For a number of years prior to the world war, the firm of Geo. H. Thacher & Co., of Albany, N. Y., was engaged in the manufacture of marine and other gray-iron castings. At the outbreak of the war the firm decided to specialize in the manufacture of propeller wheels. It attacked the problem, therefore, from a foundry point of view, seeking to produce a casting that would be so accurate that no subsequent machining would be required on the blades, also from the point of view of the ship builder. There were two general methods of manufacture, the shortcomings of which have been freely acknowledged. In the sweep method, the nowel, or bottom half-mold, for each blade is swept up by a spindle beam and pitch race, while the top half-mold for each blade is built up individually. In the pattern method one individual blade, with the hub or hub portion, is mounted on a spindle and the individual blade mold formed, the pattern is then rotated on the spindle to the position for the next blade, etc. In rare cases wheels were made from a solid pattern. Owing to the cost of the pattern, its failure in many instances to be correctly made, and (when made of wood) its early and sure distortion the disadvantage of this pratctice is obvious, while metal patterns in most instances were prohibitive in cost. In these methods both green-sand and loam molding was practiced. The casting produced by either method can be considered only as a blank from which the propeller must be machined. The back surface of each blade must be chipped to the templet and through this procedure chipped to such accuracy as will be required for a static balance. Inasmuch as the work done by the machine tool is confined to the driving face of the blades, not only is perfection most difficult, but corrosion will be greater because of the removal of the dense skin of the casting and the local strains set up by the pneumatic tool in chipping. To produce a finished 9-ft. propeller for a Navy destroyer required from 8 to 21 days of foundry work and about the same length of time for the machining. Through the use of the Thacher process, only as many hours are required, besides it is possible to produce a finished casting in perfect conformity with any particular propeller-wheel design.

A new method for obtaining equilibrium vaporization ratios (K-values) for reservoir fluids has been developed and tested. By application of the method, complex experimental measurements of liquid and vapor phase compositions are eliminated. This simplified technique reduces the cost of experimental equilibrium-ratio data for reservoir studies of condensates and volatile crude-oil systems. The method is designed for systems of constant composition and, therefore, is best suited for depletion studies where compositional changes at high pressures are minor. The basic data required, in addition to the composition of the initial reservoir fluid, are the relative vapor-liquid volumes and densities at reservoir temperature and variom reservoir pressures. Tests demonstrated that the method predicts equilibrium ratios accurately for condensates. A single test on a crude oil was not conclusive; further testing will be necessary before the accuracy of the method can be determined for crude-oil systems. In addition to determining equilibrium ratios, the calculation method provides information on the physical properties of the "plus" component in the vapor and liquid phases. The "plus" component is that mixture of components heavier than the least volatile fraction analyzed. This information is useful in studies of both natural depletion and cycling operations for condensate reservoirs where the heptanes-plus component in the gas phase is produced from the reservoir. INTRODUCTION As more volatile oil and condensate reservoirs are found, the use of phase behavior techniques to predict their performance is increasing in importance. These techniques have long been used for condensate fields and have more recently been applied to crude-oil fields containing oils of medium-to-high volatility. In these phase behavior methods, equilibrium ratios (K-values) are used to predict compositional changes in the reservoir fluids—thereby accounting for the recoverable oil that exists in the gas phase. The reliability of the predictions depends to a large extent on the equilibrium ratios used. These values must be obtained for each component for the entire pressure range being investigated. Unfortunately, because of the complex nature of hydrocarbon mixtures, accurate K-values are hard to obtain. The equilibrium ratios for a particular component will vary not only with the temperature and pressure, but also with over-all composition of the system. The importance of composition is quite critical at elevated pressures, but becomes negligible at pressures below about 300 psia. Therefore, because most phase behavior problems involve the high-pressure region, each fluid system becomes a special case. Experimental programs to determine characteristic K-values are quite difficult and time-consuming. Thus, it is often necessary to resort to approximations of the K-value data. Charts giving K-values for various mixtures and classes of mixtures are available in the literature. However, there are two major difficulties in using them: (1) the K-values of the "plus" component (that mixture of components heavier than the last one analyzed) must be obtained by extrapolation from the K-values of the other components; and (2) the K-values obtained must finally be adjusted by trial and error to agree with observed volumetric data. To eliminate these difficulties, a new method of determining equilibrium ratios was