Education in Australia now has to respond to a very wide political and policy agenda. The political emphasis is upon increasing participation and retention rates with a view to greater graduation rates in `high-tech' disciplines. There is an implied linkage between `education' and `economic well-being'. Our argument is that equalitarianism in education tends towards mediocrity. In this context many Geoscience educators view the future with pessimism. The argument is that science has been `sold short' and needs revitalising. We contend that Geoscience coursework should be a feature of both secondary and tertiary education in Australia. To this end we propose six policy initiatives to increase the content of Geoscience in education programmes.

Gasification is a process that converts a carbon feedstock into synthesis gas (CO+H2). Slagging gasifiers operate at high temperature and pressure and in a corrosive-wear environment from the slag. Cr2O3-based refractory linings are used to protect the steel vessel that comprises the gasifier from the aggressive gasification environment. Increasing service life of the gasifier is one of the keys for wide spread development of this technology. In support of the goals, research on the gasifier atmosphere, the slag chemistry, the interaction of Cr2O3 refractory with different feedstock mixtures (e.g., coal and petcoke) were characterized by post mortem analysis of bricks from service in gasifiers and thermodynamics simulation of the environment. Examples demonstrating how thermodynamic calculations can explain the post mortem results and make predictions of material interactions will be given. Attention is placed on the possibility of Cr+6 in different feedstock mixtures and operating conditions.

The search for precious metals opened up the American West. And Nevada was right in the heart of this development. In the mid-19th century, prospectors seeking gold roamed the hills of Nevada and discovered the ComstockLode. The development of this huge silver and gold deposit began in1859 and was responsible for Nevada’s early entry to statehood. Mining was Nevada’s first industry. In more recent years, the Nevada mining industry has led the nation in gold, silver and barite production. Nevada also produces many other minerals. These include aggregates, clays, copper, diatomite, dolomite, gypsum, lime and limestone, lithium and magnesium compounds, perlite, salt and silica. Even today, Nevada’s mining industry continues to be a major economic force in the state. The mining industry has made more than $10 billion in capital investments in Nevada since 1985. And the value of Nevada’s mineral production last year was about $2.7 billion.

A demanda por materiais ecológicos vem crescendo exponencialmente nos últimos anos. O potencial destes produtos é dado tanto pela versatilidade em seu uso quanto pela sua disponibilidade na natureza. Um dos materiais em expansão é o OSB (Oriented Strand Board), utilizado na vedação do Steel Frame. O trabalho tem como objetivo substituir em três porcentagens 15%, 30%, 45% das tiras de madeira do OSB convencional pela fibra do epicarpo do coco de babaçu (FECB), a fim de melhorar a resistência mecânica. Os resultados obtidos na chapa de 11 mm incorporada com FECB apresentaram resistência a tração entre 15 e 26 MPa e de flexão entre 42 e 75 MPa, tornando assim superiores ao produto encontrado no mercado.

Certain external forces affect the manner in which business is conducted. and in recent years changes in the business environment have altered how some of these external forces affect the management of a business. These changes must be understood and considered in definition of the strategy of the business. Implementation of the strategy must assure commitment from all departments within a company, and this commitment sometimes involves compromises to assure that a department's goals mesh with the overall business objective such compromises must be externally motivated. i.e. for benefit of the customer. Complete implementation transcends internal departments to all aspects of managing the efforts in the marketplace.

The location of seismic events in mines is traditionally calculated based on the arrival times of P- and S-waves for a given velocity model (homogeneous or heterogeneous). This technique is successful when the sources of seismic events are sudden and localised (eg episodes of fracturing in solid rock or dynamic slip along a plane of weakness) and thus the radiated seismic waves have clear arrivals. In massive mining operations such as block caves, strong seismic signals often originate from the movement of loose rocks on the perimeter of the fracture zone. These signals are easily recordable but do not contain easily identifiable direct P- and S-waves, making the estimation of location through traditional methods more complicated. This problem has been approached by using a ‘brightness’ location method that estimates the origin of seismic waves based on travel times of envelopes of seismic energy. This tool is extended to be applicable in a heterogeneous velocity environment that now accounts for the presence of a cave or other strong velocity perturbations. The suggested method is particularly important when caving occurs in low-stress environments (eg close to the surface).CITATION:Meyer, S and de Wit, T, 2016. In August 2018, the first full-scale HydroFloatTM cells for the recovery of coarse composited copper and gold were commissioned at Newcrest’s Cadia Valley operation in New South Wales, Australia. The primary objective of the installation is to recover coarse value-bearing composites that are lost to conventional flotation tailings, without the need for additional power input for particle size reduction to improve mineral liberation. This paper examines the application of Eriez HydroFloatTM technology for the recovery of coarse, poorly liberated copper sulphide particles drawing on recent experience from lab scale testwork through circuit design and commissioning of the full-scale installation at Cadia Valley. INTRODUCTION In the face of declining copper head grades and a tightening regulatory environment around the use of wet tailings dams, the processing of copper ores at coarser particle sizes has become a focal point for the industry. Sulphide flotation using the Eriez HydroFloatTM is one of the emergent technologies that sits under this umbrella of coarse pre-concentration. It has been demonstrated through numerous lab and pilot scale testwork programs carried out by Newcrest and others (Awatey, Kohmuench, Thanasekaran, Skinner & Zanin, 2013), to improve the flotation recovery of sulphide-rock composite particles with low surface liberation, relative to conventional flotation technology. The HydroFloatTM technology has been used widely for the recovery of coarse potash, phosphate, coal, vermiculite, spodumene and diamonds but has never been applied at full scale in either gold or sulphide flotation. In August 2018, the first full-scale 3.4 m diameter HydroFloatTM cells for the recovery of coarse composite copper and gold were commissioned at Newcrest’s Cadia Valley operation in New South Wales. The primary objective of the installation is to recover coarse value-bearing composite particles that are lost to conventional flotation tailings, without the need for additional upfront power input for particle size reduction to improve mineral liberation.

