It appears that the competition for increasingly scarce international mining investment capital will continue among developing countries. Indeed, there is growing evidence this competition may be on the verge of becoming destructive and cutthroat in nature. While this may be viewed as good news by short-term, speculative investors, it could have dangerous repercussions for international minerals producers over the long-term. It seems there has been a continuous parade of traveling foreign delegations touting the virtues of mineral investment in one country or another. These pitches all contain the politically correct key words, such as macro-economic reform, political reform, privatization, liberalization of laws governing mining and related investment incentives, reconciliation of ownership and right-to mine issues, and tax reform specially tailored for the minerals sector. Unfortunately, some of the information being trumpeted is based on plans, concepts or hopes for change rather than actual reforms approved by all necessary governmental entities. In yet other situations, the information provided consists of half-truths at best. Too often, potential minerals investors, faced with metals and minerals prices hovering near their recession lows and the need to offset old, high-cost operations, desperately want to believe all they hear about investment alternatives cast in a near-utopian setting. However, the virtues being proffered for mining investment abroad do not eliminate the need for careful scrutiny of subtle variations of traditional risks associated with foreign investment that can drastically affect the economic viability of mining projects.

Bacterial leaching is a mature technology and has been applied in six commercial plants with others in the design stage or under construction. Bacterial oxidation is a relatively inexpensive process which uses naturally occurring soil bacteria to assist in extraction of base and precious metals. Bacterial oxidation has ini­tially been applied for gold recovery but the technology is now being transferred to base metal leaching with processes already developed for copper, cobalt and nickel. Bacterial oxidation plants often have capital and operating cost advantages over competing technologies and do not need a highly skilled workforce. The most common species found in the conditions used for bacterial oxidation and bacterial leaching are Thiobacillus fer­rooxidans and Thiobacillus thiooxidans. One common species other than Thiobaci!lus found in the commercial bacterial leach cultures is Leptospirillum ferrooxidans. Mixed cultures of the three species named here have formed the basis of the technolo­gy applied in most of the commercial applications of bacterial leaching to date. These bacterial species already mentioned all belong in the classification of mesophiles and have an operating range from 20 to 43°C. One other culture, a moderate thermophile operating over the range 40 to 50°C, has been used in one commercial plant in Western Australia. Bacterial oxidation takes place in acidic solutions under aer­obic conditions. The oxidation reaction normally produces iron (II) in solution which is ultimately conve1ted into the iron (III) form. The pH value falls naturally as the sulphide minerals are oxidised and the starting pH value can fall as low as pH 0.6 as the oxidation reaction proceeds. This paper examines the impact of the technology selection and its application on the design, engineering and operation of a bacterial oxidation plant. The effect of the changes to these para­meters on the cost of the bacterial oxidation plant is discussed.

