temperature is lowered from 150° to -196°C; i.e., there is a ductility minimum observed at a certain temperature. The ductility is increased by either raising or lowering the temperature from this point. A more complete study by Eustice and Carlson2 on vanadium containing 10 to 800 ppm placed the ductility minimum at about -100°C with variations reportedly due to hydrogen content and strain rate. Ductility minima have also been found at certain temperatures for tantalum containing 7 ppm H3 and 140 ppm H.4 At hydrogen concentrations above 270 ppm, however, the ductility return at low temperatures was considerably reduced.4 In the case of columbium, some disagreement exists in the literature. Eustice and Carlson,5 Wilcox et al.,6 and Imgram et al.4 failed to find a ductility minimum although a composition-dependent ductile-brittle transition was observed. Hydrogen concentrations in these investigations were 20 ppm,5 1 to 30 ppm,6 and 200 to 390 ppm.4 However, Wood and Daniels7 observed a rather pronounced ductility minimum at hydrogen contents ranging from 19 to 252 ppm. Those theories of hydrogen embrittlement involving the precipitation of diatomic hydrogen which have been applies to ferrous metals8-12 do not seem to be applicable to the case of columbium and other exothermic occluders. Such theories propose that extensive crack formation and propagation occurs by the precipitation and expansion of diatomic hydrogen at internal voids and microcracks. However, photomicrographs of hydrogenated columbium do not show any evidence of damage introduced by the sorption and precipitation of diatomic hydrogen; rather, at high hydrogen concentrations, a hydrogen-rich second phase is precipitated.13'14 In addition, a number of these theories require the development of high hydrogen pressures at voids in the structure.8'10'12 This does not appear to be feasible in the concentration ranges discussed in the aforementioned paragraphs. The possible interaction of atomic hydrogen with microcracks resulting from dislocation pile-ups15,16 remains in doubt since pile-ups have not been observed in bcc metals17 including columbium.18 Wood and Daniels7 have put forth the possibility that a hydride precipitation could be responsible for crack nucleation in columbium. Work by Longson19 has shown that hydrogen embrittlement of columbium parallels the bulk solubility limit; i.e., as the solubility increases, for instance with temperature, the amount of hydrogen necessary to cause embrittlement also increases. Although a hydride precipitation appears attractive as a means of nucleating microcracks in columbium, what require more intensive study are the low-temperature anomalies which have been observed, i.e., the ductile-brittle-d'ictile transition characteristics. Also, the hydrogen concentrations where embrittlement occurs are often below the bulk solubility limits determined by Albrecht et al.13,14 and Walter and Chandler.20 This work is an attempt to determine more definitively the effects of concentration and temperature on the mechanical properties of dilute Cb-H alloys. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Ultrahigh-purity columbium rods, obtained from the Wah Chang Corp., were cold-reduced by rotary swaging. A chemical analysis is given in Table I. The material was cut into cylindrical blanks 1.50 ±0.005 in. long. Individual specimens were either given a stress relief anneal at 750°C or recrystal-lized at 1200°C. Resulting microstructures were either a "bamboo" structure characteristic of a wrought material or a recrystallized structure with a grain diameter of approximately 100 n. All heat treatments were carried out in a vacuum of 10-5 Torr or less.

Sheets of the magnesium alloys AZ31B, HK31A, and ZE10A in several different tempers were tested in tension and determinations were made of the ratio of width-to-thickness strain. A marked increase in the ratio with tensile straining and a dependence upon alloy and test direction are rationalized in terms of a balance between the amounts of basal and prism-plane slip. All such variations are related, in turn, to the prevailing crystallographic texture. Fracture appearance is explained on the basis of anisotropy in plastic flow, and implications for developing texture -hardening effects in these alloys are discussed. ThE crystallographic texture or preferred orientation of a given material is determined by details of processing history. Such texture is known to influence many aspects of material behavior, in particular both the yielding and strain-hardening characteristics which are of special interest in the present work. Traditionally, the resulting plastic anisotropy has not been regarded as especially desirable. Earing in drawn sheet is perhaps the most common example of an unwanted effect of texture. However, it has also been recognized that suitable textures may be usefully employed to improve drawability,1,2 as a specific example, and generally to control yielding resistance under combined-stress loading.374 Texture would seem to be a detail of structure not yet exploited to nearly the fullest extent. A convenient basis for characterizing anisotropy in plastic behavior is the ratio of width-to-thickness strains obtained in a tension test;5&apos;6 the parameter is frequently labeled "R" and its value is revealing with respect to the nature of the prevailing texture. R gives a useful measure of a material&apos;s "thinning resistance". For an isotropic material, R = 1. With R > 1 the increased through-thickness strength in a sheet means greater resistance to yielding under biaxial tension, or "texture hardening";3&apos;4 if R < 1 the result may be a "texture softening" under the same loading conditions.4 Most R data relate to steel sheets for deep-drawing applications. Values for steel and other materials of cubic structures are not often much greater than 1 and nearly constant with strain in testing.1,2,7,8 To explore the implications of plastic anisotropy