By means of mathematical solutions to the appropriate diffusion equations, we describe the kinetics of the thermal diffusion of hydrogen in Zircaloy-2 for the various temperatures and concentrations encountered in a heavy water moderated reactor. When the hydrogen concentration is below terminal solid solubility only the a Phase is present. Redistributions are then described in terms of the characteristic functions of the difhsion equation. For higher concentrations both the a and 6 phases are present. We assume the two phases to be always in equilibrium. For moderately small hydrogen concentrations exact solutions of the two-phase equation approach the the approximate solutions derived by Sawatzky and for all concentrations the exact solutions exhibit the qualitative features of his result: the two-phase concentration increases with time, everywhere; in the absence of a hydrogen current at the hot end of the sample an a-phase region always exists there; the interface of the a + 6 , a-phase boundary moves toward the cold md of the sample and the hydrogen concentration is discontinuous at the interface. Simultaneous solulions of the a and a + 6 hydrogen distributims and of the concomitant interface motion are obtained and compared to the observations of Sawatzky and Markowitz. The kinetics of the hydrogen diffusion process are shown to lead to m apparent heat of transport of the a phase which is lower than the actual value (even for samples with long anneals) thus resolving at least partially the disparity between experimental measurements of this quantity. A number of recent papers1"4 have reported measurements on the diffusion and redistribution of hydrogen in Zircaloy-2 under temperature and concentration gradients. These studies were instigated by problems arising from increasing use of Zircaloy-2 as a fuel element cladding material in pressurized-water power-reactors. The Zircaloy-2 picks up hydrogen during the operation of the reactor: the consequent precipitation of zirconium hydride in the Zircaloy-2 has pronounced effects on its mechanical properties. The Purpose of the present Paper is to describe the kinetics of the thermal diffusion of hydrogen in Zircaloy-2 for the various hydrogen concentrations and temperatures likely to be encountered in reactors. When the hydrogen in the Zircaloy-2 is entirely in the solid solution phase (a phase), the differential equation for thermal diffusion is well known and the redistribution can be described by standard mathematical methods some of which are given in Section 11 below. The treatment of the a + 6 (hydride) region differs from the earlier treatment of sawatzky3 by taking into account several modifications of the two-phase diffusion equations as suggested to us by Markowitz4 and Kidson.5 Even with the modifications the results obtained in our more complete treatment are substantially the same as those found by Sawatzky. As we show, the difference between the results of sawatzky3 and kIarkowitz4 is largely due to the difference in the geometry of their experiments. In the next section we derive the modified two-phase equation for arbitrary geometry. The exact solution of this equation is given in Section III for linear and cylindrical geometry. It is shown that Sawatzky's approximate solution is quite accurate for almost all the temperatures and hydrogen concentrations which are actually encountered. In Sawatzky's approximate theory the hydrogen concentration everywhere in the two-phase region increases continuously. As his paper pointed out, this result, together with hydrogen conservation, implies that in a sample with no hydrogen current flowing into the hot end a two-phase region is always accompanied by a single-phase region at the hot end of the sample. The net hydrogen gain in the two-phase region is supplied by the decrease of hydrogen in the single-phase region and by the movement of the (a, a + 6) boundary toward the cold end of the sample. Hydrogen conservation at the (a, a + 6) boundary leads to a discontinuity in the concentration and its derivative there. In Section IV it is shown how these qualitative features of the thermal diffusion kinetics arise from the simultaneous solution of the a-phase differential equation and a + 6 phase equation. Methods derived by us previously for the solution of the redistribution in both phases and the accompanying motion of the boundary are used to obtain approximate solutions valid for large times. The solutions account well for the observed redistributions of Sawatzky and Markowitz. It is shown how the continuing motion of the (a, a + 6) boundary leads to measured values of the heat of transport lower than the actual value, even for specimens with relatively long anneals.