5.1 INTRODUCTION There are several types of surface ground disturbances, each of which is immediately transmitted to surface structures and causes damage of various forms, depending on the location of the structures in the subsidence basin. Many criteria have also been proposed for defining the potential structural damage. All of these topics will be discussed in this chapter. 5.2 TYPES OF GROUND DAMAGES There are two types of ground damage, continuous and dis¬continuous, that could inflict damages to surface structures. Dis¬continuous ground damage is open fractures of various degrees. Four types of fractures are commonly seen (Brauner, 1973b): 1. Fissures or cracks. Cracks are the most common form of ground damage and range from completely closed to several feet wide. Surface cracks are most prominent when the ratio of mining depth to mining height is smaller than 30 to 50 times mining height. Cracks initiate parallel to, but ahead of the moving long¬wall face at some intervals when the depth-to-mining height ratio is less than 25 to 30. As the face continues to move, they open up and then close gradually, and in most cases eventually close up completely when the face moves farther away. Sometimes when the depth-to-mining height ratio is larger, cracks may initiate be¬hind the face and go through the same cycle. Cracks are also more likely to occur in the hill when the face is moving in the uphill direction. Cracks also occur at or near both sides of the panel edges. Those cracks tend to remain open permanently. When the surface is covered with grass or other vegetation, cracks of less than 1 to 2 in. wide usually do not penetrate it and become invisible on the surface. 2. Steps. A step may occur when the longwall face stops abruptly if the mining depth-to-mining height ratio is less than 20. Steps may also occur along the panel edges. Steps also range from a few inches to a few feet in width and depth. If planes of weakness are oriented favorably, ground will slide along these planes and form steps on the surface. 3. Cave-in pits. These result from local collapse of the ground from the mine level to the surface when the mining depth is less than 150 ft and occur mostly above abandoned mined lands. They may be as large as 40 ft wide and deep. 4. Bumps (compression ridges). Bumps result from ground compression and occur mostly near panel center some time after mining. Bumps of up to 4 ft, but mostly 1 to 2 ft, have been identified. Continuous ground damage refers to the formation of the sub¬sidence basin where continuous nondestructive ground deforma¬tions occur. As mentioned earlier, continuous ground deforma¬tions associated with a subsidence basin include subsidence, slope, curvature, displacement, horizontal strain, twisting, and shearing. 5.3 TYPES OF SURFACE STRUCTURAL DAMAGES Both continuous and discontinuous ground disturbance cause damage to surface structures. A. Structural Damages Due to Discontinuous Ground Disturbance 1. Fissures or cracks. Open cracks can cause dislocation of surface structure if the gaps are sufficiently large so that the struc¬tural elements cannot resist but fail. On the other hand, minor cracks affect only the appearance, and not the structural integrity. 2. Steps. When a surface structure is located on a step, some portions of the structure lose support and become overhung. In the case of a residential house, there will likely be many open frac¬tures in the overhung portions, followed in severe cases by sepa¬ration of the superstructure at the edge of the step. 3. Cave-in pits. If the caved-in pit is larger than the surface structure, the structure will drop into the pit and become unstable. If the caved-in pit is smaller than the surface structure, the struc¬ture may either become overhung or lose support in some portions. In either case, it is unsafe for use. 4. Bumps (compression ridges). Bumps will disrupt roadways or house floor. If located under supporting members of the struc¬tures, it may cause damages. B. Structural Damage Due to Continuous Ground Disturbances 1. Subsidence. Pure subsidence or uniform subsidence over an area does not cause any structural damage. However, if it becomes a topographical low area, it may be flooded with water and make the surface structures unusable. It must be noted that the flat bottom area at the center of the final supercritical subsidence basin does not reach that position suddenly. Rather, as shown in Fig. 3.1, it is subjected to the dynamic surface deformation asso¬ciated with the traveling subsidence basin before it is left behind to be part of the flat-bottom area. Therefore any structure located at the center of the final supercritical subsidence basin must be able to resist the dynamic surface deformation in order not to be dam¬aged. 2. Slope. Ground slope will induce tilting of the structure. Tall structures with small base areas, such as water towers, chimneys, and power transmission towers are most sensitive to ground slope. If the ground slope is such that if after tilting the center of the gravity of the tilted structure falls outside the base area, it will topple, but this seldom occurs. Ground slope will change the designed slope of a buried trans¬portation pipeline, either increasing or decreasing the original slope depending on whether the ground slope coincides with or opposes the original slope. There are maximum allowable final slopes for various types of transporting materials. Ground slope also affects highways and railways. There is a maximum allowable final slope for a railway because tractive effort increases 1/1000 of its weight for every increase of 1/1000 in grade. 3. Curvature. There are positive (convex) and negative (con¬cave) curvatures. When a surface structure is located on a positive curvature, both ends become unsupported, followed by bending upward at the midportion. The top portion is subjected to more severe stretching than the lower one. Aiming at the subjective impact caused by subjective weighting method in the establishment of rockburst risk attribute identification and prediction model, the combined weighting method was introduced to eliminate the influence of unreasonable weight of each index. Eight discriminant indexes affecting the risk of rockburst were selected. Through the literature review, relevant rockburst cases were collected and 8 index rockburst sample sets were established. A variety of machine learning methods were used to analyze the feature importance of discriminant indexes in the samples, and then to determine the objective weight values of different methods. Combined with the subjective weights determined by the Analytic Hierarchy Process, the combination of weights were successively carried out. Based on the attribute recognition theory, the combination weights with different objective weight methods were established to identify the rockburst risk attributes, and verified by the confidence criterion. The results show that the objective weight value determined by the feature importance analysis of machine learning reduces the subjectivity of the weight of Analytic Hierarchy Process method, improves the prediction accuracy, and makes the prediction result closer to the fact.

