The Rossio railway tunnel was built in 1890 crossing several formations involving limestones, basalts and also sandy and clayey formations. Due to the fact that it is an old underground structure rehabilitation and repair works were performed, namely at Km 0,900 and in a zone crossed by a new tunnel from the Lisbon Metro. Reinforcement support systems were designed in the Rossio tunnel in order to prevent its stability. In this paper, repair works and anchor tests performed at km 0,900 are presented, as well as the monitoring system implemented in order to observe the structural effects induced by the construction of the works. For the interpretation of the obtained information complex 3D models was built, permitting the simulation of the sequential excavation scheme used, non-linear behaviour of the different formations, and the support systems used. Der 1890 erbaute Rossio Eisenbahntunnel durchoertert mehrere Formationen, einschliesslich einer Kalkstein-, Basalt- sowie einer sandigen und tonigen Formation. Auf Grund des Alters des unterirdischen Bauwerks wurden Instandsetzungs- und Reparaturarbeiten im Bereich km 0,900 sowie im Kreuzungsbereich mit einem neuen Tunnel der Lissabonner U-Bahn durchgeführt. Aussteifungssysteme wurden entworfen, um die Stabilität des Rossio Tunnels zu gewährleisten. Im Folgenden werden die Instandsetzungsarbeiten und Anker Tests im Bereich km 0,900 sowie das Messystem zur Ueberwachung der strukturellen Auswirkungen der Bauarbeiten dargestellt. Zur Interpretation der gewonnenen Informationen wurden komplexe 3D Modelle entwickelt, die eine Simulation des Bauablaufs und die Anwendung nichtlinearer Stoffgesetze fuer die verschiedenen Formationen und Aussteifungssysteme ermöglichten. Le Tunnel ferroviaire du Rossio a été construit en 1890, traversant des différents terrains comme des calcaires, des basaltes et aussi des formations limoneuses et sableuses. Dû à l’ancienneté de l’ouvrage, des travaux de réhabilitation et réparation ont été faits, nomment au km 0,900 et dans la zone traversée par le nouveau tunnel du Metro de Lisbonne. Des systèmes de support renforcé ont été conçus pour le Tunnel du Rossio de façon à rassurer sa stabilité. Dans ce papier, on présente les travaux de réparation et les essais d’ancrage réalisés au km 0,900, et aussi, le système d’auscultation mise au point pour l’observation des effets structuraux induits par les travaux. De façon à interpréter l’information résultant de l’observation, des modèles 3D complexes ont été utilisés, permettant la simulation de la méthode séquentielle de l’excavation, du comportement non - linéaire du terrain et, aussi les systèmes de support utilisés.

