Electricity, as normally thought of by a layman's definition, is a manmade force that has no color, no odor, is not visible, cannot be heard, yet man can control it and make it perform his work for him. A person dare not cheat on it, for it then will master him. It has laws, rules, and regulations that must be strictly adhered to if it is to perform in the safest, most reliable, and economical manner. In the early days of coal mining the power source was man himself. Later man employed steam and compressed air to reduce his muscle power requirements needed in the extraction of coal. By the turn of the 20th century, electricity had become the most common source of power for the coal industry. Steam and compressed air are still found in use in isolated cases today for specific applications; however, they are rapidly being replaced by electricity. Electrical laws and regulations are quite extensive and somewhat complex for the proper generation and use of electricity. Man-made laws, rules, and regulations for the care and handling of electricity, designed for man's safety, are rigidly enforced by the U.S. Bureau of Mines, as well as the various state departments of mines. BACKGROUND Until recent years most underground coal mines used direct current exclusively for all movable and for some stationary equipment. Exceptions were for permanent pumps, tipple, fan, and outside buildings where alternating current was normally employed. However, over 60 years ago there were mines with dual systems. Alternating current was used for cutting machines, drills, and pumps, direct current for locomotives. There were no other machines as these were hand-loading mines. Later, during early mechanization in the 1920s, alternating current was also applied to loading machines at some mines. Use of dual electric systems then declined until fairly recently when

Various models are discussed for the evaluation of the negative pressures which may occur in solidifying materials which exhibit various deformation modes: elastic-plastic, Bingham, viscous, or creep flow. The inadequacy of the previously proposed elastic-plastic solution for solidifying metals is revealed by comparison with the more reliable creep results which are given graphically for aluminum, copper, nickel, and iron. The maximum tensions experienced in the liquid phase of solidifying spheres ranging in size from large castings to submicron powders are in the range from —10' to —105 atm for these metals. THERE has been much recent interest in the negative pressures associated with the volume change on solidification and in the possibility of the occurrence of cavitation. Considering the freezing of a highly supercooled liquid, an attempt to evaluate the stresses in the liquid ahead of the rapidly moving solidification front has been made by Horvay1 on a microscale and by Glicksman2 on a macroscale. In a casting of a wide freezing range alloy, the pressure differential due to viscous flow of residual liquid through the pasty zone has been discussed by Piwonka and Flemings,3 In a previous publication4 the author has attempted to estimate the negative pressure occurring in the residual liquid of a spherical casting, employing an elastic-plastic model to describe the collapse of the solidified shell under the internal tension. An earlier model assuming a rigid shell was shown to be inaccurate by many orders of magnitude. The elastic-plastic model is critically reviewed here, and other models are developed which are thought to be more closely related to metals and other materials near their melting points. The spherical geometry (Fig. 1) is chosen because the highest shrinkage pressures would be developed, although the analyses are readily adaptable to cylindrical geometry. A parallel sided casting experiences little internal tension because of the relatively easy dishing inward of the sides. (This commonly observed phenomenon has previously been attributed solely to atmospheric pressure.) Furthermore, small regions of confined liquid in a large solidified volume of a casting approximate reasonably well to spherical geometry. ELASTIC-PLASTIC MODEL The author has shown4 that as solidification proceeds the internal hydrostatic tension builds up until the elastic limit of the shell is exceeded. At this point the internal pressure is closely -2Y/3. Subsequently a plastic zone spreads from the inner surface toward the outer surface of the shell. When the whole casting is deforming plastically a rather more generalized analysis taking account of the externally applied pressure PA + 2y/b gives the internal pressure as: P = Pa + 2y/a + 2ys/b - 2 Y In(b/a) [1] The 2y/a and 2ys/b terms result from the tendency of the liquid-solid and solid-vapor interfaces to shrink, reducing their energy, and thereby helping to collapse the solid phase and compress the liquid phase. The 2y/b term would be important only for powders. The last term arises because of the plastic restraint of the solid, resisting collapse and so effectively expanding the residual liquid. From Eq. [I] it is easily shown that there is a minimum in the pressure at the radius amia= y/Y [2] which is of the order of 103K for the metals aluminum, copper, and iron, and corresponds to the minimum pressure Pmin = 2 Y[l-ln(bY/y [3] The results of a fully worked out elastic-plastic solution are given in a previous reporL4 The main criticism which may be leveled at this analysis when applied to metals at their melting points is the strong dependence of the yield stress on the strain rate. The strain rate varies with both