Predictive maintenance technologies include vibration analysis, tribology, infrared thermography, ultrasonic detection and electrical measurements. These technologies have been applied to large electric mining shovels at the Cyprus Sierrita Mine outside of Tucson, AZ. The predictive maintenance program was initiated on the P&H models 2300 and 4100 electric shovels during August 1996. Results of these technologies have shown the potential for improving electric min- ing shovel availability and minimizing maintenance costs. Predictive technologies provide the tools to assess machinery condition. Availability is enhanced by the condition-based planning of component replacement. Maintenance costs are minimized by focusing resources through condition-based prioritization.

Laboratory testing was carried out to evaluate several devices for recovering clean coal from bituminous coal refuse material. The bulk of the testing focused on using a dense-medium cyclone to process -0.6-mm refuse material. A hindered-settling column and a spiral concentrator were also used to process nominal 1.2 x 0.15-mm material. Product yields and ash contents were obtained for all tests, while partition curves were generated for selected tests from which the characteristic performance parameters (relative density of separation and probable error) were determined. The results indicated that the dense-medium cyclone was capable of cleaning down to 0.037 mm, while the other devices were effective to 0.15 mm. Through the early stages of metamorphism, when diffusion is the predominant mineral forming process. there is a tendency toward homogenization of rock units; but there is also zoning resulting from differing primary lithology and structure. Later stages of metamorphism, when infiltration occurs, tend to intensify zoning within the rock mass. The above concepts have been borne out in exploration of talc deposits and skarns. Initially, geologic mapping and soil sampling are directed to understanding mineralogy and petrology. Later, seismic methods are employed to further define lithology in the subsurface. Magnetometer surveys can also define some metamorphic units efficiently. Then, drilling must ensue to confirm lithology and determine extent of mineralization.

A systematic slope design for open-pit mines has become a reality only in recent years. Advances in the science of rock mechanics, coupled with extensive use of computers, have enabled the numerical solution of slope design problems which were not previously amenable to analytical or numerical solution. This slope stability study was performed for the UJV-SB open-pit uranium mine of the Getty Oil Co., located in the Shirley Basin area, Wyoming. The purpose of the study was to determine the appropriate slope angles for a starter pit. The data generated during the mining of the starter pit would test the initial design and suggest appropriate modification in the design for future mining in the project area. There had been a history of slope failures in the open-pit uranium mines in the area due to the low competency of the overburden materials and adverse hydrological conditions.

