"A key barrier to vertical mineshaft construction is the construction access required for workers. A suspended work stage is used to provide this access for the mechanical, electrical and structural applications and other tasks. Work stage design is complicated considering the numerous types of construction activities that are executed simultaneously, the confined environment in which the work stage operates, the significant corrosion attack that is present, the weight limitations imposed by the mechanical hoist systems, and the risks associated with worker safety. Also complicating the design, these structures and their construction environment can vary with time. Hence, they can be described as 4D structures. The author has discovered significant synergies and advantages with integrating engineering design with detailed three-dimensional (3D) fabrication design. The significant reduction of minor design errors needing field correction will be underscored. The tender process is also accelerated since the design output is fabrication shop drawings including a detailed quantity takeoff output which lists each component required and its specific quantity. The paper presented will document the numerous advantages to the project using this approach. La mine Tio (QIT Fer et Titane Inc.) exploite à ciel ouvert un gisement d?ilménite massive depuis 1950, générant jusqu?à maintenant plus de 70 Mt de roches stériles potentiellement génératrices de drainage neutre contaminé (DNC), dont une partie est submergée dans le lac Petitpas, au nord de la mine. Si généralement l?ennoiement des rejets miniers a un effet bénéfique pour limiter la contamination des eaux, cela reste à prouver pour ce qui est des stériles générateurs de DNC. Des essais en réservoirs ont été réalisés afin d?évaluer la réactivité de trois différents types de stériles submergés, qui ont été choisis en fonction de leur teneur en ilménite. Afin d?évaluer l?impact de la matière organique sur la réactivité des stériles submergés, chaque type de stérile est étudié en immersion simple ainsi que combinée à des sédiments prélevés au lac Allard, à proximité de la mine, d?où l?eau utilisée dans les essais a aussi été prélevée. L?évolution des teneurs en Ca, Mg, Si et Ni durant les 8 premiers mois d?étude démontrent que les stériles immergés sont réactifs, mais l?impact de la matière organique demeure pour l?instant difficile à préciser. Tank tests on Tio mine waste rock The Tio mine (QIT Iron and Titanium Inc.) exploits a massive ilmenite ore as an open pit since 1950, producing over 70Mt of potentially contaminated neutral drainage (CND)-generating waste rocks. While the underwater disposal of mine wastes generally show a beneficial effect on water contamination, this method still needs to be approved for CND-generating waste rocks. Tank tests were realized in order to evaluate the reactivity in underwater conditions of 3 different waste rock types, chosen with regards to their ilmenite content. In order to evaluate the impact of organic matter on the reactivity of underwater waste rock, each waste rock type was studied in simple immersion and in combination with sediments sampled at Allard lake, located near the mine, where the water for the tests was also sampled. The evolution of Ca, Mg, Si and Ni during the 8 first months of testing show that the waste rocks are reactive underwater, but the impact of the organic matter is till hard to define.

In 2009 Newmont Mining Corporation’s annual global spend on grinding media reached $94M USD, having doubled in the five years since 2004. The major contributing factor to the spend escalation during this period was unit consumable price, with total media consumption also rising as a function of annual ore tonnes milled. In an effort to better understand and manage the growth of this expenditure a significant supply chain management program was implemented. This was complemented by a series of technical initiatives focussed on grinding media specifications, quality management and the prediction of grinding media wear rate as a function of physical ore characteristics. This paper discusses the methodology and outcomes of these activities.

"Previous papers (McNulty 1998 and 2004) have dealt with the causes of successful and less successful achievement of design production rate by new processing plants in the minerals industry. Examination of many case histories has allowed the construction of curves or profiles that represent projects with similar characteristics that equate to differing degrees of care exercised during the project development phase. Simplistically, decreasing care is reflected by increasing risk and a heightened likelihood of poor technical and/or financial performance.This contribution provides an update, including recent case histories, and presents a modified Series 1A curve that includes the best 23 case histories, out of a total of 81 examined, or 28%. This is done to show that some very carefully developed and executed projects can ramp-up quickly and that owners of new projects should avoid being too pessimistic in projecting early cash flow if they are certain that they have done their homework. The role of metallurgical process development in the reduction of project risk is discussed and several financial analyses are presented that express the potential monetary value of a well-designed and professionally executed metallurgical program."

