Grouting is a useful engineering tool for tunnels throughout the world. A wide variety of methods and materials are used, reflecting the broad range of geological, hydrogeological, and structural demands. Most tunnel grouting is conducted with cement, which produces acceptable results in appropriate conditions. However, there are cases where such grouts are not practical, but polyurethane grouts can be extremely useful. Regretfully, these grouts are frequently poorly understood, leading to improper application and therefore poor results. This paper provides a fundamental overview of their application, both used individually and in combination with cement. Case histories from Scandinavian practice are cited.

The development of the most important tool used in Site Testing is reviewed briefly and the application of the information gained is described. The operation of Site Testing and pregrouting of underground excavations is dealt with in detail. Practical experiences (and pitfalls into which the inexperienced might fall) are recorded. But for the application of Site Testing and grouting of shafts, tunnels and other excavations, vast areas of the present goldfields in South Africa would remain unexploitable.

Coal in most refuse ponds including those owned by Consolidation Coal Company can be recovered by froth flotation techniques. Laboratory studies show that the flotation conditions required for coal recovery varied greatly from pond to pond. The variables found to be most important for high coal recovery and low product ash were: a) the amount and type of flotation reagents and b) the degree of conditioning before flotation. Coal recovery at a rate of 0.504 kg/s (2 tons/hr) was demonstrated at a pond site employing a mobile froth flotation unit.

Through a joint development program between Bougainville Copper Ltd. and Nordberg, the MP1000 cone crusher was developed and tested during the period between 1982 and 1987. Following the successful prototype work, Bougainville Copper purchased an additional three units. A second prototype was installed at Codelco's El Teniente three-stage crushing installation in 1987. This unit has also completed its test period successfully. Three additional units have been sold, making a total of eight, to date. Two will be installed as secondary crushers in two separate large aggregate plants. The first unit installed in the United States was placed in operation at Vulcan Materials Company's plant in Manassas, Virginia in early May 1990. Another unit is being installed in Asarco's Ray Mines expansion. The Asarco installation will be a SAG MILL pebble crusher producing approximately 600 STPH of nominal 1/2" product. Application Objective The objective was to design a crusher that would fit on an existing 7' foundation with minimum modification and yet be capable of twice the production of a 7' cone crusher. In meeting this objective, the power rating was increased to 1000 HP, the maximum design crushing force was increased and the crusher was designed to operate at higher speeds than an equivalent size Symons cone crusher. The MP1000 was also designed to operate with a head throw that can be greater than the equivalent Symons design. Although beryllium was initially discovered in 1797, it was not until 1916 that the first significant quantity of beryllium metal ingot was produced in the United States. Before 1940, most of the small quantity of beryllium metal used in the United States was supplied by Germany. Beryllium was not used in its metallic form; it was used as an alloying addition to other metals, mainly copper and nickel. World consumption of beryllium at that time was estimated to be a few hundred kilograms annually. Because of increased tensions in Europe before World War II, imports of metal from Germany ceased in 1940, and domestic production was required to meet the needs of the military. As a result, by 1946, the United States became the principal supplier of beryllium products for the world, a condition that prevails today. Because of beryllium's high strength, light weight, and high thermal conductivity, it has been used in a large number of industrial and defense applications as a metal, alloy, and oxide. The United States is the only country other than China and the former USSR currently producing beryllium products from beryllium ores and concentrates. Bertrandite, mined in Utah, is the principal ore source of domestically produced products. Imported ore, mainly from Brazil, supplements domestic ore supplies. Effluents discharged from gold mills, and more recently from heap leaching operations, pose significant hazards to the environment if not properly managed prior to discharge. This paper describes the nature of wastewaters which must be treated, the treatment processes being applied in Canada and the capabilities of these methods in removing cyanide and metals. As a result of past practice the most common method of reducing cyanide in gold mill effluents remains that of natural degradation in tailings ponds. This method has proven capable of producing high quality effluents where large ponds and sufficiently long water retention times can be provided, but at many mines this has not been the case. Since 1981, as a result of these limitations there has been a strong move in Canada to chemically-based effluent treatment plants, particularly as additional processes became available. Canadian gold mills have become leaders in the use of chemical processes to remove cyanide, in terms of the variety of such processes in operation (five in total), the number of plant installations and the number of processes developed in this country. The hydrogen peroxide and Inco SO2-air processes, in that order, are being applied most widely. Alkaline chlorination, the initial process to be used fairly extensively has been almost totally replaced by the two methods mentioned above. The McKinley Mine is located in the northwest New Mexico, in McKinley County, approximately 25 miles from Gallup. The mine is operated by The Pittsburg & Midway Coal Mining Co. (P&M), a wholly owned subsidiary of the Chevron Corporation. P&M is headquartered in Englewood, Colorado. Since the McKinley Mine began operations in 1962 a total of 83,391,000 metric tons of coal have been sold through 1990. The 1991 production was approximately 5.000.000 metric tons. The mine operations are contained on a 109.000 square kilometers lease area of which 44.000 square kilometers are on the Navajo Nation. The present customer base consists of four utilities and one industrial account, all of which are located in Arizona. The utility customers are the Arizona Public Service Co. Cholla Station at Joseph City, The Salt River Project. Coronado Generating Station near Joseph City, and The Tucson Electric Company, Irvington Generating Station in Tucson. The industrial customer is the Stone Container Corporation, Snowflake Paper Mill.

