The magneto-hydrostatic method can be used today to separate slightly magnetic or non-magnetic particles according to differences in their specific gravities and magnetic susceptibilities. The classical approach is to effect stratification prior to separation. This paper discusses some of the significant parameters which bear on the design and pattern of the expected stratification in the separation cell. As the characteristics of the magnetic field, and consequently those of the magnetic forces, are determined by the geometry of the poles, this subject is treated first. In this context a new approach, whereby the range of stratification is extended, using positive as well as negative gradients, is presented. Finally, the effect of the relative size and shape of the particles on stratification is discussed.

The boron review did not arrive in time for publication in the June issue. The United States was the world's largest producer and consumer of boron compounds during 1992. The US Bureau of Mines estimated that boron mineral concentrate and chemical production in the United States totaled 1Mt (1.1 million st) in 1992, yielding 521 kt (574,000 st) of B203 for a total estimated value of $333 million. That was about 20% less than 1991 revised production figures, and less in value by $107 million. The United States continues to provide essentially all of its own boron supply while maintaining a strong position as a source of sodium borate products and boric acid to foreign markets. Domestic employment in the mining and beneficiation of boron products in 1992 was about 900 people, the same as in 1991. In 1988, 1250 people worked in the boron industry. The Bureau estimated that total world production of boron in 1992 was about 3 Mt (3.3 million st), or about 1.2 Mt (1.3 million st)of B2O3. World production in 1992 was about equal to revised 1991 levels. A resource of low grade good quality diamonds has been discovered through the Diamond Company NL-Moonstone Diamond Corp. Joint Venture. A limited bulk sample diamond test of two large kimberlite pipes on the Kelsey Lake Property, Colorado, has been completed. These kimberlite pipes have petrological and mineralogical indications of the presence of diamond. Small diamonds were recovered from surface samples. Drilling and trenching revealed both pipes were complexes of diatreme facies kimberlite. One pipe contains crater facies kimberlite as well. This is the first reported occurrence of crater facies kimberlite in the Province. Approximately 1000 tonnes of kimberlite rock was excavated and processed through a scrubber -HMS -Sortex -Grease Plant. Significant diamonds were recovered. The diamonds were generally of good color and clarity, with many being in the gem and near gem categories. Grades are considered low however. Additionally, a small potential resource of alluvial diamonds is present.

"The performance of column flotation is strongly influenced by the effectiveness of the gas sparging system. Unfortunately, field studies suggest that gas injector systems used for column sparging are not always optimized. This unfavorable condition can create a number of issues within the concentrator including lower recoveries, poorer metallurgical upgrading, decreased capacities, increased circulating loads, higher reagent consumption and inefficient energy usage. To help overcome these problems, techniques have been developed that can be adopted by plant operators to improve sparger performance. These techniques include (i) design modifications to sparger components such as nozzles, distributors and internal parts and (ii) operational improvements such as proper balancing of gas/water flows, elimination of unnecessary pressure drops, and staged injection of frothing agents. This article reviews the important criteria that govern sparger operation and provides data showing how simple low-cost improvements can positively impact column performance. INTRODUCTION Column flotation cells have become the most popular machine design for industrial applications that require high purity concentrates. The superior metallurgical performance of column cells can be largely attributed to their unique geometry, which readily accommodates the use of froth washing systems. The wash water minimizes the nonselective entrainment of ultrafine gangue minerals that would otherwise be hydraulically carried in the water reporting to the froth concentrate. The larger height-to-diameter ratio of columns allows a deep froth to be maintained, which is essential to achieve even water distribution. Due to these unique features, column cells can provide impressive levels of metallurgical performance closely approaching the ultimate separation curve predicted using the flotation release analysis method (Kohmuench et al., 2007). Another very important feature of column cells is the design of the gas sparging system. One popular choice in the minerals processing industry is the Eriez SlamJet® sparger. As shown in Figure 1, this type of sparger operates by passing compressed gas through a small discharge nozzle. Fluid turbulence created by the exiting gas disperses and distributes small bubbles into the flotation pulp. The sparger is equipped with an internal moveable rod that is attached to a pressure diaphragm in the back housing of the sparger. The internal rod automatically moves back/forward and opens/closes the nozzle outlet when the compressed gas is switched on/off. This patented design effectively eliminates the accidental backflow of flotation pulp into the injection tube during shutdowns. The sparger can be operated as a gas-only injector or with the introduction of a small amount of high-pressure sparger water (Kohmuench et al., 2010)."