"After six years of successful excavation with a support pattern, some roof failures have happened in a room-and-pillar underground mine excavated in a stratified rock mass. In this paper the authors give explanation to the failure mechanisms and redesign the support in order to solve the recent problems of roof collapse.The mine magnesite bed is approximately 14 m thick, and runs in the E-W direction with an average dip of 18º. Due to mine constraints and the inexpensiveness of the ore, the excavation is performed in the mineral itself, avoiding the need for mining dumps and waste excavation. Rooms and drifts are oriented in the mineral bed to form an angle of 19º to the direction of the strata, reducing the roadway gradients to less than 10%. Rooms are 11 m wide and pillars are 7 m wide. They are designed to leave a 1 meter thick magnesite bed in the roof of the rooms to act as a supporting beam. More often than not there is a layer of very poor quality marly shale up to 1 m thick resting on this magnesite beam. Overlying the poor quality marly shale there is a better quality, self-supporting sandy shale.First, a characterization of the involved rock masses (magnesite, marly shale and sandy shale) is performed, collecting the geotechnical data from previous studies and performing new in situ geotechnical surveys to check the soundness of the previous data. A distinction is made between different quality zones inside the mine by means of the RMR classification, associated to the occurrence of faults.Back-analysis of some of the failed rooms and data from exploration boreholes were used to determine the failure mechanisms (associated to Voussoir type failure or occurrence of sub-horizontal joints crossing the magnesite beam). Based on an understanding of these mechanisms, the method used to design the support and to analyse the stability of the different possible thicknesses of the magnesite beams of the rooms and drifts of the mine were improved.Numerical models of the most relevant conditions found in the mine were performed in order to better understand the behaviour of the roofs and to simulate the supporting solution obtained in the previous analyses.The most relevant conclusions with regard to the main elements causing the instability of the roof include the appearance of sub-horizontal discontinuities crossing the magnesite bed, which causes total instability of the roof and usually leads to collapse; excessive thinness of the magnesite beam in the problematic rooms; and the relaxation of the deepest (around 270 m in depth) zone of the mine because of existing faults."

Great Bear lake, the fourth largest body of water on this continent, comprises an area of approximately 12,000 square miles, and is set astride the Arctic circle, with a large portion of it witnessing both the Arctic winter night, and the Arctic summer day with its midnight sun. The very name itself, Great Bear, suggests an Arctic region. The seasonal contrasts at Great Bear lake are very marked by the cold and darkness of winter, and the warmth and brightness of summer. Signs of winter such as low clouds, snow, sleet, fog, and night frosts, generally appear the latter part of August, while ice forming on bays during the last two weeks in September ends boat travel on the lake about September 30th.Early in June the ice leaves the river mouths, during the last ten days of the month it disappears from small bays, and at some time during the last two weeks of July the main body of the lake becomes navigable. In 1916, the ice disappeared earlier than usual, and the lake was navigable on July 5th. Great Bear river generally breaks up about June 1st, but, on account of ice cliffs and floes, it is not navigable with safety until early in July. Even then, the traveller is confronted with the Charles rapids, but these might be overcome by a wagon or motor road, such as the one from Fitzgerald to Fort Smith: However, in 1931, Mr. A. W. Boland, Fort Norman, N.W.T., carried with scow and motorboat practically all freight between Fort Norman and LaBine point and Hunter bay, at the east end of the lake. During July and August, two types of clothing are required, for, although the days are mainly ones of warm sunshine, the nights are cloudy and cold. In the winter season, fur clothing is used exclusively. Considerable timber, mainly white spruce, suitable for fuel and building purposes, borders the lake and extends eastward to the Coppermine river. North of the lake, no timber is found except in the river valleys, but with oil and coal possibilities near Fort Norman, the fuel situation might be solved.

"This paper briefly reviews some of the gravity research done at McGill University and current Canadian operating practices, with emphasis on results of interest for operators. The following topics are addressed: security, economics, predicting recovery, circuit optimization, unit selection and final upgrading. Emphasis is placed on the Knelson Concentrator.The topic of security and economics are addressed jointly, in terms of the place of the gravity circuit in the mill flowsheet. Actual plant experience is drawn upon to identify potential problems and actual solutions.Predicting primary recovery is linked with a characterization of the ore, the choice of a circuit, and the fraction of the bleed used. Factors such as feed preparation, preliminary upgrading, fraction of recycle treated, ability to recover fines and location of the bleed are discussed.Final upgrading is achieved almost only by tabling and smelting. This can lead to fine gold recovery problems when more effective units are used upstream. Alternatives are discussed.IntroductionResearch on gold recovery by gravity over the past eight years has associated McGill University with a number of gold producers. This paper attempts to review the information gathered from a practical perspective. Some of the information was generated in McGill University's labs, some gathered at plant site, and some was shared by operators."