Over the period 2000 to 2003, roof falls have accounted for 4 to 14% of the fatalities in underground mining operations. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is conducting research to reduce the frequency, exposure, and risk of these events through an ongoing program of field and laboratory studies. One area of research involves the evaluation of polyurethane grouting technology that is commonly used to stabilize fractured mine roof strata. Concurrently, NIOSH is conducting work to evaluate the application of ground penetrating radar for advanced delineation of problematic mining areas. In this study, NIOSH partnered with Sub-Technical, Inc. who injected a polyurethane grout (also known as glue) into a roof area of NIOSH’s Safety Research Coal Mine. The mine roof area was scanned using ground penetrating radar technology before and after grout injection in an attempt to determine the extent of grout infiltration. A comparison of the pre-and post-grouting radar records showed a significant change at a mine roof depth of about four to five feet. The interpreted radar records were then compared with drill core information, borescope evaluation of roof-bolt holes in the study area, and underground observations. At this site, the interpretations of the radar records correlated with data obtained from the core holes, borescope evaluations and underground observations. This study showed that ground penetrating radar technology can be a useful tool for detecting changes in mine roof due to the injection of the grout.

"Higher production demands across all bulk handling segments require increased efficiency at the lowest cost of operation, in the safest and most effective manner possible. As conveyor systems become wider, faster and longer, more energy output and more controlled throughput will be needed. Add an increasingly stringent regulatory environment and cost-conscious plant managers must closely review which new equipment and design options align with their long-term goals for the best return on investment (ROI).There are primarily two separate market segments using conveyor belts. One is in process industries such as food, chemicals, paper and powders. Handled in relatively low volumes, the bulk materials that enter these processes are generally of a consistent size and quality. The other market includes mining, coal handling and cement, where the bulk material’s quality and size vary, and the volumes are typically much greater. While both segments face similar issues with safety and environmental control, the properties of the materials handled and the volumes transferred suggest different approaches, with one thing in common: increased belt speeds requiring modern equipment upgrades.Safety at higher belt speedsWith companies recognizing that safety does indeed pay, safety is likely to become a new source of cost reduction. The percentage of mines and processing facilities with a robust safety culture are likely to increase over the next 30 years to the point where it is the norm, not the exception. In most cases, with only a marginal adjustment to the belt speed, operators quickly discover unanticipated problems in existing equipment and workplace safety. These problems are commonly indicated by the larger volume of spillage, increased dust emissions, belt misalignment and more frequent equipment wear or failures."

"An attempt to review the recent literature on comminution reveals at once that the subject has many ramifications and that the applications are so diverse that there are very few general statements which can be made.It. seems reasonable to start classification on the basis of size of material as Input to the comminution process. However, we find that this can only be done in a very imprecise manner.The initial step of breaking rock from its natural state of very large pieces in geological formations into sizes suitable for processing is accomplished by blasting. This step in the process has not been ex-amined in this project except to note that great changes have been made during the last decade or so in the explosives used, and in the method of handling them. We should determine what effect changes in mining methods can have on the need for crushing.The second step in the process is usually primary crushing, performed by gyratory or jaw crushers. The largest chunk which can be fed to a jaw crusher depends on the size of the machine, and should be larger than the largest fragment produced in the miring process. It is obvious that the larger the crusher, the less care required in mining to en¬sure the absence of rocks too large to be crushed. The optimum size of crusher to minimize overall cost of mining and reduction is not at all obvious, and no information on this point has come to light in this investigation.It is rather generally accepted that size reduction is most efficiently done in small stages, and that different machines have different opti¬mum size ranges of feed. For example, crushers are preferred for sizes above about 1"", rod mills for the range between 1"" and 0.1"", ball mills are preferred from 0.1""down to perhaps 10 microns, and vibratory mills, or jet mills, below 10 microns."