solidification conditions (e.g., whether chill-cast or slowly cooled) and during solidification, as is indicated in the following section. Thus an appropriate choice of Y is very arbitrary. Before proceeding to a discussion of models which are strain-rate-dependent, it is necessary to evaluate the strain rate as a function of the rate of solidification. SOLIDIFICATION RATE Various empirical relations have been deduced5 for the rate of thickening of the solid shell by pour- out tests on partially solidified spheres. These, however, are unsatisfactory for our purposes since they become very inaccurate when the liquid core is very small. A theoretical approach is therefore necessary, and some solutions are set out below. SINCE Cahn's¹ paper on plastic deformation in orthorhombic (a) uranium an increasing amount of work is to be expected on orientation of single crystals and preferred orientation in this metal. It would seem desirable to have a table of angles between crystallographic planes (hkl) and (HKL). Table I shows these angles as distances from (loo), (0l0), and (00l), and in Fig. 1 as a standard (001) stereographic projection. Only the locations of poles whose diffracting planes produce Cu Ka reflections up to 0 = 70.5" (i.e. (154) ) are given." The relative reflection of these planes are represented by circle diameters. It is hoped that the projection may also be used in making inverse pole figures, originally suggested by Harris.' Values of 4 were calculated from the expression hH kK 1L cos = hH/a²+kK/b²-lL/c² where the lattice parameters a, b, c, and the spac-ings d were taken from the work of Jacob and Warren." (They report a = 2.852 kX (2.8578 A), b = 5.865 kX (5.8768 A), c = 4.945 kX (4.9550 A).) The isothermal shrinkage rates of copper-powder compacts were determined in the temperature range from 760o to 1060oC. The rates for compacts fabricated from a pure spherical copper powder were compared, on the one hand, with those fabricated from a spherical powder containing a dispersion of aluminum oxide in the copper matrix and, on the other hand, with those fabricated from a pure copper powder having irregularly shaped particles. The irregular copper-powder compacts shrank much faster than the spherical copper-powder compacts and these, in turn, shrank faster than dispersion -strengthened copper -powder compacts. The experiments were run under a small external load. By varying this load, the stress dependence of the isothermal shrinkage rate could be measured for compacts from spherical-copper powders. This stress dependence was found to be approximately proportional to the 4th (dispersion-strengthened alloys) or 4.5th (pure metals) power of the stress. It is concluded that the material-trans port mechanism is due to dislocation climb rather than to Herring-Naharro creep. In this investigation the isothermal shrinkage rates of compacts made of copper powder with an average particle size of 70 g in the temperature range from 780o to 1060°C were studied. The aim of the investigation was to determine the mechanism of material transport responsible for the shrinkage of these compacts. Since the phenomenon observed in this investigation was shrinkage of compacts at high temperatures, it will be necessary to consider all the material-transport mechanisms possible in sintering. It is unlikely that evaporation and condensation, surface diffusion, or even volume diffusion of vacancies, in which surfaces of small radius of curvature are vacancy sources and those of larger radius of curvature vacancy sinks, will materially contribute to a sintering process involving shrinkage, i.e., one in which the centers of adjacent particles move towards each other. The two principal mechanisms which were considered were the so-called Nabarro-Herring mechanism and a plastic deformation mechanism by dislocation movement. Both of these mechanisms were originally conceived to explain creep, i.e., the plastic deformation of metals at elevated temperatures under a constant applied stress. The shrinking of metal-powder compacts which was studied in this investigation can be readily treated as a creep process. This means that the shrinkage rates observed are considered as creep rates under the influence of an applied stress. It is true that the stresses in sintering experiments are generally not constant but decrease continually with time, but, by considering creep rates or shrinkage rates over a relatively short time interval, the small changes in stress during this time interval can generally be neglected. Nabarro-Herring microcreep is a high-temperature deformation mechanism which is caused by a diffusional flow of vacancies from boundaries under a tensile stress towards those under a compres-sive stress. Herring1 has shown that in this type of microcreep the strain rate e is proportional to the applied stress and follows an equation of the form ma, aexp(-Q/RT) [l| where <j is applied stress, Q is the activation energy for self-diffusion, R is the gas constant, and T is the absolute temperature This type of creep can explain the shrinkage of a porous compact. The surface of the pores are subjected to the tensile stress of surface tension, while the grain boundaries are under a compressive stress also due to surface tension. Vacancies diffuse from the pore surface through the lattice to the grain boundaries, where they are eliminated. In order to maintain vacancy equilibrium at the pore surface the vacancies leaving the region of the pore surface are replenished from the volume of the pore, which means that the pores shrink.

