Introduction The Red Dog zinc/lead deposit in northwest Alaska is the second largest zinc deposit ever discovered. Being developed by Cominco Alaska, with startup scheduled for early 1990, it will ultimately be the largest zinc mine in the Western World. Table 1 shows the reserves of the deposit. Bob Baker, a local bush pilot, discovered Red Dog in 1968. The US Geological Survey assessed the find. But the Red Dog site had been withdrawn from staking by provisions in the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act of 1971 (ANCSA). Under the terms of ANCSA, the deposit was selected by the NANA Regional Corporation, one of 13 native corporations established by the Act. Then, in 1980, the US Congress confirmed this selection, in the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act. In 1982, Cominco and NANA reached an agreement that has led to the development of the mine. Under the agreement, Cominco leases the property from NANA, develops and operates the mine, and markets the concentrate produced. In return, NANA receives royalties and, after capital recovery, participates in the net proceeds from the operation. The Alaska State Government is also playing a role in the development of the mine. Under the auspices of the Alaska Industrial Development Authority (AIDA), the state will construct, own, and operate the DeLong Mountains Regional Transportation System. This consists of a 84-km (52¬mile) road from the minesite to the Chukchi Sea. Located here are the port facilities necessary to store and ship the annual concentrate production and receive the mine fuel and supplies. For using this transportation system, Cominco will pay an annual toll fee. Over the anticipated 50 year life of the operation, the fee will provide a 6.5% return to the State of Alaska. In late 1986, Cominco's Board of Directors approved the Red Dog project. And, during the summer of 1987, road construction began. In February 1988, initial stripping began at the ore body and construction started at the millsite. Project setting The project site is approximately 1000 km (600 miles) northwest of Anchorage, 84 km (52 miles) east of tidewater on the Chukchi Sea, and 192 km (120 miles) north of the Arctic Circle (Fig. 1). The countryside consists of low, rolling hills that lead into mountains north and east of the deposit. The vegetation is typical tundra mat. And the site is in an area of permafrost. However, the permafrost is relatively warm and some areas have been found to be thawed. Examples would be creek bottoms and the site of the main waste dump.

The Goldstrike autoclave plant is designed for the pressure oxidation of 1363 t/d (1500 stpd) of refractory gold ore. The plant was commissioned in early February 1990 over a one week period - an unusually short period for a plant of this complexity. The rapid plant start-up is attributed to certain detailed design and control aspects of the plant. This paper discusses key features of the autoclave plant with emphasis on the design of the splash/flash system of heat recovery and the control systems. Commissioning and plant operations over the first three months are reviewed.

The cost of performing equipment maintenance is an increasingly significant component in the total operating cost of today's capital-intensive, large-scale mining operations. Because of the interdependence o f equipment maintenance on other functional areas of the minesite, an integrated approach to the monitoring and control of maintenance costs is essential. An important element of the introduction of computer-based systems in a mine is the acceptance of the systems by the users. The development history and major features of a minesite-developed system, which emphasises the user's importance, is described. The system outlined is designed to provide information for decision-making to the place where the company's maintenance money is actually spent - on the shop floor.

Experiments have been carried out to determine the efficacy of bubble column flocculation. An acid-base neutralization method was used to determine the mixing time in a 0.064 m x l.5 m bubble column equipped with a Mott porous sparger. The mixing times decreased as the tracer injection point approached the gas sparger. Preliminary flocculation experiments on two clay samples were carried out. The effects of frother addition and air flow rate are presented and discussed.

In 1993 Ispat Inland Mining Company began mining its Laurentian ore reserve, which has six distinct ore types that are extremely variable. Initially batch processing was necessary to optimize mining equipment utilization. The variability as found in the ground was compensated for in plant operation, which proved ineffective. When the last of the six ore types was introduced in 1997, production, quality, and cost were seriously impacted. In-pit blending was the solution developed by the process management team to provide the plant feed required to economically process all six ore types in the Laurentian reserve.

