COALTECH 2020 initiated a research project to provide the coal mining industry with a modelling tool to determine the expected types of subsidence, risks and the investment required in post-closure funds to cater for subsidence associated with bord and pillar mines. A detailed literature review was conducted to determine the most important parameters in calculating the cost associated with surface subsidence. A subsidence prediction model was developed to determine the likelihood of different types of subsidence. The study made use of current knowledge of failure mechanisms and its aim is to assist the industry and government in arriving at the most suitable arrangements when authorities require financial instruments to assure compliance with environmental regulations.

This paper summarizes the results from a project aimed at adapting scroll centrifuges for application to the dewatering of flotation concentrates. The main impetus for the project was to reduce the high cost and footprint size of the technology currently used to dewater fine coal. The technical challenge was to enhance solids capture by incorporating a laser-cut screen into the design of the basket. The project has shown that a pilot-scale scroll centrifuge can be used to dewater froth concentrate. A number of different basket designs were tested, the best results being achieved with a basket comprising a laser-cut screen of aperture 70 µm. The best result on a sample of untreated flotation concentrate, which was taken from the open trough flotation cells at a coal preparation plant (CPP) in NSW was a solids recovery of 82 wt% at a product moisture of 24.3wt%. By comparison the best product achieved with a conventional wedge wire basket was a similar moisture content but solids recovery was only 64 wt%. This could only be achieved after the feed had been artificially thickened. Conditioning of the centrifuge feed with polymer flocculants led to an increase in recovery up to 88 wt% with a moisture content of ca 25 wt%. It is thought that optimizing additive selection and conditioning parameters, as well as screen aperture and open area, could improve performance still further. The results were obtained using centrifuging conditions (centrifugal force, feed solids, feed rate) in the pilot-scale machine which should be possible to translate into conventional designs of commercial scale machines, without downgrading solids throughputs. However only with full-scale trials will it be possible to establish this assertion with certainty.

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B Tech (Engineering Metallurgy) degree This investigation relates to a multi-purpose electrolytic system. Its primary purpose is to electrowin gold from high or low concentration gold cyanide solutions and/or from gold sludge, and to convert the recovered gold into a gold (alloy) electroform or electrode at the gold mine itself. These operations are carried out sequentially and in situ in the same electrolytic cell. Electrorefining of the gold recovered may also be done in the cell. The system applies to silver as well, and may be adaptable to base and platinum group metals. It could also be used in environmental applications, to remove undesirable metals present in aqueous solution at very low concentration. The work to be discussed forms part of recently filed patent applications. Subsequent and future developments of the system are briefly outlined. This paper provides an overview of possible approaches for structuring the ventilation systems for mines that will become operational within the next decade. Features addressed in the paper include: aspects of airway design and layout in the absence of centralized vertical return shafts, the impact of using diesel-powered trackless equipment in conjunction with conveyor belts in the development and production phases of the project, and the need to balance increasing electrical power costs against the requirement for reduced capital expenditure. The paper provides brief descriptions of the strategies employed in real-life situations and presents an overview of various operational parameters affecting the design of ventilation systems that will be used as ?platforms? for much deeper mines in the future.

In the latter part of the 1980s Outokumpu Chrome in Tornio, Finland, was in a situation when its twenty-year-old ferrochrome plant was becoming too inefficient to sustain economically sound production. The company made extensive studies on the then available processing methods to find out the best possible processing route. As a result, the whole plant was practically rebuilt and expanded. When equipment was proven in practical operation, an application for FeMn production was developed. Now as the Tornio FeCr-plant is considering expansion, the same type of exercise is to be performed with today?s challenges, which will be discussed in the paper. These challenges include increasing costs or decreasing quality of raw materials, increasing energy costs, stricter environmental regulations and demand for better working conditions. The possibilities of resolving to these challenges will be discussed in the paper. The future and continuing development with FeCr includes the better utilization of process dusts and a lower consumption of energy. By adapting the latest automation tools to better control the process, even higher efficiencies can be achieved with present technology. New processes are considered for development in the future and some possible technologies will be described.