This paper will discuss a U.S. Bureau of Mines project designed to assess and predict the impacts which surface coal mining will have on the regional shallow groundwater systems in the Powder River Basin. The primary objective will be met through the accomplishment of the following: (1) The design and establishment of a regional network for monitoring of shallow groundwater systems in the Basin. (2) Monitoring of the direction and rate of flow, water quality, and aquifer characteristics of the shallow groundwater systems. (3) Development of a regional groundwater simulation model with appurtenant subroutines to determine local effects.

A Mark IV surface force apparatus (SF A) was used to conduct direct force measurements in dodecylamine hydrogenchloride collector solution between mica surfaces at varying pHs. It has been found that the long-range hydrophobic forces reach a maximum at pH 9.5, which also corresponds to the maxima attained by the contact angle and flotation recovery of quartz. The charge densities are comparable on both mica and quartz surfaces (0.40-0.48 run2), making it possible to draw conclusions on the flotation of quartz from the direct force measurements conducted on mica. Therefore, it may be suggested that the maximum flotation recovery of quartz m the range of pH 8.0-10.3 may be attributed to the appearance of long-range hydrophobic force, which in turn can be related to the formation of a close-packed monolayer (or hemimicelle) in the presence of neutral amines formed as a result of hydrolysis.

Mining and tunneling in so-called “squeezing ground conditions” at high in-situ stress can result in substantial and enduring ground deformations. The magnitude of deformations is closely tied to the applied excavation- and support concept, though typically, they can reach tens of centimeters. The yielding principle is based on the idea, that the need for support capacity decreases as deformation increases. To enable controlled ground deformation and safe working conditions, yielding elements as a part of the shotcrete lining are implemented. These types of elements avoid an overstressing of the shotcrete lining. During the deformation process, the support pressure of the yielding elements and lining increases, thus stabilizing the ground. Furthermore, long-term creep deformations of the rock mass can be absorbed with such a system. This economic support technique represents the state-of-the-art infrastructure tunneling practice in squeezing ground condition. A novel yielding element of High-Strength Expanded Polystyrene (HS-EPS) was invented, which overcomes existing systems’ drawbacks. This innovative system is lightweight and allows for safe and rapid installation. Furthermore, the modular setup of the element enables an easy on-site adaption to react to in-situ deformation patterns and changing ground conditions. Recent experiences from applications in Alpine base tunnels in squeezing ground are presented.

This paper describes two-lane dual motorway tunnels under construction in Bergen. The tunnels are part of a by-pass motorway system throuth the most congested area of the city of Bergen. The tunnels are unique due to their length, heavy traffic, longitudinal ventilation system and the use of a tunnel boring machine, or "TBM", to excavate through hard rock. The tunnels are being built by The Norwegian Public Road Administration and the TBM was delivered by the Robbins Company. The diameter of the TBM is 7.8 m and the tunnel profile is cut by conventional drill and blasting methods in the tunnel's lower half to attain a two lane motorway tunnel. This paper also describes proposed fjord crossings along the Norwegian west coast where the TBM may be used due to its great advantages in comparison to conventional drill and blasting methods.

"In our work, the preparation technique of high pure manganese sulfate directly from low-grade rhodochrosite ore (MnCO3) was studied and improved intensively, including the effective leaching process and the short purifying process. Based on the same ion effect, the repeated leaching of rhodochrosite with sulfuric acid is proposed to improve the solubility of Mn2+ and inhibit the dissolution of the impurities Ca2+ and Mg2+. Moreover, the repeated leaching process could make full use of rhodochrosite and lower the dosage of sulfuric acidas raw material. With the aid of theoretical calculation, Ba(OH)2 was chose to adjust the pH value of manganese sulfate solution, and BaF2 to remove Ca2+ and Mg2+completely in the process of purifying. The results demonstrate that the extraction ratio and the recovery ratio of manganese reached 94.3% and 92.7%, respectively, which shows the prospect of industrial application. In manganese sulfate production, the heavy metal impurities have been decreased to less than 1ppm. Moreover, the content of calcium, magnesium and sodium has been decreased to less than 20ppm, which meets the standards of high pure reagent for energy and electronic materials. Our study enlightens an approach to the sustainable application of low-grade rhodochrosite.Introduction Low-grade manganese carbonate ores (=14%) becomes gradually the main resources for exploitation and applications in China according to national mineral resources survey (Tan et al 2004 and Singh et al 2017). Therefore, the electrolytic deposition technique of rhodochrosite faces great challenges including low electrolysis efficiency, high-resource input and high-pollution discharge (Fu et al 2010, Michelis et al 2009, Zhang et al 2013). Recently, more and more amount of manganese series with high or super high purity such as MnSO4, MnO2, Mn3O4 and MnO is demanded with the development of energy and electronic materials. Due to low-grade ores containing multiple elements such as iron, silicon, calcium and magnesium, conventional preparation of manganese sulphate with high purity from electrolytic product is characterized by long production-cycle and high-energy consumption (Subrat et al 2011, Mpho et al 2013). By contrast, hydrometallurgical method combined with thermal decomposition, hydrothermal synthesis and sol-gel processes has been widely studied because of its high efficiency, low consumption and low cost (Chen et al 2008). But the key problem in direct preparation of manganese series form low-grade rhodochrosite is to remove completely the multiple impurities such as iron, silicon, calcium and magnesium (Liu et al 2014). So it is urgent to develop a sustainable alternative approach with character of short process, high efficiency and environmental friendly."

