Arizona construction aggregate industry remains in the crosshairs of public debate, caught between the need for aggregate-based building materials and alternative, high-value land-uses. To better manage lands and improve land-use decisions, the Arizona State Land Department has need for a system to assess potential aggregate resources on State Trust lands, and assign dollar values accordingly. Thereafter aggregate values can be compared to residential, commercial, agricultural, recreational, and habitat values -- in a determination of highest and best land-use.

E. Douglas (Dept. of Scientific and lndustrial Re-search, Warren Spring Laboratory, Hertfordshire, England) — The authors are to be congratulated on the considerable improvements they have made in tailoring efficiency and selectivity terms which are generally superior to the alternative forms in current use. However, I feel that their efficiency expression is limited to lower-grade feeds; its accuracy reduces as the feed grade increases. For example, its application to such processes as the beneficiation of glass sands, refractories and clays will invoIve considerable inaccuracies. The reason for this lies in the direct use of recovery, which, with high-grade feeds, biases their empirical expression, R(1 - c/h). With a 90% grade feed, the recovery weighting for the slightest degree of beneficiation, over a zero efficiency sampling operation, will be 90+%+ I disagree with their second basic requirement which states that there can be no fundamental basis for any single quantifying expression. A formula giving a comprehensive representation of concentra- tion efficiency can be derived fundamentally accord-to the procedure outlined in the literature. Rejeitos de mineração descartados na forma de polpa possuem, geralmente, grande quantidade de água e reutilizá-la no processo, por meio de operações de desaguamento mais eficientes é de grande importância para a implementação de projetos de menor impacto ambiental. O presente trabalho visa estudar as operações envolvidas no desaguamento de um rejeito de níquel, com o objetivo de principalmente a maximizar a recuperação de água de processo. Para tanto, foram avaliados: a influência da concentração de sólidos, uso e dosagem de floculante, pressão no filtro, o processo de filtração com e sem prensagem e a influência destas variáveis na umidade da torta e na recuperação de água. Os resultados mostraram que quanto maior a dosagem de floculante menor é a recuperação de água na filtragem; por outro lado, quanto maiores a concentração de sólidos e a pressão, maior a recuperação de água. Verificou-se a importância do uso da prensagem para maximizar a recuperação da água contida no sedimento, sendo possível comprovar que o rejeito de níquel floculado e filtrado com ?P de 6 bar com o uso de prensagem promoveu a recuperação de até 77% de água.

This paper deals with application of the wave equation analysis to determine capacities of piles driven in saturated sandy soils. It shows that pile capacity in sandy soils changes with time after the completion of pile driving and depends on the ground water elevation. In saturated sandy soils the setup coefficient ranges between upper and lower curves represented by power functions. For a reliable prediction of pile capacity wave equation input should be adjusted with soil damping. Back calculation of soil damping from known pile capacity performed for five tested piles shows that skin damping coefficient changes with time in the same manner as the pile capacity and can be represented by the power functions for considered damping models.

Com a perspectiva do uso de aços API em ambientes sour service, o controle de inclusões e precipitados é essencial para bom desempenho. A precipitação de carbonetos e nitretos de Nb e Ti, assim como a formação do MnS foram analisados criticamente em aços de alta resistência e baixa liga – HSLA- com Mn entre 0,3 e 1,6%, Nb 0,02-0,1%, S 0,001-0,005% e Ti 0-0,02% em peso. Os valores da temperatura de precipitação do MnS, Nb(C,N) e Ti(C,N) foram obtidos por meio do software ThermoCalc™. A partir desses resultados, possíveis tendências da precipitação foram discutidas e relacionadas com a temperatura de não-recristalização, traçando um comparativo entre temperaturas de processo e precipitação. Três aços produzidos com a composição estudada atenderam os requisitos mecânicos de tração da norma API 5L X65M.