further, it was felt that experiments with much more strongly textured materials would be useful, and this led to the choice of magnesium alloys. The "ideal" sheet texture for magnesium contains the (0001) plane in the rolling plane, which ought to lead to R values approaching infinity. However, departures from the ideal texture, the possibility of slip in non-close-packed directions, and deformation by twinning would all be expected to introduce some range of R. Accordingly, studies on these materials were undertaken. EXPERIMENTAL Alloys in sheet form, Table I, were selected to obtain a variation in crystallographic texture, in the expectation that this would be reflected in differences in plastic anisotropy. Pole figures constructed by the Schulz surface-reflection technique9 were provided with the experimental materials by the Dow Metal Products Co. Profiles of pole density along great circles through the rolling (0 deg) and transverse (90 deg) directions were prepared from the pole figures and are collected in Figs. 1 and 2; considerable departure from the "ideal" (0001) alignment in the rolling plane is evident, with the largest angular spread in both directions being found in the ZEl0 alloy. Results of tensile tests on full-thickness specimens of 6-in. gage length by 1/2-in. width are given in Fig. 3 as engineering stress-strain curves* in rolling and transverse directions. All tests but one were made at a constant drive rate of 0.02 in. per min, and the final values of percent elongation at fracture, over the initial 6-in. gage length, are noted at the ends of the curves; one test on ZE10A-

THE diffusion of metal atoms into the crystal lattice of another metal and the assumption of regular positions to form a homogeneous alloy are some of the most fundamental phenomena of structural. metallurgy. The mechanism of this process has been the subject of a great deal of study from many viewpoints, but the picture is still far from complete. It is generally believed that if one metal is to diffuse into another, the first must have some solubility in the second1. This means that the solvent must be able to accommodate the stranger atoms, either on points of its own lattice or in the interstices between, without losing its own crystallographic identity. It is also a general observation that cold-working is a distinct aid in the diffusion process, causing it to take place with greater rapidity at the same temperature or with the same speed at a lower temperature. There is considerable doubt, however, as to the real significance of the deformation in its effect on the diffusion mechanism. Several factors associated with the cold-working. may be responsible for the increased diffusion rate. The plastic deformation causes a distortion of the solvent lattice, which may be an aid in the assimulation of atoms of another kind. There are many references2 in the literature that suggest that some distortion or "loosening" of the lattice is necessary for atomic migration and that diffusion cannot take place in the undis-

This work represents the first step of an attempt to test the applicability of the electron microscope to the study of subgrain structures in copper. Observations on annealed and deformed single crystals and polycrystalline samples of copper are described. IN the course of study of the structure of fine tungsten wires and tungsten rods with the electron microscope, well defined subgrain structures were observed. The size, size distribution, and orientation uniformity of the etch figures varied widely in different samples. Figs. 1 and 2, electron micrographs of a tungsten wire and of a tungsten rod, respectively, are illustrations of the difference in size and size distribution of the etch figures in different samples of the same metal. The observed differences, as pointed out in a previous paper,&apos; appeared to be related to the heat and mechanical treatments of the samples. They were also consistent with the results reported in the literature on the mosaic structure of metals.&apos; For that reason a program of research was initiated in an effort to obtain more systematic evidence of the possible relation of heat and mechanical treatments to the subgrain structure of metals as observed in the electron microscope. The purpose of this paper is to present observations made on the effect of cold work on the subgrain structure of copper. Procedure Starting Materials: Copper was the metal studied because it can be obtained in a high degree of purity, much information is available in the literature on its properties and its response to cold work and heat treatment, it shows no allotropic change, and it is sufficiently hard to be handled without great difficulty. Two groups of specimens were used: 1—single crystals cast from spectroscopically pure copper and 2—polycrystalline samples of oxygen-free high conductivity copper. Single crystals were studied because it was hoped that the elimination of a number of variables, such as grain boundaries, orientation differences, degree of purity, would simplify the problem and perhaps permit a better understanding of the phenomena that would be observed. The polycrystalline samples were designed to give a general picture of the changes considered. The single crystals were made of copper which analyzed spectroscopically to better than 99.999 pct Cu. They were cast in vacuum, by the Bridgman method, in crucibles made of graphite with a maximum ash content of 0.06 pct. The mold design is shown in Fig. 3. It permitted casting crystals of the size and shape required for the experiments, so that the danger of introducing cold work in the original samples by cutting or other machining would be eliminated. The polycrystalline samples were pieces, 3/4 in. long, cut from a rod of oxygen-free high conductivity copper, % in. in diameter. A flat surface, 1/4 in. wide, was milled along the rods, polished, and etched. The samples were then annealed in vacuum at 850°C for 