The scrutiny given to model predictions of pit-lake water quality has focused attention on the uncertainty associated with long-term predictions. Although comparison of probabilistic predictive modeling of water quality in existing pit lakes suggest that short-term predictions can bracket most parameters, un¬certainties in wall-rock reactions and the stability of groundwater composition and climate remain unquantified This overview of the uncertainties associated with longer-term predictions is presented as support for those considering policy decisions that must be made in the absence of reliable estimates of future conditions.

The depletion of high grade siliceous phosphate ores is bringing about a search for economically processable replacements. The processing of unexploited dolomitic sedimentary phosphate reserves has numerous problems including the similar surface properties of the carbonate and phosphate minerals and the presence of significant concentrations of dissolved species in the flotation pulp. In this paper, inorganic adsorption and surface transformation phenomena exhibited by the dolomite/apatite systems are examined in detail. Electrokinetic, adsorption, and flotation results indicate that when placed in a common solution, these two minerals interact significantly, with a corresponding strong influence on flotation using a physisorbed collector. Such behavior can have strong implications for flotation plant practice.

Introduction Very little attention normally is given by the experts, or the public at large, to the fact that the majority of the oil that has been or will be discovered within the U.S. remains in the ground. The inherent limitations of oil production through surface wells, either by primary or secondary techniques, will result in a total of over 300 billion bbl of oil left in the ground after completing production by standard petroleum techniques in currently producing or producible fields. This reserve represents some two-thirds of the original quantity of oil discovered in place. Recent work by a number of groups has shown that there is strong economic justification for extracting this remaining oil by mining and processing techniques. Table 1, taken from 1977 API reports, demonstrates the oil left in place at the end of the conventional petroleum production cycle in then-known fields within th’e U.S. Possible targets for oil mining operations include (1) oil remaining in place in fields and pools that have reached economic depletion by current petroleum production methods and that are not amenable to economic recovery by conventional petroleum industry techniques; (2) oilor bitumen-saturated rocks not normally considered by the industry to constitute producible reservoirs, such as shales and diatomites; and (3) asphalt- and bitumen-impregnated rocks. Economically Depleted Fields A more detailed examination of the depleted fields shows that estimates of oil remaining in place after primary, secondary, and nondestructive tertiary recovery can vary widely. There is significant evidence, however, that more than half the estimated original oil in place (OOIP) remains in the reservoir after all petroleum extraction techniques have been applied. If one compares the sum of past oil production and estimated remaining producible reserves with the API estimate of total discovered OOIP as of 1975, it becomes apparent that for the U.S. as a whole, 67070of the 00IP will remain in place at the end of the

Micron-sized gold disseminated in lower Cambrian siltstone has been found at the Sterling mine near Beatty, NV. A shoestring-shaped body has been developed by central and fringe drifts and is being mined via a modified retreat room and pillar system. The siliceous ore crushed to 5.08 cm (2 in ) is stacked to 4.6 m (15 ft) over a layered sand, gravel, and impervious PVC base. Gold is leached using a 0.1% cyanide solution and deposited on activated coconut shell carbon. Stripping of the carbon by hot solutions of 1% NaOH and 20% Ethanol yields overall recovery of about 75% of the fire assay head.

INTRODUCTION Morro do Niquel is located near the small town of Pratdáolis in the southwest part of the State of Minas Gerais, Brazil, about 300 km in a straight line north of São Paulo and 300 krn west of Belo Horizonte. The deposit is known since 1935. Systematic exploration started, however, only in 1957 and production with one furnace in 1962. Since 1969, after the installation of a second furnace, the mine produces about 2 500 tons of nickel, contained in ferronickel, per year. This production is now consumed totally by the Brazilian steel industry. The "Morro do Niquel" is a serpentinite stock of 900 by 400 m which rises 200 m high above the surrounding metamorphic rocks of Algokian age (see Figure 1). On top of the hill there is a leached barren zone of about 200 by 400 m, generally 20-30 m deep, which consists practically only of a boxwork of quartz colored brown by limonite. Surrounding this zone on the sides of the hill is weathered, decomposed serpentinite which contains about 213 of the economic nickel mineralization. Roughly 113 of the ore reserves lie below the leached overburden representing ore of a different type. The geological map and cross-section, Figure 2, give a clear picture of the occurrence.