THE INSTABILITY of copper prices and their low levels since late 1974 are of great concern to both producers and, to a lesser degree, consumers of copper. The price levels portrayed by the "neutral long-term" price trend are assumed to have been enough to encourage sufficient investment to provide adequate world production capacity and yet not so high as to encourage development of excessive over capacity. The identification of the present level of this trend has taken on special importance for governments and for corporations active in the world copper industry. One approach to the possible determination of such a price is through the use of moving averages. In this way, the effects of relatively short-term price movements can be dampened, as can those related to business cycles. From such averaged price data, long-term trends can be sought over a selected time period. The choice of the past time period for which a price trend is sought may have a major effect on the result'. For example, in the period 1885-1973, the long-term price trend for copper in constant dollars showed a decline, whereas in the period 1919-1973 it was rising. For the purposes of discussion, an appropriate choice of period might be a relatively short and recent one so that the majority of the present cost factors would be present throughout. It should also be long enough to cover a number of full business cycles.

"In the Little Long Lac-Sturgeon River area of Thunder Bay district, Ontario, most of the known ore deposits occur in fractures, shear zones, and zones of brecciation, in folded sedimentary rocks . In two or three instances, however, deposits occur in Keewatin greenstones and in later granitic rocks of probable Algoman age.The principal regional features in the area are the long narrow bands of Keewatin volcanic rocks and Timiskaming sedimentary formations that extend east from lake Nipigon to Long Lac, a distance of about 65 miles. The belts continue to the east for many miles beyond Long Lac and probably for some distance to the west under the waters of lake Nipigon. They are intruded in places, particularly in the north, by large masses of diorite, granodiorite, and granite. Small intrusive masses of diorite and porphyry also occur in many localities throughout the area.The Little Long Lac-Sturgeon River mining area is the youngest camp in Ontario and has been in production only since 1934.The district is readily accessible from the branch line of the Canadian National railway between Longlac station on the main line and Port Arthur, and from the Trans-Canada highway No. 17. Both these means of communication traverse the area in a general east-west direction parallel with the principal structural trend of the rocks of the region.In the Little Long Lac section discoveries were made by W. W. Smith in 1931 (Hard Rock property) , by T. A. Johnson in 1932 ( Bankfield property) , by T. A. Johnson and T. Oklend in 1932 (Little Long Lac property) , by F. MacLeod and A. Cockshutt in 1933 (MacLeod-Cockshutt property) , and by George and Frank Papineau in 1935 (Hutchison Lake property).In the Sturgeon River section discoveries were made by Powers and Silam in 1925 (Northern Empire property), T. A. Johnson in 1931 (Dik-Dik property) , and by Russell and James Cryderman in 1935 and 1936 (Sand River and Leitch properties)."

"The properties of Base Metal Mining Corporation are in Yoho Park about 2 1/2 miles northeast of Field; British Columbia; on the main line of the Canadian Pacific railway. There are actually two mines; the Monarch on mount Stephen and the Kicking Horse on mount Field; separated by the steep valley of Kicking Horse river. The outcrops of the orebodies range from 4; 900 feet to 5; 300 feet above sea-level. The concentrator is situated below the Monarch mine and is connected to the main portal by an aerial tramway. The ore from the Kicking Horse mine is conveyed by aerial tramway to a storage bin on the main highway and is then trucked to the concentrator.During the construction of the Canadian Pacific railway through Kicking Horse valley, galena float was found at the base of mount Stephen. The East Monarch outcrop was staked in 1894. The outcrop of the West Monarch ore body on the cliff face of mount Stephen was not discovered until 1916. The Kicking Horse orebodies on mount Field were discovered a few years later. In 1912, a 75-ton concentrator was erected, which operated at intervals until 1924. During this period approximately 42,000 tons were mined and milled, largely from the East Monarch orebody. In 1928, the Base Metal Mining Corporation, Limited, was formed to take over the Monarch and Kicking Horse mines. A 300-ton differential flotation concentrator was erected and production started in the autumn of 1929. In a very short time, however, the low price of metals forced the mill to shut down until August 1933. From 1929 to 1935, when the mill again ceased operation, a total of 256,500 dry tons of ore, averaging 1.59 oz. silver per ton, 9.7 per cent lead, and 12.6 per cent zinc, was mined and milled, largely from the West Monarch orebody. After a period of further underground development, the concentrator reopened in 1940 and is still in operation. From 1940 to the end of 1944, 354,363 tons of ore was milled, averaging 5.32 per cent lead and 10.47 per cent zinc."

