Efficacy of Enhanced Gravity Separator in Processing Indian Iron Ore Slime The slime sample was subjected to concentration using Falcon concentrator for their enrichment. The effects of three important variables, eg bowl rotation frequency, back water flow rate and per cent solid were studied on the process performance. Increasing the rotation of the Falcon bowl, enable more material to the underflow by increasing the yield, whereas, the iron content decreases steadily with increasing the rotation of the bowl. The increase in the back water flow effectively removes the clay materials from the underflow at the expense of the yield. Similarly, increasing the per cent solid concentration in the feed produces a better product both in terms of yield and Fe content. Results show that EGS/Falcon can be used for processing Indian iron ore slime and producing pellet grade concentrate.

Determining the controls of high-grade mineralisation at Vera Nancy requires careful data collection and assessment on a global and specific deposit basis. The techniques developed over 60 years ago to analyse structure, grade and width data are just as applicable today and can be enhanced using modern geological modelling software. High ore grades at Vera Nancy are controlled by both the primary geometry of the mineralised structure and the intersections of the main mineralised veins with subordinate splay veins. The main mineralised structure dilated as a consequence of extensional tectonics while the splays acted as conduits bringing oxidising surficial fluids into mixing zones precipitating high gold grades. Near-mine exploration is focussed on identifying zones of vein flexure and splay interaction to locate the relatively small high-grade shoots. Data modelling in a 3D environment is an essential process for understanding the geometry of the system being explored.

Ausmelt top submerged lance technology is at the cutting edge of technological developments in non-ferrous metal smelting with commercial operations throughout the world. The Technology is being used for lead smelting, copper smelting and matte converting, fuming zinc from slags, recycling iron residue from zinc plants, processing the aluminium industry hazardous waste SPL , precious metal processing, nickel-copper residue smelting and converting, and tin smelting. The Technology is also being developed for projects involving iron-making and waste industry opportunities. There are 19 furnaces operable or under design at the time of writing. The benefits to operators using Ausmelt Technology vary depending on application, but typically result from environmental improvements, enhanced recovery of valuable products, lower capital and operating costs, more flexible operations capable of handling a wide range of feed materials, better removal of impurities, or improved product quality. Growing industry acceptance of the Technology is evidenced by the fact that more than 20 per cent of the worldÆs tin production will be extracted in systems using Ausmelt Technology when the Yunnan Tin Corporation plant starts up in 2001. Metallurgists, industrialists and investors have accepted the Technology for improved operations in both greenfield main smelters and add-on plants in Korea, China, Japan, Germany, Peru, Zimbabwe, India, Namibia and Australia. Ausmelt intends that this paper will update the industry by outlining recent achievements of the Technology in global metallurgical operations.

The Osborne Mine commenced production from an open pit in December 1994 with the first ore being hauled from underground one year later. Currently all ore is hauled up a decline by trucks until the shaft system is commissioned in early-1998. The mine is hosted within a multiply deformed and complex sequence of metamorphic, igneous and metasomatic rocks of mid Proterozoic age that are concealed beneath 20-40 metres of Mesozoic sedimentary cover. Epigenetic and largely hypogene copper - gold mineralisation occurs in a close spatial relationship with quartz - magnetite ironstones and is an important example of a significant mineralisation style in the Mt Isa inlier. Life of mine concentrator production, to year end 1997, totals 3.2 Mt of ore at 3.40 per cent Cu and 1.13 g/t Au. Total metal produced was 97 000 tonnes of copper and 2900 Kg of gold (95 600 oz) from some 348 000 tonnes of dry concentrates averaging 28.01 per cent Cu and 6.99 g/t Au. At the start of 1998 OsborneÆs total measured and indicated resource was stated at 11.38 Mt at 3.24 per cent Cu and 1.21 g/t Au with an ore reserve of 11.42 Mt at 2.90 per cent Cu and 1.09 g/t Au. Exploration efforts in and around the mine have been increased since 1996 and have resulted in an early success, with a 28 per cent increase in ore reserves since mine start-up, and the establishment of a 1.5 Mt inferred resource open to depth. During 1997 the performance of the concentrator has exceeded expectations with throughput having been increased to 1.45 Mt per annum. The Mining Cycle at Osborne has proceeded from discovery through feasibility and is currently seen to be in the latter part of the development stage and/or the early part of an expansion stage. This paper will describe the role of geology and exploration within these stages and will highlight how a number of key interpretations and decisions based on geology have both favourably and unfavourably affected the project.