In regard to the paper by J.B. Gwiazda, it makes a highly technical approach to show that the .u factor used by designers of lemniscate-guided roof supports has never really been confirmed as a maximum and assumes that convergence is vertical. Also, the paper does not appear to take into account deflection of structures, which occurs when the lemniscate and base members are fully loaded to their maximum stress level, nor the front to back line of the support in relation to differential roof to floor movements caused by strata movements under pressure. It is not unusual for differential movements to be slightly diagonal to the line of the support, particularly in faulted areas and on gradient faces. The paper also does not take into account consolidation of fines immediately above and below the support. Generally speaking, any differential movement is from face to waste and under these conditions the .u of 0.3, which appears to be an international standard, has worked in practice. However, if the face end of the support is lower than the waste end, then the µ of 0.3 can be considerably increased, giving rise to the damage mentioned in the paper. The ideal design should aim for a slightly forward bias in the lemniscate guide so that the last increment of setting is toward the face, tending to close any fissures that may have developed during the support advance cycle. The support should also be fitted with positive set valves to ensure that a high setting load density is attained to minimize bed separation. As far as powered supports are concerned, convergence is irresistible and all powered supports converge at their rated yield load. A similar principle can be applied to the differential roof to floor movements to drastically reduce the very high forces that would otherwise be applied to the lemniscate structures and pins and that, in turn, are transferred to the base arrangement and floor loading. Any differential movements are usually catered for by the 0.3 µ factor or deflection of structures in the lemniscate guide arrangement and consolidation of the floor. The floor loading, due to differential movement, is in addition to the support convergence load and requires additional bearing area to avoid possible floor penetration. Some seven years ago, Fletcher Sutcliffe Wild Ltd. (FSW) introduced a lemniscate-guided shield support where the lemniscate linkage is connected to the roof bar through two horizontally converging rams to allow differential movement to take place above a given rated figure. This is a known force and can be guarded against, whereas with rigid connections the forces, as yet, are unconfirmed. By careful design, a horizontal force in excess of 6 MN (60 tons) opposes differential movements for a total ram loading of only 2.5 MN (25 tons), or 1.25 MN (12% tons) each. This principle can considerably reduce the length and weight of the support in comparison with a rigid pin-type structure; also, the yield load rating can be increased without affecting the lemniscate forces. The graph shows the tensile and compressive forces in a lemniscate linkage of a support with and without hydrostore. These forces react into both the roof beam and base members and, as can be seen from the support height to linkage load graph, a considerable reduction in these reactions is gained by the use of the FSW patented hydrostore system. Floor loading is considerably reduced under maximum µ conditions, and by allowing the roof bar to move with the strata, some degree of improvement to strata control is achieved in line with the assumptions in the paper. In practice, these movements have only been in the region of a few millimeters, which, in turn, reflects on the improvements to strata control by the addition of positive set valves.

Mining is one of world's oldest industries. Its rich history continues into modern times. The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) located in southeastern New Mexico is writing the next chapter in mining history. In fact, WIPP technology is the key to closure of the nuclear cycle with the disposal of nuclear waste in a deep geological repository. It might seem odd that the age-old institution of mining would be linked to the problem of nuclear waste disposal. In fact, the nuclear industry would not exist without mining. Uranium ore is mined from either underground or surface mines as the initial step in harnessing the magnificent resource of nuclear energy.

"The proposed Minne Lusa Stormwater Conveyance Sewer is part of the Phase 3 Major Combined Sewer Overflow projects to be scheduled as part of the City of Omaha’s Long Term Control Plan (LTCP). The system features a 6,100 foot long, 14-foot inside diameter tunnel to provide for conveyance of separated stormwater from previously completed and future LTCP sewer separation projects to the expanded Storz West and Pershing Detention Basins and subsequently, the Missouri River. The tunnel will operate as a pressurized system and convey flows of up to 2,500 ft3/s resulting from a 10-year, 24 hour storm event. This paper provides a synopsis of the project with a focus on the overall design aspects related to siting the tunnel alignment in an urban environment, the hydraulic analyses performed to choose a pressurized system rather than an open channel system, and expected geologic conditions. Tunnel alignment and profile and geological profile are presented, as well as an overview of the construction related impacts considered during design. PROJECT BACKGROUND The proposed Minne Lusa Stormwater (MLSW) Conveyance System will provide for conveyance of separated stormwater from previously completed, and future, LTCP sewer separation projects to the expanded Storz West and Pershing Detention Basins and subsequently, the Missouri River. The project location is representatively shown on Figure 1; the overall conveyance system is represented in Figure 2. The MLSW Conveyance System consists of three separate construction contracts under Contract Numbers: OPW-52004 – The Storz West Detention Basin to 31st & Paxton Tunnel; OPW-52454 – The Storz West/Pershing Detention Basin Grading and Improvements; and, OPW-52752 – The Pershing Detention Basin to ML Outfall Channel. This paper focuses on the project covered under Contract OPW-52004: design and construction of an approximately 6,110 feet 14-foot inside diameter (ID) tunnel, constructed using a Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM). The tunnel will receive flows from the Paxton Boulevard (PB) and the John Creighton Boulevard (JCB) Stormwater Conveyance Sewers and convey the flows to the Storz West Detention Basin, resulting in CSO volume and flow rate reductions to the Minne Lusa Outfall Channel and the North Interceptor."