"STATE OF THE ART The current situation of ground prediction in TBM is of great concern for tunnelling contractors, and the subject has been quite widely addressed over recent years, for instance by the French Eupalinos 2000 programme, which tested a variety of technological approaches. A number of interesting projects were executed, such as the SOUND and OnSITE projects, part of the German Geotechnologien programme: these projects are focused on seismics, while other techniques such as radar are not considered. Little information and even less industrial applications have been released apart from lab simulations and numerical modelling. A number of field tests in different configurations have been carried out for compression waves, but the results were often not reliable or convincing, and therefore little has been reported in open literature. The advances seem somewhat promising as far as hard rock tunnels are concerned, but ignore the problem raised by concrete lined tunnels such as those bored by a TBM in soft ground. In such tunnels, sending and receiving seismic waves reliably through the lining (and the grouting behind) is quite illusory. A careful analysis of the seismic prediction research results show that the main problem is the source which is poorly controlled and poorly coupled (for instance in concrete lined tunnels, or in approaches that use the TBM cutter head vibrations as a source). Generating waves perpendicular to the tunnel axis is also a problem: aligning with the tunnel axis makes more sense. Radar (Ground Penetrating Radar - GPR) has been used in geotechnical surveys for decades, and also for tunnel inspection. Attempts have been made at using it on a TBM (for example in Japan by Taisei) but mainly using off-the-shelf GPRs, which are not adapted to work in the specific environment of a TBM (because of its huge mass of metal, to start with). Very few results have been published, probably due to the somewhat disappointing performance of such implementations. At present, no TBM has a GPR incorporated in its cutter head that is able to predict ground characteristics while drilling. Another characteristic and drawback of most current methods is that they require dedicated periods of time during which other tunnel construction activities must be stopped. Due to the duration of such operations this leads to performing ground prediction on a weekly basis only, and therefore to a requirement for an investigation range of 100 metres approximately (in order to cover the TBM advance over the coming week). This is not achievable with boreholes made from the TBM, even less if a reasonable accuracy is required, as is usually the case."

In less than two years, Stratmin has discovered, explored, developed, financed and put into production by open pit, a large graphite mine. The deposit, hinted by airborne electromagnetic survey, was discovered in September 1987 through various ground geophysical surveys, diamond drilling and trenching. The open pit started production in February 1989, feeding a nearby leased mill at Notre-Dame-du-Laus (Quebec), having a processing capacity of 400 tons per day. A new 1,000 tonne per day mill was built at the mine site, in Lac-des-lies (Quebec) and began production in April 1990. The Lac-des-lies graphite operation is currently one of the largest of its kind in the world. Mine and mill facilities are operated by Stratmin Graphite, jointly owned by Stratmin Inc. (75%) and Imetal-France (25%), a wholly owned subsidiary of Imetal (France). From initial exports limited to Japan and United States, Stratmin Graphite is now exporting in fourteen different countries, attesting to the very high quality of its products, with grades ranging from 92% to 97% carbon. Among the numerous graphite deposits discovered in Canada, Stratmin Graphite Inc. has emerged as the leader and virtually the sole crystalline graphite producer in North America, operating on a continuous basis.

