Poisonous hydrocyanic acid gas (HCN) is sometimes evolved in dangerous quantities from cyanides used in metallurgical and chemical operations. This gas is much used for fumigating buildings, ships, greenhouses, and such commodities as grain and cotton to destroy rats, mice and insect pests. Wherever cyanide fumes are evolved, thorough ventilation is necessary in order to render the sur- rounding air safe to breathe. Many persons have been killed by entering tanks and fumigated places too soon, and a simple test for this gas would promote safety. In view of the need for an easy method for quantitatively determining HCN in air, the three color reactions used originally for testing HCN in solution tions *** were modified and adapted. The reactions employ (1) picric acid (CH(NO2)3OH) which is yellow but combines with hydrogen cyanide to form a red- purple dye, isopurpuric acid****; (2) phenolphthalin (CH1604), which is a reduc- tian product of the phenolphthalein (CH4) used for acid indicator, this colorless substance is oxidized***** by presence of HCN to pink colored phenolph- thalin; and (3) guaiacum which oxidized from colorless to blue******. Phenolph- thalin and guaiacum require the presence of copper compounds which catalize the color formation by reduction of cupric cyanide. Volume-rate-of-flow measurements were made of the flow of mercury through porous samples under conditions of no field, magnetic field transverse to the direction of flow, and transverse magnetic field and electric current to determine if a magnetic method might be potentially useful in the study of pore-size distribution. No change was observed in the flow rate from the application of a magnetic field alone. The application of both field and current produced an electromagnetic pumping action with or against the direction of flow, depending upon the direction of the electric current. This pumping effect was observed to be greater in a rectangular porcelain sample than the calculated value for an equal-Sized open channel.

The need for a simple, very sensitive, and accurate method for the determination of benzene in blood and urine was evident throughout a recent study of chronic benzene (C6H6) poisoning conducted cooperatively by the United States Bureau of Mines, The Barrett Company, and the producers of benzene. A combustion method which will be described in a later publication, end a previously described5/ adaptation of Smyth's method were developed and used during that investigation. The adaptation of Smyth's method gave satisfactory results when dealing with exposure conditions that produced chronic poisoning in a comparatively few days, but it was time-consuming and lacked the accuracy necessary for a study of the absorption, distribution, and fate of benzene in the body during exposure to threshold concentrations of benzene vapor in air. The combustion procedure was satisfactory from the standpoint of sensitivity but was cumbersome, intricate, time-consuming, and required the use of special and somewhat expensive physical and. chemical apparatus. Following the termination of this study of chronic poisoning, possibilities for developing better methods occurred, and these have been investigated by the Bureau of Mines with the aid of Relief Works Division personnel. A microcolorimetric method for the determination of benzene in air has been described recently.6/ The present report deals with the adaptation of this new colorimetric method to the determination

Bonding angles, promotion energies, and relative atomic sizes can be estimated through the solution of a set of algebraic equations generated from simple atomic models, and quantum mechanical parameters such as bond strength can be estimated from simple, hydrogenic form-wave functions. The precepts of The Engel-Brewer Theory are melded with the "Crystal Approximation Model" to produce atomic-structure models making these predictions, The two-valence-electron case is presented in this report. For the candidate atoms Be, Mg, Ca, Sr, and Ba the calculated promotion energies agreed within a few percent of their experimental values. These atomic parameters determine the possible crystal structure of the candidate atoms when alloyed. This is part of the effort at the U.S. Bureau of Mines to develop methods for alloy design in response to requirements for new high-performance alloys that conserve critical or rare materials.

A refractory-lined, garage-type automobile incinerator with a natural gas afterburner for air pollution control was cooperatively constructed and tested by the Bureau of Mines and the Wasatch Metal & Salvage Co. in Salt Lake City, Utah. The incinerator is capable of relatively smokeless burning of 32 to 60 cars per day, dependent on the degree to which the cars are stripped prior to incineration. Preliminary burning campaigns indicate the cost of incineration to be approximately $2.75 per car.

Fly ash from four sources and in certain proportions was shown to assist chemical coagulation of turbid water and settling of chemically induced floc. Fly ash reduced the time required to form the first visible floc, promoted more uniform flocs about 2 mm in diameter, and increased the mean settling rate of floc particles. Also, the addition of fly ash produced denser sludges than those obtained with alum alone. Final turbidities were independent of fly ash particle size and carbon content. Optimum proportions of fly ash additive are given.