Process control and optimization have always been crucial aspects in the mineral processing industry, and expectations constantly increase to cope with more stringent security, quality, efficiency, and environmental performances. The main challenges to reduce variability of key process variables, and steer profits to higher values while maintaining sustainability indexes within acceptable ranges come from nonlinear responses and circulating loads. The most commonly implemented control strategies rely on simple PID controllers for practical implementation and maintenance considerations. If arguably good performances are accomplished when these are adequately set up, there is also room for further gains by using more advanced methods such as model-based techniques. There is thus a need for more realistic process and equipment models. Based on advances of the past few decades, this paper introduces an autogenous/semi-autogenous mill (AG/SAG) model to be included in a modular comminution circuit simulation toolbox comprising ball/rod mills, material handling, and classification devices. The proposed mill model incorporates a modified version of the classic comminution equation that makes grinding rates proportional to the energy input. It requires the determination of a selection function (fragmentation rates) and a breaking function (fragments distribution). The former is modelled with an S-shaped curve characteristic of AG/SAG processes and the latter is a size-relative distribution of the produced fragments. The power draw is predicted employing the empirical equation of Austin. The paper also develops a case study to illustrate how the proposed simulation framework can capture the behaviour of an actual plant. Model calibration consists in an optimization problem that search the global minimum of the difference between predicted and measured/estimated size distributions, power draw, solid fractions, etc. Results demonstrate that the mill simulator can mimic an actual process in its operation conditions. INTRODUCTION Comminution is a key stage in the mineral processing industry, obviously because the phases of interest must be liberated to be able to recover them. In general terms, the global performance of a plant depends largely on the efficiency of the grinding circuit and on the material properties such as its grindability, density, and mineral grades. The subject has vastly been studied since as early as the 19th century, when Rittinger (1867) and Kick (1883) developed some of the first empirical models to relate grinding and energy input. The great interest in the subject comes from the fact that this operation is costly and, probably most concerning, highly inefficient. Buckingham et al. (2011) estimated that ore comminution can represent up to 60% of the overall plant power draw. Moreover, only a modest fraction of the power draw effectively translates into rock fragmentation. For grinding, estimates range between 1% and 25%, depending on the reference used, while the rest is mainly lost as heath (Fuerstenau & Abouzeid, 2002; Tromans & Meech, 2002; Bouchard et al., 2017).

"With the Ontario Ministry of the Environment stipulating that the cumulative concentration of copper, lead, zinc and nickel in mine mill effluent must be no greater than 1.0 milligram per litre, it has become necessary for the mining industry of find some form of treatment for the removal of heavy metals from effluent waters.To comply with these guidelines, it became necessary for Mattabi Mines Ltd., which is situated 50 miles Northeast of Ignace in Northwestern Ontario, to develop a compact, cost effective and technically sound treatment process to remove heavy metals from their tailings overflow. A design committee consisting of mine metallurgists, environmental engineers, a Dutch research and development team and the equipment supplier engineering staff was set up to accomplish this.Using some new and innovative wastewater treatment equipment, the guidelines established by the Ontario Ministry of the Environment can now be met. The sludge produced from the precipitated heavy metals is sent directly to the concentrator, thus eliminating the danger of re-dissolution of the metals in a landfill site, while recovering some of the valuable metals that would otherwise be wasted in a sludge landfill."

The Mouska Mine uses primarily shrinkage mining to extract the narrow veins that contain its mineralization. Mining is currently occurring on levels 12 to 14, reaching depths of 800 m below surface. Although the mine is not considered ?deep?, no backfill is available to fill empty stopes and certain areas remain open for over 500 m in height. As only narrow sill pillars remain to separate the levels, a highstress environment is created. Seismic activity was first observed when mining reached Level 11 (600 m deep) and has steadily increased since then. Seismic activity is associated with the highly-stressed sill and rib pillars; no geological structures have demonstrated significant seismic potential to date. In response to this increase in activity, pillar dimensions have been increased with depth and dynamic ground support has been installed. Seismic and pressure monitoring have been implemented, among other types of instrumentation. The following paper further describes the challenges associated with using conventional methods in the high-stress environment typical of the Canadian Shield, as well as several solutions implemented to mitigate these risks.