"World-class mine projects are increasingly failing to become world-class mines. Non-technical, socio-political and environmental problems seem, in part, to be the cause. However, the intangible and qualitative nature of these problems means overcoming them will require a greater systemic understanding of how the various technical and non-technical factors interact. This is particularly important as the concept of sustainable development has changed the industry paradigm sufficiently that it is no longer clear what world-class means. Finally, this better systemic understanding of mine projects needs communicating back to the exploration sector to improve exploration targeting.However, a disconnect between the exploration and mining sectors and between geologists and mining’s other professional disciplines means this is currently not possible. The use of economic evaluation techniques to assess the risk and value presented by the various technical and non-technical factors can assist with this by giving the varied professions a common language and including inputs from all disciplines. This paper therefore suggests a theoretical framework for analysing the various technical and non-technical factors, particularly the most challenging intangible and qualitative ones, and incorporating them into the typical economic evaluation techniques used in the mining industry.Understanding the risk and value relating to both technical and non-technical risks, however, places a greater emphasis on mining geologists to be conversant with a wide range of disciplines. Mining geologists will have to develop three types of knowledge:focusedinter-disciplinarybroad. In addition, they will have to become systemic thinkers to connect these types of knowledge. This multidisciplinary approach will require the use of fundamental critical thinking skills, common sense, intuition, experience and quantitative modelling techniques, dependent on the situation. F. C. Bond: This is an outstanding paper on comminution theory and represents a considerable advance in mathematical formulation. It clears the way for a discussion that should ultimately decide whether the work index should be considered as a parameter according to the Third Theory or as a constant. In the empirical differential equation dE = —Cdx/x [1] either Corn must be treated as a variable to satisfy known crushing and grinding conditions. The author has chosen the exponent n as the variable, with C as a constant. According to the Third Theory, in the general case n is a constant equal to 3/2, and C is a variable related to the work index Wi. If x is placed equal to P (the size in microns which 80 pct of the product passes) and F is the size 80 pct of the feed passes, then C equals 5 W1, and dE = 5 -5 Widx/x = 10 Wi 10 Wi w = vP vF which is the basic equation of the Third Theory. It is apparent that this integration involves the error of treating the parameter Wi as a constant, just as the author's treatment involves the error of integrating his variable n as a constant. These errors are probably relatively unimportant, considering the small range of the variables. When more is known about the factors contained in the work index, Eq. 1 can be revised as a partial differential equation. The Third Theory exponent of 1/2, or n = 3/2 in the Charles' differential equation (Eq. l), was not chosen primarily because it is the average between the Kick and Rittinger exponents; this may be merely fortuitous, since it is illogical to define truth as the average between two errors. It was first discovered from the study of a large mass of crushing and grinding data and confirmed by laboratory testing. The general correspondence of the Third Theory equation to actual crushing and grinding results over the entire size reduction range argues strongly that a fundamental phenomenon is involved. The a posteriori theoretical explanation of the constant Third Theory exponent is that the work done in breaking rock is proportional to the length of the crack tips formed. Compressive force applied to the rock results in deformation and strain energy. When this locally exceeds the breaking strength a crack tip forms, the surrounding strain energy flows to the crack tip and extends it to split the rock, with release of the energy as heat. Under rapid impact the crack tip may form before the strain has reached equilibrium, resulting in less energy expenditure and probably a coarser product. In any case, the elastic limit of a brittle material is practically the same as its breaking strength, and the work necessary to form the crack tip is the work required to break. The crack length of a ton of broken rock cannot be measured directly. However, the particle shapes of feed and product are similar, and the crack length is considered equal to the square root of one half of the new surface area formed. It is, therefore, proportional to 1/vD, where D is the equivalent product particle diameter. This is the basis of the Third Theory equation. Many secondary factors can be imposed upon the crack length breakage. These may cause the Third Theory work index to increase or decrease somewhat as the product size becomes finer. The work index is properly a parameter rather than a constant, making it an increasingly valuable practical criterion of the work input required in crushing and grinding.

Accurate prediction of truck productivity plays a pivotal role in improving the efficiency and profitability of openpit mining operations. This paper proposes a deep neural network (DNN) model to overcome the challenge of predicting truck productivity in openpit mines. The prediction model was built using eight variables and was optimized by considering different train-test split ratios, numbers of hidden layers and neurons, and activation functions. The proposed model’s performance was evaluated using various metrics and compared with other commonly used machine learning algorithms. The results showed that the proposed model outperformed traditional machine learning models by achieving higher prediction accuracy. Moreover, a single-variable sensitivity analysis showed that haul distance is the most influential variable for predicting truck productivity. This study marks a pioneering effort in employing DNN to predict truck productivity in openpit mining, signifying a notable advancement in the field.