A theoretical model based on DFN models and 2D DEM numerical modelling has been developed for evaluating the rock mass mechanical properties. The description of the methodology is non-site related and can be applied in any site for this type of characterisation. The methodology was developed in the frame of the Site Investigation programmes for a Deep Repository for spent fuel in Sweden, and validated on sets of data coming from the Äspö Hard Rock Laboratory. Un modèle théorique base sur des modèles probabilistiques de réseaux de fractures et sur un modèle numérique DEM 2D a été développé dans le but de déterminer les propriétés mécaniques de la masse rocheuse. La méthodologie développée peut être appliquée à tout type de site pour ce genre de caractérisation. Le modèle a été élaboré dans le cadre des programmes de recherche d’un site d’enfouissement des déchets nucléaires en Suède, et validé par une application au laboratoire de recherche souterrain à Äspö. No completely reliable method for characterising and quantifying airborne dust risk exists. A new monitoring technology has been developed whereby dust collected from four-way directional and high volume samplers is analysed for mineral content and particle size for integrated dust mapping. A dust database was set up for the area surrounding the Ffos Las open cast coal site in South Wales. It included XRD directional traces from 17 gauges over 20 months, XRD traces from window ledges in the nearby communities, the major soil types in the area, dust data from haulage roads and public roads and reference-type mineral samples. The database can be accessed relationally to compare and analyse the data using mineral, direction, time, weather and geographical relationships. The data has been used to assess areas of low, intermediate and high levels of risk from dust fall-out

INTRODUCTION Countries that are currently developing their mineral potential have unique information systems requirements to support these activities. The mining laws usually grant the State considerable authority over the process. In many instances, the mining laws give a government agency the responsibility for granting and controlling exploration permits and development concessions. This is the case in Costa Rica. The Direcion of Geologia, Minas, y Hidrocarburos (DGMH) of the Ministerio de Industria, Energia y Minas (MIEM) is responsible for the management and operation of the National Mining Register. This paper describes the results of two studies of the information system requirements to support the National Mining Registry as well as those supporting some of the other function of the DGMH. The first of the studies reviewed the situation before the installation of computer equipment. The second study evaluated the installed systems. BACKGROUND Historical Perspective Mining in Costa Rica is at present a relatively minor part of the economy. It consists primarily of industrial minerals and gold production. Gold production is largely by small-scale miners and may be more substantial than reported. There is considerable interest on the part of the Government in both having a better understanding of the existing mining industry and promoting future development. Mining law was first provided by the Ordinanza de Mineral (of 1830). This was replaced by the first Mining Code of 1953. Apparently, one of the first problems caused by the 1953 law was the granting of concessions which were not worked. A 1968 agreement with ALCOA also resulted in political conflict. The Government worked on a new Mining Code for many years and in 1982 the current Mining Code was enacted. Draft implementing regulations were prepared in April 1984. Mining Code of 1982 The Mining Code of 1982 addresses most aspects of mining in Costa Rica including the declaration that all mineral resources are to be the property of the State. The State may grant exploration permits and exploitation permits. The exploitation of hydrocarbons, radioactive minerals and certain water resources was reserved to the state. The DGMH was given authority to settle placer claim disputes, maintain a registry of exploration permits, and exploitation concessions. and generally supervise mining activity. Towards this, the Mining Code of 1982 includes rather detailed requirements for the processing of application for permits and concessions. Mining Code Application Requirements The following briefly describes the requirements to give the reader a feeling for the complexity of the process. Currently, over 1,000 active applications, exploration permits and exploitation concessions are being monitored under the process. The number remains relatively consistent in that the number of new applications is usually about the same as the applications that are put aside. The time and date of the filing must be certified by the DGMH. The application must include all the information specified in the Mining Code. If incomplete, DGMH must notify the applicant of the deficiencies or omissions and direct that the applicant correct the deficiencies or omissions within 8 business days (a single 30 business-day extension is allowable). If the applicant does not respond as directed, the application is deemed as not having been filed and the pertinent information is placed in the files. The DGMH must reject the application outright and direct it be placed in the files in the following cases: (a). If the new application covers the area of a previous permit or concession, either being processed or already granted.

