Interactions of carbonaceous materials with liquid Fe-C melts have been investigated experimentally by determining the volatile yield due to rapid devolatilization (Flash Pyrolysis) and rates of dissolution at temperatures ranging from 1623 to 1873 K. The volatile yield increased with increasing the temperature. The comparison of results of different types of carbonaceous materials was possible by expressing the volatile yield in terms of Enhancement Factor, fE. The rates of dissolution of spectroscopic graphite and an industrial coke seemed to obey the correlation for natural convection under turbulent conditions. The experimental data for the graphite suggested that the rate of dissolution was controlled by the mass-transfer in the liquid boundary layer adjacent to the solid sample. The value for the empirical parameter correlating the dissolution coefficient and the operating variables was found to be 0.19 which was close to that reported in the literature. The comparison of the results obtained for the coke samples with those for the graphite revealed that the impurities and the porosity of the samples can effect the dissolution rates.

This paper investigates a potential method for arsenic removal from copper concentrates using hypochlorite leaching. The problems concerning pyrometallurgical processing of copper concentrates with high arsenic contents are discussed. A possible solution to the problem by leaching of natural enargite crystals with sodium hypochlorite under alkaline oxidizing conditions, with enargite converted into crystalline CuO and the soluble arsenic forming AsO43-, was experimentally investigated and results are presented. Kinetic parameters were calculated for enargite leaching, using a model-free approach. Advanced isoconversional methods were used to investigate the dependence of activation energy (Ea) on reaction rate (a). Complying with respirable dust standards is presently a critical problem for many longwall faces equipped with double drum shearers. Results are presented of research performed to increase the quantity and optimize the distribution of the water supplied to the shearer drums to control the shearer operator dust exposure. The effect on the total respirable dust produced by the shearer was also examined. During the research effort, a simple and inexpensive manually controlled valve system was designed and implemented on a shearer to distribute the water supplied to the shearer drums. Research showed that increases in water quantities are beneficial but associated pressure increases may induce respirable dust boilover negating potential advantages. Other essential parameters such as location of shearer operator, outside spray orientation and air quantity were considered in the evaluation.

This report describes work performed for the Bureau of Mines to evaluate available portable instruments for their effectiveness in detecting and locating damaged metallic shields in Types SHD and SHC cables. A second phase of the program is also covered wherein several instruments of a type which show promise are purchased for modification and testing to verify their performance.

Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) spectroscopy, combined with cyclovoltammetry, has been successfully used to study the interactions between ethyl xanthate, heptyl xanthate, dithio-phosphate and propyl trithiocarbonate flotation collectors and a gold surface. Large, easily measurable responses have been obtained in the potential areas where the thiol collectors are known to interact with gold. The four collector types lead to differing SPR maximum values, with longer alkyl chains resulting in higher SPR responses, and the trithiocarbonate leading to the highest response values. The SPR responses differ considerably from the current density response at very anodic and cathodic potentials. There are indications that thiols might still be adsorbed at potentials as low as-300 mV (vs SHE). The blasting performances identified above are considered to be the most practical ones for judging the effectiveness of a design combining explosives / rock / drill pattern. In a total blast design process, productivity relates closely to both fragmentation and heave / displacement of muck. In cast blasting, the more overburden displaced by explosives, the less blasted material there is left to be removed with mechanical equipment such as draglines or trucks. For wall protection and dilution control, estimates of the maximum extent of cracks / damage generated in situ due to blasting will help determine the location for drilling and loading perimeter blastholes.

The Bagdad-Chase copper-gold mine south of Ludlow, Calif., was visited by an engineer of the Bureau of Mines in July 1955 to determine the mine's status of activity and to obtain a bulk sample for metallurgical testing. The deposit was discovered in 1903 and has been worked intermittently. It has a production record of about 273,000 tons of ore. The first production of about 150,000 tons was treated in a cyanide plant 2 miles west of Barstow, Calif. The extraction of gold was not satisfactory because of the presence of copper minerals. Since 1910 the ore has been shipped to various smelters in Arizona and California for use as a flux.