This article describes research conducted by the University of Alabama's Mineral Resources Institute on removing sulfur from coal using a combination of gravity concentration and flotation methods. The research used the gravity and centrifugal force capabilities of Humphrey's spiral to remove part of the pyritic sulfur and ash. Flotation of the Humphrey's spiral coal concentrate removed additional sulfur and ash. In addition to obtaining good recoveries of high quality coal, the tests demonstrated that pyrite in the wastes could be isolated as enriched flotation products by the combined gravity-flotation approach. Domestic coal production in 1980 reached a record 757 Mt (835 million st). Forecasts are that coal production and use will approach 907 Mt (1 billion st) by 1985, with much of the increased production being used for electrical generation. Of current production, it is estimated that about 454 Mt (500 million st) of coal nationwide are subjected to some degree of cleaning, ranging from crushing and screening to gravity concentration and flotation. With expanded coal production and more rigid controls placed on coal combustion, it is reasonable to assume that the tonnage subjected to some form of preparation will increase, with time, thereby adding to the burden of coal rejects being generated. A major problem associated with increased coal use for electricity generation is the need for utilities to conform to emerging federal air quality standards for sulfur oxide emissions from power plants. To a lesser extent, other industrial operations burning coal face a similar situation. Controlling sulfur oxide emissions by using low-sulfur coal or resorting to stack gas desulfurization are two recognized approaches, but removing sulfur from the coal, if possible, by physical beneficiation before combustion is preferred because of its simplicity and lower cost. Reducing the inorganic sulfur in coal to tolerable limits by physical beneficiation, including flotation, as now practiced, is still relatively inefficient and has not kept pace with the more sophisticated physical beneficiation approaches generally employed by the nonfuel minerals industry. As one phase of a broad program conducted by the Mineral Resources Institute at the University of Alabama on sampling and evaluating impounded fine size waste coal, tests were made using samples from two impoundments to determine the quality of coal recoverable by a combination of Humphrey's spiral concentration and flotation. Particular attention was given to organic and inorganic sulfur deportment and distribution in the various products. Another objective was to determine if pyrite in the waste could be recovered for possible marketing. The use of Humphrey's spirals to concentrate fine coal was practiced as early as 1947. At that time, the Hudson Coal Co. used spirals to concentrate anthracite fines. In 1950, spirals were used to treat fine-size bituminous coal and later, in 1976, spirals were reportedly used for removing pyrite from fine-size coal. More recent investigations have discussed the use of Humphrey's spirals for treating fine-size waste coal in Alabama. Samples Description Washer waste samples were obtained from two impoundments. One sample was representative of waste generated during washing steam coal from the American, Pratt, and Nickel plate seams in Alabama. The other sample represented metallurgical coal washer waste from processing coal from the Carter, Johnson, and Milldale seams. Partial samples analyses are shown in Table 1, and screen analyses of the samples are given in Tables 2 and 3. Screen ana¬lyses showed that one sample contained about 4% of material coarser than 2 mm (10 mesh) and the other contained about 13% of plus 2 mm (10 mesh) material. Also, the analyses indicated that ash and sulfur increased as the material's particle size decreased. Experimental Laboratory Tests Sink and float tests using a heavy liquid (1.4 specific gravity) were made on the different screen sizes shown in Tables 2 and 3 to determine the effectiveness of gravity concentration for separating coal from pyrite and other gangue constituents. Tests indicated that gravity separation, under optimum conditions, could be expected to yield coal products containing 10-12% ash, and 0.2-0.3% pyritic sulfur. Introduction Coal mining in Alaska's interior, specifically in the Healy area, began as early as 1918 with the construction of the Alaska Railroad. Mining was originally limited to underground operations but has expanded to entirely surface operations. In 1943, the Usibelli Coal Mine was formed and started developing Alaska's first surface mine east of Suntrana (Usibelli Coal Miner, 1984). Production from the local coal deposits has steadily increased and, in 1978, surface mining of Poker Flats was initiated (Fig. 1). Currently, a 25-m3 (33-cu yd) walking dragline strips