1 hr. Polishing and Etching: Work previously done on tungsten,&apos; polished mechanically and etched chemically," had shown that: 1—the general appearance of the etch figures of a given sample was not altered by repeated polishings and etchings under similar conditions; 2—variations in the time of etching and the concentration of the etchant changed the definition of the etch figures, but did not alter their general size nor orientation distribution within the limits of observation. Further work confirmed the reproducibility of the subgrain structures observed in, 1—single crystals and polycrystalline samples of copper when polishing and etching were repeated under similar conditions, and 2—specimens of tungsten and polycrystalline copper when electrolytic polishing and etching were substituted for mechanical polishing and chemical etching, respectively. On the strength of these observations, it was felt that, if conditions of polishing and etching were kept constant, changes observed in the subgrain structure of a sample upon deformation and annealing would be attributable to such treatments. For that reason the conditions of polishing and etching were kept as constant as possible. The single crystals were polished electrolytically in a bath of orthophosphoric acid in water, in the ratio of 1000 g of acid of density 1.75 g per cc to 1000 cc of solution, under a potential drop of 1.6 to 1.8 V. The effect of temperature, impurities, and capillarity on the morphology of solid particles in a liquid matrix is investigated. For the NbC-liquid iron system, at least, it is found that those particles which are dissolving will assume a spherical shape; all others will take the equilibrium shape. An aniso-tropic-isotropic transition in the interfacial tension is observed at about 1725°C and is believed to be due to cooperative roughening of the interface on an atomic scale. The presence of boron as an impurity lowers the transition temperature. It is the purpose of this paper to present some observations on the shape of particles in a system consisting of solid particles of nonuniform size in a liquid matrix and to propose an explanation for these observations. Although qualitative only, these observations, which were made largely in the course of a study of particle-growth kinetics,&apos; are presented separately to draw attention to them. They reveal the effect of particle size, temperature, and surface-active impurities on particle shape in the solid NbC-liquid iron system, and are unique in demonstrating for the first time the reversible effect of temperature and impurity concentration on the anisotropy of the energy of the solid-liquid interfaces involved. Some of the changes are readily demonstrated with the few particles whose shapes can be clearly shown in a single photomicrograph, but others are more subtle, and their recognition depends upon some experience and the study of a much larger sample. For this reason, a certain amount of judgment must be acknowledged to underlie their detection, but every effort was made to maintain proper scientific objectivity in evaluating the observations. The observations will be presented first, and then an explanation rationalizing them will be offered. Brief reminders of the relevant theories will be inserted into the discussion at the appropriate points. EXPERIMENTAL The observations were made of the shape of NbC particles dispersed in liquid iron. All specimens were prepared by pressing NbC powder and car- bony1 iron powder treated according to standard powder-metallurgical procedures. Except as noted, all specimens were heated to 1900°C for 1/2 hr. In investigating the effect of temperature, specimens were quenched from 1900°C to various lower temperatures, and held long enough (48 hr) to allow shape changes to be completed. Boron, in the form of amorphous powder, and oxygen, in the form of niobium oxide powder, were added as impurities to some specimens. Nitrogen was introduced into some specimens as an impurity by heat treating the samples under a partial pressure of nitrogen gas. Effect of Temperature. It was first observed that increasing temperature had a marked effect in rounding the corners and edges of the particles. At 1900°C the particles are all very nearly spherical and remain so even when the holding time is extended to 48 hr. As can be seen from Fig. 1, there is virtually no evidence of the presence of low-index planes. At 1300°C, however, most of the particles are prismatic with very slightly rounded edges and corners, Fig. 2. (In making these shape comparisons, attention should be focused on the larger particles, even though the smaller ones would be expected to be the first to change shape, owing to the shorter diffusion distances involved. A system of partial differential equations describing miscible displacement of fluids in porous media is derived The system takes into account the influence of gravity, the spatial distribution of permeability, diffusion, and fluid viscosities and densities. A numerical procedure for approximating solutions to the differential systems has been tested for a horizontal two-dimensional geometry. In end-to-end displacements of oil with less-viscous solvents, the numerical solutions exhibited fingering qualitatively similar to that observed in laboratory models. Small random spatial variations in permeability about the mean value are sufficient to initiate fingering. Quantitative comparisons of computed results with laboratory data show good agreement. INTRODUCTION Miscible flooding of oil by solvent is receiving increasing consideration for field use.1-4 Unfortunately, such floods potentially present severe problems in loss of recovery through the by-passing of oil by expensive solvent. Consequently, their economic evaluation requires sound techniques for predicting recovery. The purposes of this work are to present a finite-difference method for calculating the multidimensional displacement of oil by solvent