"Water evaluation and management during mining exploration and operational activities is crucial to minimise direct and indirect operational costs and also in delivering mining companies the less tangible, but equally critical æsocial license to operateÆ.Mining is often carried out in remote areas, where the mine will be the most significant and visible user and potential contaminator of water resources. However, wherever it is located, a mineÆs use of water must be managed in the context of two key aspects: the natural parameters of the resource; its abundance, its temporal variability and its chemical and physical qualities other users of the resource; other industry, potable water supplies and ecological requirements of local habitats.It is vital, therefore, that this commodity be assessed to an appropriate degree to help establish the viability and sustainability of the mining project and identify those other stakeholders who may be affected by the mining companyÆs activities.This paper outlines the background to catchment-scale model and presents a cost-effective method for establishing a robust water baseline and creating a water management tool to be used throughout whole mine life cycle. Numerical surface and groundwater modelling has long been established as a tool for reactive management, following collation of yearsÆ worth of data. Now, using freely available remote sensing data and desk study information, analytical modelling techniques can be used cost effectively to provide mining companies with a tool for assessing and managing their water consumption requirements at the outset of a new project venture.The paper includes a selection of case studies to show how the use of analytical modelling can be used as an evaluation and management tool to help not only assess general watershed parameters and water availability but also how it can be used as a tool to provide decision makers with the information to complete æwhat if?Æ scenario assessments. WMC was a late entrant into Indonesia in mid-1996, but had considerable experience and success in exploring in Asia, particularly the Philippines since 1988. Given the geological similarities to the Philippines and IndonesiaÆs superior æcradle to graveÆ Contract of Work (CoW) tenure system, the entry into Indonesia was a logical decision but nonetheless a result of detailed planning. At the time of WMCÆs entry, Busang in Kalimantan was still a 60 moz wonder and the euphoria of this apparent discovery had overflowed into every aspect of exploration. Many junior mining companies and tenement speculators were clamouring for properties in Kalimantan, whilst other serious and capable explorers had to compete for properties and exploration personnel in an era of high and often unrealistic expectations. The picture in late-1998 and through 1999 is dramatically different, as the worldwide downturn in the price of most metals coincides with financial and social crises throughout most Asian countries. The impact of this has been particularly severe in Indonesia and when coupled with the negative sentiment of the Busang fraud has resulted in an exodus of junior companies and also some of the majors. This is understandable given the much publicised social unrest, uncertainty of government, mooted changes to the eighth generation CoW, increasing illegal mining and heightened community expectations. The reality however is somewhat different and although clearly a crisis in many respects, it is also a time of great opportunity.

Southland contains over 70 per cent of New ZealandÆs recoverable coal resources, and an investigation into the potential effects of coal mining on SouthlandÆs water resources is therefore of interest. This paper investigates pit-lake water quality in relation to current mining activities within the sub-bituminous coal and lignite deposits of Southland.   Water quality data was collected from pit-lakes in sub-bituminous and lignite deposits from October 2005 to March 2006. After periods of settled weather, turbidity increased with depth at the sub-bituminous pit-lake (10 - 21 NTUs from 5 - 30 m). In the stratified sub-bituminous pit-lake in March 2006, heavy rainfall caused higher turbidity in the epilimnion than the top of the hypolimnion (20 NTU vs 13 NTU) reflecting surface water runoff (up to 1993 NTUs) and epilimnion mixing. In contrast, turbidity at the lignite sites was variable due to the shallowness of the lakes, but noticeable increases following disturbance and adverse weather were recorded. High turbidity at the sub-bituminous deposits was attributed to the presence of clay minerals such as kaolinite whereas turbidity at the lignite sites was more likely short term and a result of heavier minerals such as quartz.   Trace element concentrations at both sites were low when compared to mine waters in other coal areas in New Zealand and no samples exceeded ANZECC water quality trigger values for 80 per cent species protection. Pit-lake water pH levels were lower and more variable in the lignite deposit (4.18 - 7.30 vs 7.24 - 8.98 in the sub-bituminous deposits). In the lignite pit-lakes, higher concentrations of trace elements (eg Dissolved As - 0.034 ppm and Dissolved Mn - 1.09 ppm) and lower pH (ÿ4) were observed at the bottom of active pits compared to inactive pits. It is possible that quartz pebble conglomerates containing sulphide minerals within the lignite seams are responsible for this.   Further investigation into the mine waters, waste rock and lake sediments will help get a better understanding of the results observed and long term processes that occur.