two coal seams, using an extended bench on the second pass. In addition, a fleet of trucks and shovels are used for coal removal and some limited overburden stripping. In 1984, a contract was signed between Usibelli Coal Mine and Sun Eel Shipping Co. in 1984. Since then, production has nearly doubled to more than 1.3 Mt/a (1.5 million stpy). This article will discuss geotechnical constraints on mining within the steeply dipping coal deposits that exist within the Poker Flats mining area. Specifically, the article will describe how the mining operation retriggered an historic landslide on the No. 5 coal seam (Fig. 2). And the article tells how a mine plan was developed that allowed the coal to be safely removed without inducing additional movement. Regional geology The coal-bearing group in the Nenana coal field is of Tertiary Age. It is overlain in some areas by several thousand feet of Tertiary gravels - the Nenana Gravels. In areas mined by surface methods, the Nenana Gravels have been eroded off, and up to 30 m (100 ft) of quaternary outwash gravels overlay the coal-bearing formations. The coal-bearing group is divided into five formations: Healy Creek, Sanctuary, Suntrana, Lignite, and Grubstake (Wahrhaftig, 1969). Lignite Creek lies on the north limb of a west plunging anticline. This has brought the Suntrana coal-hearing formations near enough to the surface to allow surface mining. Mining is presently in progress on the south side of Lignite Creek in the Poker Flats area. The coal-bearing formation is cut off to the south by a fault having perhaps several thousand feet of vertical displacement, with the upthrust side to the north. South of this fault, Nenana Gravels are exposed on the surface. The Suntrana Formation contain the minable reserves at Poker Flats. This formation is a repeated sequence of poorly consolidated pebbly sandstone near the bottom, grading through a silty fine sandstone to a footwall clay unit immediately below a coal seam cap. The footwall clays are high plasticity clays to silty clays. It has been reported that they contain 30% to 50% montmorillonite (Usibelli Coal Mine Inc., 1982). There are six coal seams in the Suntrana Formation, No. I (the lower seam) through No. 6. Only the top four seams are currently exposed. No. 3, No. 4, and No. 6 seams are the only mined seams. The No. 5 seam is very thin or not present. Portions of the undisturbed Suntrana Formation are overlain by up to 15 m (50 ft) of Quaternary outwash gravels or recent landslide rubble. The surface is overlain by a very thin layer of muskeg and isolated areas of permafrost. In many areas, the outwash gravels are found immediately below the surface muskeg. Numerous landslides have been documented along the north facing slopes of Lignite Creek (US Geological Survey, 1970, and Wahrhaftig, 1958). These appear to be surficial solifluction or skin flow types of landslides. In addition, deep-seated structurally controlled slides are also evident on both the north and south sides of Lignite Creek. Structural features Premining aerial photographs (Fig. 3) of the Lignite Creek slopes in the Poker Flats area indicate substantial evidence of deep-seated landsliding. The landslides noted in Fig. 3 are both inside and outside of the current mining area. Surface mapping and geologic exploration indicate that the coal seams are dipping out of the slopes within the noted slide areas. It is suspected that, historically, these landslides were triggered by undercutting of the toe of the slopes by Lignite Creek. And sliding it thought to have taken place on one or more of the clay beds underlying the coal seams (Golder, 1985). The slide areas are characterized by semicircular head scarps and slumped topography. Based on the premining photographs, these slides do not appear to have been recently active. The basic compression-yield concept of roof support for mine roadways requires that the mine roof be placed in a state of compressive stress. The compressive stress may be achieved using a support system such as an entry truss or other specialty truss device. Furthermore, the roof must be allowed to yield, but with great resistance when abutment loads are placed on the roadway. The resisted yielding may be provided using a new yieldable steel prop, known by the trade name, YIPP~. The yieldable steel prop can allow as much as 1.5 m[5 ft] of yield, or up to approximately 40% of the opening height, while providing a resistance in excess of 60 mt[66st]. More than fifteen mining operations including coal, trona and hard rock mines have field tested the YIPPI . Present results indicate that the yieldable prop provides a cost-effective alternative to wood cribs, concrete cribs, hydraulic props and other steel prop supports. The paper describes the YIPPI including its unique principle of operation, its applications and actual field performance.