and to investigate the validity of the method by comparing results of calculations with data from displacements in laboratory models.5 The formulation of the method to simulate the model experiments treats a case of limited scope in the description of solvent flooding in the reservoir. The model experiments were carried out with fluids that were assumed to form an incompressible, ideal, two-component system with constant diffusivity. Establishing the validity of the method even in its present form provides a major step toward the goal of quantitatively evaluating individual solvent flooding projects. First, it demonstrates the fea- sibility of calculating the course of displacements which are dominated by an inherent macroscopic instability, i.e., viscous fingering. In addition, the method provides almost the only practical means of examining the effect of the size and extent of reservoir inhomogeneities on the development and propagation of the fingers, taking into account the important influences of diffusion and gravitational segregation. It might be inferred that such studies cannot yield results of practical value because in displacements dominated by macroscopic instability the pattern of finger development and the resulting performance should depend critically on small variations in the geometric distribution of reservoir inhomogeneities. The present method offers the capability inherent in computational techniques of predicting performance reproducibly with any arbitrary distribution of reservoir properties and, as such, provides a means of evaluating the sensitivity of behavior to uncertainties in reservoir definition and, thus, assessing the reliability of prediction of performance. THE PHYSICAL PROBLEM DATA USED FOR QUANTITATIVE TESTS OF CALCULATIONS In this work, a calculation for treating the miscible-displacement process is tested by comparing calculated results with experimental data. The experiments chosen for comparison have been described in detail,5 and the quantitative features are summarized in a later section. Briefly, oil was flooded by solvent of equal density from a thin rectangular channel in Lucite packed with uniform Ottawa sand. Under these conditions, two-dimensional geometry is considered adequate to represent the process. Inasmuch as the present work is concerned with testing of the method by comparison with specific two-dimensional data, the system of equations presented in the succeeding section will be oriented to defining the physical system specifically. For his contributions to the field of mining geology, a striking example being his brilliant inte.rpretation of the complex geologic history of the San Manuel District (Pinal County, Arizona) which resulted in the discovery of the Kalamazoo orebody, and for his lecture, "Copper Resources in 1970." On a low desert ridge six miles south of Cairo lie the remains of the world&apos;s earliest known mining town, Maadi of predynastic Egypt. Copper artifacts, including ingots and an ax head which was spoiled in casting, indicate that copper ore was smelted in Maadi, and radiocarbon dating has placed the activity at least as early as 3300 B.C. This is the oldest documented date for the use of smelted copper, the first industrial metal used by man. Copper was mined and smelted almost as early in Asia Minor and on the island of Cyprus, but the greatest development of the budding copper industry was in Egypt, where specific historical records show that about 10,000 tons of copper metal were produced in the period from 1850-1580 B.C. Contrast this production of 35 tons per year with the present world production of about 7 million tpy. Evolution of the Copper Industry The copper ore mined by the ancients was high grade, and the copper produced was expensive. The copper industry began with narrow high-grade veins, but has evolved to the point where massive earth-moving equipment can be operated in huge, low-grade open pits. Indian pits dug before 3000 B.C. in the Lake Superior district were in ore which averaged 15% Cu. His- torical research done by Arthur Brant has shown that copper cost in the Middle East in 1840 B.C. in terms of 1970 labor dollars was about $25 per lb. The copper mined in northern Europe in 1540 in the time of Georgius Agricola averaged about 8% Cu, and the cost in 1970 labor dollars was about $10 per lb. Average ore grade had dropped to about 6% Cu in 1890, and the cost of copper in the U.S. in 1970 dollars was about 45¢ per lb. Butte, Mont., was a good example of the efficiently operated vein mines of this time. In 1906, Daniel Jackling made a dramatic entrance into the copper scene with the Bingham Canyon open-pit copper mine and proved that more profit was possible mining 2% porphyry copper ore on a

Using residual activity technique, the diffusion of palladium, silver, cadmium, indium, and tin in alunzinum has been studied in the temperature range of 400" to 630°C. The diffusivities (in units of square centimeters per second) have been expressed as: IMPURITY diffusion in aluminum,1-9 silverand lead5 for cases of low solid solubility of the impurity in the host metal has yielded frequency factors in the range of l0-6 to l0-9 sq cm per sec whereas the activation energy is practically half the self-diffusion activation energy value. From the observed values of frequency factor, activation energy, and entropy of activation, it has been suggested&apos; that these solutes are not diffusing by vacancy or interstitial mechanisms but by a mechanism which should be consistent with such low values of the diffusion parameters (Do and Q). However in spite of extensive work on these types of systems, the mechanism of diffusion is still not well understood. The present investigation on the diffusion of palladium, silver, cadmium, indium, and tin in aluminum has been carried out to throw further light on the diffusion mechanism in systems, where the solid solubility is very low (except for the case of silver). The results are discussed on the basis of solid solubility and the structural changes involved owing to the presence of the solutes in aluminum solid solution. An attempt has also been made to apply the existing theories of charge5-8 and size8 difference between the solute and the solvent. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Specimens (1/2 in. diam by 3/8 in. high) were machined out of pure aluminum (99.995 wt pct) rod obtained from Johnson Mattheys. They were sealed under vacuum in quartz tubes and annealed at 620° C for several hours; the grains thus developed were sufficiently large to eliminate the possibility of diffusion along the grain boundaries. The flat ends were prepared carefully after polishing as described previously,10 Radioactive nitrates of cadmium, indium, and tin and chloride of palladium containing, respectively, cd115, 1n114, sn113, and pd103 were dissolved in distilled water and mixed with 30 pct acetone. By means of a micropipet a drop of this solution was placed on a smoothly polished and lightly etched surface of the specimen. Due care was taken to see that the solution spread uniformly on the surface of specimen without trickling down its sides. Radioactive silver was elec-trodeposited using a AgCN-KCN bath. The amount of sample deposited in all the cases was not more than 0.1 µ thick. The samples were then sealed in quartz tubes in vacuum. The cadmium samples were sealed in a purified argon atmosphere to avoid evaporation. The samples were then diffusion-annealed. The temperature of annealing varied between 400° and 630°C and was controlled to ±5°C. On heating to -400°C,the deposits of cadmium, indium, and tin, which were of the order of 0.1 p in thickness, were converted to their respective oxides. The contribution of oxygen present in the lattice of aluminum due to these oxides has been calculated and found to be less than 10 ppm in all cases. Oxide method has already been used by other workers11&apos;12 in diffusion studies without any controversy on the issue. However, in some of these investigations, metallic deposition was also tried. The diffusivities calculated from these measurements were found to agree very well with the diffusivities obtained by using the oxide method. Thus it is assumed that the measured diffusivities represent true diffusion coefficients. Since palladous chloride decomposes at about 500°C, the deposited samples which were to be diffusion-annealed below 500°C were heated in vacuum for a very short time at 500°C to allow the decomposition of palladous chloride to palladium metal. Time taken in decomposition of nitrates to oxides and chloride to metal was negligibly small as compared to the period of the diffusion anneals. The residual activity technique13 was used to study the diffusion profiles where thin layers from the specimen surface were removed by grinding it parallel to a flat surface on a 600-grade carborundum paper. The specimen was washed, dried, and weighed, the differ -ence of the weight being the measure of the thickness of the layer removed. After each such abrasion and weighing, the total residual activity on the surface of the specimens was measured by counting 0.656, 0.94,

The bituminous coal industry faces a real problem, if it desires to retain the position in the power-generation field to which it is economically entitled. More power is probably produced today for electrical energy, for steam-driven and steam-heating industries and processes, for transportation by rail, water, highway and air, collectively, than ever before, and yet the total bituminous coal production has decreased about 38 per cent, from 575,000,000 tons in 1926 to 357,500,000 tons in 1934. Oil-burning steam-driven locomotivcs are replacing coal in some places, where railroads operating high-speed passenger trains are willing, temporarily at least, to pay a premium for the fuel that is low in ash and produces less smoke and practically no cinders. In the navy and ocean-going passenger ships, oil is so firmly established, and has such definite advantages over coal as formerly fired, in steaming radius, in ease of bunkering, cleanliness, and reduction in firing labor, that very outstanding developments in the handling and burning of coal will be rcquired in order to replace oil. For freighters on the Great Lakes, coal is the logical fuel, but there is great and immediate need of radical improvements in its use, else that market also may be lessened. It is not within the scope of this paper to discuss in detail bituminous coal for either locomotive or marine use, but, rather, generation of power in stationary plants, consisting of electrical generating stations and that very large group of miscellaneous industrial plants, such as paper, rubber, textile, steel and other industries that use electrical, mechanical, and steam power, derived from either hydro or some form of fuel.

The bituminous coal industry faces a real problem, if it desires to retain the position in the power-generation field to which it is economically entitled. More power is probably produced today for electrical energy, for steam-driven and steam-heating industries and processes, for transportation by rail, water, highway and air, collectively, than ever before, and yet the total bituminous coal production has decreased about 38 per cent, from 575,000,000 tons in 1926 to 357,500,000 tons in 1934. The surface charge, electrokinetic potential and surface conductance were studied for silica, alumina and rutile as the functions of PH and concentration of 1-1 electrolyte solutions. The adsorption potentials of potential-determining and specifically adsorbed ions were calculated from isoelectric and zero charge points on the basis of Stern equation and thermodynamic description. From surface conductance and charge data the mean ionic mobilities in double layer were estimated. The results give some information about the real structure of oxide-electrolyte interface and gel-layer concept.

