"INTRODUCTION The Segerstorm-Heizer property was examined by engineers 3/ of the Bureau of Mines in May and June 1942 and Mach 1943. As a result of these examination, the Nevada State Department of Highways,constructed 9.3 miles of graveled road under the mine access-road program. A magnetometer survey was made by the Geophysical Division 4/ in October 1943, and as a result the Mining Branch set up and conducted a core-drilling,project. Work on the deposit started May 24, 1944, and was suspended on July 31, 1944, but was resumed on December 4, 1944 and continued until completion on March 27, 1945.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as it, primary objective the more effective resource to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. 4. Guidelines for Implementing the Emergency Escapeway Standards for Metal and Nonmetal Mines The technical discussion of each escapeway component precedes the specific guidelines for the component. Generally, the technical discussion provides the background and reasoning behind the guidelines. Section 5 is a discussion of general escapeway requirements, including the escape route, fire retardants, warning systems, ventilation systems, escapeway signs and signals, auxiliary transportation and fuel storage. The discussion is followed by a list of guidelines pertaining to the escapeways. Section 6 is a summary of the computer simulation of an escapeway system for Mine "C". A complete documentation of the simulation is included in Appendix A and B. Section 7 covers emergency hoisting requirements and concludes with the guideline, for emergency hoists, their inspection and use. Section 8 is a discussion of refuge chambers and life support and is concluded with guidelines for the application o f this equipment.

PURPOSE: Evaluate practical technological advances in hearing protective devices for use in different mining environments. RESEARCH SUMMARY: Previous NIOSH research shows that miners develop hearing loss much more quickly than nonoccupationally noise-exposed individuals. Also, miners experience a greater severity of hearing loss than would be expected for nonoccupational noise-exposed persons of the same age and sex. As described in the National Occupational Research Agenda, problems created by occupational hearing loss include (1) the reduced quality of life due to social isolation and unrelenting tinnitus, (2) impaired communication with family members, the public, and coworkers,(3) a diminished ability to monitor the work environment (e.g., warning signals, equipment sounds, etc.), (4) lost productivity and increased accidents resulting from impaired communication and isolation, and (5) expenses for workers? compensation and hearing aids.

Respirable quartz duet and a kaolin clay dust have been found to be of comparable cytotoxic potential in vitro on a specific surface area basis (Wallace, et a1,1985), despite the distinctly different potentials of quartz and clay for causing pneumoconiosis or pulmonary fibrosis (Sheers, 1984). A respired particle depositing in a respiratory bronchiole or alveolus will contact a pulmonary surfactant hypophase, of which a primary component is diacyl glycerophosphorylcholine, or diacyl lecithin (DPL) (Clements, et al, 1970). Several studies have found that adsorption of such surfactant suppresses in vitro cytotoxic effects of quartz dust (Marks, 1957). Subsequent phagocytosis and digestion by a macrophage may remove the coating, restoring cytotoxic potential and initiating disease processes (Iles, 1979). Adsorption of dipalmitoyl lecithin (DPL) from emulsion in physiologic saline by respirable sized quartz dust and kaolin dusts, and consequent diminution of the dusts' hemolytic and macrophage cytotoxic potential have been reported (Wallace, et al, 1985). This report presents additional data on the cell-free in vitro phospholipase A2 enzymatic digestion of dipalmitoyl lecithin adsorbed on a quartz and a kaolin respirable sized dust (Wallace, et al, 1988) to investigate mineral specific differences in the rates of digestion and of consequent restoration of dust membranolytic potential. Respirable crystalline alpha quarts used was eighty percent smaller than 5 micorometer aerodynamic diameter with a nitrogen adsorption specific surface area of 3.97 m2/g. Respirable kaolin dust was ninety percent smaller than 5 micrometer diameter and had a specific surface area of 13.25 m2/g.