Different variations of soil nailing techniques have been used in the United States since the late 1970's. Such techniques owe their origins to French developments, which began in the early 1970's as a spin-off from European tunneling excavation support practice. The growing demands of urban infrastructure development and rehabilitation and environmental protection have created an active and expanding soil nailing market demand for earth retention and slope stabilization in the United States since its early developmental years. There is a clear need for a fundamental review of the large number of soil nailing techniques that are currently being used in the United States. Following a brief summary tracing the historical development of soil nailing and a generic classification of applications, this paper provides a review of the different recent advances in the design and construction of soil nailed systems. Discussion topics include nail design advances, permanent "top-down", structure support/underpinning, alternative face stability measures, composite systems, hollow bar and fiberglass nails and architectural reinforced concrete/shotcrete facings. Case histories will be presented to illustrate each of these advances.

"SUMMARYMagnetic and gravimetric surveys wore conducted over an area of ap¬proximately 1,400 square miles in the bauxite district of central Arkansas. The primary purpose of these surveys was to discover any possible buried and hitherto unknown syenite masses favorable for the occurrence of bauxite and to determine the approximate position of the buried flanks of the known syenite masses which might offer conditions favorable for the discovery of new ore bodies.Those surveys indicated that the various syenite outcrops were domes or bosses on a large batholith and that ether similar domes occurred on the batholith but did net outcrop.Drilling on the local geophysical anomalies proved the presence of 10 buried domes, but only 2 of them were found to project above the upper surface of the Midway clays, a requisite of conditions favorable for the occurrence of bauxite ore bodies. The geophysical data indicated the approximate configuration of the buried flanks of the known syenite coutcrops, and the portions of these flanks that project above the Midway have now been outlined more accurately by drilling.The geophysical surveys have produced evidence permitting the elimi¬nation of a large area as unfavorable for the occurrence of bauxite.Magnetic surveys extending along the Midway-Wilcox contact from Gurdon, in Clark County, on the southwest to Searcy, in White County, on the northwest have proved the improbability of the existence of other syenite masses similar to those found in Pulaski and Saline Counties. A detailed magnetic survey of the Magnet Cove area in Hot Spring County has proved that the syenite mass exposed in that locality is an isolated intrusion and entirely unrelated to those of Pulaski and Saline Counties. This syenite mass does not occur under conditions believed to be favorable for the occurrence of bauxite."

Mine workers in heavy and dangerous work are under several physical risk factors, for example temperature, humidity, noise, vibration, lighting and air velocity. Thermal comfort includes parameters such as air temperature, air humidity, air flow rate, radiant heat, metabolic rate and garment insulation. In this study, thermal comfort conditions were evaluated using thermal comfort indices defined as predicted mean vote (PMV) and predicted percentage dissatisfied (PPD) which were determined by measurements taken from an underground coal mine for approximately 100 days. Although the metabolic rate (light work) was kept at 2 met, it was found that predicted mean vote ranged between − 2.58 and 1.68. The predicted percentage dissatisfied index was found to reach 95%. According to the results, it can be seen that thermal comfort may have negative effects on occupational health and safety. The change in thermal comfort index values in the Soma Underground Coal Mine was investigated in detail and the reasons for the changes were determined. Furthermore, determining the optimal working environment for the mine workers was also an aim of this study.

There are no large rivers in Western Australia capable of supplying water for processing magnetite ores. If sea water is used there are severe corrosion issues and the requirement to wash the concentrates with potable water. If groundwater is used there is a need to treat the water and sustainability is an issue for large projects because of potential drawdown of the aquifer.If sea water is desalinated the cost of the water is high because of the power requirement. At the same time the necessity to conserve water has lead to flow sheets where all of the tailings have to be filtered to minimise the water requirement.Managing the various water qualities and optimising water recovery and quality has resulted in optimising the water balance and issues meeting environmental obligations. Reverse flotation is a critical final step in reducing the silica level in the final concentrate and requires good quality water.

Epithermal deposits (Au or Ag dominant, ± base metals) form within ~1 km of the surface in volcanic belts, both arcs and rifts, with the different tectonic settings reflected in distinctly different characteristics. Within arcs, deposits are typically intrusion centred and commonly associated with hypogene advanced argillic alteration, both in lithocaps and as halos to shallow or proximal portions of some veins; such alteration is coupled with processes that form porphyry Cu-Au deposits at depths of ~1–3 km. Introduction of metals is related to the subsequent phyllic-stage overprint; if this fluid rises to the level of the lithocap or into epithermal veins, Au mineralisation with Cu or Ag may occur, associated with sulfate minerals or muscovite. By contrast, Au-rich (both low Ag:Au ratio and bonanza grade) colloform quartz veins form at shallow depths in volcanic rifts, typically within a few hundred metres of the surface, with clay halos and topped by silica sinter if the palaeosurface is preserved. The geologic variability in volcanic belts, including host rocks, structures and hydraulic gradients, means that many epithermal deposits vary from the end-member features of the principal styles. Effective exploration requires familiarity with end-member styles as well as potential variations, plus the mineralogical indicators of palaeotemperature (eg evidence for erosion depth, fluid flow channels).