In the course of the examination, at the BureLu of Standards, of fusible tin boiler plugs for the Steamboat Inspection Service, it became evident that an investigation should be undcrtaken to determine the precautions necessary in the manufacture of acceptable plugs. The results of the tests of these plugs show that their manufacture has improved, though at present not all of the plugs tested are, satisfactory. Table 1 gives the result of tests of some 1500 plugs from about 100 makers. Records of the tests show that several of the makers were able to produce satisfactory plugs with every pouring. The Steamboat Inspection Service has the following specifications for fusible plugs: "Fusible plugs for use in boilers of steam vessels under the jurisdiction of the Steamboat Inspection Service shall be made of bronze casing with the bore tapering continuously and openly from end to end, and filled from end to end with tin not less than 99.7 per cent. pure and to contain not more than 0.1 per cent. of lead and not more than 0.1 per cent. of zinc. The small end of the bore may be countersunk not more than 1/32 in. in depth and width, but no recess, thread, or cavity other than this countersink shall be allowed." It is well known that the superconducting critical current densities of many alloy superconductors may be increased by cold working and in some cases further enhanced by a short heat treatment. This latter enhancement has been attributed to the redistribution of dislocations into cell-like networks' and to the precipitation of second phase particles,2'3 which act as flux pinning centers. In a manner analogous to dislocation pinning in precipitation hardening alloys,4 it is expected that here also a critical distribution of the pinning centers should result in maximum pinning effect. Concentration inhomogeneities exist in most or all commercial alloys yet there have been only a few attempts made to determine their effect on critical current capacity in the absence of cold working. Sutton and Baker,5 and Kramer and Rhodes6 have found that the complex precipitation processes occurring during the aging of Ti-Nb alloys can result in critical current density enhancement. Livingston7-10 has clearly shown, for lead and indium based alloys, that the distribution of precipitated second phase particles is of critical importance in determining magnetization characteristics. However, these '(soft" alloys age at room temperature and the time involved in specimen preparation prevents metallographic examination in the state in which the superconducting measurements are made. Thus results with such alloys are expected to be biased towards larger precipitates and interpar-ticle spacing. The present study of Ta-Zr alloys was undertaken to examine the influence of second phase precipitation, as controlled by heat treatment, on the critical current capacity of well annealed polycrystalline material. A study of the published phase diagram11 indicated that annealing supersaturated samples containing up to 9 at. pct Zr at suitable temperatures would result in the precipitation of a zirconium-rich second phase. It was MATERIALS AND PROCEDURE The alloys were prepared from spectrochemically pure tantalum and zirconium. Analysis was carried out by the supplier. Major impurities in the tantalum were: 12 pprn of 02, 17 pprn of N2, 19 pprn of C, and less than 10 ppm each of Mo, Nb, Al, Cr, Ni, Si, Ti. The crystal bar zirconium was pure except for the following concentrations: 15 pprn of 02, 17 ppm of C, 23 ppm of Fe, 11 ppm of Cu, and less than 10 pprn each of Al, Ca, N2, Ti, and Sn. Samples were prepared in the form of 8 to 10 g but-tons by arc melting using a nonconsumable electrode on a water-cooled copper hearth in a high purity ar-gon atmosphere. Each button was inverted and re-melted three times to ensure an even distribution of the component elements. The samples were then homogenized at temperatures close to their melting points for 3 days in a vacuum furnace maintained at 5 x 10-7 mm Hg. After this treatment the buttons were cold rolled to sheets approximately 0.020 in. thick from which specimens were cut, 0.040 in, wide and 1 in. long suitable for critical current density (J,) and critical temperature (T,) measurements. These strips were then recrystallized and further grain growth was allowed by an additional vacuum heat treatment at 1800°C for 60 hr. Some second phase precipitation occurred during cooling of the furnace and a solution treatment was necessary to produce single phase supersaturated samples. This treatment was successfully carried out by sealing the samples together with some zirconium chips in quartz tubes under a vacuum of 5 x 10-7 mm Hg, heating at 1000°C for 5 hr and then quenching into water or liquid nitrogen. The samples were then heat treated at either 350" or 550°C and quenched into water or liquid nitrogen. All samples which were heat treated at 350°C were quenched in both cases by cracking the capsules in liquid nitrogen. The samples treated at 550°C were quenched by dropping the capsules into water. Analysis for oxygen in randomly selected samples indicated that the oxygen content was in the range of 175 to 225 ppm. Values of Tc were determined by employing a self-inductance technique. Jc measurements were made at 4.2oK by increasing the direct current through the wire in a perpendicularly applied field until a voltage of 1 pv was detected with a null meter. The risk of resistive heating at the soldered joints during these latter measurements was reduced by first plating the ends of the wires with indium and then soldering to the copper current leads using tin. Metallographic examinations were performed after mechanical polishing of the same samples and etching in a 4H20:3HN03 (conc):lHF(conc) solution.