The mining sector, which is important in terms of raw-material and energy supply, is seen as a sector with high number of fatal accidents compared to other sectors. In this century of heightened occupational health and safety awareness, it is important to review past accident statistics and analyze current deficiencies using the information in inventory. Although there are many studies assessing occupational accidents occurring in the mining sector, there are few studies using the nonparametric linear programming method. There are many input and output parameters related to occupational health and safety. Nonparametric linear programming method has been found to be useful because it provides simultaneous evaluation of these input-output parameters, does not require functional form in the analyses and provides guidance on the improvement needed by the related parameter. However, this method analyzes data using a single period of time and does not take into account any changes in efficiency over time. In the literature, there is no study in which the change of occupational accidents occurring in mining and even other sectors over time is examined and the Malmquist total factor productivity index (MPI) is used. Within the scope of the present study, the aim was to examine the change of occupational accidents occurring in Western Lignite Corp. in Turkey, where underground and surface production methods are applied, between 2005 and 2018. It is the first time MPI is used to examine the change of occupational accidents over time. The DEAP 2.1 computer program written by Coelli [1] was used in the solution of the models [2].

Introduction Minicomputers have been gaining acceptance in mining. Low cost interactive processing and plotting can now be controlled by geologists or engineers needing rapid solutions and specialized mining software in formats that allow noncomputer personnel to readily interact with computer processes. User-oriented programs maximize the use of interactive display features and graphics, as shown by the HP9845 minicomputer, a unit with portability, processing power, graphics capabilities, capacity, and peripherals such as plotters, digitizers, disk drives, and printers. Application Coal exploration projects require that much effort be spent determining coal volumes within trial pit limits. This determines a prospect's viability and potential. Adapting volume calculations to a computer has been limited, since it was difficult to create reasonable representations of complex coal seam geometry with a digital process. So many of the simple mechanical procedures needed to produce pit reserves are still performed manually by geologists and engineers. But with new minicomputers and their interactive graphics, it is now practical to accurately model complex structures without tedious calculations. GEOSEM (Geomin Seam Oriented Exploration System) is a computer system designed to analyze coal prospects. The system shows how a coal prospect, with complex geology, can be quickly analyzed, modeled, displayed, and evaluated for mineable reserves. Its interactive graphics allow rapid visual presentation of data, high-speed tabular reports, and precision plotting. The system is most effective when used by a geologist or engineer who selects the required operations and specifies relevant parameters via screen and keyboard interaction. Rolling Hills The Rolling Hills prospect represents a typical Rocky Mountain coal deposit. Enough geological interpretation has been done to show a complex system of block faulting with coal seams following synclines of stratified lithologies. With the completion of initial drill hole exploration, questions arose concerning coal volumes and strip ratios involved with various pit limits. Quality information had been gathered on the coal intercepts. It was decided that coal vol¬umes and pit designs were of prime importance. The objective was to enter and display data, create a computer model based on interpretation, develop pit designs, compute seam/ waste volumes, and report various contents. The project, begun by entering data in the GEOSEM system, was completed in several days. Data Entry For modeling, the prime information was seam identity and drill hole intercept. Other information-rock type, Btu rating, and percent of ash, sulfur, and moisture-was also available. It, too, was entered into the data base through the computer keyboard and then reported, verified, and corrected. Various reports can be produced, according to user specified sort parameters. For example, from an analysis of available data, only 14 intercepts could be found with Btu value greater than 8000 and sulfur content less than 0.4%. The sort option can also be used prior to entry into the analysis routines. Data Analysis Though the objective was to create a seam model and compute reserves, it became necessary to project quality information into unsampled areas. Statistical analysis was then war-ranted. A typical analysis correlated the lack of relationship between percentage of ash and Btu. Although histograms were also produced, these typified a lack of samples and "ragged" distributions. A geostatistical analysis was also applied, showing the results of computing a 2-D variogram on the largest coal seam. Results showed an average range of 18 m, with a poorly defined variogram. Data Display and Drafting Scaled plans and sections were required so seam locations could be compared to hand drawn interpretations and drill coordinates verified. At the same time, topography could be interpolated from collar elevations to determine whether surface control points were needed for better definition. In addition, a new set of 50 final-scale drawings were required, showing new drilling information. By using the computer screen as a "scratch pad" device, various sections were displayed and then plotted on a drum plotter at the desired scale for overlay on original sections. The pandemic emergency is forcing transit agencies to define strategies allowing social distancing, which are more challenging in underground interchange stations in crowded downtown cores. Toronto Transit Commission’s (TTC’s) Bloor-Yonge Station Capacity Improvement Project in Toronto was approved to meet increasing demand and represents an opportunity to fight COVID-19. This paper discusses cost-effective solutions in expanding the cut-and-cover station box over the existing Toronto Subway Line 2 and connecting it through ventilation openings in the cast-iron tunnel liner. Potential uplift risks and structural damage due to minimal vertical clearance were analyzed via three-dimensional finite element analyses with advanced constitutive laws to simulate the multi-stage construction process. Based on the simulation results, a series of countermeasures, including excavation support systems, king posts, ground-consolidations, and liner reinforcements were integrated into comprehensive design options to ensure the serviceability and structural integrity of the subway tunnels.