The use of water-cooled copper components as sidewall elements of submerged arc furnaces and other pyrometallurgical applications has become increasingly common. The high cooling efficiency of copper has made it possible to increase the service life of furnace refractories when compared to conventional refractory linings. However, even the self-healing effect of ?freezing? worn areas of the lining does not necessarily protect the copper coolers against wear or corrosion completely. In order to avoid furnace explosions, various methods have been used to monitor the wear of coolers. Unfortunately, these have not been able consistently to identify localized wear. Thos Begbie (South African) and SAVEWAY (German) jointly developed technology to embed a line sensor into the copper cooler during the casting process. This system allows an exhaustive monitoring of the copper cooler. A SAVELINE sensor is placed inside the copper-cooling panel between the water-cooling passage and the hot face of the panel. The sensor follows the meandering shape of the cooling water channels. In the first instance, the sensor provides analogue information as the thickness of the copper reduces. Secondly, this wear signal will be confirmed by a signal of interruption if the sensor is washed away. Because of the structure of the sensor, a self-diagnosis is possible and indications can be confirmed (double proofed).Subsequent to the manufacture of some test pieces, coolers for a large submerged arc furnace were manufactured. The sensorized coolers have been installed at the intermittent surface (slag line) where the largest amount of corrosion has been encountered. The system has been operating since December 2005 in what is considered one of the largest submerged arc furnaces in South Africa. Theoretical flotation models suggest that there is a positive relationship between bubble-particle collision rates and turbulent kinetic energy dissipation. Fine particle flotation performance is generally enhanced by increased collision frequency and hence higher energy dissipation. Contrarily, increased turbulence in the rotor-stator region is related to higher detachment frequency of the coarser size range. Therefore, the optimal modes of recovery for the ?fine? and ?coarse? size classes appear to be diametrically opposed. Industrial applications have previously confirmed that applying greater power to flotation slurries yields significant improvements in fine particle recovery. However, recovery of the coarser size class favours a different flotation environment. An improvement in the flotation kinetics of the fine and coarse size classes, provided there is no adverse metallurgical influence on the intermediate size ranges, is obviously beneficial to the overall recovery response. Managing the local turbulent kinetic energy dissipation, and hence the power imparted to the slurry, offers the benefit of targeting the particle size ranges exhibiting slower kinetics. FLSmidth recently introduced the practical implementation of this concept. In principle, it decouples flotation regimes where fine and coarse particles exhibit preferentially recovery. In the case of naturally aspirated machines (Wemco®), it is referred to as Hybrid Energy Flotation? and incorporates at least three phases: ? Standard flotation machines (standard energy input, rotor speed (r/min), rotor size/type) at the beginning of the row, where flotation is typically froth-phase limited and operational and set-up parameters have a limited influence on the recovery ? Higher-powered flotation machines (high rotor speed, high-power rotor size/type) at the end of the row to improve fine particle recovery ? Lower-powered flotation machines (low rotor speed, low power rotor size/type) to enhance coarse particle recovery. A CFD-based flotation model is used to highlight the effect of turbulent dissipation energy on attachment and detachment rates. Preferential collection zones for ?fine? and ?coarse? particles are predicted for both forced-air and naturally aspirated machines. The greater predominance of UG2 ore types, coupled with the skewed feed distribution of platinum group metals (PGMs) to the finer size fractions, suggests that PGM flotation circuits are not designed for optimal recovery across the size distribution. The application of the hybrid energy concept to PGM flotation offers a possible shift towards a more efficient flotation circuit solution through a managed distribution of energy.