(Cleveland meeting, October, 1912.) LARGE deposits of titaniferous iron-ore occur at Caribou, an old silver-mining camp in Boulder county, Colo., 17 miles west by south of Boulder, and a few miles northwest of the tungsten-mines. Professor Regis Chauvenet 1 published a part analysis of the ore many years ago, but gave no description of the wall-rock. Caribou hill, which contains both the silver-bearing veins and the iron-ore deposits, is a low dome of gabbro surrounded by the Archaean schists and gneisses of the Front range of the Rocky mountains, the peaks of which, a few miles west of Caribou, attain an elevation exceeding 12,000 ft. The gabbro stock is roughly elliptical in outline, with approximate diameters of 1 and 3 miles. The crest of the dome is 10,500 ft. above sea-level, and the town and ore-deposits are 500 ft. lower. Outcrops of the iron-ore occur in the town and extend NW. for 2,000 ft., where they disappear under the swampy meadows of Caribou park. Portions of the deposit are covered by drift, but one continuous outcrop is 900 ft. long and from 200 to 250 ft. wide. A second deposit is 0.25 mile south of the town along the eastern slope of the hill. It is not as well defined as the north bed, but is approximately 1,000 ft. long and from 100 to 200 ft. wide. The easily disintegrated ore does not form prominent outcrops, but the outlines of the deposits are readily traced by the large amount of ore fragments that cover the ground. Trenches and pits sunk on the outcrop expose a roughly banded magnetic iron-ore, with pyroxene as the principal gangue-mineral. The Gabbro. PHASE relations in the system CoO-SiO2 have been determined as a basis for further investigations of thermodynamic properties of olivine solid solutions involving Co2SiO4 as a component. Previous data on the system CoO-SiO2 are incomplete or uncertain. Biltz and Lemke1 determined the melting point of cobalt orthosilicate as 1345°C , but Asanti and Kohlmeyer2 have later found a considerably higher temperature, 1420°C. The latter authors also studied melting relations of one mixture on the CO side and two mixtures on the SiO2 side of the orthosilicate composition and sketched a tentative phase diagram for a limited composition range of the system. However, no phase identification was carried out, and the authors left unanswered the question of the possible existence of a stable meta-silicate phase. Greig3 showed that a 90 wt pct SiO2-10 wt pct Co mixture at 1725°C consists of two immiscible liquid phases. The quenching technique was used in the present investigation. Mixtures of high-purity cobalt oxide ("Fisher Certified") and dehydrated silicic acid ("Baker Analyzed") were equilibrated in air atmosphere. The samples were then quenched to room temperature and the phases present were identified by microscopic and X-ray examination. The samples were kept in small envelopes made from thin (0.0004 in.) platinum foil. Thermodynamic data which have become available recently for Pt-Co alloys4 were used to check that the losses of COO from the oxide samples by alloying of cobalt with platinum in the present investigation were too small to change significantly the compositions of the oxide material during the equilibration. A vertical tube furnace with an 80 pct Pt 20 pct Rh resistance winding was used in runs up to 1510°C. Temperatures in these runs were measured with a Pt vs 90 pct Pt 10 pct Rh thermocouple calibrated against the melting point of diopside (CaMgSi2O6, 1391.5?C). The given temperatures as measured by this technique are estimated to be accurate to *5°C. Quench runs at temperatures above 1650°C were made with a modified Roberts and Morey5 strip furnace, using strip resistors composed of a 60 pct Pt-40 pct Rh alloy. Temperatures were measured with an optical pyrometer which was calibrated against the liquidus temperature of a mixture composed of 10 wt pct CaO, 90 wt pct SiO2 (1707°C). The temperatures measured with this technique have an estimated accuracy of +15°C. The results are shown graphically in Fig. 1. Only one intermediate phase, the orthosilicate Co2SiO4 with olivine-type structure, is stable