Portland cement is the chief binding ingredient in mine backfill. In the presence of water, the chemical compounds within portland cement hydrate causing hardening and strength gain. During hydration, heat is generated. In certain cases, hydration heat may be produced significantly faster than it can be dissipated, which can create high temperatures in the underground environment. This paper presents the results of a series of investigations aimed at quantifying the heat generated by cemented backfill during hydration. Scaled stope models, instrumented with thermistors, were used in the investigation. Heat transfer to the hanging wall, orebody, footwall and cross-cut and production drifts was assessed during the backfill curing process and relationships between cement content, cure time, and heat generation were developed. The results of this work will assist mine operators in predicting the heat generated by cemented backfill and provide the necessary information to implement effective engineering control of heat in the underground environment.

Battle Mountain Gold Company's Paj ingo Mine is the first gold mine developed by the Company in Australia. The Mine located in northern Queensland commenced operations in September 1987. The high grade epithermal orebody is selectively mined and processed through a conventional carbon in leach/carbon in pulp (CIL/CIP) plant at a rate of 200000 tonnes per annum. In 1988 it produced 61000 oz gold and 152000 oz silver. Inadequate preoperational development of non technical management and organisational functions often leads to inefficiencies that last well into the operation. The Pajingo experience in this regard is oaTple ented by those from a number of other recently commissioned small operations. A checklist is discussed to assist any future preoperational group in focussing their attention into areas that seem to be of secondary importance at the time but often have a significant impact on overall management efficiency later.

Potentially acid forming (PAF) waste rock contained in dumps formed as a result of open cut mining of metalliferous orebodies are conventionally sealed or covered using a near-saturated, low permeability compacted clay layer, protected with a mulch layer and/or vegetated growth medium. The purpose of the compacted clay layer is to limit oxygen diffusion and the infiltration of rainfall into the dump. Where the aerial extent of the PAF waste rock dump is large, or where suitable clayey material is in short supply, it may be difficult to source sufficient suitable clayey material to form the cover. The paper describes a laboratory-based investigation of combining inert waste rock and tailings to form an alternative seal or cover material. The inert waste rock was sourced from the trafficked surface of a non-acid forming (NAF) waste rock dump, with a maximum particle size of about 100 mm. This was combined with NAF thickener underflow tailings slurry in various mass ratios, and the resulting mixtures tested for their particle size distribution, compaction characteristics, soil water characteristics (relationship between suction and volumetric moisture content), and saturated hydraulic conductivity. The mixtures tested ranged in consistency from those dry enough to be compactable, to those with the consistency of wet concrete that lend themselves to placement without the need for compaction. The laboratory test results showed that the suitability of the mixtures as seal or cover materials is very dependent on the particle size distribution of the mixture, with well-graded mixtures having substantial fines performing best.

The purposes of defining the mining environment for underground mass mining and the uses of characterisation data are outlined. The requirements for data in the areas of geology, surface and groundwater hydrology, topography and environmental constraints and geotechnical studies are identified. Emphasis is then placed on the collection and interpretation of geotechnical data for establishing the in situ stress regime and for rock mass characterisation. Methods used for diamond drilling, core logging, borehole logging, data analysis and presentation, rock mass modelling and rock mass classification are outlined. Finally, recent and potential advances in the state-of-the-art are identified in areas such as geophysical methods, measurement while drilling, computerised data collection and analysis, rock mass modelling, in situ stress measurement data presentation and interpretation, and some applications of rock mass characterisation data.

Limitations of current touch-up solders for galvanised steel include coating thickness control problems and poor corrosion and abrasion resistance as well as health and environmental concerns due to toxic constituents such as lead. This paper reports on progress in ILZRO-sponsored research to develop an improved touch-up solder. Encouraging results were achieved in torch soldering trials with experimental zinc-tin-based alloys. Mouldability and coating thickness control were achieved over a practical working temperature range in which the solders consisted of a viscous mixture of solid primary zinc phase particles in a liquid zinc-tin eutectic matrix. The mouldability was dependent on the microstructure of the solder sticks, and optimum structures could be obtained through control of casting solidification rates and by the addition of small amounts of copper. Hardness, abrasion resistance, adhesion and corrosion tests on experimental Zn- (40 - 50 per cent) Sn-I per cent Cu also showed improved performance over lead-tin-zinc solders and compared the effects of tin content within this range. Atmospheric corrosion testing and optimisation of alloy composition and methods of solder stick production are continuing.

