Many investigators believe that column flotation cells offer significant advantages over standard mechanical machines for the flotation of fine particles. However, because of their unique design and operation, conventional techniques for flotation cell scale-up and design cannot be applied to columns. In an attempt to help alleviate this problems a population balance model based on first principles has been developed for fine particle flotation in a column. Two different terms have been considered in the model, i.e., transport and rate. Transport terms, incorporating fluid flow and bouyancy, are used to describe the movement of air bubbles, unattached particles and bubble-particle aggregates along the length of the column. Rate terms, which describe the bubble-particle attachment process, have been derived from first principle considerations. Because the model is based on first principles, it can be useful for the design, control, optimization and scale-up of column flotation cells.

It seems appropriate to review the history of mechanization of our underground coal mines at this time when many favorable flags are flying for this industry. It is a reasonable hope that such a review may stimulate thinking as to the directions that new technological developments are apt to take and in which members of the Society of Mining Engineers are destined to play important roles. Discussion of the relative importance of the various changes that have taken place since the advent of electric power provides the starting point. It is in the economic factors utilized that we find conditions which permit more efficient utilization of the capital committed to the industry. Concepts rather than specific items are emphasized in the following discussion because once the value of a concept, such as mechanical conveyors, is established, it then spawns many variations which are not significantly different. The shift from animate to inanimate energy has been the most important change in the modern industrial scene, including coal mining. Although introduced into coal mines for some purposes early in the period of general electrification, the coal industry adopted mechanical power relatively slowly, and 1944 was the first year in which a majority of deep-mined coal was mechanically loaded.

A coupled finite element geomechanical- hydrology code is currently under development for application to the problem of predicting groundwater disturbances associated with mine subsidence. The structural-fluid coupling is addressed by calculating the subsided mine geometry, with emphasis placed on determining the strata disturbance and locating damaged regions, for input into a hydrology code, which determines localized volume flow rates and aquifer fluctuations. Benefits from coupling will be best realized when field measurements, an additional aspect of the study concurrent with analytical investigations, indicating the relationship between increasing rock strain and increasing permeability are incorporated into hydraulic material descriptions. Hydrologic and struc- tural calculations are presented to demonstrate computational capabilities applicable to mine subsidence

The accumulation, handling, and utilization of sludges formed from wet process phosphoric acid is one of the major problems in the industry. The purpose of this paper is to explain some of the considerations and techniques that can be employed to provide some measure of control over the problem. An acid made from a Central Florida phosphate rock is used to illustrate the effects of one process design approach used to provide one type of control. Other approaches or techniques are discussed on a general basis. In every case, the discussion is purposely limited to conventional dihydrate processing in which phosphoric acid is produced from the filter at a strength of approximately 30% P205 and is subsequently concentrated to higher strengths such as 44 and 54% P205.

This paper deals with problems of groundwater development in an insular circum-Pacific environment, and is not oriented as such to mining and mineral development. Nonetheless, because a reliable water supply is necessary for most mining and related support activities, and since water supplies are limited in many insular parts of the Pacific Basin, groundwater development is a subject which must be frequently addressed. Because many in the audience may be already familiar with groundwater development for continental environments, I have chosen to deal with groundwater occurrence and development problems which for the most part are unique to insular environments. In such environments, the local geology plays a critical role in determining groundwater occurrence and its suitability for development. The three examples discussed in this paper-Hawaii, Guam, and the Marshall Islands-were selected because they illustrate groundwater occurrence in a wide range of geologic conditions. For example, the Hawaiian aquifers consist primarily of basaltic lavas, while Guam is made up of andesitic lavas and coral reef limestones, and the Marshall Islands are coral atoll deposits. Despite differences in aquifer size and rock types, the principal mode of groundwater occurrence at the three sites is similar; thus, development strategies are also similar. Figure 1 shows the location of the three sites.

"As underground mining continues to operate at deeper depths and in more complex geologic and geometric conditions, there has been an increased demand for mine designs to better reflect site-specific conditions, measurements, and observations with respect to ground control safety and stability. During the past 20 years, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has developed, validated and distributed a number of free software packages (ALPS, ARMPS, AMSS, ARBS, etc.) specifically aimed at providing the industry with ground control design tools for the evaluation of underground stability in coal mines. While these programs were initially developed as stand-alone software packages where all data reside on an individual or workgroup computer, modern day web applications have begun to migrate toward a “multiple-tier” architecture, allowing multiple users to access an application by means of an Internet connection.This article introduces a new Web-based platform for ground control software applications, webGroundControl (webGC). webGC provides users with a platform through which one can access NIOSH and other ground control design software utilizing a Webbased, multiple-tier architecture. This provides users with easy access to ground control designs, the ability to perform on-demand calculations, as well as increase online collaboration between operational personnel and engineers through a web server. The basic framework and, more specifically, the user-interface of webGC are defined and outlined within this paper. It is expected that the mining industry will rapidly embrace this new product and webGroundControl will be a new paradigm for mining engineering computer applications. Platform architectureAs Web-based computing technologies continue to advance and cloud computing gains momentum, web-based platforms for software applications are growing in popularity across all industries due to ease of product accessibility and distribution as well as data security. With the expansion of Internet connectivity on the surface and underground, there is an industry need to develop Internet-based applications for mine and ground control design (Barczak et al., 2016). Cloud-based products are already available for many industries and are slowly being developed for the mining and geotechnical industry. A notable example is the drillysis package, which is a cloud-based borehole logging database (Geosysta, 2017) or the Dynonobel package for on the fly blasting calculations (Dyno Nobel, 2013)."