Silica, the world's most abundant mineral compound, is composed of the two commonest elements - oxygen and silicon. In addition to being the life-giving constituent of the atmosphere and the major element in the waters of the earth, oxygen comprises almost half of all known terrestrial matter and occurs combined with most of the other ninety-odd elements in the solid crust of the earth; however, a large proportion of the oxygen is combined with silicon. Silicon is second only to oxygen in abundance in nature and constitutes more than one-fourth of all known terrestrial matter. This Technical Memorandum Report is a collection of three working memoranda, prepared during the course of our work for the Bureau of Mines and bound together for convenient reference. These working memoranda present preliminary performance estimates, for baseband voice and narrow- band through-the-earth electromagnetic communications systems of principal interest to the Bureau, for operational/emergency mine communications. The calculations were prepared to obtain early indications of the feasibility and governing parameters of such communications systems. They are based on limited, but pertinent, coal mine electromagnetic noise data acquired to-date by Bureau of Mines contractors; and of theoretical signal-attenuation characteristics for two transmitter antenna types of present interest to the Bureau. The memoranda examine the cases of baseband voice and narrowband communications for uplink and downlink transmissions, for frequencies up to 3kHz. Downlink transmissions are via a horizontal wire antenna, up- link transmissions via a vertical-axis loop antenna, for typical mine depths of 300, 600, and 1000 feet. Representative coal-mine overburden conductivities of 10-2 mhos/meter (moderate and common) and 10-1 mhos/meter (high) were used; for voice and narrowband, 10-1 for narrowband only. Examples of high, moderate, and low; surface and subsurface; harmonic and broadband-impulsive noise conditions were taken from NBS and Westinghouse (WGL) mine noise data, together with examples of high- and low levels of ELF atmospheric noise taken from M.I.T. Lincoln Laboratory data. These feasibility calculations are not intended to serve as definitive and complete treatments, but as a starting point: to establish first-order estimates of the magnitude and variability of transmitter power requirements under different noise, overburden conductivity, and mine depth conditions; to identify relationships, conditions, or frequencies that are likely to limit or enhance system performance; to reveal items requiring further investigation and data still required; and to suggest practical methods for optimizing system performance. These objectives were met by the calculations. Simple experiments to support these calculations can and should be carried out; together with more detailed investigations of specific modulation, coding, noise-suppression, voice-compression and signal-conditioning techniques, aimed at producing through-the-earth operational/emergency mine-communication systems that are not only effective, but practical and economically sound.

Addition of an acid waste to an alkaline cyanide waste was investigated for five different combinations of electroplating wastes. At the optimum final pH values of the mixtures, metals and cyanides were almost quantita¬tively precipitated. No evolution of hydrogen cyanide was detected by a few additional processing steps, significant amounts of variable metals were recovered for recycling the waste-plus-Waste step is attractive because no reagents are required, metals arc concentrated, and a relatively harmless effluent that meets most water quality Standards for cyanide content is produced.

In connection with its investigation looking to the prevention of waste and the increase of safety and efficiency in the mineral indus- tries the Bureau of Mines has undertaken a study of the possible uses of the electric furnace in metallurgy. This bulletin presents a com- pilation of such data as seem to be useful for the information of persons who may be interested in the matter. In the application of electricity to metallurgy three kinds of processes are involved, namely, mechanical, thermal, and electrolytic. Under the mechanical application of electricity come those proc- esses of dressing and concentrating ores that are known as either electrostatic or electromagnetic processes. In electrothermic processes the current is used as a source of heat. The fundamental differences between the various types of electric furnace that are at present in commercial use relate to the manner in which the electric current is applied, as may be noted by reference to that part of this report in which the subject is discussed. In electrolytic processes the electric current is used for depositing metals from solutions. The process may be conducted in one of the following ways: (1) The material to be treated may be put into solu- tion and then electrolyzed, the material thus treated forming the electrolyte; (2) the material to be treated may form the anode or be placed in contact with the anode; or (3) the material to be treated may form the cathode or be placed in contact with the cathode. This report treats of electrothermic processes, with the possible exception of those for the reduction of aluminum from its ores. Moreover, of the processes used in the so-called electrochemical in- dustries only those for the reduction of an ore to metal, or to a com- pound of the metal that is of value in itself, or is an aid in metallurgical work, are here discussed.