Landmines are a great threat to military vehicles and their occupants. Mine blasts can completely destroy vehicles and kill all the occupants or disable the vehicle and leave the occupants severely injured. Injuries sustained during a landmine blast come from fragmentation that enters the vehicle through a hull breach, hot gasses expanding through the vehicle, or shock created from the extreme pressure of the blast (Lafrance, L.P. 1998). Mitigating the high acceleration experienced by the occupants during survivable mine blasts is the focus of the research being addressed in this paper. Method The objective of the project reported in this paper was to prove the feasibility that pneumatic seat technologies that employ light-weight, foam-filled, inflatable air bladder seats and seat backs can be used to protect the crews of lightweight combat vehicles against the detrimental and injurious effects of mine blasts. This protection includes reducing the shock energy experienced by seated vehicle crews during mine blast initiation and at vehicle slam-down to below potentially injurious levels. Figure 1 shows a schematic representation of the proposed lightweight, foam-filled, inflatable mine blast attenuating seat. It will consist of specially designed interconnected seat and seat back lightweight, foam-filed, air bladders that are supported by a rigid frame. [ ] Results Air gun tests and finite element analyses were conducted to determine the effectiveness of a light-weight, foam-filled, inflatable air bladder seat shock isolation system in isolating a vehicle occupant from the injurious effects of a mine blast. Figures 2 through 5 show analytical and experimental results associated with a 65.8 kg mass resting on an inflatable air bladder that is exposed to a shock input.

This chapter analyses the parameters influencing initial design of communication systems, for new mines and upgrading existing systems. Paragraph 5.2 outlines those variables that must be taken into account during the design stages of a new wired phone system. Recommended features, general requirements, and how they can be implemented are treated in this section. Paragraph 5.3 describes ways of improving or extending the range of trolley carrier phone systems and pager phone systems already installed in the mine. 5.2 New Phone System Design The task of designing an adequate communication, control, and monitoring system for an underground mine must be addressed on a system basis. In addition to insuring that effective voice communication is established, any new system should take into account present and future requirements of remote control and monitoring functions. Chapter 4 illustrated the drastic savings in response time that can be realized when remote control and monitoring are integrated into the overall communication system. The importance of including control and monitoring in the overall design plan for any system cannot be overemphasized. Because each mine is unique, and thus usually has its own special operating characteristics and communication requirements, there is no such thing as "the one best system" to meet the requirements of all mines. The optimum communication, control, and monitoring system for a mine must be one that has been tailored to meet the special requirements of that particular mine. Factors that must be considered during system design include- a. Type of mine and mining methods (low- or high-seam coal, deep hardrock mine, stope caving, longwall, room and pillar, etc.). b. Maximum number of working sections. c. Expected mine growth rate and eventual maximum size. d. Haulage methods (tracked trolley, diesel, belt, etc.). e. Underground power distribution system (dc, ac, or both). f. Features desired (two-way radio paging, private line capability for emergency use, etc.). g. Redundant or backup systems for use during outages of the normal system. Although no two mines are alike, the following items have been established as the main characteristics desired for any underground communication system: 1. Multiple Communication Paths to Outside--the objective here is to give all telephones a second method of communicating with the surface. 2. Audible Emergency Signaling--the communication system provides the main means of alerting miners during emergencies. The system should include means to broadcast distinct audible signals for emergency signaling. Initiation of these signals should probably be controlled from. a central outside point, such as a surface control room. 3. Emergency Override--provisions should be included to permit any conversation to be overridden with emergency communication. 4. Selective Area Page--as mines grow larger it is apparent that the entire telephone system paging mode need not be activated each time a call is initiated. When the general area of a

Multiple-charged beams originating from a 300-kv ion accelerator are important tools in the study of metal surfaces and thin films. A knowledge of the particle range is necessary for an understanding of the interaction processes of the ions with the targets. Utilizing a theory developed by Lindhard for determining the range of low-energy ions in solids, the ranges of H, He, C, N, 0, and Ar ions in A1203, Al, Fe203, Fe304, CuO, Cu20, Fe, Cu, Sn, and W were calculated for the energy range 60 to 400 kev using a computer program written in BASIC. The range, presented in graphical form, is given in both µg/cm2 and angstroms. In addition, heavy ion ranges were calculated for comparison with published experimental values. For ions with Z > 5, the discrepancy between the calculated values and published experimental values generally ranged from 2 to 40 percent; the largest deviations were probably due to experimental error.