The Copper Canyon lead-zinc mine is in the Battle Mountain. District, Lander County, Nev. It was discovered in 1866 and mined for copper until 1935 and for copper and gold until l948, when the main production became lead-zinc ore. The rocks in the area are carboniferous (Pennsylvanian and Mississippian) sedimentaries that have been intruded by quartz monzonite of Mesozoic age. They have been intensely folded, faulted, and tilted. Lead-zinc ore occurs as sulfides disseminated along fractured zones in a conglomerate arid hornfels. Development was carried out by the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the U. S. Geological Survey and comprised a study of the geology, making maps and. cross sections, and exploring the deposit by diamond drilling from underground. Eighteen holes were drilled, for a total of 2,594 feet. This report contains a brief history of the property and a description of mining methods and beneficiation of the ore, geology, ore deposits and drilling done by the Bureau of Mines. It also contains detailed analyses of the ore samples taken and logs of the holes drilled.

The Bureau of Mines has been active in promoting the purchase of coal for Government use under specifications that define the requirements in terms of heating value of the coal, expressed in British thermal units, and the composition as shown by proximate analyses. To these, when required, are added the ash-softening temperature, the free-swelling index, and the Hardgrove grindability index. Under most of these specification contracts the bidders guarantee the quality of the coal, and that guaranteed by the successful bidder becomes the standard of his contract. The deliveries are sampled in accordance with instructions4/ issued by the Bureau of Mines; the samples are analyzed in the Bureau laboratory to determine whether the coal is of the quality guaranteed by the contractor and, if it is not, a price adjustment is made. Analyses of the delivered coal and tipple samples (samples collected at mine tipples as coal is being loaded into railroad cars or trucks) provide valuable data for use in evaluating future bids. In addition, the continuous .sampling of coal as delivered is a check on the practical results obtained in burning the coal.

This study was conducted to determine the effects of a machine-mounted scrubber and water sprays on face methane levels. Testing was conducted in the NIOSH ventilation test gallery which was designed to simulate a full-scale mine entry. In the test entry, a model mining machine, equipped with water sprays and a simulated dust scrubber, was located at the face of a 20-ft box cut. Blowing ventilation was provided using a curtain with a 40-ft setback distance. Methane released from a pipe manifold located inby the mining machine was monitored at six locations that were 1 ft outby the pipe manifold. Tests were first conducted to evaluate the effects of using sprays and scrubber separately on face methane levels. Additional tests were conducted to determine how a scrubber used with various water spray systems would affect face methane levels. The use of either sprays or scrubber reduced face methane levels significantly. The combined use of sprays with the scrubber further reduced face methane levels a small amount. Primarily the sprays affected methane levels by changing airflow distribution close to the face.

The proper selection of a coal for a particular use depends on knowledge of fundamental data concerning the coals that offer, particularly their type and rank. Type of coal depends on the nature of the original plants and the environment in which they accumulated.Rank reflects the subsequent metamorphism of the coal, and is of two kinds-physical rank and chemical rank.INTRODUCTIONIn the different coalfields of the Commonwealth of Australia there occur many different kinds of coal which provide the coal-research worker with a wide range of material, but to the fuel technologist they represent complex problems in utilization.In the past it has been common practice to instal coal-using equipment of a design based on plant used in large industrial centres of other countries and then search for supplies of suitable coal. This has led to the transportation of coal mainly from New South Wales to other States, which have inadequate supplies of coal suitable for use in the equipment they have installed. However, modern economy and industrial practice demand local resources of coal for the development of industry, transport and domestic services, and a change in the old order is rapidly taking place. Technologists and engineers are now faced with the problem of designing and installing equipment to use whatever kind of coal is available in local coalfields.Much has been accomplished in this direction and important investigations are at present being carried out, but there still remains a wide field of problems for research.In planning and carrying out investigations into coal utilization it is essential that fundamental data and knowledge should be available and that its significance should be appreciated.

This report discusses fire-resistant hydraulic fluid safety from three different directions. First, results of a survey prepared for the Fire Resistant Hydraulics Journal by the staff of the Fluid Power Research Center are analyzed. Second, operational limitations of fire-resistant hydraulic fluids are examined. Finally, laws and standards of various foreign countries are investigated. Three conclusions are derived from a close study of fire-resistant hydraulic fluid safety from these three directions. First, a significant number of experts in the fluid power industry are no in agreement about aspects of fire-resistant hydraulic fluid fire-resistance and toxicity. This indicates a need for more in depth research. Second, the use of fire-resistant hydraulic fluids involves a compromise between the decreased fire hazards and increased toxicity and machine incompatibility problems. Finlly, major foreign governmental agencies have thorough laws and standards concerning fire-resistant hydraulic fluids. These laws and standards may provide a solid framework for further international research into fire-resistant hydraulic fluid safety.