During the last decade various modifications of room and pillar and sub-level methods have been tried in an effort to eliminate gob-fires, dangers from roof falls, surface subsidence and to increase efficiency of extraction in the Armutcuk Mine, Turkey. It was eventually decided that the most likely system to give maximum benefits in view of existing geological conditions and coal seam characteristics was a system of cut-and-fill stoping employing hydraulic stowing. This paper has attempted to examine the trends of working techniques of hydraulic stowing. In addition, the results achieved and technical problems involved are discussed.

Colony Development Operation is a joint venture currently consisting of four active members; The Oil Shale Corporation (TOSCO); Ashland Oil Inc.; Shell Oil Company and Atlantic Richfield Company, operator of the project. The initial efforts on the Colony project began in the spring of 1965. Pilot mining and semi-works engineering programs continued, in phases, to completion in the fall of 1972 when commercialization of oil shale was deemed realistic. Since that time, Colony efforts have been directed toward evaluation of the data collected during the semi-works operation and in designing a commercial operation. In October of 1974, Colony announced: "because of economic and national energy policy uncertainties it was suspending plans to start construction of a commercial oil shale plant on private lands in northwestern Colorado, scheduled for spring of 1975."

In the late 1940's and early 50's in southern Illinois, the usual open pit blasting in the coal field consisted of one or two rows of churn drilled vertical holes being shot with instant electric blasting caps. The entire shot detonated at one rime. In southern Indiana and Ohio most mines were drilling horizontal holes and they too were primed with instant EB caps. During the ten years from 1355 through 1965 many changes occurred in drilling and blasting methods. The churn drill in southern Illinois and the horizontal drill in Indiana and Ohio were replaced by the rotary vertical drill. The ammonia dynamites and liquid oxygen explosives were replaced by ANFO. The elctric blasting cap in the hole was replaced by a detonating cord down line and detonating cord trunk lines made the connections between holes and rows of holes. Host open pit mining was in areas far enough from town that the noise and vibration from blasting was, if not ignored, at least tolerated. During the 1960's open pit mining expanded to account for nearly 50% of the coal produced. Mines came closer to town and towns expanded along the highways with suburban homes and mobile homes. The mines began receiving complaints about the noise and vibrations from blasting operations.

The Mississippi embayment ball clay region, including western Kentucky, western Tennessee, and northwestern Mississippi, accounted for more than 95% of the total U.S. ball clay production during 1985. Other producing states during the year were Texas and Maryland. The U.S. Bureau of Mines reported total domestic production for 1985 of 910,000 short tons. The United States exports approximately 20% of the annual ball clay production. Geologically, the ball clay deposits are sedimentary in origin and occupy the north- eastern flank of the Mississippi embayment. The commercial deposits have been confined to the Claiborne and Wilcox formations within mid to lower Eocene and upper Paleocene age strata. The deposits are lenticular in nature and highly variable in areal extent and thickness. They exhibit very abrupt lateral boundaries and are bounded laterally and vertically by unconsolidated sands, silts, and waste clays.