Activities of aluminum in solid Ni-A1 alloys have been determined between 20 and 60 at. pet Al and 1200" and 1400°K by an isopiestic method in which nickel specimens, heated in a temperature gradient, are equilibrated with aluminum vabor in a closed all-alumina system. The activity of aluminum shows a strong negative deviation from Raoult's law at low concentrations but increases by three orders of magnitude within the ß(NiAl) phase. The partial molar enthalpy and entropy of mixing are negative. Using Wagner and Schottky's theory of ordered compounds, a degree of disorder of 4 x 10 -4 for NiAl and 1.25 X 10-2 for FeAl has been calculated THE Ni-A1 system has been studied by a great number of investigators, and the results, as far as the phase diagram is concerned, have been compiled by Hansen.1 The phase boundaries from 0 to 50 at. pet Ni are well-established. At higher nickel contents the boundaries are still in dispute and an additional phase, A12Ni3, has been reported.' The phase diagram is dominated by a very stable high-melting compound, NiA1, with a relatively wide range of homogeneity. Heats of formation of solid alloys have been determined calorimetrically by Oelsen and Middel3 from 20 to 95 at. pet Ni and by Kubaschewski4 from 25 to 80 at. pet Ni. According to the most recent compilation5 no other thermodynamic investigations have been reported for the Ni-A1 system. Due to the corrosive nature and the low vapor pressure of aluminum, a method has been employed for determining activities of aluminum which was previously developed for the Fe-A1 system.= Nickel specimens, heated in a closed evacuated alumina system in a temperature gradient, were equilibrated with aluminum vapor from a source within the system kept at constant temperature. After complete equilibration the specimens were analyzed and activities calculated from the known vapor pressure of aluminum. APPARATUS AND EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Materials. The nickel specimens were made from wafers of electrolytic nickel (International Nickel Corp.) of 99.99 pet purity which were rolled to a 0.001-in.-thick foil by Driver-Harris Co. and to a 0.005-in.-thick sheet in our laboratory. The aluminum (Aluminum Corp. of America) had a purity of 99.99+ pct. The alumina tubes and crucibles were made of impervious recrystallized alumina with an alumina content of 99.7 pet (Triangle RR, Mor-ganite Inc.). Experimental Procedure. Annular specimens were punched from the sheet, the punching burrs removed, and the specimens degreased in carbon tetrachloride and acetone and weighed on a micro-balance to within an accuracy of ±0.01 mg. The specimens were positioned with alumina spacers along an alumina tube, and the positions measured. Aluminum metal was machined into cylindrical shape, and placed into an alumina crucible. The tube with the specimens was then inserted into a hole drilled into the aluminum metal. An alumina tube with its closed end at the top was slipped over the specimens so that its lower end fitted snugly into the alumina crucible. The assembled reaction tube was inserted into a mullite tube with a water-cooled brass head which had an opening for a quartz thermocouple protection tube and a metal-to-glass connection to a conventional vacuum system. A Pt-Pt 10 pet Rh thermocouple could be raised and lowered in the quartz tube which was placed along the outside of the alumina reaction tube. The mullite tube was heated by two separately controlled resistance-tube furnaces so that in the experimental temperature range an over-all temperature gradient of approximately 150o to 250°C could be imposed on the reaction tube. The position of the mullite tube was adjusted so that the surface of the aluminum metal was always at the temperature minimum. The reaction tube was thoroughly evacuated before and during slowly heating the assembly up to the melting point of aluminum. A pressure of less than 2 µ (Hg) was maintained during an experiment. Once the aluminum had melted, it isolated the contents of the alumina tube from the surroundings. Several times during an experiment the temperature gradient was carefully measured. An experiment lasted from 3 to 6 weeks and it was terminated by air cooling the evacuated mullite tube. For further details of the experimental procedure the paper on the Fe-A1 system6 should be consulted.