As mining fronts converge in sill pillar extraction, the mine seismic hazard can be significantly altered and large seismic events have been known to occur. This study used common seismological tools to analyze the extraction of highly stressed sills from two deep Canadian mines with the objective of characterizing the rock mass failure process and relation to large seismic events. The approach treated a sill pillar as a mine-scale failure process, meaning the temporal and spatial analysis scales needed to exist on a similar scale to a significant part of the mine. The temporal analysis scale overlapped with the entire mining sequence, included several years of data to establish long term change in the characteristics of rock mass failure. The spatial analysis scale included the rock mass surrounding a large part of the convergent mining sequence. To accommodate the large spatial and temporal scales, the highest magnitude 2% of events in the dataset were analyzed. Similar results were shown for sill pillars in both mines. Changes in event location, time, magnitude, energy index and apparent volume were similar to expected behavior of rock failure. Indications of strain hardening and strain softening were observed in the sills. The hardening period was characterized by a high rate of small events, high energy index and low apparent volume, giving an indication of high stress and low rock yield. The softening phase was characterized by a decrease in the rate of small events concurrent with an increase in the rate of large events, low energy index and high apparent volume, indicative of release of stress and increase in deformation. Large magnitude seismicity was strongly related to the softening phase, with several Nuttli magnitude 3.0+ events occurring shortly after the transition from hardening to softening failure regimes. Sill failure was indicated by consistently low EI and low levels of seismicity and seismic hazard in the sill pillar.

In several sections of the country new demands are being brought bar cement users. Among these the demand' for truck shipments; and palletized loads present new problems that do not lend themselves to sample solution. In fact these demands have far-reaching effect in the way bagged cement might be marketed. Early solutions of palletized truck loads filled from existing packing and loading facilities have resulted in' slowdown in packing, additional labor and space for palletizing, considerable experimentation in type and construction of pallets, and usually far from optimum truck handling and loading methods.

Luscar Ltd. is currently developing open pit mining plans for the Telkwa Coal Project. Most waste rock is predicted to be non-acid generating but a proportion (less than 20%) is potentially acid generating. The waste management plan includes in-pit and ex-pit disposal of blended and till-capped waste rock, segregation and in-pit encapsulation of strongly potentially acid generating materials, and in-pit underwater disposal of coarse and fine tailings. The paper will present the steps used to design the waste management plan including the development of geochemical design criteria using various tests and theoretical and practical knowledge of waste behaviour.

This paper is a summary of the author's industrial experiences on the selection and optimization of flotation reagent schemes for the recovery of gold species. The trends given are a composite of data and experiences gained on 24 different gold ores from around the globe. The primary emphasis is on the benefits of matching the associated gold mineralogy to a reagent scheme most appropriate for that mineralogy. Two general categories are discussed: the flotation of free or native gold species and the flotation of gold associated with a variety of sulfide minerals. Important plant operating factors influencing each of these two categories are presented with supporting examples. Carefully matching reagent chemistry and appropriate operating conditions to any given gold-bearing ore will not only lower the total reagent cost but, more importantly, can lead to measurable increases in gold recovery.

The paper is divided into two parts. The first part describes an investigation of the effect of temperature on the conditioning and flotation of an ilmenite ore with a 1:l oleic acid-fuel oil mixture as collector. During conditioning the pulp underwent characteristic changes of flocculation, deflocculation and dispersion which were monitored by measuring the power consumption of the conditioner motor. Optimum flotation results were obtained at the end of the deflocculation period. High ilmenite recoveries were obtained at high temperatures and high concentrate grades at low temperatures. The second part of the paper describes a study of the effect of temperature on the adsorption of oleic acid at the ilmenite/water interface. At high adsorption densities it was chemical and exothermic. Contact angles showed that the hydrophobicity of the collector-coated minerals increased with an increase in temperature.

A potentially cost effective technique for the reclamation of heavy metal contaminated soils and sediments involves the technique of froth flotation. Heavy metals sorbed to clays in the soil may be sulfidized by the introduction of sodium sulfide and floated using a dithiophosphate collector. Separations were obtained where up to 78% of all copper ion was removed from the system. Selected samples were floated in a column cell but little advantage was seen.