The situation of Japanes coal mine is in the severe enviroment, because the policy on coal mining has changed. Every year one or two coal mines will be foced to close. To continue the production of coal, we have to reduce the cost of production. Therefore, the mining by longwall method which is more than 250m was attempted at Taiheiyou Coal Mine to reduce the cost and this mining method have had successful results. To get successful results by this mining method, the controlling and prediction of gas emission from the longwall panel will be most important things. In this paper, the comparison of the predicted gas emission from the mining panel based on the measured gas content by using new device with the observed results is described.

Radon is an established lung carcinogen and remains the most important environmental radiation exposure. It was estimated that inhalation of radon and its short-lived decay products accounts on average for about one half of the effective dose equivalent from all natural sources of radiation. Radon contained in household water can transferred into room air as a result of agitation or heating. An indoor air concentration of 400 Bq/m3 is obtained if the radon concentration in household water is 4 kBq/L. A typical concentration of radon in ground water is about 1000 times lower than this concentration but sometime elevated concentrations of some kBq/L in ground water are reported. In this work a Liquid Scintillation counting system is used to obtain fast and accurate measurements of radon (222Rn) in water samples from Argolida, Greece.

Inflation and increasingly complex tax laws in the United States combined with rising national ism overseas have made the structuring of viable financing plans which meet the requirements of the various parties involved equally important in determining project success as the design of an efficient mining plan or selection of the optimal size equipment. Whereas the use of computerized analysis to design and evaluate the technical parameters of resource ventures is well accepted, computerized evaluation of the investment criteria (qualitative and quantitative) of the various parties to the project (mining firm, financial institution, product buyer, host government, etc.) is a more recent application which can make a material impact in strengthening project economics. By identifying the objectives of the parties and critically evaluating and testing them with the technical and economic/financial constraints on the project the sponsors can design a financial structure tailored to the attributes of the deposit. A myriad of new financial techniques have evolved for financing natural resource ventures, from "Commodity-backed bonds" to tax based limited partner- ships, but in every case the structure of the financing mechanism depends on carefully matching the parameters of the financial structure with the economic characteristics of the project and the objectives of its sponsors. This presentation outlines a methodlogy for computer based project evaluation in the design and structuring of stronger financial plans for natural resource ventures.

BHP Diamonds is developing Canada's first diamond mine, Ekati, located in the Northwest Territories (NWT). The mine is a joint venture between manager and operator BHP (51%), Dia Met Minerals (29%), Charles Fipke (10%) and Stuart Blusson (10%). BHP Diamonds is part of BHP Minerals: Production at Ekati began Oct. 14,1998. The mine is situated on a 3,450-km2 (853,000-acre) claim block located in the Lac de Gras region of the NWT (Fig. 1). It is about 300 km (185 miles) northeast of Yellowknife and 100 km (60 miles) south of the Arctic Circle. The seasonal winter ice road to Echo Bay's Lupin Mine passes along the eastern margin of the project area. This allows road access each year from mid-January to mid-April. For the remainder of the year, the project is accessible only by air.

The Deep Coal Seam Project is a multi- year, large-scale research and development effort between the Gas Research Institute (GRI) and Resource Enterprises, Inc. (REI). The project is being conducted at the Red Mountain Site, a multi-well test site located in the southeastern portion of the Piceance Basin near Collbran in Mesa County, Colorado. The project objective is to develop the drilling, reservoir evaluation, completion and production technology required to produce gas from a thick, deeply buried coal seam. To understand the parameters controlling gas production, project efforts are focused on the Cameo "D" coal reservoir which lies at a depth of about 1707 m (5,600 ft) at the test site. This paper overviews the drilling, testing, completion, and production techniques used on the 1, 2 and 3 Deep Seam wells and implications for resource development.