ABSRACT: In this paper numerical simulation of jointed block mass behaviour obtained in an experimental study has been presented. Singh et al. (2002) conducted extensive tests on the jointed model materials with several joint configurations. The results of this experimental study were used to validate the strength behaviour of numerical block mass model developed using professionally available software. This software basically contains different kinds of material models. From the results of numerical simulation the existence of strength anisotropy was observed. The strength anisotropy so obtained has been compared with the experimental values reported by Singh et al. (2002). The anisotropic curves in both cases are U-shaped with flat base. They show good agreement in sliding mode of failure zone in which inclination ß (= 90° - ?) of joint set-I lie between 20° to 40° for all cases of interlocking. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: In dieser numerischen Papiersimulation des verbundenen Blockmasse Verhaltens, das in einer experimentellen Studie erhalten wird, ist dargestellt worden. Singh et al. (2002) leiteten umfangreiche Tests auf den verbundenen vorbildlichen Materialien mit einigen gemeinsamen Konfigurationen. Die Resultate dieser experimentellen Studie wurden verwendet, um das Stärke Verhalten des numerischen Blockmasse Modells zu validieren, das mit professionell vorhandener Software entwickelt wurde. Diese Software enthält im Allgemeinen unterschiedliche Arten der materiellen Modelle. Von den Resultaten der numerischen Simulation wurde das Bestehen von Stärke Anisotrophie beobachtet. Die Stärke Anisotrophie also erreicht ist mit den experimentellen Werten verglichen worden, die von Singh et al. (2002) berichtet werden. Die anisotropen Kurven in beiden Fällen sind mit flacher Unterseite u-förmig. Les résultats de cette étude expérimentale ont été employés pour valider le comportement de résistance du modèle numérique de la masse de bloc développé en utilisant le logiciel professionnellement disponible. Ce logiciel contient fondamentalement différents genres de modèles matériels. Des résultats de la simulation numérique on a observé l'existence de l'anisotropie de force. L'anisotropie de force ainsi obtenu a été comparée aux valeurs expérimentales rapportées par Singh et autres (2002). Les courbes anisotropes dans les deux cas sont en U avec la base plate. Elles montrent la bonne concordance dans le mode coulissant de la zone d'échec en lequel la inclination ß (= 90° - ?) du joint placez-Je le mensonge entre 20° à 40° pour tous les cas d'enclencher.

Few persons ever stop to consider how vital an influence minerals, and especially metals, have had upon human history, how they have affected the every-day life of the individual or how at different periods they have altered the course of nations and determined their progress. Students and writers of history have dealt very fully with political history and have given us a great deal of detail about the careers and policies of kings, parliaments and nations, but frequently have not touched the economic causes that have been the real forces influencing the development and carrying out of these policies. So far as minerals are concerned there is no single work from which one can get a concise and consecutive account of the growth in the use of minerals, nor of the diverse ways in which the. geographical distribution, the .search for, the development and the use of mineral resources have affected human progress from the beginning of man's history. The reason for this is quite plain, and when one takes a little time to think of it he begins to appreciate the magnitude of the job and he will realize that the story of minerals and mineral resources touches a tremendous range of human activity, not only of mining .and metallurgy, but the whole field of agricultural and industrial growth, of exploration and colonization, transportation and commerce, monetary system, commercial policy, in short, almost every phase of economic life.