A 1/2-ton experimental coke oven was installed ac the Bureau of Mines Southern Experiment Station, Tuscaloosa, Ala., in 1948. Designated as the Tuscaloosa oven, this unit features a 17-inch carbonizing chamber, globar heating elements, and silica-brick walls designed to simulate as closely as possible the carbonizing conditions for commercial slot-type ovens. Because of the small force exerted on the oven walls in most tests conducted to date (probably owing to the practice of charging coals and blends at a moisture content approximating that normal to commercial plants operating in this district), little information has been obtained about expansion properties. Two sole-heated ovens have therefore been constructed and used as supplementary equipment for determining the expansion properties of coals tested in the Tuscaloosa oven. The reasons for constructing the Tuscaloosa oven, the details of design, the operating, characteristics of the oven and the reproducibility of results have been discussed in previous publications. 3 4 5/ The present report deals with the effects of substituting various high- and low-volatile coals for components of a selected base blend carbonized under conditions similar to those normally used for producing foundry coke. Results of tests of 11 coals and 14 blends indicate that several blends tested rave cokes having physical properties very similar to those produced from the reference blend.

Enclosed cabs are a primary means of reducing equipment operators? silica dust exposure at surface mines. The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health recently performed a laboratory study to evaluate which factors on an enclosed-cab filtration system are most significant. The various factors evaluated were intake filter efficiency, intake air leakage, intake filter loading, wind infiltration, use of a recirculation filter, and the use of an intake pressurization fan. The result of this laboratory testing has shown that the two most important factors for an effective filtration system on an enclosed cab were the efficiency of the intake filter and the use of a recirculation filter. A higher-efficiency intake filter considerably increased the quality of the intake air that was delivered into the enclosed cab. It also was determined that air leakage around the intake filter notice-ably reduced its air cleaning effectiveness. The second key factor is the use of a recirculation filter, which was shown to improve the air quality in the enclosed cab by six to 12.7 times more than the intake filter alone. The reason for the significant improvement was that the cab air was constantly drawn through the recirculation filter, thus continually filtering the dust out of the air.

"A microscope-based spectrophotometer has been developed to measure superoxide release from single pulmonary alveolar macrophages (PAM) or other phagocytes in culture. Results indicate that PAM respond to stimulation by phorbol myristate acetate (PMA). It appears that some PAM do not release 02 upon stimulation by PMA; however, those that do release 0, show differences in: (I) the total amount of 0, released, (2) the rate of release of 02 and (3) the time delay for release of 02. The significance of measuring 02 release from single cells is two-fold. It allows the simultaneous study of 02 release and electrical potential changes across the membrane of PAM and it allows the study of differences in 02 release among cells. Thus, the function of Normal PAM and the dysfunction of PAM exposed to coal dusts can be more closely studied on single cells.Pulmonary alveolar macrophages (PAM), free cells found in the lungs, protect the lungs by removing inhaled foreign debris and bacteria. The macrophages do this by engulfing and then internalizing the foreign matter (phagocytosis). Stimulation of PAM causes the release of super-oxide radical (02) which has been shown to be the primary metabolite involved in the killing of bacteria by phagocytes (3,8,12). The super-oxide radical is highly reactive and is spontaneously or enzymatically converted to other antibacterial oxidants, including hydrogen peroxide (H202), singlette oxygen ( 02), hydroxyl radical toil'), and hypochlorous acid (HOCl) (2, 3,8,11,12).Exposure of PAM to dusts may lead to dysfunction of this cell-type and to a greater risk of lung damage or infection upon subsequent exposure to toxic dusts. To date, much of the research with this cell-type has used cytotoxicity (cell death) as a measure of dysfunction. Although this is an important end point, PAM dysfunction may occur at doses below those which lead to cell death. In addition, dysfunction has been measured using large numbers of cells. In order to obtain a clear understanding of the mechanisms involved in dysfunction, measurements should be made on single cells. As mentioned earlier, one of the major roles of this cell type is its anti-bacterial actions. Therefore, asessment of release of superoxide radical in single cells is important in determining the functional behavior of PAM before and after exposure to dusts. Since measurements of 02 production have not been made on single cells the purpose of this study is to develop the methodology needed to study release of 02 from single cells.Recent studies have suggested that a relationship exists between the release of 02 and changes in the electrical properties of phagocytes. The change in membrane potential is thought to be the initial step in superoxide production (6,9). Stimulants which cause 02 release also cause changes in the transmembrane potential of phagocytes (9) and in the permeability of the cell membrane to ions (6). For example, stimulants which cause the release of 0, from neutrophils have also been shown to increase the membrane transport of Na+ , K+ and Ca+2 and stimulation of macrophages leads to increases in Na and perhaps Ca permeability with a subsequent change in membrane potential. In some cases, phagocytic activity has been shown to depend upon the extracellular concentrations of these ions (6). Holian and Daniele (7) have shown evidence that the redistribution ofcellular Ca in alveolar macrophages is an initial step leading to 0, release. In order to provide direct evidence that 02- production is related to electrical changes across the plasma membrane of phagocytes, these two phenomena must be analyzed simultaneously on single cells. Ultimately, measurements of 0, release using the methodology developed in this study will be combined with electrophysiological tech¬niques to study both superoxide release and membrane potential changes simultaneiously on single PAM, and to examine the effects of coal and mineral dusts on their physiological fu"