in addition to the end members cobalt oxide and silica. The melting point of the orthosilicate was found to be 1415" ± 5°C. The metastilicate CoSiO3 is not stable at the temperatures of the present investigation. The two eutectic points in the system CoO-SiO2 where COO plus olivine, and olivine plus silica, coexist with liquid were found to be 72 wt pct COO and 1407°C and 63 wt pct COO and 1381°C, respectively. The melting point of cobalt oxide in air was taken as 1745?C, based on the previous data of Aukrust and Muan.6 Within limits of error (+ 5?C), identical eutectic temperatures to those determined in air were found when two representative mixtures were equilibrated at 1 atm O2 pressure and in an atmosphere of 84 vol pct CO2, 16 vol pct H2. This suggests that changes in oxidation state of cobalt in the condensed phases are not significant as far as their effect on the phase relations are concerned. This inference was substantiated by failure to detect7 any "excess oxygen" (i.e., oxygen in excess of that contained in Co2SiO4) in a sample of orthosilicate composition equilibrated in air 10°C above the liquidus temperature and subsequently quenched to room temperature. The physical properties, chemical behavior under thermal treatment, and fertilizer value of fluorine-containing pseudowavellite (hydrous calcium aluminum phosphate) that occurs as phosphate clay admixed with quartz sand in an extensive deposit near Bartow, Fla., were determined by experiments in laboratory, pilot-plant, and greenhouse. When the mineral was heated at 500°C, 80 pct of the phosphorus became citrate soluble. The heated product, however, deteriorates markedly under moist conditions such as obtain in the soil.

AT THE inception of the cyanide process and its adaptation to the practice of gold and silver metallurgy much difficulty was experienced in applying it to auro-cupriferous ores, both in economy of treatment and recovery of the gold from solution. The presence of copper in the ore effected a high chemical consumption of cyanide during treatment, and in the solvent solution, it retarded the precipitation of the gold on zinc shavings. The coating of the copper on the zinc shavings presented even worse difficulties than the increased cyanide consumption as most ores contain a small amount of copper. This interference of copper led to the use of other precipitating methods and attempts to recover the cyanide which was consumed during ore treatment. Of the other methods used, electrolytic precipitation was the most practical until a better understanding of the application of zinc shavings and zinc dust developed. In September, 1905, a patent entitled, "Method for Recovering Precious Metals from Solution," was granted to Isaac Anderson and Michael Scanton. This method is adaptable to precious metal ores containing a small percentage of copper but has never been extensively used or perfected. The process has

THE name of Swedish charcoal iron will probably bring to the memory of many old consumers an extremely tough and ductile iron which was formerly used in considerable quantities for common blacksmith purposes. To-day very little of this iron goes to such kind of work. Swedish charcoal iron is merely a speciality which is chosen whenever its remark¬able properties can be utilized. By giving a rough sketch of the manufacturing process of Swedish charcoal iron, the character of the iron, its weak as well as its strong points will more easily be understood. Swedish charcoal iron is a wrought iron also known in the United States under the name of Norway iron and Swedish Lancashire iron. The name Norway iron seems to have been attached to the product for the reason that in the earlier days it was generally brought into the States by Norwegian ships. However no iron of this kind is now made in Norway. The reason for the name Swedish Lancashire iron is that the manufac¬turing process emanated from Lancashier in England, the method being generally adopted in Sweden in the years 1831-1850. Today this iron is, with the exception of one plant in the United States, made in no place in the world outside of Sweden.