SRC rockmass classification have been applied to 25 tunnels in Spain and Italy, for which it was found that much heavier supports than those estimated by the RMR index were required. SRC and RMR indices and other relevant geomechanical data were obtained during the site investigation and construction stages. Data corresponding to in situ stress measurements, analysis of tectonic structures, and instability problems arising during construction were used to asses the state of stress. The relationship between tunnel section convergence and the SRC and RMR indices was also analysed. Support measurements based on SRC and RMR classification were compared with those actually used during construction. These analyses indicate that for most of the tunnels examined, supports estimated using the SRC were much closer to those actually installed than those predicted by the RMR index. Bei der Verwendung des SRC-Systems zur Klassifizierung des Gesteins als Baugrund für 25 Tunnel in Spanien und Italien wurde festgestellt, dass viel schwerere Abstützungen benötigt wurden, als wenn die Beurteilung anhand des RMR-Systems angefertigt würde. Die Klassifizierung anhand des SRC- und des RMR-Systems, sowohl als auch andere wichtige geomechanische Daten wurden während des Ablaufs der Erkundungen und der Bauausführung gewonnen. Die Resultate der Messungen der Spannungen vor Ort, die Analyse der tektonischen Struktur und die Stabilitätsprobleme während der Bauausführung wurden dazu verwendet, um den im Felsgrund vorherrschenden Spannungszustand zu definieren. Das Verhältnis der Messungen der Tunnelkonvergenz zu dem SRC- und RMR-Index wurde auch analysiert. Die durch das SRC- und RMR-System vorhergesagte Grösse der Abstützung wurde mit der Grösse der Abstützungen verglichen, die am Bau letztlich verwandt wurden. Diese Vergleiche zeigen, dass für die meisten der studierten Tunnel die Vorhersage der Abstützungen, die anhand des SRC-Systems angefertigt wurden, viel näher der wirklich verwendeten waren als die Vorhersage anhand des RMR-Systems. "The bad effects upon the health and output of miners that result when the ventilating current in a mine lacks sufficient cooling power have been described by Harrington and Sayers in a previous report (1)*** The normal temperature of the human body is about 98.5°F. and whenever work is done by the muscles, indeed even when sitting still, the normal bodily processes generate heat which must be given off, otherwise the body will become overheated and a number of bad effects will be produced. If it were possible to so enclose a man that he could continue to breathe and no heat could escape from his body he would die within a short time. In a series of experiments made at the Pittsburgh Station of the Bureau of McConnell and Houghton (2) found that a dry-bulb and a wet-bulb temperature of 112.5°F could he borne for only 35 minutes, even when the subject was at rest. A wet-bulb temperature of 100.4°F (dry-bulb 157°F) could only be tolerated for 45°F minute. Under such conditions the bodily temperature rises as much as 45°F above normal and the pulse is accelerated. Very uncomfortable sensations are felt when the pulse rate exceeds 135. The human body, like any other internal combustion engine, must be cooled in order to function properly.Under ordinary circumstances the air surroundings people is enough coder than themselves to permit this heat generated within the boiy to be river off with¬out difficulty. At higher temperatures, or when the rate of work, with its corresponding generation of heat is high, the body can not throw off heat fast enough, so it begins to sweat and the evaporation of the sweat cools the body. But the results of the experiments cited above indicate that in still air, even with the body at rent, it can not adjust its temperature when the air is above 90° wet- bulb. J. S. Haldane (4) says ""at a wet-bulb temperature of 60°F the actual amount of work done by the miner begins to fall off; as the wet bulb temperature rinse farther the work Bona gradually diminishes to the vanishing point. Then the temperatures indicated by the wet-bulb exceeds 85°F hard work in a mine seems hardly or the commercial working of a mine the wet-bulb thermometer should not in generaI, be allowed to rise above 80°F, unless perhaps where there it a good current."

In planning activities, the aim has been to adapt the work to changing conditions and needs of the mining industries and to avoid becoming bound to any particular type of investigation when others are found to be of more pressing interest.

This work investigated the toughness behavior of polyester matrix composites reinforced with up to 30% in volume of long, continuous and aligned sisal fibers by means of Charpy impact tests. It was found that the addition of sisal fibers results in a marked increase in the absorbed impact energy of the composites. Macroscopic observation of the post-impact specimens and SEM fracture analysis showed that longitudinal rupture through the sisal fiber interface with the polyester matrix is the main mechanism for the remarkable toughness of these composites.