developed. Briefly, after the composition of the system as a whole has been analyzed, the method uses empirical correlations and the gross fluid properties of the system (relative vapor-liquid volumes and densities) to calculate K-values. Because the calculative procedure is long, it is best solved on a digital computer. About one hour of machine time on an IBM 650 computer is required to develop a K-chart for the fluid being examined. DEVELOPMENT OF THE METHOD OF OBTAINING K-VALUES Equilibrium ratios are defined as the ratio of the mole fraction of a component in the vapor phase to its mole fraction in the liquid phase. This statement is expressed in Eq. 1. A typical plot of equilibrium ratios for a particular system is shown in Fig. 1. It should be noted that, at pressures near the saturation pressure, the K-values appear to converge to a common point. This apparent convergence point is called the convergence pressure and is a characteristic of the system involved. Various empirical correlations of K-values have been noted. When an oil operator becomes a party to a proration agreement he may wonder, with good cause, whether production prorated .today is merely deferred until tomorrow or whether oil might be lost. Various types of evidence obtained from production records when studied quantitatively are of great assistance in arriving at definite conclusions. A study of individual examples cited in this paper leads towards some solution of the problem, particularly when they are considered in the aggregate. Many production curves on various pay horizons were studied. A disappointingly large number of these were of contributory value, but inconclusive. However, there were enough curves of similar type from the Wilcox sand at Earlsboro, Bowlegs, Seminole City, the Cromwell horizon at Little River, and the Simpson dolomite at Valley Center, Kansas, from which reasonably definite conclusions were drawn. Assuming that deferred production is later made up with no increase in ultimate recovery, a curve (Fig. 1) shows the normal flowing and pumping life of a composite well, contructed by the family curve method. The initial production of the well shown is 1700 bbl. daily and the allowed production is 25 per cent. On this basis the average daily allowed rate for the first month is 425 bb1., or the area BCDE, which is equivalent to the area AFDG under the normal decline curve. The potential production for the second month is 1500 bbl. and the allowed production 375 bbl. daily. By this procedure a potential curve for each succeeding month is obtained (points A, H, I, J and K). If the well is opened it should produce somewhere near its potential curve for a short period and then decline at a more rapid rate than the potential curve. This theoretical analysis is basic. Actual examples exhibiting all points raised by the ideal curve are rare. It seems to the writer that no very important improvements require to be made in order at least to keep up the present production for many years to come. W. Hofmann, J. Ziegler, and H. Hanemann—Having dealt with the same alloys in the winter 1941 to 1942, we want to give a short report on the generating of the hexagonal kappa phase by deforming the supersaturated alpha phase, which we then observed. This work was delivered as a Doctor of Engineering dissertation to the Technical University of Berlin by J. Ziegler in 1942. It still exists in two copies, somewhat damaged, a brief publication of it having been issued in Fiat-Review. Our work was started from the alloy Tombasil with 4.5 to 5 pct Si, 14.5 to 14 pct Zn, the rest Cu. Torpedo propellers were die cast from this alloy in Germany during the war. In order to improve this alloy, annealing was tried. By this treatment the alloy became at the same time harder and more brittle. A further research of this process was made in the Got-tingen University30 and the "Institut fÜr Metallkunde" of the Technical University of Berlin. It soon was apparent that the Cu-Si diagram at our disposal15,31,32 would not fit the observations. For this reason the pith of the matter became from then on the Cu-Si system. At that time we did not know of Smith's* and Andersen'sm latest diagrams. We first knew of them from Dr. Barrett's publication. Twenty-two alloys containing 2 to 11 pct Si were melted in a nitrogen atmosphere and generally homogenized for 2 to 4 hr at 800 °C. Part of the samples were then annealed at 700°, 600° and 500°. Annealing was followed by quenching in water. The phases corresponding to the various temperatures were identified by X-ray and microscopy. The Debye-Scherrer photographs generally were made of filings. The latter were produced after the last anneal of the samples, then equally annealed another 30 min in evacuated glass tubes and quenched in water. In the region of concentrations examined, the Cu-Si phases already known to us were observed: alpha, kappa (then called beta by us), gamma. By hot exposing an alloy of 7.69 pct Si at 800" and 750°,

