Within the mining industry there is a growing trend of placing inexperienced technical people into positions of responsibility beyond their readiness. Their responsibilities often include providing the fundamental basis for decision-making: the resource model or even the daily grade control estimates. Whilst software continues to make the processes more accessible, the thinking and rationale for selecting parameters still requires control rather than auto-piloting. Operators run these systems in virtual isolation, and have limited immediate access to experts. Beyond the stress of the professional burden are the increased risks to the mining operations and overall project success.While many experienced experts recall being thrown in the deep end, the relative isolation from experts coupled with the gravity of professional burden before readiness, is less familiar. Many recall in intimate detail the experts who gave them direction, assisted them along the way and even helped them claw out of inadvertent mistakes. Experienced professionals all have a responsibility to enable capability across the generations, to ease the burden and to mitigate the risks.This paper provides an outline of how mentoring as an on-the-job professional development process can be structured to more fully enable success of a mentoring program. Most 3D geological modelling tools were designed for the needs of the oil industry or detailed mine planning and are not suited to the variety of situations encountered in other application domains. Moreover, the usual modelling tools are not able to quantify the uncertainty of the geometric models generated. The potential field method was designed to build 3D geological models from data available in geology and mineral exploration, namely the geological map and a digital terrain model (DTM), structural data, borehole data and interpretations of the geologist. This method considers a geological interface as a particular isosurface of a scalar field defined in the 3D space, called a potential field. The interpolation of that field, based on cokriging, provides surfaces that honour all the data. The 3D model and its parts are always consistent with the observations. New developments allow the covariance of the potential field to be identified from the structural data. This makes it possible to associate sensible cokriging standard deviations to the potential field estimates and to express the uncertainty of the geometric model. It also, for the first time, gives a statistically optimal, geologically sound way of interpolating geology, other than directly joining the dots as you do with CAD. Practical implementation issues for producing 3D geological models are presented: how to handle faults, how to honour borehole ends, how to take relationships between several interfaces into account, how to model thin beds over many kilometres, how to optimise lithological properties and how to integrate gravimetric and magnetic data. We describe all geology surfaces and volumes using implicit functions. These are then rendered onto the required sections, plans, etc. The estimation of orebody grades and tonnes, using an unbiased and optimal geostatistical technique, makes use of the stratigraphically bound 3D geology model. An application to the geological modelling of the Hamersley iron ore district, Australia, is briefly presented.

The GPS and information technology industries are now applying considerable development effort to what is being termed machine control and machine information systems, in particular focusing on the industries the of mining construction and agriculture. GPS based systems are demonstrably finding common acceptance and adding commercial value to many machine applications in industry. This has been the first step in the evolution of the information age that is now reforming mining practices. Adding the technologies of wireless data communication, modem computer databases, and networked PC's mining is on the verge of a new era in overall process management. This paper is a general discussion of what the information age means to miners and a general description of new mining operation technologies available to day from the Caterpillar technology alliance.

With the launch of Immersive Technologies' next generation of Advanced Equipment Simulators for the mining industry, correlating and influencing safety, productivity and maintenance with operator competency improvements is now made even more effective. In early 2008, Immersive assembled a project team to investigate the potential linkages between operator competency and performance. Advanced Equipment Simulator Users with a range of sophistication were interviewed and consulted. The result was new and enhanced 'value realisation' programs to directly assist mine sites to deliver the expected return on investment (ROI) from simulators and operator competency development. In just over one year, 29 mine sites around the world have benefited from 34 completed programs. Case studies have been compiled to demonstrate the impact of the implementation of this approach, including at the following operations: Anglo Coal - Callide (Australia), Freeport McMoRAN - Grasburg (Indonesia), Equinox Minerals - Lumwana (Zambia), Peabody Energy - Cabllo (USA), and Xstrata - Lomas Bayas (Chile). Significant performance improvements have been achieved including: reductions of 47 per cent in gear shifting and 37 per cent in over speed errors, improvements of 68 per cent in park break errors and 12 per cent in spotting time, and increase of 54 per cent in passing emergency fire handling competency tests. This presentation draws on these case studies to clearly demonstrate the linkage between improved operator competency through the implementation of training programs tailored around Advanced Equipment Simulators and production performace measured by a range of standard metrics at mines around the world.