Application of the coal hydrogenation process for the production of chemicals is described. It has been estimated that a plant to produce 31,090 bbl per day of chemicals and fuels would cost $326,- 000,000. These products would consist of 6.1 pct by weight tar acids, 50.8 pct aroma tics, 16.4 pct LPG, and 26.7 pct gasoline. THE coal hydrogenation process is well known as a means for the production of liquid fuels from coal. In this paper the possibilities of the coal hydrogenation process as a source of chemical raw materials will be discussed. The recovery of chemicals from coal hydrogenation products necessitates some modifications and additions to the equipment used for the production of fuels. The conversion of coal into liquid fuels such as gasoline requires two steps: liquid phase and vapor phase hydrogenation. Intermediate oils obtained in the liquid phase contain oxygen and nitrogen compounds, especially aromatic compounds, since the coal itself is composed mainly of cyclic compounds. These oils are the raw material for the separation of high molecular weight aro-matics and of tar acids and tar bases. The relative amounts of heavy and middle oil—boiling above and below, e.g., 325°C—can be influenced by temperature, residence time, and catalyst of the liquid phase hydrogenation. In the vapor phase hydrogenation a solid bed catalyst is used to convert the intermediate oil from the liquid phase operation into hydrocarbons of the gasoline boiling range. Essentially pure hydrocarbons with a low content of sulphur, oxygen, nitrogen, and olefines are obtained. Depending mainly on the catalyst, the high ring compound content of the liquid phase oil can be preserved and gasoline rich in aromatics obtained. However, with other catalysts, these ring compounds can be split into gasoline with a high content of isoparaffins.&apos; Again, depending on the operating conditions, products of varying boiling range can be obtained. Selection of catalyst and operating conditions therefore makes possible the production of different grades of motor fuel and also variations in the relative amounts of benzene, toluene, and xylene when aromatic hydrocarbons are produced. The schematic flowsheet, Fig. 1, shows the main steps of the coal hydrogenation process, and the product streams used for the recovery of chemicals are indicated. In the liquid phase hydrogenation stage, coal is made into a paste with recycle heavy oil. The coal paste is mixed with hydrogen and preheated at a pressure of 300 to 700 atm in heat exchangers and preheaters. The coal paste and hydrogen enter high pressure converters where the liquefaction of coal, conversion of the high boiling liquid materials initially obtained, into intermediate oils is performed at a temperature around 470°C. The reaction products enter the hot catchpot in which lower boiling oil vapors are separated from the residue containing unreacted coal, ash, and heavy oil. This residue, usually called H.O.L.D. (heavy oil let down), is processed to separate solid and liquid material. By thermal treatment of the residue, e.g., a coking process, distillate oil is obtained, which can be recycled as part of the pasting oil. This stream is rich in polynuclear aromatics and can be, and has been, used for the recovery of such material. The strong upward curve of fluorspar consumption continued through 1968, with domestic producers unable to furnish more than 30% of U.S. requirements. Stocks of all grades were quite short at all points during most of 1968. This resulted in price increases as both domestic and foreign producers sought to cover spiralling labor costs. Further increases are probable for 1969. All Illinois mines were closed by strikes in January and February. The strong trend in metallurgical imports reflects the increased use of fluorspar in steelmaking, as new oxygen process steel plants come into production. The growth of use of all fluorocarbon chemicals continues to require additional acid grade fluorspar, with military uses a major factor. Several new aluminum smelting facilities coming into production are adding to the aluminum fluoride needs, bringing further pressure upon the world supply of acid grade fluorspar. The world-wide consumption pressure on all grades of fluorspar is pushing prices up, and no end to the tight supply is in sight, even assuming that all the new projects cited here are finished on schedule.