The 14.7 km Mt. MacDonald Tunnel beneath Rogers Pass in Canada used both drill-and-blast and machine boring methods. A unique ventilation system provides for diesel operations. The design featured minimum construction support and an unrei.nforced poured concrete lining. The west heading was excavated in a single-stage drill-and-blast operation. The east heading used a TBM top heading with a drill-and-blast keyhole bench. The choice of methods was controlled by varying geology, with up to 1,700 m rock cover. Construction performance and progress are evaluated.

SIROSMELT is a successful new pyrometallurgi- cal furnace system using a top-entry lance which can be submerged in both slag and matte. The lance is of simple construction, and is cooled by process air. Pilot plant work commenced in the CSIRO Division of Chemical Engineering in 1972 using a 50 kg batch reactor. This paper traces the development of the technology through various slag cleaning and smelting processes up to a scale of 5 tonnes per hour continuous feed. Strong co- operation between CSIRO and the Australian smelting industry has contributed greatly to the success of SIROSMELT.

Increasing the upper particle size limit of flotation would allow operators to increase mill throughput, save operating costs, simplify flow sheets, and increase rate of return. However, coarse particle flotation is difficult for various reasons, of which bubble-particle detachment has been identified as the major limiting factor. In the present work, the process of bubble-particle detachment has been studied by directly measuring the forces required to detach air bubbles from hydrophobic solids. The measurements were conducted using a hanging balance apparatus. The measured forces were converted to detachment energies that can be compared with the work of adhesion, which in turn is a function of hydrophobicity, surface tension and contact area. The results were converted to detachment energies using the Young-Laplace equation for capillarity. In the present work, the solid surfaces were hydrophobised by coating them with octadecyltrichlorosilane and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide. The results show that bubble-particle detachment occurs in two steps. In the first step, air bubbles are deformed, while the three-phase contact (TPC) line is pinned, until contact angle reaches advancing angle. In the second step, the TPC line moves along the surface until solid/air interface is replaced by solid-liquid interface. In general, the energies of detachment measured in the second step are in good agreement with calculated work of adhesion. Thus, the energy required during the first step effectively represents an energy barrier for bubble-particle detachment. It has been found that the energy barrier varies with surface roughness and surface tension. The results of the present investigation suggest, therefore, that coarse particle flotation can be improved by control of particle hydrophobicity, surface roughness, and surface tension.

Traditionally, surface coal mines in the Western United States have been limited by economics to depths between 150 to 200 feet. Utah International Inc., however, is now planning to strip coal its San Juan Mine in Northwestern New Mexico to depths ranging up to 400 feet while uncovering 20 feet of steam coal. This method is cost-competitive with nearby shallower coal deposits and underground mining of the same property. How trucks and shovels can pre-strip for a dragline, along with results of the planning process, comparison with alternate systems, capital requirements, operating costs and comparisons with other coal sources are all detailed. Also discussed are the major problems anticipated, how they might be corrected, and potential improvements to the concept. Introduction The San Juan Deep Stripping Project will be situated at Utah International's San Jean Mine. The mine is in the Four Corners region, so-called because four states enjoy a common border point about 30 miles to the northwest.(see Figure 1). Treatment methods for a low grade deposit at Mt. Fitch near Rum Jungle, N.T., were investigated. Physical beneficiation of the ore, sulphuric acid leaching, carbonate leaching and various methods of uranium extraction from the leach liquor were studied. Although the deposit occurs in a carbonate environment, acid leaching of the ore after beneficiation by radiometric sorting appears to be the most economic treatment method. Uranium would be recovered from the leach liquor by solvent extraction.