Introduction A mine characteristic curve is of great importance for both theoretical analysis and daily management of a mine ventilation network. Ventilation engineers are well acquainted with the ways of obtaining and using a mine characteristic curve that is conventionally associated only with single-fan networks. However, for a multiple-fan network, difficulty has long been recognized in defining the curve, not to mention, obtaining or using it. To extend the concept of mine characteristic curves for a multiple-fan network, a subsystem-based approach has been introduced by Wang (1992a). He defines a subsystem characteristic curve for a multiple-fan network and discusses the numerical procedure for constructing the curve. A graphical method of obtaining a subsystem characteristic curve for serial-parallel, multiple-fan networks has also been accomplished (Wang, 1992b). In spite of the maturity of the fundamental concepts related to and the numerical analysis tool for a multiple-fan ventilation network, information regarding the related laboratory tests is very scarce. To make up this gap, laboratory experiments have been done by using a two-fan experimental network. This paper presents the methodology and major findings regarding the construction and features of a subsystem characteristic curve. Characteristic curves and measurement fundamentals A characteristic curve A characteristic curve is a graphic presentation of the relationship between any two variables of a two-terminal component. It is typically defined in the form of a quantity-pressure curve for a ventilation component, which can be a single branch (airway), a fan, a regulator, a portion of a network or even a whole network. If a component is a single branch, the curve is called a branch characteristic curve. If it is a fan, then the curve is called a fan characteristic curve, and so on. Figure I illustrates the characteristic curves of some typical ventilation components. A general method for obtaining a characteristic curve from measurement is to apply an adjustable-pressure source between the two terminals of a component and measure the quantities corresponding to the different pressures. Mine characteristic curve A single-fan network can be easily divided into two ventilation components, the fan and the remaining network. The latter consists of only branches and regulators. Under this subdivision scheme, two characteristic curves can be constructed. They are the fan characteristic curve and the characteristic curve of the remaining network. The latter is referred to as the mine characteristic curve or the system characteristic curve. Although the general method for constructing a characteristic curve from measurement can be applied to obtain a mine characteristic curve, there is a shortcut for constructing the curve by introducing a mine resistance factor R. It is a constant if all of the resistance factors in the network are constant. R relates mine pressure H with quantity Q as in: H=RQ2 (1) For a given R, Eq. (1) can be directly used to plot a mine characteristic curve by assigning a series of Q values and calculating the corresponding H values. Hence a shortcut to constructing a mine characteristic curve is to measure one set of mine pressure H and quantity Q values, calculate the mine resistance factor R using Eq. (1) and then plot the curve. Subsystem characteristic curve Applying a similar scheme as is used for a single-fan system, divide a multiple-fan network into two components, a fan under consideration and the remaining network that contains all the other elements (branches, regulators and remaining fans) of the network. INTRODUCTION Large areas of the United States coal reserves have been undermined by room-and-pillar mining over the past century. These abandoned mines generally cause subsidence of the ground surface many decades after mining. Reports from England (1) where there is a longer history of room-and-pillar mining indicate that mines abandoned two centuries ago may still be causing subsidence, and causing surface destruction to urban areas or farm lands that have been developed in the interim. The devastation wrought by subsidence, both in terms of property loss and societal disruption is enormous. The authors discuss here the methods by which subsidence in abandoned mines may be controlled. Two distinctly different subsidence control technologies have been developed in the U.S. for abandoned coal mines. These are referred to as (1) Point Sup- port methods, and (2) Areal Backfilling. As the names imply, point support methods are used to protect individual structures, or even individual foundation elements of structures, whereas areas backfilling techniques may be applied to protect entire neighborhoods or urban districts hundreds of acres in extent. Both point support methods and areal backfilling have specific sub-categories of techniques that may be applied under different conditions as appropriate. POINT SUPPORT METHODS Point support methods are characteristically employed by civil engineers chartered with the design of a new structure or the protection of an existing structure. The subsidence control measures are only a part of a larger project, the safety of which must be assured to a degree of near certainty. The costs of point support methods involve a large number of bore-holes and the use of expensive materials in relatively small quantities. There exist several dozen point support methods, which operate either to support the underground cavities, controlling subsidence, or to isolate the structure from the effects of subsidence if it should occur. The latter methods usually involve deep foundations through the mine opening supporting the structure on the underlying strata. Our concern will be with the former method to support underground cavities to prevent subsidence. Gravel Columns and Associated Methods Gravel columns may be placed in the mine opening using the methods shown in [Figure 1]. Boreholes are drilled through the mine strata, and gravel poured down the borehole to form a pile on the mine floor. When the tip of the pile contacts the mine roof, it is rodded down to spread the pile, and permit additional gravel to be placed. The objective is to place as much gravel as possible in the mine opening, and to achieve firm contact with the mine roof. The gravel pile acts to reduce subsidence by three mechanisms. The filling of a significant fraction of the open mine volume reduces the amount of potential subsidence simply by killing open volume within the mine. In effect, the extraction ratio has been reduced by introducing the volume of gravel. The toe of the gravel pile abuts against nearby pillars, providing lateral support and protection against pillar deterioration. In effect, the height of the pillars has been slightly reduced by burying their lower portions. Finally, some direct support is provided to the roof strata, reducing the roof span and enhancing stability. The gravel column method may be used in a variety of applications, and with materials other than gravel. For example, gravel columns may be placed in a close line around the perimeter of the building to form a continuous gravel wall. The interior of the site may then be completely filled with sand, slurry or other material. Alternatively, a lean concrete may be used in place of gravel, so that the piles achieve significant structural capacity. The grout column, shown in [Figure 2], begins with the installation of a conventional gravel column which is placed around a grout pipe that extends through the borehole into the mine opening. When the gravel column is in place, portland cement grout is injected in stages. At each stage, sufficient grout is injected to fill the interstices in the gravel to build a column perhaps two meters in diameter and a meter tall. This paper covers the development of the Yeelirrie Uranium Project from the discovery of the Yeelirrie deposit in 1970 to the present time, with emphasis on the mining, processing, and environmental requirements of the project. The Yeelirrie Uranium Project is managed by the "Yeelirrie Uranium Joint Venture Partnership", which, when formed, consisted of Yeelirrie Development Company Pty., Ltd., Urangesellschaft, Australia Pty. Ltd. and Esso Exploration and Production Australia Inc. The Yeelirrie Uranium Joint Venture Partnership holds mineral claims over the Yeelirrie uranium ore deposit in Western Australia. This deposit encompasses some 35 million tonnes of ore containing in excess of 50,000 tonnes of uranium as U308. Agreement has been reached with the State of Western Australia to mine and process the ore to produce uranium ore concentrate. The Project scope provides for an open-cut mine, alkaline leach hydrometallurgy plant, power plant, township, airstrip, access roads, community services and utilities. The Yeelirrie Uranium Project described herein has progressed through the stages of exploration, mine evaluation, process testing, project scope definition, environmental approval, Pilot Plant operation, preliminary engineering and the publishing of a definitive Project Feasibility Study. This article summarizes the project development through the above stages.