INTRODUCTION The past decade has witnessed a literal explosion in formal modeling of energy systems and markets. This rapid development was stimulated primarily by policy issues arising from the energy price shocks of 1973- 1974 and 1979- 1980. The suddenness of this interest is illustrated by comparing the current and earlier editions of Mineral Economics. The third edition, published in 1976, includes an addendum to the section of projection and forecasting methods because, Since the foregoing chapter was written, major events in petroleum have caused an explosion in formal modeling efforts in the energy field.a In contrast, this fourth edition includes the present chapter on energy modeling, and a separate chapter on nonfuel minerals modeling. The considerable interest in formal energy models is based on the complexity of the system, in particular the interaction between technical and engineering data and designs, and economic behavior of energy producers and users. Energy is a vital component in the economic and social well-being of nations, and must increasingly be explicitly considered in developing economic growth and welfare policies. Energy models can contribute to policy development and analysis, both by improved understanding of the energy system, and of the interaction between energy markets and the economy, and as an explicit means of analyzing and comparing the implications of alternative policy actions. At their best, formal models can clarify and illuminate policy options. In this chapter we will survey the objectives, methods, and potential contributions and limitations of energy system modeling. Section 2 considers the objectives, scope, and approaches to energy system and market modeling. Methodological approaches are then discussed more formally in section 3. Our approach is to intro- duce each model type and method via relatively simple generic models, illustrating their use by a selective review of the applications literature. Section 4 shifts the focus from modeling methods to procedures for model evaluation and improving model credibility especially in policy research and analysis. We conclude with some brief remarks on directions and opportunities for future modeling research. ENERGY MODELS: OBJECTIVES, SCOPE AND APPROACHES The concept of a model usually evokes an image of a complex, computerized system of mathematical or econometric equations providing detailed information concerning the operation of the process being modeled. In fact. models may be simple or complex, formal or mental, depending upon the purposes for which the model is intended. It does not take sophisticated economic analysis to determine the current status of nickel production and demand (Figure 1). One only needs a quick glance at the balance sheets of the major nickel producers to learn that prices are down and profits are supressed to the point where they are major losses. Operations have been closed, and those remaining in production have reduced output. What Is now of interest Is, when will the nickel market improve and to what degree? The purpose of this paper is to attempt to answer these questions. This will be done by the normal method of projecting nickel demand, chosing a production scenario, and analyzing the results.

Reflections on over ten years experience handling bituminous coal from railroad cars to ground storage and lake vessels. The arrangement of the facilities is described but the basic theme of the discussion is the experience gained and lessons learned from facility operation. The Great Lakes provide the maritime environment for the economical transport of vast quantities of raw materials from their source in the Upper Lakes (the Mesabi Range, for instance) to Lower Lake Ports. Lake Erie, because of its proximity to the steel centers , blossomed with the great ports that now line its southern shore - Toledo, Sandusky, Lorain, Cleveland, Huron, Ashtabula, Conneaut and Erie.

[One of the major problems in the purchase and sale of coal shipped in lake or ocean going vessels has always been the difficulty in obtaining a true analysis of the shipped coal?s quality because of faulty sampling by manual methods. As long as coal was sampled according to standards set up by ASTM methods designated D 492-48 there generally were no quarrels with the results obtained. However, due to varied weather conditions and because of the large number of cars sampled, there is no assurance that prescribed manual methods of sampling will always be followed. Because of this problem, the organization previously called American Coal Sales Association, now part of the National Coal Association, set up a committee compose of representatives from coal producers, coal shippers and coal consumers to study this sampling problem and to devise, if possible, a means of sampling on the high lift dumpers which could be automated so that a; true sample of the coal as loaded in the railroad car could be obtained.]

While flue gas scrubbing with alkaline solutions is one of the oldest methods of removing SO2 from flue gas, a satisfactory scrubbing system for this application, which is both technically and economically viable, has yet to be developed. Interest in alkaline scrubbing has continued because of its basic simplicity and comparatively low capital cost. Drawbacks of alkaline scrubbing are the tendency for accumulation of solids to plug the system, scaling, corrosion and erosion problems and the need to dispose of large quantities of waste. Discussed are instrumentation loop applications to a 90,000 cfm alkali scrubbing test facility, the process problems the instrumentation engineer faces in. selection of equipment, the performance of the instruments selected and the problems encountered during start-up. The Test Facility incorporates centralized electronic process control with a digital data acquisition system provided to log process variables and print off normal (alarm) conditions. Flue gas SO2 content is measured by ultra-violet analyzers and analysis of the total gas stream is by gas chromatographs.

I also have a very close friend and fraternity brother who works and lives in Denver so I could talk on and on about this area and our western coal properties, but it's Massey's coal terminal business I'm to focus in on today, and that's a horse of a different color. The methyl stretching vibrations for a series of normal and iso xanthates were determined using an infrared spectrophotometer, and the results were compared with the published information on the corresponding alcohols. The frequency shifts of methyl stretching vibrations may be attributed to the inductive effect of polar groups. The hydrogens in the shorter chain alkyl groups are somewhat polar and can be expected to interact with water molecules by hydrogen bonding. Contact angle, surface tension lowering, and solubility appear to be related to the induced polarity of the alkyl groups.

Applications of mathematical statistics to the field of exploration are still relatively new. There are two primary reasons why little has been published in this field. First, if one discovers an effective technique for exploration, he does not like to disclose it. Second, the geologist needs to work closely with a mathematical statistician, and the communications barrier between the disciplines is formidable. The authors of this paper, one a geologist and the other a statistician, were interested in the economic benefit which appeared to be possible in the interdisciplinary area which they have called "geostatistics." An actual example has been selected to illustrate this benefit.