Solid Energy New Zealand (SENZ) uses a 20+ year period for integrated planning of all its business activities. It has an ongoing program of coal resource assessment to optimise future mines within this 20 year period, using a six step resource and mine planning process. Desktop review and conceptual study at preliminary Levels 1 and 2 are based on general coal resource information. Further coal resource investigations are carried out for the more detailed evaluations in secondary assessment, prefeasibility study, feasibility study and detailed engineering from Levels 3 to 6. At Levels 1 and 2, completing conceptual planning, including preliminary resource evaluation and economic appraisal to the target cost uncertainty level of ¦33 per cent, is challenging in New ZealandÆs highly variable geological and geographical conditions. Where coal deposit geometries are relatively simple, approximate methods for determining pit limits using overburden strip ratios, seam thickness, physical boundaries, and quality cut-offs may be sufficient. Many New Zealand coalfields are however complicated structurally, with multiple seams and extensive folding and faulting. Coal seams are characterised by variable dip, thickness, and quality over relatively short distances. In the North IslandÆs Waikato coalfields, coal is typically overlain by weak sediments and clay rich strata that necessitate very flat cut and fill slope angles. The proximity of these deposits to major infrastructure (including towns, highways and rail lines), significant environmental features such as the Waikato river and lakes, and valuable dairy farmland, add further complexity. Traditional preliminary mine planning techniques applied in these conditions are insufficient. Pit optimisation software, widely used in the metalliferous mining industry since the 1980s, offers the ability to analyse many more specific factors affecting pit limits, mine layouts, and economics, with more rigour and for a much larger number of scenarios, than traditional methods allow. SENZ therefore decided to adapt and use æWhittleÆ pit optimisation software for Level 2 analysis of several Waikato opencast prospects. This paper describes this work.

Intrusion related ore deposits are widespread in the Central Peruvian Cordillera Occidental and adjacent high-plains to the east and include porphyry Cu (-Au, Mo; eg Morococha), Cu-Zn (Pb-) skarn (eg Antamina), Pb-Zn-Ag carbonate hosted vein deposits (eg Uchucchacua), cordilleran base metal (eg Cerro de Pasco) and epithermal deposits (eg Quicay). Geochronology and petrochemistry of intrusive rocks associated with mineralisation reveals that: most ore deposits were emplaced in the late middle to early late Miocene; and are related to calc-alkaline granodioritic igneous rocks with Sm/Yb >3, Sr/Y >40 and Y/Th <1.5. The largest deposits, including Antamina, Colquijirca and Cerro de Pasco are associated with intrusions with Sm/Yb >4 and which, as indicated by Pb and Sr isotopic data, have undergone relatively moderate middle and upper crustal assimilation. The chemical signature of igneous rocks related to mineralisation likely reflects melt equilibration in the lower crust at a crustal thickness of more than 45 km. Mineralisation was favoured by a change from normal to flat subduction, resulting in increased compression, crustal thickening and subsequent cessation of the magmatic arc. Premiocene ore deposits do occur, but are restricted to a broad E-W corridor between Uchucchacua and Milpo and probably were controlled by a crustal-scale structural discontinuity across the strike of theAndes. Not all igneous rocks with high Sm/Yb and Sr/Y ratios did acquire their trace element signature in the lower crust. Petrographic and Pb isotopic evidence indicates shallow crustal hornblende fractionation or assimilation of pelitic material as possible causes for high trace element ratios in some rocks. These are apparently unrelated to polymetallic mineralisation. Thus, critical evaluation of petrographic and geochemical data in metallogenetic studies, especially in areas with complex basement architecture such as Central Peru is critical and should not be reduced to simple trace element ratios. When, in 1985, Marty McFly is accidentally sent back to 1955 in a DeLorean ‘time machine’ in Back to the Future, he encounters young versions of his parents, and must make sure they fall in love or he will cease to exist. This Conference celebrates 40 years since the inaugural Mill Operators’ Conference in Mt Isa in 1978; over this period, great technological advances have been made in almost all aspects of mill operation, resulting in considerable improvements in grades and recoveries from ever-more complex ores. However, in 2018, the mining industry is facing challenges that might have been difficult to predict in 1978 (or were they?). The computer revolution, the information revolution, and the bio-technology revolution have all contributed to the increase in operating efficiencies, but, combined with the social revolution, they also call into question the existence of the mining industry as we know it. This presentation looks back at the ‘way things were’ in the 1970s, and at what was then considered to be the ‘basics,’ and attempts to sketch what the mining industry might be like in 2058. As Back to the Future Part II demonstrates so vividly, it is much easier to review the past than predict the future. It is difficult to know what form the mining industry will have in 40 years’ time. Nevertheless, as this presentation will argue, it is important to take action now, to ensure that it (like Marty McFly) does not cease to exist. Some courses of action are proposed, including going back to the basics of a very different past.*This is an abstract only. Records of ex-solution intergrowths with tetrahedrite as a component are rare. Intergrowths of this nature of tetrahedrite with galena have been described by Guild (1917) and Schneiderhohn (1922), and in Broken Hill ore by Stillwell (1926), but both Schneiderhohn (1922) and Gruner (1929) have commented specifically on the apparent absence of exsolution intergrowths of tetrahedrite and chalcopyrite, despite their frequent association in ores, and their related atomic structures. Schwartz (1942), reviewing the literaturerelating to ex-solution among ore minerals, lists only two instances of such intergrowths, one an occurrence of lamellae of chalcopyrite oriented along the octahedral planes of tentantite (the arsenical isomorph of tetrahedrite), the other of blebs of tetrahedrite in stannite. The only other possible instance of such intergrowths known to the author is the record of "pseudoeutectic" intergrowths of tetrahedrite with chalcopyrite and with bornite in a silver pitchblende ore from the Great Bear Lake district of Canada (Furnival,1939).Some interest attaches, therefore, to the two occurrences described below of tetrahedrite showing ex-solution relationship, in one instance with chalcopyrite, and in the other with bornite.TETRAHEDRITE-CHALCOPYRITEAn intimate intergrowth of tetrahedrite and chalcopy-rite, apparently the product of unmixing of a solid solution of...