ZrB2 was produced in batches of 4 to 6 Ib by interaction of ZrO2, B4C, B203, and carbon at around 2000°C in a simple graphite resistance furnace. Techniques of production are discussed and the final design of a suitable furnace is described in detail. Several other borides were made by the same technique and the process appears to have possibilities for commercial production. N seeking out new hard and refractory com- pounds, many researchers have turned to the investigation of the borides and excellent papers have been published on the properties of these compounds. Few papers, however, have appeared on the techniques and problems concerned with the production of these high temperature substances. This report describes progress made in developing a method for preparing zirconium diboride, ZrB2, on a pilot plant scale. The literature of the borides and other refractory hard metals recently has been reviewed, annotated, and classified so completely' that it is needless to attempt such an outline here. It is enough to say that three borides of zirconium have been reported: ZrB, ZrB2, and ZrB12.2 ZrB2 is the most stable of these and is especially stable in the presence of carbon up to and including its melting point of around 3000°C. Like most borides, it can be prepared in several ways. It can be prepared by synthesis of the elements, but these are expensive and difficult to produce in a high state of purity. Obviously, production directly from the oxides would have decided economic advantages. In electrolytic production such as that of calcium boride,:' the product is recovered as a sludge mixed with electrolyte; and separation of product from adhering electrolyte and regeneration of the electrolyte is an involved and difficult process. The work on borides was started on a small scale in 1948. Late in 1949, Naval Ordnance expressed a specific interest in ZrB2 and the project then centered on this compound. After the usual experimental work necessary in a new field, ZrB2 of good quality was produced by heating mixtures of B4C, ZrO2, B2O3, and carbon to a temperature of about 2000 °C in a resistance-type electric furnace. Over 100 lb was made for experimental use tests, and the method of production probably could be expanded into a commercial operation. A similar process has been described by Kieffer and coworkers.' The main chemical problems were the development of proper charges to insure complete reduction of the elements, determination of the proper temperature range at which these reductions took place, and adoption of techniques necessary to pre- vent inclusion of such impurities as carbon and nitrides. The mechanical problems consisted of developing a simple practical furnace that would attain the high temperatures required and permit use of a controlled atmosphere when necessary and determining of suitable refractories. Both problems were solved by designing a crucible resistance furnace. Crucible Resistance Electric Furnace Attempts were first made to produce ZrB2 in an electric arc furnace, but such a furnace would not provide the degree of carbon control required for producing clean graphite-free borides, so it was decided to try working in a crucible. Obviously, the furnace would have to be constructed of graphite, as the temperatures required are too high for other refractories or heating elements. Crucibles were made by hollowing out segments of graphite electrodes, which were fitted with a cover and clamped between two electrodes so that the current passing through the thin wall of the crucible would generate heat, using the principle of the Helberger crucible furnace."? Preliminary tests with this type of furnace were encouraging and led to the furnace design shown in Fig. 1. The essential components were a thin-walled graphite crucible resting on a graphite block, which formed the lower electrode assembly, and a top electrode assembly swung from a pipe column making contact with the top of the crucible. The space around the crucible was filled with graphite prepared from waste electrodes crushed to about ¼ in. This packing had excellent insulating properties, both electrically and thermally, and could be removed easily and quickly from around the crucible by means of an industrial vacuum cleaner. The largest resistor crucibles were machined from 8 in. electrode stock and were 26 in. long, with a side wall Yi in. thick and a 1 in. bottom. Temperatures were determined optically by sighting down a 1 in. hole drilled longitudinally through the top electrode and the crucible cover. Sealing this hole at the top was a water-cooled brass sight-glass assembly, shown in Fig. 2. An opening was provided for a light flow of helium to keep the sight opening clear of smoke, and a glass prism above the sight glass changed the line of sight to the horizontal for easier reading. More recently, the prism and optical pyrometer were replaced by a photoelectric recording pyrometer. At first the charges were placed directly in the resistor crucible but this meant that everything had to be withdrawn from the furnace every time the charge was emptied. This paper describes the installation and operation of a Texas Nuclear on-line silica analyzer (NOLA) coupled with a Leeds and Northrup Microtrac particle-size monitor (Microtrac) at U.S. Steel's Minntac taconite concentrator. An automatic sampling system provides the NOLA with samples of final concentrate. After the sample is analyzed for silica by the NOLA, it is pumped to the Microtrac for size and surface area measurement. A sample is analyzed every six minutes, providing the control room with the silica concentration, the percent passing 270, 400, and 500 mesh, and an equivalent Blaine surface area number. When fed a slurry of final concentrate containing between 20 and 70% solids and 5 to 6% silica, the NOLA analysis is within ±0.2% of the wet chemistry silica. The agreement between the Microtrac output and standard screen analyses is ±1.2% at 270 mesh; ±1.5% at 400 mesh, and ±2% at 500 mesh. The poorer disagreement at the finer sizes is mainly due to inaccuracies in screening at 400 and 500 mesh. The agreement between Microtrac surface area a d laboratory Blaine surface area is about 9 ±80 cm 2/g. These instruments provide rapid and reliable feedback information to the concentrator and feed forward information to the agglomerator.