This paper expands on the ZECA (Zero Emission Coal Alliance) technology, which is aimed at making coal a sustainable source of clean energy in the near future. The technology proposed immediate capture of carbon dioxide and other pollutants upon generation, thus alleviating their negative effects in the Earth’s atmosphere. ZECA proposes using chemical energy of coal to produce hydrogen; the latter is then used to produce electricity via fuel cells or Hyrogen-Oxygen turbines. In this study, a chemical engineering package, AspenPlus 12.1, is used to simulate the reactor (reformer) in which hydrogen is produced from methane water and lime as part of the zero emission power plant. Thermodynamic conditions, pressure and temperature, are optimized with respect to molar hydrogen production. Under the proposed conditions, molar conversion efficiency, carbon to hydrogen, of 95% is achieved. Further studies are required to model the complete power plant and to optimize it for efficiency.

The Wharf Resources mine, located in the Bald Mountain Mining District approximately 6.4 km (4miles) west of Lead, South Dakota, has operated a surface gold and silver mine and heap leaching processing facility since 1983. Wharf Resources intends to mine and process gold and silver ore from the Wharf Expansion area which is located on the eastern flank of the currently permitted Foley Ridge Mine. The Trojan Pit for the Wharf Expansion area was initially designed with an overall highwall slope angle of 45o. During mine permit presubmission meetings with personnel from the SD Department of Environment and Natural Resources (SD DENR), the question arose as to whether a detailed slope stability analysis of the proposed Trojan Pit highwalls was completed to justify the 45o slope. Wharf’s response was that the highwall design was based, in part, upon studies completed in1987 on the Annie Creek and Foley Ridge Mines; and, in part, upon subsequent slope stability analyses conducted by Wharf mine personnel through 1996. It was suggested by the SD DENR that the stability study be updated to reflect structural geological conditions in the Wharf Expansion area.

Mining is recognised as being one of the most dangerous industries in the world due to the difficult working conditions. Working in such hazardous circumstances in an underground mine often results in a variety of accidents. The working conditions at Kazakhstan’s underground mines have deteriorated owing to a lack of a risk-reduction plan and methodology. This paper evaluates different underground mines in Kazakhstan and demonstrates the employed mining method and the observed failure modes. Risk assessment has long been recognised as a valuable technique for preventing accidents. In the underground mining sector, risk assessment tools play an important role in avoiding work-related accidents. However, geotechnical uncertainty is a significant source of severe incidents like stress-induced roof collapse, wedge failure, seismicity etc, which result in human and financial losses. A geotechnical risk assessment performed early in the mine design process might assist justify a different mine design component, such as different support systems for a dangerous location within the mine openings during mining. The goal of this research is to create a damage/failure database aiming at the development of a geomechanical risk assessment methodology. This work identifies a thematic structure linked to risk assessment and management for the examined Kazakhstan mining sector. As part of the developed database, the dominant modes of failure within the Kazakhstan underground mining conditions were investigated. The study will provide opportunities to establish future research objectives for Kazakhstan’s mining industry where there are significant gaps between state-of-the-art research and mining operations in practice.

The area around Big Bell was actively explored and sporadically mined for gold from 1904 onwards. The lease was named Big Bell in 1913. The property became established as a major mining centre with the development of the Big Bell underground mine in 1936. Mining operations commenced in late 1937 and ceased in January 1955, after milling 5.56 million tonnes of ore and producing nearly 21 tonnes of gold. In 1969 Australian Consolidated Minerals Ltd (A.C.M.) acquired the deposit then explored it alone and in joint venture until the current joint venture agreement with a subsidiary of Placer Pacific Limited (PPL) was negotiated in 1984. Following exploration and evaluation of near surface mineralisation, and a reassessment of the remnant pillars underground, the concept of a large open pit in conjunction with an underground mine evolved. The feasibility study was completed in October 1987, and the decision to go ahead was formally announced on 2nd December 1987. Placer Dome Technical Services Ltd were contracted to be the Project Managers, commencing construction on site early in January 1988 and handing the plant over to the operators 13 months later. The capital cost of the project at handover was estimated to be $133 million. The operating team commenced pre-production stripping of the open pit on 1st May 1988. By 31st January 1989 almost 16.0 million tonnes had been stripped and 350,000 tonnes of ore stockpiled.