By use of the frequency response method with a radioactive tracer, it was possible to determine fluid dispersion and distribution in a natural consolidated and an unconsolidated medium. Measurements were made in a linear flow system at oleic saturations of 69 per cent in the consolidated medium, and 100 per cent in both media. Dispersion and distribution were obtained by measuring the amplitude attenuation and the phase velocity of sinusoidal waves with a dual monitor apparatus. The gamma ray emissions permitted in situ measurements at any distance along the porous samples. One result of importance was that the effective diffusivity increased as the wave length increased. As a consequence, a dispersion coefficient appropriate for the injection of large slugs might exceed the value measured by use of small slugs. Since flow models based solely on fluid velocity and an effective diffusivity coefficient imply that the diffusivity should be independent of frequency, such representations were not adequate for the data of this study. A comparison was made with a capacitance model of porous media with deadend PVs, but even this model was not completely adequate. By using attenuation and phase velocity data, fluid dispersion can be predicted without postulating a differential equation satisfied by the tracer concentration, thereby eliminating the need of a complicated model to represent dispersion. INTRODUCTION The flow of similar miscible fluids through a porous medium can be fairly adequately described by two parameters: the average fluid velocity and the effective diffusivity.1-3 It has been pointed out recently, however, that significant discrepancies exist between this representation and the experimental data.4-7 An improved agreement can be obtained by introducing additional parameters based on the concept of dead-end pores. The purpose of the present investigation was to find out whether the frequency response method could be used to measure the relevant parameters. The method was used in the following form. A stream of fluid was flowed at a constant rate through a sample of porous material and the concentration of a radioactive tracer in the fluid was varied sinusoidally at a fixed frequency. The effects of flow through a porous medium are a decrease in the amplitude of the concentration wave and an increase in the velocity of the peaks of the waves above the average velocity. Attenuation and phase veIocity of the waves were measured as a function of frequency and fluid velocity. The simple two-parameter model implies that the diffusivity should be independent of frequency. Data reported in this paper show that the diffusivity decreases as the frequency increases. Hence, as shown also by many others, the two-parameter model is not completely adequate. Coats and Smith 5 used two additional parameters in their model: the volume of the dead-end pores and the rate of mass transfer between dead-end pores and the flowing stream. Their capacitance model of a porous medium containing some stagnant fluid, to which transfer occurs by molecular diffusion, did not explain the dispersion results of either the present study or of theirs. Instead, the capacitance effect can be better described as the result of extreme velocity variations within the pores of the medium, with transfer between the velocity zones by convection. EXPERIMENTAL PREPARATION OF POROUS MEDIA Data reported here were obtained with a natural Berea sandstone, and with two packings of 20/25 mesh sand. An investigation of the Cr-Ni system has revealed that there exists a eutectoid transformation at about 1180°C. &apos;The transformation in chromium implied by the eutectoid reaction was detected at about 100°C below its melting point. Associated with the eutectoid transformation, a metastable transition structure has been found. THE Cr-Ni phase diagram is shown in current literature to be a simple eutectic system in which the high chromium end of the diagram is incompletely determined, Fig. 1. The last investigation of this system was undertaken in 1936.&apos; Because of limitations in metal purity, especially of chromium, and temperature measuring techniques, the diagram should be accepted with some reservations, as was indicated by Hansen.V or examwle.-, the wresence of the compound Cr²Ni, with a tetragonal structure," remains unverified and incompatible with the simple eutectic diagram. The work reported here began because of discrepancies that appeared in experimental studies in the binary alloys Cr-Ni and in the ternary system Cr-Mo-Ni. The existing binary Cr-Ni diagram failed to provide a complete explanation of observations made by microscope, X-ray, and thermal analyses. Experimental Methods The materials employed were of a higher degree of purity than were available to previous investigators. The Mond nickel used had a nominal purity of 99.87 pct, while the electrolytic chromium analyzed 99.03 pct with the major impurity being 0.5 to 0.7 pct oxygen with some iron. All alloys were melted in a vacuum furnace to remove dissolved gases, sufficient carbon was added to the charge to combine with all the oxygen as CO. Final analysis determined the carbon as about 0.02 pct and the oxygen around 0.06 pct or slightly more. Stabilized zirconia crucibles and thermocouple protection tips were used throughout and contributed no detectable impurity to the melts, as long as the oxygen in the chromium was kept low. Heats averaged about 250 g, which permitted about 2 in. of the thermocouple protection tips to be submerged. The temperature drop across the thermocouple protection tip was determined to be about 3°C, a minor source of error. The alloys, after removal from the vacuum furnace, were placed in a furnace operating in a purified argon atmosphere for the