THE CHAIRMAN (ALBERT SAUVEUR, Cambridge, Mass.).-Any information likely to throw light on the constitution and proper treatment of high-speed steel in order to obtain maximum results, should surely he welcomed. All users of high-speed steel, I believe, will agree with the authors that, in order to obtain satisfactory results, it is not sufficient to heat all brands of high-speed steel to one and the same temperature; apparently very slight differences of chemical composition seem to call for marked differences in temperature. I think that all of us agree that a properly treated piece of high-speed steel should have a fine austenitic or polyhedral structure and that an appreciable quantity of free carbide may be present in the case of very high tungsten steels. What we seem to lack is a satisfactory method, quick and reliable, of ascertaining when the proper structure has been obtained. I think Mr. Bellis' paper is a step in the right direction. To the untrained eye, however, it is not an easy matter to select from some of his photomicrographs the one representing the best structure; for instance, in the case of steel A, we wonder why temperatures of 2,250 and 2,300 do not yield the same results, seeing that both structures are apparently alike, and the same might apply to some of the other samples. I have no doubt, however, that the experienced observer is capable of detecting structural differences that are not made plain here and by which he is able to select the proper quenching temperature. J.-On page 68 the authors say that the use of a barium chloride bath to eliminate this difficulty has the disadvantage that the surface of the tool becomes decarbonized." I would like to ask whether they actually found that the surface was decarbonized, or whether they base this conclusion on softening alone? A. E. BELLIS, Springfield, Mass.-No, we have never demonstrated that it was a decarbonization, it is just the softening of the steel. The addition of ferrocyanide to the ferrochloride bath has been suggested. I think that is not altogether satisfactory, because the ferrocyanide bath changes composition very rapidly at these high temperatures, and it would be just a question of luck whether or not it had too much or too little ferrocyanide in the bath giving equilibrium with the carbon content.

Hole deviation has great consequences on mining economy, especially for long hole drilling technique. First of all the bore hole datas are concerned but also such factors as development, loss of ore and waste rock dilution are influenced. Hole deviation for sublevel open stoping is illustrated with examples from some mines. The deviations are indicated as mean values but also as standard deviation values, owing to their statistical distribution. The economic influence of the hole deviation is especially studied for steep, small lowgrade orebodies, mined with big hole blasting. Hole deviation can thus influence costs up to US$ 3-4 per ton for operating, development, losses of ore and rock waste dilution. This cost is of the same magnitude as the total operating costs for many sublevel stoping mines. The economic savings in accurate drilling are therefore substantial and are worth all attention.

INVESTIGATORS in the field of temperature measurement have long sought a thermoelectric couple fulfilling the following requirements: 1. It should be useful up to and including high industrial tempera-tures; i. e., 1000° to 1800° C. 2. Its thermoelectric variation with temperature should be linear and be maintained after heating to high temperatures for long periods of time. 3. It should be reproducible; i. e., different couples of the same elements should have similar calibration curves. 4. Its thermoelectric power should be large so as to allow the industrial use of rugged recording instruments. 5. Chemical reactions with, and physical changes within the elements of the couple should not alter its calibration. No thermocouple proposed to date exhibits simultaneously all of these characteristics, whereas the couple about to be described fulfills all requirements to a satisfactory degree.

THE MOGOLLON mining district, New Mexico, has received little public attention, although for 15 years it has been the leading silver producer of the state; it is situated in a region remote from the principal lines of travel, and its activities have usually been limited to the operations of two or three companies. The value of the total production of the district in the 44 years of its history has been estimated at $15,000,000. For the years 1904 to 1917, inclusive, the output was: gold, $4,370,000; silver, 10,042,000 oz.; copper, 874,862 lb.; total value, approximately. $10,500,000. In 1913 the district contributed 80 per cent. of the total silver production of New Mexico, but in 1917 only 41 per cent., due to serious interruption in the operations of the leading producer. Since 1914 the silver output has diminished one-half, and the present high value of silver is nearly offset by the increase in cost of production. The output of gold has rarely exceeded 35 per cent, of the total for New Mexico. The ratio of silver to gold, by weight, has averaged 46:1 based on the whole output of the district. LOCATION AND TOPOGRAPHY The town of Mogollon is 75 mi. (121 km.) by a poorly located highway from the nearest railroad terminals, at Silver City and Tyrone. All supplies are transported by motor trucks and teams. The area, sometimes called the Cooney Mining District, lies on the western flank of the Mogollon Mountains, which occupy the western part of Socorro County. The elevations drop steeply on the west to the valley of the San Francisco River, adjacent to the Arizona boundary. The topography is very rugged, the whole area being sharply dissected; deep canyons with steep gradients and rugged walls are characteristic of the whole western-slope of the Mogollon Range. INTRODUCTION IN a series of papers, the authors and their associates have shown that the technical cohesion limit is affected by the same four factors that affect the flow stress, namely, the stress system, plastic deformation, temperature, and the strain rate.16-28 Moreover, each of these factors affects the technical cohesion limit in the same way that it affects the flow stress.