INTRODUCTION This presentation will address changing trade patterns in lead and zinc from the mid 1980's to the early 1990's. Lead and zinc deposits are developed where they are found in many parts of the world. As many are not in major consuming areas, there is significant international trade in both lead and zinc concentrates and in refined metal. Forecasts of mine production have been analyzed, primary and secondary refining capacity and future consumption levels have been estimated, to arrive at the changes in trade patterns expected during the next half decade. This paper will first address concentrate and metal trade patterns for lead, then for zinc, and finally some remarks will be made on captive mine/smelter agreements, on regional trade agreements, and on barriers to trade. I would like to note that. there is only a small international trade in semi-fabricated products such as zinc die-cast alloy, zinc oxide, lead oxide or rolled lead and zinc. Most of the world's zinc and lead trade is in concentrates or refined metal. LEAD TRADE PATTERNS Lead Concentrates Six countries are exporters of lead concentrates. Three countries are in the Americas - Canada, Mexico and Peru, with two in Africa - Morocco and South Africa (including Namibia), and Australia. Due to the limited growth in lead consumption and consequent minimum investment in new production facilities expected, mine and metal production levels and future consumption levels are not forecast to change much between now and 1990. Accordingly, the tonnage of lead concentrates exported will remain essentially unchanged from these six countries. In total they have exports of 480,000 metric tonnes (metal content)* and by 1990 this figure is forecast to rise only slightly with the only increase taking place in Mexico. The concentrates are exported mainly to Western Europe & Japan. Apart from these six main lead concentrate exporting nations, a significant change is expected in the United States. This paper reviews the importance, technological developments and application limits of roadheaders based on the case histories, which are compiled in a database including different roadheaders in various geological conditions. The paper also discusses the database and empirical performance prediction studies regarding instantaneous cutting rates and bit consumption rates.

"Qatar’s capital Doha is undergoing major infrastructure improvements including a multiphase stormwater management program. Although located in an arid climate, Doha experiences flooding during rainfall events. Dewatering operations and rising groundwater levels add to the management needs. To address those needs, construction of the Musaimeer collection tunnel along Doha’s southern rim is being followed by a marine outfall tunnel connecting a pump station to a dispersion field 10 km offshore. Qatar’s geology is characterized by sabkha deposits, a series of predominantly weak and karstic rock strata that creates challenging conditions for mechanized tunneling, as highlighted by the uncontrolled flooding of a tunnel boring machine (TBM) used on the Doha Metro tunnels. Risk associated with these challenges is magnified for the outfall tunnel by drive length, sub-sea elevation, and a single access point. This paper describes the outfall exploration strategy and design decisions made in light of experience gained during the collection tunnel construction. CONTEXT – STORMWATER MANAGEMENT PROGRAM Qatar has an arid climate with an average annual precipitation of less than 100 mm. Precipitation is mostly confined to the winter months when rare, but occasionally heavy rainfall events easily lead to flooding in Doha’s metropolitan area. Its coastal location and flat topography a few meters above the sea level mean that the depth to the groundwater table is generally shallow. The karstic aquifers in the regional dolomite and limestone series contain groundwater of high salinity, which is not suitable as a potable water source. For supplying Doha’s population of more than 900,000 (2014) with potable water, the Ras Abu Fontas seawater desalination plant is operated about 10 km south of the city. This potable water production capacity is crucial for Doha’s development and – in conjunction with overirrigation and leaking sewage tanks – is also the root cause for rising groundwater tables that have been observed over the past years."

The mining industry is an easy target for criticism from an environmentally sensitive society. Recent researches discovered that human activities, including mining. cannot be blamed for all of the pollution observed on earth. Interdisciplinary research is providing diagnostic and remedial solutions to problems such as acid mine drainage and cyanide-polluted streams. Researchers have also found that mercury-bearing hot springs and volcanic eruptions are partly responsible for some pollution. Geochemists, mining geologists, engineers, and environmental scientists can pool their efforts to make the environment cleaner and safer. Remote sensing of the environment and the use of microbes may become much more popular in the near future in the mining-environment arena.

Copper dump and heap leaching operations are conducted worldwide for production of substantial amounts of copper Such dumps and heaps contain appreciable amounts of other potentially valuable elements such as gold, Iron, magnesium, manganese, molybdenum, silver, titanium, and uranium. Except for uranium, recovery of these elements has not been attempted to any significant extent However, such recovery merits attention based upon availability of existing chemical techniques. This paper presents some thoughts on possible techniques together with opportunities for commercial applications.

The adsorption of the cyano complexes of Ag(I). Cu(l), Hg(II), Cd(II), and Zn(II) on activated carbon was investigated as a function of pH and correlated with the speciation diagram for each metal. The results show marked changes in uptake with pH, closely resembling the predominance profiles of their neutral and singly charged cyano complexes. Multicharged negative complexes are repelledby the negatively charged carbon surface. The sensitivity of activated carbon to the charge of the adsorbing species indicates that silver adsorbs as an anion, not chemically bound to the coadsorbing counterions. For the same reason, activated carbon is selective to metals that preferentially form neutral and singly charged cyano complexes, namely gold and silver.