The recovery of P2O5 from a 90-95% minus 45 microns phosphate slimes sample was carried out in a 5.08-cm internal diameter and 549-cm high flotation column cell. The influence of the feed rate, feed percent (%) solids, and frother dosage on the recovery was investigated following a truncated cubic 3 level by 3 variables experimental design. Two three-variable interactions of feed rate (-l)/feed percent solids (+l)/frother dosage (-1) and feed rate (-l)/feed percent solids (-1)/ frother dosage (+I) gave the region of optimum column performance: recovery (52.60-74.50%), mass yield (15.68-18.80%), and concentrate grade (22.87-31.2196). The collector dosage also showed a significant influence on the column performance. The high reagent consumption relative to the current plant levels points to the need for the removal of ultrafine particles (<10 µm).

Excessive emissions of methane from the coal seams can have a serious adverse effect on both safety and productivity of longwall coal faces. Mechanization of coal faces has increased production possibilities to the extent that normal ventilation systems may not be able to ventilate coal face areas in order to lower methane content in the air to within legal limits. Production increases may therefore be prohibited for this reason, especially in gassy seams. Methane drainage from the coal seam by means of long holes and before production starts can act as a useful remedial action. In this paper a two dimensional mathematical model has been produced. The model that is based on finite elements, simulates a methane drainage system where the resultant risk is linked to the coefficient of diffusion, coal permeability, holes pattern and the duration for which the seam is subject to drainage. It is concluded that methane drainage of this type can assist in achieving production increases in many coals seems, especially where high gas content is a virtue of the seam.

The 1987 recovery in the US mining industry permitted modest increases in exploration expenditures that year (Fig. 1). Favorable market conditions apparently allowed the gains to be sus¬tained in 1988. There was great uncer¬tainty early in the year as to whether world and US economic growth would be a casualty of the October 1987 worldwide stock market crash. By nearly all measures, the performance of the US minerals industry was strong¬. A weak US dollar and the strong growth of worldwide capital spending resulted in in¬creased US exports of con¬sumer and producer durable items as well as strong domes¬tic demand for metals. In fact, 1988 US steel industry exports reached levels not attained since the mid-1970s. It was re¬ported that steel industry labor productivity is now roughly twice the 1981 level. Among metals with signifi¬cant average nominal price increases in 1988 over 1987 levels were copper (43%), alu¬minum (52%0), and zinc (44%). Even though domestic copper production has grown since 1984 by 30% in mining and 24% in refining, em¬ployment in mining and milling is 4% below the 1984 level. Domestic unit costs are reported in the range of $1.10 to $1.33/kg (50 to 60 cents per lb). The US base metals industry is proba¬bly in its best cash position in many years. However, there has not been a large increase in exploration expendi¬tures. This is due mostly to the percep¬tion that worldwide capacity can easily be increased. Industry reports do show that "low cost" copper producers have been buying reserves from weaker com¬panies. The 1987 Society of Economic Ge¬ologists (SEG) survey of exploration activity indicated that 95 cents out of every exploration dollar spent by US and Canadian firms was for base and precious metals (Economic Geology, January 1989). Press reports, though, make it clear that most of that spending was targeted for precious metals. US claim staking data (Fig. 2) rein¬forces this suspicion. The apparent lag in new claim filings in Alaska and phe¬nomenal growth in filings in the lower 48 states suggests that exploration is directed at relatively low risk targets. In the conterminous 48, more than 40% of the new claims were made in Nevada, indicating an emphasis on gold (although even Nevada had some base metals exploration). Even with a price decline during 1988, the difference between the gold price and average global "cash" production cost of $7.30/g ($227 per oz) still leaves room for an attractive return (Northern Miner, 1988). Exploration plans and results Metals Economics Group (Halifax) indicated in its 1988 exploration survey that exploration expenditures by US and South African firms would be at about 1987 levels. It also reported that Canadian and Australian firms were ex¬pected to reduce their exploration spend¬ing significantly. Firms in both coun¬tries were caught in changes in tax laws. In Canada, the Mining Ex¬ploration Depletion Allow¬ance (MEDA) once permitted generous tax write-offs to in¬dividuals investing in miner¬als exploration. It was to be replaced in January 1989 with the Canadian Exploration In¬centives Program (CEIP). Although structured and ad¬ministered differently than MEDA, CEIP can provide an equivalent or possibly greater financial incentive for min¬eral exploration, for junior mining companies. In 1987, it is estimated that junior com¬panies accounted for two¬-thirds of the off-property (or grass roots) exploration ex¬penditures in Canada. Australia will revoke the tax exemption for gold in 1990. Australian operators, therfore, were expected to concentrate efforts on speeding up pro¬duction during 1988 and 1989. In 1988, Chile and Mali announced special efforts to attract gold explora¬tion by foreign companies. The Cana¬dian government continues to express concern about the write-off (and drawdown) of base metal reserves. PROPERTY AND PRODUCTION: Around 100 Million Tons of Recoverable Coal are available from the approximate 10,000 acres allocated to the mine. Over 1300 acres of surface land holdings extend well beyond the limits required for plant site, storage tracks, water supply reservoir, settling ponds and waste disposal. COAL: Extensive core drilled testing confirmed the early indicated high quality of the #6 Seam Washability data show less than four percent of the&apos; coal seam required removal to provide a superior product for the available market. PREPARATION PANT DESIGN: The limited needs enabled Preparation Plant Design to meet the requirements without inclusion of novel equipment. The simplified needs afforded ample opportunity for considering increased automation where advantage or economy was antioipated. Plant design included protection of opportunity for pre-drying in advance of air cleaning the fine coal and accommodations for addition of Dense Media separating equipment in event warranted or required by future market changes. Protection is also afforded for addition of Raw Coal Storage accommodations in event warranted. Figure I shows the Preparation Plant Flow Sheet.