Prediction of pothole characteristics is a challenging task, confronting production geologists at the platinum mines of the Bushveld Complex. The frequency, distribution, size, shape, severity and relationship (FDS3R) of potholes has a huge impact on mine planning and scheduling, and consequently cost. It is with this in mind that this study was initiated. Quantitative analysis of potholes indicates that pothole size (area covered) can be described by two partly overlapping lognormal distributions. These are referred to as Populations A (smaller) and B (larger). The range of observed pothole sizes conforms to a simple double exponential growth model based on Newton's Cooling Curve. A third size range of very large potholes (Population C) that could not be modelled properly within the proposed growth model is interpreted as to represent a very early phase of aggressive regional thermo-chemical erosion and potholing. In general, potholes are dominantly quasi circular with only a subordinate tendency of elongation. In the UG2, potholes with elongated forms are more prevalent in the size range between 20 and 500 m diameter. In the Merensky Reef elongated potholes are more common in the size range above 50 m in diameter. Although not distinctly visible, elongation of potholes in both the UG2 and the Merensky Reef show a net north/south orientation. Using shapes of pothole rims and floor areas, documented for the UG2 in the Waterval Shaft area, it is demonstrated that the northern, down-dip edges of potholes have steeper dips than the southern, up-dip edges. Spatial distribution studies using a uniform quadrant method suggest that in both the UG2 and the Merensky Reef, the potholes are randomly distributed, with a tendency towards clustering. Clustering appears to be more prevalent in the smaller Population A potholes. Bearing all findings in mind, it is found that the model of thermo-chemical erosion of the cumulus floor by new influxes of superheated magma best explains the observed data. Partial to complete melting of the cumulate floor occurred in three phases. The first represents the emplacement of hot magma. This magma, due to turbulent flow and high chemical and physical potential, aggressively attacks the existing floor (crystal mush on the magma/floor interface). Regional erosion is manifested by large, often coalescing potholes. During the second phase, when the magma emplacement process ceased and cooling in situ started, two distinct periods of pothole formation ensued. The first is related to rapid cooling along the relatively steep part of the Newton Cooling Curve, when Population B potholes nucleated randomly and grew rapidly with concurrent convective overturn and largely laminar flow condition. The second period of cooling occurred on the shallow-dipping part of the Newton Cooling Curve. Population A pothole growth became more subdued and nucleation appears to have been, at least locally, clustered. The final phase of this proposed 'super magma cycle' was introduced when chromitite crystallization and precipitation terminated pothole formation. This was followed sequentially by pyroxene and plagioclase crystallization to form the typical cyclic units of the Critical Zone. No suitable proxy could be found for the prediction of pothole density of potholes associated with the UG2 (likely due to limited spatial data coverage), and these are best predicted by extrapolation. The Merensky Reef slope index, in contrast, provides a proxy for pothole density, enabling prediction with reasonable confidence. This predictive model has been verified using underground information. The findings made during the course of this investigation have, when implemented, significant impact. Successful implementation will not only allow enhanced resource and reserve definition, but also better mine planning and scheduling.

The international climate regulating environmental management in mining is rapidly evolving through the combined influences of the development of international guidelines, resolutions, protocols, treaties and conventions; the influences of the international lending and aid institutions who seek a consistent but constantly evolving standard of environmental performance from their clients; the legal precedents being developed in courts al over the world; and the activities of multinational countries who tend to rapidly upgrade technological performance through their international activities (particularly influencing developing countries). In this rapidly evolving regulatory environment, the more 'models' available to this international pool of resource materials that demonstrate practical. cost-effective and (most desirably) incentive based regulatory mechanisms, the better will be the eventual body of 'international standards' we will al have to work with. Australia can make a significant contribution to this process, however, it has only been on the margin of this dynamic, North American and European led process, up to this time. It is in the Australian minerals and energy industry's best interest to take an active part in the evolution and direction of this process.