In deposits with highly skewed grade distributions, such as precious metals deposits, proper handling of the outlier high grade data is very crucial to the ore reserve estimation. Although some recent geostatistical techniques are available to handle the estimation problems with these outlier data, ordinary kriging or conventional methods are still widely used to estimate the ore reserves for such deposits. One reason for this is the fact that the alternative methods offered are either too complex or too exhaustive for the mine engineers and geologist who often do not have the expertise or the time to apply these methods. This paper presents a new 2-step kriging algorithm "Outlier Restricted Kriging" (ORK) which can be a simple and a practical tool to use where the ordinary kriging will fail to handle the outlier high grade data properly in block grade estimation. The paper details the methodology and discusses the results of its application to a gold deposit.

The U. S. Bureau of Mines has been investigating the application of thiosulfate to recover gold directly from low grade refractory carbonaceous ores for the past four years. Statistical experimental methods were used to determine the effects of various leaching parameters on both gold extraction and thiosulfate consumption. Seven variables were investigated, including thiosulfate, copper, ammonia, sulfite, and sulfate concentrations, leaching time, and leaching atmosphere. This information was used in face-centered cubic (FCC) surface response experiments to define the optimum leaching conditions for a low grade ore. Two models were generated from the data to predict gold extraction and thiosulfate consumption as a function of the leaching parameters. The models predicted a gold extraction of 67 pct and reagent consumption of 2 kg [S2032/mt ore at 0.25 M S2032-, 0.0014 M Cu2+, 0.27 M NH,OH, 0.00625 M SO;-,] and leaching for 16 h. Actual tests resulted in 62 pct gold extraction with 0.93 kg S2032- consumed/mt ore. Subsequent column leaching tests have further demonstrated the viability of applying this technology to recover gold from carbonaceous ores without first pretreating the material. Gold extractions in the column tests ranged from 69 to 78 pct with thiosulfate consumption ranging from 0.4 to 5.4 kg/mt ore. These results compare to <5 pct gold extraction using standard cyanide leaching conditions.

Over 95 percent of the world&apos;s refined copper is now produced by electrolytic processes. The bulk of this electrolytic copper comes via the conventional route for sulfide ores of concentration, smelting and electro-refining. A rapidly increasing percentage of world production is now achieved using hydrometallurgical routes involving dissolution of the copper values from minerals, purification of the resultant leach solution by solvent extraction and finally deposition as cathodes by electrowinning. The technology can now be considered mature and this paper endeavors to summarize recent developments which, from the authors&apos; perspectives, are important.

Stability analyses were performed on the La Libertad, Nicaragua existing tailings embankment in order to determine the conditions for the minimum buttressing required for stability of the dam as a short term measure. Two critical sections, shown in Figure 1, were investigated under static, drained and undrained conditions for existing and modified geometries. The existing geometries reflect the "as built" topography of the dam, and the modified geometries reflect the implementation of a toe berm to buttress the slope. For these geometries drained and undrained conditions as well as different elevations of the toe berm were evaluated against a factor of safety.

It has been shown since a few years that the problem of estimating recoverable reserves should be solved by using specialized statistical techniques : whenever the selected blocks are chosen without any other constraint than a cut-off grade criterion, the problem of estimating the corresponding tonnage-grade curve is resolved by estimating the local histogram of block grades. Two major statistical techniques are currently used by geostatisticians to estimate local histograms : the "average conditional distribution" technique (Parker, Journel, Dixon 1979) and the disjunctive kriging technique. (Matheron, 1976, Jackson, Maréchal, 1979). Both have proved to be applicable in practice, with their pros and conconcerning their practibility and versatility.

These changes must be understood and considered in definition of the strategy of the business. Implementation of the strategy must assure commitment from all departments within a company, and this commitment sometimes involves compromises to assure that a department&apos;s goals mesh with the overall business objective such compromises must be externally motivated. i.e. for benefit of the customer. Complete implementation transcends internal departments to all aspects of managing the efforts in the marketplace.

With an ongoing concern for safety and health in the workplace, NYCO® requested three medical evaluations be undertaken to study possible health hazards of wollastonite. Two of the evaluations were conducted by the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). One was in 1976 (Ref. 1), and the second in 1982 (Ref. 2). The aim of the two studies was to answer the following two questions: 1. Do wollastonite workers exhibit more respiratory abnormalities than workers not exposed to wollastonite? 2. Is there a relationship between prevalence of respiratory abnormalities and accumulated expo-sure time to wollastonite?