Industrial minerals deposits present sampling and grade control problems not normally encountered in metal mining operations. No longer are industrial minerals simply crude ground mineral products but are in fact high purity chemical raw materials. Operators of industrial minerals mines and processing plants now must meet increasingly stringent specifications established by the consumer of the final products. Meeting these stringent specifications requires not only sophisticated processing techniques but equally important careful sampling and grade or quality control at the mine. A well-trained geological staff can assure an adequate supply of uniformily high quality feed to the processing plant. In the final analysis this results in significantly higher operating profits.

Recent work to upgrade the ventilation system for the el Mochito lead/zinc mine in central Honduras is discussed. Network modeling and underground measurements were used to evaluate cost-effective alternatives for achieving satisfactory ventilation in a complex and expanding underground operation. Both interim and long-term solutions were implemented to make mining possible under difficult conditions. INTRODUCTION Mining operations at the el Mochito Mine, located in the central highlands of Honduras, Central America, have been virtually continuous since the opening of the mine in 1948. Initially a high-grade silver mine, the mine has expanded along a westward trend of pipe-like orebodies to a distance of roughly one mile from two centrally located shafts. Production of the relatively large San Juan orebody at the western most extension of the mine (Paddock, 1981) led to the introduction of diesel-powered equipment; however, the ventilation infrastructure was insufficient to meet the needs of mechanized mining. A succession of owners/operators in the 1980s allowed the existing ventilation infrastructure to decay to the point that ventilation in the production areas of the mine was very poor. Environmental conditions in some working areas were not conducive to efficient ore extraction because of high dry bulb temperature, high humidity, and diesel emissions. Upon acquiring the mine in 1990, Breakwater Resources of Tucson, Arizona began an aggressive program to refurbish the mine infrastructure to complete extraction of the San Juan orebody and to allow the extension of the mine another 2500 ft to the west for extraction of the Nacional orebody. The program included increasing the capacity of the main ventilation system. This article presents a case history of the process of upgrading the ventilation system in a mine where extensive old workings cause large air leakage. This process has been one of selecting solutions to difficult technical problems that are compatible with the existing mine infrastructure and economic constraints. The initial ventilation system is described in the background section, along with ventilation projections for the mine expansion. Field characterization of the ventilation system for design verification and fan specification is then discussed. The paper describes a series of interim changes to the system to improve ventilation pending completion of new ventilation boreholes. In addition, the temperature/ heat problems in the mine are described. BACKGROUND Initial Condition of Ventilation System The ventilation system is illustrated in Figure 1, which shows the extent of mining with the main ventilation paths superimposed. Early mining around the two shafts opened up vertical connections (stopes and raises) over the entire 2420 ft (737.6 m) of vertical extent, and mining progressed to the west primarily using compressed air and electric-powered equipment. Since ventilation was not a complex problem in the original mining system, the stopes and interconnecting raises were not sealed. The San Juan orebody was much larger than the silver ore zones mined previously, being primarily zinc and other base metals. Its geometry, size, and grade allowed the use of vertical crater retreat (VCR) stoping with diesel mucking and haulage equipment. Its depth, along with the existence of warm groundwater, resulted in a mine climate problem on the lower levels. To establish a complete ventilation circuit, two vertical boreholes (Bonanza Nos. 1 and 2) had been drilled by previous owners from the surface in the vicinity of the San Juan orebody. The system design called for air to be drawn down the intake shafts, across the lower mine levels to the San Juan workings, then up through the San Juan ramps and ore passes to these two exhaust boreholes (see Figure 1). In practice, however, only the Bonanza No. 1 borehole was drawing air through the desired path. Leakage across the old upper levels from the intake shafts, the Caliche tunnel, and from intervening abandoned stopes and raises supplied most of the air flowing to the base of the Bonanza No. 2 borehole. In effect, there were two ventilation circuits in semi-parallel through the mine, of which only one was delivering appreciable air to the San Juan workings.