A Loss of Strength of Gold Sulfide Concentrate Before Grinding and Cyanidation Using Magnetic Impulse Treatment Gold recovery from sulfide concentrates is going with cyanidation usually. The fine grinding to 95 per cent -0.020 mm is required for refractory concentrates, in which gold encapsulated by sulfides. According energy consumption is 10 and more kW h/ton. At this paper we suggested to use magnetic-impulse treatment with small energy consumption 0.1-0.2 kW h/ton for loss of sulfide strength before grinding and cyanidation. The object of studies was the gold-pyrite flotation concentrate which was produced from ores at the Kumtor Mine, Kyrgyzstan. The concentrate composition, physic-mechanical properties and loss of strength mechanism were studied there. The tested concentrate assayed, per cent: 62.5 pyrite, 10 feldspar, 10 mica, 5 quarts, 5 carbonates, 4 haematite and another. Haematite has intimate intergrowth with pyrite ? partially with quarts. The magnetic susceptibility of haematite and less pyrite causes in these grains and mineral complex the effect of magneticstriction. As a result numbers of deformations are increased and minerals and gold are also exposed. Lateral and longitudinal strains in the minerals by magneticstriction were calculated in this work. By quantitative analysis of pyrite mono fractions were showed next micro impurities: alumina, arsenic, nickel and others elements. These micro impurities are generated a charged dislocation, cracks and micro cracks. The inter-granular links at a boundary of haematite-pyrite, pyrite-quarts, haematite-quarts have disintegrated. The dislocation is depended from mineral modulus elasticity. It was determined an indicator of mineral electro-mechanic sensitivity which characterises a conversion of electro-magnetic energy to mechanic energy. Pyrite has most dielectric constant and electro-mechanic sensitivity as haematite and quarts. The dislocations in pyrite are account for clacks and a loss of mineral strength. Size analysis of the flotation concentrate after magnetic-impulse treatment is shown the increasing the content of thin fractions by comparison no treated concentrate. Magnetic-impulse treatment has increased the effect of the next fine grinding too. The electronic microscopy has confirmed a loss of strength of gold sulfide concentrate. The gold recovery by cyanidation increased too after preliminary magnetic-impulse treatment of concentrate by laboratory tests. The magnetic-impulse concentrate studies at the Kumtor plant have showed that a recovery gold increase in the processing of cyanidation. The consumption of energy also reduced.

A key issue in maintaining the mining industryÆs social contract to access community-owned resources, is the need to be able to demonstrate professional management of resource extraction and the risk associated with mining hazards. Significant failures such as disease relating to coal dust and asbestos and mine disasters such as Moura, Appin and Gretley have resulted in judicial and legislative interventions that respond to the community outcry but do not necessarily effectively manage the longer term risk in a sector driven by new technology. With the implementation of recent amendments to the Queensland Professional Engineers Act, senior engineers in all industries including the mining industry are required to be registered and to demonstrate that they have æmaintained competency in the practice of engineering in the area of engineering for which the (engineer) is ... registeredÆ. This may be facilitated through a report produced by an æAssessing EntityÆ. These entities are approved by the Minister on advice from the Board of Professional Engineers, Queensland. Engineers Australia and The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (The AusIMM) are the two professional bodies approved as æassessing entitiesÆ charged with facilitating successful implementation of the process established by the legislation. The scope of the legislation covers engineering enterprises in Queensland and engineering activities elsewhere that may have been designed in Queensland. There is currently a challenge to determine what the necessary health and safety competencies for the mining industry are and how the maintenance of these competencies will be assessed. The different approaches taken by the two assessing entities are compared and contrasted. At the legislative level, establishing an obligation to assess professional competency is simple, but at the level of the profession, it is new ground that warrants a substantial research and development input. The challenge is to develop criteria by which the quality of such system can be assessed. The comparison is made by considering such issues as equity, effectiveness, efficiency, objectiveness and transparency. These five indicators are considered in terms of how they are applied in other sectors and how they might be applied in the mining sector.