Mining has one of the highest annual average fatality rates among major US industries. Health and safety dangers have been inherent to mining since the early days of picks and shovels. Even though miners' health and safety has improved over the years, mining is still one of the most dangerous occupations. Mining was traditionally a low tech industry. It is now driven by competitive pressures to go high-tech by using programmable electronics (PE) for machine control, atmospheric monitoring and material processing. The industry's experience with the functional safety of PE is limited compared with other industries. Thus, PE is an emerging technology for mining that can potentially create or worsen hazards. The US National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Pittsburgh Research Laboratory in Pittsburgh, PA is addressing the safety of this new technology. NIOSH has a proactive project to generate recommendations for addressing the functional safety of PE-based mining systems before the technology proliferates. The recommendations take the form of a safety framework encompassing the entire life cycle for a PE-based mining system.

This report presents data collected during research by the Bureau of Mines on corrosion of grinding media. Corrosion rates of eight alloys commonly used in grinding media were tested in synthetic mill water using an ultrasonic grinding device especially designed for this work. Electro-chemical measurements showed variations in corrosion rates for these alloys between 9.8 mpy for medium-carbon steels and 0.14 mpy for high chromium white irons. Bureau data are discussed along with data from the literature to indicate that corrosion causes less than 10 pct of the wear of grinding media in commercial grinding mills. A comparison of corrosion rates for various types of grinding media shows that alloying elements and electrochemically active inclusions in steel affect the corrosion behavior of the media.

As part of the first-order assessment of potential manganese nodule processing reject waste materials, the Bureau of Mines estimated the physical and chemical characteristics of reject waste materials that would be generated from each of five potential process flowsheets. These processes were chosen because of their economic and technical feasibility for first-generation nodule processing. A brief description of the five processes is given to show process inputs and outputs, The physical characteristics are predicted based on land-based laterite processing where applicable, and where no land-based analog exists, on the basis of process chemistry. The probable chemical characteristics such as element content and compound form are tabulated for each process for 16 elements: As, Ba, Be, Cd, Go, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, Sb, Se, TI, and Zn. These elements were chosen based on their presence on the toxic substance list of priority pollutants, EP toxicity criteria, and major and minor elements of economic importance (Co, Fe, Mn, and Mo). Physical and chemical analyses as well as results of the EP toxicity test of one industrially supplied pilot plant reject waste material are presented.

Work on the Abbott-quicksilver property was part of the general program of th~ Bureau of Mines in its investigation of domestic mineral resources, which are essential to national defense or industry and of which our present or probable future supplies are inadequate. The mine was discovered in 1862, and the intermittent production up to 1947 has totaled around 37,500 flasks of quicksilver. Output has come from ore shoots formed in the vicinity of fault intersections in a narrow zone composed of lenses of silicified serpentine breccia interbedded with shale. Work by the Bureau included the drilling of six diamond-drill holes aggregating 2,845 feet. Several possible ore zones were intersected by the drill holes. Field work was begun in April 1948 and concluded in October of the same year. This report gives detailed results of the diamond drilling and a brief account of the history and description of the ore deposits.