The application of conveyor belting in bulk materials handling is crucial to the success of most mining enterprise selection of the cover rubber grade and thickness has a direct bearing on the cost per ton conveyed. Current and future demands placed on belt covers by higher speeds, increase capacities and greater lifts means today's cover will not be adequate for tomorrow's applications. The simple selections of RMA Grade I and I1 and MSHA above and below ground need to be expanded upon. This paper describes various new approaches for selecting conveyor belt covers for specific applications. It also presents examples of material and compounding techniques available to the belt manufacturer to improve the performance of their covers.

Since the first recorded discovery of lead in southeast Missouri near Fredericktown about 1720, knowledge of the deposits has advanced in spurts as a result of outlying discoveries: 1864 Bonne Terre 1890 Flat River, Desloge, Leadwood 1948 Indian Creek 1955 Viburnum The original discoveries at Bonne Terre consisted of residual galena in clay, similar to that in the previous finds at Fredericktown. Occurrences in solid dolomite were not noted until mining of the clay pits exposed the walls of the weathered depressions. The St. Joseph Lead Co. had been established to conduct the operations and it was J. Wyman Jones, first president of St. Joe, who at that time brought about the first of the technological advances that were to occur in the district. He proposed use of the newly invented diamond drill to explore the bedrock showings, after observing the machines in the Vermont Marble Belt.

Today the longwall is getting increasing attention in the United States as an excellent way to mine coal. This is not to say it is the best way in every mine because conditions, capital costs, and markets may well dictate another method. However, operators with working longwalls are often showing preference by phasing out room-and-pillar sections and replacing them with longwall. In the United States there are about 90 longwalls in operating coal mines and the number is increasing. In Europe, 95% of underground coal mining is by longwall compared with only 5% in the United States. In the Western States about 25% of the underground coal mines use longwall mining. There is logic behind the increase in longwalling. Compared to room-and-pillar mining, straight single-pass longwall has important advantages that show up in underground coal mining in any part of the country.

A popular perception by the public and many mining claimants, is that the 1872 Mining Law provides a statutory right to mine and extract minerals from the public lands. This perception in reality, is both true and false, depending on the mining claimants' ability to meet federal and state environmental, cultural and endangered species laws. Land use decisions and proposed legislation affect exploration and development opportunities in California. It is imperative that the mining industry involve itself in the planning process to ensure that BLM decision makers are fully informed of industry's knowledge and concerns. STATUTORY RIGHTS AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONSTRAINTS "No other problem has such a sense of urgency and poses as profound consequences to the quality of life and the creation and distribution of societal wealth as how we protect the environment. Certainly, the environment is the single biggest issue facing mining and mineral activities in the new decade. David S. Brown The 1872 Mining Law was passed, ironically, the same year the nation's first National Park was established. It is a perception that the establishment of Yellowstone National Park was the beginning of the United States' earliest environmental movement; brought on, perhaps, by the rapid clearing of land for homesteading purposes and, the concern that many acres of the public domain were being disposed of through a multitude of public land laws. While there was an effort being made to designate some special and unique public lands as parks for preservation purposes, environmental concern and awareness did not lead to mandatory identification of environmental impacts and appropriate mitigation until the passage of the National Environmental Policy Act in 1970. Consequently, it is not surprising that the original United States Mining Laws of 1866, 1870 and 1872 had no mention of environmental protection. There have been numerous attempts to repeal the 1872 Mining Law over the last 50 years for a variety of reasons. Currently, there is a perception by the general public, media and even some in congress, the mining industry and BLM that a change is needed. The environmental organizations want the industry to be more accountable for reclamation and post mining uses. In Tn nEnvironmental Agenda for the Future," leaders of America's foremost environmental organizations state that the mining law "includes no protection for the environment," and therefore, should be reformed. We can all acknowledge, as stated above, that the mining law, per se, requires no "protection. However, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) clearly has the authority and the responsibility to fully "protect" non-mineral resources while providing for the extraction and processing of mineral resources by private industry. There are about 13 major federal laws that have indirectly or directly amended the mining laws to require Environmental, Historic and Cultural Protection." There have been many mining law case decisions about the statutory and constitutional rights of miners to explore open federal lands, "stake a claimg" and extract minerals. What needs to be fully understood is how federal laws, as enumerated on Table 1, may affect these rights. What follows is a description of