The CTRL London Tunnels The Channel Tunnel Rail Link (CTRL) London Tunnels comprise 36km of internal diameter bores that were driven by Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs). The tunnels were constructed between the autumn of 2002 and the spring of 2004. The permanent works also included the 1.1 km long station box at Stratford, five ventilation shafts of depths between 30 and 54 m, 29 cross passages and various large diameter sprayed concrete lined connecting tunnels. A preliminary program dated April 25, 1974, was prepared for Development Engineering, Inc. (DEI) on research and development. for laboratory, field and other engineering studies on the disposal of retorted oil shale. This program was revised and published as a final document dated December 17, 1974. The document included discussions on the peculiarities of retorted shale materials to be investigated and discussions of the various laboratory and field tests which would need to be conducted to define their physical and chemical properties. The proposed research and development program was divided into eight work phases as follows: I Program Development. II Exploratory Laboratory Tests on Old U.S.B.M. Retorted Shale. III Laboratory Tests on Pilot Plant Retorted Shales, IV Laboratory Tests on Retorted Shale from the Semi-Works Plant, Field, Test Plots and Ponds. V Field Compaction Tests. Gold and Silver bearing epithermal veins of the Golden Cross deposit are hosted in Miocene and Pliocene calc-alkaline volcanics occurring 8 km northwest of Waihi at the southern extent of the Coromandel Peninsula, North Island, New Zealand. Veining occurred during a period of hydrothermal activity that began early to late Pliocene, and possibly continued into the Pleistocene.   Field relations and petrographic relationships reveal that multiple generations of FeS2 occur in the Golden Cross region, with FeS2 occurring in all nine rock types recognised at Golden Cross. The variability of FeS2 morphology was investigated by preparation of high purity FeS2 separates, and grain counting. Marcasite is the dominant FeS2 phase at Golden Cross, and along with pyrite is shown to have a systematic habit variation. Pyrite shows a sequence from cubes through octahedra to pyritohedra to dendritic growth. This pyrite sequence conforms to an experimentally determined sequence. The parallel sequence for marcasite at Golden Cross is from tabular through bladed aggregates to euhedral miscellaneous marcasite morphologies. The FeS2 sequences observed are believed to be due to increasing temperature, and perhaps also increasing FeS2-oversaturation and fluid flow.

Radioactivity, the property of radium that led to its isolation more than 30 years ago, is the characteristic that makes it of value in the treatment of disease. Tyler3 gives the following brief history of the investigation: The way to the discovery of radium was opened in 1895 by Rontgen, who found that the glow from a Crooke's tube contained penetrating rays, which .he called X rays. Prof. Henri Bequerel, while investigating the effect of various phosphor¬ escent substances, found that uranium salts produced photographic impressions even when enveloped with opaque substances. To Marie Sklovouski, a young Polish student, who later became Madame Curie, Professor Bacquerel delegated the task of learning how and why uranium possessed power to emit these peculiar rays, which he had proved to be electrical in character. Madam Curie, examining by electri¬ cal methods the radioactivity of a large number of minerals containing uranium and thorium, discovered that some specimens of pitchblende had about four times the activity of the metal uranium; that chalcolite, the crystallized phosphate of copper and uranium, was twice as active as uranium; that autunite, a phosphate of calcium and uranium, was quite as active as the same weight of pure uranium. In order to check these discoveries, she prepared chalcolite artificially, starting with pure products, but found that this artificial chalcolite had only the acti¬ vity represented by its composition, or, roughly, 40 per cent of the activity of uranium. This led to the conclusion that there was some element or substance in the residue from uranium minerals that possesses a high degree of activity. After an exhaustive chemical investigation of pitchblende from Joachimsthal, she found that this mineral contained not only uranium but also another radioactive sub¬ stance, to which she gave the name of polonium, in honor of her native land. Later in 1898, Monsieur and Madame Curie found still another element, which, when brought to a state of concentration, was several million times as active as uranium, and to this was given the name of radium. Debierne afterwards found a fifth radio¬ active substance, actinium; and in 1906 Boltwood isolated the metal ionium. Strict¬ ly pure radium chloride was first produced in 1902. The first radium was produced commercially from the uranium residues obtained from the mines of Joachimsthal, Bohemia. Tyler calls to attention that, as the ores were a government monopoly, search was begun at once for sources in other parts of the world. As a result, radium-containing ores have been found in about 10 countries.