An operational 9 meter (30-foot) high gold heap leach pile was investigated by excavating test pits up to 6 meters (20 feet) deep, obtaining bulk and relatively undisturbed thin wall drive samples, and observing the ore distribution patterns exposed in the test pit walls. The clayey ore is crushed, agglomerated with lime and cement, and deposited on the leach pads using a radial stacker. Laboratory tests performed included moisture-density, gradation, compaction, Atterberg limits, permeability (constant and falling head), and triaxial strength tests. Discussion is presented on the effects of agglomeration on the permeability and strength characteristics of the in-place ore. Also discussed is the effect of deposition of the ore using the radial stacker.

With the passing of the 1990 Clean Air Act Amendments, many utilities are opting to switch to lower sulfur coal to meet new SO2 emissions requirements. This lower sulfur coal may be from new suppliers or it may be from current suppliers that modify existing cleaning plants or build new plants to produce this higher quality coal. New, sophisticated coal cleaning simulators are useful tools for optimizing cod cleaning circuit operating parameters to maximize the production of clean coal that meets more stringent specifications for SO2 emissions potential. The examples in this paper were developed using the Coal Cleaning Simulator (CCS), running under ASPEN PLUS™, that was developed under a Department of Energy project cosponsored by the Electric Power Research Institute. With advanced sensitivity analysis and optimization features, CCS allows a quick, efficient, cost-effective review of coal cleaning plant performance to meet current production goals and to plan future changes in plant operating parameters or circuitry configurations.

The prolonged exposure of equipment operators to shock and whole-body vibration (WBV) is linked to cumulative back, neck and abdominal disorders. In low coal mines, space restrictions make it difficult for seat suspensions to isolate operators from shock and WBV. Researchers at NIOSH's Pittsburgh Research Laboratory are responding to these issues by investigating viscoelastic foams. For the full-load case, an ergonomic seat made with viscoelastic foams can isolate the shuttle-car operator from shock at 15 Hz. Researchers used results from additional foam testing using an analytical model to identify viscoelastic foams that provide shock isolation at a frequency below 5 Hz.

INTRODUCTION This paper discusses two uranium tailings waste disposal studies that reflect the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) regulatory actions and their changing requirements during the mid to late 1970's. Present guidelines require that all new uranium tailings impoundments be designed and constructed to eliminate, to the extent that it is reasonably achievable, exposures and risks to the public from the tailings. This includes positive measures for control of seepage losses from the impoundment and for control of radiological releases caused by wind and water erosion. Long-term stability of the reclaimed impoundment is also a very important requirement. That is, it is intended that the tailings impoundment, once it is reclaimed, will require little or no care or maintenance as long as the uranium tailings remain a hazard. Principally because of the long-term stability objective, the NRC has now identified subsurface burial of the tailings as the "prime option" for tailings disposal. The environmental implications of these proposed regulatory actions are obviously desirable. The economic implications the actions may have on a particular project are not always so obvious because they are so dependent on environmental suitability of site conditions. Selection of a site with favorable topographic, geologic and hydrologic conditions will usually result in the most economically and environmentally attractive alternative for tailings disposal. The first project discussed in this paper was initiated before the NRC guidelines had been developed to favour subsurface burial. At the beginning, seepage and radon emission control requirements were moderate. Constraints were imposed on the design by site topography, geology, and project capitalization considerations, factors which were dealt with according to straightforward engineering and design principles. More serious constraints were imposed by changing regulatory requirements. Unlike the more usual engineeringrelated constraints, regulatory requirements were upgraded during the design process, causing the design itself to undergo numerous modifications. The control of respirable coal dust in continuous mining sections involves careful analyses of the generation and transport of the dust, including airflow pattern analyses. Potential dust control devices must be evaluated based on their effect on both local dust transport and potential dust exposure of face personnel. The development of larger and more productive continuous miners increases the need for research on dust control and improvement of visibility in the face area. Two studies relating to underboom dust control are discussed. The first study involved the valuation of potential underboom dust control techniques to reduce operator exposure to dust and determining the relationship between the positioning of exhaust ventilation and the exposure of face personnel as a function of face and operating variables. The study involved full-scale laboratory experiments using a state- of-the-art data acquisition system. The second study related to the use of foam under a continuous miner boom and its effect on silica concentration and respirable dust. The foam study was performed in a coal mine. The laboratory studies involved the fabrication of a full-scale test facility and development of a computer based data acquisition system. This was followed by baseline data collection, smoke trace tests, detailed performance testing of various underboom dust control measures and data analyses. The underground foam test involved the design and installation of the foam generation and delivery system, testing, and data evaluation. The results of the studies are summarized in this paper.