A phase diagram showing boundary curve and quantity of liquid in the two-phase region was determined for a mixture of natural gas and natural gasoline in the region of its critical conditions. The temperatures and pressures of phase measurements were in the range of 85 to 212 F. and 1300 to 2600 Ib. per sq. in., respectively, with the critical conditions at 169.5 F. and 2615 Ib. per sq. in. abs. Color phenomena were observed in the region of the boundary curve from 102&apos; to 192 F. Approximate densities of the single-phase and two-phase regions and analysis of the system are included. Boundary curves between the single-phase and the two-phase regions have been determined for several binary mixtures containing hydrocarbons. 2,3,4.6,7,10,11,12,14 These investigators did not report the relative amounts of liquid and vapor within the two-phase region. The equilibrium values obtained from the dew-point and bubble-point data can be used to compute the lines showing percentage of liquid on the pressure-temperature phase diagram8 but the positions of the lines near the critical temperature and pressure are uncertain. Relative amounts of vapor and liquid were obtained for a gasoline and a naphtha1 within the two-phase area but not in the region of the critical temperature and pressure. The bubble-point and dew-point lines, as well as the percentage liquid lines within the two-phase region, were determined by visual observations in glass apparatus. Any city dweller who has walked alone along a remote mine passageway has to be impressed by the eerie silence-the total absence of noise except for one&apos;s own breathing and scuffing of boots on the bottom. An underpound mine can have tremendous contrasts, from complete silence to the ear piercing clatter of percussion drills working in the mine roof. Noise in underground mining machines is both useful and detrimental. Without characteristic noises that are recognizable to miners, operators would have a more difficult job operating their machines. Noise serves as a warning of approaching machinery, and changes in noise give indication that breakdowns may occur. But excessive noise is a health hazard. In recognition of this fact, our congress included noise exposure as a part of the "Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969." As [Fig. 1] indicates, allowable noise exposure is established by specifying a time duration permitted at different noise levels. This is the well known "Walsh-Healey" criteria which govern noise exposure in many industries. In most industries noise exposure is not a constant value. Noise emitted from coal mining machinery varies widely, and therefore interpretation of compliance is not a simple matter. Time, environment, instrumentation and machine productivity, as well as the designed machine characteristics affect the results. It is the purpose of this paper to present the underground coal face machinery noise problem from a manufacturer&apos;s point of view. Manufacturers are very much aware of their responsibility to alleviate the noise problem. Not infrequently, orders are received from coal operators that a given new machine must comply with "The Coal Mine Health & Safety Act" noise regulations. Such a request is indicative of the misunderstanding which exists with machine users, while indicating their desire to comply with the law. Obviously, if all machinery could be designed and used at some arbitrary low noise level, it would be possible to simplify the regulations. However, there still remains the pervasive problem of existing machines. Extensive investigation to create practical retrofit kits for existing machines, to substantially reduce noise have been only marginally successful. Certain machine mechanisms are inherent noise makers. The only really good solution is to substitute a quieter mechanism. Such overall new designs have been undertaken, and several examples are mentioned later in this paper. Before describing machine noise problems, it is necessary to define noise values. Noise levels are measured in decibels. The designation "DBA" is decibels measured on the "A" scale, or one in which the frequency sensitivity of the instrumentation is about the same as the human ear. The numbers are often misinterpreted because it is a logarithmic, rather than an arithmetic scale. In comprehending the numbers, it should be remembered that any increase of 3 dB doubles the sound power. In practical terms this means that two noises of equal power at the same distance away increases a dB reading by three. THE following scanty notes on the Roumanian oil-region may serve as an introduction to more detailed future study and description. The Roumauian oil-belt, follows the outer edge of the sweep of the Carpathian Mountains, and may, in a broad sense, be regarded as a prolongation of the Galician belt. It is distributed over a tract of country from 300 to 400 miles in length, with a width of from 15 to 20 miles, and is believed to cover an area of at least 20,000 hectares (59,420 acres). The Government claims that 16,000 to 17,000 hectares of its land is petroliferous. The primary deposits of petroleum are considered to be in the Padeogene (Oligocene) and the Neogene (the salines of the Miocene) formations. Most of the other repositories, especially those of Muntenie, are only secondary, the petroleum there having been introduced by the orogeneric movements which raised the Carpathian Mountains. The oil-field has been divided by the Roumanian survey into two regions, the Flysch and the Sub-Carpathian, as is shown in the accompanying sketch-map, Fig. 1.(p. 518). So far as is yet, known, practically all the seepages and .productive pits and wells are situated oil anticlinals. Those which outcrop in the Flysch region. (called Paleogene anticlinals), as indicated in the sketch-map, Fig. 1, are : Solontz, Middle Oligocene; Moineshti, Moineshti and Tagu-Ocna-beds of the Eocene.