INTRODUCTION Deformation measurements are some of the simplest and most useful measurements that can be made by the mining/rock mechanics engineer in assessing the sta¬bility of openings in rock. A number of tools and tech¬niques are presently available. This chapter will de¬scribe the most common instruments, their application, and present the equations needed for data reduction. MECHANICAL STRAIN GAGE Description of Instrument A mechanical strain gage of the Whittemore type shown in Fig. I is a useful instrument for measuring deformations of pillars, sidewalls, and roofs of under¬ground mines. Measurement gage lengths typically range from 51 to 254 mm (2 to 10 in.), and the dial indicator reads to 0.0025 mm (0.0001 in.). The instru¬ment measures the deformation between precision gage points which are anchored in the rock. The anchor points are typically grouted in small holes drilled 12.5 mm (1/2 in.) or so deep into the rock. Strain a is calculated from the measured deformation AL with the equation [ ] where L is gage length. A necessary accessory for the instrument is a master bar normally made from invar steel having a low co¬efficient of thermal expansion. This bar allows one to check the instrument for changes in the mechanical zero point and to correct for temperature effects on the measuring instrument. The instrument is available from Soiltest, Inc. for a cost of approximately $340; the cost of the master bar is approximately $55; and nonreusable brass inserts which are anchored in the rock are nominally priced at $0.27 each. All prices are for 1978. Applications Two classes of applications may be considered, one where only one measurement direction is involved and the second where three measurement directions are em¬ployed. Applications where only one measurement di¬rection is necessary include: monitoring crack or frac¬ture separation or shear movement with anchor points on opposite sides of the discontinuity; measurement of vertical strain in a pillar or sidewall; and measurement of steel support deformations with anchors in the steel members. The more general application involves a strain ro¬sette consisting of three measurement directions which for convenience are oriented 1.04 rad (60°) apart to form an equilateral triangle as shown in Fig. 2. A regional investigation to find large supplies of potable ground water was carried out at elevations exceeding 12,000 feet above sea level on the Bolivian Altiplano. The program marked the first application of modern ground water search and development technology in the region, and ended a history of unsuccessful exploration efforts to locate important supplies of fresh water from underground sources. Oruro, a population center of 90,000 inhabitants, and its primary supporting industry - mining, both derived major direct benefit from the results of this program.

Mineral exploration has evolved into a sophisticated science which uses powerful scientific tools to make mineral discoveries. In addition to their usefulness in performing mineral exploration, these scientific tools can assist the exploration geologist in assessing environmental conditions at exploration sites. During exploration, environmental data acquisition should focus on data collection efforts which can be easily integrated into exploration activities, and should provide information needed for pre-feasibility and preliminary engineering design studies. Environmental studies performed during exploration should also include an environmental liabilities audit and a fatal flaw analysis to assess whether there are any unresolvable environmental or regulatory issues affecting the project. Performing extensive environmental baseline studies during exploration and project evaluation is neither necessary nor recommended. This paper describes opportunities to integrate environmental data collection with mineral exploration activities. This paper also examines how political and communication issues can affect the outcome of permitting efforts, and recommends a strategy to improve the industry's ability to respond to political challenges and to communicate with the public. This strategy integrates technical and political issues, and implements programs to convince the public of the mining industry's technological achievements and its commitment to resource stewardship and environmental protection.