The thermodynamzc properties oJ liquid Cd-Sb alloys were investigated using the cell arrangement measurments were obtained every 2°C at a heating and cooling rate of 12°C per hr and at equilibrium every 2O0C frorn 500°C down through the stable liquidus. The S-shaped asCd US composition curve was used in the cotnposition regzon near Cd,Sb, to calculate a tempeerture-dependent inleraction coefficient from quasichemical theory. Rapid changes in a scd were observed at a transition temperature varying from 400" to 465°C depending on con/kosition. It could not be determined if the changes in aScd were discontinuous, but tlze composition dependeke of the magnitude of the change is indicative of a second-order phase transformation in the liquid. The values of the experimental changes in ASCd are in agreement with calculations from the slope of the transition temperature, using the concept that a second-ovdev phase transition occurs in liquid Cd-Sb alloys. II is suggested that the transformalion is associated with the formation of Cd4Sb3 molecules in the liquid. ThE structure of liquid alloys is the subject of many investigations. X-ray, resistivity, and thermody-namic data have been interpreted as indicating varying degrees of short-range order in the liquid in alloy systems forming inter metallic compounds. In general, the melting process is not a transition from an ordered to a completely disordered state, but some degree of order is retained in the liquid. Maximum ordering in the liquid state occurs close to the melting temperature of the compound and the arrangement of atoms becomes more random at higher temperatures. Of special interest in this respect is the Cd-Sb system. It is one of the few metallic systems which form both stable and metastable compounds when liquid alloys are cooled at normal rates. The stable system exhibits an intermetallic compound, CdSb, melting at 459"c.l A second compound, CdrSbs, has also been reported,' melting close to this temperature. The metastable system has one compound, CdsSbz, melting at 420"c.I Resistivity measurements on liquid Cd-Sb alloys close to the liquidus temperatures have been interpreted in terms of a complex ordering behavior which changes rapidly with increasing temperature.3 The resistivity-composition curve is characterized by two maxima corresponding in composition to CdSb and CdsSbz. The resistivity-temperature plots show sharp breaks for alloys in the composition range of 45 to 70 at. pct Cd on cooling through a transition temperature close to the stable liquidus. Fisher and phillips4 investigated the influence of temperature and composition on the viscosity of liquid CdSb alloys. The viscosity of some alloys increases sharply on supercooling below the stable liquidus. A maximum in the viscosity-composition curve occurs at the composition CdSb. The thermodynamic properties of liquid Cd-Sb alloys have been investigated by Seltz and ~e~itt' and Elliott and chipmane by the electromotive-force method and their results are in good agreement. However, these investigations were carried out at temperatures well above the liquidus temperatures of the alloys, and the temperature coefficients of the electromotive force, dE/dT, were obtained from experimental points for each alloy at a few temperatures considerably above the liquidus temperature. Scheil and ~aach' investigated the thermodynamic properties of this system by the dew point method in the temperature range from about 100°C above the stable liquidus down into the supercooled liquid region. They reported several anomalies, i.e., the activity of a melt on heating differed from that on cooling, and the activity increased sharply in the limited temperature interval immediately above the liquidus temperature of the stable alloy, followed by a sudden decrease below the liquidus. Values obtained on heating and cooling were not in agreement. A reinvesti-gation of a few alloys by Scheil and Kalkuhl' by the electromotive-force method failed to confirm these observations. The authors concluded that the anomalies were due to inhomogeneities in the starting alloys and they discarded their previous results. The present investigation was undertaken in order to obtain thermodynamic data close to the liquidus temperature and in the supercooled region where the anomalies were originally reported, employing the electro motive-force method. This method is quite precise and will most easily permit observations of small changes in activity and partial molar entropy with temperature. Measurements were taken every few degrees so that the dE/dT values could be calculated over the entire temperature range and small changes in the thermodynamic properties close to the liquidus temperature could be observed. I) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Specimens were prepared from 99.999+ pct Cd and Sb (Cominco). Surface oxide was removed by scraping and then melting the metals under vacuum and filtering through Pyrex wool. MEETING for the thirteenth time in New York as part of the five-ring circus known as the Annual Meeting A.I.M.E., the Coal Division experienced a wartime boom in attendance. Technical sessions were crowded and whereas 65 seats were set up for the annual luncheon meeting of the Division over 100 members showed up, many of whom had to be fed elsewhere. Possibly the Coal Division should adopt "13" as its lucky number. Discussions at technical sessions, formal and informal, were lively. Those papers containing material directly concerned with the war, or containing information that might be usable for war industries, were enthusiastically received. Some criticism was made in regard to the present method of handling discussions and it was suggested that better success would be had in getting discussions in the record by the use of hired reporters. This is being considered by the executive committee of the Coal Division.