It is well-established that hydrostatic pressure distribution is hardly achieved during uniaxial compaction of powders. All the previous investigations1-4 give consistent results and this variation is attributed to the die-wall friction. The conclusions are based on measurements of the density of very small portions of the compact. Although the analysis of the density or the strain distribution in the compact is very helpful in obtaining information about the stress distribution within a powder compact, it does not describe the problem from a more fundamental point of view. The densification in metal powder compacts takes place chiefly by plastic deformation (ignoring particle rearrangement) at the points of contact of the powder particles. The onset of yielding and subsequent growth of the contact areas (for spherical powders) take place fixed by a constant stress equal to three times the yield stress in tension or compression,5-7 assuming little or no work hardening. Therefore, by deforming spherical powders in the die and measuring the contact areas on each particle, the load at each contact point can be determined. In the present investigation, this was done by hot-pressing uniform spheres of lead, K-Monel, and sapphire. The details of the experiment have been described elsewhere.' The spheres were studied for the size and the number of contact points on each particle using a specially designed goniometer. It was found that the deformed faces that were approximately normal to the direction of pressing were about 2.2 times larger than those parallel to the direction of pressing. Fig. 1 shows the typical deformed sphere. A detailed study showed that the mean value of the contact areas on each sphere was within 5 pct for all the spheres in the die (ignoring those touching the die walls and the top and bottom of the die).' The spheres touching the die walls and the top and bottom of the die were found to have larger contact areas (8 to 10 pct) which indicates higher pressures in these regions of the compact and thus higher compact densities in these regions. These results show that density distribution calculated from such an experiment will give results consistent with the previous investigators. "Increasing demand for timely and accurate information about flotation plant performance requires metal accountants to increase the scope and reporting frequency of plant production. This trend has brought in-process inventory estimation at the forefront of metal accounting issues. Such significant in-process inventories can be locked in diverse process equipment (bins, holding tanks, flotation cells, thickeners, pipeline, etc.) or in stockpiles (ore, concentrates, tailings, etc.). Practice has shown that boldly ignoring these in-process inventories or the errors associated with their estimation lead to unreliable metal balances thereby creating confusion in plant production planning and operational performance assessment. To this extent, the characteristics (physical bounds, spatial heterogeneity and residence time) as well as the available measurements (volume, density, humidity, mass, composition, etc.) of each unit/section found in a generic flotation plant are jointly reviewed with respect to the particular metal accounting issues they present. The daily and monthly metal accounting tasks are then reviewed together with possible methods for obtaining reliable inventory estimates including different procedures for end-of month reconciliation.INTRODUCTION Most of the cost reduction initiatives of the mining industry aim at improving capital efficiency and asset utilization. Among the possible paths through which these goals can be achieved are mine-to-metal optimization, real-time plantwide process control (Hodouin, 2011) and knowledge sharing databases (Bascur & Linares, 2006). However, the successful implementation and subsequent monitoring will ineluctably results in an increased demand for timely and accurate information. This more than often requires metal accountants to increase the scope and reporting frequency of plant metal production. A striking example of such scope expansion is the Minas-Rio iron ore project in Brazil (Anglo American, 2013) having a pipeline route of 525 km between the concentrator and the concentrate shipping area. Several other mining companies have also set an increased frequency for their key performance indicators thereby shrinking the metal accounting period from monthly to weekly and daily. Those concurrent trends have brought in-process inventory estimation at the forefront of metal accounting issues. Indeed, as illustrated in Figure 1, improving trading reactivity requires improvements in production planning which strongly impacts the requirements for reliable metallurgical accounting. Furthermore, practice has shown that boldly ignoring significant in-process inventories or the errors associated with their estimation can lead to unreliable metal balances. In other words, since metal balances are the cornerstones of metal accounting, some of the risks associated with important business decisions are linked to errors associated with in-process inventory measurements."