"Mineralogical Composition of Cyanite RockIn the group of minerals used in making this study, the cyanite is associated with quartz, mica, and feldspar in the schist. The amount of quartz is variable, but it is always an abundant mineral. Both large and small crystals of quartz occur in irregular masses, rarely ever showing crystal outline. Mica is of the clear and dark varieties the larger crystals being dark as a rule, and the finer crystals of light color, The present mineralogical composition of the mica is rather variable as most of the original biotite and muscovite have suffered alteration, and much secondary mica is present as a result of alteration of the original mica and other minerals present, especially the larger cyanite crystals. A large part of the mica now found in the ore is chlorite, with varying amounts of Jefferisite and others, especially sericite. These are in the form of aggregates, or felt-like intergrowths filling the spaces between the quartz, cyanile, and feldspar.The feldspar is plagioclase probably mostly albite. It is white, possesses good cleavage, and is one of the hard brittle minerals of the rock. It alters to kaolin, and sericite, and more or less of these alteration minerals are present within the feldspar crystals but not separated from them.The cyanite is of two varieties, distinguished by their colors as blue and white cyanite. The blue color varies in intensity, being a pronounced blue in some crystals and paler in shade in others. Some crystals have been seen which possess the blue color in one-half of their mass and are pure white or clear in the other half. The purity of the cyanite is probably not affected by the color, but it is difficult to detect the white cyanite in the ore by macroscopic examination, so that great care has to be exercised in the selection of the ore in the field."

High-grade synthetic rutile has been produced in the laboratory from domestic ilmenite concentrates by a new carbonyl process. The ilmenite was first reduced to convert the iron oxides to metal and then treated at temper-atures over 1000 C in high-pressure carbon monoxide (CO) to convert the iron to the pentacarbonyl. Rapid carbonylation was achieved in the presence of small quantities of selected promoters. Maximum iron removal occurred at temperatures between 110° and 130° C at CO pressures from 1,000 to 1,400 psig. Iron pentacarbonyl appeared as liquid and vapor in the reactor and could be removed by gravity flow and vapor transport. More than 90 pct of the iron was extracted in 2-hr experiments at pressures of 1,000 psig and above. The Ti02 product is porous owing to the removal of the iron, has the rutile crystal structure, and is suitable for chlorination. Waste disposal problems associated with the process would be minimal because the iron pentacarbonyl can be decomposed to produce iron powder or pellets for sale and CO for recycling.

To determine the relative permeability of the soil a series of percolation tests were performed at the three locations of interest at Lanse, i.e., 3C, 03A and strip bank, and KA and KB at Kato. Soil cores were removed to 2, 8, 16, 24 and 32 inch depths with the thin wall sampler tube, each core separated from the next by about fifteen feet. Then two-foot-long thin-wall tubes were inserted into the 2, 8, and 16 inch deep holes and three-foot long tubes were inserted into the 24 and 36 inch deep holes. Each tube was tamped down about one inch further to assure a bottom seal; the tubes were filled with water and the rate of fall was measured. The test is similar to those done for septic tank percolation studies 6; but is not quantitatively related to Darcy's coefficient of hydraulic conductivity because the water can flow in three dimensions from the bottom of the tube. The measurements are dependent on the length of test, since the rate of fall is a function of the head. Therefore, it should be noted that the 24 and 32 inch deep tubes should give faster percolation rates because of the one foot greater head. At locations 03A and 3C the data show a sharp decrease in percolation at increasing depth, Table XV. However, the percolation at 03A and 32 inch depth is much higher than at 3C (0.2 vs. 0.01 inches/hour); the fragipan layer must be deeper at the 3C location since this area does experience a perched water table. On the strip bank the rates of falling head are randomly variable, appearing to be as much dependent on the particular location of insertion as on depth of placement. For example, water drained from the 16 inch tube as fast as it was added, probably into a sub-surface cavity or crevice. At Kato the tubes were more difficult to place because of interference of tree roots. For this reason 2 inch deep tubes were not inserted. These short tests at Kato were inconclusive, varying extensively when the tubes were moved. Field permeability tests were also performed in two (previously described) eight-inch diameter permeater tubes at Lanse and one at Kato. Because the soil is confined inside the tube, hydraulic conductivity can be calculated according to Darcy's flow equation. The high values reported in Table XVI experienced when the tubes were rewetted from a dry surface condition, enable us to conclude that infiltration is faster than the saturated permeability of the soil. In contrast to the falling head percolation tests, these permeability results do not show a high variation between locations.