Often geometallurgical models are prepared at various project stages from very few data and are assumed to be representative of very large tonnages. These may include recovery models; crushing and grinding parameters and models; models of concentrate grades; models of acid consumption; etc. These models commonly do not carry a measure of uncertainty or variability, and are taken at face value at the time of design and planning. This paper proposes a proactive approach to modelling variability, providing uncertainty estimates and thus allowing for risk analysis and mitigation of geometallurgical models. The variability model is built up by understanding the limitations of the pillars of a geometallurgical model: data uncertainty; geologic model uncertainty; domain definition uncertainty; and parameter estimation uncertainty. Of these factors, typically domain definition is the most significant contributor to geometallurgical model variability. First, the fundamental supports for these models are briefly discussed, with domain definition emphasized. Second, two methods for uncertainty modelling are proposed. The first, more applicable to conceptual or early-stage projects, is a simpler and more expedient alternative that provides initial assessments of variability. This is intended to aid management in decision-making related to budgeting, including further sampling and testing. The second, a block-by-block approach that allows a detailed assessment of risk for specific designs and mine plans, thus providing further opportunities for mitigation. In the example provided, emphasis is placed in communicating this variability to both management and technical personnel in the form of “measured-indicated-inferred” indicators and also block-by-block confidence intervals.

In the estimation of recoverable resources, geostatistical techniques such as Multiple Indicator Kriging require a change of support correction to derive theoretical recoveries based on an assumed level of mining selectivity. The change of support models most widely used in practice entail model based generalized corrections either on a global or local basis. Examples include the affine and indirect lognormal methods. Change of support corrections derived empirically through short-scale conditional simulation realizations often show notable differences compared with theoretical corrections determined using model variogram parameters. The existing changes of support models are reviewed and an alternative method is proposed.

Reduction bleaching is used to improve the brightness and color of the kaolin pigments sold to the paper and speciality industries. The bleach re¬duces the iron oxide associated with kaolin deposits to a colorless form by the following reaction: Na2S2O42+ 6Fe+3 + 4 H2O -> 2 NaHSO4 + 6Fe+2 + 6H+ (Conley et al., 1964). At present, sodium hydrosulfite is used by the kaolin industry as the reductive bleach. It is often purchased commercially as a liquid solution and added into an acidified slurry. Before the use of commercial sodium hydrosulfite, kaolin plants manufactured zinc hydrosulfite on site by adding zinc dust to sulfurous acid made by passing SO2 gas into water. This process was abandoned in the 1970s due to environmental concerns about zinc in waste waters. In the 1970s, Engelhard patented a process that made sodium hydrosulfate from an iron hydrosulfate (Tiethof, 1978). Difficulties with separating the iron hydroxide byproduct from the bleach and a decrease in the cost of commercial bleach caused the project to be abandoned.

Complex sulphide ores usually require very fine grinding of the whole ore stream to achieve adequate liberation. Recent improvements to DSM screens have made this device appear competitive with cyclones in circuits treating these ores. A DSM screen and cyclones were tested in pilot-scale grinding of a copper, lead, zinc ore and the resultant data were used to establish a multi-component simulation model. The model was used to assess the influences of mill environment, circuit flows and pulp densities, final product properties (size, relative size and SG of the values, and liberation characteristics) and a second grinding circuit on capacity and product size distributions, and hence define conditions for which one device is better than the other.