Construction projects are becoming more demanding both in terms of time and complexity. This necessitates intricate planning and sequencing of activities at the macro and micro level and continuous flow of resources across the project in order to achieve planned targets. Work and Resource planning need to be done in such a way that limited resources give optimal output. Currently dominant activity-based scheduling techniques like Critical Path Method (CPM) and Program Evaluation and Review Technique (PERT) do not model work-flow or resource-flow through a project life cycle. An extension to the conventional activity based planning is Location Based Management System (LBMS). LBMS has been explored and utilised in the case of repetitive and cyclic projects such as high rise buildings. This study focusses on the application of LBMS to repetitive and non-repetitive components of Power Transmission and Distribution (PT&D) projects involving construction of substation and cable laying. This paper presents the findings on comparing the current planning practice for cable laying with an LBMS based approach. A key finding of the study was that the conventional practice resulted in a schedule with several coordination issues that could not be identified in the planning reports. Using the LBMS based approach these issues could be identified and decisions required for resolving these could be made.

ABSTRACT This paper evaluates the potential of freeze-thaw dewatering using Albian mature fine tailings (MFT). Freezing tests were first performed to study the effect of freezing rate on dewatering efficiency. Lower freezing rate resulted in higher thawed solids content and shear strength. Subsequently, large strain consolidation tests were conducted to investigate consolidation behaviour and how it is affected by freeze-thaw. The consolidation behaviour was presented in terms of effective stress versus void ratio and permeability versus void ratio. The results can be used to predict the field behaviour of Albian MFT and optimize the application of freeze-thaw for MFT dewatering.

"Before the war, the United States was the world’s leading consumer of tin, the industrial applications of which had become widespread. Domestic production was negligible, and requirements were met almost entirely by imports, principally from British Malaya, United Kingdom and China. Average annual imports for the years 1925-1929 amounted to 78,009 long tons.With the advent of war in Europe and signing of the Japanese-German pact, it was realized that foreign sources of supplies were threatened, and steps were taken by Congress to forestall critical shortages of tin and other minerals. These steps in regard to tin included stock-piling, improving reclamation and conservation, increasing South American production, constructing a smelter in the United States for treatment of tin, ores, and intensifying the search for domestic tin deposits. Annual imports were raised to 140,873 long tons by 1941. On 1945, annual imports had shrunk to 37,675 long tons and consumption had been reduced to 52,100 tons of primary and secondary tin but not tin content of scrap alloy.The Strategic Minerals Act, passed by the Congress in 1939, authorized the investigation of domestic tin deposits.As Alaska had supplied virtually all of the domestic output of tin, an investigation of Alaska deposits was undertaken in 1940 and 1941 by J. B. Mertie, Jr., and Robert R. Coats of the Geological Survey.The Lost River lode tin mine on the Seward Peninsula was examined by H. E. Heide of the Bureau of Mines in 1942. Possibilities for developing a significant amount of tin appeared favorable, and exploration of the ore bodies was started in August 1942."

Technological advancements in electronic sensors and mine-wide monitoring systems have improved remote monitoring and analysis of underground mining information. The effective use of . these systems for ground control applications, however, remains a challenge facing the mining industry. The U.S. Department of Interior, Bureau of Mines is conducting research, utilizing real-time acquisition of rock mechanics data, to provide mine operators the means to rapidly identify and manage potentially hazardous ground conditions. The Bureau has installed a remote monitoring network in a Colorado coal mine to record Pressures from instruments installed in the roof and pi1lars of gateroads and from transducers on shield-legs along the face. The field data are being monitored at the Denver Research Center, 150 mi from the mine. A computer at the Center analyzes the field data and generates graphic displays, which permit detailed examination of mine-wide ground conditions in real-time. For the first time, Bureau researchers are able to perform real-time monitoring and analysis of rock mechanics data while mining is in progress. The data collection and display capabilities of the system were effectively used to identify and evaluate face stability problems at the mine.