The extraction of iron and lead from their oxides with a volatile organic ligand such as acetylacetone in the gas phase offers potential advantages of lower energy consumption, recycling of the extractant, recovery of pure metals, and a reduced environmental impact compared with conventional extraction processes. The influence of reaction temperature, ligand flow rate, and metal oxide levels on the extraction and rates of reaction of iron and lead from single metal oxide (synthetic haematite (Fe2O3) and synthetic massicot (PbO)) systems in a fluidized bed was studied. It was found that at the investigated acetylacetone flow rates, the influence of mass transfer was limited, but that the reaction suffered from reactant starvation. When the metal load increased the effect of starvation on the rate of reaction also increased. The reaction kinetics increased with an increase in temperature for both systems. At low metal oxide concentrations more that 80 per cent of the iron and lead could be extracted from their respective metal oxides after only four hours.

It has been noted in recent years that the pillars in some bord-and-pillar workings scale or spall. In due course this process may result in the collapse of the affected panels. This paper presents a methodology for assessing the long-term behaviour of such workings, employing a simple model of pillar deterioration by scaling. It is assumed that scaling causes a gradual reduction in pillar width, hence the safety factor of pillars reduces in time. It is also postulated that the process of scaling will be arrested if the coal rubble around the pillar reaches a critical height. The probability that the pillars will survive for a certain period of time, or indefinitely, can be estimated. This can be accomplished by using the log-normal distribution proposed by Salamon and Munro4todescribe the distribution of the apparent safety factor values at failure. If an estimate of the rate of scaling is known, it is also possible to quantify, using a Monte Carlo technique, the expected life of the pillars. The method also facilitates pillar design by specifying a probability of survival for a given number of years or, alternatively, for an indefinite period. Using the limited pool of available data, analyses show that the proposed model does not appear to be inconsistent with observed behaviour of pillars in the Vaal Basin. The crucial parameter is the rate of scaling. Back calculations from eleven cases suggest that the rate of spalling in the Vaal Basin is about 0.2 m/year. It is noteworthy that two further cases in the same area give significantly higher rates (0.85 m/year). Some underground observations in the Witbank area indicate considerably lower rates in the order of 0.02?0.04 m/year. Further areas for study are recommended. These include a study of old workings to determine the extent and rate of scaling in the various coal fields, an investigation into the possible relationship between scaling and the chemical composition of the coal. In addition, model studies will be required to assess the practical impact of the research findings.

The first documentary evidence for the use of fire to extract a metal was furnished by the wall paintings of the ancient Egyptians showing workers using the blowpipe and bellows to increase the temperature to melt gold in a crucible. Furnaces grew in size and complexity, coke replaced charcoal in the blast furnace, and the Industrial Revolution took place in England that gradually spread worldwide. More metals became known and new techniques were introduced for their extraction. Among these, metallothermic reactions became prominent in the nineteenth century immediately after the discovery of the electric current and its use to liberate the alkali metals from their salts. Once these metals became available, they were used to produce aluminium from alumina that resisted all other methods of attack. Aluminium, now available on a large scale, was used to decompose the most stable compounds and liberate more metals that became the basis of modern civilization.

Mining has always been, and still is, an activity which is vital for the development of mankind. This is because a predominant proportion of industrial products and energy is produced from raw materials that are excavated using mining methods. The need for environmental protection and the close proximity of urban settlements and mines in Slovenia have necessitated ever stricter requirements for the excavation of raw materials and introduction of more environmentally-friendly mining methods. This is achieved by implementing a closed eco-technological cycle of raw material excavation within the scope of mining methods. In surface mines, this means prompt reclamation of the degraded surfaces, and in underground mines the use of methods with minimized impact on the surface and on underground water. In underground mines, mining methods with backfilling installed according to the multi-barrier disposal system are the only ones that allow the possibility of implementing a closed eco-technological cycle of excavating raw materials. Various industrial waste materials are also included in the backfilling material in order to improve its strength properties. Backfilling consisting of several different waste materials is produced in the form of a composite. Before backfilling consisting of waste material composites can even begin to be used in mines, an environmental impact assessment of its suitability for mines needs to be made. In order to make such an assessment, a pressure leaching cell and an open diffusion cell were made, i.e. a pressure leachate test and a sorption test were developed. The two cells and the developed tests will enable the study of the influence of backfilling on the environment if installed in an underground mine. The pressure leachate test performed with the use of the pressure leaching cell simulates leaching from a consolidated backfill during the seeping of underground water into the backfilling material under pressure. The sorption test performed in an open diffusion cell simulates the flow of eluate leached from the backfilling material through the rock/geotechnical barrier. The two tests were developed in such a manner that they are performed either in succession immediately after one another, but they can also be performed separately at a certain time interval. The paper presents an assessment of the suitability of backfilling made of different waste material composites. The mechanized mining cycle using loaders and shuttle cars had its peak in terms of usage in the mining industry during 1950 through 1960. In Brazil, this system is still used at underground coal mines in southern Santa Catarina coal basin. With the aim of investigating the benefits of a new mining scheme using the room and pillar method for these local mines, a computational simulator model was developed in order to investigate the mining cycle. This paper presents the methodology used to develop the simulator and the results that the simulation shows regarding impact of the proposed new scheme on mining productivity.