According to Darcy?s law, the rate of filtration should increase with increasing pressure drop across a filter cake. In centrifugal filtration, the driving pressure is created by the centrifugal forces applied in the free water on the surface of a filter cake. However, the pressure drop can become negative when the free water surface disappears, which makes it difficult to achieve low cake moistures. In hyperbaric centrifugal filtration, this problem is overcome using air pressure to restore the pressure differential. In the present work, various mineral and coal fines have been subjected to hyperbaric centrifugal filtration tests. The laboratory tests show that the moistures of various mineral fines, such as copper and zinc concentrates, phosphate, talc, kaolin clay, and precipitated calcium carbonate, can be reduced substantially below that achieved by conventional centrifuges. Similar promising results have also been obtained with various coal fines in laboratory and pilot-scale test programs and in full-scale plant demonstrations.

Restrictions on fugitive emissions and crushing operations continue to get tighter. Although fugitive dust control in the gold mining industry has historically been difficult, there are now several options that can make dust control both effective and efficient. Using new technology, mine operators can now design and maintain a dust control program that can reduce product losses, decrease equipment failure, cut cleaning costs, and meet air quality compliance standards as well as provide a better working environment. This paper discusses the sources of fugitive emissions related to the gold mining and crushing operations and describes effective new control methods.

Underground room-and-pillar mining operations in the Warrior Coal Field in Alabama frequently suffer instability due to soft floor and thinly-laminated immediate roof. The investigation covered by this paper concerns a mine that was experiencing ground-control problems with weak floor conditions. Four hundred ft above the presently producing seam, another seam has been mined out. Several roof falls occurred locally, and as much as two ft of floor heaves have been experienced. The paper presents the results of comprehensive analysis conducted on floor heave, roof sagging, and the influence of the mined-out seam using instrumentation and numerical analysis.

Since the inception of the Ashton (formerly Kalumburu) Joint Venture in 1972 the parties have expended $24 million in exploration for diamonds in the Kimberley region. This has resulted in the discovery of the currently subeconomic Ellendale deposits in 1976/77 and the economic Argyle - Smoke Creek Deposits in 1979/80. In addition to Argyle and Ellendale, some 90 kimberlitic and lamproitic bodies have been discovered grouped broadly into three provinces, on the west, east and north margins of the Kimberley block. These bodies range in size from dyke-like features less than 1. m (3 ft) in width to pipes with a surface area of 128 ha (316 acres). The bodies with larger surface area are volcanic crater deposits, infilled with air-fall and water deposited tuffs and epiclastic sediments. Diamond content ranges from trace to economic concentrations. The exploration discoveries were facilitated by early recognition that the petrography, mineralogy and chemistry of the diatremes varied from the classical kimberlites of Kimberley, South Africa, to unusual more highly fractionated, alkaline, silicic varieties having affinities with leucitelamproite. Indirect methods of exploration were used, primary reconnaissance work being stream gravel sampling for kimberlitic indicator minerals. Evaluation showed Ellendale diamonds are 90% gem and near gem, but the low grades and tonnage render the deposits unpayable at today's diamond prices. After discovery in late 1979 and completion of a feasibility study by the end of 1982, evaluation studies proved Argyle to be economic. Alluvial diamond mining commenced in 1983 producing 6.2 million carats (Mct) that year, 60% being of industrial quality. Open-pit mining of the AK1 lamproite should start in 1985/1986 at a rate of 3 million t/a (33 million stpy) and produce 25 Mct/a, making this mine, and Australia, the world's largest producer of diamonds by weight. The revenue from diamond deposits is a function of the grade and the value of the diamonds. The grade is the product of the frequency of occurrence of the diamonds (stone density) and the mean stone size; the value of the stones is strongly related to their size distribution. During evaluation of the West Australian deposits, the diamond distribution was found to vary markedly in stone density and stone size. These variations corresponded with changes in the rock type hosting the mineralization. As a consequence, geological mapping of individual lamproites within the multiple vents and careful monitoring of the diamond distribution became an important part of the evaluation work. Similar variations in stone size and frequency were found to accord with separate alluvial terraces and fan gravels derived by erosion from the Argyle AM lamproite.