In 1960, Magnetics International Ltd. undertook the development of the Jones High Intensity Wet Magnetic Separator in the Americas. Magnetics International had a number of possible applications in its own projects plus the intention of developing the equipment for sale to others. It was soon recognized that no matter how innovative a piece of mineral separation equipment may be, it takes many years and much finance before it is finally accepted for large scale use. For this reason, many good ideas die in their infancy. One of the chief reasons for such a time lag between conception and large scale implementation is the usual lack of finance to construct and put into operation a large demonstration unit. Even with a large unit for demonstration, the first major user usually requires a guarantee that is not normal in accepted separation equipment. Such problems are also normally accompanied by major design changes from the first conception.

At the Copper Cliff Smelter, Inco Limited has extensive experience in converting primary smelting mattes over a broad range of nickel/copper ratios and compositions. In the past 35 years, technology developments at Inco have reduced the number of Peirce-Smith converters in Nickel/ Bulk (nickel-copper matte) service from 13 to the current 5. This paper will discuss: ? The performance and life of ?stretch? 13.7m shells versus conventional 10.7m converters. ? Process control and information system development from the early 1980?s to view converter aisle status on a continuous basis to the recent central control of the stretch shells. ? Nitrogen cooling of finishing matte from plant testing to implementation in the early 1990?s to replace the dedicated cooling converters. ? The development of research activities at Risdon and the implementing of a policy of instrumentation in plant processes have, in recent years, entailed a considerable increase in research staff and created an urgent need for more space and modern laboratory facilities. The existing laboratories have been in use for 25 years and are now inadequate. New buildings have been authorized.The new buildings will comprise, firstly, a laboratory building of three floors giving a totai .floor space of approximately 11,000 sq.ft., and a pilot plant building as an annexe to the laboratory building, of approximately 4,900 sq.ft. The laboratory building will accommodate from 20 to 22 research workers, and additional plant operatives will be used for the control of processes in the pilot plant building. The new buildings are designed to provide facilities for three principal functions; the investigation and improvementof existing processes, the development of new processes up to the pilot plant stage, and the control and maintenance of instruments.LOCALITY AND ORIENTATION OF BUILDINGSThe site of the buildings is elevated ground on the eastern side of the main plant, near the main entrance and general office building. Dense medium drum separator efficiency was analysed at two Western Australian iron ore concentrators. Efficiency data had hitherto been difficult to accumulate due to the high cost of analysing representative, and therefore large, coarse ore samples. To overcome this problem, recoverable density tracers, which are in effect artificial mineral and gangue, were manufactured in three different sizes (15 mm, 30 mm and 60 mm). Their use enabled partition curves to be studied within one hour of conducting a test: separation densities were generally lower than the feed medium density for all three sizes of density tracer. For a given set of operating conditions, the smaller tracers had lower separation densities and larger ecart probab/es than the large tracers. These phenomena are explained with the aid of a conceptual model of a drum separator, which assumes that the feed ore plunges to the bottom of the drum upon introduction. Particle rising velocities are, therefore, process determining.Medium rheology was altered by adjusting the proportion of solids in the pulp. This was accomplished by changing both the pulp density and ferrosilicon/magnetite ratio. Higher solids volume fractions invariably caused a decrease in separation densities and an increase in ecart probables, most markedly for the smaller tracers. A similar response was observed when feed tonnages were raised.An explanation for these phenomena is sought in the discussion which also suggests means of improving drum separator efficiency.

The Heartland Corridor Clearance Improvement Project is part of a regional Public-Private initiative to allow double stack container trains a direct route from the Port of Norfolk through Virginia, West Virginia, Eastern Kentucky and into Central Ohio. The project involves clearance improvements to twenty-eight tunnels, twenty-one of which require structural modification. With construction of the first Package of tunnels just underway at press time, this paper summarizes the program implementation from design through the initial stages of construction.