This paper discusses the current approaches to modelling the DMS cyclone within the De Beers group. Current efforts are split into short term value-adding process understanding and longer term semi-fundamental analysis of separation mechanisms. To date, the basic applied approach has yielded significant value to the group, enabling operators to focus on simple diagnostic measures to control their process. The more involved modelling approach has given rise to a new understanding of the separation field, in particular that the high density gradients within a cyclone are highly localised, indicating that separation of medium to heavy density material takes place low in the cone. The model has proven to be conceptually robust, but still requires further development and validation to become a complete modelling and simulation tool for De Beers.

In Brazil, this system is still used at underground coal mines in southern Santa Catarina coal basin. With the aim of investigating the benefits of a new mining scheme using the room and pillar method for these local mines, a computational simulator model was developed in order to investigate the mining cycle. This paper presents the methodology used to develop the simulator and the results that the simulation shows regarding impact of the proposed new scheme on mining productivity.

The following notes have been compiled to assist authors in the preparation of papers for presentation to the Institute and for publication in the Journal. All papers must meet the standards set by the Council of the Institute, and for this purpose all papers are referred to at least two referees appointed by Council. STANDARDS FOR ACCEPTANCE To merit consideration papers should conform to the high standards which have been established for publication over many years. Papers on research should contain matter that is new, interpretations that are novel or of new significance and conclusions that cast a fresh light on old ideas. Descriptive papers should not be a repetition of well-known practices or ideas but should incorporate developments which would be of real interest to technical men and of benefit to the mining and metallurgical Industry. In some cases a well prepared review paper can be of value, and will be considered for publication. All papers and particularly research papers, no matter how technical the subject, should be written with the average reader of the Journal in mind, to ensure wide interest. The amount of textbook material included in a contribution should be the minimum essential to the argument. The length of a paper is not the criterion of its worth and it should be as brief and concise as possible, consistent with the lucid presentation of the subject. Only in very exceptional circumstances should a paper exceed 15 pages of the Journal (15 000 words, if there are no tables or diagrams). Six to ten pages is more normal. NOTE: Papers in the Journal are printed in 10 point type, which is larger than the 8 point type used on this page. For special publications Council may decide on page sizes smaller than A4 used for this Journal. The text should be typewritten, double-spaced, on one side only on A4 size paper, leaving a left-hand margin of 4 cm, and should be submitted in duplicate to facilitate the work of the referees and editors. General: A few well selected diagrams and illustrations are often more pertinent that an amorphous mass of text. Over-statement and dogmatism are jarring and have no place in technical writing. Avoid the use of the first person, be objective and do not include irrelevant or extraneous matter. Avoid unnecessary use of capitals and hyphens, while punctuation should be used sparingly and be governed by the needs of sense and diction. Sentences should be short, uninvolved and unambiguous. Paragraphs should also be short and serve to separate basic ideas into compact groups. Quotation marks should be of the 'single' type for quotations and "double" for quoted matter within quotations. Interpretations in the text should be marked off by parentheses ( ), whereas brackets [ ] are employed to enclose explanatory matter in the text. Words to be printed in italics should be underlined singly. For small capitals they are to be underlined DOUBLY and for large capitals TREBLY. If there is any problem in producing formulae accurately by typewriter they should be inserted by handwriting in ink