Nineteen quarry blasts were instrumented with particle-velocity gages mounted in a uniform soil overburden, back of one face in a quarry in Iowa. Three components of particle velocity, radial, vertical, and transverse, were recorded at each of eight stations back of each blast. Distances from blast area to gage stations ranged from 150 to 3,000 feet. Eleven of the quarry blasts employed millisecond delays, and eight were instantaneous blasts. Charge weight per hole was 200 pounds, and the charge weight per delay interval, including the instantaneous blasts, ranged from 100 to 3,000 pounds. Analysis of the data from these tests shows that the particle velocity, V, produced at distance, D, by a quarry blast of charge per delay interval, W, can be represented by an equation of the form, V=KWb D-n, where b and n are exponents, and K is the intercept constant which is a measure of the level of vibration. The value of K for a millisecond-delayed blast employing one hole per delay interval is about 42 percent larger than the value of K for a single-hole blast. The value of K for a multiple-hole milli-second-delayed blast is about the same as that for an instantaneous blast when the charge per delay for the millisecond blast is equal to the total charge for the instanteneous blast. The vibration level from millisecond-delayed blasts employing one hole per delay is shown to be independent of the length of the delay interval and the number of delay intervals over the range of the variables tested: 9, 17, and 34 milliseconds and 3, 7, and 15 delays per blast.

Cost System The cost system reported here is a suite of computer programs which incorporates the logic and information flow structure as outlined in earlier chapters. Specifically, computer programs have been devel¬oped to: 1. compute labor, operating, and capital costs, 2. summarize cost and production data, and 3. compute the minimum acceptable selling price for coal. While the cost system can be executed independently, it is de¬signed primarily for use with the Master Design Simulator and there¬fore must conform to the overall system hardware. The computer model is written in Fortran IV for use with the IBM System 360/370 computers as well as with compatible units such as the Univac 1110 and CDC-6600. For ease in error detection and program modification, the model was constructed with a main routine and eight subroutines. The main routine reads and stores the data necessary for the cost computations and calls the subroutines in logical sequence. The subroutines perform the cost computations and data adjustments for reporting purposes. Each subroutine performs the cost computations for its particular com¬ponent of the cost cycle. The program operations are described in the following narrative outline. Control Subsystem As previously described, the main routine is a passive element, reading and storing input data and directing execution to the active subroutines for cost calculations. In spite of this ;;renter use, very little consideration has been given to the hazard that might be occasioned by the toxic vapors of mercury unavoidably spilled' of otherwise exposed to the atmosphere during the normal procedure of laboratory open at ions. A simple visual examination ).'.' son-,, r° the laboratories reveal the presence of a considerable quantity of mercury in the cracks of floors, on work tables, and on ark, around equipment stands. Usually this mercury is contaminated with oil3/ and dirt so that it remaining in a finely divided state and a ;mall amount pre presents a relatively large surface for evaporation. This report contains a description of the contract activities performed by ENSCO, Inc. under contract No. H0178069. The purpose of this project was to enhance the Bureau of Mine's Cableless Electronic Survey System use to aid in the drilling of long (approx. 2000 feet) boreholes in coal. This drilling is performed as part of the methane drainage program. The system that was ultimately developed was field tested and demonstrated in actual in-mine drilling activities. The significance of this system as compared to previous drill survey systems is the fact that it surveys without having to be inserted and removed for each survey point. It is so designed that it can withstand the shock and vibration experience by the drill string during drilling. This means an increased productivity is now possible in that drill operators can determine drill bit positioning in a near real-time environment.