Heat-related illnesses (HRI) are relatively common in both hot surface and underground mining operations. When workers are exposed to extreme heat or strenuous work in a hot environment, they become prone to heat stress. Heat strain is the result of the body’s response to external and internal heat stress. It is therefore vital for the conditions leading to heat strain be detected and treated in a timely manner. Heat-related illnesses are manifested by exhaustion and heat stroke. The predicted heat strain (PHS) [ISO 7933 (2004)] model has been developed to predict the health condition of the worker in terms of core body temperature and water loss. The PHS model tested in this study is based on eight physical parameters that are measured at different intervals during a work shift. They include air temperature, humidity, radiation, air velocity, metabolic rate, clothing insulation, posture, and acclimatization. The model predictions are then compared with a direct physiological measurement, such as core body temperature. We present the results of an extensive study that monitored and predicted body’s response to heat stress under different environmental and working conditions. The PHS model provided reliable results in most instances in comparison with other prediction methods currently in use in the field.

OCI Wyoming mines two flat-lying trona seams that are 3- to 3.5-m- (10- to 11.5-ft-) thick, about10 m (33 ft) apart and 250-m- (820-ft-) deep at its Big Island Mine in Wyoming. Continuous miners and a yielding-pillar system have contributed to improvements in resource recovery and productivity. The use of yield pillars minimizes the stresses transmitted from the upper to the lower seam. However, yielding must not impact the good, long-term stability needed to prevent subsidence for a large portion of the mine beneath the Green River channel.

"Lithium is the lightest of the metals, with high reactivity and great electrochemical potential. It has a low thermal expansion coefficient and high caloric value, and it forms very light and resistant aluminium alloys. These properties make lithium an attractive element for use in battery manufacture and glass and ceramics production, in addition to its applications in the aeronautic industry. Today, two sources of raw material are economically viable for lithium production: pegmatite rocks and brine. The world production, in 2012, was approximately 150,000 tons of LCE (lithium carbonate equivalent), almost triple the production in 2000. The forecasted consumption for the current year, 2013, was approximately 162,000 tons of LCE, and for 2020, it could be as much as 280,000 tons of LCE, stimulated essentially by the growth of world production of electric (EV), hybrid (HEV) and hybrid plug-in vehicles (PHEV), the batteries of which are based on Li-ions. With the growth of world demand and increasing prices, lithium minerals such as spodumene, petalite and amblygonite, once considered uneconomical for the production of lithium carbonate, are regaining their economic value. New projects to produce lithium compounds based on mineral sources are being developed in many countries, aiming to produce battery-grade lithium carbonate (99.95% Li2CO3). Although Brazil has large lithium pegmatite reserves, the domestic production of lithium carbonate and hydroxide is very low, at approximately 600 tons of LCE, which represents 0.4% of the world production. The application of these products is mostly in the grease and ceramic industries. The national lithium market is under government protection due to its potential use for nuclear purposes. Thus, the industrialization activities and import and export of ores and lithium minerals, as well as organic and inorganic products, such as metallic lithium and lithium alloys, are controlled by the National Commission for Nuclear Energy (Comissão Nacional de Energia Nuclear - CNEN). The objectives of this work to quantify the real lithium demand in the Brazilian market, considering that a large amount of lithium is indirectly imported in the form of the Li-ion batteries used in equipment such as mobile phones, cameras, tablets, notebooks and e-bikes, and to compare this demand with the current national production of LCE. Finally, some technological alternatives will be discussed, with the aim of increasing the competitiveness of the lithium industry in Brazil."

Four taconite plants were studied to establish the extent of hazard to plant personnel which exists based on long-term exposure to noise. The criteria for evaluation include the 90 dBA and 85 dBA summations of partial exposures. Data from extensive interviews were used to determine all work stations or locations which employees occupied and how much time they spent in ach location in a typical working day. Noise level measurements at every designated location were then made. By means of a computer program, these time and noise level data were us d to find the optimum noise reductions which would be required throughout each plant to meet both noise criteria. Subsequently, each plant was examined in detail so that the apparent sources of noise for each of the locations requiring noise reduction could be delineated. In tabular form, this report presents the hazardous locations for each plant, the existing noise level, the optimum noise reduction which would be required to meet the current and proposed laws, and the sources of noise which produce the existing noise level.