‡ The influence of any one of these factors may be represented by a curve of cohesion limits, although only one point on the curve may represent actual fracture. As the term "fracture stress" has come into use with the same significance as "technical cohesion limit," the authors are here using the shorter term with the understanding that it does not always refer to actual fracture. This paper presents the results of an investigation of the flow of notched and unnotched specimens between yield and fracture. A study has thus been made of the flow and fracture of metals as affected by the stress system, and of the ductility of metals as affected by the stress system throughout plastic deformation. Since two of the principal stresses were equal (S2 = S3), the stress systems can be represented in terms of the radial stress ratio, the ratio of the transverse radial stress S3 to the longitudinal stress Sl.* The results of the experiments are represented by a series of complete flow-stress curves for each of the metals investigated, and these diagrams have been used for the development of other diagrams of various types. Ludwik was the first to suggest that fracture occurs when the flow stress becomes equal to a technical cohesion limit. Although Ludwik was incorrect in his view that the technical cohesion limit depends only on the amount of plastic deformation and not on the stress system, he was correct in his view that the flow-stress curve for any stress system terminates at a point representing a technical cohesion limit. The authors have seen some recent references to assertions by other investigators that a point representing the fracture stress need not be on the flow-stress curve. The Ludwik principle, however, would seem to be axiomatic, provided that the flow stress and fracture stress are properly defined and that the fracture stress is properly determined. Disregard of this principle has led to some untenable theories of criteria for fracture. When a metal is very ductile, the conventional method of determining the ductility and fracture stress by dividing the breaking load by the sectional area after fracture, generally gives values that are much too high. In an address delivered at Atlantic City, N. T., Dec. 5, 1918, M. L. Requa, General Director, Oil Division of the United States Fuel Administration, said: We face a new era with all its uncertainties. We have arrived at the period of reconstruction and are face to face with the problems concerning which we have so often speculated during the past four years. In all this reconstruction work the United States must bear an important part. We are looked upon to lead the way, to blaze the trail and our actions will have a profound influence upon the rest of the world. If we are to succeed, even in part, we must not be ashamed to practise economy; we must not despise the clay of small things; the little savings; we must have the closest cooperation between Government and industry. Just as truly do we need civic awakening. All that we have ever fought for, the liberty of the world, is comprehended in the ballot; and yet how lightly we have held this great privilege! We need, if we are to reap in full the benefits of the past 18 mo., an awakened civic consciousness; a jealous guarding of government; a resolution that we will, each and all, perform to the full the duties imposed upon us by Democracy; that we will perform more completely the obligations resting upon us as citizens. During the war, industry, through sane cooperation and intelligent effort, has accomplished results possible of attainment in no other way. Government and industry have worked hand in hand and pointed the way o to future activities which, if realized, can but be most highly beneficial to all. If Government and industry are to fulfill their respective duties satisfactorily, it is obvious that there should be complete mutual confidence. Industry must not attempt to "put something over"-and Government must treat with industry upon the high plane that has characterized the public utterances of the President during the war. INTRODUCTION The purpose of coal preparation is to improve the quality of coal to make it suitable for a specific purpose by (1 ) cleaning to remove inorganic impurities; (2) sizing-crushing or screening, or both; or (3) special treatment, such as dedusting. The properties and quantities of impurities in coal are of major importance in the design and operation of steam generating equipment. Al- though boilers are often designed and equipped to use a wide range of coals, no boiler will perform equally well with all types of coals. All coals have certain properties that place limitations on their most advantageous use. These limitations are especially stringent for many of the older installations. Because of a general lowering of quality of raw coal in recent years, the need for coal cleaning has significantly increased. Among the factors contributing to the need for increased coal preparation are (1) increased demand for quality brought on by market and environmental requirements; (2) increased extraneous dilution caused by mine, health, and safety laws; and (3) depletion of the higher-quality coal seams.