in the copy forwarded by authors. Abbreviations and symbols are laid down in British Standard 1991. Abbreviations are the same for the singular and plural, e.g. cm for centimetre and centimetres, kg for kilogram and kilograms. Percentages are written in the text as per cent; the symbol % is restricted to tables. A full stop after an abbreviation is only used if there is likely to be confusion of meaning. Metric System: The Systeme International d'Unites (S.I.) is to be used for expressing quantities. This is a coherent system of metric units derived from six basic units (metre, kilogramme, second, ampere, kelvin, and candela), from which are derived all other units, e.g. the unit of force is the newton (N) for kilogramme metre per second per second (kg m/s2). Always use the standard metric abbreviations. Commas must not be used for separating groups of digits. For ease of reading digits should be grouped in threes counting from the decimal point towards the left and the right. Illustrations: Drawings and diagrams are to be in black India ink and should be about 18 cm wide. When submitting graphical representations avoid a fine grid if possible. Curves should be in heavy line to stand out. Lettering too should be bold as a reduction in size is often involved in the printing process. (A single column is 8.5 cm wide.) Numbering of tables should be in Roman numerals: I, 11, etc. and figures in Arabic numerals: Fig. 1, Fig. 2, etc. (Always use the abbreviation for figure.) Photographs should be black and white glossy prints. As a guide to the printer the author should indicate by means of notes in the typescript where tables and figures, etc. are to appear in the text. Paragraphs: A decimal system of numbering paragraphs may be used when the paper is long and complicated and there is a need for frequent reference to other parts of the paper. Proof correction: Galley proofs are sent to authors for the correction of printers' errors and not for the purpose of making alterations and additions which may be expensive. Should an author make alterations which are considered excessive, he may be required to pay for them. Standard symbols as laid down in British Standard 1219C should be used. SYNOPSIS It is most important that the synopsis should provide a clear outline of the contents of the paper, the results obtained and the author's conclusions. It should be written concisely and in normal rather than abbreviated English and should not exceed 250 words. While the emphasis is on brevity this should not be laboured to the extent of leaving out important matter or impairing intelligibility. Summaries simplify the task of abstractors and therefore should present a balanced and complete picture. It is preferable to use standard rather than proprietary terms. FOOTNOTES AND REFERENCES Footnotes should be used only when they are indispensable. In the typescript they should appear immediately below the line to which they refer and not at the foot of the page. References should be indicated by super-script, thus. . .1 . . .2. Do not use the word Bibliography. When authors cite publications of other societies or technical and trade journals, titles should be abbreviated in accordance with the standards adopted by this Journal. GENERAL The Council will consider the publicatiol1 of technical notes taking up to three pages (maximum 3000 words). Written contributions are invited to the discussion of all papers published in the Journal. The editors, however, are empowered by the Council to edit all contributions. Mrazovka tunnel was excavated under one building whose subsurface space was not possible to reinforce against additional settlements induced by digging. In the presented contribution the risk analysis, warning levels and results of deformation measurements are described. Lespace souterrain d‘un des bâtiments sous lequel le tunnel Mrazovka a été creusé n‘a pu être renforcée contre l‘affaissement supplémentaire provoqué par l‘emplacement du tunnel. Le matériel présenté décrit l‘analyse des risques, le niveau des limites et les résultats des mesures des déformations. Der Untergrund eines der Gebäude, unter dem der Tunnel "Mrazovka" ausgeschachtet wurde, war es nicht möglich, gegen nachträgliches Setzen zu versteifen, hervorgerufen durch die Untertunnelung. Im vorliegenden Beitrag sind Gefahrenanalyse, Grenzwerte und Ergebnisse von Deformationsmessungen beschrieben.