Caterpillar has led the way for sound reduction in off highway trucks (OHT) used for mining. In 2000 Caterpillar introduced the 793CXQ sound reduction OHT (Figure 4) to meet local noise level demands in the Hunter Valley near Sydney, Australia. The sound level of the mining equipment in the Hunter Valley is being reduced to pre-serve the quality of life for the residents of the area. To meet the levels established required a major redesign of the 793C, as a result the sound power level was reduced by 9 dB (A), which is a less than 1/8the original sound level.

Even with conservative mine planning, rib instability can progress from a nuisance to a major safety hazard. This Bureau of Mines paper examines the mechanisms of progressive rib failure in high mine openings and discusses techniques to control rib slabbing. A field test site in a longwall mine was instrumented to investigate rib behavior during mining. While data analysis showed minor pillar dilation. sporadic zones of progressive rib instability were detected that culminated in eventual rib failure. The failure occurred despite conservative pillar dimensions and shallow depth. Models were used to demonstrate the mechanisms of rib failure and then evaluate the influence of support and other mine-related parameters on rib behavior.

SUMMARY In August 1986, TRANSMANCHE LINK, a joint venture comprising the 10 companies who initially promoted the project, signed a contract with EUROTUNNEL for the design, construction and commissioning of the TRANSMANCHE fixed link for an amount of 4,5 billion dollars. On the French side, the work consists of digging three, 19km. long tunnels, of which almost 16 kms. are under the sea, up to the meeting point with the Tunnel works carried out by the British.. The tunnels are bored through chalk by 5 tunnelling machines, starting from one intermediate point at Sangatte near the coast: - Landward, they are drilled trough permeable strata of white and grey chalk. - Seaward, mainly through relatively impermeable chalk marl, but with the presence of water in faulted zones, or in grey chalk.

"INTRODUCTION Foam, unless intentionally created, in any industrial process presents operational problems, or at a minimum, is a nuisance. Some foam problems are unique to a given industry and others are common across many industries. A few problems foam presents to any particular industry are: (a) Poor Housekeeping, (b) Environmental impact, (c) Safety Hazards, (d) Slower Production Rates and, (e) Reduced quality of the end product. Defoamers address these issues. Sadly, the assumption in most industries is all defoamers are alike. In reality, a lot of chemistry is involved in the manufacture of even the simplest defoamer sold today and rarely are any two defoamers “just alike”. Today’s defoamers can include polymer chemistry, fatty esters, alkoxylated alcohols, silicone chemistry, silicone surfactants, ethoxylated and propoxylated block polymers, and a tremendous amount of emulsion chemistry just to name a few. This paper will discuss the various types of defoamers, defoaming mechanisms, the advantages and disadvantages of defoamer selections, and how to choose the proper defoamer for your application. Before a discussion of defoamer can be brought about, foam generation and composition must be discussed. WHAT IS FOAM? Foam is a colloidal suspension of a gas dispersed in a liquid. Most often foam consists of air dispersed in water. If a stream of air is introduced into a liquid, the bubbles produced assume a spherical shape. As the density of the bubble is less than the liquid the bubble rises. When the individual bubbles reach and pass through a surfactant free liquid they collapse. Air from the bubble dissipates and the liquid previously surrounding the bubble flows back.It should be noted a pure liquid will not foam. In the case of air dispersed in water a surfactant is necessary to make the water support a stable foam. A surfactant is a term used to describe a surface active agent; a compound with a hydrophilic end and a hydrophobic end on the same molecule."