THE TERM "physical metallurgy' is used in the title of this lecture in preference to "metallography ?because the former has a broader meaning with most audiences, some people thinking of the latter as being limited to work with the microscope. This distinction, how- ever, has not been held by the out- standing workers in the field of metallography, such as the late Professor Sauveur. In the broadest sense metallography is essentially the same as physical metallurgy. The American Society for Testing Materials has adopted-the following definition: "Metallography is that branch of science which relates to the constitution and structure, and their relation to the properties of metals and alloys." This definition might be improved by adding after "properties" -"and their industrial and scientific uses." Metallography has also been defined as the science of metals and alloys. Physical metallurgy is to be distinguished from process metallurgy in that the latter relates particularly to the production of metals from the ores.

THE convention which met in Washington at the call of the Joint Conference Committee was called to order at ten o'clock on Thursday morning; June 3, by Richard L. Humphrey, temporary chairman, member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, who made a brief statement of the reason for the meeting. Lieut. Col. Charles W. Kutz, Corps of Engineers, U. S. A., and Engineer Commissioner of the District of Columbia, then welcomed .the engineers composing the convention on behalf of the District of Columbia and, the Washington engineers. Although an elaborate program had been prepared on which were many well-known speakers on interesting and important topics, , it was voted to intersperse this to fill in the usual and unavoidable hiatuses in the business program of such a convention[ Calvert Townley, president of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers, was elected permanent chairman, and J. C. Hoyt, of Washington, was elected secretary of the convention. The following committees were appointed: Consti¬tution and by-laws, Richard L. Humphrey, chairman; resolutions, Philip N. Moore, chairman; and program, F. H. Newell, chairman. Then, Gardner S. Williams, member of the, A. S. C. E. and the Grand Rapids Engineering Society of. Grand Rapids, Mich., and one-time member of the American Association of Engineers, offered the following resolutions:

A COMPLETE transformation has taken place in the boras industry during the year 1908. A most remarkable factor in this radical change in method of producing the crude borates has been its removal from the realm of industrial chemistry to the field of mining. With the development of extensive deposits of borate-minerals interstratified in thick sequences of Tertiary clays and sands, their winning becomes a strictly mining-enterprise, of the same kind and of the same certainty as the digging of coal or iron-ore. The major supply of the world's production of commercial borax now comes from the United States. While formerly all of the boric salts of commerce were laboriously extracted from the waters of saline lakes of the arid regions, or from the bottom-salts of desiccated ponds, it later was largely slowly leached from ancient desert shales and clays. During these periods the borax industry was a very hazardous and expensive vocation.