"A shallow till sampling program was completed on a 1 km grid over the St . George Batholith in southern New Brunswick. The ""B"" soil horizon was analyzed for Cu, Pb, Zn, Ag, Co, Mo, U and Sb and the heavy minerals from the ""C"" soil horizon were analyzed for W, Sn and A u. The results delineated four of five recorded W occurrences, three of four recorded Mo occurrences, all recorded Cu occurrences and one recorded Au occurrence. The results indicate that shallow till sampling in conjunction with bedrock and Quaternary mapping can inexpensively define exploration targets in terrain similar to that underlain by the St. George Batholith.A similar program was carried out in eastern Ontario involving the analysis of four separates from the till, the ""8"" soil horizon, the -50 mesh fraction, the -250 mesh and the heavy mineral fraction of the ""C"" soil horizon and humus. Also sampling was carried out near known gold occurrences at closer spacings. Regionally, anomalous results from all sample media clearly defined a large auriferous shear zone and associated splays. Over one known showing all media clearly defined the showing and a secondary zone. On the regional scale the heavy mineral fraction gave the best anomaly definition and contrast, but the -250 mesh fraction was found to be the most cost effective for defining exploration targets. For detailed surveys, humus was found to be cost-effective."

In underground mining operations, the over- riding issue has to be protection of worker health and safety. The employees underground, making a living in a dangerous occupation, know these are major issues. These men bargain their lives and health on the presumption that the operating management knows its business, and they, the underground employees, can pursue their occupation with the assurance that management has provided a safe and healthy ambient underground environment. When management assumes the mantle of protection of underground workers, it has to be positive that qualified engineers have designed the project, and that capable operating personnel are in charge and always available. Those persons with these responsibilities must be knowledgeable in the engineering and occupational health aspects of sine ventilation. The ultimate function of a mine ventilation system is to provide a comfortable, healthy and safe ambient environment for the underground workers. The attainment of these objectives has been complicated with the increased application of electrical equipment and diesel-powered mechanized mining equipment underground (discharging toxic diesel emissions); increased production rates with the attendant increased production of airborne dust; and mine development in increasingly hostile mineral formations containing combustible strata gases, radon gas emissions, along with high heat and humidity. In general, the modern mechanization of present mining operations has resulted in a sore complex set of problems for the engineer planning the underground ambient environment.

The unmanned driving technology in open pit coalmines is an important technology that relies on innovation to drive the development of the open pit coal mining industry in China’s transformation of growth drivers and industrial structure upgrading. It is an important path to solve the shortage of mine truck drivers in the future mining, an important way to improve the working environment of open pit mining personnel, and an important foundation for achieving flexible production capacity in open pit mining to cooperate with the coordinated development of new energy. The communication rules at intersections are key to ensuring the safety and efficiency of unmanned driving in open pit coalmines. This paper proposes a collaborative traffic strategy between unmanned trucks for the single bucket unmanned truck intermittent process system in open pit coalmines. Based on the gap theory, this paper analyses the conflict characteristics and establishes a coordinated traffic strategy for the common intersection and merging conflicts of unmanned truck trucks in open pit coalmines, A multi-agent system simulation platform was built to evaluate the coordinated traffic efficiency under different initial average gap sizes of vehicles, with intersection traffic density, vehicle speed, and gap changes as key indicators. The results show that under the simulation conditions of this article, when the initial average gap of vehicles reaches three (four) times or more of the safe distance, the coordinated traffic performance of intersection conflicts (merging conflicts) is better, and the traffic capacity of intersections is close to the traffic capacity without conflicts.

Le concept du forage horizontal a été développé voilà de nombreuses années. Différents types de plate-formes permettant le forage horizontal depuis une cheminée ont été conçus par divers manufacturiers ou opérateurs miniers. Entre autres, on connaît bien la griffe de montage Alimak à laquelle peut être fixée une plat-forme sur laquelle est montée une foreuse. En 1992, Ross-Finlay a développé sa propre plate-forme de forage qui à notre opinion améliore la flexibilité du concept du forage horizontal, en augmente la productivité et en diminue le coût d?ensemble tout en assurant une sécurité accrue des travailleurs. Tel que montré à la figure 1, la plate-forme employée à la Mine Kiena est composée d?un toit de protection contre les chutes d?objets et de deux passerelles de forage de forme carrée. Le toit et les passerelles sont fixées à une structure de 6.5 m de longueur équipée de deux assemblages de rouleaux (non montrés à la figure) permettant de faire glisser l?ensemble sur des rails Alimak. L?angle du toit et des passerelles peut être ajusté pour des cheminées dont le pendage varie de 65 degrés à 85 degrés.