"Roasting of sulfide concentrates and refractory ores is an important process step in the production of metals and chemicals. Sulfides of iron, zinc, copper and other metals are oxidised with air between 600 and 1000¦C into metal oxides or sulfates and gaseous sulfur dioxide. Roasting of gold concentrates and ores is a typical processing step used to produce a porous calcine suitable for cyanide leaching. During roasting, elements posing problems are removed through: oxidation (carbon, sulfur, arsenic and antimony) or volatilisation (mercury, chlorides and tellurides, as well as arsenic and antimony).This paper focuses on the environmental aspect of roasting using fluidised bed technology. The approach is to show that roasting is an attractive solution for refractory ore pretreatment since, on the one hand, it is an efficient technique yielding high gold recovery rates, while on the other it is able to comply with current stringent international environmental regulations. In that respect, roasting is compared to alternative processes, ie pressure oxidation (POX), bio-oxidation (BIOX) and ultra-fine grinding (UFG). Roaster high gold recovery rates are ensured through roasting-leaching test work, which allows the derivation of respective roasting parameters that are easily achieved in an industrial plant. On the other hand, key elements of the roasting process are analysed, which make it an efficient and sustainable technology, ie the possibility for energy recovery, the removal of off-gas impurities during the different gas cleaning steps (handling of arsenic, mercury emissions and further hazardous dust and gas emissions) and the treatment of the SO2-gas in order to produce sulfuric acid, and finally the treatment of the effluent produced. In order to increase productivity and decrease reducing agent rate (RAR) of blast furnaces, slag content of sinter ore must be decreased. However, gangue content in iron ore tends to increase because of resource depletion. Therefore, amount of high-grade concentrate in sinter ore feeds should be increased, but this situation causes a decrease in permeability of the sintering bed so that the productivity of sinter process decreases. In order to increase the amount of concentrate, NSSMS has developed the P-type separate granulation method, RF-MEBIOS and SPEx II technologies. These technologies have been introduced to actual sintering machines. In this report, a new technology using microparticles of iron ore is proposed to increase the amount of concentrate in sinter blends. Basic experiments simulating the sinter making process using microparticles of iron ore were undertaken. Crushed pisolite, containing >60 wt per cent -10 µm was prepared for binder. The pisolite microparticle binder was mixed with another Australian sinter feed ore in a high-speed agitating mixer. They were mixed for about one minute, and then granulated using a pan pelletiser. After that, they were added to another raw material mixed by a drum mixer, and then charged in a pot for a sinter pot test. Following the Coalbrook Colliery disaster in 1960, Salamon and Munro (1967) established the well known empirical coal pillar strength formula in South Africa. This formula has prevented further violent multiple pillar failures. In 1996, a back analysis of the collapsed and uncollapsed cases in Australia led to the development of the Australian empirical coal pillar strength formulae. The original collapsed and uncollapsed coal pillar database of Salamon and Munro (1967) was updated in 2006. This study introduced various strength formulae for different coalfields and seams in South Africa through back analyses of collapsed and uncollapsed cases. Today, the resultant pillar strength formulae from these previous studies and the behaviour of coal pillars are mostly well understood and applied with confidence. However, it was assumed in the previous studies that the behaviour of pillars is not time dependent; therefore, the formulae established do not provide an associated time to failure of coal pillars. This paper attempts to evaluate the so called 'Geometrical Limits' concept to provide the Australian coal mining industry with a tool to assess the long-term behaviour of bord and pillar workings where the pillars are prone to failure due to spalling of ribs. In order to achieve this outcome, the principles of the safety factor concept and the probability of failure calculated using the coal pillar strength formulae have also been evaluated and practical design examples are presented in this paper.