THE large-scale manufacture and use of uranium in conjunction with the atomic energy development during the war led to a need for knowing the equilibrium diagrams of uranium with various other metals. The alloys of uranium with aluminum and with iron were among the first that were studied for this purpose. Much of the work was done in the manner of a survey since it was necessary to determine the important features of the phase diagrams rather than to obtain completely detailed results. For this reason no attempt was made to locate exactly such features as liquidus lines, solid solubility limits and compound and eutectic compositions. It is believed, however, that there are no great inaccuracies in the diagrams reported here and that no important points were overlooked. Earlier work on alloys of uranium with aluminum and iron is almost nonexistent and in each case is considered to have been of little value by M. Hansen. It is interesting to note, however, that the compound UAl3 was first reported in 1902 by L. Guillet. Experimental Procedure Materials: The uranium used for making most of the aluminum alloys was obtained from material prepared by Metal Hydrides, Inc., and melted in vacuum at M.I.T. Because of the lack of an adequate supply of metal, it was necessary to use material from several different batches and hence it is impossible to state an exact analysis. However, a few results indicated about 0.01 to 0.03 pct iron and probably about 0.03 to 0.05 pct carbon. Toward the end of the work a small amount of metal was obtained from Brown University and from Iowa State College and this was used in determining the transformations in pure metal and in some dilute alloys. All of the aluminum used in this investigation came from a supply of high purity metal (greater than 99.9 pct aluminum) which was obtained through the courtesy of Dr. Mehl of the Carnegie Institute of Technology. The uranium used for making the alloys with iron was produced by the bomb reduction process which has been described by J. Chipman.² This metal, after vacuum melting, contained about 99.9 pct uranium by weight with carbon and iron as the chief impurities. Electrolytic iron containing about 0.012 pct carbon, 0.020 pct nickel and 0.009 pct copper was used in making the melts. Melting Equipment: The melting of the alloys went through a stage of development which culminated in the use of beryllia or beryllia-lined crucibles and in the use of high frequency heating in either vacuum or in an atmosphere of argon. It was found that uranium at a few hundred degrees above its melting point would pick up aluminum and to a lesser extent silicon from an alundum thimble while aluminum above 1000°C would extract silicon from the impure alundum. No reaction of either metal with beryllia was noted at temperatures as high as 1800°C. The distillation of aluminum from the aluminum-rich alloys was quite troublesome at temperatures above about 1300°C and was only partially avoided by the use of argon instead of vacuum. In the course of time, an increasing number of investigations on jet cutting all kinds of material, such as rock,1,2,3 metal,4,5 and wood6 have been reported to serve various applications. A number of papers have been published on these subject, 7,8,9 some of which refer to jets purposely containing abrasives, termed 'jetted particle drilling'.7 Since such abrasives complicate fluid handling considerably and do not appear to be absolutely necessary for making holes, only conventional drilling fluids have been considered. A large part of our investigation has been performed with the aid of three laboratory-type drilling machines, which permit tests on both micro-bits (1 ½ in. ) and full-scale bits (6 ½ -9 5/8 in. ) . In view of the application of jets in deep holes, care has been taken to simulate hydrostatic pressures as they exist in the field on the hole bottom. These have been found to have a major effect on the bit-penetration rate for various drilling fluids.

THE Industrial Minerals Division this year held no individual sessions of its own except the business meeting Tuesday afternoon. One session was held jointly with the Society of Economic Geologists, one with the Milling Methods Committee, and two with the Society of Economic Geologists and the Mining Geology Committee. At all of these meetings the attendance was better than usual and the Tuesday afternoon session, with nearly 400 present, probably set a new record for the Division. Joint sessions seem extremely popular when papers of mutual interest are presented. On Monday afternoon, mica was the predominating subject. The North Carolina mines provided most of the information presented, although the discussion brought out similarities with the New England mines. B. C. Burgess particularly stressed the fact that with the existing curtailment of mica from India it is necessary to get the most mica in the shortest time from the mines in this country. He said that the Colonial Mica Corp. hopes to have 1000 mines operating in the near future. This seems a great number, but when one considers that these mines employ from 3 to 28 men, mostly nearer the low figure, the output of each mine is relatively small. Although the price of mica is from six to ten times the prewar price, the yield of 8 to 150 lb. of mica per ton of raw ore does not provide high returns to the producer.

In a recent paper, Rawdon and Mutchlerl gave some exceptionally interesting results on the Brinell and scratch hardness of severely cold-worked metals. In their work, they found that, on continued cold rolling, the metal hardened up to a particular point and then reversed and became softer; this was true for both Brinell and scratch hardness values. The generally reported behavior2 of metals, with respect to Brinell tests on cold-worked material, is that the metals harden up to a certain point and then, on further cold rolling, no change in Brinell hardness occurs. Jeffries and Archer3 state that there is little difference between the scratch hardness of annealed and cold-worked metals; the work of Faust and Tammann4 also indicated no difference between the hardness of annealed and cold-worked copper. Rawdon and Mutchler found, when they plotted the reduction ratio (initial thickness divided by thickness after rolling) against the hardness value for the cold-rolled material, that the hardness number increased up to a reduction ratio of about 3 and then decreased and became even smaller than that for the annealed metal. This behavior was reported for both scratch and Brinell hardness; Figs. 1 and 2 show their results for Brinell hardness on the metals for which they published data. This is an exceptionally interesting phenomenon, if it occurs under all conditions of rolling, and would have an important bearing on the practice of cold