Fine refuse slurry impoundment is a requirement for the coal industry to dispose the fines. Impoundment maintenance is an on going problem for the coal industry and its breakage creates environmental as well as financial problems. Deep Cone thickener technology which has been successfully applied in the alumina industry to dewater red mud was evaluated for fine refuse slurry. Preliminary obtained in a pilot-plant test showed that properly flocculated conventional thickener underflow slurry could be thickened to about 52.5 wt % solids and could replace belt filter press. The Deep Cone thickener was also found to dewater clean coal slurry to about 70 wt % solids. Further testing of the unit at other coal preparation plant is in progress.

"The Kettle River Operation of Echo Bay Minerals Company is located about thirty kilometers north of the town of Republic in northeastern Washington State. In tum, Republic is about a hundred and seventy kilometers north and a little west of the city of Spokane, Washington. It is also about fifty kilometers south of the town of Grand Forks, BC, Canada. At this time it is the only gold mining and milling operation in the State.Tailings are stored in a double lined, zero discharge facility. It became evident in mid 1996 that the rate of free water accumulation in the tailings pond was going to result in the level in the pond reaching its permitted freeboard elevation long before the solids plus pore water capacity was reached.We then embarked on a mission to manage tailings pond water on several fronts: reduce fresh water usage in the process, divert spring seeps and surface runoff and install a system to enhance evaporation.IntroductionThe Republic area is an historic gold mining district. Hecla operated its Republic unit from 1892 until closure in 1994. The Kettle River Operation processing plant is located in the San Poi! river valley at an elevation of just under a thousand meters. The facility consists of a ninety thousand ton ore storage pad as the mines are remote and truck haulage is subject to interruption due to weather and road restrictions, jaw and cone crushing with screening, rod and ball milling to an eighty percent passing size of seventy five microns. This is followed by preaeration with high purity oxygen supplied by a vacuum pressure swing adsorption plant plus lead nitrate addition to achieve passivation of the sulfide mineralization such as chalcopyrite, pyrite and pyrrhotite. Conventional cyanide leaching and carbon in pulp adsorption completes the loop. Tailings are treated with air/S02 to achieve cyanide destruction. Plant capacity is 1,815 tons per day. Our license requires that there be no detectable free cyanide in the tailings pond water and a maximum of forty parts per million weak acid dissociable cyanide. The operation started in 1989 with production from the Overlook Mine located about five kilometers further up the same valley at an elevation of twelve hundred meters, hence the location of the mill. Current mine production comes from Lamefoot in the Curlew Lake valley, about ten kilometers distant, and K2 in the Kettle River valley about fifty kilometers away. Both are at an elevation of about 800 meters. Lamefoot produces 1,360 tons per day and K2, 455. Both are underground operations."

The use of lightweight aggregate as a constituent of concrete is not a recent development. Pumice was used by the early Romans, in pozzolana cement concretes, in the construction of many of their works. However, the recent development of manufactured lightweight aggregates, such as the expanded shales, vermiculite and perlite, has created a possible use for a whole new group of Portland cement concretes. Concrete can now be produced with unit weights ranging from 30 to 150 pounds per cubic foot and with various insulating, fireproofing, acoustical and structural properties. The tonnage of such materials being used has increased considerably in each of the past ten years, and can be expected to increase for the next several years as availability of the aggregates becomes more widespread and the properties of such concretes become more thoroughly investigated and more generally known. Despite this amendment, though, the important successor rules will continue to be relatively complex.IntroductionThe February 18, 1987, Federal Budget papers propose an income tax amendment whereby the so-called ""successor corporation"" rules would be revised by removing the present provision which limits the application of these rules to a maximum of two ""successions"". The successor corporation rules represent one of the most complicated sets of rules in the Income Tax Act. This month, Tax Notes seeks to explain these rules and the proposed amendment in simplified terms.Basically, the successor rules provide a mechanism for transferring unused exploration and development expenses from one taxpayer to another , in specified circumstances. The aforementioned limitation of two successions refers to the rule which allows a maximum of two such transfers with respect to any particular pool of deductions."

AN agreement having been arrived at in 1935 whereby McIntyre Porcupine Mines would purchase gravel for back-filling purposes from Hollinger Consolidated Gold Mines, the aerial gear as described below was installed. As originally discussed, the plan called for installation of a loading bin at the junction to the Hollinger tram, so making the McIntyre tram an entirely separate unit. The experience of the Hollinger engineers, however, went to prove that the operation of a bin (remote from sources of heat) should be avoided if possible, owing to the severe winter conditions (35° to 40° F. below zero).