thermal analyses. An- nealed wolfram-molybdenum thermocouples provided the primary means of temperature determination, though a Pt-Pt-10 pct Rh couple was employed for a check when possible. A sensitive, high-speed Leeds and Northrup Speedomax recording potentiometer indicated the thermocouple output. X-ray diffraction patterns were obtained primarily on a Norelco unit, which permitted diffraction angles only up to 45" (28 = 90"). In general, either rotated or stationary solid samples were used, because it later evolved that many samples were susceptible to transformation resulting from the cold working involved in pulverizing. It was also noted that rotating a sample sometimes suppressed weak lines, so, usually, samples were not rotated. Later a high temperature camera was adapted for use at temperatures up to 1400 °C on the Norelco unit utilizing both solid and powdered samples. To the successful functioning of the geomagnetic method of exploration in engineering and geological practice there are two prime prerequisites : the measurability and the interpretability of significant magnetic anomalies. A magnetic anomaly may be defined as a permanent distortion of the earth&apos;s magnetic field, in order to distinguish it frog the distortions, either cyclic or irregular, which vary with time. So far as known, time fluctations have no directly assignable geologic significance in terms of rock formations, while anomalies may be considered to be directly caused by the difference in the magnetic properties within and between the formations of the substances that make up the earth&apos;s outer shell. As is effectively pointed out by L. B. Slichter,1 the effects which these differences produce on the magnetic field may be extremely minute or extremely great, depending upon the magnetic properties of the formations. Thus the actual anomalies may range from the infinitesimal to a magnitude considerably greater than that of the earth&apos;s field. The geomagnetic method of exploration has shared in the deluge of experimental effort which has lately swept geophysical prospecting to its present important place in engineering and geologic practice. But to date more of this effort has been expended upon the measurability of anomalies than upon their interpretability. The tendency has been to strive for the development of instruments and especially field techniques capable of measuring minute anomalies with a precision far beyond that for which there can be any hope of adequate interpretation other than as interesting phenomena having numerous possible causes. Such efforts, of course, are highly commendable in the field of so-called pure science, which includes the accumulation of undigested detailed observations and admits of interpretation by multiple hypotheses, but in engineering practice the factor of economy must enter. Those instruments and techniques are most desirable which can most rapidly measure the interpretable range of anomalies with the precision necessary

The North Texas district, as herein defined, includes the counties of Archer, Baylor, Clay, Cooke, Foard, Hardeman, Knox, Montague, Wichita, and Wil-barger. This area covers generally the crest and south flank of a system of buried mountains known as the Red River uplift. The oil and gas accumulations along this feature are in traps, which, although localized by structures incident to the regional uplift, are usually modified by stratigraphic changes in the sediments. Excepting the fields in southeastern Baylor, southern Archer, and southwestern Clay Counties, all the fields within the district are on this Red River uplift. These exceptions, which have the same type of oil and gas accumulation as the other fields, are on the extreme north end of the Bend arch, which is a broad anticline plunging northward from the Llano uplift in central Texas to Archer County. The larger part of past oil and gas production has come from Pennsylvanian strata, with less important amounts from the Permian, and minor but increasingly important quantities from the Ordovician. Developments during 1940 The encouraging outcome of exploration and development in Montague and Cooke Counties and generally greater activity throughout the district resulted in the drilling of some 1700 wells during 1940, about 350 more wells than were drilled in 1939. Approximately 1250 of these tests were completed as oil wells. Production likewise increased during I940 to the extent of 8 million barrels more than the 25 1/2 million barrels produced in 1939. In spite of this large increase in production, known oil reserves again increased substantially. As is usually characteristic of this district, the new reserves were from a large number of fields, none of which were of such magnitude as to be important to the oil industry. Nevertheless, the Fargo field, Wilbarger County, deserves mention as one of the more important discoveries in this district during 1940. Following seismic surveys, the hmerada Petroleum Corporation located its No. I Goodpasture in sec. 35, block IS, H. and T. C. R. R. Co. survey, and drilled it to a total depth of 6717 ft. This well was completed in July 1940 through perforations in the casing from a pay between 3230 and 3252 ft. for an initial production of 241.5 bbl. on an 8-hr. pumping test. Other potential producing horizons were found in the Pennsyl-vanian at depths of 3960 to 3995 ft., 4208 to 11.234 ft., 4407 to 4422 ft., and in the Ordovician at 6300 ft. Wells completed to date in the several Pennsylvanian horizons have an average daily potential of 600 bbl. of oil. Although no wells have yet been completed in the Ellenburger dolomite (Ordovician), the discovery well swabbed I5 bbl. per hour from this formation before plugging back for completion in an upper horizon.