The Fort Cady in situ borate mining project involves recovery of boron from a mineral deposit located over 1400 feet below the surface. The resource recovery method is being developed using in situ mining technology employing weak acid solution injected directly into the ore body. As the acid contacts the calcium based ore (primarily natural colemanite), the contained borate values are digested as boric acid. This boric acid solution is then pumped to the surface by use of submersible pumps. At the surface the borate values are recovered as a finely divided solid white powder after a series of chemical reactions and precipitations resulting in the production of calcium borate. The refined product is then sold under the trade name CADYCAL 100.TM All environmental permits for up to a production rate of 90,000 tons per year have been obtained. These permits required an Environmental Impact study (EIS) for federal lands and an Environmental Impact Report (EIR) for the private portion of the property. Regulatory permitting required over 5 years to obtain all the various authorizations for this project. The ore body has an average thickness of 118 feet extending over 273 acres. At a production rate of 90,000 tons per year with only a 70 percent resource recovery allowance, in place reserves are sufficient to sustain production for over one hundred years.

The leaching of gold in ammoniacal solutions containing various oxidants in an autoclave has been investigated. Also studied are thermodynamic and kinetic aspects of the ammonia leaching of gold and silver. The variables studied included stirring speed, temperature, concentration of ammonia, ammonium, and various anions. Arrhenius activation energy values were found to be between 47.1 kJ/mol and 86.2 kJ/mol depending upon the kinds of oxidants used. An electrochemical reaction controlling mechanism has been proposed for the dissolution reaction. The leaching behavior of gold and silver from various ores in ammoniacal solutions containing various oxidants has also been investigated. The samples tested included sulfidic as well as carbonaceous refractory ores. The recoveries of gold and silver from these refractory ores were better than 96% within 2-3 hours of leaching time.

The demand for lithium may increase because of its potential use id lithium batteries and in the generation of electrical power by fusion. Therefore, lithium abundance in some United States oil-field brines was surveyed. Oil-field brines from numerous locations were found to contain more than 100 mg/l lithium and several exceeded 500 mg/l. An area of 25,000 km2, with a reservoir thickness of 60 m, an effective porosity of 5 percent, and a brine with a specific gravity of 1.2 containing 100 mg/l of lithium, contains about 0.75 x 106 tonnes (1 tonne = 1 metric ton = 1,000 kg) of lithium in 7.5 km3 of brine. It is postulated that the brines were enriched in lithium by lithium-rich spring water or lithium leached from volcanic rocks followed by evaporation sequences.

Between 2010 and 2018, Houston added more than 1 Million residents; the third largest rate of growth in the nation. With growth, the region faces new challenges with water supply, capacity of its wastewater system, and regional drainage. While tunnel construction has been limited in Houston since the Clean Water Program of 1990s, it is about to see a resurgence to improve water supply reliability and to reduce flood risks and sanitary sewer overflows. This paper examines the challenges with “going deep” below the built urban environment and related to high ground water; stiff, fissured clays; flowing silts and sands; faults; hazardous materials; and abandoned well fields.

In recent years a great number of papers have been presented at symposiums and have appeared in the literature relative to geologic prediction for rapid excavation and tunneling. Many of these papers describe research projects now underway to investigate tunnel site selection by remote sensing techniques, seismic holography, electro¬magnetic pulse sounding, optical scanning for structural features, and many other exotic geophysical techniques. While it is possible that this research will produce techniques that may prove to be very useful, it appears for the present at least, and perhaps for another decade, that there still will be no substitute for conventional exploration methods such as coring boring, geologic mapping, studies of existing wells, and proven geophysical techniques. Nevertheless, there is still room for tremendous improvement in the conventional techniques for geologic prediction in tunneling. These include: more rapid and accurately aligned coring borings drilled parallel to the tunnel alignment; improved geophysical surveys both prior and during construction; improved methods for predicting ground¬water inflows and water pressures, both of which can greatly influence the cost of driving tunnels. Geophysical techniques can also be ap¬plied to locate deeply incised glacial troughs or ancient buried stream channels that might cross the tunnel alignment. In the meantime, while some researchers continue their efforts to¬ward a breakthrough in new techniques for geologic prediction, it is recommended that other researchers direct their efforts toward sol¬ving specific problems such as accurately predicting ground-water conditions, determining locations of high geostatic stresses, and locations of major fault and shear zones.