The Hellyer concentrator of Aberfoyle Limited commenced production in 1989 processing a fine grained, massive sulphide ore containing Zn, Pb, Ag, Cu and Au as values. Four concentrates are produced - copper/silver, lead, zinc and bulk (Pb/Zn) - with overall payable recoveries (1991) of 80 per cent Zn, 55 per cent Pb, 50 per cent Ag, 30 per cent Cu and ten per cent Au. Metallurgical development work commenced immediately after plant commissioning, and continues. The flotation response and liberation analysis on a size basis highlighted reagent balance problems associated with tower mill regrinding of sphalerite, poor conditioning of flotation pulps, poor selectivity for fine galena, and insufficient liberation. These were the main causes of values lost to tailings, values reporting to the 'wrong' concentrates and of impurities in the concentrates. Modifications to tower mill regrind circuit operation, and the use of improved conditioning techniques have greatly improved concentrator performance, particularly in the finer (-5 micron) size fractions. Studies of concentrator and laboratory flotation by size and liberation analysis are the basis of diagnostic metallurgy. The techniques used to evaluate the improved concentrator performance are discussed.

The techniques originally developed to process digital images of Mars, later gained widespread acceptance when applied to Landsat data: they are now making a significant impact in fields of geology outside remote sensing. The three ingredients of success are seen to be firstly, the perceptual attributes of image displays and the use of colour; secondly, the absolute ability to register data from a variety of sources; and thirdly, the speed of specialist "interactive" digital image display systems. The future lies in further exploiting these attributes through a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) approach to data handling, integration and display.

In order to provide a'valid description of the performance of size classifying equipment it is necessary that a standard procedure be established for testing and for the subsequent expression of results. Such a standard would permit the valid comparison of alternative equipment and may provide a basis for the prediction of performance. An Australian Standard (AS 1634-1974) has been used as the starting point for an International Standards Organisation-(ISO) working group (of which the authors are members) charged with the preparation of an ISO Standard for the expression and presentation of the results of tests on coal size classifying equipment. The approach taken is applicable to all types of sizing equipment (cyclones, screens, dedusters, etc.) and should be suitable for adoption in the minerals industry as well as by coal preparation engineers. The background to the proposed Standard, is given,including a critical review of other frequently quoted performance measures, the procedures described in the draft are discussed, and an example given.