Background The mine is located in Ebensburg, Cambria County, PA. Cambria County is located within the Allegheny Mountain section of the Appalachian Plateau Province. The geologic structures in the mine area included folds, faults, joints and cleats in the coal. These geologic structures seem to have genetic relationships with the Allegheny Front (lannacchione and Puglio, 1979). The mine's geologic structures have been influenced mainly by Ebensburg Anticline and Wilmore Syncline (Watson, 1979). Current longwall panels lay along the western limb of the Wilmore Syncline oriented south 30° west. Surface topographic relief in the area is less than 152 m (500 ft) and overburden thickness varies from 183 to 244 m (600 ft to 800 ft). The coal seam in the mine is part of the Lower Kittanning Formation. The thickness of the B-seam is the subject of discussion. It varies from 1.2 to 1.5 m (48 to 60 in.) and consists of two parts. The lower part is 1.1 to 1.2 m (44 to 48 in.) of soft coal and the remainder is bony coal. The coal seam dips slightly from 0° to 6° to the east-south direction. Panel entries are driven 61 m (200 ft) wide, consisting of three 5.5 m (18 ft) wide entries and two pillars 24.4 x 30.5 m (80 x 100 ft) centers. The mine has a history of cutter roof problems in the entries (Fig. 1) that has delayed the advance rate of entry development considerably and the cost of maintaining those entries is very high due to the requirement of very heavy artificial supports (Fig. 2). Due to excessive convergence in the headgate, installation of additional support and often resetting of steel beam, to provide enough clearance, in these entries imposed additional delay during the retreat of the longwall face, as the shearer cuts coal adjacent to the headgate and shield support at the headgate needs to advance under the steel beams (Fig. 3). INTRODUCTION FMC's Paradise Peak mine, located 13 Ian (8 miles) south of Gabbs, Nevada, became opera¬tional in April of 1986 (Figure 1). It was designed and built by Davy McKee, who was instrumental in equipment design and selection. It is the 7th largest gold deposit in the United States with defined reserves of 10.9 mt (12 million st) containing 34 million gms (1.1 million tr oz) of recoverable gold and 933 million gms (30 million tr oz) of recoverable silver. The mine extracts ore by the open-pit method, taking advantage of a 1.5:1 stripping ratio. The mill operates at a 3600 mt/day (4000 st/d) capacity. Crushing is done in three stages to achieve an ore size of minus 0.635 cm (0.25 inches). Grinding further reduces the ore to 85% minus 100 mesh. The ground ore is treated with cyanide in agitated leach tanks and then washed in the counter-current decantation (OCD) thickeners. Zinc is added to the clarified, deaerated pregnant solution to precipitate the precious metals. The precipitate is acid digested to eliminate excess zinc, filtered and retorted to drive off contained mercury. The retorted precipitate is then fluxed, melted and poured through cascade molds. Dore bars are cleaned for shipment and the slag is sent to an in-house slag treatment system. ELECTROSTATIC SEPARATION The dry electrostatic slag treatment system at Paradise Peak is the first installation of its kind. Electrostatic separation has been widely used in mineral processing since the early 1950's. A brief discussion of the theory behind the process is helpful to those not familiar to electrostatic separation. Charging and sepa¬rating slags, dry minerals or other materials by ion bombardment is the most common form of electrostatic separation. Millions of tonnes of minerals are processed each year by this method. In an ion bombardment separation, granular material is fed onto a grounded metal cylinder (or roll) and charged by a corona-producing electrode placed above the roll's surface (Figure 2). While both conductors and non¬conductors become charged, only the conductor is able to lose its charge. The charged non¬conductor, as it rests on the roll's surface, "sees" an oppositely charged image of itself in the metal surface. It is attracted to the image charge, becomes electrostatically pinned to, and moves with the roll's surface. The conductive particle also sees an image and is attracted to it. But upon touching the roll's surface, it discharges rapidly to the grounded surface and is thrown free from the roll's surface with a projectile motion. In the case of precious metal slags, the con¬ductive particles would be metallic prills of dore metal; and