RECENT papers by Williams, Sherwood, and Boothby,1 Seybolt et al.2 Heikes; and Roberts4 attest to the increasing importance of the hexagonal ferromagnetic compound MnBi. Since the magnetic properties of MnBi crystals are highly anisotropic, it is useful and necessary to have appropriate aids for determining their orientations—a (00.1) standard stereographic projection and a corresponding table of crystallographic angles for this structure. The tables of crystallographic angles for the hexagonal system available in the literature5 are computed for c/a ratios greater than that of MnBi and cannot satisfactorily be used to find the crystallographic angles of MnBi. A table of angles between the crystallographic planes (HK.L) and (hk.1) was calculated for MnBi from the formula0 F=are cos Hh+Kk+ 1/2(Hk+hK) + 3/4 (a/c)2Ll/v(H2 + K2 + HK + 3/4 (a/c)2L2) (h2+ k2+hk + 3/4 (a/c)2l2) on an IBM Type 650 Magnetic Drum Data Processing machine. The lattice constants used are listed in Table I and are those determined by Willis and Rooksby7 at 20°C. More recently published values obtained by both X-ray and neutron diffraction"' show no difference from these significant to the calculation. From the crystallographic angles between the basal plane (00.1) and the general plane (hk.1) in Table I, an (00.1) standard stereographic projection was made for MnBi which is shown in Fig. 1. THE first paper1 of this series described a technique of careful surface preparation by means of which reproducible results may be obtained from potential measurements of the behavior of tin in carbonate solutions with a pH range from 8.4 to 11.2. It then went on to establish the behavior of pure tin electrodes under these conditions and showed that the metal remains active at all times, though the steady potential attained after several hours decreases from I.I2[t] volts at a pH of 12.6 to 0.6 volts at a pH of 8.4. This behavior may serve as a norm with which all other data can be compared. In the second paper,2 small amounts of other anions were added to the carbonate solutions and the conclusion was reached that the common impurities encountered in alkaline materials packaged in tin do not increase corrosion. In fact, in some cases these anions may actually promote the formation of protective films. The present paper rounds out this survey by presenting data on the influence of cations added to the carbonate solutions, as well as the effect of alloy additions to the tin. In many cases the potential data are supplemented with weight-loss measurements. Information is also presented on the effects of some additional anions, the influence of gases above the electrolyte, the behavior of high-purity tin, and the effect of atmospheric oxidation on the corrosion resistance of the above-named alloys. Analysis of the entire body of data discloses some general rules applicable to corrosion in carbonate solutions. The experimental methods used are the same as those previously described. EXPERIMENTAL DATA Cations.-The carbonates of the cations K+, Li+, NH4+, which are soluble, were studied in the same way as the anions, by adding 0.01 mol of the metal carbonate to one liter of 0.2 M sodium carbonate solution, pH 11.2, or to 0.1 M sodium bicarbonate, pH 8.4. The other metallic carbonates are only slightly soluble, of the order of 0 7-3 mols per liter or less, and the sodium carbonate solutions were saturated by adding excess reagent several days before the experiment, shaking frequently, and filtering just before use. The chemicals were c.p. grade in each case except the indium salt. This salt was prepared by solution of the metal in hydrochloric acid and precipitation by addition of Na2CO3. These cations may be divided into two classes, according to their effect on the potential behavior of the tin: (I) normal, (2) passive. To offer a basis of comparison, curves I of Figs. A tremendous volume of the metal rolled annually into sheets strips and coil stock finds its way to a host of stamping and manufacturing plants which are the quantity production units of the country. Considerable in volume, too, are the rolled and extruded rods which go into forging and manufacturing plants for conversion into the same general line: those widely sold metallic necessities and luxuries of the household, the office, transportation, farming and building construction. Yet, in spite of its age and its importance, the stamping trade has been doing its "engineering" largely by trial and error. Its distinctive method is shearing out and plastically working metal to finished shape in a few quick strokes with high loads and expensive tools which are warranted only by large quantities to be produced. The principal operations have many features In common with rolling and wire-drawing methods. Combinations of stresses are diffcrent, however, and details of operations are infinite in variety. An engineering study of the subject begins with stress analysis, but must go back to metallurgy for its foundation. A grouping of pressed-metal working operations according to whether the metal is (1) sheared, (2) bent, (3) drawn or (4) squeezed has proved useful. All of these groups include instances of both hot and cold operations. For discussions of metal working properties, the division between hot and cold working is taken as the recrystallization range of temperature. This, of course, brings tin, lead and often zinc into the hot-work range at or near room temperature. The outstanding hot-working press field is in forging: particularly of brass; all of which is included in the squeezing group. Shearing Operations The shearing group of operations, including blanking, piercing, trimming, shaving, slitting, shearing, notching, parting and numerous variations and combinations of these enters once or more into the production schedule of practically every stamped or forged article.