A 3-D computerised model of the southern part of Greymouth Coal Limited's Coal Mining Licence area has recently been completed. This model, and associated 3-D CAD tools, has/is being used to optimise drillhole spacing during exploratory data collection and as a visualisation and interpretation aid. This model will also provide the basis for future mine planning, with the emphasis on an optimal mine outline to maximise safety and profitable coal extraction. Previous use of computer techniques was restricted to drillhole database entry, storage and log production. Recently a 3-D geological/structural model was created for the Southern Rapahoe Sector of the Greymouth Coalfield. Geostatistical analysis of the database highlights the inadequacy of the present drillhole spacing for preliminary mine planning. The sparsity of hard data at depth results in a lower level of confidence in the accuracy of the 3-D model. Nevertheless, the model and 3-D CAD techniques has been used to target and refine ongoing resource evaluation, and provides the basis for initial reserves. In the future the geologic model will be used as the basis for preliminary and later (optimal) mine planning. It is also expected to accommodate other forms of data input in seam drilling and seismic. Development of the 3-D computer model was a first in the Greymouth Coalfield and highlights both the use of computerised techniques for resource evaluation and mining, and the effects of wide spaced drillhole data on model accuracy. The computer will continue to provide the most efficient and cost effective tool for optimal resource evaluation and mine planning as Greymouth Coal Limited moves from feasibility/mine planning to full production. The increased use of computer-based methods for mine planning should be seen as part of 'The Changing Face of West Coast Mining' in line with the theme of this Conference.

Several glacial episodes have been distinguished in the Shotover Valley. These produced fluvioglacial aggradational deposits downvalley from the terminii, commonly with well-preserved terrace treads, as exemplified near Skippers. Chronological links can be determined between the Shotover tills and sediments and assessed equivalent deposits in the Wakatipu Basin/Kawarau Valley region through axial valley profiling. Constructed relationships suggest older Shotover events were probably large and left little detrital deposits within the valley. In contrast, the younger advances were smaller and valley-constrained. They are modelled as being wholly of Waimea or Otira Glaciation age, advances from the latter period producing the visually distinctive flights of terraceremnants. Both the terraces and the inner gorge, now occupied by the Shotover River, have been extensively worked for alluvial gold. Enrichments in the former environment have predominantly been as bottom or intermediate lags produced during degradation phases of catchment erosion. Surface lags have been locally targeted. Placer mining in terrace areas involved both tunnelling and sluicing techniques. In the modem river the greatest concentrations were on the schist or false bottoms, although flood gold has always contributed to the returns. Placer mining techniques here were highly variable.

The Northland region of New Zealand has a complex geological history which has long been the subject of considerable controversy. Small mineral deposits have been discovered in the past, and some have been mined. Except for aggregates and very high quality china clay, mining is virtually nonexistent at present. Mercury mining is proposed from small deposits in the Kaeo area. Intensive exploration for epithermal precious metals deposits in the past seven years, combined with some recent geological mapping undertaken by the Geological Survey and University thesis students has added greatly to an understanding of Northland's geology. Mapping of the Whangaroa-Kaikohe map sheet at a scale of 1:100 000 by Brown and Laurenson Limited has enabled new geological information to be collated for the first time since 1961, when the last geological map was published. The 'Northland Allochthon' is now observed to be a series of four or more thrust sheets each containing predictable formations. High angle faulting contemporaneous with overthrusting has modified the thrust sheets, and established a series of horsts and grabens. The Pirau Fault is considered to be a major earth fracture.

The Department of Mineral Resources is the lead agency in mine site environment management and control inNew South Wales. The Department introduced a Mining, Rehabilitation and Environmental Management Plan (MREMP) process several years ago in order to integrate the activities of other government agencies who may have a material interest at the mine site. The MREMP process has resulted in a spirit of trust and co-operation between agencies and between agencies and mining companies. The spirit of co-operation has been reflected in greater public confidence that mining is environmentally responsible.

"Long-term strategic planning at BHP Billiton’s Western Australia Iron Ore business aims for sustainable value maximisation of its large, long-life, low-cost, expandable mineral inventory and supply chain infrastructure. While mine plans are key components of this value equation, this objective requires a whole-of-business approach through comprehensive consideration and optimisation of the full value chain. A summary of a proposal to develop a 20 000 tpa underground gold operation in a Forest Park. The environmental constraints are severe and affected the mine development planning and choice of mining method. The mine will use trackless methods to access the narrow 1.5 m ore shoots, and to mine ore by cut and fill methods. The use of Microscoop and CT 1700 HE electric LHDs for mucking, together with special drilling attachments for drilling, is central to efficiency and small Kubota diesel haulers will be used for carrying ore to surface.

Site specific geotechnical data, deposit characteristics and method of mining are key factors when assessing an appropriate slope design philosophy. Mining geotechnics should be viewed as an iterative design process linked closely with mine planning, development and operational safety constraints. This case study presents geotechnical investigations for slope design at Macraes Flat Gold Mine using kinematic, probabilistic and economic analyses tempered with knowledge of site specific conditions. The recommended designs not only reduce early waste stripping tonnages but also provide data to optimise final walls.