Over the past few years, there has been an emerging relationship between business and civil society, especially NGOs. This relationship has the potential to bring about significant change, identifying common ground between commercial and societal interests. The mining industry has been a leader in acknowledging the need for community consultation and engagement. This paper argues that partnerships can make a very significant contribution to the industry as it comes to terms with the dilemma of an open economic system pushing against a closed ecological system.The paper will pose a number of questions: where is the locus for debate about sustainability in the mining sector?; how well embedded within companies are the new competencies that Leon Davis first identified in 1995 for the mining sector?; how has education for mining engineers or exploration geologists changed to prepare people for what are very different expectations within the working environment?; how well is the industry doing in managing its own environmental impact and what is its responsibility to an agenda for sustainability which extends beyond its own operations?;and how can NGO partnerships contribute to more sustainable outcomes? The paper does not aim to answer these questions, but to explore them in the hope that the issues and possibilities raised will contribute to advancing progress towards sustainability within the industry.

"As of 1 December 2014, the 2012 edition of the JORC Code requires Ore Reserves to be defined by studies at the pre-feasibility or feasibility level. This paper examines how the pathway for most mining developments is determined in the Pre-Feasibility Study and how a trade-off must be made between the need to make the best decision, the constraints of limited time and resources, and the level of the project’s accuracy and uncertainty in terms of value. Issues considered include framing the scope of the study, planning for robust decision-making and ensuring effective communication between the diverse disciplines within the team.An inherent conflict exists between the immediate value added to a mining business from an increase in ore reserves resulting from a ‘quick’ Pre-Feasibility Study and the long-term value of pursuing a development strategy based on proper investigation and evaluation of the options. Recognition and resolution of this conflict is necessary if a project is to progress into future development stages, both in a timely manner and with the optimal development alternative and strategy.The challenge for project developers and those conducting the Pre-Feasibility Study is to understand what the key deliverables are (ie an Ore Reserve statement, option selection, business evaluation, forward work plan or risks) and how to follow good practice to ensure that these deliver value.CITATION:Logan, D J and Jackson, J, 2016. The Karara Mine concentrator commenced operation in November 2012 to produce high-grade magnetite concentrate. The circuit consists of three stages of comminution plus magnetic separation at each stage for early gangue rejection. High-Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGRs) are used for fine crushing, followed by ball mills and TowerMills in secondary and fine grinding duties respectively. In recent times, the plant throughput rate has had to exceed design by 18% to maintain the targeted concentrate productivity. Meanwhile, the ore hardness has increased by 25% to 15 kWh/t, leading to changes in the circuit operation and design. These changes led to coarser and harder feed to the TowerMill circuit that affects the subsequent separation processes. Nippon Eirich (the TowerMill manufacturer) has partnered with Karara Mining Limited (Karara) to optimise the TowerMill circuit operation to achieve a circuit product with an 80% passing (P80) of 35 µm. Several activities, including a TowerMill circuit audit and performance evaluation, multi-component analysis, modelling and simulation, were carried out as part of the optimisation exercise. The circuit audit results revealed that the TowerMill circuit feed size F80 had increased and ranged from 67–75 µm. The circuit product P80 ranged between 42–55 µm. The average circuit specific energy was 3.4 kWh/t. Moreover, the differences in density between magnetite and gangue minerals had affected the hydrocyclone performance where the efficiency curve exhibits coarse end deflection indicating that low-density coarse material was bypassing to the overflow stream. A multi-component analysis was carried out to further investigate the coarse end deflection of the hydrocyclone efficiency curve. The analysis showed that the magnetite and gangue minerals had different cut sizes of 32 and 64 µm respectively. Furthermore, 33% of the magnetite (below 35 µm) was being recycled back to the mill due to the density effect. Based on these findings, several recommendations for process improvement were identified and implemented including:• converting to a bottom feeding configuration to improve the grinding efficiency in the mill• additional grinding power in the fine grinding duty to compensate for the increase in plant throughput and ore hardness• improved classification efficiency by converting to smaller size hydrocyclones. Simulation studies carried out to evaluate the impact of these implementations had indicated that a P80 close to 35 µm with a steeper size distribution could be achieved by using the bottom feed configuration with additional grinding power. The TowerMill circuit was converted to bottom feed configuration and the performance was evaluated. The operating work index, size specific energy and circulating load were 30% lower than the top feed configuration, indicating that the bottom feed configuration had a higher grinding efficiency. A comprehensive analysisof rock structures in non-oriented (axially oriented) drillcore is now available (Laing, in press). The system embodies new concepts which better equip the geologist and engineer to deal from the outset with optimising the acquisition of structural information in drillcore, logging, interpreting, and graphically presenting the results. The few existing techniques for determining orientations of structures are augmented by a wide range of new techniques, and all are brought together into two solution types by considering the underlying Euclidean geometries. Analysis of these solution types in terms of what data are required to implement each solution and what assumptions need to be made, leads to strategies which facilitate intelligent design of different drilling programs for blind and outcropping situations. Drillcorc is variably structurally fertile, depending on the number of different structures present. This concept fosters the selective logging only of the more fertile core. Drillholes are also variably fertile, depending on their orientational relationship to the structures in the host rocks. Structural parameters are either vectorial or non-vectorial. Vectorial structures parameters comprise normal structural orientations plus polar vectors like vergence, younging, shear sense and so on. They can be determined by one of two solution types: external solutions, which use an external reference structure to fix the drillcore and thus permit orientation of all structures within that core, and internal solutions, which use orientational data from a selected structure at three or more different drillhole orientation to determine the unique orientation of that structure, without reference to any external structure.