Several researchers in the last 20 years have developed computer simulation models for designing coal mine belt systems. A careful review of these reveals that each omitted or oversimplified important factors, especially in belt loading. To remedy this, the coal mine belt capacity simulator (CMBCS) was developed to include various types of probability distributions, delays, and longwall and continuous haulage. CMBCS is computer coded in FORTRAN and employs the Monte Carlo simulation technique. Basically, the model simulates the loading and corresponding flow of coal through a belt system. By recording spillage and belt stoppage statistics for the simulated flow, belt and surge bin capacities can be evaluated. A complete user's guide is available. The modeling and verification of CMBCS are briefly described, and its major advantages and disadvantages are explored.

Noise induced hearing loss (NIHL) continues to be a problem in the mining industry. New noise standards (Part 62) promulgated by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) are aimed at reducing NIHL in the mining industry. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is conducting a cross-sectional survey of noise sources and worker noise exposures to address NIHL in mining. Noise surveys, including full-shift worker noise exposure and equipment noise profiling, have been completed in several surface coal mines, with an emphasis on draglines. The results of these studies are reported, their implications concerning worker NIHL are addressed, and their application to administrative and engineering controls is discussed.

This study was concerned with the application of a computer simulation methodology to optimize the performance of mills grinding iron ore concentrate prior to pelletizing. The methodology involves batch and plant testing, modeling and computer simulation. The analysis of grinding performance was carried out and capacity increases were predicted in the context of detailed population balance models developed for the plant ball mills. Model developnent and plant confirmation were performed using data obtained in a series of batch tests and three plant tests. From experimental data and computer simulation it was found that ball size, percent solids and classification all had a significant effect on mill throughput. Based on the findings of this study, a 12-152 increase in capacity was predicted to be available by a proper combination of ball size charge and optimum percent solids. These predictions have been confirmed by plant tests in which the recommended operating changes have been made.

It is possible to divide the general objectives of a company into two components: maximum expected profits and viability over time. These components are designed to maximize the companies value over time. The evaluation of a project includes both a discounted cash flow (DCF) analysis and a risk analysis. The DCF analysis determines whether the project should be accepted or rejected, and the risk analysis helps to forecast possible deviations from the original estimates. However, the results of both methods do not allow for a quantitative comparison between the main objectives of the venture, and they do not resolve the issue of whether it is advisable to sacrifice immediate profits for future profits. This paper attempts to resolve this issue. The present research was carried out on mining projects with different waste-extraction schedules. Calculations were made using the US Bureau of Mines' usage-of-costs model. Russian experience in open-pit mining is reflected in this paper.

The biological removal of calcium from a bauxite ore in the presence of the soil bacterium Paenibacillus polymyxa is demonstrated. A column bioreactor that can be either operated in a fluidized-bed (FB) mode for coarser particles or in a total-recycle-slurry (TRS) mode for finer particles was designed, fabricated and tested for this purpose. For the efficient removal of calcium from the ore to the required levels, leach solution should not be allowed to accumulate in the reactor. Therefore, the solution needs to be drained out periodically. Cascade leaching was found to be more effi¬cient. A direct correlation between pH changes in the leach solution and calcium solubility could be made. More than 85% of the calcium could be removed through cascade leaching.

Use of prestressed concrete cylinder pipe (PCCP) for pressure tunnel liners is gaining popularity with contractors, engineers, and owners. This paper presents loading considerations and a beam-spring computer model approach to tunnel liner analysis, together with ultimate strength (US) and service load (SL) procedures for liner design. The US procedure is best suited to check for adequate liner strength under extreme loading conditions. The SL procedure, based on conventional pipeline design practice, is considered more appropriate when addressing crack control and serviceability under normal working load conditions. Other design and construction considerations are discussed and a design example is presented.