the nonconductive particles would be the slag, free of metal. Middling grains, generally, are in the form of a metallic prill encased in or incompletely liberated from slag. LABORATORY TESTING A number of precious metal slag samples have been tested in the laboratory. It has been found that the composition of slags vary widely from one refinery operation to another. Typical laboratory procedure is to crush and size the slag followed by two-stage lab-scale electro¬static separation. The conductor fractions from the first and second pass are then combined as a prill concentrate; middlings fraction and clean slag tailings from the second pass are held separate. Selected results from laboratory testing are shown in Table 1. It is important to note in Table 1 that the assays represent overall silver and gold, not metallic values. From experience, the laboratory results are typically lower in grade and recovery than the industrial installations. This is largely due to the hydroscopic nature of precious metal slags coupled with the high local humidity in Carpco's Jacksonville, Florida, location. INTRODUCTION As the world's supply of near-surface metalliferous ore bodies is depleted, more emphasis must be placed upon mechanized bulk systems of underground mining. In particular, block caving is becoming increasingly important as a method of mining low to moderate grade deposits at depths of somewhat less than 1219 m (4000 ft). 00 ft). The block caving method requires that the ore body be completely undercut, thereby removing its means of support and inducing failure which progresses from the undercut to the ground surface. As the span of the under- cut increases and the weight of the overlying crushed ore body becomes greater, large stresses are induced on slusher and haulage drifts. Stability of these drifts is critical in block caving operations and often proves to be an extremely difficult task (Kendorski, 1976; McWilliams, 1975). Slusher drift maintenance can be costly, often exceeding that of the original support costs. This chapter analyzes the ground support problems of an Arizona block caving mine. The mine presently uses monolithic concrete liners as a support method. Failure of the liners occurs as the undercut approaches, thus initiating a maintenance problem which will continue until the ore body is depleted in that block or panel. To examine this problem, a simple analysis of the stresses induced by the advancing undercut was per- formed. Utilizing a design method developed by Dixon ( 1973, 1974), the calculated stresses were used to deter- mine the minimum thickness required for varying section shapes of unreinforced concrete liners. It is found that the thicknesses required for stable linings are not economic. Recently developed empirical methods of support de- sign are utilized (Barton, 1974; Bieniawski, 1973) and compared to the analytical method. A final discussion of alternative methods of support is given with recommendations for the use of passive or "yielding" support methods. LAKESHORE MINE (GENERAL GEOLOGY) The Lakeshore copper property is located in Pinal County, AZ, approximately 45 km (28 miles) south of Casa Grande. The Lakeshore deposit is a porphyry cop- per similar to others in Arizona. The ore body consists of disseminated chalcopyrite and fracture fillings in quartz monzonite porphyry (QMP), Cretaceous volcanic (KVS), Precambrian diabase, and Mescal limestone. The ore body has been divided into three distinct zones of mineralization which have been termed (South, 1972) the oxide zone, the sulfide zone, and the tactite zone. The oxide zone occurs in the upper portions of the ore body and consists primarily of leached and oxidized quartz monzonite porphyry and Cretaceous sedimentary and volcanic rocks. The sulfide zone underlies the oxide zone and includes all quartz monzonite porphyry and Cretaceous rocks which have not been oxidized. The thickness of the sulfide zone is variable and ranges from about 61 to 122 m (200 to 400 ft). The tactite zone occurs in a series of Paleozoic metasediments consisting of tactite, quartzite, diabase, hornfels, and dikes of quartz monzonite porphyry. The tactite zone is highly variable in thickness and underlies the Cretaceous volcanic and sediments throughout the mine. Together, the tactite and sulfide zones are known as the thick or tall sulfides. The greatest support stability problems occur in mining of the tactite zone and are therefore the subject of the remainder of this chapter.