By means of mathematical solutions to the appropriate diffusion equations, we describe the kinetics of the thermal diffusion of hydrogen in Zircaloy-2 for the various temperatures and concentrations encountered in a heavy water moderated reactor. When the hydrogen concentration is below terminal solid solubility only the a Phase is present. Redistributions are then described in terms of the characteristic functions of the difhsion equation. For higher concentrations both the a and 6 phases are present. We assume the two phases to be always in equilibrium. For moderately small hydrogen concentrations exact solutions of the two-phase equation approach the the approximate solutions derived by Sawatzky and for all concentrations the exact solutions exhibit the qualitative features of his result: the two-phase concentration increases with time, everywhere; in the absence of a hydrogen current at the hot end of the sample an a-phase region always exists there; the interface of the a + 6 , a-phase boundary moves toward the cold md of the sample and the hydrogen concentration is discontinuous at the interface. Simultaneous solulions of the a and a + 6 hydrogen distributims and of the concomitant interface motion are obtained and compared to the observations of Sawatzky and Markowitz. The kinetics of the hydrogen diffusion process are shown to lead to m apparent heat of transport of the a phase which is lower than the actual value (even for samples with long anneals) thus resolving at least partially the disparity between experimental measurements of this quantity. A number of recent papers1"4 have reported measurements on the diffusion and redistribution of hydrogen in Zircaloy-2 under temperature and concentration gradients. These studies were instigated by problems arising from increasing use of Zircaloy-2 as a fuel element cladding material in pressurized-water power-reactors. The Zircaloy-2 picks up hydrogen during the operation of the reactor: the consequent precipitation of zirconium hydride in the Zircaloy-2 has pronounced effects on its mechanical properties. The Purpose of the present Paper is to describe the kinetics of the thermal diffusion of hydrogen in Zircaloy-2 for the various hydrogen concentrations and temperatures likely to be encountered in reactors. When the hydrogen in the Zircaloy-2 is entirely in the solid solution phase (a phase), the differential equation for thermal diffusion is well known and the redistribution can be described by standard mathematical methods some of which are given in Section 11 below. The treatment of the a + 6 (hydride) region differs from the earlier treatment of sawatzky3 by taking into account several modifications of the two-phase diffusion equations as suggested to us by Markowitz4 and Kidson.5 Even with the modifications the results obtained in our more complete treatment are substantially the same as those found by Sawatzky. As we show, the difference between the results of sawatzky3 and kIarkowitz4 is largely due to the difference in the geometry of their experiments. In the next section we derive the modified two-phase equation for arbitrary geometry. The exact solution of this equation is given in Section III for linear and cylindrical geometry. It is shown that Sawatzky&apos;s approximate solution is quite accurate for almost all the temperatures and hydrogen concentrations which are actually encountered. In Sawatzky&apos;s approximate theory the hydrogen concentration everywhere in the two-phase region increases continuously. As his paper pointed out, this result, together with hydrogen conservation, implies that in a sample with no hydrogen current flowing into the hot end a two-phase region is always accompanied by a single-phase region at the hot end of the sample. The net hydrogen gain in the two-phase region is supplied by the decrease of hydrogen in the single-phase region and by the movement of the (a, a + 6) boundary toward the cold end of the sample. Hydrogen conservation at the (a, a + 6) boundary leads to a discontinuity in the concentration and its derivative there. In Section IV it is shown how these qualitative features of the thermal diffusion kinetics arise from the simultaneous solution of the a-phase differential equation and a + 6 phase equation. Methods derived by us previously for the solution of the redistribution in both phases and the accompanying motion of the boundary are used to obtain approximate solutions valid for large times. The solutions account well for the observed redistributions of Sawatzky and Markowitz. It is shown how the continuing motion of the (a, a + 6) boundary leads to measured values of the heat of transport lower than the actual value, even for specimens with relatively long anneals.

The primary purpose of this presentation is to analyze the strategies available to an operator using either stripping or stripping and subsequent punch mining on a given coal property. The initial concern is the formulation of a mathematical model, which allows an operator to determine and utilize the particular highwall height, which will maximize : (1) Total profit or (2) Profit per unit of operating time. The analysis centers on the relative costs and recoveries involved in a typical coal seam amenable to stripping, augering, and punch mining. The model defines the point to which the high-recovery stripping operation with increasing overburden removal and reclamation costs should proceed before the low-recovery augering and punch mining methods are employed so that the desired objective is achieved. Examples are presented, which exhibit the use of the model on typical operations. Present mining methods as practiced in the Eastern United States are examined in the light of the results. Recommendations for improving present strategies are made and the resulting economic ramifications are analyzed. Particular attention is given to the stripping ratios presently used and recommendations for improving present mining practice are presented. Implications of these recommendations to the design of strip mining equipment are discussed.