Fires are a common and recurrent unwanted event in the operation of open pit mines. In most cases, the causes of events such as fires are already æknownÆ but are either overlooked or not fully addressed in planning. Ongoing rapid growth of the global mining industry is creating a scarcity of skilled personnel, and high turnover within operations. This contributes to loss of corporate memory in risk management activities. RISKGATE« is an online risk management system designed to support and assist in the analysis of priority unwanted events in Australian coal mining operations. Funded by the Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP), RISKGATE« is a knowledge management program that delivers best-practice controls for unwanted events and assists operations in staying abreast of emergent risks and threats. RISKGATE« content has been primarily developed from an association of industry experts, and enriched with input from additional academic and technological resources. In mining operations, RISKGATE« provides a continuum of knowledge and best practice for risk identification, assessment and management. RISKGATE« will assist companies in improving safety performance, operational efficiency, operating practice and training. This paper examines the issues involved in the technical audit and valuation of exploration prospects. Certain methodologies are more appropriate to use depending upon whether the mineral property valuation is of an exploration area, a project under development, or an operating mine. Valuation approaches that are reviewed include the Multiple of Exploration Expenditure, Joint Venture Terms, Rules of Thumb, and particularly the Kilburn Rating Method. The DCF/NPV Financial Simulation Method, even modified by the use of Expected Values, is not considered appropriate for valuing exploration prospects. The choice of the most appropriate methodology and its successful application depends primarily upon the amount of reliable input data available and, more importantly, the experience and judgement of the valuer. It must be remembered that all valuations are time and circumstance specific and will be generally subject to revision as more data becomes available.

As the theme of the conference is ære-discover Otago' from the minerals point of view, it is also timely. Of the eight million ounces of gold recorded produced from Otago, perhaps a quarter of this came from the goldfields of St Bathans, Vinegar Hill and Cambrians. The most notable among them was the Kildare Hill Mine, which is the so-called Blue Lake at St Bathans today. The bottom wash encountered in this mine contained the famous Kildare lead, which averaged 7 1/2 dwt to the dish, and is still one of the richest leads of alluvial gold known in the world. The richness of this lead, the best encountered in these gold fields, is otherwise stated to have yielded more than 42 ounces of gold to the cubic yard. It should be borne in mind that this equates to about $22 000 per cubic metre, in todayÆs values. I have been told by older residents of this district that in fact about 1 million ounces came out of the Kildare mine and associated workings. In todayÆs values, this would be about 530 million dollars worth of gold. The largest mines in the district were at Surface Hill, Kildare Hill, Nicholsons, Vinegar Hill, the Never Fail claim at Shepherds Flat nearby, and at Cambrians. It would appear that in almost every case, work stopped when the bottom wash progressed too deep down dip of the anticline hills on which it was initially found. The mining methods were sluicing and hydraulic elevating, and although the gold bearing ground did not stop, eventually it exceeded the ability of the mining methods then available years ago, to work it further. When it is realised that the previous mining has removed what is likely to be only a low percentage of the gold resources in these fields, a tantalising situation presents itself today in that mining technology now available will enable another cut to be taken off these fields. As in the past, I believe this will be million ounce plus and multi-million dollar scenarios, where the economic and social benefits will become widespread prizes.

The epizonal Ag-Pb-Zn vein deposit at San Bartolome is characterised by a base-metal sulphide assemblage containing the spectacular development of interpenetrating, bladed networks of pyrrhotite which have been replaced by marcasite and pyrite. A similar assemblage displaying the same crystal habits and textures are also a diagnostic feature of the Sn and SnAg deposits ofBolivia. On this basis, it is reasonable to conclude that both deposits were formed from fluids of similar nature and origin. Although no economic accumulation of Sn is known in San Bartolome, further comparison of the geologic setting, age, mineralogy, fluid inclusion data and magmatic association of this deposit with the Bolivian systems has highlighted additional similarities consistent with a hypothesis that more extensive Sn mineralisation might exist in the San Bartolome area.

This paper talks about the experiences of groups we have worked with over the last few years in the Asia-Pacific region (Australia, Canada, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea) and the ways that they have worked to bridge the divide between traditional and introduced structures, governance at a regional level and the introduction of traditional values into monitoring and evaluation practices. In doing this these groups have created structures and processes which have helped them engage both more effectively with external stakeholders while maintaining the legitimacy of their own operations with their own constituents. These are important ideas for those involved in the mining industry that could provide a number of very tangible benefits to mining firms and their engagement with these kinds of groups.