The geochemical properties of Kaiata Mudstone and Brunner Coal Measures are evaluated in order to determine their suitability for placement at the proposed Cypress and existing Stockton mines. Correct scheduling of this waste material is needed in order to prevent sulfide oxidation and the generation of acid rock drainage. The Kaiata Mudstone has both acid generating and acid neutralizing properties. Results from this study and previous research from Kingett Mitchell Ltd (2003), indicate that within the Kaiata Mudstone sulphur content decreases with distance away from the Brunner Coal Measure/Kaiata Mudstone contact, while calcium carbonate content increases; sulphur values range from 0.33 to 4.23 wt %; and the acid neutralizing capacity ranges from 0 to 10.4 wt %. The Brunner Coal Measures have a low capacity to neutralize acid and sulphur content is variable ranging from 0.25 to 3.5 wt %. Appropriate control measures are therefore needed for the Brunner Coal Measures and any Kaiata Mudstone within close proximity to its contact. Tests have been undertaken to develop a rapid field or laboratory procedure to define the potentially acid-forming from the non-acid-forming Kaiata material. Results indicate that paste pH, Net Acid Generation (NAG) and Carbonate Bomb tests are suitable. Results from the Carbonate Bomb Test show a strong relationship with the Acid Neutralizing Capacity (ANC) and the Net Acid Production Potential (NAPP), indicating that this method may efficiently determine non-acid forming material in the field within fifteen minutes. Ongoing research includes kinetic column and shake extraction tests. These tests will quantify what trace elements could be leached from the waste rock and provide information on the usefulness of alkaline producing products such as Bauxsol, Limestone and Cement Kiln Dust.

The Tropicana deposit was discovered in 2005 after AngloGold Ashanti followed up an unexplained gold-in-soil anomaly. Discovered in a remote, barely-explored area of Western Australia not previously thought prospective for gold, Tropicana is the most significant gold find in Australia for more than a decade. The new, large scale open pit gold mining operation will produce an annual production of around 330 000 to 400 000 oz over a ten year mine life mining around 60 Mt/a.Process plant construction started in early 2012 and is due to finish in the December 2013 quarter. The mining contract was awarded to Macmahon Holdings (Macmahon) and mining commenced in July 2012 using conventional drill and blast, truck and excavator open cut methods.As a construction and start-up project in a greenfields location, the establishment of mining activities at Tropicana Gold Mine (TGM) involves the implementation of technical and operational systems, including the mining contract. Some of these systems and likely challenges were identified during earlier studies, while others were not foreseen until they were encountered. Alternatively, the time frames around implementation change depending on the changing knowledge of the project and industry environment. These systems include those common to the industry and those specific to the operation and location.This paper examines the implementation and development of a number of the systems specific to the establishment of mining operations, including the history, process and some outcomes. Although expected to be discrete systems to implement, they become interdependent.
